Abstract:As contemporary technology advances, scientists are striving to identify new approaches to managing several diseases. Compared to the more popular physiochemical synthesis, the plant-derived combination of metallic nanoparticles using plant secondary metabolites as a precursor has a number of benefits, including low expenses, low energy consumption, biocompatibility, and medicinal usefulness. This study intends to explore the impacts of using plant-derived synthetic materials including metallic nanoparticles (NPs), emphasizing the benefits of their broad use in next-generation treatments for cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and vector diseases. This comprehensive analysis investigates the potential of plant-derived remedies for diseases and looks at cutting-edge nanoformulation techniques aimed at addressing the function of the nanoparticles that accompany these organic substances. The purpose of the current review is to determine how plant extracts contribute to the synthesis of Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), Gold nanoparticles (GtNPs), and platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs). It provides an overview of the many phytocompounds and their functions in biomedicine, including antibacterial, antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. Furthermore, this study placed a special focus on a range of applications, including drug delivery systems, diagnostics and therapy, the present benefits of nanoparticles (NPs), their biomedical uses in medical technology, and their toxicities.

Abstract:Nanoparticles and nanotechnology developments continue to advance the livelihood of humankind. However, health challenges due to microorganisms and cancerous cells continue to threaten many people’s lives globally. Therefore, new technological interventions are of great importance. The phytochemicals present in medicinal plants are suggested as biocompatible, cost-effective, and regenerative sources that can be utilized for the green synthesis of nanoparticles. Different plant extracts with various phytochemical constituents can form nanoparticles with specific shapes, sizes, and optical properties. This review focuses on advances in green nanotechnology and provides details on reliable synthetic routes toward medically and biocompatible relevant metallic nanoparticles. We cover a wide range of applications that use phytonanoparticles with an in-depth look at what makes these materials interesting. The study also provides details of the literature on the interventions made in phytonanotechnology for the production of plant-mediated synthesis and capped metallic nanoparticles and their applications in various industries. It was observed that a variety of plants have been well studied, and detailed findings have been reported; however, the study of Phyllanthus is still in its early stages, and more needs to be uncovered.

Abstract:Abstract Nanotechnology holds an emerging domain of medical science as it can be utilized virtually in all areas. Phyto-constituents are valuable and encouraging candidates for synthesizing green silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) which possess great potentials toward chronic diseases. This review gives an overview of the Green approach of AgNPs synthesis and its characterization. The present review further explores the potentials of Phyto-based AgNPs toward anticancer and antiviral activity including its probable mechanism of action. Green synthesized AgNPs prepared by numerous medicinal plants extract are critically reviewed for cancer and viral infection. Abstract:In the quest to effectively diagnose and treat the diseases that afflict mankind, the development of a tool capable of simultaneous detection and treatment would provide a significant cornerstone for the survival and control of these diseases. Theranostics denotes a portmanteau of therapeutics and diagnostics which simultaneously detect and treat ailments. Research advances have initiated the advent of theranostics in modern medicine. Overall, theranostics are drug delivery systems with molecular or targeted imaging agents integrated into their structure. The application of theranostics is rising exponentially due to the urgent need for treatments that can be utilized for diagnostic imaging as an aid in precision and personalised medicine. Subsequently, the emergence of nanobiotechnology and the green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) has provided one such avenue for nanoscale development and research. Of interest is the drastic rise in the use of medicinal plants in the synthesis of MNPs which have been reported to be potentially effective in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. At present, medicinal plant-derived MNPs have been cited to have broad pharmacological applications and have been studied for their potential use in the treatment and management of cancer, malaria, microbial and cardiovascular diseases. The subject of this article regards the role of medicinal plants in the synthesis of MNPs and the potential role of MNPs in the field of theranostics.

Abstract:Highlights • Plant endophyte-mediated silver nanoparticles ( Phyllo -AgNPs) were synthesized using an eco-friendly and non-toxic method. • FT-IR, XRD, SEM-EDAX, and TEM studies confirm the morphology of Phyllo -AgNPs. • Biosynthesized Phyllo -AgNPs were evaluated for their therapeutic efficacy. • Phyllo -AgNPs exhibited significant antibacterial, antioxidant, and antidiabetic activities. • Phyllo -AgNPs could be employed in pharmaceutical applications. Fungi-mediated biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles is one of the promising nanomanufacturing processes. Using endophytic fungi isolated from potential medicinal plants has emerged as a novel approach for producing several metal oxide nanoparticles in a green and cost-effective manner. The present study validates the biomimetic synthesis of silver nanoparticles of endophytic fungus ( Phyllosticta capitalensis Henn.) ( Phyllo -AgNPs) isolated from the leaves of Annona muricata and the effect of process variables, i.e., reductant concentration, ratio of AgNo 3 to reductant concentration, reaction time and reaction pH to achieve maximum efficiency using the factorial design approach. The nanoparticle formation was confirmed by absorption peaks between 400nm - 500nm, followed by their characterization by UV-visible spectroscopy, TEM, SEM-EDX, XRD, particle size, and zeta potential analysis. The in-vitro antioxidant, antidiabetic and antimicrobial potential (agar well dfiffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration) of Phyllo -AgNPs at various concentrations were assessed. The Phyllo -AgNPs scavenged the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical and inhibited the activity of α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes at an IC 50 of 31.75±0.70, 39.32±1.12 and 28.56±1.08 μg/mL, respectively. The antimicrobial potential was determined against Listeria monocytogenes , Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli and, Salmonella typhimurium . The study revealed the therapeutic potential of Phyllo -AgNPs against pathogenic microorganisms. Additionally, the in-vitro antioxidant and antidiabetic activities showed improved results compared to the standard (ascorbic acid and acarbose). By taking note of this, Phyllo -AgNPs can be further studied for pre-clinical trials, which would be beneficial in developing novel medicines with no adverse effects for the benefit of mankind. Abstract:The application of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs), especially that of silver, gold, cobalt, and zinc as antimicrobial, anticancer, drug delivery, contrast, and bioimaging agents has transformed the field of medicine. Their functions, which are attributed to their physicochemical properties, have gained prominence in various technological fields. Although MNPs can be produced via rigorous physical and chemical techniques, in recent years, a biological approach utilizing natural materials has been developed. With the increasing enthusiasm for safe and efficient nanomaterials, the biological method incorporating microorganisms and plants is preferred over physical and chemical methods of nanoparticle synthesis. Of these bio-entities, plants have received great attention owing to their capability to reduce and stabilize MNPs in a single one-pot protocol. South Africa is home to ~10% of the world’s plant species, making it a major contributor to the world’s ecological scenery. Despite the documented contribution of South African plants, particularly in herbal medicine, very few of these plants have been explored for the synthesis of the noble MNPs. This paper provides a review of some important South African medicinal plants that have been utilized for the synthesis of MNPs. The enhanced biological properties of the biogenic MNPs attest to their relevance in medicine. In this endeavour, more of the African plant biodiversity must be explored for the synthesis of MNPs and be validated for their potential to be translated into future nanomedicine.

Abstract:Worldwide health problem generally due to the lack of widespread and comprehensive early detection methods, the associated poor prognosis of patients diagnosed in later stages of the disease and its increasing incidence on a global scale. Indeed, the struggle to fight cancer is one of the greatest challenges of mankind. Centella Asiatica (CA) and Andrographis Paniculata (AP) are two medicinal plant extracts used in the environmentally friendly extracellular production of metallic gold nanoparticles. The size, shape, stability and crystallinity of the synthesized gold nanoparticles were characterised and various characterization methods were used; UV–Vis spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Zeta potential, Selected Area Electron Diffraction, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy equipped with elemental mapping in order to confirm the formation of gold nanoparticles. The TEM results showed that gold nanoparticles were mostly spherical in shape. Their effects on anti-bacterial, catalytic, photocatalytic and anticancer cell lines were examined. The MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] test was used to confirm the cytotoxic properties of both gold nanoparticles samples and the results showed that both the human lung cancer and human breast cancer cell line growth and proliferation were inhibited. Strong antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacteria and moderate antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria were identified. It has also been shown that gold nanoparticles have catalytic properties for reducing 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol. By degrading the two dyes methyl orange and congo red in the presence of nano catalysts, the photocatalytic activity of synthesized nanoparticles has been assessed.

Abstract:In recent times, nanoparticles have experienced a significant upsurge in popularity, primarily owing to their minute size and their remarkable ability to modify physical, chemical, and biological properties. This burgeoning interest can be attributed to the expanding array of biomedical applications where nanoparticles find utility. These nanoparticles, typically ranging in size from 10 to 100 nm, exhibit diverse shapes, such as spherical, discoidal, and cylindrical configurations. These variations are not solely influenced by the manufacturing processes but are also intricately linked to interactions with surrounding stabilizing agents and initiators. Nanoparticles can be synthesized through physical or chemical methods, yet the biological approach emerges as the most sustainable and eco-friendly alternative among the three. Among the various nanoparticle types, silver nanoparticles have emerged as the most encountered and widely utilized due to their exceptional properties. What makes the synthesis of silver nanoparticles even more appealing is the application of plant-derived sources as reducing agents. This approach not only proves to be cost-effective but also significantly reduces the synthesis time. Notably, silver nanoparticles produced through plant-mediated processes have garnered considerable attention in recent years due to their notable medicinal capabilities. This comprehensive review primarily delves into the diverse medicinal attributes of silver nanoparticles synthesized using plant-mediated techniques. Encompassing antimicrobial properties, cytotoxicity, wound healing, larvicidal effects, anti-angiogenesis activity, antioxidant potential, and antiplasmodial activity, the paper extensively covers these multifaceted roles. Additionally, an endeavor is made to provide an elucidated summary of the operational mechanisms underlying the pharmacological actions of silver nanoparticles.

Effect of Temperature on Blue-Green Algae (Cyanobacteria) in Lake Mendota

Abstract:The temperature optimum for photosynthesis of natural populations of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) from Lake Mendota was determined during the period of June to November 1976. In the spring, when temperatures ranged from 0 to 20°C, there were insignificant amounts of blue-green algae in the lake (less than 1% of the biomass). During the summer and fall, when the dominant phytoplankton was blue-green algae, the optimum temperature for photosynthesis was usually between 20 and 30°C, whereas the environmental temperatures during this period ranged from 24°C in August to 12°C in November. In general, the optimum temperature for photosynthesis was higher than the environmental temperature. More importantly, significant photosynthesis also occurred at low temperature in these samples, which suggests that the low temperature alone is not responsible for the absence of blue-green algae in Lake Mendota during the spring. Temperature optima for growth and photosynthesis of laboratory cultures of the three dominant blue-green algae in Lake Mendota were determined. The responses of the two parameters to changes in temperature were similar; thus, photosynthesis appears to be a valid index of growth. However, there was little photosynthesis by laboratory cultures at low temperatures, in contrast to the natural samples. Evidence for an interaction between temperature and low light intensities in their effect on photosynthesis of natural samples is presented.

Abstract:A large number of metallic nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by using different plant extracts and microbes including bacteria, fungi viruses and microalgae. Some of these metallic nanoparticles showed strong antimicrobial activities against phytopathogens. Here, we summarized these green-synthesized nanoparticles from plants and microbes and their applications in the control of plant pathogens. We also discussed the potential deleterious effects of the metallic nanoparticles on plants and beneficial microbial communities associated with plants. Overall, this review calls for attention regarding the use of green-synthesized metallic nanoparticles in controlling plant diseases and clarification of the risks to plants, plant-associated microbial communities, and environments before using them in agriculture.

Abstract:Interest in “green nanotechnology” in nanoparticle biosynthesis is growing among researchers. Nanotechnologies, due to their physicochemical and biological properties, have applications in diverse fields, including drug delivery, sensors, optoelectronics, and magnetic devices. This review focuses on the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using plant sources. Green synthesis of nanoparticles is an eco-friendly approach, which should be further explored for the potential of different plants to synthesize nanoparticles. The sizes of AgNPs are in the range of 1 to 100 nm. Characterization of synthesized nanoparticles is accomplished through UV spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. AgNPs have great potential to act as antimicrobial agents. The green synthesis of AgNPs can be efficiently applied for future engineering and medical concerns. Different types of cancers can be treated and/or controlled by phytonanotechnology. The present review provides a comprehensive survey of plant-mediated synthesis of AgNPs with specific focus on their applications, e.g., antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer activities.

Abstract:Transition metal nanoparticles (NPs) and their oxides have attracted considerable interest due to their fascinating and promising applications in biomedical, energy, environment, catalytic processes, etc. These NPs are generated using three approaches including physical, chemical, and biological to give them the right shape, size, and large surface area. However, there are concerns about energy consumption, cost, safety, and environmental problems with the physical and chemical approach. The biological approach is preferred in these years, because it is simple, cost effective and environmentally friendly. In this approach, numerous species of plants, microbes, algae, and fungi are used to synthesize NPs. Currently; the use of plant extracts is preferred for the synthesis of NPs, because it is a straightforward, low-cost, and one-pot process with a high reaction rate. The phytochemical compounds contained in the plant extract not only play a role as reducing and stabilizing agents in the synthesis process, but also enhance the therapeutic effects of the compounds. In this review article, the advances in the biosynthesis of NPs of transition metals and their oxides of nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), and manganese (Mn) using plant extracts are presented. In addition, the antibacterial, anticancer, and cytotoxic properties of the synthesized NPs for biomedical applications are discussed. Further, the antibacterial mechanism of the metal and metal oxide NPs is evaluated. Furthermore, application of these NPs in tissue engineering, advantages, and disadvantages are presented. Moreover, the size, morphology, and mechanism of the biosynthesized NPs using various plant parts and their applications are investigated. Finally, the challenges and future prospects related to green synthesis methods are discussed.

Abstract:Background: Nanotechnology plays a vital role in the field of medicine. Especially various nanoparticles such as silver, gold, platinum are involved in the treatment of different types of cancer. The effective nanoparticles were synthesized using techniques like chemical, physical, electrochemical and biological methods. In order to overcome the limitations existing in the synthesis of nanoparticles, researchers turned their attention toward the biological single step nanoparticle synthesis method by using plant and plant products. Objective: The objective of this study is to overcome the side effects encountered in the existing anti- cancer agents like nonspecificity and fast excretion, and plant-derived nanoparticles that are ecofriendly, cost-effective and biologically active could serve as a promising alternative. Conclusion: From the thorough literature review and recent patents, it is understood that the plantderived nanoparticles exhibited an excellent anti-proliferation anti-tumor activity towards different types of cancers without affecting the normal cells. Especially, the traditional chemotherapeutic drugs obtained from the plant source incorporated with the nanoparticles show remarkable results against anti cancer studies. The present review focused on some of the existing herbal plant derived nanoparticles, formulations and their potential application in cancer therapeutics.

Abstract:The biogenic production of plant-derived nanoparticles (NPs), with a spotlight on their potential as eco-friendly sustainable catalysts, is a major topic of study in the field of plant research, and their potential uses are recently being studied in nanocatalysis research. The biogenic synthesis of NPs from plants appears as a viable and effective strategy to create quick and efficient technologies and, yet, it has seldom been studied. Such NPs are well-suited for a range of biological applications because of their notable antioxidant, antibacterial, and antimicrobial activities. Some of these are also utilized as medications in healthcare, or their structural characteristics have served as a model for the synthesis of more potent synthetic pharmaceuticals. Increasing the synthesis of these secondary metabolites may be accomplished in various ways, one of which is by using nanoparticles that act as elicitors. Nevertheless, nanoparticles may offer various additional advantages for medicinal and aromatic plants, such as accelerated plant development, enhanced photosynthetic efficiency, and general performance, depending on the precise particle size, composition, concentration, and application method. Acknowledging these applications, the current review delved the updated information on exploring the medicinal plants used in NP synthesis. The suggested mechanisms of action of NPs on the modulation of plant secondary metabolism and biomedical applications are also discussed. Abstract:The alarming effect of antibiotic resistance prompted the search for alternative medicine to resolve the microbial resistance conflict. Over the last two decades, scientists have become increasingly interested in metallic nanoparticles to discover their new dimensions. Green nano synthesis is a rapidly expanding field of interest in nanotechnology due to its feasibility, low toxicity, eco‐friendly nature, and long‐term viability. Some plants have long been used in medicine because they contain a variety of bioactive compounds. Silver has long been known for its antibacterial properties. Silver nanoparticles have taken a special place among other metal nanoparticles. Silver nanotechnology has a big impact on medical applications like bio‐coating, novel antimicrobial agents, and drug delivery systems. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the pharmaceutical qualities of medicinal plants, as well as a convenient guideline for plant‐based silver nanoparticles and their antimicrobial activity.

Green synthesis of AgNPs has been progressively gaining acceptance due to its cost-effectiveness and energy-efficient nature. Objective: In the current study, aqueous extract of Thymus vulgaris ( T. vulgaris ) was used to synthesize the AgNPs using green synthesis techniques followed by checking the effectiveness and various biological activities of these AgNPs. Methods: At first, the plant samples were proceeded for extraction of aqueous extracts followed by chromatography studies to measure the phenolics and flavonoids. The synthesis and characterization of AgNPs were done using green synthesis techniques and were confirmed using Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) spectroscopy, UV–visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), zeta potential, zeta sizer and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. After confirmation of synthesized AgNPs, various biological activities were checked. Results: The chromatography analysis detected nine compounds accounting for 100% of the total amount of plant constituents. The FT-IR, UV–vis spectra, SEM, zeta potential, zeta sizer and XRD analysis confirmed the synthesis of AgNPs and the variety of chemical components present on the surface of synthesized AgNPs in the plant extract. The antioxidant activity of AgNPs showed 92% inhibition at the concentration of at 1000 μg/mL. A greater inhibitory effect in anti-diabetic analysis was observed with synthesized AgNPs as compared to the standard AgNPs. The hemolytic activity was low, but despite low concentrations of hemolysis activity, AgNPs proved not to be toxic or biocompatible. The anti-inflammatory activity of AgNPs was observed by in-vitro and in-vivo approaches in range at various concentrations, while maximum inhibition occurs at 1000 μg (77.31%). Conclusion: Our data showed that the potential biological activities of the bioactive constituents of T. vulgaris can be enhanced through green synthesis of AgNPs from T. vulgaris aqueous extracts. In addition, the current study depicted that AgNPs have good potential to cure different ailments as biogenic nano-medicine. Abstract:BackgroundSearch for options that can overcome microorganism's resistance to traditional drugs, has shifted the focus towards plant-based molecules and extracts. Latest developments in plant-based nanomaterials have further expanded the role of plant extracts since nano particle - plant extract combinations are shown to possess enhanced biological activity and reduced toxicity to human cells. In the present study, facile, one-pot synthesis of nearly monodispersed gold nanoparticles was developed using Clerodin enriched Clerodendrum infortunatum ethanolic leaf extract under ambient conditions. The synthesized gold nanoparticles were evaluated for broad spectrum anti-microbial activity as well as compatibility with human peripheral blood mononuclear cells.MethodsClerodin enriched fraction from C. infortunatum leaves ethanol extract was used to synthesize gold nanoparticle from chloroauric acid. Synthesized gold nanoparticles were characterized and tested for broad spectrum anti-microbial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa using the standard broth dilution method. Cytotoxicity of the gold nanoparticles was evaluated against human monocyte leukemic cells (THP-I) and healthy peripheral blood mononuclear cells. MTT and FACS based Annexin V/FITC-PI assays were used to study its cytotoxic effect.ResultsTEM analysis showed an average diameter of 33 ± 5 nm for the synthesized nanoparticles. EDX validated the presence of elemental Au (98.8%) and confirmed its nano form. Antimicrobial assay of gold nanoparticles showed significant inhibitory effect in all the tested pathogens. Additionally, MTT and Annexin-V/ PI assay demonstrated the cytotoxic activity of the nanoparticles against THP-I cells. Interestingly, nanoparticles did not show cytotoxicity against healthy human peripheral blood mononuclear cells.ConclusionGold nanoparticles generated in an eco-friendly process using Clerodin enriched fractions showed promising broad spectrum antibacterial activity. Simultaneously, they proved themselves to be benign against healthy human cells indicating potential therapeutic applications. Added benefit for the nanoparticles was, they had anti-proliferative effects against human leukemic monocyte cancer (THP-I) cells.

Abstract:This review covers general information about the eco-friendly process for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) and gold nanoparticles (AuNP) and focuses on mechanism of the antibacterial activity of AgNPs and the anticancer activity of AuNPs. Biomolecules in the plant extract are involved in reduction of metal ions to nanoparticle in a one-step and eco-friendly synthesis process. Natural plant extracts contain wide range of metabolites including carbohydrates, alkaloids, terpenoids, phenolic compounds, and enzymes. A variety of plant species and plant parts have been successfully extracted and utilized for AgNP and AuNP syntheses. Green-synthesized nanoparticles eliminate the need for a stabilizing and capping agent and show shape and size-dependent biological activities. Here, we describe some of the plant extracts involved in nanoparticle synthesis, characterization methods, and biological applications. Nanoparticles are important in the field of pharmaceuticals for their strong antibacterial and anticancer activity. Considering the importance and uniqueness of this concept, the synthesis, characterization, and application of AgNPs and AuNPs are discussed in this review.

Abstract:It has long been known that nerves stimulate growth and maintenance of skeletal muscles in ways not dependent on physical contacts, but numerous attempts to identify and characterize the myotrophic agent(s) secreted by nerves have been unsuccessful. We here suggest that products of the neuregulin gene may be these agents. The neuregulins are a family of proteins made by alternative splicing of a single transcript to give as many as 15 protein products. One member of this family, glial growth factor 2 (rhGGF2) is a very potent stimulator of myogenesis in L6A1 myoblasts, giving a maximal stimulation of cell fusion and creatine kinase elevation at a concentration of 1 ng/ml (18 pM). The stimulation of myogenesis is not rapid, but it is prolonged, continuing over a period of at least 6 days. The effects of rhGGF2 are additive with those of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) or its analog R3-IGF-I, suggesting that the actions of these two myotrophic agents differ in at least one rate-limiting step. We have observed one possible difference; unlike the IGFs, rhGGF2 does not induce elevation of the steady state level of myogenin mRNA.
