Abstract:
Surface modification of nanomaterials is essential for their biomedical applications owing to their passive immune clearance and damage to reticuloendothelial systems. Recently, a cell membrane‐coating technology has been proposed as an ideal approach to modify nanomaterials owing to its facile functionalized process and good biocompatibility for improving performances of synthetic nanomaterials. Here, recent advances of cell membrane‐coated nanomaterials are reviewed based on the main biological functions of the cell membrane in living cells. An overview of the cell membrane is introduced to understand its functions and potential applications. Then, the applications of cell membrane‐coated nanomaterials based on the functions of the cell membrane are summarized, including physical barrier with selective permeability and cellular communication via information transmission and reception processes. Finally, perspectives of biomedical applications and challenges about cell membrane‐coated nanomaterials are discussed.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main issue this paper attempts to address is the biocompatibility and immune clearance problems faced by nanomaterials in biomedical applications. Specifically, nanomaterials may be recognized and cleared by the immune system after entering the body, leading to changes in their performance or failure, thereby limiting their applications in drug delivery, disease diagnosis, and treatment. To solve these problems, researchers have proposed a cell membrane coating technique. By coating the surface of nanomaterials with cell membranes, the nanomaterials are endowed with good biocompatibility and specific biological functions, such as selective permeability and intercellular communication ability, thereby improving the stability and functionality of nanomaterials in vivo. The paper discusses in detail the latest advances in cell membrane-coated nanomaterials, including their design principles, preparation methods, and various applications in the biomedical field, such as drug carriers, nano-reactors, prolonged blood circulation time, acting as decoys to protect normal cells, targeting diseased sites, and regulating immune responses. Additionally, the paper discusses the potential challenges and future development directions of cell membrane-coated nanomaterials in biomedical applications.
