Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) porous N-doped carbon nanoflake structures decorated with in situ formed Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NCNS) have been synthesized for the first time by a feasible salt-assisted polymer blowing-up method. The 3D porous carbon materials can be an effective lithium host for the application of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) in addressing the challenging issues of the growth of lithium dendrites and the uncontrollable formation of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). The 3D hosts can effectively restrain the growth of Li dendrites by trapping metallic Li in the matrix as well as decreasing local current. Ag nanoparticles act as heterogeneous nucleation sites because of the low nucleation overpotential, and therefore, spatial control of Li metal is realized. The as-fabricated Ag-NCNS electrode presents a dendrite-free plating morphology and long-term cycling stability with the Coulombic efficiency maintained at more than 98% for 200 cycles at 0.5 mA cm(-2) with a cycling capacity of 1.0 mA h cm(-2). In symmetric cells, the Ag-NCNS/Li electrode exhibits much lower voltage hysteresis and stable cycling performance for more than 2000 h.
Uniform Lithium Nucleation Guided by Atomically Dispersed Lithiophilic CoNx Sites for Safe Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:The mossy lithium dendrite growth during repeated lithium plating/stripping induces low Coulombic efficiency, poor lifespan, and safety concerns of working lithium metal batteries. Herein, atomically dispersed CoNx-doped graphene is exploited as a host to accommodate dendrite-free lithium deposits. The coordination between Co and N in the conductive matrix can effectively regulate the local electronic structure, and thereby enhance the adsorption of lithium ions and promote the following nucleation process. Meanwhile, the doped N facilitates high dispersion of Co atoms into graphene through the Co-N coordination bond. The strong lithiophilicity provided by N coordinated with Co promises a uniform lithium nucleation behavior, further contributing to the smooth lithium deposition morphology. These characteristics afford a superhigh Coulombic efficiency of 99.2% at 2.0 mA cm(-2) (approximate to 400 cycles) and 5.0 mA cm(-2) (350 cycles), and 98.2% at 10.0 mA cm(-2) (200 cycles) with a capacity of 2.0 mAh cm(-2). LiFePO4|CoNC-Li full cells deliver a long lifespan of 340 cycles at 1.0 C (240 cycles for routine cells). This offers fresh insights into effectively regulating the lithiophilic chemistry of lithium metal host toward uniform nucleation and growth of lithium deposits in working high-energy-density batteries.
Mesoporous Graphene Hosts for Dendrite-Free Lithium Metal Anode in Working Rechargeable Batteries

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal anode has received extensive attentions due to its ultrahigh theoretical capacity and the most negative electrode potential. However, dendrite growth severely impedes the practical applications of the Li metal anode in rechargeable batteries. In this contribution, a mesoporous graphene with a high specific surface area was synthesized to host the Li metal anode. The mesoporous graphene host (MGH) has a high specific surface area (2090 m 2 /g), which affords free space and an interconnected conductive pathway for Li plating and stripping, thus alleviating the volume variation and reducing the generation of dead Li during repeated cycles. More importantly, the high specific surface area of MGH efficiently reduces the local current density of the electrode, which favors a uniform Li nucleation and plating behavior, rendering a dendrite-free deposition morphology at a low overpotential. These factors synergistically boost the Li utilization (90.1% vs. 70.1% for Cu foil) and life span (150 cycles vs. 100 cycles for Cu foil) with a low polarization of MGH electrode at an ultrahigh current of 15.0 mA/cm 2 . The as-prepared MGH can provide fresh insights into the electrode design of the Li metal anode operating at high rates.

Abstract:Lithium metal anode (LMA) is puzzled by the serious issues corresponding to infinite volume change and notorious lithium dendrite during long-term stripping/plating process. Herein, the transition metal nitrides array with outstanding lithiophilicity, including CoN, VN, and Ni3N, are decorated onto carbon framework as "nests" to uniform Li nucleation and guide Li metal deposition. These transition metal nitrides with excellent conductivity can guarantee the fast electron transport, therefore maintain a stable interface for Li reduction. In addition, the designed multi-dimensional structure of metal nitride array decorated carbon framework can effectively regulate the growth of Li metal during the stripping/plating process. Of note, attributing to the lattice-matching between CoN and Li metal, the composite Li/CoN@CF anode exhibits ultra-stable cycling performance in symmetrical cells (over 4000 h@1 mA cm(-2) with 1 mAh cm(-2) and 1000h@20 mA cm(-2) with 20 mAh cm(-2)). The assembled full cells based on Li/CoN@CF composite anode, LiFePO4 or S as cathodes, deliver excellent cycling stability and rate capability. This strategy provides an effective approach to develop a stable lithium metal anode for lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:The uncontrollable growth of lithium (Li) dendrites seriously impedes practical applications of Li metal batteries. Various lithiophilic conductive frameworks, especially carbon hosts, are used to guide uniform Li nucleation and thus deliver a dendrite-free composite anode. However, the lithiophilic nature of these carbon hosts is poorly understood. Herein, the lithiophilicity chemistry of heteroatom-doped carbon is investigated through both first principles calculations and experimental verifications to guide uniform Li nucleation. The electronegativity, local dipole, and charge transfer are proposed to reveal the lithiophilicity of doping sites. Li bond chemistry further deepens the understanding of lithiophilicity. The O-doped and O/B-co-doped carbons exhibit the best lithiophilicity among single-doped and co-doped carbons, respectively. The excellent lithiophilicity achieved by O-doping carbon is further validated by Li nucleation overpotential measurement. This work uncovers the lithiophilicity chemistry of heteroatom-doped carbons and affords a mechanistic guidance to Li metal anode frameworks for safe rechargeable batteries.
Genetic parameters for large-scale behavior traits and type traits in Charolais beef cows.

Abstract:In the last decades, beef cattle breeding mainly focused on improving production and reproduction traits. Nowadays, there is a growing interest to include behavior and type traits in the breeding goal. There is an interest in behavior as it is associated with human safety and workability and in type traits as they might be associated with longevity of cows. The objective of the current study was to estimate the heritability for behavior and type traits in Charolais and to estimate the genetic correlations among these traits. Behavior traits, including aggressiveness at parturition, aggressiveness during gestation period, and maternal care, were scored by farmers using an on-farm recording system to enable large-scale collection of phenotypes. Type traits, including udder traits ( = 3), teat traits (3), feet and leg traits (5), and locomotion (1), were scored by 10 trained classifiers. Data was available on 6,649 cows in parity 1 to 12 and located in 380 herds. Results showed that differences between herds explained up to 23% of the total phenotypic variance in behavior traits. This might be due to differences in management or to consistent differences in scoring between farmers. Aggressiveness at parturition had higher heritability (0.19) and higher genetic coefficient of variation (CV = 11%) than aggressiveness during gestation ( = 0.06 and CV = 4%) and maternal care ( = 0.02 and CV = 2%). Heritabilities for udder traits (0.14 to 0.20) and teat traits (0.17 to 0.35) were higher than for feet and leg traits (0.02 to 0.19). Genetic coefficients of variation for udder and teat traits were also higher (up to 21%) than for feet and leg traits (up to 11%). Strong genetic correlations were found between behavior traits (with absolute values from 0.71 to 0.98). The genetic correlations indicate that it is difficulty to simultaneously improve maternal care and reduce aggressiveness. We concluded that there are good opportunities to implement selection for improved udder and teat traits and against aggressiveness at parturition using a simple on-farm recording system of behavior.

Abstract:Nitrogen‐doped graphene mesh (NGM) has been developed as a novel host for Li metal anodes (LMAs), where the lithiophilic N dopants enable uniform Li nucleation, and the abundant nanopores serve as shortcuts for facilitating Li ion transport. These design features contribute to the excellent cycling stability of LMAs, even under the conditions of high current rates and large areal capacities. Hosts hold great prospects for addressing the dendrite growth and volume expansion of the Li metal anode, but Li dendrites are still observable under the conditions of high deposition capacity and/or high current density. Herein, a nitrogen‐doped graphene mesh (NGM) is developed, which possesses a conductive and lithiophilic scaffold for efficient Li deposition. The abundant nanopores in NGM can not only provide sufficient room for Li deposition, but also speed up Li ion transport to achieve a high‐rate capability. Moreover, the evenly distributed N dopants on the NGM can guide the uniform nucleation of Li so that to inhibit dendrite growth. As a result, the composite NGM@Li anode shows satisfactory electrochemical performances for Li–S batteries, including a high capacity of 600 mAh g−1 after 300 cycles at 1 C and a rate capacity of 438 mAh g−1 at 3 C. This work provides a new avenue for the fabrication of graphene‐based hosts with large areal capacity and high‐rate capability for Li metal batteries.

Abstract:Lithium metal constitutes promising anode materials but suffers from dendrite growth. Lithiophilic host materials are highly considered for achieving uniform lithium deposition. Precise construction of lithiophilic sites with desired structure and homogeneous distribution significantly promotes the lithiophilicity of lithium hosts but remains a great challenge. In this contribution, a framework porphyrin (POF) material with precisely constructed lithiophilic sites in regard to chemical structure and geometric position is employed as the lithium host to address the above issues for dendrite-free lithium metal anodes. The extraordinary lithiophilicity of POF even beyond lithium nuclei validated by DFT simulations and lithium nucleation overpotentials affords a novel mechanism of favorable lithium nucleation to facilitate uniform nucleation and inhibit dendrite growth. Consequently, POF-based anodes demonstrate superior electrochemical performances with high Coulombic efficiency over 98%, reduced average voltage hysteresis, and excellent stability for 300 cycles at 1.0 mA cm−2, 1.0 mAh cm−2 superior to both Cu and graphene anodes. The favorable lithium nucleation mechanism on POF materials inspires further investigation of lithiophilic electrochemistry and development of lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Uncontrolled dendrites resulting from nonuniform lithium (Li) nucleation/growth and Li volume expansion during charging cause serious safety problems for Li anode-based batteries. Here the coating of nickel foam with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) to have a 3D current collector (g-C3N4@Ni foam) for dendrite-free Li metal anodes is reported. The lithiophilic g-C3N4 coupled with the 3D framework is demonstrated to be highly effective for promoting the uniform deposition of Li and suppressing the formation of dendrites. Both density functional theory calculations and experimental studies indicate the formation of a micro-electric field resulting from the tri-s-triazine units of g-C3N4, which induces numerous Li nuclei during the initial nucleation stage, effectively guiding the following Li growth on the 3D Ni foam to be well distributed. Furthermore, the 3D porous framework is favorable for absorbing any volume change and stabilizing the solid-electrolyte interphase layer during repeated Li plating/stripping. As such, a Li metal anode based on the g-C3N4@Ni foam has a remarkable electrochemical performance with a high Coulombic efficiency (98% retention after 300 cycles), an ultralong lifespan up to 900 h, as well as a low overpotential (<15 mV at 1.0 mA cm(-2)) at a Li deposition of 9.0 mA h cm(-2).
Ultrahigh density nucleation leading to extraordinary long-cycle dendrite-free Li metal deposition

Abstract:Li metal is the prospective candidate of next generation anode materials. However, the growth of dendritic Li during electrochemical cycling has severely hindered the practical application of rechargeable Li-metal batteries. Herein, "seaweed" graphene paper (SGP) is designed for 3D matrix of Li metal anode to address the growth of dendrites. SGP has abundantly exposed edges of graphene sheets and realizes ultrahigh density nucleation. Compared with nonuniform lithium deposition on parallelly stacked GP which has been observed by in-situ scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical deposition behavior of Li in SGP manifests as uniformly distributed granular lithium. Significant decrease of nucleation barrier can be observed during the dendrite-free deposition. With the elimination of dendritic Li growth and excellent stability of SGP host, the lithium anode based on SGP can run over 2500 cycles without short circuit and exhibits low voltage hysteresis. When matched with cathode LiCoO2, the full battery also presents stable cycling. There is no trace of lithium dendrite even after 1200 cycles which proves continuously regulating effect on lithium dendrites by SGP host. This work further develops potential application of graphene materials in the Li anode with high reversibility for stable cycling Li metal batteries.

Abstract:Lithium metal is among the most promising anode candidates of high-energy-density batteries. However, the formed dendrites result in low Coulombic efficiency and serious security issues. Designing lithiophilic sites is one of the effective strategies to control Li deposition. Herein, we propose a three-dimensional lithiophilic N-rich carbon nanofiber with the decoration of ZnO granules as a protective layer for a dendrite-free lithium metal anode. Theoretical evaluation indicates the synergistic effects of lithiophilic ZnO and N-containing functional groups enhance lithium adsorption and trigger uniform deposition. With the lithiophilic interlayer, the lithium deposition overpotential is only ∼20, 50, and 74 mV at 1, 3, and 6 mA cm-2, respectively, which are much lower than those without the functional interlayer (∼55, 130, and 238 mV). The average Coulombic efficiency of lithium stripping and plating is up to ∼97.4% (94.0% for that without the interlayer) at 0.5 mA cm-2. Meanwhile, the Li|LiFePO4 full cell with the superlithiophilic interlayer demonstrates a high capacity retention rate of 99.6% (91.0% for that without the interlayer) over 200 cycles at 1 C. The introduction of the lithiophilic interphase could provide a convenient strategy and guidance to design the configuration for the practical application of Li metal batteries.
Ultrathin graphitic C3N4 lithiophilic nanosheets regulating Li+ flux for lithium metal batteries

Abstract:Uncontrollable dendrite growth hinders the direct use of lithium metal anode in batteries even though it has the highest energy density of all anode materials. Li and N atoms have strong interaction and could form Li–N bond, promising for regulating Li-ion flux during the plating/stripping process. Herein, we successfully prepared ultrathin graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets with a thickness of ~ 1 nm and formed a g-C3N4 thin layer over the lithium metal anode. The abundant nitrogen species within g-C3N4 nanosheets could form Li–N bonds to powerfully stabilize the lithium-ion flux and enhance the affinity of electrodes with electrolytes. On top of that, the thin layer could act as an artificial solid electrolyte interface (SEI) to suppress lithium dendrite growth and enable stable Li plating/stripping over 350 h at a high current density of 5 mA cm−2 with a low overpotential of about 50 mV. The reported work demonstrates a promising strategy of the functional artificial SEI design for Li metal anodes.

Abstract:Flexible energy storage devices are of great importance for the rapid growth of flexible electronic devices. Metallic lithium is considered a core anode material in high energy density rechargeable batteries because of its high theoretical specific energy density, the lowest redox potential, and high mechanical flexibility. However, safety issues and a short cycle life induced by lithium dendrites restrict the practical uses of lithium metal batteries. Here we described a nitrogen. doped graphene/lithium metal composite as an anode, in which the Li metal nucleation and growth was guided by doped heteroatoms in the graphene framework. Abstract:Lithium metal is considered to be the most promising anode material for the next-generation rechargeable batteries. However, the uniform and dendrite-free deposition of Li metal anode is hard to achieve, hindering its practical applications. Herein, a lightweight, free-standing and nitrogen-doped carbon nanofiber-based 3D structured conductive matrix (NCNF), which is characterized by a robust and interconnected 3D network with high doping level of 9.5 at%, is prepared by electrospinning as the current collector for Li metal anode. Uniform Li nucleation with reduced polarization and dendrite-free Li deposition are achieved because the NCNF with high nitrogen-doping level and high conductivity provide abundant and homogenous metallic Li nucleation and deposition sites. Excellent cycling stability with high coulombic efficiency are realized. The Li plated NCNF was paired with LiFePO 4 to assemble the full battery, also showing high cyclic stability.

Abstract:Li metal, possessing advantages of high theoretical specific capacity and low electrochemical potential, is regarded as the most promising anode material for next-generation batteries. However, despite decades of intensive research, its practical application is still hindered by safety hazard and low Coulombic efficiency, which is primarily caused by dendritic Li deposition. To address this issue, restraining dendrite growth at the nucleation stage is deemed as the most effective method. By utilizing the difference of electronegativity between boron atoms and carbon atoms, carbon atoms around boron atoms in boron-doped graphene (BG) turn into lithiophilic sites, which can enhance the adsorption capacity to Li+ at the nucleation stage. Consequently, an ultralow overpotential of 10 mV at a current density of 0.5 mA/cm2 and a high average Coulombic efficiency of 98.54% over more than 140 cycles with an areal capacity of 2 mAh/cm2 at a current density of 1 mA/cm2 were achieved. BG-Li|LiFePO4 full cells delivered a long lifespan of 480 cycles at 0.5 C and excellent rate capability. This work provides a novel method for rational design of dendrite-free Li metal batteries by regulating nucleation process.

Abstract:Lithium metal anode has attracted soaring attention for high energy batteries. However, uncontrollable growth of dendritic Li and high chemical reactivity with electrolyte incur serious safety issues, hindering its practical applications. Carbon materials and their composites with controllable structures and properties, have been explored to address these issues and show great potential for lithium anode protection as stable scaffolds or Li storage reservoirs. However, the study of heterogeneous nucleation and growth of Li on carbon surfaces, especially on the basal plane of graphite layers, which is the dominating surface for graphene, carbon nanotube, and many other advanced carbon materials, remains empty, attributing to the lack of a perfect (planar and clean) deposition substrate. Herein, we adopt a single-layer graphene grown on Cu foil as an ideal Li plating substrate to reveal the fundamental behavior of Li metal nucleation and growth on carbon surface for the first time. We demonstrate that single-layer graphene on Cu foil, with nearly perfect structure, has a higher energy barrier for Li nucleation than Cu. Thus, it is more likely to form isolated and thicker dendrite layer on the carbon basal plane, and continuous dendrite was formed easily from Li nuclei even at a low Li deposited capacity of 30 µA h cm−2. Thereby, carbon materials with basal plane-dominated structures are proved lithiophobic and not suitable for the matrix of Li-metal anode. Our approach could lead to the realization of fundamental understanding of Li metal heterogeneous nucleation and growth on carbon surface with various electronic properties.
Oxygen and Nitrogen Co-Doped Porous Carbon Granules Enabling Dendrite-Free Lithium Metal Anode

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal anode is one of the most promising candidates for next-generation storage system due to its high theorectical capacity. However, the uncontrollable growth of Li dendrites still incurs serious safety issues and poor electrochemical performances, hindering the practical application of Li metal anode. Herein, oxygen and nitrogen co-doped porous carbon granules (ONPCGs) with high specific surface area (2396 m(2) g(-1)) made from polyacrylonitrile powder were used as the host material for Li plating. The lithiophilic oxygen and nitrogen-containing functional groups could guide a uniform Li nucleation deposition, and the high specific surface area of ONPCGs could lower the regional electrical field effectively, boosting stable and homogeneous Li plating. Therefore, the ONPCG modified electrode delivered a stable Li plating/stripping with high Coulombic efficiencies > 99% for over 350 cycles at a current of 2 mA cm(-2) and Li capacity of 2 mAh cm(-2), with a Coulombic efficiency of 96.4% after 130 cycles at a current of 20 mA cm(-2). Even at exceptional high current density of 30 mA cm(-2), it could stably being cycled for over 110 cycles. Furthermore, the full cells, using sulfurized carbon as cathode and ONPCGs@Li as anode, could also demonstrate excellent cycle and rate performances.

Abstract:Lithium metal has attracted great attention as an ideal battery anode. However, non-uniform Li deposition leads to lithium dendrites, poor cycling performance, and safety hazards, thus hindering the commercial application of lithium metal anode. Herein, we present a new structure obtained by a facile chemical doping of 3-dimensional graphene (3DG) with Triethyloxonium hexachloroantimonate (OA) to guide uniform Li deposition. The created OA-3DG scaffold lowered the local current density with increased electrical conductivity and regulated Li deposition with enabled intermolecular interactions. All this facilitated homogenous Li nucleation and its controlled deposition. It was found that the initial homogenous nucleus layer regulated the following uniform Li growth, resulting in a dendrite-free anode. Benefiting from such favorable Li growth behavior, the doped 3DG endowed the lithium anode with long cycling stability of over 900 cycles along with a low overpotential (30 mV at a current density of 3 mA cm -2 ) in a symmetric Li/Li cell configuration. This significantly improved the performance of the created lithium-sulfur full cells, showing only 0.24% capacity reduction over 300 cycles.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) has been widely studied as a promising anode material for secondary batteries because of its excellent performance. However, the severe issue of dendrites must be solved for manufacturing safe and sustainable batteries. The proper selection and design of three-dimensional (3D) current collectors are of great significance for regulating the formation of Li dendrites. Here, 3D stable lithium metal anodes were prepared by growing N-doped carbon nanotubes on the surface of carbon cloth (CC). Experimental results reveal that the presence of carbon nanotubes increases the specific surface area of carbon cloth, and the local current density is effectively reduced. Nitrogen doping significantly enhances the lithiophilicity of CC, which is conducive to reversible Li plating and stripping. The formation of dendrite can be greatly inhibited on the 3D Li composite electrodes, thus leading to steady voltage curves at current densities of 10 mA cm–2 and 3 mAh cm–2 for 300 h. Furthermore, a full cell assembled with this electrode and a commercial high-load (120 g m–2) LiFePO4 exhibits excellent cycle stability with a capacity retention rate of 83.4% after 650 cycles at 1 C and excellent rate performance. These results prove the potential for the commercialization of Li metal anodes.
