Abstract:Abstract Background and Aims Shading by an overhead canopy (i.e. canopy shading) entails simultaneous changes in both photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and red to far-red ratio (R:FR). As plant responses to PAR (e.g. changes in leaf photosynthesis) are different from responses to R:FR (e.g. changes in plant architecture), and these responses occur at both organ and plant levels, understanding plant photosynthesis responses to canopy shading needs separate analysis of responses to reductions in PAR and R:FR at different levels. Methods In a glasshouse experiment we subjected plants of woody perennial rose (Rosa hybrida) to different light treatments, and so separately quantified the effects of reductions in PAR and R:FR on leaf photosynthetic traits and plant architectural traits. Using a functional–structural plant model, we separately quantified the effects of responses in these traits on plant photosynthesis, and evaluated the relative importance of changes of individual traits for plant photosynthesis under mild and heavy shading caused by virtual overhead canopies. Key Results Model simulations showed that the individual trait responses to canopy shading could have positive and negative effects on plant photosynthesis. Under mild canopy shading, trait responses to reduced R:FR on photosynthesis were generally negative and with a larger magnitude than effects of responses to reduced PAR. Conversely, under heavy canopy shading, the positive effects of trait responses to reduced PAR became dominant. The combined effects of low-R:FR responses and low-PAR responses on plant photosynthesis were not equal to the sum of the separate effects, indicating interactions between individual trait responses. Conclusions Our simulation results indicate that under canopy shading, the relative importance of plant responses to PAR and R:FR for plant photosynthesis changes with shade levels. This suggests that the adaptive significance of plant plasticity responses to one shading factor depends on plant responses to the other.

Antenna Modification in a Fast-Growing Cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus UTEX 2973 Leads to Improved Efficiency and Carbon-Neutral Productivity

Abstract:Our planet is sustained by sunlight, the primary energy source made accessible to all life forms by photoautotrophs. Photoautotrophs are equipped with light-harvesting complexes (LHCs) that enable efficient capture of solar energy, particularly when light is limiting. However, under high light, LHCs can harvest photons in excess of the utilization capacity of cells, causing photodamage. This damaging effect is most evident when there is a disparity between the amount of light harvested and carbon available. Cells strive to circumvent this problem by dynamically adjusting the antenna structure in response to the changing light signals, a process known to be energetically expensive. Much emphasis has been laid on elucidating the relationship between antenna size and photosynthetic efficiency and identifying strategies to synthetically modify antennae for optimal light capture. Our study is an effort in this direction and investigates the possibility of modifying phycobilisomes, the LHCs present in cyanobacteria, the simplest of photoautotrophs. We systematically truncate the phycobilisomes of Synechococcus elongatus UTEX 2973, a widely studied, fast-growing model cyanobacterium and demonstrate that partial truncation of its antenna can lead to a growth advantage of up to 36% compared to the wild type and an increase in sucrose titer of up to 22%. In contrast, targeted deletion of the linker protein which connects the first phycocyanin rod to the core proved detrimental, indicating that the core alone is not enough, and it is essential to maintain a minimal rod-core structure for efficient light harvest and strain fitness. IMPORTANCE Light energy is essential for the existence of life on this planet, and only photosynthetic organisms, equipped with light-harvesting antenna protein complexes, can capture this energy, making it readily accessible to all other life forms. However, these light-harvesting antennae are not designed to function optimally under extreme high light, a condition which can cause photodamage and significantly reduce photosynthetic productivity. In this study, we attempt to assess the optimal antenna structure for a fast-growing, high-light tolerant photosynthetic microbe with the goal of improving its productivity. Our findings provide concrete evidence that although the antenna complex is essential, antenna modification is a viable strategy to maximize strain performance under controlled growth conditions. This understanding can also be translated into identifying avenues to improve light harvesting efficiency in higher photoautotrophs.

Abstract:Photosynthetic and growth characteristics of Mosla chinensis and M. scabra were compared at three irradiances similar to shaded forest understory, forest edge, and open land. At 25 % full ambient irradiance, M. chinensis and M. scabra had similar photosynthetic characteristics, but saturation irradiance, compensation irradiance, and apparent quantum yield of M. chinensis were higher than those of M. scabra at full ambient irradiance and 70 % full ambient irradiance. At the same irradiance treatment, specific leaf area and leaf area ratio of M. chinensis were lower than those of M. scabra . Photon-saturated photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency of M. chinensis , however, were not significantly higher than those of M. scabra , and the leaf area and total biomass were lower than those of M. scabra . As a sun-acclimated plant, the not enough high photosynthetic capacity and lower biomass accumulation may cause that M. chinensis has weak capability to extend its population and hence be concomitant in the community.

Abstract:Increased plant density markedly affects canopy morphophysiological activities and crop productivity. This study aims to model maize canopy final morphology under increased interplant competition by revising a functional–structural plant model, i.e., ADEL-Maize. A 2-year field experiment was conducted at Mengcheng, Anhui Province, China, in 2016 and 2018. A randomized complete block design of five plant densities (PDs), i.e., 4.5, 6, 7.5, 9, and 15 plants m –2 , with three replications was applied using a hybrid, i.e., Zhengdan 958. Canopy morphology at different PDs was measured with destructive samplings when maize canopy was fully expanded. The relationship of changes of organ morphology in relation to increased plant density was analyzed based on 2016 data. The ADEL-Maize was first calibrated for the hybrid at 4.5 plants m –2 and then revised by introducing relationships identified from 2016 data, followed by independent validation with 2018 field data. A heatmap visualization was shown to clearly illustrate the effects of increased plant density on final morphology of laminae, sheaths, and internodes. The logarithmic + linear equations were found to fit changes for the organ size versus increased plant density for phytomers excluding ear position or linear equations for the phytomer at ear position based on 2016 field data. The revision was then further tested independently by having achieved satisfactory agreements between the simulations and observations in canopy size under different PDs with 2018 field data. In conclusion, this study has characterized the relationship between canopy morphology and increased interplant competition for use in the ADEL-Maize and realized the simulations of final size of laminae, sheaths, and internodes, as affected by increased plant density, laying a foundation to test an ideotype for maize withstanding high interplant competition.

Abstract:Abstract The photosynthetic rate is considered to be affected by individual biomass and limited by nutrients. Metabolic scaling models are often utilized to predict photosynthetic rates based on plant size and other factors, such as temperature and plant nutrient composition. However, the intrinsic regulatory mechanisms of the combined factors that affect the photosynthetic rates of living organisms are subject to debate. Here, we present a model developed from the metabolic scaling model, the Michaelis‐Menten equation and elemental stoichiometric models to precisely predict the relationship between plant photosynthetic rate and biomass. The developed model was verified against data for small woody and nonwoody plants, and in comparison with the typical metabolic scaling model, this model was shown to be more capable of explaining the photosynthesis‐biomass relationship. Moreover, the results showed that the combined factors affected photosynthesis via the regulatory effect of nutrients on photosynthesis‐biomass allometry. We highlight that nutrients have direct effects on the allocation of plant biomass and photosynthetic investment under stable and balanced growth states.
Maximizing the Radiation Use Efficiency by Matching the Leaf Area and Leaf Nitrogen Vertical Distributions in a Maize Canopy: A Simulation Study

Abstract:The radiation use efficiency (RUE) is one of the most important functional traits determining crop productivity. The coordination of the vertical distribution of light and leaf nitrogen has been proven to be effective in boosting the RUE from both experimental and computational evidence. However, previous simulation studies have primarily assumed that the leaf area is uniformly distributed along the canopy depth, rarely considering the optimization of the leaf area distribution, especially for C4 crops. The present study hypothesizes that the RUE may be maximized by matching the leaf area and leaf nitrogen vertical distributions in the canopy. To test this hypothesis, various virtual maize canopies were generated by combining the leaf inclination angle, vertical leaf area distribution, and vertical leaf nitrogen distribution and were further evaluated by an improved multilayer canopy photosynthesis model. We found that a greater fraction of leaf nitrogen is preferentially allocated to canopy layers with greater leaf areas to maximize the RUE. The coordination of light and nitrogen emerged as a property from the simulations to maximize the RUE in most scenarios, particularly in dense canopies. This study not only facilitates explicit and precise profiling of ideotypes for maximizing the RUE but also represents a primary step toward high-throughput phenotyping and screening of the RUE for massive numbers of inbred lines and cultivars.
Quantifying impacts of enhancing photosynthesis on crop yield

Abstract:Enhancing photosynthesis is widely accepted as critical to advancing crop yield. However, yield consequences of photosynthetic manipulation are confounded by feedback effects arising from interactions with crop growth, development dynamics and the prevailing environment. Here, we developed a cross-scale modelling capability that connects leaf photosynthesis to crop yield in a manner that addresses the confounding factors. The model was validated using data on crop biomass and yield for wheat and sorghum from diverse field experiments. Consequences for yield were simulated for major photosynthetic enhancement targets related to leaf CO2 and light energy capture efficiencies, and for combinations of these targets. Predicted impacts showed marked variation and were dependent on the photosynthetic enhancement, crop type and environment, especially the degree of water limitation. The importance of interdependencies operating across scales of biological organization was highlighted, as was the need to increase understanding and modelling of the photosynthesis–stomatal conductance link to better quantify impacts of enhancing photosynthesis.

Variation in leaf photosynthetic capacity within plant canopies: optimization, structural, and physiological constraints and inefficiencies

Abstract:Leaf photosynthetic capacity (light-saturated net assimilation rate, A A ) increases from bottom to top of plant canopies as the most prominent acclimation response to the conspicuous within-canopy gradients in light availability. Light-dependent variation in A A through plant canopies is associated with changes in key leaf structural (leaf dry mass per unit leaf area), chemical (nitrogen (N) content per area and dry mass, N partitioning between components of photosynthetic machinery), and physiological (stomatal and mesophyll conductance) traits, whereas the contribution of different traits to within-canopy A A gradients varies across sites, species, and plant functional types. Optimality models maximizing canopy carbon gain for a given total canopy N content predict that A A should be proportionally related to canopy light availability. However, comparison of model expectations with experimental data of within-canopy photosynthetic trait variations in representative plant functional types indicates that such proportionality is not observed in real canopies, and A A vs. canopy light relationships are curvilinear. The factors responsible for deviations from full optimality include stronger stomatal and mesophyll diffusion limitations at higher light, reflecting greater water limitations and more robust foliage in higher light. In addition, limits on efficient packing of photosynthetic machinery within leaf structural scaffolding, high costs of N redistribution among leaves, and limited plasticity of N partitioning among components of photosynthesis machinery constrain A A plasticity. Overall, this review highlights that the variation of A A through plant canopies reflects a complex interplay between adjustments of leaf structure and function to multiple environmental drivers, and that A A plasticity is limited by inherent constraints on and trade-offs between structural, chemical, and physiological traits. I conclude that models trying to simulate photosynthesis gradients in plant canopies should consider co-variations among environmental drivers, and the limitation of functional trait variation by physical constraints and include the key trade-offs between structural, chemical, and physiological leaf characteristics.

Abstract:The maximum rate of carboxylation (V-cmax) is an essential leaf trait determining the photosynthetic capacity of plants. Existing approaches for estimatingV(cmax)at large scale mainly rely on empirical relationships with proxies such as leaf nitrogen/chlorophyll content or hyperspectral reflectance, or on complicated inverse models from gross primary production or solar-induced fluorescence. A novel mechanistic approach based on the assumption that plants optimize resource investment coordinating with environment and growth has been shown to accurately predict C3 plantV(cmax)based on mean growing season environmental conditions. However, the ability of optimality theory to explain seasonal variation inV(cmax)has not been fully investigated. Here, we adapt an optimality-based model to simulate dailyV(cmax,25C)(V(cmax)at a standardized temperature of 25 degrees C) by incorporating the effects of antecedent environment, which affects current plant functioning, and dynamic light absorption, which coordinates with plant functioning. We then use seasonalV(cmax,25C)field measurements from 10 sites across diverse ecosystems to evaluate model performance. Overall, the model explains about 83% of the seasonal variation in C3 plantV(cmax,25C)across the 10 sites, with a medium root mean square error of 12.3 mu mol m(-2) s(-1), which suggests that seasonal changes inV(cmax,25C)are consistent with optimal plant function. We show that failing to account for acclimation to antecedent environment or coordination with dynamic light absorption dramatically decreases estimation accuracy. Our results show that optimality-based approach can accurately reproduce seasonal variation in canopy photosynthetic potential, and suggest that incorporating such theory into next-generation trait-based terrestrial biosphere models would improve predictions of global photosynthesis.
Upscaling from Leaf to Canopy: Improved Spectral Indices for Leaf Biochemical Traits Estimation by Minimizing the Difference Between Leaf Adaxial and Abaxial Surfaces

Abstract:The knowledge of leaf biochemical traits is significant to understand the plant growth and physiological status. Spectral indices have been widely used to assess leaf biochemical traits, while the estimation accuracies at canopy level are frequently lower compared to those at leaf level in part due to the complexity of canopy structures and the variations in optical properties between leaf adaxial and abaxial surfaces. This study thus improved spectral indices with minimizing the effect of the difference between leaf adaxial and abaxial surfaces to assess leaf biochemical traits from leaf to canopy level. The datasets including leaf reflectance and canopy reflectance with corresponding leaf chlorophyll content (C-ab), water content (C-w), and dry matter content (C-m) from a wide range of plant species were used. Results showed that there existed a significant difference between leaf abaxial and abaxial reflectance, causing the variation in the relationship between leaf biochemical traits and spectral indices. The published spectral indices exhibited the strong relationships with C-ab, C-w, and C-m for either leaf adaxial or abaxial data, while the relationships of spectral indices with C-ab, C-w, and C-m from leaf adaxial reflectance were inconsistent with those from leaf abaxial reflectance. The proposed adjusted ratio of difference spectral index (ARDSI) minimized the difference between leaf adaxial and abaxial reflectance for assessing C-ab, C-w, and C-m at leaf level with the root mean square error of 9.32 mu g cm(-2), 0.0050 g cm(-2), and 0.0053 g cm(-2), respectively. The application of the proposed ARDSI to the canopy level alleviated the effect of the variations of leaf adaxial and abaxial reflectance difference and canopy structures on the estimation of leaf biochemical traits, which thus improved the assessment of C-ab, C-w, and C-m at canopy level in the simulated and measured datasets. The proposed approach would advance the applicability of spectral indices to monitor the physiological and functional traits of field crops at different scales.
Connecting detailed photosynthetic kinetics to crop growth and yield: A coupled modeling framework

Abstract:Photosynthesis and crop growth are inseparable processes that govern plant carbon assimilation and allocation. An accurate model description of these processes can bridge dynamics at the leaf and canopy levels, assisting in identifying potential photosynthetic improvements that can be converted into increased yield. Integrating multiscale biophysical processes and achieving computational effectiveness for seasonal simulations, however, are challenging. Here we present a fully coupled modeling framework that integrates a metabolic model of C3 photosynthesis (ePhotosynthesis) and a semi-mechanistic crop growth model (BioCro). We replaced the leaf-level Farquhar photosynthesis model in BioCro with the ePhotosynthesis model that mechanistically describes the photosystem electron transport processes and the C3 carbon metabolism including the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle and the photorespiratory pathway. The coupled BioCro-ePhotosynthesis model was calibrated to represent a soybean cultivar and developed to be operationally fast for seasonal simulations. As an example of model application, we conducted a global sensitivity analysis of 26 enzymes under an average daytime intercepted radiation of 400 µmol m-2 s-1, identifying two enzymes, phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK) and phosphoribulokinase (PRK) that had the largest impact on the leaf-level assimilation. Increasing PGK and PRK by two-fold was predicted to increase the leaf-level assimilation by 8.3% and the final seed yield by 6.75% ± 0.5% over four years of observed field climate data. The coupled BioCro-ePhotosynthesis model provides a seamless and efficient integration between the leaf-level metabolism and the field-level yield over a full growing season. The coupled model could be further applied to investigate non-steady-state photosynthetic processes such as non-photochemical quenching.

Photosynthetic temperature responses in leaves and canopies: why temperature optima may disagree at different scales

Abstract:Understanding how canopy-scale photosynthesis responds to temperature is of paramount importance for realistic prediction of the likely impact of climate change on forest growth. The effects of temperature on leaf-scale photosynthesis have been extensively documented but data demonstrating the temperature response of canopy-scale photosynthesis are relatively rare, and the mechanisms that determine the response are not well quantified. Here, we compared leaf- and canopy-scale photosynthesis responses to temperature measured in a whole-tree chamber experiment and tested mechanisms that could explain the difference between leaf and crown scale temperature optima for photosynthesis. We hypothesized that (i) there is a large contribution of non-light saturated leaves to total crown photosynthesis, (ii) photosynthetic component processes vary vertically through the canopy following the gradient in incident light and (iii) seasonal temperature acclimation of photosynthetic biochemistry has a significant role in determining the overall temperature response of canopy photosynthesis. We tested these hypotheses using three models of canopy radiation interception and photosynthesis parameterized with leaf-level physiological data and estimates of canopy leaf area. Our results identified the influence of non-light saturated leaves as a key determinant of the lower temperature optimum of canopy photosynthesis, which reduced the temperature optimum of canopy photosynthesis by 6-8 °C compared with the leaf scale. Further, we demonstrate the importance of accounting for within-canopy variation and seasonal temperature acclimation of photosynthetic biochemistry in determining the magnitude of canopy photosynthesis. Overall, our study identifies key processes that need to be incorporated in terrestrial biosphere models to accurately predict temperature responses of whole-tree photosynthesis.
Determinants of photochemical characteristics of the photosynthetic electron transport chain of maize

Abstract:Introduction: The photosynthetic electron transport chain (ETC) is the bridge that links energy harvesting during the photophysical reactions at one end and energy consumption during the biochemical reactions at the other. Its functioning is thus fundamental for the proper balance between energy supply and demand in photosynthesis. Currently, there is a lack of understanding regarding how the structural properties of the ETC are affected by nutrient availability and plant developmental stages, which is a major roadblock to comprehensive modeling of photosynthesis. Methods: Redox parameters reflect the structural controls of ETC on the photochemical reactions and electron transport. We conducted joint measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) and gas exchange under systematically varying environmental conditions and growth stages of maize and sampled foliar nutrient contents. We utilized the recently developed steady-state photochemical model to infer redox parameters of electron transport from these measurements. Results and discussion: We found that the inferred values of these photochemical redox parameters varied with leaf macronutrient content. These variations may be caused either directly by these nutrients being components of protein complexes on the ETC or indirectly by their impacts on the structural integrity of the thylakoid and feedback from the biochemical reactions. Also, the redox parameters varied with plant morphology and developmental stage, reflecting seasonal changes in the structural properties of the ETC. Our findings will facilitate the parameterization and simulation of complete models of photosynthesis.
Effect of Maize Canopy Structure on Light Interception and Radiation Use Efficiency at Different Canopy Layers

Abstract:Reasonable dense planting is an important measure to increase crop yield per unit area and save resources. However, there is no unified view of the competition for photosynthetic radiation in different stratification structures of maize plants due to different planting densities, as well as the internal mechanism of yield increase. In order to investigate these issues, field experiments were conducted from 2021 to 2022 in Daxing, Beijing, China (39°37′ N, 116°25′ E, altitude 31.3 m a.s.l.). Field plots were arranged in a randomized block design, with the main plot factor representing plant density. In each replicate, four densities were set, i.e., 33,000 (D1), 42,000 (D2), 55,000 (D3), and 83,000 (D4) plants·ha−1. Canopy stratification structure characteristics, including leaf area index, biomass, and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), were measured in each stratification structure, and transmitted PAR, radiation use efficiency (RUE), and light extinction coefficient (K) were calculated. We found that increasing plant density significantly increased biomass, leaf area index (LAI), and precipitation use efficiency (PUE), but the light extinction coefficient (K) and harvest index (HI) showed opposite trends. Compared to the D1 treatment, the grain yield, precipitation use efficiency (PUE), radiation use efficiency (RUE), and LAI increased by 22.6–88.2%, 9.2–50.5%, 26.7–116.9%, and 27.7 to 150.6% in the D2, D3, and D4 treatments, and K and HI decreased by 19.7–50.3% and 4.2–11.5%, respectively. These showed that a density of 83,000 plants·ha−1 was effective in promoting maize growth in the Daxing area of Beijing, China.

Abstract:Leaf-scale photosynthetic optimization models can quantitatively predict photosynthetic acclimation and have become an important means of improving vegetation and land surface models. Previous models have generally been based on the optimality assumption of maximizing the net photosynthetic assimilation per unit leaf area (i.e. the area-based optimality) while overlooking other optimality assumptions such as maximizing the net photosynthetic assimilation per unit leaf dry mass (i.e. the mass-based optimality). This paper compares the predicted results of photosynthetic acclimation to different environmental conditions between the area-based optimality and the mass-based optimality models. The predictions are then verified using the observational data from the literatures. The mass-based optimality model better predicted photosynthetic acclimation to growth light intensity, air temperature and CO2 concentration, and captured more variability in photosynthetic traits than the area-based optimality models. The findings suggest that the mass-based optimality approach may be a promising strategy for improving the predictive power and accuracy of optimization models, which have been widely used in various studies related to plant carbon issues.
Quantifying Water-Use Efficiency in Plant Canopies with Varying Leaf Angle and Density Distribution

Abstract:Abstract Background and Aims Variation in architectural traits related to the spatial and angular distribution of leaf area can have considerable impacts on canopy-scale fluxes contributing to water-use efficiency (WUE). These architectural traits are frequent targets for crop improvement, and for improving understanding and predictions of net ecosystem carbon and water fluxes. Methods A three-dimensional, leaf-resolving model along with a range of virtually-generated hypothetical canopies were used to quantify interactions between canopy structure and WUE by examining its response to variation of leaf inclination independent of leaf azimuth, canopy heterogeneity, vegetation density, and physiological parameters. Key Results Overall, increasing leaf area index (LAI), increasing the daily-averaged fraction of leaf area projected in the sun direction (Gavg) via the leaf inclination or azimuth distribution, and increasing homogeneity had a similar effect on canopy-scale daily fluxes contributing to WUE. Increasing any of these parameters tended to increase daily light interception, increase daily net photosynthesis at low LAI and decrease at high LAI, increase daily transpiration, and decrease WUE. Isolated spherical crowns could decrease photosynthesis by about 60% but increase daily WUE up to 130% relative to a homogenous canopy with equivalent leaf area density. There was no observed optimum in daily canopy WUE as LAI, leaf angle distribution, or heterogeneity were varied. However, when the canopy was dense, a more vertical leaf angle distribution could simultaneously increase both photosynthesis and WUE. Conclusions Variation in leaf angle and density distributions can have a substantial impact on canopy-level carbon and water fluxes, with potential trade-offs between the two. These traits therefore may be viable target traits for increasing or maintaining crop productivity while using less water, and for improvement of simplified models. Increasing canopy density or decreasing canopy heterogeneity increases the impact of leaf angle on WUE and its dependent processes.

Abstract:Modeling vegetation photosynthesis is essential for understanding carbon exchanges between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. The radiative transfer process within plant canopies is one of the key drivers that regulate canopy photosynthesis. Most vegetation cover consists of discrete plant crowns, of which the physical observation departs from the underlying assumption of a homogenous and uniform medium in classic radiative transfer theory. Here we advance the Geometric Optical Radiative Transfer (GORT) model to simulate photosynthesis activities for discontinuous plant canopies. We separate radiation absorption into two components that are absorbed by sunlit and shaded leaves, and derive analytical solutions by integrating over the canopy layer. To model leaf-level and canopy-level photosynthesis, leaf light absorption is then linked to the biochemical process of gas diffusion through leaf stomata. The canopy gap probability derived from GORT differs from classic radiative transfer theory, especially when the leaf area index is high, due to leaf clumping effects. Tree characteristics such as tree density, crown shape, and canopy length affect leaf clumping and regulate radiation interception. Modeled gross primary production (GPP) for two deciduous forest stands could explain more than 80% of the variance of flux tower measurements at both near hourly and daily timescales. We demonstrate that ambient CO2 concentrations influence daytime vegetation photosynthesis, which needs to be considered in biogeochemical models. The proposed model is complementary to classic radiative transfer theory and shows promise in modeling the radiative transfer process and photosynthetic activities over discontinuous forest canopies.

Abstract:Life on Earth depends on the conversion of solar energy to chemical energy by plants through photosynthesis. A fundamental challenge in optimizing photosynthesis is to adjust leaf angles to efficiently use the intercepted sunlight under the constraints of heat stress, water loss and competition. Despite the importance of leaf angle, until recently, we have lacked data and frameworks to describe and predict leaf angle dynamics and their impacts on leaves to the globe. We review the role of leaf angle in studies of ecophysiology, ecosystem ecology and earth system science, and highlight the essential yet understudied role of leaf angle as an ecological strategy to regulate plant carbon-water-energy nexus and to bridge leaf, canopy and earth system processes. Using two models, we show that leaf angle variations have significant impacts on not only canopy-scale photosynthesis, energy balance and water use efficiency but also light competition within the forest canopy. New techniques to measure leaf angles are emerging, opening opportunities to understand the rarely-measured intraspecific, interspecific, seasonal and interannual variations of leaf angles and their implications to plant biology and earth system science. We conclude by proposing three directions for future research.

Abstract:To keep up with the growth of human population and to circumvent deleterious effects of global climate change, it is essential to enhance crop yield to achieve higher production. Here we review mathematical models of oxygenic photosynthesis that are extensively used, and discuss in depth a subset that accounts for diverse approaches providing solutions to our objective. These include models (1) to study different ways to enhance photosynthesis, such as fine-tuning antenna size, photoprotection and electron transport; (2) to bioengineer carbon metabolism; and (3) to evaluate the interactions between the process of photosynthesis and the seasonal crop dynamics, or those that have included statistical whole-genome prediction methods to quantify the impact of photosynthesis traits on the improvement of crop yield. We conclude by emphasizing that the results obtained in these studies clearly demonstrate that mathematical modelling is a key tool to examine different approaches to improve photosynthesis for better productivity, while effective multiscale crop models, especially those that also include remote sensing data, are indispensable to verify different strategies to obtain maximized crop yields.

Abstract:Leaf structure plays an important role in photosynthesis. However, the causal relationship and the quantitative importance of any single structural parameter to the overall photosynthetic performance of a leaf remains open to debate. In this paper, we report on a mechanistic model, eLeaf, which successfully captures rice leaf photosynthetic performance under varying environmental conditions of light and CO2 . We developed a 3D reaction-diffusion model for leaf photosynthesis parameterised using a range of imaging data and biochemical measurements from plants grown under ambient and elevated CO2 and then interrogated the model to quantify the importance of these elements. The model successfully captured leaf-level photosynthetic performance in rice. Photosynthetic metabolism underpinned the majority of the increased carbon assimilation rate observed under elevated CO2 levels, with a range of structural elements making positive and negative contributions. Mesophyll porosity could be varied without any major outcome on photosynthetic performance, providing a theoretical underpinning for experimental data. eLeaf allows quantitative analysis of the influence of morphological and biochemical properties on leaf photosynthesis. The analysis highlights a degree of leaf structural plasticity with respect to photosynthesis of significance in the context of attempts to improve crop photosynthesis.
