Eye-Tracking Analyses of a Coach's Pointing Gestures Timed With Speech: Implications for Players' Recall of Basketball Tactical Instructions

Abstract:Coaches often use pointing gestures alongside their speech to reinforce their message and emphasize important concepts during instructional communications, but the impact of simultaneous pointing gestures and speech on learners' recall remains unclear. We used eye-tracking and recalled performance to investigate the impact of a coach's variously timed pointing gestures and speech on two groups of learners' (novices and experts) visual attention and recall of tactical instructions. Participants were 96 basketball players (48 novice and 48 expert) who attempted to recall instructions about the evolution of a basketball game system under two teaching conditions: speech accompanied by gestures and speech followed by gestures. Overall, the results showed that novice players benefited more from instructional speech accompanied by gestures than from speech followed by gestures alone. This was evidenced by their greater visual attention to the diagrams, demonstrated through a higher fixation count and decreased saccadic shifts between the coach and the diagrams. Additionally, they exhibited improved recall and experienced reduced mental effort, despite having the same fixation time on the diagrams and equivalent recall time. Conversely, experts benefited more from instructional speech followed by gestures, indicating an expertise reversal effect. These results suggest that coaches and educators may improve their tactical instructions by timing the pairing of their hand gestures and speech in relation to the learner's level of expertise.

Abstract:We report on a study using TPI for imaging breast tumours ex vivo. Several breast samples were imaged and parameters from the time domain impulse functions were used to reveal contrast. Good correlation was found for area and shape of tumour in the THz images compared to that of histology. Terahertz spectroscopy shows that both the absorption coefficient and refractive index were higher for breast tissue containing tumor compared to normal. This study demonstrates the potential of TPI to image both invasive breast carcinomas and ductal carcinoma in situ using THz and encourages further studies.

Abstract:International Journal of Sports Science &Coaching, Ahead of Print. Numerous studies have been conducted to examine the effects of an instructor's pointing gestures on learning performance across a wide range of academic domains. There are, however, few clear instructional guidelines for enhancing learning from this visual guidance. This study tested the combined effects of the coach's pointing gesture and gaze guidance on attention and recall performance in field-based sports. This study used a 3 (control vs. gesture vs. gesture/gaze) × 2 (novice vs. expert) between-subjects factorial design. Results showed a significant interaction effect between expertise level and experimental conditions on visual attention and memorization performance. Novice players scored higher after studying tactical instructions with pointing gestures and gaze guidance than players who studied the same instructions with pointing gestures, who in turn performed better than players who received instructions without cues. Expert players showed the same level of performance when they received the instructions without cues and with pointing gestures. However, they showed lower performance (notably in the visual attention and the mental effort measures) when they received the video with pointing gestures and gaze guidance compared to the instructions without gestures and with pointing gestures. These results suggest that the effectiveness of nonverbal visual guidance changes depending on the players' level of expertise.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose was (1) to test a new version of a mental rotation task (MRT), which assesses mental rotation abilities of men and women for sport-specific items, and (2) to investigate potential differences in MRT performance, which are based on athletic expertise. Methods: Eighty-eight basketball experts (42 females) and 123 novices (64 females) were tested with a paper-and-pencil version of the "Mental Rotation Task—Basketball (MRT-BB)", which is similar to the original MRT. Instead of three-dimensional cubes, six different basketball plays were used as stimuli. The criterion stimulus of the 24 items was always displayed in an upright orientation (basket on top), located on the left side of the sheet. In addition, two "correct" alternatives (one stimulus rotated by 90° to the left or right and one by 180°) and two "incorrect" alternatives (either rotated mirror-images of the criterion stimulus or rotated images of a different play) were displayed in different positions of the same row. The task was to identify the "correct" alternatives. Results: Results demonstrated (a) an effect of sex, with more items solved for male participants as compared to female participants, and (b) an effect of expertise, with better performance of expert players than of novices. Conclusions: Male and female basketball experts show better mental rotation skills for sport-specific stimulus material. The MRT-BB extends standard tests of mental rotation to sport-specific stimulus material and can be used to test the sport-specific mental rotation skills of basketball players.

Abstract:Decision-making in team sports necessitates monitoring multiple performers located at different distances (i.e., viewing eccentricities) from a critical information source. The processing of peripheral information is generally impaired under anxiety and when responding to stimuli located at larger eccentricities. These hypotheses have not been sufficiently tested in dynamic performance environments. We examined how pressure and eccentricities affect decision-making and visual behaviour in 4v4 basketball defensive scenarios using a head mounted display. Experienced players monitored plays from the first-person perspective (centre position) and made defensive steps towards opponents threatening the basket from different eccentricities under low- and high-pressure. To tax working memory, participants simultaneously performed a backward counting task. Players responded slower and with lower accuracy to opponents at larger eccentricities. Players mostly fixated on the ball-carrier, but over 50% of fixations were located on peripheral players, indicating that information in the periphery must be frequently updated with foveal vision (i.e., pivot strategy). When pressured, participants increased mental effort and improved counting performance; however, gaze behaviour and decision-making were relatively unaffected. Findings suggest that basketball players respond more quickly to opponents positioned at lower compared to higher eccentricities at the cost of impaired responses to opponents in the periphery.

Abstract:In basketball defence, it is impossible to keep track of all players without peripheral vision. This is the first study to investigate peripheral vision usage in an experimentally controlled setup, with sport-specific basketball stimuli from a first-person perspective, large viewing eccentricities (up to 90° to the left and right), and natural action responses. A CAVE and a motion-tracking system was used to project the scenarios and capture movement responses of high- and low-skilled basketball players, respectively. Four video conditions were created: (1) a simple reaction time task without crowding (only attackers), (2) a simple reaction time task with crowding (with attackers and defenders), (3) a choice-reaction time task where the player cutting to the basket eventually passed the ball to another player and (4) a game simulation. The results indicated eccentricity effects in all tests, a crowding effect in condition 2, and expertise differences in conditions 3 and 4 only. These findings suggest that viewing eccentricity has an impact on response times, that crowding is a limiting factor for peripheral perception in sports games, and that high-skilled but not low-skilled players can compensate for eccentricity effects in real game situations, indicating their superior positioning and perceptual strategies.

Abstract:Background and objectives: The experience obtained from motor expertise may contribute to and enhance the development of particular visuo-spatial abilities. This exploratory and preliminary study compares the response times of a mental rotation task with egocentric and object-based transformation instructions between soccer players of varying performance levels and gymnasts. Methods: Fifty-six male participants were grouped based on their sports experience. Soccer-specific novices (SS-N: n = 19; age = 15.9 ± 0.87), soccer-specific experts (SS-E: n = 17; age = 16.4 ± 0.70), gymnastic-specific experts (GS-E: n = 10; age = 16.6 ± 1.71), and gymnastic-specific novices (GS-N: n = 10; age = 16.0 ± 1.63) were recruited to perform a perceptual task (recognition of soccer-specific poses) and mental rotation tasks with different stimuli (soccer-specific poses, cubes, line-drawings of hands, letters). Results: During the perceptual task with instructions on egocentric transformation and soccer-specific poses, we observed that gymnasts had longer response times than soccer players. Our findings also suggest that experts correctly identified most of the poses in terms of accuracy. In the mental rotation task with object-based transformation, gymnasts processed all stimuli, even the soccer-specific poses, more accurately than both soccer groups. Conclusion: Our results suggest that gymnasts' motor expertise plays a role in their performance on mental rotation tasks involving both egocentric and object-based transformations, regardless of the stimuli presented.

Perceptual-Cognitive Skills of Basketball Referees: On-The-Court Visual Search Behavior

Abstract:Perceptual-cognitive skills are crucial in successfully managing information and decision-making in sports, particularly in high-pressure environments. We examined 16 basketball referees' on-the-court visual search behavior by comparing referees of different experience levels (experienced, n = 8; and novice, n = 8) and different court positions. Participants' visual search behavior was analyzed during 20 live gameplay situations using eye-tracking technology. Dependent variables were the number of eye fixations, mean fixation time, and total fixation time on selected areas of interest; and independent variables were the referees' experience and visual angles (lead and trail referee positions). Experienced referees exhibited significantly lower total fixation time than novice referees (p = .009). Referees in the trail position showed more fixations of shorter duration and a greater focus on the basket than those in the lead position. Our findings suggest that the visual search behavior of basketball referees varies with their court position and experience. These data provide valuable insights into referees' complex visual search patterns in the real-game context, and they highlight the importance of considering viewing angle and experience in future research.

Abstract:Mental rotation is the ability to rotate mental representations of objects in space. Shepard and Metzler's shape-matching tasks, frequently used to test mental rotation, involve presenting pictorial representations of 3D objects. This stimulus material has raised questions regarding the ecological validity of the test for mental rotation with actual visual 3D objects. To systematically investigate differences in mental rotation with pictorial and visual stimuli, we compared data of university students from a virtual reality experiment. Comparing both conditions within subjects, we found higher accuracy and faster reaction times for 3D visual figures. We expected eye tracking to reveal differences in participants' stimulus processing and mental rotation strategies induced by the visual differences. We statistically compared fixations (locations), saccades (directions), pupil changes, and head movements. Supplementary Shapley values of a Gradient Boosting Decision Tree algorithm were analyzed, which correctly classified the two conditions using eye and head movements. The results indicated that with visual 3D figures, the encoding of spatial information was less demanding, and participants may have used egocentric transformations and perspective changes. Moreover, participants showed eye movements associated with more holistic processing for visual 3D figures and more piecemeal processing for pictorial 2D figures.

Oncogenic MYD88 Mutations Are Rare Events in Double-Hit B-Cell Lymphomas

Abstract:Here, we report the prevalence of activating MYD88 mutations in 37 cases of doubleor triple-hit B-cell lymphoma (17 cMyc+/BCL2+, 16 cMyc+/BCL6+ and 4 triple hit). Our data suggest that the MYD88 p.L265P mutation does not play a significant role in the pathogenesis of this rare entity. Formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens from 37 patients with double-hit/triple-hit B-cell lymphomas were retrieved from the registry of the Reference Center for Lymph Node Pathology and Hematopathology, University Hospital of Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Lübeck. 17 cases presented with both MYC and BCL2 rearrangement, and 16 cases showed MYC and BCL6 rearrangement. Four cases revealed aberrations in all three loci (THL). The same study group was previously analyzed for TP53 mutation status, and most of the cases were recently examined for ID3 mutations [8] . All studies were approved by the Ethics Commission at the University of Lübeck, and are in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. All cases were histopathologically revaluated by 2 experienced hematopathologists without knowledge of mutation status (A.C.F. and H.M.). Chromosomal breakpoints were analyzed by means of FISH using dual-color break-apart probes for 8q24 ( MYC ), 18q21 ( BCL2 ) and 3q27 ( BCL6 ) as described [2] . A pyrosequencing approach for the detection of MYD88 p.L265P was subsequently applied as described previously [9] . Briefly, DNA extraction was performed B-cell lymphomas with two or more activating chromosomal breakpoints, one of which affecting the MYC locus (8q24), are rare yet recurrent lymphoproliferative disorders that have recently been referred to as doublehit/triple-hit lymphomas (DHL/THL) [1] . Despite significant recent advances in our understanding of this rare entity, DHL remain insufficiently characterized at a molecular level [2] . From a clinical perspective, DHL recurrently show advanced-stage disease with higher international prognostic index at diagnosis and a high rate of bone marrow and CNS involvement. Outcome in patients treated according to conventional chemotherapy or high-dose chemotherapy regimens followed by stem cell transplantation remains grim [3, 4] . MYD88 p.L265P has recently been identified as a highly recurrent mutation in Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia and the activated B-cell like subgroup of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) as well as several other lymphoproliferative disorders such as primary DLBCL of the testis and CNS [5, 6] . Due to its activating effect on NF-κB signaling through the Toll-like receptor/interleukin 1 pathway, MYD88 mutation status is likely to be of interest for upcoming targeted therapy approaches [7] . With dismal prognosis and lack of therapeutic options necessitating the broadening of our understanding of this type of lymphoma at a molecular level, we sought to explore the prevalence of oncogenic MYD88 mutation p.L265P in a comprehensive cohort of DHL/THL. Seeing virtual while acting real: Visual display and strategy effects on the time and precision of eye-hand coordination

Abstract:Effects of different visual displays on the time and precision of bare-handed or tool-mediated eye-hand coordination were investigated in a pick-and-place-task with complete novices. All of them scored well above average in spatial perspective taking ability and performed the task with their dominant hand. Two groups of novices, four men and four women in each group, had to place a small object in a precise order on the centre of five targets on a Real-world Action Field (RAF), as swiftly as possible and as precisely as possible, using a tool or not (control). Each individual session consisted of four visual display conditions. The order of conditions was counterbalanced between individuals and sessions. Subjects looked at what their hands were doing 1) directly in front of them ("natural" top-down view) 2) in top-down 2D fisheye view 3) in top-down undistorted 2D view or 4) in 3D stereoscopic top-down view (head-mounted OCULUS DK 2). It was made sure that object movements in all image conditions matched the real-world movements in time and space. One group was looking at the 2D images with the monitor positioned sideways (sub-optimal); the other group was looking at the monitor placed straight ahead of them (near-optimal). All image viewing conditions had significantly detrimental effects on time (seconds) and precision (pixels) of task execution when compared with "natural" direct viewing. More importantly, we find significant trade-offs between time and precision between and within groups, and significant interactions between viewing conditions and manipulation conditions. The results shed new light on controversial findings relative to visual display effects on eye-hand coordination, and lead to conclude that differences in camera systems and adaptive strategies of novices are likely to explain these.
VisCourt: In-Situ Guidance for Interactive Tactic Training in Mixed Reality

Abstract:In team sports like basketball, understanding and executing tactics—coordinated plans of movements among players—are crucial yet complex, requiring extensive practice. These tactics require players to develop a keen sense of spatial and situational awareness. Traditional coaching methods, which mainly rely on basketball tactic boards and video instruction, often fail to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and the real-world application of tactics, due to shifts in view perspectives and a lack of direct experience with tactical scenarios. To address this challenge, we introduce VisCourt, a Mixed Reality (MR) tactic training system, in collaboration with a professional basketball team. To set up the MR training environment, we employed semi-automatic methods to simulate realistic 3D tactical scenarios and iteratively designed visual in-situ guidance. This approach enables full-body engagement in interactive training sessions on an actual basketball court and provides immediate feedback, significantly enhancing the learning experience. A user study with athletes and enthusiasts shows the effectiveness and satisfaction with VisCourt in basketball training and offers insights for the design of future SportsXR training systems.
Basketball referee's gaze behavior and stimulus selection in relation to visual angle perspective and officiating mechanics and expertise

Abstract:This work aimed to describe the visual search behavior of basketball referees. Eight national and eight regional basketball referees took part in the study. The participants watched five projected gameplay video clips twice from different perspectives: lead and trail referee positions. Dependent variables were based on the extrinsic ocular motility (number of fixations, average fixation time, and total fixation time on the selected areas of interest), and the independent variables were expertise (expert vs novice) and visual angle (lead vs trail referee position). Most gaze behavior differences were found between the lead and trail positions (total fixation time: F = 10.79; p < 0.01; ƞp2 = 0.435; average fixation time: F = 16.23; p < 0.01; ƞp2 = 0.537). It was found that basketball referees mainly follow a target strategy on the attacking player with the ball and a visual pivot on the players' trunk. Expertise does not determine the number or time of fixations, but it does influence fixation location.
The Large Binocular Telescope

Abstract:The Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) Observatory is a collaboration between institutions in Arizona, Germany, Italy, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio and Virginia. The telescope on Mt. Graham in Arizona uses two 8.4-meter diameter primary mirrors mounted side-by-side to produce a collecting area equivalent to an 11.8-meter circular aperture. A unique feature of LBT is that the light from the two primary mirrors can be combined to produce phased-array imaging of an extended field. This cophased imaging along with adaptive optics gives the telescope the diffraction-limited resolution of a 22.65-meter telescope. Binocular imaging with two co-pointed prime focus cameras began in Fall 2007, and science observing continues routinely. We will describe the scientific results and technical challenges of monocular Gregorian focus observations starting in Spring 2008. Commissioning of the first Gregorian spectrometer (LUCIFER1) has been completed with a rigid secondary mirror, and science observations have begun in December 2009. The telescope uses two F/15 adaptive secondaries to correct atmospheric turbulence. The first of these adaptive mirrors has been tested in Italy with the adaptive loop closed, and arrived at the telescope in February 2010. The first adaptive optics images were achieved on-sky in May 2010. The Direct Gregorian focus has been prepared for the arrival of the second Gregorian spectrometer (MODS1).

Perception of 3 D scenes from pictures

Abstract:Bmnelleschi (1413) was the first to demonstrate that a 3D scene can be represented by a 2D perspective picture in such a way that retinal images produced by the scene and the picture are identical (subsequently, Leonardo pointed out that this is true only when the observer's eye is placed at the center of perspectivity that was used to produce this picture). I t follows that in the absence of depth cues, the percepts are identical as well. A question arises as to the effect on the percept of viewing the picture from a point different from the center of perspectivity. According to Pireme's (1970) theory, the percept involves taking the cues to the orientation and position of the picture relative to the observer into account, in order to compensate for the incorrect viewing point; when these cues are available, the percept is accurate. We will demonstrate a new visual phenomenon called "cuboid illusion" which contradicts Pirenne's theory. Our experimental results show that the percept of a 3D object from its picture systematically depends on the orientation and position of the picture relative to the observer even in the presence of many cues.

Abstract:A large body of literature supports the effectiveness of using video simulations to improve decision-making skills in invasion sports. However, whether these improvements are transferable (from the laboratory to the court/field) and generalizable (from trained to untrained plays) remains unknown. In addition, it remains to be determined whether presenting the video simulations using virtual reality provides an added-value. To investigate these questions, varsity-level basketball players underwent four training sessions during which they observed video clips of basketball plays presented either on a computer screen (CS group) or using a virtual reality headset (VR group). A third group watched footage from NCAA playoff games on a computer screen (CTRL group). Decision-making was assessed on-court before and after the training sessions using two types of plays: "trained" plays (presented during the CS and VR training sessions) and "untrained" plays (presented only during the on-court tests). When facing the trained plays in the posttest, both VR and CS groups significantly outperformed the CTRL group. In contrast, when facing the untrained plays, the VR group outperformed both the CS and CTRL groups. Our results indicate that CS training leads to transferable but non-generalized decision-making gains while VR training leads to transferable and generalized gains.

The effect of deliberate play on tactical performance in basketball

Abstract:This field-based study analyzed effects of a deliberate-play training program in basketball on tactical game intelligence and tactical creativity. 22 youth basketball players, ages 10 to 12 years, completed basketball training in one of two equal-sized groups. The deliberate-play training program contained unstructured game forms in basketball. The placebo group played in traditional structured basketball game forms. Tactical intelligence and creativity was assessed before and after an 18-lesson intervention. Analysis showed significant training improvement only for the deliberate-play group. In addition, this outperformance of the placebo group was not only observed for tactical creativity but also for tactical intelligence.

Abstract:Certain commercial games train spatial skills, a subset of cognitive skills used in school, the workplace, and everyday life. However, it is difficult to design spatial skill training games without knowing why some games are effective. In addition, existing game training studies do not analyze motivational factors for critical target populations. We conducted a study comparing spatial skill training effects and enjoyment for low spatial skill students on three training interventions: the computer game Homeworld Bound: Redux, digital spatial workbook exercises, and an active control group. We found no training effects for any intervention, but performance in certain game levels predicted spatial skill, and low spatial skill students enjoyed the game more than the workbook exercises. We provide three design recommendations for spatial skill training games based on our findings: use asymmetry for object manipulation tasks, require explicit 2D to 3D representation translation, and employ time pressure for navigation tasks.
