Abstract:In the present study, a new low-cost bioceramic nanocomposite based on porous hydroxyapatite (HAp) and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactant was successfully obtained by a simple chemical co-precipitation. The composition and structure of the HAp-CTAB were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrometer, and N2 adsorption/desorption analysis. The capacity of HAp-CTAB nanocomposites to remove the lead ions from aqueous solutions was studied by adsorption batch experiments and proved by Langmuir and Freundlich models. The Pb2+ removal efficiency of HAp-CTAB biocomposite was also confirmed by non-destructive ultrasound studies. The cytotoxicity assays showed that the HAp-CTAB nanocomposites did not induce any significant morphological changes of HeLa cells after 24 h of incubation or other toxic effects. Taken together, our results suggests that the obtained porous HAp-CTAB powder could be used for the decontamination of water polluted with heavy metals, such as Pb2+.

Abstract:Water purification from toxic metals was the main objective of this work. A composite in film form was prepared from the biomaterials hydroxyapatite, chitosan and glycerol using the dissolution/recrystallization method. A nanoparticle-based film with a homogenous and smooth surface was produced. The results of total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA/DTA) demonstrated the presence of a substantial physical force between composite components. The composite was tested for its ability to absorb Cd2+ and Zn2+ ions from aqueous solutions. Cd2+ and Zn2+ adsorption mechanisms are fit using the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that Cd2+ and Zn2+ ion adsorption onto the composite surface is spontaneous and preferred at neutral pH and temperatures somewhat higher than room temperature. The adsorption studies showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of the HAp/CTs bio-composite membrane for Cd2+ and Zn2+ ions was in the order of cadmium (120 mg/g) > Zinc (90 mg/g) at an equilibrium time of 20 min and a temperature of 25 °C. The results obtained on the physico-chemical properties of nanocomposite membranes and their sorption capacities offer promising potential for industrial and biological activities.

Abstract:The present work aimed to fabricate a set of hybrid bioactive membrane in the form of bio-nanocomposite films for dental applications using the casting dissolution procedures. The formulation of the targeted materials was consisting of cellulose acetate/bioactive glass/hydroxyapatite/carbon nanotubes with a general abbreviation CA-HAP-BG-SWCNTs. The nanocomposites were characterized using XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDX and Raman spectroscopy. XRD, FTIR and SEM characters confirm the nanocomposites formation with good compatibility. The fabricated materials had a semi crystalline structure. The mechanical and thermal properties, as well as contact angle and bioactivity of the fabricated nanocomposites were investigated. The SEM images for showed beehive-like architectures with a thicker frame for the second material. All fabricated materials showed good thermal behaviors. Furthermore, the agar diffusion antimicrobial study showed that the prepared nanocomposites do not exhibit an antibacterial activity against five pathogenic bacterial strains. Additionally, cytotoxicity of a dental nanocomposite filling agent was evaluated. Vero normal cells were incubated with test materials for 72h at 37 °C and 5% CO2. Cell viability was detected using a SRB assay. All nanocomposites were mildly to non-cytotoxic to Vero cells at high concentration in contrast to the inhibitory effect of doxorubicin which was added at 10-fold lower concertation than the nanocomposites. Hence, the proposed nanocomposite is promising candidates for dental applications.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to develop a new, efficient, and inexpensive natural-based adsorbent with high efficacy for the cationic dye methylene blue (MB). A natural-based nanocomposite based on hydroxyapatite (HAp) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) was selected for this purpose. It was synthesized by the dissolution/reprecipitation method. A film with a homogeneous and smooth surface composed of nanoparticles was prepared from the nanocomposite. HPMC and HAp biopolymers were selected due to their compatibility, biodegradability, and non-toxicity. Total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and calorimetric/thermal gravimetric (DSC/TGA) analysis results revealed the existence of strong physical interaction between the composite components. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations show a composite sheet with a homogenous and smooth surface, indicating excellent compatibility between HPMC and HAp in the composite. The nanocomposite was evaluated as an adsorbent for organic dyes in an aqueous solution. The effects of solution pH, initial MB concentration, composite concentration, and adsorption time on the adsorption efficiency were evaluated. The highest adsorption rate was seen as 52.0 mg of MB/g composite. The adsorption rate reached equilibrium in about 20 min. Fitting of the adsorption data to the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models was investigated. Results showed that the adsorption process follows the Langmuir isotherm model. The kinetic study results revealed that the adsorption process was pseudo-second-order. The herein composite is an excellent alternative for use as contemporary industrial-scale adsorbents.

Abstract:In this work, we presented a synthesis of a composite based on HAp and PEG 6000 using a new method of synthesis dissolution precipitation to be applied for application of wastewater purification from toxic metal ions. Multiple characterization methods were used to analyze the morphology and the structure of the well-prepared compounds including FT-IR, Raman, XRD, XPS, TGA and SEM were used to conduct a composite analysis. The adsorption effectiveness of this analysis towards Pb 2+ and various other hazardous metal ions found in sewage was assessed. Batch experiments were conducted to optimize the various operational parameters including adsorbent dose, temperature, pH, contact time, and initial concentration. The Langmuir isotherm was used to fit the data, and it predicted monolayer adsorption with a maximum capacity of 67 mg g −1 for HAP PEG600 and 60 mg g −1 for HAp. A pseudo-second-order equation fits the adsorption process well (0.961–0.971). The thermodynamic data support the spontaneous metal bonding to the composite receptor sites. Theoretical calculations showed that the interaction strength is very strong and gets stronger when the PEG6000 is deprotonated. The results presented here are supported by evidence acquired from experiments. Theoretical computation using Monte Carlo (MC) and Molecular Dynamic (MD) simulation models showed excellent affinity of prepared foams for the model ion Pb 2+ with highly negative adsorption energy values indicating vigorous interactions of Pb 2+ with the adsorbate surfaces.

Abstract:In recent years, academic and industrial research has focused on using agro-waste for energy and new material production to promote sustainable development and lessen environmental issues. In this study, new nanocomposites based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-Starch using two affordable agricultural wastes, Citrus limon peels (LP) and Citrullus colocynthis (Cc) shells and seeds powders with different concentrations (2, 5, 10, and 15 wt%) as bio-fillers were prepared. The nanocomposites were characterized by Dielectric Spectroscopy, Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and water swelling ratio. The antimicrobial properties of the nanocomposites against Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , and Candida albicans were examined to investigate the possibility of using such composites in biomedical applications. Additionally, the biocompatibility of the composites on human normal fibroblast cell lines (HFB4) was tested using MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay. The results demonstrate that the filler type and concentration strongly affect the film's properties. The permittivity ε′, dielectric loss ε′′ and conductivity σ dc increased by increasing filler content but still in the insulators range that recommend such composites to be used in the insulation purposes. Both bio fillers control the water uptake, and the samples filled with LP were more water resistant. The polyvinyl alcohol/starch incorporated with 5 wt% LP and Cc have antimicrobial effects against all the tested microorganisms. Increasing the filler content has a negative impact on cell viability.

Abstract:Nano-hydroxyapatite/bamboo fiber (n-HA/BF) composite membranes were obtained by a simple casting technology. The mechanism of the membrane formation and the effects of different pre-drying conditions, drying methods and n-HA addition amounts on the properties of the n-HA/BF composite membranes were investigated by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle, Electromechanical universal tester, in vitro soaking in simulated body fluid (SBF) and in vitro cell culture experiment. The results demonstrated that different preparation conditions did not affect the dispersity of n-HA nanoparticles in BF matrix, but determined the membrane appearances, owing to the different changes of hydrogen bond under different pre-drying temperatures. Moreover, the hydrophilicity of the composite membranes could be improved when the membranes were prepared at 70 °C and freeze-drying as well as n-HA high addition content, and the mechanical properties of the composite membranes depended on n-HA addition content. In vitro soaking behavior indicated that the corrosion properties and bone-like apatite deposition could be controlled by different preparation conditions. The cell proliferation results showed that the n-HA/BF composite membranes obtained in different preparation conditions were all non-toxic. The obtained results showed that the casting technique could be used to prepare n-HA/BF composite membranes, and the properties of the composite membranes could be controlled by adopting different preparation conditions, which would have a great potential for guide bone tissue regeneration (GBR) membranes, and the study would provide a new way for BF application in biomedical fields.Graphical abstractIn this manuscript, nano-hydroxyapatite/BF (n-HA/BF) composite membranes were prepared by casting method, and the membrane forming mechanism and the effects of different pre-drying conditions, drying methods and n-HA amounts on the corresponding n-HA/BF membrane were investigated. Interfacial Compatibilization into PLA/Mg Composites for Improved In Vitro Bioactivity and Stem Cell Adhesion

Abstract:The present work highlights the crucial role of the interfacial compatibilization on the design of polylactic acid (PLA)/Magnesium (Mg) composites for bone regeneration applications. In this regard, an amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide-b-L,L-lactide) diblock copolymer with predefined composition was synthesised and used as a new interface to provide physical interactions between the metallic filler and the biopolymer matrix. This strategy allowed (i) overcoming the PLA/Mg interfacial adhesion weakness and (ii) modulating the composite hydrophilicity, bioactivity and biological behaviour. First, a full study of the influence of the copolymer incorporation on the morphological, wettability, thermal, thermo-mechanical and mechanical properties of PLA/Mg was investigated. Subsequently, the bioactivity was assessed during an in vitro degradation in simulated body fluid (SBF). Finally, biological studies with stem cells were carried out. The results showed an increase of the interfacial adhesion by the formation of a new interphase between the hydrophobic PLA matrix and the hydrophilic Mg filler. This interface stabilization was confirmed by a decrease in the damping factor (tanδ) following the copolymer addition. The latter also proves the beneficial effect of the composite hydrophilicity by selective surface localization of the hydrophilic PEO leading to a significant increase in the protein adsorption. Furthermore, hydroxyapatite was formed in bulk after 8 weeks of immersion in the SBF, suggesting that the bioactivity will be noticeably improved by the addition of the diblock copolymer. This ceramic could react as a natural bonding junction between the designed implant and the fractured bone during osteoregeneration. On the other hand, a slight decrease of the composite mechanical performances was noted.

Abstract:Herein, polyvinyl alcohol-carboxymethyl cellulose (PVA-CMC) composite hydrogel membranes were prepared using solution-casting method, where citric acid (CA) was added as crosslinker in different ratios of (7, 10 and12 wt%). Attapulgite clay extracted from Northwestern Desert of Borg El-Arab, Egypt; was incorporated as nanofiller (1, 2, 4, and 5 wt%) into membranes for improving their mechanical/ thermal stability. Results revealed that, physicochemical properties of membranes e.g. swelling%, tensile strength and morphology of membranes affected significantly by different clay concentrations and citric acid crosslinker. Also, attapulgite clay with concentration 1 (wt%) enhanced mechanical strength of composite membranes, compared to other clay concentrations. Furthermore, protein adsorption %, hydrolytic degradation, hemolysis (%) and antimicrobial activity significantly affected by clay contents and CA concentrations. Four bacterial pathogens e.g. Candida albicans , Escherichia coli , Klebsiella pneumoniae , and Bacillus cereus were used for testing antimicrobial activity of prepared membranes. Results referred to increasing of clay contents led to a high hemolysis %; however, increasing CA concentration significantly reduced hemolysis %. Meanwhile, membranes with low clay contents offered the most effective resistance against tested microbes. These findings are referring to the ability of using PVA-CMC-attapulgite composite membranes crosslinked by CA as good candidate of biomaterials for dermal wound dressings.

Abstract:Bacterial cellulose (BC), as a natural renewable polymer material, has the advantages of porous nanonetwork structure, high degree of polymerization, high purity, high crystallinity, excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, BC lacks antibacterial properties, which leads to the limitation of BC material in food packaging and medical materials. In this study, a new antibacterial material using the combination of montmorillonite (MMT), BC and exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by Weissella confusa H2 was synthesized. Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that BC-EPS, BC-MMT and BC-EPS-MMT composite membranes conformed to the typical type I cellulose structure. Compared to BC membrane, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the porosity of BC-EPS, BC-MMT and BC-EPS-MMT composite membranes was low and compact. The physical properties of BC-EPS, BC-MTT and BC-EPS-MTT composite membranes showed lower water vapor transmittance. The BC-MTT and BC-EPS-MTT composite membranes exhibit a lower swelling ratio in 120 min. The thermal properties show that BC-EPS, BC-MTT and BC-EPS-MTT composite membranes have higher thermal stability (352 °C, 310 °C, 314 °C). Additionally, both BC-MMT and BC-EPS-MMT demonstrated strong inhibitory effects against various bacterial strains, including Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli , Salmonella paratyphi A, and Bacillus subtilis . The exceptional properties exhibited by composite membranes establishes them as a highly promising option in the field of food packaging and medical material applications.

Abstract:A functional hybrid nano-hydroxyapatite (carboxymethyl cellulose-phytic acid-n-HA, CMC-PA-n-HA) was prepared by adding CMC and PA. The results of Fourier transformation infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis and dispersion experiments indicated that the addition of CMC and PA affected the morphology, crystallinity and crystal size of hybrid n-HA, and CMC endowed hybrid n-HA with excellent dispersion. Scanning electron microscope results showed that CMC-PA-n-HA nanoparticle could be uniformly dispersed in chitosan (CS) matrix to obtain composite membrane by casting technology, so that the highest tensile strength of CMC-PA-n-HA/CS composite membrane was 69.64% and 144.45% higher than that of CS membrane and n-HA/CS composite membrane, respectively. Contact angle test showed that CMC-PA-n-HA effectively improved hydrophilicity of the CS membrane. The simulated body fluid immersion results indicated that the CMC-PA-n-HA/CS composite membrane not only exhibited good degradability but also promoted bone-like apatite deposition. The cell proliferation experiments proved that the introduction of PA made the composite membrane have better cell adhesion and proliferation ability. Antibacterial tests demonstrated that PA could effectively improve the antibacterial properties of the composite membrane, which is expected to be applied as guide bone tissue regeneration membrane.

Abstract:Abstract This work reported a new perspective on improving the incorporation of nanoparticles(NPs) into membranes for several applications. Composite membranes were produced via the phase inversion method using cellulose acetate (CA) as the polymer, mixed with four different NPs: ZnO and Fe 3 O 4 NPs were prepared by the co-precipitation method, while SiO 2 and TiO 2 NPs were commercial NPs. The impact of NPs on the membrane morphology was investigated by SEM and AFM. The composite CA membranes have been characterized by their contact angle, porosity, and water content. Membrane performance has been investigated in terms of water permeability and salt retention such as NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 . The produced CA composite membrane could be successfully applied for salt removal, particularly the CA-Fe 3 O 4 composite membrane, which shows good water permeability (15.4 L/m 2 h bar) and higher salt rejection (93%).Consequently, the use of low-density hydrophilic NPs in the polymeric dope solution produces membranes with higher hydrophilicity and the ability to reduce the membrane fouling.

Abstract:Membrane separation has been widely used for various applications including microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), and nanofiltration (NF) processes in the fields of biomedicine, food, and water purification. In this work, a facile synthesis of new polyamide thin-film composite nanofiltration membranes (NF-TFC) for water purification was described. The polyamide thin film was deposed over a synthetic cellulose acetate (CA) support by interfacial polymerization method. 1,3 cyclohexane bis (methylamine) (CHMA) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) were used as monomers. The membranes were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), water uptake, porosity, contact angle, water permeability and rejection towards specific salt and dye molecules. The effect of the variation of the CHMA concentration (0.2–2 wt.%) on the morphology, porosity, water permeation and rejection properties of the prepared membranes was studied. SEM results displayed the growth of the membrane thickness when the CHMA concentration increased from 0.2 to 2 wt.%. The strong adhesion between the cellulose acetate substrate and the polyamide layer explained by the formation of the polyamide film in the substrate surface and inside the pores. The water permeability varied from 36.02 to 17.09 L h−1 m−2 bar−1. The salt rejection of Na2SO4 and NaCl increased from 9 to 68% and from 38.41% to 89.4%, respectively, when the CHMA concentration was changed from 0.2 to 2 wt.%. The prepared membranes were further applied successfully for the removal of malachite green and congo red. The results indicated that the maximum rejection reached 89% and 85% for malachite green and congo red, respectively.

Abstract:The composite fiber membrane of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/sodium alginate (SA)/nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) was fabricated by electrospinning method. In order to prevent the agglomeration and precipitation of nHAP in aqueous spinning solution, nHAP was ultrasonically suspended in aqueous solution using SA (the component of composite membrane) as stabilizer. The effect of nHAP on the morphology and mechanical property of composite fiber membrane was investigated. The in vitro biological properties including hemolysis, cytotoxicity, cell adhereing and proliferation of composite fiber membrane were evaluated. Results show that SA stabilized nHAP (SA-nHAP) suspension (1.67-10.02 mg/mL) can be obtained with SA/nHAP mass ratio of 1:33.4 for preparing homogeneous spinning solution. The electrospun membranes with PVA/SA/nHAP mass ratio of 9.33:(0.67-0.69):(0-0.668) show good fiber morphology, homogeneous incorporation and distribution of nHAP in fibers, and the content of SA-nHAP (6.25 wt%) in membrane is significantly increased compared to that of untreated nHAP (3.23 wt%). The incorporation of SA-nHAP of 1.64 wt.% significantly improves the tensile strength of PVA/SA/nHAP fiber membrane with about 45% enhancement. The hemolysis and cytotoxicity tests show that the composite fiber membrane has good biocompatibility. Moreover, cells can be seeded and proliferate well on composite fiber membrane. Therefore, the obtained PVA/SA/nHAP composite fiber membrane has the potential use as a tissue regeneration material.

Abstract:Presently, most nanofiltration membranes are prepared with non-biodegradable petrochemical materials. This process is harmful to the ecosystem and consumes a large amount of non-renewable energy. In this study, biodegradable and biocompatible antibacterial cellulose/chitosan nanofiltration membranes (BC/CS-NFMs) were fabricated and characterized for their mechanical strength, antimicrobial activity, salt and dye filtration performance, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) retention using Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), Field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The BC/CS-NFMs were obtained by the hydrolysis and carboxymethylation of dense cellulose/chitosan membranes (BC/CSMs). The tensile strength of the BC/CS-NFMs decreased as the chitosan content increased. In addition, the thermal stability and antibacterial ability of the BC/CS-NFMs improved. The pore size is less than 1 nm, and a spongy, layered structure is observed in the cross-sectional FE-SEM images. FT-IR analysis shows that a part of the hydroxyl in cellulose transforms to carboxymethyl during the hydrolysis and carboxymethylation of the BC/CSMs. No obvious changes can be observed in the cellulose and chitosan after the blend membrane formation from the XRD measurements. Based on the experimental results on the permeation and rejection of BC/CS-NFMs, different proportions of cellulose and chitosan nanofiltration membranes almost did not affect the water flux and rejection rate. The BC/CS-NFMs showed better water flux and a higher rejection rate in aqueous dye-salt solutions.

Abstract:The development of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and polyether ether ketone (PEEK) biocomposites has been extensively studied for bone repair applications due to the synergistic properties of the involved materials. In this study, we aimed to develop HAp/PEEK biocomposites using high-energy ball milling, with HAp concentrations (20%, 40%, and 60% w/v) in PEEK, to evaluate their physicochemical, mechanical, cytotoxicity, and antimicrobial properties for potential applications in Tissue Engineering (TE). The biocomposites were characterized by structure, morphology, apparent porosity, diametral compression strength, cytotoxicity, and antimicrobial activity. The study results demonstrated that the HAp/PEEK biocomposites were successfully synthesized. The C2 biocomposite, containing 40% HAp, stood out due to the optimal distribution of HAp particles in the PEEK matrix, resulting in higher compression strength (246 MPa) and a homogeneous microstructure. It exhibited antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli, with no cytotoxicity observed. These properties make the C2 biocomposite promising for regenerative medicine applications, combining mechanical strength, bioactivity, and biocompatibility.

Abstract:Multifunctional membrane technology has gained tremendous attention in wastewater treatment, including oil/water separation and photocatalytic activity. In the present study, a multifunctional composite nanofiber membrane is capable of removing dyes and separating oil from wastewater, as well as having antibacterial activity. The composite nanofiber membrane is composed of cellulose acetate (CA) filled with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in a polymer matrix and dipped into a solution of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs). Membrane characterization was performed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and water contact angle (WCA) studies were utilized to evaluate the introduced membranes. Results showed that membranes have adequate wettability for the separation process and antibacterial activity, which is beneficial for water disinfection from living organisms. A remarkable result of the membranes' analysis was that methylene blue (MB) dye removal occurred through the photocatalysis process with an efficiency of ~20%. Additionally, it exhibits a high separation efficiency of 45% for removing oil from a mixture of oil–water and water flux of 20.7 L.m−2 h−1 after 1 h. The developed membranes have multifunctional properties and are expected to provide numerous merits for treating complex wastewater.

Abstract:Novel thin film composite nanofiltration membranes were prepared over ceramic substrate by interfacial polymerization (IP). Glutaraldehyde (GA) was used as crosslinker between aqueous phase monomer polyethyleneimine (PEI) and the ceramic surface in order to enhance the attachment between polyamide functional layer and ceramic substrate. PEI was further reacted with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) by IP technique to create denser crosslinked structure with lower pore size. The effect of GA crosslinking on IP of PEI and TMC was studied by varying the concentration of GA and PEI. Different coating approaches were explored to form stable and uniform functional layer over ceramic substrate. A series of composite membranes were fabricated and characterized using FESEM, EDX and XPS analyses. The membrane with optimum properties exhibited clean water permeability in the range of 20–32 Lm −2 h −1 bar −1 and highest rejection of 99.5 % for Cu(II), 99 % for Pb(II), 85 % for As(V) and 60 % for Cr(VI) from 5 mg/L aqueous solution. Finally, the robust ceramic substrate was regenerated by removal of the polymeric functional layer with 1000 mg/L·hr of free chlorine treatment followed by 1 min of ultrasonication at 33.3 KHz. Composite membrane prepared using the regenerated ceramic substrate showed similar flux and rejection properties compared to virgin membrane.
