Abstract:Prostate cancer (PC) is the most prevalent malignancy in men, with 604,506 new cases diagnosed yearly worldwide. Maintaining bone health is important during all stages of PC, including patients who experience bone loss from androgen-deprivation therapy and patients who develop bone metastases. Patients with bone metastases often experience severe bone pain and are at increased risk for potentially debilitating skeletal-related events. Bisphosphonates are a well-established treatment option for patients with bone metastases from solid tumors and bone lesions from multiple myeloma. Zoledronic acid (ZOL) is the only bisphosphonate (BP) that has been extensively studied in patients with castration-recurrent PC and is indicated for treating patients with bone metastases from PC in conjunction with standard antineoplastic therapy. This review will examine the breadth of evidence supporting a role for ZOL and emerging therapies in managing patients with PC throughout the disease continuum.

Abstract:Application of soil amendments has been wildly used to increase soil pH and control bacterial wilt. However, little is known about causal shifts in the rhizosphere microbial community of crops, especially when the field naturally harbors the disease of bacterial wilt to tobacco for many years due to long-term continuous cropping and soil acidification. In this study, biochar (CP), lime (LM), oyster shell powder (OS) and no soil amendment additions (Control; CK) were assessed for their abilities to improve the soil acidification, change the composition of rhizosphere soil bacterial communities and thus control tobacco bacterial wilt. The results showed that oyster shell powder significantly increased soil pH by 0.77 and reduced the incidence of tobacco bacterial wilt by 36.67% compared to the control. The Illumina sequencing -based community analysis showed that soil amendment applications affected the composition of rhizosphere bacterial community and increased the richness and diversity. In contrast, the richness and diversity correlated negatively to disease incidence. Using LEfSe analyses, 11 taxa were found to be closely related with disease suppression, in which Saccharibacteria, Aeromicrobium, and Pseudoxanthomonas could be potential indicators of disease suppression. Our results suggested that the suppression of bacterial wilt after the application of soil amendments (especially oyster shell powder) was attributed to the improved soil pH and increased bacterial richness and diversity.

Abstract:Tomato bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum is one of the most destructive soil-borne diseases. Many strategies have been taken to improve soil suppressiveness against this destructive disease, but limited success has been achieved. In this study, a novel bioorganic fertilizer revealed a higher suppressive ability against bacterial wilt compared with several soil management methods in the field over four growing seasons from March 2011 to July 2013. The application of the bioorganic fertilizer significantly (P<0.05) reduced disease incidence of tomato and increased fruit yields in four independent trials. The association among the level of disease incidence, soil physicochemical and biological properties was investigated. The soil treated with the bioorganic fertilizer increased soil pH value, electric conductivity, organic carbon, NH4 +-N, NO3 --N and available K content, microbial activities and microbial biomass carbon content, which were positively related with soil suppressiveness. Bacterial and actinomycete populations assessed using classical plate counts were highest, whereas R. solanacearum and fungal populations were lowest in soil applied with the bioorganic fertilizer. Microbial community diversity and richness were assessed using denaturing gel gradient electrophoresis profile analysis. The soil treated with the bioorganic fertilizer exhibited higher bacterial community diversity but lower fungal community diversity. Redundancy analysis showed that bacterial community diversity and richness negatively related with bacterial wilt suppressiveness, while fungal community richness positively correlated with R. solanacearum population. We concluded that the alteration of soil physicochemical and biological properties in soil treated with the bioorganic fertilizer induced the soil suppressiveness against tomato bacterial wilt.
Acidification suppresses the natural capacity of soil microbiome to fight pathogenic Fusarium infections

Abstract:Soil-borne pathogens pose a major threat to food production worldwide, particularly under global change and with growing populations. Yet, we still know very little about how the soil microbiome regulates the abundance of soil pathogens and their impact on plant health. Here we combined field surveys with experiments to investigate the relationships of soil properties and the structure and function of the soil microbiome with contrasting plant health outcomes. We find that soil acidification largely impacts bacterial communities and reduces the capacity of soils to combat fungal pathogens. In vitro assays with microbiomes from acidified soils further highlight a declined ability to suppress Fusarium, a globally important plant pathogen. Similarly, when we inoculate healthy plants with an acidified soil microbiome, we show a greatly reduced capacity to prevent pathogen invasion. Finally, metagenome sequencing of the soil microbiome and untargeted metabolomics reveals a down regulation of genes associated with the synthesis of sulfur compounds and reduction of key traits related to sulfur metabolism in acidic soils. Our findings suggest that changes in the soil microbiome and disruption of specific microbial processes induced by soil acidification can play a critical role for plant health.

Abstract:Bacterial wilt caused by plant pathogenic Ralstonia spp. is one of the most important diseases affecting the production of many important crops worldwide. In China, a large scientific community has been dedicated to studying bacterial wilt and its causative agent, Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum and R. solanacearum. Most of their work was published in Chinese, which has hindered international communication and collaboration in this field. In this review, we summarize the status of knowledge on geographical distribution, diversity, and host range of Ralstonia spp., as well as, the impact of bacterial wilt on important crops and disease control approaches, in China. We present areas of research and publications by Chinese scientists and propose the promotion of collaborative research within China and with the international community.

Abstract:Soil pH is an important predictor of bacterial community composition and diversity. Examining the effects of pH on diversity, structure, interaction, and function of rhizosphere bacterial communities in acidic crop soils provide valuable information for knowing potential role of rhizosphere bacteria in crop yield. Here, we collected soils from artificial greenhouses and applied Illumina Miseq sequencing, quantitative PCR techniques, multiple ecological analysis methods, including topological analysis and functional profiling to analyze our data and validate our hypotheses. We found that the soil physicochemical properties, species diversity, and rhizosphere bacterial community composition were significantly affected by the degree of soil acidification (pH < 5.5 and pH > 5.5) but not vegetation type. Additionally, bacterial absolute abundance increased with higher pH. The 18 soil samples were clustered into two distinct groups of pH < 5.5 and pH > 5.5 at the OTU level, and soil pH had more of an effect on bacterial community composition compared to the other physicochemical variables. In addition, rhizosphere bacteria might presented relatively less competition for survival in pH < 5.5 soils, and bacterial community functions, including nutrient (i.e., carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulphur) cycling-related enzymes and proteins, were downregulated in more acidic soils (pH < 5.5) based on sequence analysis. To our knowledge, this report is the first to show that pH is a key factor affecting the diversity, structure, interaction, and function of rhizosphere bacterial communities in acidic crop soil in artificial greenhouses. Our findings emphasize that community function and structure of rhizosphere bacteria are closely correlated in more acidic soils, and the decreased crop yield may be correlated with attenuation of the function of the rhizosphere bacterial community.

Abstract:Soil acidification has become increasingly serious due to anthropogenic activities (e.g., fertilization) throughout the world. Examining the effects of soil acidification on bacterial and fungal communities in acidic crop soils provides valuable insights for revealing the potential role of microbes in soil quality and crop yield. Here, a total of 18 samples with pH varied from 4 to 7 were collected from agricultural regions in the Jiaodong Peninsula, Shandong Province, China. High-throughput sequencing analysis was used to determine the composition and diversity of the bacterial and fungal communities. The results revealed that the α-diversity of the bacterial community was significantly decreased as the soil acidification increased, while that of fungal communities exhibited little response to soil acidification, thus indicating that bacteria rather than fungi respond sensitively to soil acidification. Principal component analysis (PCA) and canonical correlations analysis (CCA) further corroborated that pH is an essential predictor for controlling the distribution of microbial communities, and it also could alter other exchangeable base cation (e.g., EH+, EAl3+, EK+, ENa+, ECa2+, and EMg2+) contents to further drive the microbial community patterns.

Abstract:Understanding the response of soil microbial communities to pathogenic Ralstonia solanacearum is crucial for preventing bacterial wilt outbreaks. In this study, we investigated the soil physicochemical and microbial community to assess their impact on the pathogenic R.solanacearum through metagenomics. Our results revealed that certain archaeal taxa were the main contributors influencing the health of plants. Additionally, the presence of the pathogen showed a strong negative correlation with soil phosphorus levels, while soil phosphorus was significantly correlated with bacterial and archaeal communities. We found that the network of microbial interactions in healthy plant rhizosphere soils was more complex compared to diseased soils. The diseased soil network had more linkages, particularly related to the pathogen occurrence. Within the network, the family Comamonadaceae, specifically Ramlibacter_tataouinensis , was enriched in healthy samples and showed a significantly negative correlation with the pathogen. In terms of archaea, Halorubrum , Halorussus_halophilus (family: Halobacteriaceae), and Natronomonas_pharaonis (family: Haloarculaceae) were enriched in healthy plant rhizosphere soils and showed negative correlations with R.solanacearum . These findings suggested that the presence of these archaea may potentially reduce the occurrence of bacterial wilt disease. On the other hand, Halostagnicola_larseniia and Haloterrigena _sp._BND6 (family: Natrialbaceae) had higher relative abundance in diseased plants and exhibited significantly positive correlations with R.solanacearum , indicating their potential contribution to the pathogen's occurrence. Moreover, we explored the possibility of functional gene sharing among the correlating bacterial pairs within the Molecular Ecological Network. Our analysis revealed 468 entries of horizontal gene transfer (HGT) events, emphasizing the significance of HGT in shaping the adaptive traits of plant-associated bacteria, particularly in relation to host colonization and pathogenicity. Overall, this work revealed key factors, patterns and response mechanisms underlying the rhizosphere soil microbial populations. The findings offer valuable guidance for effectively controlling soil-borne bacterial diseases and developing sustainable agriculture practices.

Abstract:Fusarium wilt of Momordica charantia in the greenhouse is one of the most severe crop diseases in Shandong Province, P.R. China. This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms of accumulation and long-term survival of the pathogen in naturally pathogenic soils. Soil physicochemical properties were tested after applying a highly virulent strain of Fusarium wilt to M. charantia in an artificial disease nursery. The functional structure of soil microorganisms was analyzed through amplicon sequencing. The highly virulent strain SG−15 of F. oxysporum f. sp. momordicae was found to cause Fusarium wilt in M. charantia in Shandong Province. The strain SG−15 could not infect 14 non-host crops, including Solanum melongena and Lycopersicon esculentum, but it had varying degrees of pathogenicity towards 11 M. charantia varieties. In the artificial disease nursery for Fusarium wilt of M. charantia, the F. oxysporum was distributed in the soil to a depth of 0–40 cm and was mainly distributed in crop residues at 0–10 cm depth. During crop growth, F. oxysporum primarily grows and reproduces in susceptible host plants, rather than disease-resistant hosts and non-host crops. The colonization of the pathogen of Fusarium wilt significantly changed the soil physicochemical properties, the functional structure of soil microorganisms and the circulation of soil elements such as carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur. Soil pH value, organic matter content, available iron content, available manganese content, FDA hydrolase activity and polyphenol oxidase activity were significantly correlated with the relative abundance of Fusarium wilt pathogens in the soil. In general, this study suggests that susceptible host plants facilitate the accumulation of Fusarium wilt pathogens in the soil. These pathogens can mediate the decomposition process of plant residues, particularly those of diseased plants, and indirectly or directly affect soil’s chemical properties.

Abstract:ABSTRACT To explore the factors influencing the occurrence of bacterial wilt, the differences in the physicochemical properties, microbial community composition and function between rhizosphere soil of tobacco plants with bacterial wilt and healthy plants in the tobacco planting area of Fuzhou City, Jiangxi Province were analyzed and compared. The results showed that the rhizosphere soil of diseased tobacco exhibited significantly reduced levels of exchangeable potassium, water-soluble potassium, nitrate nitrogen, total nitrogen and pH, in comparison to the rhizosphere soil of healthy plants. Conversely, the available phosphorus content of the rhizosphere soil of diseased tobacco was significantly increased. The amount of Ralstonia solanacearum in soil was negatively correlated with pH, nitrate nitrogen and total nitrogen, and positively correlated with exchangeable potassium and water-soluble potassium. A total of 43 genera were significantly different between the two groups of rhizosphere soil, of which 24 genera were enriched in the rhizosphere of healthy plants, including Ideonella , Rhizophagus , Rhizobacter , Altererythrobacter and Ignavibacterium associated with plant disease resistance, Thermodesulfovibrio , Syntrophorhabdus , Syntrophus , Chlorobium , Hydrogenophaga and Limnohabitans associated with soil sulfur metabolism, as well as Ignavibacterium , Ideonella , Derxia and Azohydromonas associated with soil nitrogen cycling. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes functional analysis of the unigenes obtained by metagenomic sequencing also showed that the differential unigenes were significantly enriched in the sulfur metabolism pathway. In addition, the rhizosphere soil of diseased tobacco plants exhibited a higher abundance of antibiotic-producing actinomycetes and an increased load of antibiotic resistance genes compared to that of healthy plants. In general, lower pH value, less content of nitrate nitrogen and total nitrogen, and more content of exchangeable potassium and water-soluble potassium could contribute to onset of bacterial wilt. Twenty-four genera, including Ideonella and Rhizophagus , may construct a healthy microecological network in the rhizosphere of tobacco plants. All these factors may interact with each other to control the development of bacterial wilt. This complicated interaction network needs to be explored further. IMPORTANCE Previous studies have mainly focused on the differences in microbial species composition between healthy and diseased soils, but the differences in microbial community functions between two types of soil have not been well characterized. In this study, soil samples in diseased and healthy plant rhizospheres were collected for physicochemical property testing and metagenomic sequencing. We focused on analyzing the differences in physicochemical properties and microbial community functions between these soils, as well as the correlation between these factors and pathogen content. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for further understanding the occurrence of tobacco bacterial wilt in the field.

The exacerbation of soil acidification correlates with structural and functional succession of the soil microbiome upon agricultural intensification

Abstract:Agricultural intensification driven by land-use changes has caused continuous and cumulative soil acidification (SA) throughout the global agroecosystem. Microorganisms mediate acid-generating reactions; however, the microbial mechanisms responsible for exacerbating SA feedback remain largely unknown. To determine the microbial community composition and putative function associated with SA, we conducted a metagenomic analysis of soils across a chronosequence that has elapsed since the conversion of rice-wheat (RW) to rice-vegetable (RV) rotations. Compared to RW rotations, soil pH decreased by 0.50 and 1.56 units (p < 0.05) in response to 10-year and 20-year RV rotations, respectively. Additionally, acid saturation ratios were increased by 7.3% and 36.2% (p < 0.05), respectively. The loss of microbial beta-diversity was a key element that contributed to the exacerbation of SA in the RV. Notably, the 20-year RV-enriched microbial taxa were more hydrogen (H+)-, aluminium (Al3+)-, and nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N) -dependent and contained more genera exhibiting dehydrogenation functions than did RW-enriched taxa. "M00115, M00151, M00417, and M00004" and "M00531 and M00135" that are the "proton-pumping" and "proton-consuming" gene modules, respectively, were linked to the massive recruitment of acid-dependent biomarkers in 20-year RV soils, particularly Rhodanobacter, Gemmatirosa, Sphingomonas, and Streptomyces. Collectively, soils in long-term RV rotations were highly acidified and acid-sensitive, as the enrichment of microbial dehydrogenation genes allowing for soil buffering capacity is more vulnerable to H+ loading and consequently promotes the colonization of more acid-tolerant and acidogenic microbes, and ultimately provide new clues for researchers to elucidate the interaction between SA and the soil microbiome.

Abstract:Bacterial wilt, which is a major soil-borne disease with widespread occurrence, poses a severe danger in the field of tobacco production. However, there is very limited knowledge on bacterial wilt-induced microecological changes in the tobacco root system and on the interaction between Ralstonia solanacearum and fungal communities in the rhizosphere soil. Thus, in this study, changes in fungal communities in the rhizosphere soil of tobaccos with bacterial wilt were studied by 18S rRNA gene sequencing. The community composition of fungi in bacterial wilt-infected soil and healthy soil in two tobacco areas (Gengma and Boshang, Lincang City, Yunnan Province, China) was studied through the paired comparison method in July 2019. The results showed that there were significant differences in fungal community composition between the rhizosphere soil of diseased plants and healthy plants. The changes in the composition and diversity of fungal communities in the rhizosphere soil of tobaccos are vital characteristics of tobaccos with bacterial wilt, and the imbalance in the rhizosphere microecosystem of tobacco plants may further aggravate the disease.

Acid Soil Improvement Enhances Disease Tolerance in Citrus Infected by Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus

Abstract:Huanglongbing (HLB) is a devastating citrus disease that has caused massive economic losses to the citrus industry worldwide. The disease is endemic in most citrus-producing areas of southern China, especially in the sweet orange orchards where soil acidification has intensified. In this work, we used lime as soil pH amendment to optimize soil pH and enhance the endurance capacity of citrus against Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas). The results showed that regulation of soil acidity is effective to reduce the occurrence of new infections and mitigate disease severity in the presence of HLB disease. We also studied the associated molecular mechanism and found that acid soil improvement can (i) increase the root metabolic activity and up-regulate the expression of ion transporter-related genes in HLB-infected roots, (ii) alleviate the physiological disorders of sieve tube blockage of HLB-infected leaves, (iii) strengthen the citrus immune response by increasing the expression of genes involved in SAR and activating the salicylic acid signal pathway, (iv) up-regulate 55 proteins related to stress/defence response and secondary metabolism. This study contributes to a better understanding of the correlation between environment factors and HLB disease outbreaks and also suggests that acid soil improvement is of potential value for the management of HLB disease in southern China.

Abstract:Abstract Background: Ralstonia solanacearum is one of the most notorious soil-borne phytopathogens. It causes a severe wilt disease with deadly effects on many economically important crops. The microbita of disease-suppressive soils are thought that they can contribute to the disease resistance of crop plants, thus, to conduct the microbial community and their interaction characteristics between suppressive soil (SS) and conducive soil (CS) will help to understand resistance mechanism. Here, the bacterial community structure, correlation analysis with soil chemical properties, interaction network of SS (nearly no disease in three years), and CS (suffered heavy bacterial wilt disease) were analyzed. Results: Compared with CS, a higher bacterial community diversity index was found in SS , and the relative abundance of main genera Bacillus , Gaiellales , Roseiflexus , Gemmatimonadaceae , Nocardioides , and Anaerolineacear reached significant levels. Redundancy analysis at the genus level indicated that the available phosphate played a key role in the bacterial community distribution, and its role was negatively correlated with soil pH, organic matter content, alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen, and available potassium contents. Interaction network analysis further demonstrated that greater diversity at the genus level existed in the SS network and formed a stable network. Additionally, the species of Mycobacterium , Cyanobacteria , and Rhodobiaceae are the key components that sustain the network stability. Seven clusters of orthologous groups exhibited significant differences between SS and CS. Moreover, 55 bacterial strains with distinct antagonistic activities to R. solancearum were isolated and identified. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that the bacterial diversity and interaction network differed between the CS and SS samples, providing a good foundation in the study of bacterial wilt.
Resistance to Bacterial Wilt Caused by Ralstonia Solanacearum Depends on the Nutrient Condition in Soil and Applied Fertilizers: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Soil nutrient supply and resistance to pathogen invasion are critical to crop yield during agricultural production. Crop production is often hampered by co-occurring nutrient and pathogen stresses, but the relationship between soil nutrient status and disease suppression remains unclear. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis based on 406 observations from 55 studies to decipher the relationships between soil nutrient supply and disease suppression against bacterial wilt disease caused by R. solanacearum. We found that the contents of soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), available potassium (AK) and available phosphorus (AP) were significantly higher in relatively disease suppressive soils than in conducive soils. Soil AP showed a significantly negative correlation with both crop disease incidence (DI) and disease severity (DSI). SOC was significantly and negatively correlated with DI and DSI in general, but a positive correlation with DI was found when SOC content was higher than 1.3%. Then for nutrient stoichiometry in soil, we found that the ratio of carbon to nitrogen (C/N), maximum to 22, was significantly and negatively correlated to the DI, but was positively correlated to DSI when C/N was higher than about 30. And the ratio of TN to AP (TN/AP) showed significantly positive correlations with both DI and DSI in soil. Further in applied organic fertilizer, the ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus (N/P) was significantly and negatively correlated with DI when N/P was lower than about 5, but was positively correlated with DI when higher than that. Our results demonstrated that the quantity and stoichiometry of phosphorus, organic carbon and nitrogen in soil and applied fertilizer, notably the prevention of nutrient deficiency and the balance of different nutrients, play an important role in supporting soil suppressiveness to R. solanacearum wilt disease, and this implied a possible trade-off between nutrient acquisition and pathogen defense in soil ecosystems.

Abstract:Excessive application of mineral fertilizers has accelerated soil acidification in China, affecting crop production when the pH drops below a critical value. However, the contributions of natural soil acidification, induced by leaching of bicarbonate, and anthropogenic causes of soil acidification, induced by nitrogen (N) transformations and removal of base cations over acid anions, are not well quantified. In this study, we quantified soil acidification rates, in equivalents (eq) of acidity, by assessing the inputs and outputs of all major cations and anions, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, ammonium, nitrate, bicarbonate, sulphate, phosphate and chloride, for 13 long-term experimental sites in southern China. The acidification rates strongly varied among fertilizer treatments and with the addition of animal manure. Bicarbonate leaching was the dominant acid production process in calcareous soils (23 keq ha −1 yr −1 ) and in non-calcareous paddy soils (9.6 keq ha −1 yr −1 ), accounting for 80 % and 68 % of the total acid production rate, respectively. The calcareous soils were strongly buffered, and acidification led no or a limited decline in pH. In contrast, N transformations were the most important driver for soil acidification at one site with upland crops on a non-calcareous soil, accounting for 72 % of total acid production rate of 8.4 keq ha −1 yr −1 . In this soil, the soil pH considerably decreased being accompanied by a substantial decline in exchangeable base cation. Reducing the N surplus decreased the acidification rate with 10 to 54 eq per kg N surplus with the lowest value occurring in paddy soils and the highest in the upland soil. The use of manure, containing base cations, partly mitigated the acidifying impact of N fertilizer inputs and crop removal, but enhanced phosphorus (P) accumulation. Combining mineral fertilizer, manure and lime in integrative management strategies can mitigate soil acidification and minimize N and P losses.

Abstract:Most soils in China have acidified to some degree in the past decades.This increase in soil acidity has a negative impact on crop yield,agricultural product quality,and biodiversity.Since the 1950s,Chinese scientists have performed lots of work on acid soils and the achievements are significant.However,there are still some issues in the use of acid soils including the inexact distribution of acid soils in China,controversial explanation for soil acidification mechanisms in cropland,lack of acid soil-tolerant crop cultivars,unclear critical pH for optimal plant growth,and poor applicability of products and techniques in acid soils,which limits acid soil use.Considering these issues,a new soil pH map of China based on the recently obtained soil data was drawn.The area of acid soils with pH values lower than pH 6.5 is about 3.11 million km2,accounting for 32.4%of the total national land area.About 60.3%,23.3%,and 16.4%of these acid soils are distributed in the south red and yellow soil region,northeast region,and other regions in China,respectively.The mechanisms for soil acidification under natural conditions and by acid deposition are much clearer,but whether nitrogen fertilizer induces cropland soil acidification is controversial.The relationship between soil acidification and nitrogen fertilizer is very complicated,depending on the production and consumption of H+ during soil nitrogen transformation.Large amounts of nitrate loss through leaching may be the main mechanism for soil acidification induced by nitrogen fertilizer,so it is suggested that the inhibition of soil nitrification can be used as an effective measure to alleviate soil acidification,especially in south acid soil regions of China with dual effects of high nitrogen use efficiency and low nitrogen loss.Soil acidification has various negative effects,including inhibition of plant growth,reduction of agricultural product quality,and damage to ecological environments.Nitrogen fertilizer induced serious soil acidification and remarkably decreased crop yield in some red soil regions of south China.In addition,increased soil heavy metal bioavailability,pests,and diseases by soil acidification have become important issues in recent years.Plants and microbes have developed external and internal mechanisms to tolerate various stressful factors such as aluminum toxicity,phosphorus deficiency,and manganese toxicity co-existing in acid soils.Nevertheless,how to apply these mechanisms to the improvement of crop productivity in acid soils remains a huge challenge.Four strategies are proposed for the improvement and use of acid soils:(1)the improvement strategies for acid soils should be implemented according to soil requirements in different districts,acidity grades,and soil types;(2)the same importance for improving soil acidity and fertility should be accorded to all acid soils;(3)the combined application of organic and chemical fertilizers should be encouraged;and(4)the development of agriculture with local acid soil characteristics should be the new focus.Furthermore,six research directions to be strengthened in the future are suggested:(1)develop new products for the improvement of acid soils;(2)clarify the critical pH for optimal growth of different crops;(3)research efficient N application techniques for reducing soil acidification;(4)emphasize the role of micro-elements in plants in acid soils;(5)breed acid soil-tolerant crop cultivars;and(6)predict soil acidification trend in the following period.Provided the national soil acidification trend,the Chinese government has begun to stop soil acidification in 20 counties of 15 provinces since 2023.At the same time,several national projects related to acid soils are being performed and/or will be approved.With the implementation of these projects,soil acidification in China will be effectively controlled,and the quality and productivity of acid soils will be greatly improved.This will lay a solid foundation for ensuring food security.
Characteristics of soil acidification and its influencing factors in Shandong province

Abstract:Soil acidification can change the configuration of soil nutrients, affect soil biological activity, so as to affect the growth and development of crops, and bring a series of ecological environmental problems. Soil acidification was a major problem in intensive Chinese agriculture systems. This research was carried out to investigate the soil acidification in Shandong province and provide scientific basis for improving the soil quality using statistical and spatial analytical methods. The soil data collected from the soil testing formula fertilization program in Shandong province were compared with those collected from the second national soil survey. Soil acidification of Shandong province was showed with pH spatial distribution map using inverse distance weighted in ArcGIS. Soil acidification in different regions, land use types, and soil types was analyzed. Results showed that the soil in Shandong province was mainly weak-acidic, neutral and weak-alkaline. The average of pH value was 7.1 and the acidified soil area was 1.26 million hectares accounted for 8.13% of the province. Compared to the second national soil survey data, the percentage of soil acidification area was increased by 8.07%. The soil pH value of Shandong province decreased from west to east and from north to south gradually. The acidification soil was mainly located in the eastern and southern regions of the province, especially in Weihai, Yantai, Rizhao, Qingdao and Linyi city. The soil acidification of Weihai city was the most serious, accounting for 67.94% of the city’s soil area. Under different agricultural land use, the soil pH averages of farmland, garden and forestry decreased in turn. The soil acidification of tea garden was the most serious in garden, while the mulberry garden was the least. The soil acidification of vegetable field was the most serious in farmland, while the cropland was the least. As to different soil groups, the fluvio-aquatic soil was mainly weak-alkaline, accounting for 67.87% of this soil group points. The cinnamon soil, lime concretion black soil, paddy soil were mainly neutral, accounting for 50.66%, 36.54% and 54.07% of these three soil group points, respectively. The skeletal soil and brown earth were mainly weak-acidic, accounting for 38.90% and 41.22% of these two soil group points, respectively. The soil pH averages of fluvio-aquatic soil, cinnamon soil, lime concretion black soil, paddy soil, skeletal soil and brown earth decreased in turn. The soil acidification of brown earth was the most serious, while fluvio-aquatic soil was the least acid. The soil acidification in Shandong province showed an increasingly serious trend may due to the natural geographic and climatic conditions of local environment. Additionally, other possible factors such as different land use types, unreasonable fertilizations and managements were also accountable. By adjusting soil pH value, the contents of soil nutrients could be controlled and the growth of crops could be promoted.
