Abstract:Spin-phonon interactions are central to many interesting phenomena, ranging from superconductivity to magnetoelectric effects. Yet, they are believed to have a negligible influence on the structural behavior of most materials. For example, magnetic perovskite oxides often undergo structural transitions accompanied by magnetic signatures whose minuteness suggests that the underlying spin-phonon couplings are largely irrelevant. Here we present an exception to this rule, showing that novel effects can occur as a consequence. Our first-principles calculations reveal that spin-phonon interactions are essential to reproduce the experimental observations on the phase diagram of magnetoelectric multiferroic BiCoO$_{3}$. Moreover, we predict that, under compression, these couplings lead to an unprecedented temperature-driven double-reentrant sequence of ferroelectric transitions. We propose how to modify BiCoO$_{3}$ via chemical doping to reproduce such striking effects at ambient conditions, thereby yielding useful multifunctionality.

Abstract:Multifunctional properties in quantum systems require the interaction between different degrees of freedom. As such, spin-phonon coupling emerges as an ideal mechanism to tune multiferroicity, magnetism, and magnetoelectric response. In this letter, we demonstrate and explain, based on theoretical and experimental analyses, an unusual manifestation of spin-phonon coupling, i.e., prevention of a ferroelastic structural transition, and locking of high-temperature R-3m phase in a magnetically frustrated perovskite-like oxide Ba2NiTeO6. We present Ba2NiTeO6 as a prototype example among its family where long-range antiferromagnetic structure couples with a low-frequency Eg mode (at 55 cm-1) that exhibits a large anharmonicity. Our findings establish that spin-phonon coupling clearly suppresses the phonon anharmonicity preventing the structural phase transition from the R-3m to the C2/m phase in Ba2NiTeO6.

Abstract:Perovskite oxides offer tremendous potential for applications in information storage and energy conversion, owing to a subtle interplay between their spin, charge, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom. Here, we further expand the possible range of perovskite oxides operation towards the fields of thermal management and thermal computing by exploiting an exceptional synergy between different ferroic orders. We propose dynamical control of the heat flow in a distinctive family of perovskite oxides obtained via the application of small electric (~10 kV/cm) and/or magnetic (~1 T) fields. Based on first-principles simulations, we predict a relative heat conductivity variation of ~100% in SrMnO 3 thin films near room temperature resulting from a phase transition that involves huge changes in both the magnetization and electric polarization. The disclosed giant multiphononic effects are fundamentally caused by anharmonic spin-phonon couplings that strongly influence the mean lifetime of phonons.

Abstract:Recently, the perovskite BiCoO$_3$ has been shown experimentally to be isostructural with PbTiO$_3$, while simultaneously the $d^6$ Co$^{3+}$ ion has a high spin ground state with $C$-type antiferromagnetic ordering. Using hybrid density functional calculations, we investigate the atomic, electronic and magnetic structure of BiCoO$_3$ to elucidate the origin of the multiferroic state. To begin with, we perform a qualitative trend sudy of the role of $d$ electrons in affecting the tendency for perovskite materials to exhibit a ferroelectric distortion; this work initially explores a qualitative trend study in artificial cubic and tetragonal LaBO$_3$ perovskites. We choose La as the A-cation so as to remove the effects of Bi $6s$ hybridization. Through first-principles calculations of the LaBO$_3$ series, where B is a $d^0 - d^8$ cation from the $3d$-block, the trend study reveals that increasing the $d$ orbital occupation initially removes the tendency for a polar distortion, as expected. However, for high spin $d^5-d^7$ and $d^8$ cations a strong ferroelectric instability is recovered. We explained this effect in terms of the pseudo Jahn-Teller theory for ferroelectricity. It is shown that, in some cases, unpaired electron spins actually drive ferroelectricity, rather than inhibit it, which represents a shift in the understanding of how ferroelectricity and magnetism interact in perovskite oxides. It follows, that for the case of BiCoO$_3$, the Co$^{3+}$ ion plays a major role in the ferroelectric lattice instability. Importantly, the ferroelectric polarization is greatly enhanced when the Co$^{3+}$ ion is in the high spin state, when compared to the nonmagnetic, low spin state, and a large coupling of the electrical and magnetic polarization is present. Importantly, it is demonstrated that the ground spin state is switched by reducing the internal ferroelectric polarization.

Coupling of structure and magnetism to spin splitting in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites

Abstract:Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites are famous for the diversity of their chemical compositions, phases and phase transitions, and associated physical properties. We use a combination of experimental and computational techniques to reveal strong coupling between structure, magnetism, and spin splitting in a representative of the largest family of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites: the formates. With the help of first-principles simulations, we find spin splitting in both conduction and valence bands of [NH$_2$NH$_3$]Co(HCOO)$_3$, induced by spin-orbit interactions, which can reach up to 14~meV. Our magnetic measurements reveal that this material exhibits canted antiferromagnetism below 15.5 K. The direction of the associated antiferromagnetic order parameter is strongly coupled with the spin splitting already in the centrosymmetric phase, allowing for the creation and annihilation of spin splitting through the application of a magnetic field. Furthermore, the structural phase transition into experimentally observed polar Pna2$_1$ phase completely changes the aforementioned spin splitting and its coupling to magnetic degrees of freedom. This reveals that in [NH$_2$NH$_3$]Co(HCOO)$_3$, the structure and magnetism are strongly coupled to spin splitting in a way that allows for its manipulation through both magnetic and electric fields. As an example, for a given point inside the Brillouin zone of centrosymmetric Pnma phase of [NH$_2$NH$_3$]Co(HCOO)$_3$, spin splitting can be turned on/off by aligning the antiferromagnetic vector along certain crystallographic directions or through inducing a polar phase by the application of an electric field. We believe that our findings offer an important step toward fundamental understanding and practical applications of materials with coupled properties.

Abstract:Perovskite oxides form a fascinating class of materials because they possess many active degrees of freedom that result in a large variety of physical effects. One important structural parameter controlling the behavior of perovskites is the tilting of the oxygen octahedral. Among other properties, this tilting is coupled with the electric and magnetic orders, which leads to novel and potentially useful phenomena; recent examples include new mechanisms for improper and triggered ferroelectricity, rich phase diagrams, and novel chiral phases, counter-intuitive behaviors of ferroelectric and multiferroic films, and weak ferromagnetism in otherwise antiferromagnetic materials. Interestingly, most perovskites present the same tilted structures, which are few in number and fairly simple. In contrast, here we use different theoretical methods to show that a complete new family of stable phases, all displaying complex and nano-twinned tilting patterns (as well as other anomalous properties), exists in multiferroic BiFeO3 and related compounds.
Sawtooth lattice multiferroic BeCr$_2$O$_4$: Non-collinear magnetic structure and multiple magnetic transitions

Abstract:Noncollinear magnetic structures and multiple magnetic phase transitions in a sawtooth lattice antiferromagnet consisting of Cr$^{3+}$ are experimentally identified in this work, thereby proposing the scenario of magnetism-driven ferroelectricity in a sawtooth lattice. The title compound, BeCr$_2$O$_4$, displays three magnetic phase transitions at low temperatures, at $T_{N1}\approx$ 7.5 K, at $T_{N2}\approx$ 25 K and at $T_{N3}\approx$ 26 K, revealed through magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and neutron diffraction in this work. These magnetic phase transitions are found to be influenced by externally applied magnetic fields. Isothermal magnetization curves at low temperatures below the magnetic transitions indicate the antiferromagnetic nature of \bco\ with two spin-flop-like transitions occurring at $H_{c1}\approx$ 29 kOe and $H_{c2} \approx$ 47 kOe. Our high-resolution X-ray and neutron diffraction studies, performed on single crystal and powder samples unambiguously determined the crystal structure as orthorhombic $Pbnm$. By performing the magnetic superspace group analysis of the neutron diffraction data at low temperatures, the magnetic structure in the temperature range $T_{N3,N2} < T < T_{N1}$ is determined to be the polar magnetic space group, $P21nm.1^{\prime}(00g)0s0s$ with a cycloidal magnetic propagation vector $\textbf{k}_1$ = (0, 0, 0.090(1)). The magnetic structure in the newly identified phase below $T_{N1}$, is determined as $P21/b.1^{\prime}[b](00g)00s$ with the magnetic propagation vector $\textbf{k}_2$ = (0, 0, 0.908(1)). The cycloidal spin structure determined in our work is usually associated with electric polarization, thereby making \bco\ a promising multiferroic belonging to the sparsely populated family of sawtooth lattice antiferromagnets.

Abstract:Tailoring the reciprocity between the charge and spin degrees of freedom in perovskites is effective in designing and realizing novel spintronic functionalities. Recently, it has been proposed that this type of quantum correlation can be intensively engineered via structure modulation, such as introducing protons into SrCoO3 and SmNiO3. To this end, we describe a new structure-modulating strategy via F- substitution, e.g., the perovskite oxyfluoride, SrCoO2.9-delta F0.1, against hexagonal Sr2Co2O5. Co K-edge X-ray absorption spectra reveal that a large amount of oxygen vacancies and a desirable structural distortion are generated with the evolution of the hexagonal to cubic structure induced by F- substitution at a low dose. Distinctively, SrCoO2.9-delta F0.1 demonstrates a much enhanced magnetic transition temperature of up to 350 K and realizes a remarkable exchange bias effect (H-EB = 1745 Oe) at room temperature that is driven by the strong interplay among the structure, oxygen vacancies, and charge and spin degrees of freedom. This work describes a simple F- substitution approach to design and regulate spintronics, which leads to a complex correlation among the order parameters by modulating oxygen vacancies.
Giant spin-phonon-electronic coupling in a 5d oxide

Abstract:Enhanced coupling of material properties offers new fundamental insights and routes to multifunctional devices. In this context 5d oxides provide new paradigms of cooperative interactions driving novel emergent behavior. This is exemplified in 5d osmates that host a metal-insulator transition (MIT) driven by magnetic order. Here we consider the most robust case, the 5d perovskite NaOsO3, and reveal a giant coupling between spin and phonon through a frequency shift of {\Delta}{\omega}=40 cm-1, the largest measured in any material. We identify the dominant octahedral breathing mode and show isosymmetry with spin ordering which induces dynamic charge disproportionation that sheds new light on the MIT. The occurrence of the dramatic spin-phonon-electronic coupling in NaOsO3 is due to a property common to all 5d materials: the large spatial extent of the 5d ion. This allows magnetism to couple to phonons on an unprecedented scale and consequently offers multiple new routes to enhanced coupled phenomena.

Abstract:Abstract We present a theoretical study of the spin dynamics in perovskite-like multiferroics with homogeneous magnetic order in the presence of external magnetic and electric fields. A particular example of such material is BeFeO 3 in which the spin cycloid can be suppressed by application of external magnetic field, doping or by epitaxial strain. Understanding the effect of the external electric field on the spin-wave spectrum of these systems is required for devices based on spin wave interference and other innovative advances of magnonics and spintronics. Thus, we propose a model for BiFeO 3 in which the thermodynamic potential is expressed in terms of polarization \boldsymbol{P} , antiferrodistortion \boldsymbol{\Omega} , antiferromagnetic moment \boldsymbol{L} and magnetization \boldsymbol{M} . Based on this model, we derive the corresponding equations of motion and demonstrate the existence of electromagnons, that is, magnons that can be excited by electric fields. These excitations are closely related to the magnetoelectric effect and the dynamics of the antiferrodistortion \boldsymbol{\Omega} . Specifically, the influence of the external electric field on the magnon spectra is due to reorientation of both polarization \boldsymbol{P} and antiferrodistortion \boldsymbol{\Omega} under the influence of the electric field and is linked to emergence of a field-induced anisotropy.

Abstract:Double perovskites provide a unique opportunity to induce and control multiferroic behaviours in oxide systems. The appealing possibility to design materials with a strong coupling between the magnetization and the polarization fields may be achieved in this family since these magnetic insulators can present structural self-ordering in the appropriate growth conditions. We have studied the functional properties of La2CoMnO6 and Bi2CoMnO6 epitaxial thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition. Cation-ordered La2CoMnO6 films display a magnetic Curie temperature of 250K while cation-disordered Bi2CoMnO6 films present ferromagnetism up to ∼800K. Such high transition temperature for magnetic ordering can be further tuned by varying the strain in the films indicating an important contribution from the structural characteristics of the materials. Our approach might be generalized for other oxide systems. At this end, our results are compared with other multiferroic systems. The roles of various cations, their arrangements and structural effects are further discussed.

Tetragonal BaCoO$_3$: A Co$^{4+}$ Ferromagnetic Mott Insulator with Inverted Spin Crossover

Abstract:The interplay between crystal electric field splitting of d states and Hund's rule exchange energy in cobalt-based perovskites offers a promising avenue for inducing spin-state transitions. This study reports a new body-centered tetragonal (BCT) phase of BaCoO$_3$ (BCT-BaCoO$_3$), synthesized under high pressure (15 GPa) and high temperature (1200 °C) conditions. BCT-BaCoO$_3$ adopts a double perovskite structure of EuTiO$_3$-type (space group I4/mcm, #140), confirmed by high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals a rare Co$^{4+}$ valence state. Magnetization and X-ray absorption measurements reveal a low-spin to high-spin transition that takes place between 200 and 300 K. While spin crossovers are relatively common among common oxides, the one observed in BCT-BaCoO$_3$ is remarkable in that it proceeds in the opposite direction from conventional spin transitions. BCT-BaCoO$_3$ exhibits a low-spin (S = 1/2) state at high temperatures and transitions to a high-spin (S = 5/2) state at low temperatures. Within the high-spin state, hard ferromagnetic order onsets at T$_C$ = 107 K. Electrical resistivity indicates weak magnetoresistance and insulating behavior. Overall, BCT-BaCoO$_3$ presents an exceptional model for the exploration of spin-state transitions and the study of Co spin states in cobalt-based perovskites.

Multifunctional Antiperovskites driven by Strong Magnetostructural Coupling

Abstract:Based on density functional theory calculations, we elucidated the origin of multifunctional properties for cubic antiperovskites with noncollinear magnetic ground states, which can be attributed to strong isotropic and anisotropic magnetostructural coupling. 16 out of 54 stable magnetic antiperovskites M$_3$XZ (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni; X = selected elements from Li to Bi except for noble gases and 4f rare-earth metals; and Z = C and N) are found to exhibit the $\Gamma_{4g}$/$\Gamma_{5g}$ (i.e., characterized by irreducible representations) antiferromagnetic magnetic configurations driven by frustrated exchange coupling and strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Using the magnetic deformation as an effective proxy, the isotropic magnetostructural coupling is characterized, and it is observed that the paramagnetic state is critical to understand the experimentally observed negative thermal expansion and to predict the magnetocaloric performance. Moreover, the piezomagnetic and piezospintronic effects induced by biaxial strain are investigated. It is revealed that there is not a strong correlation between the induced magnetization and anomalous Hall conductivities by the imposed strain. Interestingly, the anomalous Hall/Nernst conductivities can be significantly tailored by the applied strain due to the fine-tuning of the Weyl points energies, leading to promising spintronic applications.

Upon the occurrence of the modulated phase transition around 130 K, the methylammonium molecules undergo a freezing of its reorientational motions which is concomitant with a change of the lattice parameters and anomalies of collective lattice vibrations. No significant change has been however observed in the lattice dynamics around the magnetic ordering, which therefore indicates the absence of a substantial magneto-electric coupling in zero-field.

Abstract:The magnetic-field-dependent spin ordering of strained BiFeO3 films is determined using nuclear resonant scattering and Raman spectroscopy. The critical field required to destroy the cycloidal modulation of the Fe spins is found to be significantly lower than in the bulk, with appealing implications for field-controlled spintronic and magnonic devices.

Abstract:Spin-induced ferroelectricity usually does not occur in perovskites with simple collinear magnetic structures. Here, we demonstrate that in even-layer perovskite systems, some common distortion modes involving octahedral rotation and Jahn-Teller distortion can break the inversion symmetry, allowing the emergence of spin-dependent out-of-plane polarization in a simple magnetic structure. Such spin-induced ferroelectricity is very common in double-perovskite systems and can coexist with ferromagnetism or ferrimagnetism above room temperature. We explain its origin by modifying the spin-dependent p-d hybridization mechanism. Our Letter provides a universal design for two-dimensional multiferroics and enables the control of polarization by means of a magnetic field.
Two Displacive Ferroelectric Phase Transitions in Multiferroic Quadruple Perovskite $BiMn_{7}O_{12}$

Abstract:We report on the microwave, terahertz (THz), infrared and Raman spectroscopic studies of $BiMn_{7}O_{12}$ ceramics, shedding more light into the nature of two structural phase transitions and their possible relation with ferroelectricity in this compound. We observed a softening of one polar phonon in the THz range on cooling towards 460 and 300 K, i.e., temperatures at which $BiMn_{7}O_{12}$ undergoes subsequent structural phase transitions from monoclinic $\textit{I2/m}$ to polar monoclinic $\textit{Im}$ and triclinic $\textit{P1}$ phases. The soft phonon causes dielectric anomalies typical for displacive ferroelectric phase transitions. Microwave measurements performed at 5.8 GHz up to 400 K qualitatively confirmed not only the dielectric anomaly at 300 K, but also revealed two other weak dielectric anomalies near the magnetic phase transitions at 60 K and 28 K. This evidences the multiferroic nature of the low-temperature phases, although the relatively high conductivity in the kHz and Hz spectral range prevented us from directly measuring the permittivity and ferroelectric polarization. Some Raman modes sense the magnetic phase transitions occurring near 60 and 25 K, showing that spin-phonon coupling is relevant in this compound and in this temperature range. The deviation of the Mn-O stretching mode frequency from the anharmonic temperature behavior was successfully explained by the spin correlation function calculated from the magnetic contribution to the specific heat.

Abstract:Topotactic phase transition obtains extensive research attention due to its associated rich physics as well as a promising potential application. Particularly, the oxygen incorporation into brownmillerite oxides leads to the structural transition into perovskite oxides with distinct magnetic and electronic properties. Using brownmillerite SrCoO2.5 (BM-SCO), two novel pathways are revealed to achieve the topotactic phase transition into its corresponding perovskite SrCoO3 (P-SCO). It is demonstrated that by using aqueous alkali as the electrolyte during gating, the negative biased voltage triggers a rapid transition into P-SCO, which is attributed to the presence of strong oxidizing hydroxyl radicals. While surprisingly, it is observed that the acid solution with rich protons can also trigger an unexpected phase transition from BM-SCO into P-SCO in a much faster manner. With density functional theory calculations, this transition is elucidated as a proton-assist ionic disproportionation, in which the Co ions are simultaneously oxidized and reduced, while the latter one is dissolved within the solution. These case studies not only achieve a deep understanding of the structural phase transition in BM-SCO but also shed new light on the topotactic phase transition of complex oxides.
