Abstract:BACKGROUND: Neurosurgery is a specialty that has been dominated by males. Although there has been an increase in the number of women in the field, it is not yet close to being equal. Some noteworthy women who have carved the path for other women to follow in their footsteps include Drs. Sofía Ionescu and Diana Beck, the first and second female neurosurgeons worldwide, respectively. However, there are limited publications on Dr. María Cristina García-Sancho, the first Latina neurosurgeon.METHODS: The purpose of this review was to illuminate the neurosurgical community on the life of Dr. García-Sancho. A thorough literature was performed on medical and non-medical publications that were either authored by Dr. García-Sancho or mentioned her directly.RESULTS: Dr. García-Sancho earned her medical degree at the School of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico under the guidance of Dr. Clemente Robles, who founded Mexico's first neurosurgical department. Her training took her worldwide.CONCLUSIONS: Her expertise allowed her to pioneer a revolutionary advancement known as the one-step bilateral cordotomy. Her perseverance led her to becoming the head of the Department of Neurosurgery at the National Cancer Institute of Mexico and co-found the Mexican Society of Neurological Surgery, where she served on the board of directors. This review aims to advocate for an equitable environment in the field of neurosurgery with Dr. García-Sancho's story.

Abstract:Despite the rising percentage of women accessing the medical profession over the last few decades, surgical specialties are still largely male-dominated; in particular, a remarkable gender disparity is evident in neurosurgery, where only 19% of practitioners are females. Although women may be reluctant to choose a challenging specialty like neurosurgery due to concerns around how to balance family and career, it must be admitted that prejudices against female neurosurgeons have been deeply rooted for long, prompting many to give up and switch track to less demanding subspecialties. Among those who have persisted, many, if not most, have experienced difficulties in career progression and received unequal treatment in comparison with their male counterparts. In 1989, a group of 8 female neurosurgeons founded Women in Neurosurgery (WINS), an organization that aimed to guarantee inclusivity in neurosurgery, encouraging a better and more egalitarian working environment. Thereafter, WINS sessions were regularly promoted at international conferences, offering female neurosurgeons a platform to report issues related to gender discrimination. Over recent years, the mission of WINS sessions in national and international conferences has taken an unexpected deviation; they have progressively become supplementary scientific sessions with only women neurosurgeons as speakers, thus paving the road to a form of self-segregation. This tendency has also resulted in the establishment of sections of only female neurosurgeons within some national societies. Although there remains a faction that fiercely supports the WINS mindset of reserved spaces for women, such segregation is an upsetting prospect for those who believe that science and professionalism have no gender; a growing part of the global neurosurgical community believes that the conception of a “female neurosurgery” and a “male neurosurgery” is misguided and counterproductive and consider the existence of the WINS as anachronistic and no longer necessary.

Abstract:Background: Sporadic women involvement in surgery has been recorded since ancient times. Nevertheless, the presence of women in surgical disciplines has been marginal until the last 2 decades, with several barriers still existing worldwide. The aim of the study was to explore the history of women in surgery, with a main focus in North America from until the foundation women surgical societies. Methods: Database search of studies about the history of women in surgery. Results: The 19th century registered an increased presence of women in medicine; during the 20th century, pioneer women surgeons opened the way to a more consistent involvement of women in surgical specialties. In the last 20 years, increased awareness of barriers limiting women progression in surgical career led to the development of women's surgical societies, with the aim to share common experiences and find solutions to common issues. Conclusion: The history of women in surgery has been paved with challenges: during the last centuries, several barriers limited the inclusion of women in surgical fields, from training to leadership positions. Nevertheless, some pioneers actually broke the rules imposed by a male-dominated field and opened the way to a more diverse and equal future for women surgeons. Nowadays, the existence of women's surgical societies in different countries and their interconnection represents a way to support women surgeons at different stages of their career.

The Only Constant is Change: A Longitudinal Analysis of Women's Representation Across American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) Committee Leadership

Abstract:Background: Women have historically been underrepresented in surgical leadership and in specialty organizations. This study longitudinally examines representation of women across committee leadership within the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA). Methods: Annual APSA committee chair and vice-chair rosters (2003-2023) were obtained. If not self-reported in the membership roster, gender was classified based upon review of publicly available data. Proportions of women who served as chairs and vice-chairs were quantified by committee and by year. Results: Overall, the proportion of women serving as APSA committee chairs and vice-chairs increased from 11% to 48% during the study period (p = 0.001). In examining each position, the proportion of women chairs increased from 12% to 40% (p = 0.042), while women vice-chairs increased from 10% to 58% (p = 0.009). The committees with the highest cumulative proportion of women chairs were Benjy Brooks (100%), Diversity Equity & Inclusion (100%), Finance (100%), Global Pediatric Surgery (67%), and Wellness (67%). Four committees- Trauma, Access to Surgery for Kids, Practice, and Professional Development - were not led by a woman chair in the entire study period. Additionally, five committees that traditionally have had significant impact on organizational workflow and agendas all had cumulative proportions of women chairs of less than 50% - Education (33%), Publications (28.6%), Outcomes (19%), Surgical Quality & Safety (18.8%) and Program (9.5%). Conclusion: These results demonstrate encouraging trends in the gender diversity of APSA leadership. However, this progress does not appear to be evenly distributed; leadership of key committees continues to lack substantial women's representation. Level of evidence: III.

Abstract:A collaborative global working group of women neurosurgeons in multiple countries at different stages of their neurosurgical careers undertook the task of researching the history of European women in neurosurgery. While doing so, we happened upon many remarkable female neurosurgeons who overcame great adversity, made tremendous contributions to society and institutional neurosurgery, and displayed numerous talents beyond the operating room. In the first part of this paper, we recounted a chronology of female neurosurgeons in Europe, highlighting the most remarkable achievements of women in every decade, from the 1920's to 2020. In this paper, we honor fascinating women in European neurosurgery, both historical characters and living legends. These women have overcome great adversity and have also excelled in a huge variety of pursuits. While some were themselves refugees, we also have uncovered noteworthy examples of women who immersed themselves in humanitarian missions and who tried to better the world through political action. There are stories of women beating the odds, taking on biased institutions and proving their worth, in spite of the prevailing system. Most inspirational, we have discovered through our comprehensive research on the history of women in European neurosurgery that the future is increasingly female.

Abstract:Since 2018, a neurosurgery delegation has been actively engaged and consistently present at the World Health Assembly. Recognizing the growing impact of neurosurgical diseases, the neurosurgery delegation participated in the 76th World Health Assembly in May 2023, advocating for timely, safe, and affordable global neurosurgical care. The delegation focused on forging new collaborations, strengthening the World Health Organization-World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies official relations, and actively supporting resolutions that impact the neurosurgical patients. However, there is a long advocacy journey ahead to address unmet neurosurgical needs. Patient-centered advocacy is an inherent task of our profession and the essence of the Global Neurosurgery Bogota Declaration of 2016. The highlight of the 76th World Health Assembly was the adoption of the first neurosurgery-driven resolution calling for micronutrient fortification to prevent spina bifida and other micronutrient deficiencies. For the last 4 years, the Global Alliance for Prevention of Spina Bifida, a group spearheaded by neurosurgeons, advocated for spina bifida prevention. This Alliance collaborated with many stakeholders, notably, the Colombian government to promote the resolution: "Accelerating efforts for preventing micronutrient deficiencies and their consequences, including spina bifida and other neural tube defects, through safe and effective food fortification." This is a proud milestone for the neurosurgical profession. There are many strategies available for neurosurgeons, when working together with elected leaders, other stakeholders, and allied professionals, to implement initiatives that can prevent future cases of spina bifida and other neurological disorders and reduce the burden of neurosurgical disease.

Abstract:The Middle East is known for its complex history and rich environment and culture. The region is home to a wide variety of traditions, cultures and religions, which have made the area vulnerable to political conflicts. Despite these difficulties, science and medicine have always thrived in the region, with many medical practices and principles established by physicians and scholars living in the Middle East. The first academic neurosurgical activity in the region started in the 1950s. The first women neurosurgeons in the Middle East started training in the 1970s, and were from Iran, Palestine, followed by Saudi Arabia in the 1970s. These pioneers have encountered serious challenges, yet have become role models for the next generation. These women have paved the way and facilitated neurosurgical training and practice for more women surgeons. The gradual increase in the number of women neurosurgical residents in the region leads to the expectation that women will play a more prominent role in the future as leaders in neurosurgery in the Middle East. This collaborative study, which identifies the known women neurosurgeons in the Middle East for the first time, may serve to provide background and context for further contributions of women neurosurgeons for our profession and our patients.

Abstract:Professor Liesl Zühlke is the focus of our fifth in a series of interviews in Cardiology in the Young entitled, "Global Leadership in Paediatric and Congenital Cardiac Care". Professor Zühlke (nee Hendricks) was born in Cape Town, South Africa. She would attend medical school in her hometown at University of Cape Town, graduating in 1991. Professor Zühlke then went on to complete a Diploma in Child Health at College of Medicine in Cape Town followed by completion of her Paediatric and Paediatric Cardiology training in 1999 and 2007, respectively. She would subsequently complete her Masters of Public Health (Clinical Research Methods) at the University of Cape Town, completing her dissertation in 2011 on computer-assisted auscultation as a screening tool for cardiovascular disease, under the supervision of Professors Landon Myer and Bongani Mayosi.Professor Zühlke began her clinical position as a paediatric cardiologist in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa in 2007. In this role, she has been instrumental in developing a transitional clinic at the paediatric hospital, is a team member of the combined cardio-obstetric and grown-up congenital heart disease clinics, each of which are rare in South Africa, with very few similar clinics in Africa. Professor Zühlke would continue her research training, completing her Doctorate at the University of Cape Town in 2015, with her dissertation on the outcomes of asymptomatic and symptomatic rheumatic heart disease under the supervision of Professor Bongani Mayosi and Associate Professor Mark Engel. In 2015, in affiliation with the University of Cape Town and the Department of Paediatrics and the Institute of Child Health, she established The Children's Heart Disease Research Unit, with the goals to conduct, promote and support paediatric cardiac research on the African continent, facilitate Implementation Science and provide postgraduate supervision and training in paediatric cardiac research. In 2018, she would subsequently complete her Master of Science at the London School of Economics in Health Economics, Outcomes and Management of cardiovascular sciences. Professor Zühlke currently serves as the acting Deputy-Dean of Research at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Cape Town.Professor Zühlke has achieved the highest leadership positions within cardiology in South Africa, including President of the Paediatric Cardiac Society of South Africa and President of the South African Heart Association. She is internationally regarded as a leader in research related to rheumatic heart disease. Professor Zühlke's work includes patient, family and health advocacy on a global scale, being involved in the development of policies that have been adopted by major global organisations such as the World Health Organization. In addition to her clinical and research efforts, she is highly regarded by students, colleagues and graduates as an effective teacher, mentor and advisor. This article presents our interview with Professor Zühlke, an interview that covers her experience as a thought leader in the field of Paediatric Cardiology, specifically in her work related to rheumatic heart disease, Global Health and paediatric and congenital cardiac care in resource-limited settings.

Abstract:The authors present a historical analysis of the first neurosurgical service in Texas. Initially established as a subdivision within the Department of Surgery in the early 1900s, this service eventually evolved into the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). The pivotal contributions of individual chiefs of neurosurgery throughout the years are highlighted, emphasizing their roles in shaping the growth of the neurosurgery division. The challenges faced by the neurosurgical division are documented, with particular attention given to the impact of hurricanes on Galveston Island, Texas, which significantly disrupted hospital operations. Additionally, a detailed account of recent clinical and research expansions is presented, along with the future directions envisioned for the Department of Neurosurgery. This work offers a comprehensive historical narrative of the neurosurgical service at UTMB, chronicling its journey of growth and innovation, and underscoring its profound contributions to Galveston’s healthcare services, extending its impact beyond the local community.

Abstract:Background Latin American countries are improving childhood cancer care, showing strong commitment to implement the Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer, but there are scant publications of the situation at a continental level. Methods As part of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology Global Mapping project, delegates of each country participating in the Latin American Society of Pediatric Oncology (SLAOP) and chairs of national pediatric oncology societies and cooperative groups were invited to provide information regarding availability of national pediatric cancer control programs (NPCCP), pediatric oncology laws, pediatric oncology tumor registries, and training programs and support to diagnosis and treatment. Results Nineteen of the 20 countries participating in SLAOP responded. National delegates reported nine countries with NPCCP and four of them were launched in the past 5 years. National pediatric tumor registries are available in eight countries, and three provided published survival results. Fellowship programs for training pediatric oncologists are available in 12 countries. National delegates reported that eight countries provide support to most essential diagnosis and treatments and 11 provide partial or minimal support that is supplemented by civil society organizations. Seven countries have a pediatric oncology law. There are three international cooperative groups and four national societies for pediatric oncology. Conclusion Despite many challenges, there were dramatic advances in survivorship, access to treatment, and availability of NPCCP in Latin America. Countries with highest social development scores in general provide more complete support and are more likely to have NPCCP, training programs, and reported survival results.

The humanitarian aid of neurosurgical missions in Peru: A chronicle and future perspectives

Abstract:Background: The unmet neurosurgical need has remained patent in developing countries, including Peru. However, continuous efforts to overcome the lack of affordable care have been achieved, being neurosurgical missions one of the main strategies. We chronicle the humanitarian labor of organizations from high-income countries during their visit to Peru, the contributions to local trainees' education, and the treatment of underserved patients. Furthermore, we discuss the embedded challenges from these missions and the future perspective on long-term partnerships and sustainability. Methods: This is a narrative review. We searched the literature in PubMed and Google Scholar about neurosurgical missions conducted in Peru. Results: Since 1962, twelve organizations from high-income countries have delivered humanitarian help in Peru by training local neurosurgeons, treating low-income patients, and providing surgical instrumentation. Out of the three main regions of Peru, cities on the coast and highlands have hosted most of these missions, with no reported outreach in the amazon area. About 75% of the organizations are headquartered in the United States, followed by Canada, Luxembourg, and Spain. In addition, 50% of the organizations have an active partnership. The predominant focus of these missions has been pediatrics, neuro-oncology, and spine surgery. Conclusion: Neurosurgical missions have represented a strategy to close the disparity in education and treatment in Peru. However, additional efforts must be conducted to improve long-term partnership and sustainability, such as adopting standardized indicators for progress tracking, incorporating remote technologies for continuous training and communication, and expanding partnerships in less attended areas.
Mapping the landscape of pediatric neurosurgery: geography, gender, and trends over time

Abstract:Objective: Recently there has been an increase in pediatric neurosurgical fellowship graduates. It is important to understand the current pediatric neurosurgical workforce to help with prospective strategic workforce planning. The authors sought to determine 1) the geographic distribution and regional retention after training and 2) academic and leadership metrics by geographic location, era of training, and gender for practicing pediatric neurosurgeons in the United States. Methods: Current practicing pediatric neurosurgeons were identified through American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery (ABPNS) certification status and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons directory. NIH RePORTER, Web of Science, and departmental and hospital networking websites were used to collect data on demographics, training, leadership, NIH involvement, and academic metrics. Results: A total of 298 ABPNS-certified pediatric neurosurgeons were identified as currently practicing in the United States. Of these pediatric neurosurgeons, 26.2% were women, 74.5% were academic, and 11.7% have received current or past NIH funding. There were significant differences in the concentration of pediatric neurosurgeons per general population based on region. A total of 117 (39.3%) pediatric neurosurgeons held leadership positions; 4 (1.3%) served as neurosurgery department chairs, 67 (22.5%) served as chief of pediatric neurosurgery (9 of whom were women), 12 (4.0%) served as residency program directors, and 32 (10.7%) served as pediatric fellowship directors. Women were more likely to currently practice in the same region in which they trained for medical school (p = 0.050), have a lower academic rank (p = 0.004), and have a lower h-index (p < 0.001). Pediatric neurosurgeons practicing in the Northeast were more likely to have completed residency (p = 0.022) and medical school (p = 0.002) in the same region as their current practice. Conclusions: There are differences in the concentration of pediatric neurosurgeons based on region. In pediatric neurosurgery, women hold fewer leadership positions, have lower academic ranks, and are less academically impactful as measured by the h-index. As the demand for pediatric neurosurgeons evolves, thoughtful monitoring of the distribution and composition of the neurosurgical workforce can help ensure equitable access to care across the country.

Abstract:Message from the ISCPES President: Prof Dr Rosa López de D’Amico It gives me great pleasure to present the inaugural issue of the International Sports Studies (ISS) publication as a fully open-access journal starting in 2024. The journal has come a long way since its first distribution in 1979. Together with this significant development, we welcome Prof. Dr Richard Bailey, who joins as co-editor of the ISS. Prof. Richard Peter Bailey, FRSA, is Deputy Dean, Head of Research, and Full Professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Liberal Arts at UCSI University in Malaysia. He is also Deputy Director of the Center of Research for Mental Health and Wellbeing in Kuala Lumpur. Additionally, he is listed among Stanford University’s top scientists in the world for Clinical Medicine, Sport Sciences, and Education. Allow me to thank you for accepting the challenge of joining our Chief Editor, Dr Maria Luisa Guinto, in this new phase of the ISS journal. Welcome to the team! Scholarly publishing is a challenging path, but we hope that by working together, we can continue providing a suitable platform for scholars worldwide to publish their work in Physical Education and sports. My gratitude extends to those supporting the editorial team, from among the previous and new team members, particularly Dr Klaudia Rafael, who remains the ISS Associate Editor. Another important piece of news is the agreement with the Routledge publishing house regarding approval of the continued publication of the ISCPES Book Series. The series was actively circulated between 1999 and 2003, yet the books are still in demand. With this agreement, the book series will continue with new titles, aiming to systematically extend knowledge of relevant issues, themes, and topics. The over-riding aim is to facilitate more profound awareness and understanding of physical education and sport across various socio-cultural, geographical, political, and thematic contexts. Each volume will focus on a thematic issue in different national or regional political entity settings. Each text can be used separately or to form an integrated basis for informed comparisons of thematic topics. This initiative contributes to critical awareness and analysis amongst confirmed and potential comparativists and young scholars at under- and post-graduate levels. Concomitantly, they will provide authentic materials for critical comparisons and test the generality of statements about common development patterns and issues in sport and physical education across different cultures. Another essential and distinctive feature of the book series is positioning the discourse on the problems and themes from a genuinely international perspective. As such, we can go beyond traditional mainstream literature and expand the knowledge generation to include local academics, incorporating underrepresented voices, expanding potential readership, and providing a sound and informed basis for critical comparative, transnational, and cross-cultural understanding. Two projects have already been approved for publication, one in late 2024 and the other in 2025. Dr Walter Ho leads the first one, Quality Physical Education (QPE) and Global Practice. Dr Usha Nair heads the second one, Physical Education in India: Exploring Tradition, Development, and Contemporary Perspectives. We look forward to these publications as we continue to work on various research projects for future publications. I wish to echo the Society on the call of expression for bidding to the 23rd Biennial ISCPES congress that will take place in late 2025. For more details, please contact any of our board members. Finally, I invite you to submit your papers to the ISS journal. Let’s spread the word about the continuous work of volunteers who dedicate their efforts to providing a quality publication for scholars in physical education and sport. The role of International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) in advancing global childhood cancer care

Abstract:The Société Internationale d'Oncologie Pédiatrique [International Society of Paediatric Oncology] (SIOP), founded in 1969, aims to improve the lives of children and adolescents with cancer through global collaboration, education, training, research and advocacy. The annual congress provides the opportunity to share late-breaking research, clinical experiences and debate, with experts worldwide. SIOP's six Continental Branches represent their constituent members in North America, Oceania, Latin America, Africa, Europe and Asia and bring best practices and recent research findings of value to their specific patient populations. In 1990, the SIOP Board of Directors addressed the formerly predominantly European/North American society transforming into a global association by establishing a scholarship program to bring low- and middle-income country (LMIC) paediatric oncologists and nurses to SIOP meetings. A major achievement was SIOP's acceptance as a World Health Organisation (WHO) non-state actor in official relations in 2018, joining 220 non-governmental organisations, international business associations and philanthropic foundations with this privilege. SIOP supports advocacy with WHO member states and civil society to highlight the specific needs of cancer in this age-group through key programs especially supporting the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer. Sustained improvement in childhood cancer outcomes has paralleled the integration of research with care; thus, SIOP launched a Programme for Advancing Research Capacity for funding selected clinical trial groups in LMICs. SIOP supports south-south partnerships, and the principles elegantly expressed in SIOP Africa's checklist for co-branding projects, that include the prioritisation of local needs, cultivation of local expertise and commitment to equitable partnerships. SIOP now counts approximately 3,000 members from over 128 countries; 39% are from more than 60 LMICs. SIOP members have multidisciplinary expertise on all aspects of childhood cancer care working in collaboration with key stakeholders including governments, civil society organisations and funders to improve the lives of children/adolescents with cancer everywhere in all ways.

Abstract:Promoting the involvement of women in surgery, particularly in neurosurgery, is crucial in today's male-dominated landscape. Without proper recognition and encouragement, many talented and pioneering women may continue to be undervalued, despite their significant impact on the field. Gender inequality has been a persistent issue throughout history, with limited progress despite the increasing presence of women in the workforce. Historically, women were viewed as inferior to men, even within the medical profession, due to perceived physical differences. This perception was reinforced in religious texts, depicting women as bearing the consequences of the first woman's actions. However, it is important to recognize and support these talented women, allowing them to showcase their contributions in their respective fields. One notable figure in this regard is Maria Karampouga, the first female neurosurgeon graduate in Cyprus. Born in Alexandroupolis, Greece, Maria Karampouga began her medical training after passing a national examination and achieving excellence. After successfully completing her studies, attaining the top score in her graduating class she began a residency in general surgery and then neurosurgery in Greece. Seeking the best possible training, she left her studies incomplete and moved to Cyprus to restart her training in Neurosurgery. She was the first woman ever associated with Neurosurgery in Cyprus and in June 2023, she became the first woman to complete the country's residency program in Neurosurgery. Currently, she is a researcher at University of Pittsburg, Medical Center.

Pediatric anesthesiology in Brazil, Chile, and Mexico

Abstract:Background: Latin America comprises an extensive and diverse territory composed of 33 countries in the Caribbean, Central, and South America where Romance languages-languages derived from Latin are predominantly spoken. Economic disparities exist, with inequitable access to pediatric surgical care. The Latin American Surgical Outcomes Study in Pediatrics (LASOS-Peds), a multi-national collaboration, will determine safety of pediatric anesthesia and perioperative care. Objective: Below, we provide a descriptive initiative to share how pediatric anesthesia in Brazil, Chile, and Mexico operate. Theses descriptions do not represent all of Latin America. Descriptions and conclusions: Brazil an upper middle-income country, population 203 million, has a public system insufficiently resourced and a private system, resulting in inequitable safety and accessibility. Surgical complications constitute the third leading cause of mortality. Anesthesiology residency is 3 years, with required rotations in pediatric anesthesia; five hospitals offer pediatric anesthesia fellowships. Anesthesiology is a physician-only practice. A Pediatric Anesthesia Committee within the Brazilian Society of Anesthesiology offers education through seasonal courses and workshops including pediatric advanced life support. Chile is a high-income country, population 19.5 million, the majority cared for in the public system, the remainder in university, private, or military systems. Government efforts have gradually corrected the long-standing anesthesiology shortage: twenty 3-year residency programs prepare graduates for routine pediatric cases. The Chilean Society of Anesthesiology runs a 1-month program for general anesthesiologists to enhance pediatric anesthesia skills. Pediatric anesthesia fellowship training occurs in Europe, USA, and Australia, or in two 2-year Chilean university programs. Public health policies have increased the medical and surgical pediatric specialists and general anesthesiologists, but not pediatric anesthesiologists, which creates safety concerns for neonates, infants, and medically complex. Chile needs more pediatric anesthesia fellowship programs. Mexico, an upper middle-income country, with a population of about 126 million, has a five-sector healthcare system: public, social security for union workers, state for public employees, armed forces for the military, and a private "self-pay." There are inequities in safety and accessibility for children. Pediatric Anesthesiology fellowship is 2 years, after 3 years residency. A shortage of pediatric anesthesiologists limits accessibility and safety for surgical care, driven by added training at low salary and hospital under appreciation. The Mexican Society of Pediatric Anesthesiology conducts refresher courses, workshops, and case conferences. Insufficient resources and culture limits research.

Abstract:Various well-known people associated with the history of the presidency of the United States have experienced neurologic disease or injury, especially trauma to the head or spine. Nancy Reagan, however, as the wife of President Ronald Reagan and First Lady, would leave a significant and lasting mark on the progress of neurosurgical science and education. Recognized for endeavors against drug abuse, Alzheimer disease, and polio, her interest in neurosurgical research is less well known. Nancy's father Loyal Davis was a remarkable neurosurgeon and educator of extraordinary influence. When Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) founder John Green experienced complications after an illness, Davis served as BNI director during 1966 - 1967. After Davis's death in 1982, Robert Spetzler, who had been a student of Davis at Northwestern University Medical School and was then BNI director, convinced Green, despite his misgivings, to support a neurosurgical laboratory recognizing Davis. In 1988, Nancy Reagan, then First Lady, dedicated the Loyal and Edith Davis Neurosurgical Research Laboratory. At the dedication, she remarked on her years growing up in the home of a pioneering neurosurgeon and remarked that "my father believed deeply in the importance of research to develop new methods for treating patients." Green and Spetzler's unified efforts honored the extraordinary career of Davis in a manner he would have appreciated, were supported by a First Lady with deep involvement in politics and philanthropy dedicated to promoting advances in medicine, and are part of neurosurgery's unique heritage.
Women neurologist: a worldwide and Brazilian struggle

Abstract:The main aim of this paper was to present some pioneer women neurologist, their struggle to pursue their career and the barriers mainly encountered at the beginning of their professional lives. It was also presented the progressive increasing of the feminine participation in medicine and in the neurology with study based on data of the School of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and Brazilian Academy of Neurology. Their composition were analyzed according to gender, class and academic rank. In spite of this feminization, there is lack of a women's parallel advancement into leadership positions despite no visible barriers ("glass ceiling").

Abstract:There have been tremendous strides over the past decade to institute strong policy as means to facilitate alignment on goals and strategies for global neurosurgical systems strengthening. In this chapter, we highlight key historic policy milestones in the global neurosurgery movement. We discuss the role of international organizations in neurosurgery, and the incorporation of neurosurgery into global health agendas. We then delve into specific examples of policies that have been established (such as comprehensive recommendations for neurotrauma, spina bifida, and hydrocephalus), highlight the role of international organizations in shaping neurosurgical policies, emphasize the importance of advocacy, and explore future directions.
