Abstract:To search for robust CO2 capture materials, several N-(3-aminopropyl)aminoethyl tributylphosphonium amino acid salts ([apaeP(444)][AA])-type task specific ionic liquids (TSILs) were synthesized and immobilized into porous silica support through a facile impregnation vaporization method. The ILs and thus prepared sorbents, Sorb-AA, were well characterized, and their CO2 sorption and desorption behaviors under temperature- and vacuum-swing conditions were investigated. The Its can be immobilized facilely into silica up to 1/1 IL/SiO2 weight ratio. After IL loading, the sorbents retain reasonably high specific surface area and porosity and therefore exhibit rapid sorption and desorption rates as well as excellent sorption capacity and selectivity and can be used repeatedly. Among them, Sorb-Lys has the highest CO2 sorption capacity. It can capture 1.54 mmol or 67.9 mg CO2 per gram sorbent from a simulated flue gas containing 14% CO2 in each cycle of sorption and desorption. Sorb-Gly has slightly less CO2 sorption capacity, 1.37 mmol or 60.4 mg CO2 per gram sorbent from the simulated flue gas, and much better long-term durability. It is estimated that it can retain 90% sorption capacity even after 1.38 x 10(3) cycles. These robust sorbents, especially Sorb-Gly, exhibit excellent potential in CO2 capture applications.

Abstract:To capture carbon dioxide directly from ambient air, the fabrication of supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) on asymmetric and symmetric microporous poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes were studied. The effect of support membrane structure on the IL loading, the stability of fabricated SILMs, and the carbon dioxide (CO2) capturing abilities of both SILMs were evaluated. The evaluations include the gas permeation of pure CO2 and nitrogen (N-2), the mixed CO2-N-2 gases containing 50%, 10% and 1% CO2, and the directly compressed ambient air. The results demonstrated that pure CO2 showed the highest permeance, followed by CO2-air and then N-2. Compared with asymmetric SILMs which had higher gas permeance, the symmetric SILMs had better selectivity for CO2/N-2, to more than 20 of CO2/N-2 selectivity, for both single and mixed gases. The SILMs also were found to be capable of capturing CO2 from air from 2 to more than 5 of CO2/air selectivity for separation of air enriched with low CO2 concentrations (10%, 1% and zero) as the transmembrane pressure increased to 0.25 MPa. Thus, this work might provide a potential method for sequestering CO2 directly from atmosphere to avoid the need for extensive CO2-transportation. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Selective separation of CO2 from flue gas conforms to the criterion of sustainable society. Herein, a series of imidazolium-based phenolate ionic liquids (ILs) that have dual-site interaction centers to isolate CO2 from N-2 by supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) is designed and prepared. Density, viscosity, and CO2 solubility in these ILs were measured. The effects of the electron-withdrawing or electron-donating ability of the substituents on the anion, the operation temperature and partial pressure on the permeability of CO2, and the ideal selectivity of CO2/N-2 were investigated systematically. High permeability (up to 2540 barrers) and selectivity of CO2/N-2 (up to 127) are achieved in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium phenolate ([bmim][PhO]) containing 15 wt % H2O under humidified condition. A novel facilitated transport mechanism, transfer of CO2 from carbene to phenolated anion, is proposed based on NMR, FT-IR, and theoretical calculation results. The new pathway is believed to offer an alternative opportunity for designing novel CO2 separation materials.
Supported Ionic Liquid Membrane with Highly-permeable Polyamide Armor by In Situ Interfacial Polymerization for Durable CO2 Separation

Abstract:Supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs), owing to their capacities in harnessing physicochemical properties of ionic liquid for exceptional CO2 solubility, have emerged as a promising platform for CO2 extraction. Despite great achievements, existing SILMs suffer from poor structural and performance stability under high-pressure or long-term operations, significantly limiting their applications. Herein, a one-step and in situ interfacial polymerization strategy is proposed to elaborate a thin, mechanically-robust, and highly-permeable polyamide armor on the SILMs to effectively protect ionic liquid within porous supports, allowing for intensifying the overall stability of SILMs without compromising CO2 separation performance. The armored SILMs have a profound increase of breakthrough pressure by 105% compared to conventional counterparts without armor, and display high and stable operating pressure exceeding that of most SILMs previously reported. It is further demonstrated that the armored SILMs exhibit ultrahigh ideal CO2/N2 selectivity of about 200 and excellent CO2 permeation of 78 barrers upon over 150 h operation, as opposed to the full failure of CO2 separation performance within 36 h using conventional SILMs. The design concept of armor provides a flexible and additional dimension in developing high-performance and durable SILMs, pushing the practical application of ionic liquids in separation processes.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) have excellent ability to capture CO 2 due to their unique properties. The observation on the evolution process of solid-supported IL nanomembranes at the nanoscale benefits understanding the interaction between IL nanomembranes and CO 2 . In this work, we have investigated the CO 2 -induced evolution process of solid-supported nanomembranes formed by the imidazolium-based ILs with alkyl chains of different lengths but with a common anion by in-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). The morphology evolution and mechanical properties of the IL nanomembranes have been quantitatively analyzed. The results show that similar phenomena were observed for the three IL nanomembranes, i.e., the absorption of CO 2 presents a maximal impact on the innermost layer of the solid-supported IL nanomembranes. The innermost layer of IL nanomembranes becomes fragmented and tends to re-assemble into a multi-layer structure, while the area of the multi-layer IL nanomembranes expands due to the incorporation of some small regions. In addition, the morphology changes of IL nanomembranes are dependent on the length of cation alkyl side chain. For the [BMI][TFSI] nanomembrane, the morphology change is faster than the other two IL nanomembranes in the preliminary stage of CO 2 absorption and reaches a stable state in a shorter time. AFM quantitative nanomechanical measurements show that Young ́s moduli of the three IL nanomembranes significantly decrease after CO 2 absorption, which supports that CO 2 molecules could weaken the interaction among IL anions, cations and mica, and thus lead to the morphology changes of the three solid-supported IL nanomembranes. Our work provides microscopic insights into the process of CO 2 absorption by ILs, which lays a foundation for further studying the interaction between CO 2 and solid-supported IL nanomembranes.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials-based membranes show great potential for gas separation. Herein an ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM][BF4]), was confined in the 2D channels of MoS2-laminated membranes via an infiltration process. Compared with the corresponding bulk [BMIM][BF4], nanoconfined [BMIM][BF4] shows an obvious incremental increase in freezing point and a shift of vibration bands. The resulting MoS2-supported ionic liquid membrane (MoS2 SILM) exhibits excellent CO2 separation performance with high CO2 permeance (47.88 GPU) and superb selectivity for CO2/N2 (131.42), CO2/CH4 (43.52), and CO2/H2 (14.95), which is much better than that of neat [BMIM][BF4] and [BMIM][BF4]-based membranes. The outstanding performance of MoS2 SILMs is attributed to the nanoconfined [BMIM][BF4], which enables fast transport of CO2. Long-term operation also reveals the durability and stability of the prepared MoS2 SILMs. The method of confining ILs in the 2D nanochannels of 2D materials may pave a new way for CO2 capture and separation.

Abstract:The covalent organic framework (COF) shows great potential for use in gas separation because of its uniform and high-density sub-nanometer sized pores. However, most of the COF pore sizes are large, and there are mismatches with the gas pairs (3–6 Å), and the steric hindrance cannot work in gas selectivity. In this work, one type of COF (NUS-2) supported ionic liquid membrane (COF-SILM) was prepared for use in CO 2 /N 2 separation. The separation performance was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. There was an ultrahigh CO 2 permeability up to 2.317 × 10 6 GPU, and a better CO 2 selectivity was obtained when compared to that of N 2 . The physical mechanism of ultrahigh permeability and CO 2 selectivity are discussed in detail. The ultrathin membrane, high-density pores and high transmembrane driving force are responsible for the ultrahigh permeability of CO 2 . The different adsorption capabilities of ionic liquid (IL) for CO 2 and N 2 , as well as a gating effect, which allows CO 2 passage and inhibits N 2 passage, contribute to the better CO 2 selectivity over N 2 . Moreover, the effects of the COF layer number and IL thickness on gas separation performance are also discussed. This work provides a molecular level understanding of the gas separation mechanism of COF-SILM, and the simulation results show one potential outstanding CO 2 separation membrane for future applications.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide capture from industrial gases (i.e., flue gases and natural gas) is a crucial process for reducing the environmental impacts of acid gas emissions. However, carbon dioxide capture that is generally performed by amine-based solvent faces operational problems due to the properties of the solvent. Recently, ionic liquids (ILs) have emerged as promising candidates for replacing the amine-based solvent due to their low vapor pressure (near-zero), high stability, as well as tunable structure and properties. The functionalized ILs are considered superior in terms of their ease of regeneration as well as high absorption capacity and selectivity toward CO2. Combining the functionalized ILs with membrane processes has opened up a new horizon in CO2 capture technology. This review comprehensively summarizes the latest developments in the application of ionic liquid membranes (ILMs) for CO2 capture, including supported ILMs (SILMs), poly-ILMs (PILMs), polymer-IL composite membranes, mixed-matrix-membranes, with special attention to ILM contactors. The absorption mechanisms of CO2 in the ILs are pictured and discussed.

Abstract:Abstract The ionic liquids (ILs), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate treated with radiofrequency (RF) plasma, is proposed for functionalization and immobilization on polyethersulfone (PES) supports to form supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) for CO 2 separation. The effects of treatment time and transmembrane pressure difference on CO 2 permeance were evaluated. The best gas permeation performance is obtained when the treatment time is 10 min, and the transmembrane pressure difference is 0.25 MPa. Characterization of the materials by FTIR, XPS and NMR demonstrates that ILs is grafted with carboxyl groups and deprotonated through plasma treatment. A preliminary mechanism for the plasma treatment and facilitated transport of CO 2 has been proposed based on this basis.

Abstract:Developing high-performance membranes for selective separation of CO2 is still a focus point in light of massive CO2 emission. Salting-out effect is an useful method for maximizing CO2 separation performance in membranes by inhibiting permeation of inert gases (N-2 and CH4). In this work, we designed a class of fluorion-based protic ionic liquids (FPILs) and characterized their chemical structures. Aqueous FPIL solutions were prepared and their densities as well as viscosities were measured. Supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) immobilized with FPIL solutions were prepared, and the permeability of CO2, N-2 and CH4 were determined under humidified condition. Facilitated transport of CO2 and salting-out effect on N-2 and CH4 in FPIL solutions were found. High CO2 permeability (up to 2572 barrers) and superior CO2/N-2 and CO2/CH4 selectivity (up to 774 and 387, respectively) were obtained at 40 degrees C and 0.1 bar of CO2 partial pressure in [DMAPAH][F] solution of 40 wt% water. In addition, effects of CO2 transmembrane pressure, water content and operating temperature on gas permeation as well as facilitated transport mechanism and salting-out effect were systemically invesgated. This work offers a new strategy for designing ILs-based membranes for efficient seperation of CO2.
Supported Protic-Ionic-liquid Membranes with Facilitated Transport Mechanism for the Selective Separation of CO2

Abstract:In this work, four diamine-monocarboxylate-based protic ionic liquids (PILs) were firstly introduced to prepare supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) and the selective separation of CO2/N-2 and CO2/CH4 gas pairs in these SILMs under humidified condition were investigated. The effects of transmembrane pressure and temperature on the permeablity of CO2 and the permselectivity of CO2/N-2 and CO2/CH4 gas pairs were also studied. It is found that the supported PILs with 15 wt% water exhibit much higher CO2 permeabilities under humidified conditon than those pure PILs under dry condition. The permeability increases with the decreasing transmembrane pressure, indicating a typical feature of facilitated transport membrane. The permeability of CO2 increases with the increasing temperature whereas the permselectivity of CO2/N-2 and CO2/CH4 decreases at the same time. The highest CO2/N-2 selectivities obtained is 151, and the highest CO2/CH4 selectivities is 72. These PILs is found to be tunable and selective carriers of CO2 in the presence of water, and the supported protic-ionic liquid membranes exhibit competitive permeability and higher permselectivity in comparison with the supported aprotic- ionic- liquid membranes.
The Molecular Transport Behavior of CO2 in Ionic Polyimides and Ionic Liquid Composite Membrane Materials.

Abstract:Ionic polyimides (i-PI) are a new class of polymer materials that are very promising for CO2 capture membranes, and recent experimental studies have demonstrated their enhanced separation performance with the addition of imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs). However, there is very little known about the molecular-level interactions in these systems, which give rise to interesting gas adsorption and diffusion characteristics. In this study, we use a combination of Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations to analyze the equilibrium and transport properties of CO2 molecules in the i-PI and i-PI+IL composite materials. The addition of several different common ILs are modeled, which have a plasticization effect on the i-PI, lowering the glass transition temperature (Tg). The solubility of CO2 strongly correlates with the Tg, but the diffusion demonstrates more unpredictable behavior. At low concentrations, the IL has a blocking effect, leading to reduced diffusion rates. However, as the IL surpasses a threshold value the relationship is inverted, and the IL has a facilitating effect on the gas transport. This behavior is attributed to the simultaneous contributions of the increased i-PI plasticization at higher IL concentrations (facilitating gas hopping rates from cavity-to-cavity) and the increased IL continuity throughout the system, enabling more favorable transport pathways for the CO2 diffusion.

Abstract:Age and sex specific data were obtained concerning diagnostic radiographic procedures performed in the Netherlands over the years 1984-1985. The average annual procedure frequency per caput excluding dental examinations in dentists' practices and mass survey examinations amounted to 0.537. Male and female examination frequencies were determined as 0.543 and 0.531, respectively. Trends in X-ray examination frequency were followed from 1967 to 1988. Until 1982, the X-ray examination frequency was increasing by an average of 4% per year. Mainly because of a decrease in high dose examinations, the annual examination frequency per caput has been decreasing since then. As a consequence, the somatic effective dose equivalent to the population from diagnostic X-ray examinations is expected to decrease to a value of about 0.4 mSv for the year 1989.

Abstract:Ionic liquid (IL), a neutral assembly of charged ions, is a potential material for CO2 capture and storage. The practicality of IL can be improved by confining it into porous substrates and nanopores, which will further enhance the performance of IL by changing its structure. Additionally, an external electric field (EEF) should also influence the IL structure through its charged components. In this work, we applied an EEF on a MoS2 supported ionic liquid membrane (MoS2-SILM) to selectively facilitate CO2 transport by the dual influence of MoS2 nanochannel and EEF. The redistribution of nanoconfined IL under an EEF resulted in the increase in free volume of IL and decrease in anion-cation interactions, which led to the enhancement of CO2 solubility and diffusion, and further, the permeance. Compared with the MoS2-SILM without an EEF, the CO2 permeance was enhanced from 89 GPU to 200 GPU, and the selectivity of CO2/H-2, CO2/CH4 and CO2/N-2 was also enlarged 2-3 times. An interesting phenomenon was the asymmetric CO2 separation performance influenced by the CO2 adsorbed on MoS2 nanosheets under a positive and negative EEF, which may establish a new strategy to design high-performance gas separation membranes.
Facilitated separation of CO 2 and SO 2 through supported liquid membranes using carboxylate-based ionic liquids

Abstract:The facilitated separation of CO2 and SO2 in a series of supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) impregnated with carboxylate-based ILs (including monocarboxylates and dicarboxylates) was investigated systematically under humidified condition. The effects of transmembrane pressure difference and temperature on the permeability of acidic gases and permselectivity of gas pairs were studied. It is found that dicarboxylate-based ILs are a class of tunable media for the selective separation of acidic gases. When the anions of dicarboxylate-based ILs are fully deprotonated, they could be used as effective carriers for the selective separation of CO2. The permeabilities of CO2 in triethylbutylammonium malonate ([N2224]2[malonate]) and triethylbutylammonium maleate ([N2224]2[maleate]) under the partial pressure of 0.1bar range from 2147 to 2840barrers and the permselectivities of CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 in them approach to 178–265 and 98–221, respectively. However, when the anions of dicarboxylate-based ILs are half deprotonated, they are efficient solvents for the selective separation of SO2. Triethylbutylammonium dimalonate ([N2224][dimalonate]) could facilitate the permeation of SO2 with a permeability of 7208barrers under the transmembrane pressure difference of 0.05bar, and the permselectivities of SO2/N2, SO2/CH4 and SO2/CO2 are 585, 271 and 18, respectively. The mechanism of facilitated separation is explained successfully from the reversible reactions of CO2 and SO2 with different forms of dicarboxylate-based ILs.

Abstract:The CO2 adsorption capacity and the CO2/N2 selectivity of a series of Supported Ionic Liquid-Phase adsorbents (SILPs), including the novel inversely structured SILP "Inverse SILPs", are thoroughly investigated. ZIF-8, ZIF-69 and ZIF-70 were involved as the solid matrix, while ILs, having tricyanomethanide (TCM) as an anion and alkyl-methylimidazolium of different alkyl chain lengths (C2, C6, C8) as a cation, were used as the liquid constituents of the SILPs. The ultimate target of the work was to ratify a few recently reported cases of enhanced CO2 absorptivity in ILs due to their incorporation in ZIFs and to corroborate phenomena of CO2/N2 selectivity improvements in ZIFs, due to the presence of ILs. This ambiguity originates from the vague assumption that the pores of the ZIF are filled with the IL phase, and the free pore volume of a SILP is almost zero. Yet, through the integration of theoretical predictions with N2 porosimetry analysis of an actual sample, it is suggested that a thin layer of IL covered the exterior surface of a ZIF crystal. This layer could act as an impermeable barrier for N2, inhibiting the gas molecules from reaching the empty cavities laying underneath the liquid film during porosimetry analysis. This consideration is based on the fact that the solubility of N2 in the IL is very low, and the diffusivity at 77 K is negligible. In this context, the observed result reflects an averaged adsorptivity of both the IL phase and the empty pores of the ZIF. Therefore, it is incorrect to attribute the adsorption capacity of the SILP solely to the mass of the IL that 'hypothetically' nests inside the pore cavities. In fact, the CO2 adsorption capacity of SILPs is always less than the average adsorptivity of an ideal ZIF/IL mixture, where the two phases do not interact. This reduction occurs because some ZIF pores may become inaccessible, particularly when the IL forms a layer on the pore walls, leaving only a small empty core accessible to CO2 molecules. Additionally, the IL layer masks the active sites on the ZIF's pore walls. It should also be noted that the CO2/N2 selectivity increases only when the ZIF's pores are completely filled with the IL phase. This is because ILs have a higher CO2/N2 selectivity compared to the bare ZIF.

Abstract:Membrane reactors are promising for achieving a variety of thermodynamically limited reactions. However, few studies have focused on quantitative analysis of the coupling of reaction and separation matching of membranes. In this work, based on the experimental validation of the forced flow through principle of membrane reactors for catalytic CO 2 cycloaddition, describes the membrane reaction performance of supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) in the presence of primary irreversible reactions, and draws on a dusty gas model to calculate fluxes within the gas pore space of the support. The degree of product separation is theoretically investigated in relation to the membrane permeation, the resistance difference between the ionic liquid membrane and the support, the liquid loading of the catalyst layer and the fluid flow rate, and adjustable parameters of the model are proposed to predict the SILM performance. In addition, two dimensionless numbers, namely Damköhler ( Da ) and Péclet ( Pe ) numbers, are introduced to correlate the equilibrium constant-conversion- DaPe relationship, and the reaction kinetics and permeate flux compatibility are analyzed with the help of CFD simulations, which incorporate parameters of operating conditions and stoichiometric coefficients of the reaction, as well as optimization of reactor geometrical, providing insights to achieve higher conversion improvements.

Abstract:As a part of global warming reduction strategies, CO 2 capture and storage (CCS) is considered a promising and effective method, which can be classified as absorption and adsorption, chemical looping combustion and cryogenic distillation, hydrate-based separation, and membrane separation. But, the high energy requirement, solvent loss and degradation, corrosive nature, and toxicity of solvents can limit the applications. Developing novel techniques and materials are attracting high attention to achieve superior capacities. The supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) as a part of ionic liquids (ILs) have shown great potential for efficient and cost-effective separation of CO 2 from the gaseous flow. The present review demonstrates the mechanisms, advantages, difficulties, and disadvantages of CO 2 capture by SILMs and compares them with various conventional methods. A major part of this review covers the tunability of SILMs, experimental data of solubility, diffusivity, permeability, and selectivity of CO 2 in various combinations of ILs, membrane supports, and additives. Lastly, the stability of SILMs, reusability of ILs, membrane wetting, challenges, and future recommendations are presented.

Facilitated Transport of CO_2 Through Supported Liquid Membranes with Task-Specific Ionic Liquids

Abstract:New supported ionic liquid membranes immobilized with five triethylbutylammione-based ionic liquids([N_(2224)][Malonate],[N_(2224)][Meleate],[N_(2224)][Acetate],[N_(2224)][Propionate], and[N_(2224)][Tf_2N]) on polyethersulfone microfiltration membrane have been prepared to facilitate the transport of CO_2.Factors such as the nature of ionic liquids,operating temperature and transmembrane pressure,water vapor content were found to have significant influence on CO_2 separation performance.The selectivity of CO_2/N_2,CO_2/CH,pairs were observed to be as high as 250,220 at 10 KPa of CO_2 partial pressure at 40℃in PES membrane supported with [N_(02224)][Meleate].Experimental results indicated that these low-alkaline ionic liquids immobilized into solid membrane have the great potential to achieve excellent permeability and selectivity for the purpose of large scale industrial applications.

Abstract:Recently, imidazole-based ionic liquid supported membranes have found wide application in gas separation and purification, deriving of their good solubility for CO2 and their ultrathin membrane thickness. Our previous works preliminarily showed that three primary interactions, including the interaction between passing gas and ionic liquid, the interaction between anion and cation of ionic liquid, as well as the interaction between ionic liquid and supporting membrane, play crucial roles determining the gas permeability and CO2 selectivity over N2. However, a systematic discussion of these three interactions to disclose the underlying separation mechanism is lack. In this study, adopting molecular dynamic (MD) simulation and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, three ionic liquids including of [BMIM][BF4], [BMIM][PF6] and [BMIM][Tf2N] with high CO2 solubility are selected as research objects, these three interactions were discussed to reveal the gas separation mechanism in MoS2-SILM. Simulation results indicate that the interaction between gas molecules and ILs determines the gas solubility and selectivity, and the [BMIM][BF4] shows superior separation performance over other two ILs. In addition, the interaction between ILs and MoS2 sheets, together with the interaction between cation and anion of ILs, determine the layered structure of confined ILs, which is preferential for gas transport. Furthermore, the gas permeability difference between confined ILs and bulk ILs, and the influence of interlayer spacing were also discussed. Our study provides fundamental insight to the underlying gas separation mechanism and beneficial guidelines for device design.
