Abstract:The interdecadal change in the relationship between the winter mean surface air temperature (SAT) over East Asia (EA) and the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is investigated using both observational data and a simple general circulation model. The positive phase of the first empirical orthogonal function (EOF) of SAT over EA is characterized by significant warming over midlatitude to high-latitude EA and is linked to the Arctic Oscillation. The second EOF (SAT-EOF2) is represented by significant cooling extending from 55 degrees N to the tropics and abnormal warming over high-latitude EA. Focus is given to SAT-EOF2 which has a close relationship with the La Nina-type sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies. A clear shift in SAT-EOF2 is observed in the mid-1980s. The relationships between SAT-EOF2 and ENSO in two subperiods, i.e., 1957 to 1982 (P1) and 1986 to 2010 (P2), are discussed and compared. Results show that the relationship between SAT-EOF2 and ENSO significantly strengthens after the mid-1980s due to stronger SST and precipitation anomalies in P2 than in P1 associated with ENSO in the tropical western Pacific. In the midlatitudes, the Pacific-North American teleconnection pattern is more closely related to ENSO in P2, whereas in P1, the ENSO-related atmospheric circulation anomalies are more similar to a zonally orientated teleconnection pattern. Numerical experiments suggest that the difference in the ENSO-related circulation anomaly in the midlatitudes is likely related to the difference in the climatological mean flows of these two subperiods.

Abstract:The impact of northern high-latitude volcanic (NHV) eruptions on El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is investigated based on ensemble simulations with the Community Earth System Model. The seasonality of the atmospheric circulation influences the NHV aerosol dispersion, causing stronger (weaker) Northern Hemisphere cooling after the January and April (July and October) eruptions. ENSO's response is found to be more dependent on NHV eruption seasons than that on tropical eruption seasons. The January eruption causes an El Nino in an eruption year [year (0) hereafter] while an El Nino occurs in year (1) after the October eruption. No significant El Nino occurs after the April (July) eruption. A diagnostic analysis reveals that these El Ninos' developments are attributed to the positive zonal, meridional advective, and thermocline feedbacks, triggered by the western Pacific westerly anomalies. The anomalous North Pacific cyclone (NPC) and Asian monsoon are key systems to excite anomalous westerlies, which are caused by the NHV-induced midlatitude cooling and Eurasian continent-North Pacific thermal contrast. After the January eruption, the anomalous NPC develops in early summer and connects with a weakened Asian summer monsoon, which excites anomalous westerlies over the Indo-western Pacific, activating the Bjerknes feedback. For the October eruption, the anomalous NPC and enhanced East Asian winter monsoon bring cold air to the Maritime Continent and warm the subtropical central North Pacific through surface heat flux exchange, exciting the westerly anomalies. These results suggest that the strong dependence on the seasonal timing of NHV should be a critical element of data-model comparisons.
Weak El Niño and Winter Climate in the Mid- to High Latitudes of Eurasia

Abstract:According to the sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) intensity in the Nino-3.4 region and the east-west gradient across the Pacific, three types of El Nino are identified in this work. An event with larger than average intensity is defined as a strong El Nino, all others are considered to be weak events. Almost all strong El Ninos are concurrent with a large gradient, which is featured by negative SSTAs in the western Pacific and positive SSTAs in the equatorial eastern Pacific (EP) and Indian Ocean (IO). According to the east-west gradient, the weak events can be subdivided into gradient-weak (GW) El Nino and equatorial-weak (EW) El Nino. The GW El Nino characterizes a great east-west gradient without a significant IO SSTA. In contrast, the EW event features a positive SSTA over the tropical IO and EP. The impact of GW El Nino on the North Atlantic-Eurasia continent (NA-Eurasia) displays a negative North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)-like atmospheric anomaly, resulting in a drier and cooler-than-normal winter over Eurasia. Observational and numerical evidence indicate that the prolonged subtropical jet from the North Pacific to NA acts as a waveguide that captures the planetary Rossby waves generated by the GW El Nino. This waveguide favors the propagation of the perturbations into the downstream regions, which would affect the NA-Eurasian climate. However, the EW El Nino is accompanied by a relatively weak subtropical jet that cannot impact the NA-Eurasian climate significantly. For the strong El Nino, the absence of the NAO signal can be attributed to the counteracting of the teleconnections triggered by the Pacific and the tropical IO.
The Strong El Niño of 2015/16 and Its Dominant Impacts on Global and China's Climate

Abstract:The oceanic and atmospheric conditions and the related climate impacts of the 2015/16 ENSO cycle were analyzed, based on the latest global climate observational data, especially that of China. The results show that this strong El Niño event fully established in spring 2015 and has been rapidly developing into one of the three strongest El Niño episodes in recorded history. Meanwhile, it is also expected to be the longest event recorded, attributable to the stable maintenance of the abnormally warm conditions in the equatorial Pacific Ocean since spring 2014. Owing to the impacts of this strong event, along with climate warming background, the global surface temperature and the surface air temperature over Chinese mainland reached record highs in 2015. Disastrous weather in various places worldwide have occurred in association with this severe El Niño episode, and summer precipitation has reduced significantly in North China, especially over the bend of the Yellow River, central Inner Mongolia, and the coastal areas surrounding Bohai Bay. Serious drought has occurred in some of the above areas. The El Niño episode reached its peak strength during November-December 2015, when a lower-troposphere anomalous anticyclonic circulation prevailed over the Philippines, bringing about abnormal southerlies and substantially increased precipitation in southeastern China. At the same time, a negative phase of the Eurasia-Pacific teleconnection pattern dominated over the mid-high latitudes, which suppressed northerly winds in North China. These two factors together resulted in high concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and frequent haze weather in this region. Currently, this strong El Niño is weakening very rapidly, but its impact on climate will continue in the coming months in some regions, especially in China.
The diverse impacts of El Niño on northeastern Canada and Greenland surface air temperatures

Abstract:El Niño is known to affect Arctic temperature. However, the robustness of the observed relationship between El Niño and Arctic temperature remains debated. Here we reexamine the impacts of El Niño on the Arctic temperature in boreal winter [December–February (DJF)] using reanalysis datasets and atmospheric model experiments. This study shows that extreme El Niño events are accompanied by significant boreal winter cooling over northeastern Canada and Greenland (NECG), while moderate eastern Pacific (MEP) El Niño events are accompanied by significant boreal winter warming in this region. For central Pacific (CP) El Niño events, a cold signal appears in NECG, but with no statistical significance. During extreme El Niño winters, a positive Pacific–North America (PNA)-like pattern is seen in the Pacific, and anomalously negative 200-hPa geopotential height (Z200) strengthening occurs over NECG, which is a response to anomalous strong wave activity originating in the tropical Pacific. El Niño-induced circulation anomalies can further induce NECG cooling via cold temperature advection and decreased downward longwave radiation. In contrast, for the MEP El Niño, the subtropical jet extends zonally from the North Pacific to the North Atlantic, which is accompanied by increased baroclinicity anomalies and favors the propagation of synoptic eddies into the Atlantic, leading to a negative North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)-like pattern. This in turn could further enhance the positive Z200 anomalies over NECG, resulting in anomalous warming in NECG through warm temperature advection and enhanced downward longwave radiation. A series of atmospheric model experiments simulate the observed circulation changes and associated warming over NECG.

Comparative Analysis of Cold Events over Central and Eastern China Associated with Arctic Warming in Early 2008 and 2016

Abstract:This study investigates the possible reasons for the cold events over central and eastern China (CEC) in early 2008 and 2016. The Arctic is dramatically warming, in particular over the Barents-Kara Seas region and notable cold events were observed over CEC although La Nina and El Nino events occurred in early 2008 and 2016, respectively. At the same time, the westerlies decelerated at middle latitudes and the Ural Mountains Blocking High and the Siberian High strengthened. Subsequent analyses indicate that the cold events and the related atmospheric circulation anomalies are closely associated with Arctic warming. Additionally, the cold (warm) phase of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation causes the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) to strengthen (weaken) and correspondingly intensify (mitigate) the cold events over CEC. In brief, the Arctic warming is superimposed on La Nina or El Nino events by thermal and dynamic processes, which impact the relevant atmospheric circulation and EAWM and then induce the cold events over CEC in early 2008 and 2016 although their intensity and coverage are also different to some extent.
Different Processes of Occurrence of Cold Events over East Asia in El Niño and La Niña Winters

Abstract:The occurrence of cold events over East Asia is modulated by the background mean state associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The present study compares the processes of occurrence of cold events over East Asia between El Niño and La Niña winters. It is found that the difference in atmospheric mean state in El Niño and La Niña winters leads to different processes of occurrence of cold events over East Asia during boreal winter. The cold events during El Niño winters are closely related to negative Arctic Oscillation (AO) and those during La Niña winters are contributed by the Ural blocking. Both negative AO in El Niño winters and the Ural blocking in La Niña winters are followed by a Rossby wave train over Eurasia that strengthens the Siberian high and the East Asian trough, leading to cold anomalies over East Asia. The negative AO during El Niño winters is related to a tropospheric teleconnection that weakens the polar vortex, which is confirmed by numerical experiment with a linear baroclinic model. The Ural blocking is associated with the Arctic sea ice loss in the Barents Sea during La Niña winters through the reduced meridional temperature gradient and decreased zonal mean winds. The Arctic sea ice loss over the Barents Sea during La Niña winters is contributed by the development of anticyclonic anomalies induced by the enhanced stationary waves.
The Extremely Cold 2009–2010 Winter and Its Relationship with the Arctic Oscillation

Abstract:The Northern-Hemisphere high-latitude continents experienced extremely cold weathers in winter 2009–2010. In the present paper, we show that the cold winter was associated with the activity of the Arctic oscillation (AO), which demonstrated the strongest negative polarity over the past six decades and persisted from December, 2009 to March, 2010. It is found that variations of the surface AO was closely linked to stratospheric polar vortex anomalies, and that the surface AO phases followed downward propagation of stratospheric Northern-Hemisphere Annular mode (NAM) anomalies during the winter. The case of 2009–2010 winter provides us with a typical example that anomalous stratospheric signals can be used to improve skills of long-range weather forecast and intra-seasonal climate prediction in winter time. We also show that the El Niño event, which started developing from May 2009, might contribute the formation of exceptionally negative and persistent AO and stratospheric NAM, particularly over North Pacific and North America.
Distinctive MJO Activity during the Boreal Winter of the 2015/16 Super El Niño in Comparison with Other Super El Niño Events

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Many previous studies have demonstrated that the boreal winters of super El Niño events are usually accompanied by severely suppressed Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) activity over the western Pacific due to strong descending motion associated with a weakened Walker Circulation. However, the boreal winter of the 2015/16 super El Niño event is concurrent with enhanced MJO activity over the western Pacific despite its sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) magnitude over the Niño 3.4 region being comparable to the SSTA magnitudes of the two former super El Niño events (i.e., 1982/83 and 1997/98). This study suggests that the MJO enhanced over western Pacific during the 2015/16 super El Niño event is mainly related to its distinctive SSTA structure and associated background thermodynamic conditions. In comparison with the previous super El Niño events, the warming SSTA center of the 2015/16 super El Niño is located further westward, and a strong cold SSTA is not detected in the western Pacific. Accordingly, the low-level moisture and air temperature (as well as the moist static energy, MSE) tend to increase in the central-western Pacific. In contrast, the low-level moisture and MSE show negative anomalies over the western Pacific during the previous super El Niño events. As the MJO-related horizontal wind anomalies contribute to the further westward warm SST-induced positive moisture and MSE anomalies over the western tropical Pacific in the boreal winter of 2015/16, stronger moisture convergence and MSE advection are generated over the western Pacific and lead to the enhancement of MJO convection.</p>

Exploring the Combined Effects of the Arctic Oscillation and ENSO on the Wintertime Climate over East Asia Using Self‐organizing Maps

Abstract:To examine the combined effects of the different spatial patterns of the Arctic Oscillation (AO)‐related sea level pressure (SLP) anomalies and the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO)‐related sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies on the wintertime surface temperature anomalies over East Asia, a nonlinear method based on self‐organizing maps is employed. Investigation of identified regimes reveals that the AO can affect East Asian temperature anomalies when there are significant SLP anomalies over the Arctic Ocean and northern parts of Eurasian continent. Analogously, ENSO is found to affect East Asian temperature anomalies when significant SST anomalies are present over the tropical central Pacific. The regimes with the warmest and coldest temperature anomalies over East Asia are both associated with the negative phase of the AO. The ENSO‐activated, Pacific‐East Asian teleconnection pattern could affect the higher latitude continental regions when the impact of the AO is switched off. When the spatial patterns of the AO and ENSO have significant, but opposite, impacts on the coastal winds, no obvious temperature anomalies can be observed over south China. Further, the circulation state with nearly the same AO and Niño3 indices may drive rather different responses in surface temperature over East Asia. The well‐known continuous weakening (recovery) of the East Asian winter monsoon that occurred around 1988 (2009) can be attributed to the transitions of the spatial patterns of the SLP anomalies over the Arctic Ocean and Eurasian continent, through their modulation on the occurrences of the Ural and central Siberian blocking events.
The key atmospheric drivers linking regional Arctic amplification with East Asian cold extremes

Abstract:Across the winters of 1999–2011, both the frequency of extreme cold events in East Asia and the Arctic Amplification showed an upward trend. Here we constructed regional AA index in the winters of 1979–2019, and examine the atmospheric driver that linked with strong AA scenarios and cold extreme in EA. Results show that the local atmospheric blocking are key drivers for regional AA occurrence on the intraseasonal timescale. Ural-Siberia blocking, which is tightly linked to the warming over Barents-Kara Seas (BK), is the primary atmospheric mode when regional AA corresponds with extreme East Asian cold days. However, when there is no warming over BK during the associated cold days in EA, the warming over western hemisphere become prominent, accompanied by the negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO − ) and blocking dipole system located at mid-Siberian and East Asian continent. Under this circulation configuration, not only does EA exhibits extremely cooling, but also northeastern North America experiences significant cold anomalies. Furthermore, precursor signals at 2–10 days are found between NAO − and each regional AA event when the days of BK warming are excluded. Our results highlight the importance of atmospheric circulation on linking the warming of different Arctic sectors and cold extremes in the mid-latitude continent, and point out the independent role of NAO − and BKS warming on regional AA.

Roles of Arctic Sea Ice and the Preceding Summer Arctic Atmospheric Circulation Anomalies in the At-Mospheric Circulations Anomalies of 2011/2012 and 2015/2016 Winters

Abstract:Using the NCEP/NCAR re-analysis data (re-analysis I),the ERA-Interim re-analysis data,and Hadley Center Arc-tic sea ice concentration data,main characteristics of atmospheric circulation anomalies in the winters of 2011/2012 and 2015/2016 were investigated based on diagnostic analysis and numerical simulations,and the possible causes were revealed.The re-sults indicate that although sea surface temperature anomalies in the tropical Pacific in the two winters corresponded to a weak La Ni~na and a strong El Ni~no event respectively and were distinctly different,the Siberian high was very strong in both win-ters,ranking the highest and the 5th highest since 1979,respectively.Autumn Arctic sea ice loss is a major reason that causes strong Siberian high in both winters.More important,anticyclonic surface winds in the preceding summer season over the Arc-tic Ocean and higher than normal air temperatures in the mid-and low-troposphere aloft strengthen the negative feedback of Arctic sea ice loss on the winter atmospheric variability,which further enhances the Siberian high and thereby favors the occur-rence of extreme cold events in East Asia.Apparently the dynamic and thermal dynamic conditions of summer Arctic atmos-pheric circulation not only influence Arctic sea ice in the summer and autumn,but also modulate the effects of Arctic sea ice loss on winter atmospheric variability.The strong El Ni~no event in the winter of 2015/2016 couldn't offset effects of Arctic sea ice loss and atmospheric circulation anomalies on the winter atmospheric variability over East Asia.
Sea Surface Temperature in the Subtropical Pacific Boosted the 2015 El Niño and Hindered the 2016 La Niña

Abstract:After the quick decaying of the 2015 super El Niño, the predicted La Niña unexpectedly failed to materialize to the anticipated standard in 2016. Diagnostic analyses, as well as numerical experiments, showed that this ENSO evolution of the 2015 super El Niño and the hindered 2016 La Niña may be essentially caused by sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the subtropical Pacific. The self-sustaining SSTAs in the subtropical Pacific tend to weaken the trade winds during boreal spring–summer, leading to anomalous westerlies along the equatorial region over a period of more than one season. Such long-lasting wind anomalies provide an essential requirement for ENSO formation, particularly before a positive Bjerknes feedback is thoroughly built up between the oceanic and atmospheric states. Besides the 2015 super El Niño and the hindered La Niña in 2016, there were several other El Niño and La Niña events that cannot be explained only by the oceanic heat content in the equatorial Pacific. However, the questions related to those eccentric El Niño and La Niña events can be well explained by suitable SSTAs in the subtropical Pacific. Thus, the leading SSTAs in the subtropical Pacific can be treated as an independent indicator for ENSO prediction, on the basis of the oceanic heat content inherent in the equatorial region. Because ENSO events have become more uncertain under the background of global warming and the Pacific decadal oscillation during recent decades, thorough investigation of the role of the subtropical Pacific in ENSO formation is urgently needed.
Combined effects of Arctic tropospheric warming and La Niña events on enhanced Eurasian cold anomalies

Abstract:This study investigates the combined effects of Arctic tropospheric warming and La Niña events on climate variations in Eurasia during boreal winter by utilizing the reanalysis data and the output of CMIP6 models. Results show that the "Warm Arctic-Cold Eurasia" pattern emerges with enhanced intensity under the combined effects compared with the individual effect of Arctic tropospheric warming or La Niña events. The significantly intensified Eurasian cold anomaly is observed in the north of Lake Baikal during the combined years. However, this cold anomaly shrinks substantially in warm Arctic years while shifting southwestward with a weaker intensity in La Niña years. Additionally, the winter atmospheric variability under the combined effects is much stronger than that under the individual effect of these two factors. Further investigation reveals that the La Niña event is probably crucial to dominating the basic distribution of winter temperature variability and the associated tropospheric circulation anomalies. Recent Arctic tropospheric warm anomalies are also essential, possibly amplifying the impact of the La Niña event on Eurasia through the weakened stratospheric polar vortex. These two factors jointly contribute to the enhanced " +−+ " wave train that displays over mid-high latitudes under the combined effects. This " +−+ " wave train exhibits alternative anticyclonic, cyclonic, and anticyclonic circulation anomalies over the Ural Mountains, Lake Baikal, and North Pacific, respectively. It guides wave energy from the Barents-Kara Seas (BKS) along the Ural Mountains to Lake Baikal and promotes the development of the Ural blocking anomaly that favors the intensified extreme cold temperature in Eurasia. The results of the CMIP6 models largely replicate some major features of the combined effects in the observations.

Abstract:AbstractA 1-year-lagged relationship between the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) in winter and El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the following year was examined with a multi-model ensemble analysis using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 3 models. A coherency index was developed as a measure of the coherence between the NAO and ENSO in each model and used as a weighting factor in the ensemble model. Weighted multi-model ensemble means of the regressed field on the maximum covariance analysis coefficients between the surface pressure field in the North Atlantic (NAO field) and the sea surface temperature field in the equatorial Pacific (ENSO field) were explored. The results indicated that when the wintertime NAO was in its negative (positive) phase, anomalous atmospheric circulation associated with a large (small) Eurasian snow mass anomaly intensified (weakened) the Asian cold surge and the westerly wind burst (WWB) in the warm pool region. Intensification of the WWB initiates El Niño. A sensitivity experiment using an idealized dry general circulation model revealed that the atmospheric response to anomalous, near-surface cooling associated with an anomalous Eurasian snow mass induced higher surface pressure near the Tibetan plateau and thus intensified the Asian cold surge and WWB. Linear regression analyses applied to the reanalysis data strongly supported the model results. Our results therefore suggest an influence of the NAO on the initiation of El Niño via a process that involves Eurasian snow anomalies associated with the NAO phase.

Abstract:The modulation of the late-summer Northeast China cold vortex (NCCV) by previous-winter El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is investigated using reanalysis data. A significant correlation dominates in the ENSO–NCCV relationship, with El Niño (La Niña) accompanied by a weak (strong) NCCV intensity. The Indian Ocean basin mode (IOBM) plays an essential role in relaying the impact of pre-winter ENSO on the following late-summer atmospheric circulation over Northeast Asia. A positive IOBM responds passively to eastern Pacific–type El Niño and can last till late summer when El Niño has already decayed. It triggers a meridional teleconnection pattern of the cyclone over central China and anticyclone over Northeast Asia, and thereby enables a background circulation adverse to the generation of the NCCV, and vice versa. In addition, the signals of the Indian Ocean during central Pacific–type El Niño and neutral years are extremely weak, which makes their effect on NCCV generation insignificant.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze observational and reanalysis data to demonstrate that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) significantly modulates winter Eurasian surface air temperature through its impact on the shape, frequency and persistence of Ural blocking (UB) events that last for 10-20 d. This impact results from changes in mid-high latitude westerly winds over Eurasia associated with the warming in the Barents-Kara Seas (BKS) through the AMO-driven high sea surface temperature and sea-ice decline and resultant weakening in meridional temperature gradients. The BKS warming has a strongest positive correlation with the AMO at a time lag of about 14 years. During the recent positive AMO phase, more persistent northwest-southeast (NW-SE) oriented UB events are favored by weakened westerly winds in Eurasian mid-high latitudes. Through cold atmospheric advection and radiative cooling, such UB events produce a strong, persistent and widespread cooling over Eurasia and enhance BKS warming during 1999-2015. However, the positive AMO phase cannot directly produce the Eurasian cooling if the UB is absent. Thus, we conclude that the recent AMO phase change is a major cause of the recent winter cooling over Eurasia through its impact on BKS temperature and sea ice, which in turn affect the meridional temperature gradient, the westerly winds and the UB events.
Southward cold airmass flux associated with the East Asian winter monsoon: Diversity and impacts

Abstract:Abstract The winter monsoon has strong impacts on East Asia via latitude-crossing southward cold airmass fluxes called cold air outbreaks (CAOs). CAOs have a high diversity in terms of meridional extent and induced weather. Using the daily cold airmass flux normalized at 50°N and 30°N during 1958–2016, we categorize the CAOs into three groups: high–middle (H–M), high–low (H–L) and middle–low (M–L) latitude events. The H–L type is found to have the longest duration, and the M–L type is prone to the strong CAOs regarding normalized intensity. The H–L and H–M events feature a large-scale dipole pattern of cold airmass flux over high-latitude Eurasia, and the former (latter) events feature relatively strong anticyclonic circulation over Siberia (cyclonic circulation over northeastern Asia). In contrast, the M–L events are characterized by a cyclonic anomaly over northeastern Asia but no obvious high-latitude precursor. The H–L events have the greatest coldness anomaly in airmasses near the surface, and the M–L events mainly feature a strong northerly wind. As a result, the H–L events induce widespread long-lasting low temperatures over East Asia, while the M–L events induce a sharp temperature drop at mainly low latitudes. Both H–L and M–L events coupling with the MJO enhance rainfall over the South China Sea, while H–M events increase rainfall over southern China. Moreover, the occurrences of H–L and M–L events experience a long-term decrease since the 1980s, which induce a stronger warming trend in the cold extremes than in the winter mean temperature at mid-low latitudes over East Asia.

Abstract:Response of global atmosphere to the prescribed realistic monthly-varying global sea surface temperature during 1948~1999 was simulated with an atmospheric general circulation model (CCM3/NCAR). Simulated interannual anomalous atmospheric circulation patterns over East Asia during different stages of an El Niño cycle were described, with SVD and composite analysis methods. During the summer when an El Niño event develops, there exists an anomalously negative geopotential height center over Northeast China, Korean peninsula and Sea of Japan, the subtropical high over the western Pacific is weaker and shifts eastward, and East Asian summer monsoon is strengthened. During the winter when an El Niño event matures, the East Asian trough is deepened, resulting in a strengthened winter monsoon over the north of East Asia but a weakened one over the south. During the summer when an El Niño event decays, the subtropical high over the western Pacific is stronger and shifts southward and westward, and East Asian summer monsoon is weakened. There is a closest relationship between the El Niño event and atmospheric anomalies in East Asia only during the summer when an El Niño event decays. Overall, the simulated atmospheric anomaly patterns over East Asia due to El Niño's impact may reasonably explain the observed precipitation anomaly patterns that were described in previous studies.

Abstract:This article uses an atmospheric general circulation model to show that the cooler North Atlantic sea surface temperature anomalies in summer can produce a Rossby wave-like teleconnection pattern strengthening the Siberian High in winter and next spring. The stronger Siberian High enhances the continent northerlies over East Asia and the associated cyclonic circulation over the western North Pacific, which provides a tropical westerly background for occurrence of the westerly wind bursts. The stronger northerlies over East Asia can also induce frequent cold surges, which tend to produce the equatorial westerly wind anomalies in the western Pacific for initiating an El Nino event.
