Abstract:Flowering time, or heading date, is a critical agronomic trait that determines the cropping season and regional adaptability, and ultimately grain yield in rice. A number of genes involved in photoperiodic flowering have been cloned and their roles in modulating expression of the flowering genes have been characterized to a certain extent. However, much less is known about the pathway in transmitting the day length response signal(s) to induce transition to reproductive growth. Here, we report a constitutive flowering repressor OsCOL10, which encodes a member of the CONSTANS-like (COL) family. Transgenic rice plants overexpressing OsCOL10 (driven by a strong promoter or by fusing it to the activation domain of VP64) showed delayed flowering time under both short and long days.OsCOL10 is affected by the circadian clock and is preferentially expressed in leaf mesophyll cells; it is localized to the nucleus and has transcriptional activation activity. Further studies show that OsCOL10 represses the expression of theFT-like genes RFT1 and Hd3a through Ehd1. Transcripts of OsCOL10 are more abundant in plants carrying a functional Ghd7 allele or overexpressing Ghd7 than in Ghd7-deficient plants, thus placing OsCOL10 downstream of Ghd7.Taking these findings together, we conclude that OsCOL10 functions as a flowering time repressor that links Ghd7 and Ehd1 in rice.
Functional and Evolutionary Characterization of the CONSTANS Gene Family in Short-Day Photoperiodic Flowering in Soybean

Abstract:CONSTANS (CO) plays a central role in photoperiodic flowering control of plants. However, much remains unknown about the function of the CO gene family in soybean and the molecular mechanisms underlying short-day photoperiodic flowering of soybean. We identified 26 CO homologs (GmCOLs) in the soybean genome, many of them previously unreported. Phylogenic analysis classified GmCOLs into three clades conserved among flowering plants. Two homeologous pairs in Clade I, GmCOL1a/GmCOL1b and GmCOL2a/GmCOL2b, showed the highest sequence similarity to Arabidopsis CO. The mRNA abundance of GmCOL1a and GmCOL1b exhibited a strong diurnal rhythm under flowering-inductive short days and peaked at dawn, which coincided with the rise of GmFT5a expression. In contrast, the mRNA abundance of GmCOL2a and GmCOL2b was extremely low. Our transgenic study demonstrated that GmCOL1a, GmCOL1b, GmCOL2a and GmCOL2b fully complemented the late flowering effect of the co-1 mutant in Arabidopsis. Together, these results indicate that GmCOL1a and GmCOL1b are potential inducers of flowering in soybean. Our data also indicate rapid regulatory divergence between GmCOL1a/GmCOL1b and GmCOL2a/GmCOL2b but conservation of their protein function. Dynamic evolution of GmCOL regulatory mechanisms may underlie the evolution of photoperiodic signaling in soybean.

Abstract:CONSTANS (CO) has a central role in the photoperiod response mechanism in Arabidopsis. However, the functions of legume CO genes in controlling flowering remain unknown. Here, we analyze the expression patterns of E1, E2 and GmCOL1a/1b using near-isogenic lines (NILs), and we further analyze flowering-related genes in gmcol1b mutants and GmCOL1a-overexpressing plants. Our data showed that both E3 and E4 up-regulate E1 expression, with the effect of E3 on E1 being greater than the effect of E4 on E1. E2 was up-regulated by E3 and E4 but down-regulated by E1. GmCOL1a/1b were up-regulated by E1, E2, E3 and E4. Although the spatial and temporal patterns of GmCOL1a/1b expression were more similar to those of AtCOL2 than to those of AtCO, gmcol1b mutants flowered earlier than wild-type plants under long-day (LD) conditions, and the overexpression of GmCOL1a caused late flowering under LD or natural conditions. In addition, GmFT2a/5a, E1 and E2 were down-regulated in GmCOL1a-overexpressing plants under LD conditions. Because E1/2 influences the expression of GmCOL1a, and vice versa, we conclude that these genes may function as part of a negative feedback loop, and GmCOL1a/b genes may serve as suppressors in photoperiodic flowering in soybean under LD conditions.

Abstract:In plants,flowering was triggered by endogenous and environmental signals.CONSTANS (CO) promotes flowering of Arabidopsis in response to long-day conditions.In a screening for stay-green mutants in Arabidopsis thaliana,a late-flowering mutant in Columbia background was isolated and tentatively named fnc25.It was later testified a new constans allele,co-9.When grown in the long-day conditions,the mutant showed a tall stature and dark-green leaves,bearing more rosettes leaves,flowering late and extending its lifespan.As far as the flowering time is concerned,the co-9 was insensitive to vernalization,flowering slightly earlier under short days.The late-flowering phenotype was not resumed by applying exogenous gibberellin.A 10 nt fragment deletion was found in the coding region of CO gene,resulting in premature termination of CO protein and the absence of the 92 amino acids of C-terminal domain.These phenotypes were most likely caused by a reduction in the function of CONSTANS.It is remarkable that the mRNA level of FT,one of the direct target genes of CO,is dramatically reduced,whereas mRNA levels of SOC1,the other direct target gene of CO is almost not changed.CO maybe promotes the target genes through difference domains of its protein.One domain is altered but the other is intact maybe only influence promoting of one of the target genes,and thereby lead to a late-flowering phenotype.

Abstract:CONSTANS ( CO ) plays a critical role in the photoperiodic flowering pathway. However, the function of soybean CO orthologs and the molecular mechanisms in regulating flowering remain largely unknown. This study characterized the natural variations in CO family genes and their association with flowering time and maturity in soybeans. A total of 21 soybean CO family genes ( GmCOL s) were cloned and sequenced in 128 varieties covering 14 known maturity groups (MG 0000-MG X from earliest to latest maturity). Regarding the whole genomic region involving these genes, GmCOL1 , GmCOL3 , GmCOL8 , GmCOL9 , GmCOL10 , and GmCOL13 were conserved, and the remaining 15 genes showed genetic variation that was brought about by mutation, namely, all single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and insertions-deletions (InDels). In addition, a few genes showed some strong linkage disequilibrium. Point mutations were found in 15 GmCOL genes, which can lead to changes in the potential protein structure. Early flowering and maturation were related to eight genes ( GmCOL1 / 3 / 4 / 8 / 13 / 15 / 16 / 19 ). For flowering and maturation, 11 genes ( GmCOL2 / 5 / 6 / 14 / 20 / 22 / 23 / 24 / 25 / 26 / 28 ) expressed divergent physiognomy. Haplotype analysis indicated that the haplotypes of GmCOL5-Hap2 , GmCOL13-Hap2/3 , and GmCOL28-Hap2 were associated with flowering dates and soybean maturity. This study helps address the role of GmCOL family genes in adapting to diverse environments, particularly when it is necessary to regulate soybean flowering dates and maturity.

Overexpression of PvCO1, a bamboo CONSTANS-LIKE gene, delays flowering by reducing expression of the FT gene in transgenic Arabidopsis

Abstract:Background: In Arabidopsis, a long day flowering plant, CONSTANS (CO) acts as a transcriptional activator of flowering under long day (LD) condition. In rice, a short day flowering plant, Hd1, the ortholog of CO, plays dual functions in respond to day-length, activates flowering in short days and represses flowering in long days. In addition, alleles of Hd1 account for ~ 44% of the variation in flowering time observed in cultivated rice and sorghum. How does it work in bamboo? The function of CO in bamboo is similar to that in Arabidopsis? Results: Two CO homologous genes, PvCO1 and PvCO2, in Phyllostachys violascens were identified. Alignment analysis showed that the two PvCOLs had the highest sequence similarity to rice Hd1. Both PvCO1 and PvCO2 expressed in specific tissues, mainly in leaf. The PvCO1 gene had low expression before flowering, high expression during the flowering stage, and then declined to low expression again after flowering. In contrast, expression of PvCO2 was low during the flowering stage, but rapidly increased to a high level after flowering. The mRNA levels of both PvCOs exhibited a diurnal rhythm. Both PvCO1 and PvCO2 proteins were localized in nucleus of cells. PvCO1 could interact with PvGF14c protein which belonged to 14-3-3 gene family through B-box domain. Overexpression of PvCO1 in Arabidopsis significantly caused late flowering by reducing the expression of AtFT, whereas, transgenic plants overexpressing PvCO2 showed a similar flowering time with WT under LD conditions. Taken together, these results suggested that PvCO1 was involved in the flowering regulation, and PvCO2 may either not have a role in regulating flowering or act redundantly with other flowering regulators in Arabidopsis. Our data also indicated regulatory divergence between PvCOLs in Ph. violascens and CO in Arabidopsis as well as Hd1 in Oryza sativa. Our results will provide useful information for elucidating the regulatory mechanism of COLs involved in the flowering. Conclusions: Unlike to the CO gene in Arabidopsis, PvCO1 was a negative regulator of flowering in transgenic Arabidopsis under LD condition. It was likely that long period of vegetative growth of this bamboo species was related with the regulation of PvCO1.

Abstract:WRKY transcription factors are involved in diverse life processes in plants. Thus far, these proteins have not been reported in Ginkgo biloba. In this study, we cloned GbWRKY11, a novel WRKY transcription factor gene, from G. biloba. The cDNA of GbWRKY11 is 1,707 bp in length and encodes a putative protein of 402 amino acids. The GbWRKY11 protein has an estimated molecular weight of 43.64 kDa and belongs to the WRKY lid group. The genomic DNA of GbWRKY11 contains two introns and three exons. GbWRKY11 gene is ubiquitously expressed in all tested tissues but preferentially expressed in female flowers. The GbWRKY11 transcript is upregulated in response to salicylic acid, ethephon, and abscisic acid but repressed by methyl jasmonate, salinity, cold and heat Thus, GbWRKY11, a newly identified G. biloba WRKY transcription factor, is apparently involved in multiple signaling pathways in response to abiotic stresses. Abstract:Cryptochrome (CRY) is a blue light receptor that is widely distributed in animals, plants, and microorganisms. CRY as a coding gene of cryptochrome that regulates the organism gene expression and plays an important role in organism growth and development. In this study, we identified four photolyase/cryptochrome (PHR/CRY) members from the genome of Ginkgo biloba. Phylogenetic tree analysis showed that the Ginkgo PHR/CRY family members were closely related to Arabidopsis thaliana and Solanum lycopersicum. We isolated a cryptochrome gene, GbCRY1, from G. biloba and analyzed its structure and function. GbCRY1 shared high similarity with AtCRY1 from A. thaliana. GbCRY1 expression level was higher in stems and leaves and lower in roots, male strobili, female strobili. GbCRY1 expression level fluctuated periodically within 24 h, gradually increased in the dark, and decreased under blue light. The newly germinated ginkgo seedlings were cultured under dark, white light, and blue light conditions. The blue light normally induced photomorphogenesis of ginkgo seedlings, which included hypocotyl elongation inhibition, leaf expansion inhibition, and chlorophyll formation. Treating dark-adapted ginkgo leaves with blue light could induce stomatal opening. At the same time, blue light reduced the expression level of GbCRY1 in the process of inducing photomorphogenesis and stoma opening. Our results provide evidence that GbCRY1 expression is affected by space, circadian cycle and light, and also proves that GbCRY1 is related to ginkgo circadian clock, photomorphogenesis and stoma opening process.

Abstract:Plants are sessile organisms that have acquired highly plastic developmental strategies to adapt to the environment. Among these processes, the floral transition is essential to ensure reproductive success and is finely regulated by several internal and external genetic networks. The photoperiodic pathway, which controls plant response to day length, is one of the most important pathways controlling flowering. In Arabidopsis photoperiodic flowering, CONSTANS (CO) is the central gene activating the expression of the florigen FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) in the leaves at the end of a long day. The circadian clock strongly regulates CO expression. However, to date, no evidence has been reported regarding a feedback loop from the photoperiod pathway back to the circadian clock. Using transcriptional networks, we have identified relevant network motifs regulating the interplay between the circadian clock and the photoperiod pathway. Gene expression, chromatin immunoprecipitation experiments, and phenotypic analysis allowed us to elucidate the role of CO over the circadian clock. Plants with altered CO expression showed a different internal clock period, measured by daily leaf rhythmic movements. We showed that CO upregulates the expression of key genes related to the circadian clock, such as CCA1, LHY, PRR5, and GI, at the end of a long day by binding to specific sites on their promoters. Moreover, a high number of PRR5-repressed target genes are upregulated by CO, and this could explain the phase transition promoted by CO. The CO-PRR5 complex interacts with the bZIP transcription factor HY5 and helps to localize the complex in the promoters of clock genes. Taken together, our results indicate that there may be a feedback loop in which CO communicates back to the circadian clock, providing seasonal information to the circadian system.

Abstract:This review traces research on CONSTANS (CO), from its discovery and functional studies to the exploration of its mechanisms in regulating flowering time and the circadian clock, and newly discovered functions, providing insight into the roles of CO and laying a foundation for future research. Plants have evolved a remarkable ability to sense and respond to changes in photoperiod, allowing adjustments to their growth and development based on seasonal and environmental cues. The floral transition is a pivotal stage in plant growth and development, signifying a shift from vegetative to reproductive growth. CONSTANS (CO), a central photoperiodic response factor conserved in various plants, mediates day‐length signals to control the floral transition, although its mechanisms of action vary among plants with different day‐length requirements. In addition, recent studies have uncovered roles for CO in organ development and stress responses. These pleiotropic roles in model plants and crops make CO a potentially fruitful target for molecular breeding aimed at modifying crop agronomic traits. This review systematically traces research on CO, from its discovery and functional studies to the exploration of its regulatory mechanisms and newly discovered functions, providing important insight into the roles of CO and laying a foundation for future research.

The DELLA-CONSTANS Transcription Factor Cascade Integrates Gibberellic Acid and Photoperiod Signaling to Regulate Flowering

Abstract:Gibberellin (GA) and photoperiod pathways have recently been demonstrated to collaboratively modulate flowering under long days (LDs). However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this collaboration remain largely unclear. In this study, we found that GA-induced expression of FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) under LDs was dependent on CONSTANS (CO), a critical transcription factor positively involved in photoperiod signaling. Mechanistic investigation revealed that DELLA proteins, a group of crucial repressors in GA signaling, physically interacted with CO. The DELLA-CO interactions repressed the transcriptional function of CO protein. Genetic analysis demonstrated that CO acts downstream of DELLA proteins to regulate flowering. Disruption of CO rescued the earlier flowering phenotype of the gai-t6 rga-t2 rgl1-1 rgl2-1 mutant (dellap), while a gain-of-function mutation in GA INSENSITIVE (GAI, a member of the DELLA gene) repressed the earlier flowering phenotype of CO-overexpressing plants. In addition, the accumulation of DELLA proteins and mRNAs was rhythmic, and REPRESSOR OF GA1-3 protein was noticeably decreased in the long-day afternoon, a time when CO protein is abundant. Collectively, these results demonstrate that the DELLA-CO cascade inhibits CO/FT-mediated flowering under LDs, which thus provide evidence to directly integrate GA and photoperiod signaling to synergistically modulate flowering under LDs.
Molecular Cloning,characterization and Expression of Iron Superoxide Dismutase Gene from Ginkgo Biloba

Abstract:The full-length cDNA sequence of Ginkgo biloba L. iron superoxide dismutase gene (GenBank: FJ555019) was isolated from Ginkgo biloba. The full-length cDNA of GbFeSOD contained a 720 bp open reading frame (ORF). The 3D structure modeling showed that GbFeSOD contained 11 helixes and 3 sheets and had a basketry motif in the enzyme core. Phylogenetic tree analysis revealed that GbFeSOD shared the same ancestor with other FeSOD. The result of Southern analy-sis showed that Gb FeSOD gene was encoded with a small gene family in Ginkgo biloba Northern hybridization analysis showed that GbFeSOD had the highest expression in leaves,then in stem ,and the least in fruit. There was no expression found in roots. The expression of GbFeSOD could be induced by ABA,osmotic stress, low temperature and heat injury; among them ,levels of FeSOD transcripts increased placidly a few hours after chilling stress at 4℃. Expression of the FeSOD gene was enhanced dramatically by heat stress at 40 ℃. However,the expression of GbFeSOD first increased and then decreasedafter heat stress at 44 ℃.

Abstract:Two CO paralogs in Brassica napus were confirmed and shown distinct expression pattern and function in promoting flowering and allelic variation s within BnaCO.A10 were found closely associated with ecotype divergence. CONSTANS (CO) is a key gene that responds to photoperiod and in Arabidopsis can promote flowering under long-day (LD) conditions. Brassica napus L. is a major oil crop and close relative of Arabidopsis, and arose via allopolyploidization from the diploids B. rapa (A genome) and B. oleracea (C genome). In this study, we confirmed that B. napus has two CO genes located on the A10 (BnaCO.A10) and C9 (BnaCO.C9) chromosomes. Significant differences in level and temporal pattern of transcription, as well as in protein function, of these homoeologous may have resulted from sequence variation in the promoter as well as in the coding region. Apart from two insertions of 527 bp and 2002 bp in the promoter of BnaCO.C9 that function as transcriptional enhancers, this gene is otherwise highly conserved in both promoter and coding region. However, BnaCO.A10 was classified into two haplotypes and transgene analysis in Arabidopsis and backcross analysis in rapeseed indicated that the winter-type haplotype had a greater effect in promoting flowering than the spring type. We discuss the contribution of CO alleles to species evolution, and for eco-geographic radiation following crop domestication, alongside scope for managing this locus in future breeding.

Abstract:In Arabidopsis, FKF1 (FLAVIN BINDING, KELCH REPEAT, F-BOX1) and GI (GIGANTEA) play important roles in flowering pathway through regulating daytime CO (CONSTANS) expression, and such a function is conserved across plants studied. But related reports are limited for soybean. In this study, we cloned FKF1 and GI homologs in soybean, and named as GmFKF1, GmFKF2, GmGI1, GmGI2, and GmGI3, respectively. GmGI1 had two alternative splicing forms, GmGI1α and GmGI1β. GmFKF1/2 transcripts were diurnally regulated, with a peak at zeitgeber time 12 (ZT12) in long days and at ZT10 in short days. The diurnal phases between GmGIs transcript levels greatly differed. GmGI2 expression was regulated by both the circadian clock and photoperiod. But the rhythmic phases of GmGI1 and GmGI3 expression levels were mainly conferred by long days. GmFKFs shared similar spatio-temporal expression profiles with GmGIs in all of the tissue/organs in different developmental stages in both LD and SD. Both GmFKF and GmGI proteins were targeted to the nucleus. Yeast two hybrid assays showed GmFKF1/GmFKF2 interacted with GmGI1/GmGI2/GmCDF1 (CYCLING DOF FACTOR CDF1 homolog in soybean); and the LOV (Light, Oxygen, or Voltage) domain in GmFKF1/GmFKF2 played an important role in these interactions. N-terminus of GmGI2 was sufficient to mediate its interaction with GmCDF1. Interestingly, N-terminus not full of GmGI3 interacted with GmFKF1/GmFKF2/GmCDF1. Ectopic over-expression of the GmFKF1 or GmFKF2 in Arabidopsis enhanced flowering in SD. Molecular Cloning and Function Analysis of an Anthocyanidin Synthase Gene from Ginkgo Biloba, and Its Expression in Abiotic Stress Responses

Abstract:Anthocyanidin synthase (ANS, leucoanthocyanidin oxygenase), a 2-oxoglutarate iron-dependent oxygenase, catalyzed the penultimate step in the biosynthesis of the anthocyanin class of flavonoids, from the colorless leucoanthocyanidins to the colored anthocyanidins. The full-length cDNA and genomic DNA sequences of ANS gene (designated as GbANS) were isolated from Ginkgo biloba for the first time. The full-length cDNA of GbANS contained a 1062-bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a 354-amino-acid protein. The genomic DNA analysis showed that GbANS gene had three exons and two introns. The deduced GbANS protein showed high identities to other plant ANSs. The conserved amino acids (H-X-D) ligating ferrous iron and residues (R-X-S) participating in 2-oxoglutarate binding were found in GbANS at the similar positions like other ANSs. Southern blot analysis indicated that GbANS belonged to a multi-gene family. The expression analysis by real-time PCR showed that GbANS expressed in a tissue-specific manner in G. biloba. GbANS was also found to be up-regulated by all of the six tested abiotic stresses, UV-B, abscisic acid, sucrose, salicylic acid, cold and ethylene, consistent with the promoter region analysis of GbANs. The recombinant protein was successfully expressed in E. coli strain with pET-28a vector. The in vitro enzyme activity assay by HPLC indicated that recombinant GbANS protein could catalyze the formation the cyanidin from leucocyanidin and conversion of dihydroquercetin to quercetin, suggesting GbANS is a bifunctional enzyme within the anthocyanidin and flavonol biosynthetic pathway.
Antihypertensive prescribing--a survey of general practice supervisors and registrars.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Hypertension is a common problem in general practice. Prescribing guidelines vary, but generally favour thiazide diuretics as first line treatment for uncomplicated essential hypertension. This study looks at antihypertensive prescribing habits of primary care practitioners and their knowledge of prescribing guideline recommendations. METHODS General practitioner supervisors and registrars from the Sydney Institute of General Practice Education and Training completed an online survey between April and July 2007. In response to a clinical vignette, participants indicated which agent they would use as first line therapy. In addition, they described what they knew about existing prescribing guidelines for essential hypertension. RESULTS One hundred and thirty-eight surveys were sent and 31 were returned completed. Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors were favoured as first line agents. Most believed current guidelines recommend more than one class of antihypertensive agent as appropriate for the initiation of single agent therapy. Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors were nominated most often as first line treatments recommended by guidelines. DISCUSSION The study is limited by a small sample size, a low response rate and the fact that participants all came from a similar location. Prescribing habits in the study group were not consistent with two out of three Australian guidelines on management of hypertension. Further research may allow generalisation to the wider Australian general practice community and indicate underlying reasons for this inconsistency. Hypertension management is an important educational topic for general practice registrars and GPs.
Systematic investigation and expression profiles of the GbR2R3-MYB transcription factor family in ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba L.)

Abstract:As one of the largest families of transcription factors, the R2R3-MYB family plays a significant role in plant growth, development, and response to hormone and environmental stress. To explore its evolutionary mechanism and potential function in Ginkgo biloba, a gymnosperm of great economic and ecological value, we presented a comprehensive analysis of the R2R3-MYB genes in ginkgo. Sixty-nine GbR2R3-MYB genes were identified and these genes could be classified into 33 groups based on the characteristics of the amino acid sequence of the R2R3-MYB domain and gene structure. Syntenic analyses indicated that few tandem and segmental duplications possibly resulted in the contraction of the GbR2R3-MYB gene family. Based on the transcriptome data, expression profiles of eight different tissues and different developmental stages of leaf and kernel showed that GbR2R3-MYB genes had distinct temporal and spatial expression characteristics. Specific expression patterns of the sixteen GbR2R3-MYB genes were also identified in response to different abiotic stresses and hormonal exposures. Further investigation revealed that GbR2R3-MYB19 was located in the nucleus and possessed transcriptional activity, implying its potential roles in the regulation of multiple biological processes. Our findings provide a robust basis for future comprehensive evolutionary and functional analyses of GbR2R3-MYB genes in ginkgo.

Abstract:The MADS-box transcription factors play diverse roles in plant development, but little is known about the role of MADS-box genes in Ginkgo biloba. Here a MADS-box transcription factor gene, designated as GbMADS9, was cloned and functionally characterized from G. biloba. The open reading frame of GbMADS9 comprised 684bp encoding a polypeptide of 227 amino acids. Phylogenetic analysis showed that GbMADS9 belonged to the GGM13 clade of Bsister-class MADS-box proteins. Real-time PCR results revealed that GbMADS9 was preferentially expressed in strobili and ovules. In addition, its expression was up-regulated with the increase in the size of ginkgo pulp, indicating that GbMADS9 had a positive function in ginkgo ovule development. The expression of GbMADS9 in ginkgo was up-regulated in response to salinity, drought, and cold stress, as well as to phytohormones gibberellic acid and abscisic acid. GbMADS9 transgenic Arabidopsis plants presented early flowering phenotypes compared with wild-type plants. The expression of the FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT), APETALA1 (AP1), LEAFY (LFY), and SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CO 1 (SOC1) genes involved in flowering was up-regulated, whereas the expression of AGAMOUS-LIKE24 (AGL24) and SHORT VEGETATIVE PHASE (SVP) was down-regulated in the GbMADS9 transgenic lines. The GbMADS9 transgenic plants exhibited better growth than wild-type plants under high osmotic stress. Enhanced tolerance of transgenic Arabidopsis plants to osmotic stress was confirmed by changes in the chlorophyll, proline, and malondialdehyde contents. Moreover, increased tolerance to osmotic stress in GbMADS9 transgenic lines was associated with improved antioxidant enzymatic activities. These findings suggested that GbMADS9 might be a promising gene to manipulate flowering time and improve abiotic stress tolerance in G. biloba.
