Abstract:The rapid consumption and obsolescence of electronics have resulted in e-waste being one of the fastest growing waste streams worldwide. Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are among the most complex e-waste, containing significant quantities of hazardous and toxic materials leading to high levels of pollution if landfilled or processed inappropriately. However, PCBs are also an important resource of metals including copper, tin, lead and precious metals; their recycling is appealing especially as the concentration of these metals in PCBs is considerably higher than in their ores. This article is focused on a novel approach to recover copper rich phases from waste PCBs. Crushed PCBs were heat treated at 1150°C under argon gas flowing at 1L/min into a horizontal tube furnace. Samples were placed into an alumina crucible and positioned in the cold zone of the furnace for 5 min to avoid thermal shock, and then pushed into the hot zone, with specimens exposed to high temperatures for 10 and 20 min. After treatment, residues were pulled back to the cold zone and kept there for 5 min to avoid thermal cracking and re-oxidation. This process resulted in the generation of a metallic phase in the form of droplets and a carbonaceous residue. The metallic phase was formed of copper-rich red droplets and tin-rich white droplets along with the presence of several precious metals. The carbonaceous residue was found to consist of slag and ∼30% carbon. The process conditions led to the segregation of hazardous lead and tin clusters in the metallic phase. The heat treatment temperature was chosen to be above the melting point of copper; molten copper helped to concentrate metallic constituents and their separation from the carbonaceous residue and the slag. Inert atmosphere prevented the re-oxidation of metals and the loss of carbon in the gaseous fraction. Recycling e-waste is expected to lead to enhanced metal recovery, conserving natural resources and providing an environmentally sustainable solution to the management of waste products.

Abstract:The rapid pace of innovations and the frequency of replacement of electrical and electronic equipment has made waste printed circuit boards (WPCB) one of the fastest growing waste streams. The frequency of replacement of equipment can be caused by a limited time of proper functioning and increasing malfunctions. Resource utilization of WPCBs have become some of the most profitable companies in the recycling industry. To facilitate WPCB recycling, several advanced technologies such as pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy and biometallurgy have been developed. Bioleaching uses naturally occurring microorganisms and their metabolic products to recover valuable metals, which is a promising technology due to its cost-effectiveness, environmental friendliness, and sustainability. However, there is sparse comprehensive research on WPCB bioleaching. Therefore, in this work, a short review was conducted from the perspective of potential microorganisms, bioleaching mechanisms and parameter optimization. Perspectives on future research directions are also discussed.

Abstract:Electronic waste (e-waste), including waste printed circuit boards (PCBs), has caused global concern owing to its potential environmental pollution and rich resource content. Previous studies have indicated that urban mining for metals recycling can decrease energy consumption and pollutants emission compared to the extraction of metals from natural minerals. During the production of PCBs, a large amount of spent tin stripping solution (TSS) is simultaneously generated, containing the significant amounts of metal ions and residue nitric acid. In this study, the coprocessing of waste PCBs and spent TSS at room temperature was proposed and investigated, with the aim of developing an environmentally sound process to address these problems. This coprocessing approach proved to be effective. 87% of the Sn-Pb solder, 30% of the Cu, 29% of the Fe, and 78% of the Zn was leached from waste PCBs with spent TSS after 2 h, at room temperature. Moreover, approximately 87% of the electronic components were dismantled from waste PCBs. About 99% of the Sn, Pb, Fe, Cu, and Zn were recovered from the leaching solutions by chemical precipitation. The proposed green process has substantial advantages over traditional recovery methods of heating waste PCBs, in terms of both material and energy efficiency.

Abstract:Abstract Electrical and electronic waste is considered a valuable stream of secondary metal resources because it contains metals such as copper, silver and gold. However, it is also classified as hazardous waste as it contains toxic heavy metals such as lead and cadmium. If electronic waste is not managed properly, the toxic metals may pose serious risks to the environment and human health, especially complex fractions such as printed circuit boards (PCBs) and cathode ray tubes (CRTs). The current study investigated a new process for the thermal treatment of CRTs and PCBs in an integrated flowsheet for metal recovery. Smelting tests were conducted to demonstrate that oxidative smelting of PCB concentrate and recycled CRT slag can produce a crude copper alloy with a grade of more than 95%. Another set of smelting tests was conducted to demonstrate that reductive smelting of CRT funnel glass and recycled PCB fume can produce a crude lead alloy with a grade of more than 95%. The investigations were undertaken in a pilot-scale top blown rotary converter (TBRC). The PCBs were smelted under mildly oxidising conditions at temperatures up to 1350 °C. The CRTs were smelted under mildly reducing conditions at temperatures up to 1250 °C. The study demonstrated that it is technically feasible to produce crude alloys of copper and lead from electronic waste, using an integrated process flowsheet. Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are an essential component of electronic devices. The digitalization and upgrading of gadget generates lots of PCB-containing electronic waste. Conserving resources and protecting the environment requires the recycling of such e-waste. This paper focuses on the recovery of metals from waste PCBs using physical pre-treatment and hydrometallurgical processes. Initially, the waste PCBs were pre-treated and beneficiated to separate the metallic and non-metallic fractions. The metallic concentrate obtained was leached using nitric acid (a strong oxidative agent) to dissolve the metals. The system was fully jacketed with a scrubber and condenser to prevent the emission of toxic gases into the environment. The process parameters, such as the effect of acid concentration, pulp density, temperature, time, etc., were studied, optimized, and scientifically validated. The kinetics of leaching fitted well with the following shrinking core models: XB = kc.t for Cu, (1 − (1 − XB)1/2) for Ni, and 1 − 3(1 − XB)2/3 + 2(1 − XB) for Pb. The activation energy was 19.42 kJ/mol. The tin left in the residue was treated separately. The developed process is useful for recovering metals from waste PCBs and has the potential to be commercialized after conducting scale-up studies.

Association of early caffeine administration and neonatal outcomes in very preterm neonates.

Abstract:IMPORTANCE Advantages of caffeine for apnea of prematurity have prompted clinicians to use it prophylactically even before apnea. OBJECTIVE To determine the effect of early initiation of caffeine therapy on neonatal outcomes in very preterm infants born in Canada. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS A retrospective cohort study was conducted. Patients included preterm neonates born at less than 31 weeks' gestation admitted to 29 participating Canadian Neonatal Network neonatal intensive care units between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2012. EXPOSURES Neonates who received caffeine were divided into 2 groups based on the following timing of caffeine initiation: within the first 2 days after birth (early) and on or after the third day following birth (late). MAIN OUTCOME AND MEASURE A composite of death or bronchopulmonary dysplasia. RESULTS Of 5517 eligible neonates, 5101 (92.5%) received caffeine (early: 3806 [74.6%]; late: 1295 [25.4%]). There was no difference in weight or gestational age at birth between the groups. Neonates in the early group had decreased odds of a composite outcome of death or bronchopulmonary dysplasia (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 0.81; 95% CI, 0.67-0.98) and patent ductus arteriosus (AOR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.62-0.89). There was no difference between the groups in mortality (AOR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.70-1.37), necrotizing enterocolitis (AOR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.65-1.20), severe neurological injury (AOR, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.63-1.01), or severe retinopathy of prematurity (AOR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.56-1.10). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In very preterm neonates, early (prophylactic) caffeine use was associated with a reduction in the rates of death or bronchopulmonary dysplasia and patent ductus arteriosus. No adverse impact on any other outcomes was observed.

Abstract:Electronic waste remains a pressing global environmental concern. Addressing the proper treatment and recycling of waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) is imperative to mitigate environmental pollution and prevent the loss of valuable resources. In this study, a comparative analysis of acidic and alkaline leaching processes for recovering base metals (Cu, Sn, Zn, and Ni) from WPCBs was conducted by process simulation (using HSC software). Life cycle inventories were compiled accordingly. Furthermore, by incorporating an alternative method for precious metal recovery, the life cycles (using openLCA software) of both processes for recovering all metals were examined. The results revealed that while the acidic leaching process showed higher recoveries for base metals and advantages in terms of lower electricity consumption and wastewater generation, it also exhibited a more pronounced environmental impact due to the chemical input in the HNO 3 leaching process. Conversely, the alkaline leaching process utilized fewer chemicals, generated less solid waste and off-gases, resulting in a lower overall environmental impact. For recycling 1 t of WPCBs, the acidic leaching process achieved recoveries of 92% for tin, 99% for copper, 79% for zinc, and 94% for nickel, whereas the alkaline leaching process yielded recoveries of 96%, 93%, 78%, and 74% for the corresponding metals. Notably, the alkaline leaching process demonstrated a lower global warming potential of 11,395 kg CO 2 eq, compared to the 12,459 kg CO 2 eq associated with the acidic leaching process. In the evaluation of the alkaline leaching process, most environmental impacts were found to be lower than for virgin production. As a result, while the acidic leaching process is indeed more efficient in metal recycling, the alkaline leaching process emerges as a stronger contender in terms of environmental sustainability, with great potential for further technical improvements.

Abstract:The rapid increase in electronic waste (e-waste) generation and its unsustainable management pose a threat to the environment and human well-being. However, various valuable metals are present in e-waste, which makes it a potential secondary source to recover metals. Therefore, in the present study, efforts were made to recover valuable metals (Cu, Zn, and Ni) from waste printed circuit boards (WPCB) of computers using methanesulfonic acid (MSA). MSA is contemplated as a biodegradable green solvent and has a high solubility for various metals. The effect of various process parameters (MSA concentration, H2O2 concentration, stirring speed, liquid to solid ratio, time, and temperature) was investigated on metal extraction to optimize the process. At the optimized process conditions, 100% extraction of Cu and Zn was achieved, while Ni extraction was around 90%. The kinetic study for metal extraction was performed using a shrinking core model and findings showed that MSA-aided metal extraction is a diffusion-controlled process. Activation energies were found to be 9.35, 10.89, and 18.86 kJ/mol for Cu, Zn, and Ni extraction, respectively. Furthermore, the individual recovery of Cu and Zn was achieved using the combination of cementation and electrowinning, which resulted in 99.9% purity of Cu and Zn. The current study proposes a sustainable solution for the selective recovery of Cu and Zn from WPCB.
Exploring bioleaching potential of indigenous Bacillus sporothermodurans ISO1 for metals recovery from PCBs through sequential leaching process

Abstract:Waste Management &Research, Ahead of Print. The low efficiency and selectivity limitations of biohydrometallurgy technique compel the researchers to explore novel microbial strains acclimated to metal existence site with higher toxicity tolerance and bioleaching capability in order to improve the role of bioleaching process for e-waste management. The current study aimed to explore bioleaching potential of indigenous Bacillus sporothermodurans ISO1; isolated from metal habituated site. The statistical approach was utilized to optimize a variety of culture variables including temperature, pH, glycine concentration and pulp density that impact bio-cyanide production and leaching efficiency. The highest dissolution of Cu and Ag, 78% and 37% respectively, was obtained at 40 °C, pH 8, glycine concentration 5 g L−1, and pulp density 10 g L−1 through One Factor at a Time (OFAT), which was further increased up to 95% Cu and 44% Ag recovery through the interactive effect of key factors in the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) approach. Furthermore, Chemo-biohydrometallurgy approach was utilized to overwhelm the specificity limitation; as higher concentration of Cu in computer printed circuit boards (CPCBs) causes interference to recover other metals. The sequential leaching through ferric chloride (FeCl3), recovered Cu prior to bio-cyanidation by B. sporothermodurans ISO1 and resulted in the improved leaching of Ag (57%), Au (67%), Pt (60%), etc. The current work reports on B. sporothermodurans ISO1, a new Bacillus strain that exhibits highest toxicity tolerance (EC50 = 425 g L−1) than earlier reported stains and has higher leaching potential that can be implemented to large-scale biometallurgical process for e-waste treatment to achieve the agenda of sustainable development goal (SDG) under the strategies of urban mining.

Abstract:The development of environmentally friendly and energy-saving processes for recycling electronic waste (e-waste) is still relevant today. The research presented in this work relates to hydrometallurgy, namely, the electrochemical leaching of metals from e-waste under the action of alternating current (AC) into hydrochloric acid solutions of electrolytes, and can be used for leaching both noble and non-ferrous metals from secondary raw materials. The main object of the study was disintegrator-crushed mixed computer PCBs metal-rich powders with a particle size (d) of <90 μm. The impact of such leaching process parameters as temperature (Tel) and composition of the electrolyte solution, AC density (i) on the electrodes, experiment duration (tex) while maintaining a constant electrolyte temperature (60 °C, 70 °C, and 80 °C) on the metal (Au, Ag, Cu, Al, Ni, Pb, Sn, Ti, Zn, and Fe) leaching efficiency has been studied. In addition, under similar experimental conditions, but without external control of Tel, the kinetics of metal leaching from raw material powders obtained via PCBs single and double crushing in a disintegrator has been also presented. Comparison of raw material powders obtained from different batches of the source material showed both the variability of its chemical composition and the different kinetics of Au and Ag leaching under the same experimental conditions. The optimal conditions for pretreatment of the raw material obtained by single crushing in a disintegrator (CHCl = 6 mol·L−1, i = 0.88 A·cm−2, tex = 1 h, solid-to-liquid ratio—8.6 g·L−1 and without external control of Tel) were determined. It has been shown that this electrochemical pretreatment is accompanied by transition of only base metals into the electrolyte solution, making it possible to significantly reduce their concentration in the final solution. Under pretreatment conditions, the following degree of metal leaching (RMe) has been established: RCu = 98.2%, RAl = 62.8%, RNi = 53.4%, RPb = 93.2%, RSn = 98.0%, RTi = 88.5%, RZn = 61.6%, and RFe = 78.8%. As a result of a subsequent two-hour electrochemical treatment of a solid residue, the degree of leaching of gold and silver was 73.6% and 86.7%, respectively. The presented results provide a broader understanding of the possibility of using the proposed electrochemical hydrochlorination method for noble and base metals leaching from waste PCBs. The novelty and practical value of this research is a validation of the developed technology in laboratory conditions using the real batch of the PCBs. This approach may also be useful to researchers involved in the recycling of other types of secondary raw materials.

Ecofriendly recovery of copper from spent telecommunication printed circuit boards using an indigenous cyanogenic bacterium

Abstract:In recent years, electronic waste (e-waste) production has increased due to the population's growth and high consumption. As a result of the high concentration of heavy elements in these wastes, their disposal has posed many environmental problems. On the other hand, due to the non-renewability of mineral resources and the presence of valuable elements such as Cu and Au in electronic waste, these wastes are considered secondary minerals for recovering valuable elements. Among electronic waste, recovery of metals from spent telecommunication printed circuit boards (STPCBs) is significant, which has not been addressed despite their high production worldwide. This study isolated an indigenous cyanogenic bacterium from alfalfa field soil. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing results showed that the best strain has 99.8% phylogenetic affinity with Pseudomonas atacamenisis M7DI(T) with the accession number SSBS01000008 with 1459 nucleotides. The effect of the culture medium, initial pH, glycine concentration, and methionine on the cyanide production of the best strain was investigated. The results showed that the best strain could produce 12.3 ppm cyanide in NB medium with an initial pH of 7 and a concentration of glycine and methionine of 7.5 g/L and 7.5 g/L, respectively. The one-step bioleaching method was performed, which led to the recovery of 98.2% of Cu from STPCBs powder after 5 days. Finally, XRD, FTIR, and FE-SEM analyses were performed to investigate the structure of the STPCBs powder before and after the bioleaching process, confirming the high Cu recovery.
An innovative method of recycling metals in printed circuit board (PCB) using solutions from PCB production

Abstract:Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) have both a potentially high resource value and hazardous drawbacks. Meanwhile, large quantities of corrosive waste solutions are generated in PCB production. Existing methods for recycling metals in WPCBs produce high yields but unfortunately produce secondary pollution. In this study, to minimize these disadvantages, a win-win innovative recycling method for WPCBs was developed using waste solutions that are generated in PCB production. Both of the waste solutions - waste tin stripping solution (WTSS) and waste etching solution (WES) - had an enormous capacity to extract Pb, Sn, and Cu. It was suggested that 1 L of WTSS was potentially capable for dissolving solder from 3.6 to 7.2 kg of WPCBs under room temperature, while WES was capable for Cu leaching from 0.13-0.35 kg of WPCBs. Compared with conventional leaching solutions, it was demonstrated that approximately 1 kW h of electricity could be saved from the recycling process when WTSS and WES were used to recycle only 1 kg of WPCBs. The proposed approach can be expected to significantly reduce energy consumption for recycling metals from WPCBs, without additional waste solution generated, and to increase the potential value of WTSS and WES, as they can facilitate the recycling process.
Simultaneous utilization of copper and non-metals from waste integrated circuits for precious metal melting capture and organics thermal detoxification

Abstract:Waste integrated circuits, with underlying resource attributes and environmental risks, are complex in composition. Current processes suffer from high resource inputs, excessive pollutant emissions and incomplete treatment of varied species. Therefore, a comprehensive resource recycling and safe disposal process integrated with precious metal enrichment, non-metal resource utilization, and organic detoxification was proposed. The copper and non-metals from waste ICs served as in-situ precious metal collector, slagging former and reducing agent for alternative to partial chemical inputs. Batch experiments indicated that optimized parameters enabled the recycling efficiencies of 94.3 %, 96.8 % and 98.4 % for copper, gold and silver, respectively. Meanwhile, oxide component, yielded as silicate slag, was synthesized into glass ceramics via high-temperature sintering. Furthermore, organic conversion process revealed that high-temperature smelting catalyzed bromine removal and contaminant detoxification, with decomposed reductive hydrocarbons facilitating metal capture in turn. And the capture mechanism was disclosed form thermodynamics and microdroplet motion perspectives. As process evaluation indicates, proposed recycling route allows remarkable reductions in negative environmental response and economic investment. In this work, metal recycling, waste minimization and pollutant detoxification were attained synergistically without residue, which contributes a novel insight into the disposal of comparable e-wastes.

Abstract:An innovative process integration for the sustainable recovery of critical metals from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) is demonstrated. In the acid pre-treatment of WPCBs, > 95% of highly toxic metals lead and tin could dissolve after 240 min of contact in 4.0 mol L-1 HNO3. Thereafter, the microbial activity of Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans (strain RDB) under intense aeration is found favorable for base metals' liberation. ~92% copper, 89% nickel, and 93% zinc get extracted at the optimal condition of O2-mixed-aeration, 30%; pulp density, 10 g L-1; aeration rate, 0.5 L min-1; sulfur dosage, 2%; temperature, 45 °C; and duration, 21 days. Quantitative separation of base metals is achieved using ketoxime as a function of equilibrium pH that yielding pH0.5 order: Cu (1.45) < Ni (5.7) < Zn (8.1). The residual gold from WPCBs is uniquely leached (~99% efficiency) in brine solution (2.0 mol L-1 NaCl) under the electro-chlorination rate, 0.62 mmol min-1; dissolution pH, 1.0; pulp density, 20 g L-1; temperature, 30 °C; and time, 60 min. Subsequently, gold from brine solution is solvated with tri-butyl-phosphate at pHeq, ≤ 0.5, forming [2(RP=O)·HAuCl4·H2O]¯ complex in the organic phase. Finally, > 99% of high-purity gold is stripped from loaded organic while contacting ammoniacal thiosulfate solution in two-stages of counter-current flow.
Comparative life cycle assessment of copper and gold recovery from waste printed circuit boards: Pyrometallurgy, chemical leaching and bioleaching

Abstract:Printed circuit boards (PCBs) make up a substantial amount of electronic waste (e-waste) generated annually. Waste PCBs contain high quantities of copper and gold in comparison to natural ores. As such, "urban mining" of waste PCBs to recover these metals is of commercial interest. In this work, we used life cycle assessment to compare the environmental impact of four copper and gold recovery processes. We evaluated pyrometallurgy, chemical leaching, and bioleaching, as well as a hybrid leaching process that uses bioleaching to recover copper and chemical leaching to recover gold. Furthermore, we considered differences in environmental impact based on differences in electricity sources. If electricity comes from fossil fuels, the pyrometallurgical process results in the lowest environmental impact in all impact categories studied. If electricity comes from carbon-free sources, the pyrometallurgical process results in the lowest environmental impact in all categories studied except global warming, where the hybrid leaching process results in the lowest impact. In all cases, metal recovery from waste PCBs leads to lower environmental impact than primary metal production. Our goal is to guide e-waste recyclers towards more environmentally sustainable metal recovery processes and to provide knowledge gaps in the field to guide future research.

Abstract:Recycling of metals from end-of-life products (urban mining) has been one of the major targets of long-term environment management, which becomes impressively rewarding if it culminates in the production of technologically significant materials. To this end, a process has been developed for selective separation and recovery of copper (Cu) from printed circuit boards (PCBs) with a novel iminodiacetamide (IDA) resin and its direct upcycling to copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs), which has found immense applications in various futuristic fields such as rocket propellants, semiconductors, battery electrode materials, antifouling agents in ships, antiviral/antibacterial materials, etc. Briefly, depopulated PCBs were first treated chemically for maximum leaching of Cu in aqueous medium (leach liquor). IDA resin was then used for selective separation and recovery of Cu from the acidic leach liquor, with very high loading capacity ∼ 70 mg/g of Cu. Finally, the quantitative recovery of Cu from the stripping solution of IDA resin and direct conversion to CuO NPs (purity >99.5%) were achieved, confirmed through SEM–EDX and XRD techniques. This work thus reports the first full transformation of copper from electronic scraps to high-value material CuO NPs.

Abstract:Obesity has become a pandemic disease causing a variety of lifestyle-related diseases, such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma; therefore obesity has become an important health issue all over the world. Obesity was suggested to cause a chronic liver disease called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and to promote the progression of NASH to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma 30 years ago and this was proven 20 years ago. Today, 1% of the Japanese population is suffering from NASH. Twenty percent of NASH patients, 0.2 million patients, are suggested to develop liver cirrhosis latently in the next decade, and are at a serious risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma. Indeed, diabetes mellitus has become prevalent among the Japanese population and 10% die from chronic liver disease, but few doctors are able to recognize liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with diabetes mellitus. It is a serious health issue to ignore such risk factors that threaten life in Japan. There are many chronic liver diseases with fatty liver, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a chronic liver disease of unknown etiology, affects 14% of the Japanese population today. As NASH is the most progressive form of this disease, it has become a very important health issue to let doctors know how to recognize patients with NAFLD. In this paper, we discuss how to recognize NAFLD, including NASH, in our outpatient clinic.
Copper leaching from ultrasonically treated milled waste printed circuit boards: investigation of parameters optimization and kinetics

Abstract:Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) encompass abundant metals (gold, silver, and copper), along with other harmful materials including brominated epoxy resins, plastics, and heavy metals (lead, mercury, and cadmium). Direct burning and landfilling of WPCBs may cause severe health issues and impair the environment. Therefore, sustainable treatment of WPCBs is necessary to recover valuable metals and remove hazardous materials before disposal. The present work investigates the separation of copper-rich metallic fractions from the WPCBs by the combination of hammer milling and ultrasonic irradiation. Initially, discarded mobile phone PCBs are pre-processed and shortened into 1 × 1 cm2. Downscaled WPCBs are fed into the hammer mill to obtain the fine ground powder. The Powdered WPCBs are further processed through ultrasonic treatment to acquire metal-rich fraction. XRD, SEM-EDS, and ICP/AAS analysis revealed that the current technique can efficiently separate the metal-rich fraction without using toxic solvents. Results show the enhancement of copper fraction from 42.73 to 87 wt. % after ultrasonic treatment of WPCBs ground powder. Further, nitric acid leaching has been implemented to metal-rich fractions, and the parameters have been optimized for copper leaching with the assistance of response surface methodology (RSM) of the design of experiments (DOE). Quantitative dissolution (98.96%) of copper occurred using 3.5 M nitric acid within 3 h at 30 °C with 50 GPL pulp density and 500 rpm agitation speed. Finally, the kinetics of the leaching process were studied to conform the kinetics model. Moreover, the activation energy for diffusion (19.075 kJ/mole) and reaction kinetics model (13.29 kJ/mole) has also been calculated. The low energy consumption due to room temperature pre-treatment and effective leaching ensures the industrial feasibility of the proposed process.

Abstract:The printed circuit boards (PCBs) from electronic waste are important resource, since the PCBs contain precious metals such as gold, copper, tin, silver, platinum and so forth. In addition to the economic point of view, the presence of lead turns this scrap into dangerous to environment. This study was conducted as part of the development of a novel process for selective recovery of copper over tin and lead from printed circuit boards by HBF4 leaching. In previous study, Copper with solder alloy was associated, simultaneously were leached in HBF4 solution using hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant at room temperature. The objective of this study is the separation of copper from tin and lead from Fluoroborate media using CP-150 as an extractant. The influence of organic solvent's concentration, pH, temperature and A/O phase ratio was investigated. The possible extraction mechanism and the composition of the extracted species have been determined. The separation factors for these metals using this agent are reported, while efficient methods for separation of Cu (II) from other metal ions are proposed. The treatment of leach liquor for solvent extraction of copper with CP-150 revealed that 20% CP-150 in kerosene, a 30min period of contact time, and a pH of 3 were sufficient for the extraction of Cu(II) and 99.99% copper was recovered from the leached solution.
