Abstract:BACKGROUND:Previous research showed a significant association between mathematics and working memory (WM). However, evidence regarding the different effects of verbal and visuospatial WM on mathematical abilities was very limited.AIMS:The current research aims to explore the relationship between verbal and visuospatial WM with mathematical abilities, and how this relationship is moderated by age and math domains. We also wonder whether the results would change when we use several tests for each component and use a latent variable approach for more reliable measurement.SAMPLE:131 first graders and 144 fifth graders from a primary school in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, China, participated our research.METHODS:All participants completed three verbal and three visuospatial WM tasks, mathematics tests, and fluid intelligence test. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used to examine the pattern of relations among these constructs.RESULTS:The results of hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that verbal WM significantly predicted mathematics achievement for fifth graders, while failed for first graders. However, visuospatial WM played a substantive role in both graders' mathematical performance. The different role of the two WM components also depend on various fields of mathematics.CONCLUSION:Our results indicated the distinct influence of verbal and visuospatial WM on primary school students' mathematical abilities and highlighted the developmental and domain-specific effects of WM on mathematics.
Numerical Magnitude Processing in Abacus-Trained Children with Superior Mathematical Ability: an Eeg Study

Abstract:Distance effect has been regarded as the best established marker of basic numerical magnitude processes and is related to individual mathematical abilities. A larger behavioral distance effect is suggested to be concomitant with lower mathematical achievement in children. However, the relationship between distance effect and superior mathematical abilities is unclear. One could get superior mathematical abilities by acquiring the skill of abacus-based mental calculation (AMC), which can be used to solve calculation problems with exceptional speed and high accuracy. In the current study, we explore the relationship between distance effect and superior mathematical abilities by examining whether and how the AMC training modifies numerical magnitude processing. Thus, mathematical competencies were tested in 18 abacus-trained children (who accepted the AMC training) and 18 non-trained children. Electroencephalography (EEG) waveforms were recorded when these children executed numerical comparison tasks in both Arabic digit and dot array forms. We found that: (a) the abacus-trained group had superior mathematical abilities than their peers; (b) distance effects were found both in behavioral results and on EEG waveforms; (c) the distance effect size of the average amplitude on the late negative-going component was different between groups in the digit task, with a larger effect size for abacus-trained children; (d) both the behavioral and EEG distance effects were modulated by the notation. These results revealed that the neural substrates of magnitude processing were modified by AMC training, and suggested that the mechanism of the representation of numerical magnitude for children with superior mathematical abilities was different from their peers. In addition, the results provide evidence for a view of non-abstract numerical representation.
A gifted SNARC? Directional spatial-numerical associations in gifted children with high-level math skills do not differ from controls

Abstract:The SNARC (Spatial-Numerical Association of Response Codes) effect (i.e., a tendency to associate small/large magnitude numbers with the left/right hand side) is prevalent across the whole lifespan. Because the ability to relate numbers to space has been viewed as a cornerstone in the development of mathematical skills, the relationship between the SNARC effect and math skills has been frequently examined. The results remain largely inconsistent. Studies testing groups of people with very low or very high skill levels in math sometimes found relationships between SNARC and math skills. So far, however, studies testing such extreme math skills level groups were mostly investigating the SNARC effect in individuals revealing math difficulties. Groups with above average math skills remain understudied, especially in regard to children. Here, we investigate the SNARC effect in gifted children, as compared to normally developing children (overall n = 165). Frequentist and Bayesian analysis suggested that the groups did not differ from each other in the SNARC effect. These results are the first to provide evidence for the SNARC effect in a relatively large sample of gifted (and mathematically highly skilled) children. In sum, our study provides another piece of evidence for no direct link between the SNARC effect and mathematical ability in childhood.

Abstract:Mental arithmetic and estimating number position on the number-line are proven predictors of success in mathematics education, and tap on the basic properties of numerical representations and processes: spatial organization and scaling. However, little is known about the interdependences between these abilities in the preschool period, when the child uses an approximate numerical representation and only acquires the symbolic system. We tested 119 preschoolers aged 3–7 with two non-symbolic arithmetic tasks (±1 and ± 5), symbolic ±1 arithmetic, and non-symbolic and symbolic number-line estimation in 1–9 range. Some form of operational momentum indicating the use of spatial processing appeared in all arithmetic tasks, partly replicating previous studies, however these effects were not correlated across tasks, and only the symbolic arithmetic correlated with number line estimation (nonsymbolic and symbolic). We hypothesize that mental arithmetic involves spatial processing, but scale and spatial arrangement are not inherent properties of number representation but task-specific constructions. Educational relevance statement In our research, we dealt with the performance of mental arithmetic and estimating the position of a number on a number-line in both non-symbolic (sets of dots) and symbolic (Arabic numerals) versions in children aged 3–7. We were more interested in specific biases than accuracy in completing tasks - the logarithmic scaling of the number line, and tendencies to overestimate/underestimate the result in addition/subtraction (so called "magnitude operational momentum") or linking addition with shifting attention to the right and subtraction to the left ("directional operational momentum"). Such biases, and the relation between them and the accuracy measures in the given task, may shed light on the most basic numerical representations and processes in children, and in particular the spatial properties of the mental representation of number and the use of "recycled" spatial attention processes for its processing. Understanding such basic representations and processes is crucial to planning early math education. Our results showed that in preschoolers, new symbolic representations of number link to more primitive, non-symbolic ones, and that mapping number to space to adapt spatial attention processes for number processing may be crucial for early numerical development.

Abstract:<p>Mathematical knowledge is constructed hierarchically from basic understanding of quantities and the symbols that denote them. Discrimination of numerical quantity in both symbolic and non-symbolic formats has been linked to mathematical problem-solving abilities. However, little is known of the extent to which overlap in quantity representations between symbolic and non-symbolic formats is related to individual differences in numerical problem solving and whether this relation changes with different stages of development and skill acquisition. Here we investigate the association between neural representational similarity (NRS) across symbolic and non-symbolic quantity discrimination and arithmetic problem-solving skills in early and late developmental stages: elementary school children (ages 7–10 years) and adolescents and young adults (AYA, ages 14–21 years). In children, cross-format NRS in distributed brain regions, including parietal and frontal cortices and the hippocampus, was positively correlated with arithmetic skills. In contrast, no brain region showed a significant association between cross-format NRS and arithmetic skills in the AYA group. Our findings suggest that the relationship between symbolic-non-symbolic NRS and arithmetic skills depends on developmental stage. Taken together, our study provides evidence for both mapping and estrangement hypotheses in the context of numerical problem solving, albeit over different cognitive developmental stages.</p>

Abstract:Objective. To determine the incidence of isolated anencephaly and spina bifida in the Arkhangelskaja Oblast (AO) in Russia and in Norway, and to study the maternal age distribution of these congenital defects. Design. A register‐based incidence study. Setting. Two different populations in Northern Europe. Population. All registered fetuses and newborns with at least 12 weeks’ gestation in the populations of AO (1995–2004) and Norway (1999–2003) were included. A total of 141,159 in AO and 293,708 in Norway. Methods. Data were obtained from the malformation register in AO and the Medical Birth Registry of Norway. Main outcome measures. Total and maternal age‐group specific incidence of anencephaly and spina bifida. Results. A total of 298 newborns and abortuses had one of the defects in AO (21.1/10,000 (95% confidence interval:±3.4)) and 317 (10.8/10,000 (±1.2)) in Norway. The incidence of anencephaly was 10.7/10,000 in AO and 5.5 in Norway, and of spina bifida 10.4 and 5.3, respectively. An inverse association between the age of the pregnant women and the incidence of neural tube defects was observed in both populations; for both anencephaly and spina bifida in AO; but only for anencephaly (age < 30 years) in Norway. Conclusions. The incidence of both anencephaly and spina bifida was higher in a northern population of Russia than in Norway. The burden of anencephaly was highest in the youngest maternal age group in both populations. The relatively high incidence of both anencephaly and spina bifida in the Russian population warrants further studies.
Bidirectional, Longitudinal Associations Between Math Ability and Approximate Number System Precision in Childhood

Abstract:Research suggests that individual differences in math abilities correlate with approximate representations of quantity that are supported by a primitive Approximate Number System (ANS). However, relatively little research has addressed the direction of this association in early childhood. Here we examined the development of the ANS and math ability longitudinally in 3- to 5-year-old children. Children were observed at three time points roughly six months apart; they completed a nonsymbolic numerical comparison task that measured ANS precision and a standardized math assessment. A series of cross-lagged panel models was then estimated to explore the associations between ANS precision and math ability over time. Bidirectional associations between ANS precision and math ability emerged: Early ANS precision was related to children’s later math skills, and early math ability also significantly predicted children’s later ANS precision. Evidence for mutual enhancement over time between the ANS and symbolic math ability adds to our growing understanding of the ANS and how the ANS and math knowledge interact.

Abstract:Preschoolers' mathematics knowledge develops early and varies substantially. The current study focused on two ontogenetically early emerging cognitive skills that may be important predictors of later math skills (i.e., geometry and numeracy): children's understanding of abstract relations between objects and quantities as evidenced by their patterning skills and the approximate number system (ANS). Children's patterning skills, the ANS, numeracy, geometry, nonverbal intelligence (IQ), and executive functioning (EF) skills were assessed at age 4 years, and their numeracy and geometry knowledge was assessed again a year later at age 5 (N = 113). Above and beyond children's initial knowledge in numeracy and geometry, as well as IQ and EF, patterning skills and the ANS at age 4 uniquely predicted children's geometry knowledge at age 5, but only age 4 patterning uniquely predicted age 5 numeracy. Thus, although patterning and the ANS are related, they differentially explain variation in later geometry and numeracy knowledge. Results are discussed in terms of implications for early mathematics theory and research.
[A case report of mitral valve aneurysm].

Abstract:A case of aneurysm of the mitral valve associated with aortic valve regurgitation is presented. The patient was 45-years-old female who complained of palpitation and underwent both aortic and mitral valve replacement. We could not detect the aneurysm by the transthoracic echocardiography because of it's small size (14 mm in diameter). The transesophageal echocardiography showed the aneurysm of the anterior mitral valve leaflet toward the left atrium clearly. This report describes that transesophageal echocardiography appears to be available for accurate diagnosis of the mitral valve disease, especially for the mitral valve aneurysm.
Relations between spatial skills and math performance in elementary school children: A longitudinal investigation.

Abstract:Previous research has demonstrated a link between spatial and math skills. However, little research has examined this relation longitudinally. The present study examines the development of and reciprocal relations between spatial and math skills in elementary school students. We administered two spatial tasks and a math task to 312 first- through third-grade students who were tested in the spring for three consecutive school years. Linear growth models showed increases for each skill across the three school years. A random intercepts cross-lagged panel analysis indicated that controlling for task-specific (i.e., autoregressive) growth, there was a relation between spatial visualization/mental rotation at Year 1 and math performance at Year 2. In addition, math scores in Year 2 predicted Year 3 spatial visualization/mental rotation skills as well as Year 3 spatial perception skills. Further, there were significant differences in task performance depending on grade in school, and there were gender differences in spatial perception and sometimes math performance. Thus, we find some evidence for reciprocal relations between spatial and math skills over development, but our results suggest that the particular type of spatial skill measured is important to consider in studying these relations. Abstract:While several studies have shown that the performance on numerosity comparison tasks is related to individual differences in math abilities, others have failed to find such a link. These inconsistencies could be due to variations in which math was assessed, different stimulus generation protocols for the numerosity comparison task, or differences in inhibitory control. This within-subject study is a conceptual replication tapping into the relation between numerosity comparison, math, and inhibition in adults (N = 122). Three aspects of math ability were measured using standardized assessments: Arithmetic fluency, calculation, and applied problem solving skills. Participants’ inhibitory skills were measured using Stroop and Go/No-Go tasks with numerical and non-numerical stimuli. Finally, non-symbolic number sense was measured using two different versions of a numerosity comparison task that differed in the stimulus generation protocols (Panamath; Halberda, Mazzocco & Feigenson, 2008, https://doi.org/10.1038/nature07246; G&R, Gebuis & Reynvoet, 2011, https://doi.org/10.3758/s13428-011-0097-5). We find that performance on the Panamath task, but not the G&R task, related to measures of calculation and applied problem solving but not arithmetic fluency, even when controlling for inhibitory control. One possible explanation is that depending on the characteristics of the stimuli in the numerosity comparison task, the reliance on numerical and non-numerical information may vary and only when performance relies more on numerical representations, a relation with math achievement is found. Our findings help to explain prior mixed findings regarding the link between non-symbolic number sense and math and highlight the need to carefully consider variations in numerosity comparison tasks and math measures.

Abstract:Abstract Background The current evidence on an integrative role of the domain-specific early mathematical skills and number-specific executive functions (EFs) from informal to formal schooling and their effect on mathematical abilities is so far unclear. The main objectives of this study were to (i) compare the domain-specific early mathematics, the number-specific EFs, and the mathematical abilities between preschool and primary school children, and (ii) examine the relationship among the domain-specific early mathematics, the number-specific EFs, and the mathematical abilities among preschool and primary school children. Methods The current study recruited 6- and 7-year-old children ( N total = 505, n 6yrs = 238, and n 7yrs = 267). The domain-specific early mathematics as measured by symbolic and nonsymbolic tasks, number-specific EFs tasks, and mathematics tasks between these preschool and primary school children were compared. The relationship among domain-specific early mathematics, number-specific EFs, and mathematical abilities among preschool and primary school children was examined. MANOVA and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used to test research hypotheses. Results The current results showed using MANOVA that primary school children were superior to preschool children over more complex tests of the domain-specific early mathematics; number-specific EFs; mathematical abilities, particularly for more sophisticated numerical knowledge; and number-specific EF components. The SEM revealed that both the domain-specific early numerical and the number-specific EFs significantly related to the mathematical abilities across age groups. Nevertheless, the number comparison test and mental number line of the domain-specific early mathematics significantly correlated with the mathematical abilities of formal school children. These results show the benefits of both the domain-specific early mathematics and the number-specific EFs in mathematical development, especially at the key stages of formal schooling. Understanding the relationship between EFs and early mathematics in improving mathematical achievements could allow a more powerful approach in improving mathematical education at this developmental stage.

Abstract:Symbolic numeracy first emerges as children learn the meanings of number words and how to use them to precisely count sets of objects. This development starts before children enter school and forms a foundation for lifelong mathematics achievement. Despite its importance, exactly how children acquire this basic knowledge is unclear. Here we test competing theories of early number learning by measuring event-related brain potentials during a novel number word-quantity comparison task in 3-4-year-old preschool children (N = 128). We find several qualitative differences in neural processing of number by conceptual stage of development. Specifically, we find differences in early attention-related parietal electrophysiology (N1), suggesting that less conceptually advanced children process arrays as individual objects and more advanced children distribute attention over the entire set. Subsequently, we find that only more conceptually advanced children show later-going frontal (N2) sensitivity to the numerical-distance relationship between the number word and visual quantity. The nature of this response suggested that exact rather than approximate numerical meanings were being associated with number words over frontal sites. No evidence of numerical distance effects was observed over posterior scalp sites. Together these results suggest that children may engage parallel individuation of objects to learn the meanings of the first few number words, but, ultimately, create new exact cardinal value representations for number words that cannot be defined in terms of core, nonverbal number systems. More broadly, these results document an interaction between attentional and general cognitive mechanisms in cognitive development. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Conceptual development in numeracy is associated with a shift in attention from objects to sets. Children acquire meanings of the first few number words through associations with parallel attentional individuation of objects. Understanding of cardinality is associated with attentional processing of sets rather than individuals. Brain signatures suggest children attribute exact rather than approximate numerical meanings to the first few number words. Number-quantity relationship processing for the first few number words is evident in frontal but not parietal scalp electrophysiology of young children.

Abstract:Models of numerical cognition consider a visuo-spatial representation to be at the core of numerical processing, the 'mental number line'. Two main interference effects between number and space have been described: the SNARC effect reflects a small number/left side and large number/right side association (number-location mapping); the size-congruity effect (SCE) reflects a small number/small size and large number/large size association (number-size mapping). Critically, a thorough investigation on the representational source for these two number-space mappings is lacking, leaving open the question of whether the same representation underlies both phenomena. Here, we build on a recent study (Viarouge and de Hevia in Front Hum Neurosci 15:750964, 2021) in order to address this question in three experiments, by systematically manipulating the presence of the two conditions that might elicit an interaction between SNARC and SCE: (i) an implicit task whereby numerical and spatial information are task-irrelevant, (ii) a design in which the number-space congruency relative to both mappings vary at the same level -either both within or between blocks. Experiment 1 replicated the interaction between the two mappings when both factors were present. Experiments 2 and 3 dissociated the two factors by varying the two mappings at the same level but using an explicit comparison task (Experiment 2), or by using an implicit task but with mappings varying at different levels (Experiment 3). We found that both factors, either in combination or used in isolation, drive the interaction between the two number-space mappings. These findings are discussed in terms of the weight given to each mapping, suggesting that a single representation encompassing both number-space mappings is therefore activated whenever both mappings are given equal weight through task requirements.

Understanding mathematical development in preschool children: The association between mathematical language and mathematical abilities

Abstract:Children's understanding of mathematical language has been put forward as an important correlate of their mathematical abilities. To date, no study has disentangled the precise roles of different types of mathematical language, such as quantitative (e.g., more ) or spatial language (e.g., above ) in preschool children. The existing studies have limited their assessment of mathematics to children's numerical competencies, but they did not consider broader aspects of mathematics, such as geometry and measurement. We aimed to address these two gaps by assessing 75 preschool-aged children's (Mage = 4 years 10 months) understanding of quantitative and spatial language. We investigated how both aspects of mathematical language correlated with children's performance in different domains of mathematics, namely numerical competencies, geometry and measurement. Results showed that, in contrast to our expectations, both quantitative language and spatial language were equally correlated with children's mathematical abilities. When we additionally controlled for children's general language, only spatial language was related to mathematical abilities, specifically to numerical competencies and to geometry. An exploratory path analysis further revealed that there was a strong association between children's general language skills and their performance in all three mathematical domains. In summary, these preschool children's general language skills were more strongly correlated with their success in mathematical domains than were their quantitative or spatial language skills.

Abstract:This study analyzed the contribution of cognitive processes (planning, attention, simultaneous and successive processing) and domain-specific skills (counting, number processing and conceptual comprehension) to the arithmetic performance achieved in the last three grades (4th, 5th, and 6th) of elementary school. Three groups of students with a different arithmetic achievement level were characterized. The predictive value of the cognitive processes and the math specific skills are explored through diverse covariance and discriminant analyses. Participants were 110 students (M = 10.5 years, SD = 1.17) classified in three groups: mathematical difficulties (MD; n = 26), high achieving (HA; n = 26), and typical achieving (TA; n = 58). Cognitive processes and domain-specific skills were evaluated in two individual sessions at the end of the school year. Nonverbal intelligence was assessed in a final collective session with each class. The mathematical difficulties group's achievement was deficient in simultaneous and successive processing, number processing, and conceptual comprehension compared to the typical achievement group. High achievement children obtained significantly better results than the typical achievement children in simultaneous processing, counting, number processing, and conceptual comprehension. Number processing and conceptual comprehension were the most consistent classifiers, although successive and simultaneous processing, respectively, also contributed to identifying students with mathematical difficulties and high achievement. These findings have practical implications for preventive and intervention proposals linked to the observed profiles.

Abstract:Understanding the relationship between symbolic numerical abilities and individual differences in mathematical competencies has become a central research endeavor in the last years. Evidence on this foundational relationship is often based on two behavioral signatures of numerical magnitude and numerical order processing: the canonical and the reverse distance effect. The former indicates faster reaction times for the comparison of numerals that are far in distance (e.g., 2 8) compared to numerals that are close in distance (e.g., 2 3). The latter indicates faster reaction times for the ordinal judgment of numerals (i.e., are numerals in ascending/descending order) that are close in distance (e.g., 2 3 4) compared to numerals that are far in distance (e.g., 2 4 6). While a substantial body of literature has reported consistent associations between the canonical distance effect and arithmetic abilities, rather inconsistent findings have been found for the reverse distance effect . Here, we tested the hypothesis that estimates of the reverse distance effect show qualitative differences (i.e., not all participants show a reverse distance effect in the expected direction) rather than quantitative differences (i.e., all individuals show a reverse distance effect , but to a different degree), and that inconsistent findings might be a consequence of this variation. We analyzed data from 397 adults who performed a computerized numerical comparison task, a computerized numerical order verification task (i.e., are three numerals presented in order or not), a paper pencil test of arithmetic fluency, as well as a standardized test to assess more complex forms of mathematical competencies. We found discriminatory evidence for the two distance effects. While estimates of the canonical distance effect showed quantitative differences, estimates of the reverse distance effect showed qualitative differences . Comparisons between individuals who demonstrated an effect and individuals who demonstrated no reverse distance effect confirmed a significant moderation on the correlation with mathematical abilities. Significantly larger effects were found in the group who showed an effect. These findings confirm that estimates of the reverse distance effect are subject to qualitative differences and that we need to better characterize the underlying mechanisms/strategies that might lead to these qualitative differences.
Spatial complexity of character-based writing systems and arithmetic in primary school: a longitudinal study

Abstract:Previous research has consistently found an association between spatial and mathematical abilities. We hypothesized that this link may partially explain the consistently observed advantage in mathematics demonstrated by East Asian children. Spatial complexity of the character-based writing systems may reflect or lead to a cognitive advantage relevant to mathematics. Seven hundered and twenty one 6-9-year old children from the UK and Russia were assessed on a battery of cognitive skills and arithmetic. The Russian children were recruited from specialist linguistic schools and divided into four different language groups, based on the second language they were learning (i.e., English, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese). The UK children attended regular schools and were not learning any second language. The testing took place twice across the school year, once at the beginning, before the start of the second language acquisition, and once at the end of the year. The study had two aims: (1) to test whether spatial ability predicts mathematical ability in 7-9 year-old children across the samples; (2) to test whether acquisition and usage of a character-based writing system leads to an advantage in performance in arithmetic and related cognitive tasks. The longitudinal link from spatial ability to mathematics was found only in the Russian sample. The effect of second language acquisition on mathematics or other cognitive skills was negligible, although some effect of Chinese language on mathematical reasoning was suggested. Overall, the findings suggest that although spatial ability is related to mathematics at this age, one academic year of exposure to spatially complex writing systems is not enough to provide a mathematical advantage. Other educational and socio-cultural factors might play a greater role in explaining individual and cross-cultural differences in arithmetic at this age.
