Abstract:Objective To analyse the condylar position through temporomandibular joint(TMJ) transcranial later-al oblique radiographs by analyzing the temporomandibular joint disorder(TMD) patients. Methods Seventy-six patients with TMD(30 males, 46 females) were selected, aging from 17 to 53 years. TMJ transcranialateral oblique radiographs were measured and analyzed using the Cohlmia method. Results Among the 76 TMD patients, the mean value of PO1(the anteropsterior axes of condylar position) was 1.220±0.422 and that of PO2(the vertical axes of condylar position) was 0.386±0.085 on the left side, while the mean value of PO1 was 1.119±0.386 and that of PO2 was 0.397±0.098 on the right side. These condylar position and glenoid fossa difference were found to be insignificant(P>0.05). Conclusion The difference of condylar position is not so obviously in the TMD patients, thus the significance of diagnosis is limited.
Collaboration between industry and research institutes/universities on industrial innovation in Beijing, China

Abstract:Abstract Most R&D resources in China were allocated to public research institutes/universities until the economic transition of the mid 1990s. To maximize the return from these resources, it is important to have a healthy collaboration between industry and research institutes/universities on industrial innovation. This paper examines that relationship and discusses some empirical evidence on its efficiency with particular reference to industry in Beijing. Following a survey of 950 industrial enterprises, the influences of the collaboration relationship on industrial innovation were analyzed. The main findings indicate that the technology novelty of industrial innovation is positively related to that relationship, i.e. the more the collaboration, the higher the technology novelty of the innovation. However, the collaboration relationship is less efficient in terms of economic performance indicators such as innovation sales and profit ratios, to measure innovation. Moreover, the collaboration relationship is still far from efficient in stimulating industrial innovation in China. The major barriers to successful collaboration have also been addressed in this paper with the aim of devising policies and suggesting possible improvements to collaboration efficiency.
Effect of Mediterranean Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) on California Red Scale (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) Populations in Citrus Orchards

Abstract:ABSTRACT We conducted an ant-exclusion experiment in a citrus orchard to evaluate the overall impact of three ant species native in the Mediterranean, Pheidole pallidula (Nylander), Plagiolepis schmitzii Forel, and Lasius grandis (Forel), on populations of Aonidiella aurantii Maskell (California red scale). The ant-exclusion was carried out in four experimental plots from March 2007 to November 2008. Another subset of four plots, adjacent to the ant-excluded plots, was used as control. We measured scale densities and percent parasitism on fruits at harvest in 2007 and 2008. Additionally, we sampled the seasonal trend of the scale on twigs and fruits in both treatments during 2008. California red scale densities in the ant-excluded treatment began to be significantly lower than in the ant-allowed control in May (1 mo after ant activity began), and this difference increased until November. Thus, the effect of the ants on California red scale density seems to be accumulative. At harvest, scale densities on fruits were significantly lower in the ant-excluded treatment. However, percent parasitism on fruits was similar between treatments. Finally, scale densities on the fruits of the ant-allowed plots were positively correlated with the number of ants that climbed to the citrus canopy. These results suggest that increases of scale densities induced by Mediterranean ants depend on the intensity of the ant-activity on citrus canopies.

Abstract:Background: Little is known about the clinical characteristics of idiopathic condylar resorption (ICR). The aim of this study was to examine the signs and symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) and evaluate the morphological characteristics of the condyles in patients with ICR. Methods: Sixty patients with ICR (41 in the bilateral ICR group and 19 in the unilateral ICR group) and forty-one healthy controls were examined. Signs and symptoms of TMD were described, and three-dimensional models of the condyles were measured and analyzed. Results: In total, 81.7% of ICR patients had self-reported symptoms and 78.3% of ICR patients had objective-found signs. The anteroposterior diameter, transverse diameter, height, maximal sectional area, volume of the condyles, axial angle, and the distance from the posterior point of the condyle to the Saggittal standard line were significantly smaller in the ICR condyles compared with the controls (p < 0.05). The condylar neck angle was significantly larger in the ICR condyles compared with the controls (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Most patients with ICR had signs and symptoms of TMD. The prevalence of clicking and opening-closing deviation was significantly different between the bilateral and the unilateral ICR groups. In patients with ICR, the size of the condyles decreased significantly; the condyles also rotated inward, moved forward, and inclined posteriorly.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The optimal position of the condyle in glenoid fossa is a fundamental question in dentistry. There is no quantitative standard for the optimal position of mandibular condyle in the glenoid fossa in our population. The purpose of this study is to assess the position of the condyle by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images in patient with normal function of temporomandibular joint (TMJ).MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, CBCT images of 40 class I skeletal patients (15 males and 25 females) without history of TMJ disorders were selected. Next, the anterior, superior and posterior joint spaces (Ajs, Sjs, Pjs) were measured on the two true central sagittal slices. Then medial (M) and lateral (L) joint spaces on true coronal view were measured in the right and left sides, separately. After that, P/A ratio, S/A ratio and M/L ratio were calculated. Finally, a paired t-test and independent samples t-test were employed for analysis.RESULTS: The centric position of the condyle in glenoid fossa was more common (92.5%) than other positions. Significant differences in Ajs, Sjs, Pjs, Mjs and Ljs values between two sides were observed (P ≤ 0.05). Additionally, Sjs showed statistically significant differences between the sexes (P = 0.05). P/A ratio and S/A ratio had significant differences between two sides but not between those sexes.CONCLUSION: The assessment of joint spaces in right and left sides should be done independently. Overall, the measured joint spaces except Sjs are not different in two sexes. The data from this study could be a useful and comparable reference for the clinical assessment of condylar position in patients with normal functional joints.

Abstract:Background: The authors retrospectively studied the relationship between the morphology and position of the articular disc in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the morphology and position of the condyle in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), with the purpose for providing reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Methods: Patients with both CBCT and MRI imaging data were studied retrospectively, excluding TMJ tumour, fracture, severe condylar morphological abnormalities, non-intercuspal position, and poor quality images. A total of 744 temporomandibular joints (TMJs) from 372 patients were included, with the mean age of 25.94±11.04Y (75 males and 297 females). T2-weighted image (T2WI) of MRI imagings were used to evaluate disc morphology and disc displacement, while CBCT was obtained to evaluate the condylar bone and sagittal condylar position. Data were analysed by Pearson Chi square test and Spearman correlation coefficient. Results: THE DISTRIBUTION OF 744 TMJS IS AS FOLLOWS: 1) DISC MORPHOLOGY: contracture (37.1 %) > biconcave (32.9 %) > irregular (18.5 %) > lengthened (11.4 %); 2) disc position: ADDWoR (48.3 %) > NA (26.9 %) > ADDWR (21.6 %) > PDDWR (2.8 %) > PDDWoR (0.4 %); 3) condylar position: concentric (43.7 %) > posterior (37.6 %) > anterior (18.7 %); 4) condylar bone: normal (63.4 %)> abnormal (36.6 %). There were significant differences in the distribution of disc morphology and disc position between the sex (P < 0.05). There were significant differences in the distribution of disc position and condylar morphology amongst the age groups (P < 0.05). There were significant differences in the distribution of disc position, condylar position and condylar morphology amongst disc morphology (P < 0.05), and there were positive correlation between disc position(r = 0.703, P = 0.000), the score of condyle (r = 0.478, P = 0.000) and disc morphology respectively. There were significant differences in the distribution of disc position and condylar position amongst condylar morphology (P < 0.05). There was a positive correlation between disc position and condyle morphology (r = 0.413, P = 0.000), and a negative correlation between condyle position and condyle morphology (r=-0.152, P = 0.000). There were significant differences in the distribution of disc position amongst condylar position (P < 0.05), but there was no linear correlation (P = 0.159). Conclusions: The mutual distribution of disc morphology, disc position, condylar morphology and condylar position was statistically significant. Disc displacement did not necessarily lead to condylar bone changes, but 92.7 % TMJs with condylar bone abnormalities had disc displacement. Trial registration: This study was retrospectively registered on 28/03/2022 and endorsed by the Ethics committee (LCYJ2022014).

Abstract:Abstract Background The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is included in the category of ginglymoarthrodial synovial joints. The mandibular condyle plays a vital part in the development of the craniofacial complex. Hence, the evaluation and assessment of the condylar volume and its morphology are of utmost importance. Aim The aim of this research was to use cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging modality to evaluate the morphology of the mandibular condyle and glenoid fossa in a selected population and document any morphometric changes. Setting and Design It is an observational study. Materials and Methods A retrospective CBCT analysis was performed on 119 patients. The length, width, height, linear measurements of the joint spaces (anterior, posterior, and superior), volume of the condyle, and roof of glenoid fossa thickness were evaluated on both the left and right sides in both males and females. Results The height, width, and length of mandibular condyle were significantly increased in males on both sides. Except for the left anterior space, all other spaces were significantly larger in males. Overall, the volume of the condyles in males was significantly increased on both sides. Conclusion CBCT can be a valuable diagnostic aid in the evaluation of various dimensions, joint spaces, and condylar volume in different planes and thus, can be a useful predictor in the assessment of treatment outcomes of disorders affecting the TMJ.
Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) Analysis of Mandibular Condyles' Diameters in Patient with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis and Temporomandibular Joint Affection: A Cross-Sectional Investigation

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate through analysis using CBCT the transverse and axial diameters of the mandibular condyles in subjects affected by juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and compare them with those of healthy subjects. Methods: The study was conducted on CBCT scans from the digital archive of the Department of Biomedical Surgical and Dental Sciences, University of Milan, including patients with JIA and using healthy subjects as controls. Inclusion criteria: aged between 7 and 25 years old at the time of the CBCT examination; Caucasian ethnicity; diagnosis of JIA according to the International League of Associations for Rheumatology (ILAR) criteria documented in patients' records; TMJ involvement; good quality CBCTs covering our region of interest (ROI), from the glabella to the mandibular inferior border; no previous orthodontic/orthopedic treatment; no history of craniofacial trauma or congenital birth defects involving the craniofacial area. Each CBCT scan underwent examination using 3Diagnosys® software. Since data were normally distributed, parametric tests were used for analysis. The sample was divided into three groups: (1) bilateral JIA subjects, (2) unilateral JIA subjects, and (3) healthy controls. Results: We found a statistically significant reduction (p < 0.0001) in the transverse diameter (TR-Diam) of the affected condyles by an average of 1.7 mm, while the axial diameter (AX-Diam) again showed a slight reduction, on average by 0.1 mm, with a non-statistically significant value. Another comparison was made between the unaffected condyles of patients with unilateral JIA and the healthy condyles of the control group. The unilateral unaffected condyles were found to be slightly smaller than those of healthy patients, but without statistically significant differences. We found that in both JIA males and females, the condylar growth tends to stop earlier than the healthy ones. Conclusions: The transverse diameter was found to be more affected than the axial one, causing typical bone resorption and condylar shape. Moreover, we showed that the pathology, in the case of unilateral JIA, does not compromise only the affected condyles; the corresponding condyle that seems to be healthy is actually partially compromised. In addition, we observed that the growth of affected condyles of JIA subjects tends to stop earlier than the condyles of the healthy controls.
Three-dimensional characteristics of temporomandibular joint morphology and condylar movement in patients with mandibular asymmetry

Abstract:Background: Investigating the morphological and functional effects on mandibular asymmetry (MA) is important not only to understand the developmental process of masticatory dysfunction, but also to provide suggestions for evidence-based occlusal treatment. Aim: To evaluate three-dimensional temporomandibular joint (TMJ) morphology and its relationship to asymmetrical condylar movement in MA patients. Materials and methods: Fifty subjects were divided into MA and control groups (n = 25 each) according to a menton deviation of 4 mm from the mid-sagittal plane. TMJ morphology (condyle, glenoid fossa and TMJ spaces) were evaluated using a three-dimensional analysis programme. Three-dimensional condylar movements (from the sagittal and horizontal planes) were recorded and measured by computerized axiography on protrusion. Side-to-side asymmetry was measured for each parameter. The asymmetry index value was calculated to assess the correlation between TMJ morphology and condylar movement. For the statistical analysis, Wilcoxon's signed-ranked test, the Mann-Whitney U test, and Spearman's rank correlation were used. Results: Glenoid fossa volume, surface area, anteroposterior length, and condylar volume were significantly smaller, and articular eminence angle, glenoid fossa, and condylar axial angle were significantly larger, on the shifted side of the MA group when compared with those on the non-shifted side and the mean values of the control group (P < 0.05). The TMJ spaces of the MA group showed no bilateral difference but were significantly narrower in the medial, superior, and anterior joint spaces when compared with the control group (P < 0.05). Condylar path length and sagittal condylar inclination were significantly asymmetrical. The asymmetry index of the condyle volume was significantly correlated with that of the condylar path length (P = 0.005). The asymmetry index of the glenoid fossa volume and the articular eminence angle were significantly correlated with that of the sagittal condylar inclination (P = 0.009 and P = 0.002, respectively), and the asymmetry index of glenoid fossa volume was significantly correlated with the bilateral transverse condylar inclination (P = 0.006 and P = 0.016, respectively). Conclusions: Morphological asymmetry of the TMJ is significantly different between the shifted and non-shifted sides and is closely related to functional asymmetry of condylar movement in MA patients. Abstract:Background: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) may be associated with degenerative disease of temporomandibular joint (TMJ), such as condyle erosion and subchondral cysts. Occlusal splint and cranio-mandibular manual therapy, or combined therapy, is recommended as a conservative treatment to alleviate pain-related signs and symptoms in TMD. This study aimed to assess osseous condylar changes and skeletal changes following occlusal splint and cranio-mandibular manual therapy in TMD using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: A retrospective cohort study included 24 patients diagnosed with TMD. Combined therapy was performed until pain-related signs and symptoms disappeared. CBCT scans were performed before and after therapy. Osseous structure of condyles and their subsequent modifications were analyzed on CBCT images: flattening, erosion, and subchondral cyst. Sella-Nasion-A point (SNA), Sella-Nasion-B point (SNB), A point-Nasion-B point (ANB), Sella-Articulare-Gonion (Condylar angle), and anterior and posterior facial height (AFH, PFH) were measured on CBCT-generated lateral cephalograms. A paired t-test, Wilcoxon rank-sum test, McNemar test, and Stuart–Maxwell test were used for the statistical analyses. Results: The treatment period with combined therapy was 7.42 ± 3.27 months, and 21 out of 33 TMJ presenting degenerative disease (63.6%) had significant complete remodeling (p < 0.05). Following therapy, SNB significantly decreased from 75.61 ±3.47° to 74.82 ± 3.41° (p = 0.02), ANB significantly increased from 4.05° (3.35–4.9°) to 4.8° (3.3–6.12°) (p < 0.001), AFH significantly increased from 112.85 mm (109.28–118.72) to 115.3 mm (112.58–118.88) (p < 0.001), PFH/AFH significantly decreased from 64.17 (61.39–66.1) to 63 (59.68–64.51) (p = 0.012), and condylar angle significantly increased from 140.84 ± 8.18° to 144.42 ± 8.87° (p = 0.007). Conclusion: Combined therapy promoted significant condylar remodeling in TMJ degenerative disease, along with skeletal changes (mandibular retrusion and increase in facial height). Therapeutic strategies should consider condylar remodeling in TMD. Skeletal and dental parameters should be evaluated prior to occlusal splint therapy.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:The authors evaluated the morphology and symmetry of the temporomandibular joint in participants with normodivergent and hyperdivergent skeletal class I, II, and III patterns.METHODS:A total of 80 participants were divided into 4 groups on the basis of their sagittal and vertical skeletal patterns. Cone-beam computed tomographic images were used to evaluate the condyle-fossa relationship and the morphology and symmetry of the mandibular condyle. One-way analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc tests were used to compare the mean values among the different groups.RESULTS:Participants with class II hyperdivergent patterns had the smallest anteroposterior (mean [standard deviation {SD}], 4.4 [1.6] millimeters) and mediolateral (10.5 [3.0] mm) condylar process widths among all 4 groups. The mean (SD) axial condylar angle was flatter in patients with class III hyperdivergent patterns (19.8° [5.1°]) compared with the other groups. The mean (SD) anteroposterior differences of the condylar processes (2.9 [1.4] mm) in patients with class III hyperdivergent patterns were the greatest in all 4 groups.CONCLUSION:Participants in the group with class II hyperdivergent patterns have a smaller and narrower condyle compared with the other groups measured. Asymmetry was found among all groups, with participants with skeletal class III patterns having the most asymmetry. The most common condylar morphology in all groups examined was convex.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS:These results support the concept that morphology and symmetry of the temporomandibular joint varies in different skeletal patterns, presumably as an adaptive response to functional demands.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the condyle position in the fossa and obtain the reference ranges of Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) space of 50 healthy adults (100 joints) by using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS:Fifty healthy adults (100 joints) were selected and undergone CBCT examination in the intercuspal position. Five different methods of joint space measurement were used based on the joint sagittal middle layer of CBCT images and the results were analysed statistically. RESULTS:The reference ranges of TMJ space of CBCT images by using five measurement methods were obtained. The results of the linear measurement methods demonstrated that there were no significant differences between anterior and posterior spaces (Z0.05),no significant differences between the two side joint spaces including anterior, posterior and superior spaces (t0.05 ),and also no significant differences in ln (P/A) values between two side joints (t0.05). CONCLUSION:All the results of the five measurement methods showed that the condyle was located in the center of the fossa with a variation in the healthy adults in intercuspal position.The CBCT image of the sagittal middle layer of the joint could show the joint space accurately and has an important value in the research related to the changes of TMJ space.

Abstract:(1) Background-The aim of the present study was to evaluate the correlation between the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osseous morphology of normal skeletal pattern individuals with different dental malocclusions by using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). (2) Methods-The CBCT images of bilateral TMJs in 67 subjects with skeletal class I and average mandibular angle (26 males and 41 females, age range 20-49 years) were evaluated in this study. The subjects were divided into class I, class II division 1, and class II division 2 according to the molar relationship and retroclination of the maxillary incisors. Angular and linear measurements of TMJ were evaluated and the differences between the groups were statistically analyzed. (3) Results-Intragroup comparisons showed statistical differences for articular eminence inclination, the width of the glenoid fossa, the ratio of the width of the glenoid fossa to the depth of the glenoid fossa, the condylar angle, and the intercondylar angle between the malocclusion groups. The measurements of the glenoid fossa shape showed no significant difference between the left and right sides. Females showed more differences in the morphological parameters of TMJ between the three malocclusion groups than the males. Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the relationship between the contour of articular eminence and traces of the condylar kinematic center during jaw opening movement in healthy subjects, and compare trace characteristics of condylar kinematic center and MRI findings in TMD patients. METHODS:In 10 healthy subjects, jaw-opening motion was recorded. The kinematic center and terminal hinge axis point of the condyle were used as trace reference points. The contour of articular eminence was examined by MRI. Seven patients with TMD signs and/or symptoms (disk displacement) were selected for this study. The condylar trace was recorded during jaw protrusion and opening-closing. The internal derangement in temporomandibular joints was detected by MRI and defined as: (1). normal disk position, (2). disk displacement with reduction, (3). disk displacement without reduction. RESULTS:In healthy subjects, most of the opening traces of the kinematic center coincided with the contour of articular eminence (8/10 joints in left, 9/10 joints in right). For terminal hinge axis point, no trace coincided with the contour of articular eminence (0/20 joints in left and right). In TMD patients, according to MRI findings, the condylar traces of kinematic center in 3 normal disk position joints showed normal shape. However, in 6 disk displacements with reduction joints and 5 disk displacement without reduction joints, the condylar traces of kinematic center showed irregular patterns except 1 disk displacement with reduction joint. CONCLUSIONS:In comparison with the terminal hinge axis point, the opening traces of the kinematic center can be interpreted as the translatory movement of the condyle/disc along the articular eminence. The study suggests the use of kinematic center in condylar movement studies.
Relationship between interincisal angles and TMJ morphology/position and trabecular structure: a retrospective study

Abstract:Background: TMJ morphology/position and trabecular structure are influenced by various factors. The role of the interincisal angle, an indicator of the anterior occlusal relationship, on TMJ remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the morphology, trabecular bone structure, and position of the condyle, as well as the glenoid fossa's morphology in skeletal class II populations with different interincisal angles. Materials and methods: A total of 150 adult patients with normodivergent facial types and skeletal class II malocclusions were selected and divided into three groups based on their interincisal angles: normal, small, and large angle groups. The indexes of TMJ were measured using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data and analyzed using Dolphin Imaging, Mimics, and ImageJ. Results: The small angle group had the smallest anteroposterior diameter (APD), while the large angle group had a greater mediolateral diameter (MLD). The large angle group exhibited significantly the largest maximum axial area, bone surface area, and bone volume (P < 0.05). Small and large angle groups exhibited greater bone trabeculae (Tb. N) and thinner trabecular thickness (Tb. Th). Compared to the normal angle group, the small angle group exhibited a larger horizontal condylar angle and smaller bilateral condylar angles on the axial plane, while the large angle group showed the opposite trend. Small and large angle groups showed a reduced vertical condyle angle on the coronal plane, with the largest reduction observed in the large angle group (P < 0.05). Small and large angle groups had higher heights of the glenoid fossa (GFH). The large angle group exhibited the greatest GFH and width of the glenoid fossa (GFW) (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The large angle group had elongated oval and large condyles, and deeper glenoid fossae, while a flattened-oval and smaller condyle, and wider and shallower glenoid fossae were observed in the small angle group. Small and large interincisal angle affects the structure of condylar trabeculae, resulting in thinner Tb. Th and greater Th. N. In the condylar position, small and large angle groups exhibit condylar rotation in the axial and coronal planes. Therefore, the interincisal angle affects the morphology, position, and trabecular structure of the TMJ. This implies that we must pay attention to the impact of the interincisal angle on TMJ, and it is crucial to restore the normal interincisal angle during orthodontic treatment.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To compare the temporomandibular joint space and condylar position on transcranial projections between the patients with anterior disc displacement (ADD) and the healthy controls. To investigate the diagnostic value of the condylar position for the ADD patients. METHODS:120 joints of 120 ADD patients and 30 joints of healthy adults, who were taken transcranial projections, were included in this study. The transcranial projections were scanned with precise scanning apparatus and saved as joint photographic group image. The joint spaces were measured with the software of Auto CAD. Two different quantitative methods of joint space measurement, ZHANG Zhen-kang's method and Kamelchuk's method, were used based on the transcranial projections. The ln(P/A) values were calculated (P:width of the posterior joint space; A: width of the anterior joint space). Concentric position of the condyle was defined if ln(P/A) value was between -0.25 and +0.25. If ln(P/A) was larger than +0.25, the condylar position was defined as anteriorly eccentric. Posteriorly eccentric position was indicated when ln(P/A) value was lower than -0.25. The results were compared and software SPSS 12.0 was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS:The results of the two linear measurement methods demonstrated that the superior and posterior joint spaces of the ADD patients were narrower than those of the healthy controls significantly (P < 0.05), while the anterior joint spaces of the ADD patients had no significant differences with those of the controls (P > 0.05). In addition, there were significant differences in ln(P/A) values of joint spaces between the patients with ADD patients and the controls (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION:Posterior position of the condyle could be a sign of existence of ADD, but ADD could not be diagnosed only by the posterior condyle position showed on the transcranial projections because of the variation of the condylar position.
