Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to explore the most effective nonsurgical therapy to treat stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Methods: Data were pooled and the Bayesian random effects model was utilized to evaluate the inconsistencies between indirect and direct proof. Network sub-analyses, sensitivity and subgroup analysis, and standard pairwise comparisons were utilized in preparation of the main analysis. Results: A total of 17 RCTs (852 participants) were enrolled. With regard to therapy, pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) was more often recommended than biofeedback (BF). The combination of PFMT and BF was remarkably promoted than PFMT alone or PFMT with vaginal cone (VC) or electrical stimulation (ES). The QL scores of patients who underwent PFMT were noticeably improved compared with those of patients who underwent ES. The combination of BF and PFMT was remarkably promoted compared with BF alone. VC was superior to ES with regard to QL scores. By contrast, ES alone was the least preferred method to decrease urine leakage and to promote QL. Conclusion: The combination of BF and PFMT was proven to be an optimal method to treat SUI which aims to promote urine leakage and LQ compared with either PFMT alone, ES, VC, or circular muscle (CME), while ES was the least preferred method to promote LQ.

Abstract:We developed a colitis model in Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) to investigate the relationship between colitis and neutrophil elastase (NE). Colitis was induced by a single intracolonic dose of trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS; 90 mg/ml) dissolved in 15% (vol/vol) ethanol. The ulcer area, tissue myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, and luminal NE activity all were increased on Days 1 and 5, corresponding with the acute inflammatory histopathological changes. These acute inflammatory parameters subsequently decreased by Day 14, and chronic inflammatory histopathological changes became evident. Recurrence of inflammation was not observed during the period up to Day 28. To evaluate our colitis model, the effects of prednisolone were examined. Prednisolone was administered orally once on the day before induction of colitis, and animals were treated twice daily thereafter. Although prednisolone had little effect on the tissue MPO activity, prednisolone inhibited the ulcer area and NE activity. In addition, the effects of an NE-specific inhibitor (ONO-6818) on our TNBS-induced colitis model were examined. In the subcutaneous treatment study, ONO-6818 was administered once before the induction of colitis. Although ONO-6818 had little effect on the tissue MPO activity, the ulcer area and NE activity were decreased in the ONO-6818-treated group. The inhibitory effects on the ulcer area and NE activity were confirmed after oral treatment with ONO-6818 after induction of colitis. We conclude that our colitis model is useful for investigating the relationship between colitis and NE, and inhibition of NE activity can prevent the progression of ulceration.
Efficacy and Safety of High-Dose Vitamin D Supplementation vs Solifenacin or Standard Urotherapy for Overactive Bladder Dry in Children: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Abstract:Purpose: We investigated the efficacy and safety of high-dose vitamin D supplementation (VDS) plus standard urotherapy (SU) in managing overactive bladder dry in children. Materials and methods: A 3-arm, randomized clinical trial was performed at an academic center in China between January 2023 and June 2023. Eligible patients (n=303) were randomized to receive 8 weeks of high-dose VDS (vitamin D3 drops encapsulated as soft capsules, 2400 IU/d) plus SU (VDS + SU group; n=100), solifenacin (5-10 mg/d) plus SU (SOL + SU group; n=102), or SU alone (SU group; n=101). Reduction in voiding frequency was the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes encompassed improvement in urgency, nocturia, quality of life score, pediatric lower urinary tract symptom score, and participant satisfaction. Treatment-emergent adverse events were recorded within each group. Results: Participants had a median age of 82.0 months and their baseline mean vitamin D level was 22.64 ng/mL. The VDS + SU group showed greater improvements in voids/d than the SOL + SU group (median difference 3.0; 95% CI, 2.0 to 3.5; P < .001) and the SU group (median difference 4.0; 95% CI, 3.0 to 5.0; P < .001) after intervention. The VDS + SU group also showed the greatest improvement in quality of life and pediatric lower urinary tract symptom scores. Patient satisfaction was similar between the SOL + SU and SU groups. The VDS + SU group did not exhibit a heightened risk of treatment-emergent adverse events compared to the other groups. Conclusions: High-dose VDS plus SU was effective and well-tolerated in managing overactive bladder dry in children, suggesting its potential as a novel therapeutic option for this population.

Abstract:Purpose: To compare the quality of life (QoL) in the same patients first treated with botulinum toxin A (BTA) injections for neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) and then with bladder augmentation (BA). Method: Retrospective study of patients who had BA after BTA treatment between January 2012 and December 2022. Qualiveen Short Form questionnaires and a 7-level Likert/PGI-I scale to answer the question "How would you describe your quality of life after surgery compared to when you felt your best with BTA injections?" were collated and analyzed. Results: Fifty-two BAs for neurogenic bladder (NDO or low compliance) were performed in patients with a median age of 43years [33; 52] previously treated with BTA. After a median follow-up of 33.5 [13.8; 54.3] months, the median Qualiveen-SF global score after BA was significantly higher than that obtained at best BTA efficacy (1.63 [1; 2.63] vs. 2.63 [1.88; 3], P=0.012), as were the scores for the fear, constraints/restrictions and limitations/inconvenience domains. The median PGI-I score was +3 [2; 3] (truly better QoL) and 85.4% of patients reported a QoL after BA superior to the best QoL under BTA. Conclusion: BA provides a greater range of QoL improvement than BTA injection for patients who have experienced both treatments. Long-lasting effects and absence of need to perform iterative retreatment were the main reasons.
Incontinence training in children with cerebral palsy: A prospective controlled trial

Abstract:Introduction: Urinary incontinence is the most frequently observed lower urinary tract symptom in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Being continent can positively influence quality of life of the child and the social environment. Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of incontinence training with urotherapy in children with CP. Study design: A population-based case-control study was conducted including 21 children with CP and 24 typically developing children between 5 and 12 years old, both with daytime incontinence or combined daytime incontinence and enuresis. Children received treatment for one year with three-monthly examination by means of uroflowmetry, a structured questionnaire and bladder diaries. Children started with three months of standard urotherapy. After three, six and nine months of training, specific urotherapy interventions (pelvic floor muscle training with biofeedback, alarm treatment or neuromodulation) and/or pharmacotherapy could be added to the initial treatment. Therapy was individualized to probable underlying conditions. Effectiveness was controlled for spontaneous improvement due to maturation and analysed by means of longitudinal linear models, generalized estimating equations and multilevel cumulative odds models. Comparison with typically developing children was assessed by means of Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Results: Results suggest effectivity rate of incontinence training is lower and changes occur more slowly in time in children with CP compared to typically developing children (Figure). Within the group of children with CP, significant changes during one year of training were found for daytime incontinence (p < 0.001), frequency of daytime incontinence (p = 0.002), frequency of enuresis (p = 0.048), storage symptoms (p = 0.011), correct toilet posture (p = 0.034) and fecal incontinence (p = 0.026). Discussion: Maximum voided volume and fluid intake at the start of training were significantly lower in children with CP and could explain a delayed effectiveness of urotherapy. Treatment of constipation demonstrated a positive effect on maximum voided volume and should be initiated together with standard urotherapy when constipation is still present after implementation of a correct fluid intake schedule. Future research with a larger sample size is recommended. Conclusions: Incontinence training with urotherapy can be an effective treatment for urinary incontinence in children with cerebral palsy. In the current cohort, effectivity rate of incontinence training was lower and changes occurred more slowly in children with cerebral palsy compared to typically developing children.
Voiding camp: a successful and unique bladder rehabilitation program for children with urinary incontinence.

Abstract:Extended summary Introduction & background Standard urotherapy is a well-established treatment for children with incontinence, although it is often challenging for both child and parents, and not always successful. As an alternative, several in- and outpatient bladder training programs have shown positive results on achieving continence. However, the disadvantage is the hospital environment, which can be more stressful for the child, and also quite expensive for society. Objective The aim was to evaluate the outcome on achieving continence following a voiding camp, where standard urotherapy was applied during a one-week stay at a regular summer youth camp, outside the hospital. Study design Retrospective analysis of 105 children with urinary incontinence, followed in an expert centre for urinary incontinence for at least one year. Data at 7 different time points, before, during and until 6 months after voiding camp were collected. Results Even though all children had regular follow-up in an expert centre for urinary incontinence for at least one year before participating voiding camp, only 15% of the children reached the recommended amount of daily fluid intake (1.5 L/day). Once minimal daily fluid intake was re-established during the voiding camp, an immediate increase in the maximum voided volume (MVV), and a decrease in the number of wet days and wet nights per week was noted. This effect on a higher MVV remained even 3 months after voiding camp. Discussion Although sufficient daily fluid intake is a well-established part of standard urotherapy, up until now there was no data that proved the positive impact of sufficient daily fluid intake on bladder volume training and achieving continence in children. Conclusion Voiding camp, as an unique bladder rehabilitation program for children with incontinence, is a successful alternative treatment option. Optimizing the daily fluid intake during voiding camp had a major positive impact on bladder volume training and achieving continence in children.

Abstract:Summary Introduction Posterior urethral valves (PUV) is a chronic condition that can adversely impact child and family health related quality of life (HRQOL). Surprisingly, to date, the impact of this condition on the QOL of children with PUV has not been studied. Thus, our aim is to evaluate this important aspect of care using validated questionnaires in our institutional PUV clinic. Methods From December 2022 to January 2024, the PedsQL Inventory and associated family impact module was distributed in our PUV clinic. Higher scores reflect better HRQoL and less impact on family. Children >8 years old completed the tool themselves, otherwise parents completed the tools on behalf of the child. We compared PUV scores against reported psychometric data from healthy children and other chronic illnesses. Results A total of 112 families completed the questionnaires. The total HRQoL score was 80 +/- 13. Overall, we noted that the domains reflecting psychosocial impact were significantly lower than those of physical well-being (76 +/- 16 vs. 89 +/- 15 for psychosocial and physical impact, respectively; p<0.01). There was a significant difference in the psychosocial emotional impact for children managed with clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) compared to those who were not (69 +/- 21 vs. 81 +/- 16; p=0.005) ( Table 2 ). In addition, we noted that children with PUV scored similar to healthy controls, but higher than children with other chronic illnesses. With respect to the impact on family, overall, parent, and family impacts were 76 +/- 19, 78 +/- 21, and 81 +/- 21, respectively. Discussion Chronic illness has been associated with a negative impact on HRQoL in both adults and children. We noted similar findings the present study, particularly for young children and those who are maintained on CIC. To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate the impact of PUV on a child's HRQoL as well as the impact on the family, and to document a negative psychosocial impact of CIC in this population. However, there are some important limitations to be addressed including relying on families to complete questionnaires accurately during busy clinic visits and the lack of controls from the same environment. Conclusion When compared to healthy controls, PUV patients score similarly in HRQoL assessment. In addition, children <3years of age report a negative impact on physical well being, and CIC negatively impacts the emotional well-being. These data can be used to advocate for better mental health supports and social work for these children.

Abstract:Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of biofeedback (BF) on the rehabilitation of children with nonneurological dysfunctional voiding (NDV). Methods: RCTs were retrieved from various databases (published from inception to February 29, 2024). The effects of the BF and non-BF treatments were compared. A random-effects model was used to evaluate the combined data. Results: Meta-analysis revealed that BF increased the maximum urinary flow rate (SMD = 3.78, 95% CI 1.33∼6.22), improved urination time (SMD = 5.88, 95% CI 3.75∼8.01), and reduced the postvoid residual (SMD = -19.18, 95% CI -27.03∼-11.33) and urinary tract infection incidence (RR = 0.43, 95% CI 0.21∼0.87). Electromyogram activity (RR = 0.46, 95% CI 0.25∼0.84) and abnormal urination patterns (RR = 0.51, 95% CI 0.35∼0.74) improved, with effects persisting for more than 1 year. However, the effect of BF on the mean urinary flow rate in children with NDV was significant only after 1 year of follow-up (SMD = 1.90, 95% CI 0.87∼2.92). Conclusion: Existing evidence indicates that BF can enhance urinary parameters and patterns in children with NDV. However, its effectiveness in addressing constipation, daytime urinary incontinence, and nocturnal urinary incontinence is not substantial. High-quality randomized controlled trials can offer additional insights.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Refractory bladder and bowel dysfunction (BBD) significantly affects the health and quality of life of children and their caregivers, emphasizing the need for effective and minimally invasive treatments. This study aims to present the inaugural Canadian experience using sacral neuromodulation (SNM) as a therapeutic option for children with refractory BBD. METHODS: Patients <18 years old with refractory BBD were prospectively followed from 2018 to the present. Preoperative evaluation included spinal MRI and video urodynamics. Two-stage SNM implantation was executed with a minimum two-week stage 1 trial. Functional outcomes and complication rates were measured following validated questionnaires. RESULTS: Six patients completed staged implantation at a median age of 10.8 years (range 8.2–18). The median baseline Dysfunctional Voiding Scoring System (DVSS) score was 12.5 (10–22). At six months of followup, only one patient required adjunct bladder medication. Median DVSS at one-year followup was 5.5 (0–7). Symptomatic resolution was noted in three patients at six months, sustained over one year. Early surgical complications were reported in one (infection) and late complications in three (lead fracture, battery depletion, non-traumatic malfunction), requiring reimplantation at a median of 37.5 (1–49) months. Post-SNM reimplantation, oral medication and rectal therapy decreased, and DVSS scores improved by 30% (0–63.6) at six months. CONCLUSIONS: SNM is feasible and offers promising results for refractory pediatric BBD in Canada. The significant improvement of symptoms highlights the treatment’s potential, which must be balanced against the high need for revision detected at three years, possibly related to patients’ growth and high activity level.

Abstract:Children's non-neurogenic voiding dysfunction (NVD) is a syndrome characterized by lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTs) because of the inability to relax the external sphincter. Patients with NVD always suffer from urinary tract infections (UTI), incontinence, constipation. The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy of biofeedback treatment for children's NVD.PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library database were searched for all relevant studies. Two independent reviewers decided whether to include the study, conducted quality evaluation, and extracted article data. A random-effects model was used to calculate overall effect sizes. Risk ratio (RR) and mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) served as the summary statistics for meta-analysis. And sensitivity analysis was subsequently performed.Fifteen studies and 1274 patients were included in the systemic review, seven RCTs and 539 patients were included in meta-analysis. Meta-analysis showed efficacy of biofeedback treatment in following aspects, (1) relieving UTI (RR: 1.71, 95% CI: 1.11 to 2.64), (2) reducing PVR (MD: 9.51, 95% CI: 2.03 to 16.98), (3) increasing maximum urine flow rate (MD: 4.28, 95% CI: 2.14 to 6.42) and average urine flow rate (MD: 1.49, 95% CI: 0.53 to 2.46), (4) relieving constipation (RR: 1.59, 95% CI: 1.12 to 2.26)，(5) improving abnormal voiding pattern (RR: 1.75, 95% CI: 1.30 to 2.36) and abnormal EMG during voiding (RR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.25 to 1.91). The improvement of UTI symptoms, maximum urine flow rate and average urine flow rate took a longer time (12 months). In terms of daytime incontinence (RR: 1.20, 95% CI [0.96, 1.50], p = 0.11), nighttime incontinence (RR: 1.20, 95% CI [0.62, 2.32], p = 0.58), no significant difference was found between biofeedback treatment and standard urotherapy. The qualitative analysis showed that biofeedback treatment was beneficial for NVD.Compared with standard urotherapy, biofeedback treatment is effective for some symptoms, such as UTI and constipation, and can improve some uroflowmetric parameters, such as PVR. Biofeedback treatment seems to have a better long-term effect.

Abstract:Objectives To test whether sonographically determined fecal width (SDFW) correlates with symptom improvement in a population of children with Bladder and Bowel Dysfunction (BBD) managed with Standard Urotherapy, even for those patients lacking initial bowel complaints, Methods We retrospectively analyzed 200 pediatric BBD patients managed with SU for at least 3 months. Self-reported symptom improvement (complete, partial, no response) following International Children's Continence Society (ICCS) guidelines was tabulated. Patients with complex urologic diagnoses other than VUR were excluded. Pharmacotherapy choice, physical therapy (PT), UTI occurrence, and VUR status were tabulated. SDFW was recorded. Non-parametric ANOVA and parametric/non-parametric T-testing were used for analysis. Results Patients had a mean age of 9.5 years (4-12). 48 patients had no GI complaints at presentation. Urotherapy yielded complete, partial, and no responses in 14% (n=27), 33% (n=67), and 53% (n=106) of patients, respectively. The average SDFW for those patients with complete response (2.6cm) was smaller than the SDFW of those with a partial response (3.1cm) or no response (3.3cm) (p=0.0001). Non-compliance led to greater SDFW compared to compliant patients (3.7cm and 3.1cm respectively, p=0.0001). FW was unaffected by VUR, UTI, PT, or pharmacotherapy. Conclusions SDFW correlates well with symptom improvement in pediatric patients managed for BBD, confirming our hypothesis. SDFW is reasonable as single objective parameter to identify successful management in patients with BBD, extending to those without bowel complaints at presentation.

LUTS Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms

Abstract:Objectives To analyze the management strategies in the children who had treatment‐resistant dysfunctional voiding (DV). Methods Among 75 children with DV who underwent pelvic floor biofeedback therapy (BF) between 2013 and 2020, 16 patients (14 girls, 87.5%) with a mean age of 9.81 ± 2.53 years that showed incomplete clinical response following urotherapy and initial BF sessions were retrospectively reviewed. The demographic and clinical characteristics, DVSS, and uroflowmetry parameters were recorded before and after the initial BF sessions. Subsequent treatments after initial BF and clinical responses of patients were noted. Results Clinical success was observed in one patient by addition of an anticholinergic and in three patients with combination of salvage BF sessions and anticholinergics, whom had predominant overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms. The success rate of TENS alone and in combination with other treatment modalities was 88.8% (8/9 patients). In addition, salvage BF sessions (range 2 to 3) enabled clinical success in five (50%) of 10 cases as a combination with anticholinergics or TENS. In case of incomplete emptying without OAB, adequate clinical response to Botulinum‐A was observed during an average follow‐up of 29 months in two boys who did not respond to alpha‐blockers, even though one required repeat injection after 10 months. The total clinical success rate was 87.5% (14/16 patients) after a median follow‐up of 24 months. VV‐EBC and Qmax increased by a mean of 30.89% and 7.13 mL/min, respectively, whereas DVSS decreased by a mean of 8.88 points and PVR‐EBC decreased by a median of 19.04%. Conclusions Our findings showed that clinical success in resistant DV was achieved by various combination treatments in the majority of children. However, a small group may still have persistent, bothersome symptoms despite multiple treatment modalities.

A randomized control trial study of biofeedback and DDAVP in children with primary nocturnal enuresis

Abstract:Objective Primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE) is the most common voiding problem in children. There is a great demand for the treatment of PNE despite absence of underlying diseases because it is socially unacceptable by and can be very distressing to the patients and their parents. We evaluated the efficacy of biofeedback (BFB) therapy in childrens with PNE to DDAVP treatment in a randomized control trial (RCT). Methods PNE children who were diagnosed by nephrologists or urologists of children's hospital of Fudan University were divided randomly into two groups from July 2005 to January 2006. The biofeedback group received computer-assisted biofeedback program, sphincter contraction and relaxation can be transformed into visual signals. Both therapies were carried out for one month and then three month's follow-up were taken. Parameters of follow-up included enuresis diary,urine flow rate and AQP2 in urine.Results 50 PNE patients were recruited (26 boys and 24 girls), whose mean age was (8.4±0.9) years. There was equilibrious in age and gender in two groups divided randomly. At the end of treatment, the cure rate was 40% and total effective rate was 64% in DDAVP group while there were 48% and 92% respectively in biofeedback group. Total effective rate in the biofeedback group was significantly higher than that in the DDAVP group. Three months later, the cure rate was 20%, total effective rate was 52% and relapse rate was 20% in the DDAVP group while they were 40%, 84% and 8% respectively in the biofeedback group. The total effective rate in the biofeedback group was still significantly higher than that in the DDAVP group. The relapse rate and the cure rate in the biofeedback group were not different from those in the DDAVP. Uroflowmetry findings showed that in the biofeedback group the maximum flow rate before the treatment、at the end of the treatment and three months later was (15.8±1.7) mL·~s -1 , (22.5±2.2) mL·~s -1 and (18.1±2.0) mL·~s -1 respectively;and voided volume was (141.7±20.6) mL, (201.1±15.1) mL and (156.4±31.5) mL respectively. Both results increased after the biofeedback treatment (P<0.05), but there was no difference between pre-treatment and the second follow-up. Ratio of normal flow curve was 28%, 60% and 58.3% respectively, which increased at the second follow-up (P<0.05). Ratio of patients who had coordinative detrusor-sphincter contraction was 40%, 72% and 66.3% respectively, which increased after the treatment but decreased three months later. In DDAVP group the voided volume before the treatment、at the end of the treatment and three months later was (192.8±51.5) mL, (127.1±47.6) mL and (182.5±47.3) mL respectively;and voiding time was (17.0±3.3) s, (10.2±5.2) s and (14.5±5.1) s respectively. Both results decreased after the treatment (P<0.05), but there was no difference between pre-treatment and at the second follow-up. Ratio of normal flow curve was 52%, 50% and 54.5% and ratio of patients who had coordinative detrusor-sphincter contraction were 36%, 37.5% and 40.9% respectively. Both results were not different from that before the treatment. Two bands of AQP2 (29 000 and 43 000) were detected in the morning urine. Density of the two bands of patients were (0.3±0.1) and (4.4±1.2) while they were (16.4±6.1) and (31.5±6.9) respectively in the controls. Results in patients were significantly lower than that of the controls. Density of 29 000 bands of patients in the DDAVP group before the treatment, at the end of the treatment and three months later were (0.2±0.1),(15.8±2.3) and (4.4±1.2) while they were (4.9±1.4),(17.0±2.8) and (6.4±2.4) of 43 000 respectively. Data at the end of the treatment were significantly higher than those before but three months later the results of 43 000 decreased. The data of patients in the biofeedback group was (0.4±0.2), (1.2±0.8), (2.9±1.3) in 29 000 while (3.9±1.9), (4.9±2.4) and (5.1±1.6) in 43 000, which was not different from that before the treatment. Conclusions Biofeedback and DDAVP are both effective therapies for PNE in children. Biofeedback is helpful in correcting voiding dysfunction and DDAVP can increase AQP2 protein in the urine. With higher effective rate within four month, biofeedback is strongly recommended. However better treatment outcome needs a multidisciplinary team of nephrologists, urologists and therapists.
Effects of nonsurgical, minimally or noninvasive therapies for urinary incontinence due to neurogenic bladder: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Therapeutic Advances in Chronic Disease

Abstract:Objective: To determine the effects of nonsurgical, minimally or noninvasive therapies on urge urinary incontinence (UUI) symptoms and quality of life (QoL) in individuals with neurogenic bladder (NGB). Data Sources: Cochrane library, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PEDro, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched from inception to September 2021. Review Methods: Randomized controlled trials that compared therapies such as intravaginal electrical stimulation (IVES), transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS), pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT), and behavioural therapy (BT) to control were included. Study screening, data extraction, and study quality assessments were performed by two independent authors. Results: Fourteen trials with 804 participants were included in the study after screening of 4281 potentially relevant articles. Meta-analyses revealed a significant effect of electrical stimulation on UUI due to multiple sclerosis (standardized mean difference (SMD): −0.614; 95% confidence interval (CI): −1.023, −0.206; p = 0.003) and stroke (SMD: −2.639; 95% CI: −3.804, −1.474; p = 0.000). The pooled analyses of TTNS (weighted mean difference (WMD): −12.406; 95% CI: −16.015, −8.797; p = 0.000) and BT (WMD: −9.117; 95% CI: −14.746, −3.487; p = 0.002) revealed significant effects of these interventions on QoL in people with Parkinson’s disease. However, meta-analyses revealed nonsignificant effects for PFMT (WMD: −0.751; 95% CI: −2.426, 0.924; p = 0.380) and BT (WMD: −0.597; 95% CI: −1.278, 0.083; p = 0.085) on UUI due to Parkinson’s disease. Conclusions: Our meta-analyses found electrical stimulation to be beneficial for improving the symptoms of UUI among people with multiple sclerosis and those with stroke. Our review also revealed that TTNS and BT might improve QoL for people with NGB due to Parkinson’s disease, although the effects of PFMT and BT on UUI warrant further investigation.

Abstract:Abstract Three lines of research have been pursued in the literature to study the link between phonology and stuttering: (1) effects of phonological complexity on the location (loci) of stutter events; (2) outcomes of standardized test measures in children who do and do not stutter; and (3) studies of phonological encoding in children and adults who stutter. This review synthesizes findings from these three lines of research to address the purported link between phonology and stuttering and its potential implications for stuttering treatment. Results from the loci studies offer some support for the role of phonological complexity in the occurrence of stuttering. Studies of performance in standardized tests of phonology have not identified differences between children who do and do not stutter. Studies of phonological encoding have been equivocal in reporting differences between children and adults who stutter and those who do not stutter. Several cautions are raised in interpreting the findings from the discussed studies, and despite the mixed findings, some implications for treatments are considered.
