Abstract:In a previous work by the author [H.S. Hedia and M. Nemat-Alla, Design optimization of functionally graded dental implant, submitted to be published in the J. Bio-Medical Materials and Engineering], a functionally graded material dental implant was designed without cansellous bone in the model. In this investigation the effect of presence cancellous bone as a thin layer around the dental implant was investigated. It is well known that the main inorganic component of natural bone is hydroxyapatite (HAP) and that the main organic component is collagen (Col). Hydroxyapatite HAP implants are not bioabsorbable, and because induction of bone into and around the artificially made HAP is not always satisfactory, loosening or breakage of HAP implants may occur after implantation in the clinical application. The development of a new material which is bioabsorbable and which has osteoconductive activity is needed. Therefore, the aim of the current investigation is to design an implant, in the presence of cancellous bone as a thin layer around it, from functionally graded material. In this study, a novel biomaterial, collagen/hydroxyapatite (Col/HAP) as a functionally graded material (FGM), was developed using the finite element and optimization techniques which are available in the ANSYS package. These materials have a self-organized character similar to that of natural bone. The investigations have shown that the maximum stress in the cortical bone and cancellous bone for the Col/HAP functionally graded implant has been reduced by about 40% and 19% respectively compared to currently used titanium dental implants.

Abstract:Background: Although social media is emerging as an educational tool in health care professions, little is known about which social media platforms support nursing education in different situations. Method: This systematic review examined and ranked the level of evidence that supports social media use in nursing education. Results: A total of 19 studies published between 2017 and 2022 were evaluated and described in an evidence table. Results revealed social media is used in a variety of settings and in different ways, including providing enhanced learning for hands-on skills, supporting course activities such as journal clubs, and creating a sense of community and belongingness. Conclusion: Social media in health care education can address asynchronous learning management system issues; create community belongingness; and support student collaboration; however, such uses also may allow a loss of privacy. Abstract:Aim To identify and report the use of social media among pre‐registration (pre‐licence) student nurses. Methods A social survey was conducted in 2019 to explore student nurses' views of social media usage. Diffusion of innovation theory and social identity theory were used as the theoretical framework. A reflexive thematic analysis was undertaken of responses to an open‐ended question. Results 351 responses were analysed. Four themes emerged: Social media as a communication tool that helps to keep in contact and communicate with friends, family, colleagues and peers; Social media and self‐care including a sense of pride, boosting morale and helping to relax; Social media and learning by sharing experiences, chatting, posts and social media and professionalism, participants expressed confusion over the use of social media professionally. Conclusions The diffusion of social media among UK student nurses is advancing in different aspects of UK student nurses' lives. However, the diffusion seems to slow down when it comes to the professional system. They express concerns that one social system can negatively impact another and have repercussions on a personal and/or professional level and therefore prevent UK student nurses from developing social media proficiencies. Guidance and support should be offered to UK student nurses to develop their social identity across the different systems. This diffusion can help to educate student nurses and future professionals in a globally connected world. Impact Social media features in student nurses' personal and professional lives and presents challenges for social identity which is woven into the personal and professional personas. Nursing faculties should have social media competencies embedded into the curricula to develop and strengthen students' social and professional identities across the different systems. Abstract:Abstract Background The abundance of easy and accessible information and the rapid development of social networking sites (SNSs) have proven that the world is small and within reach. The great implication of this interconnectivity is attributable to the change in the learning and sharing environment, which for the most part is something that classrooms are lacking. Considering the potential implications of SNSs in nursing education reveals the benefits of SNSs in allowing students to communicate and interact with a wider audience and beyond the classroom. The aim of this study is to identify the extent of SNS utilization, the perceived benefits of SNSs and the potential of SNSs for improving the study habits of nursing students in five countries (Israel, Iraq, Oman, the Philippines and Turkey). Methods This study is a quantitative cross-sectional study that determined the relationship between the utilization of SNSs, the perceived benefits of SNSs, and the potential of SNSs for improving the study habits of nursing students in the five participating countries (Israel, Iraq, Oman, the Philippines, and Turkey). This paper is based on carefully analysing the survey responses of a sample of 1137 students from an online hosting site. The online instrument focuses on the extent of the utilization and benefits of SNSs according to their accessibility, usability, efficiency and reliability. Results Based on the Pearson correlation coefficient (r) our findings, reveal a significant positive correlation between the extent of a possible improvement in study habits and the extent of SNS utilization in terms of the four domains, namely, accessibility (r = 0.246), usability (r = 0.377), reliability (r = 0.287) and efficiency (r = 0.387). Conclusion It can be concluded that there is a significant positive correlation between students’ study habits and the extent of SNS utilization, meaning that the more students devote themselves to their study habits, the higher the level of SNS utilization. The use of SNSs by nursing students has positive and negative implications, and there is greater potential for further improving approaches to nursing education through the adaptation of curricula based on the proper utilization of SNSs.

Undergraduate student nurses' attitudes towards using social media websites: A study from Jordan

Abstract:Background: The use of social media by university students is recognized worldwide. Student nurses are no exception, yet no studies have been reported to investigate the nurse students' use and views of social media in Jordan. The current study aims to assess the validity and reliability of an Arabic version of the modified Students Nurses' Use and Views of Social Media survey. Methods: In a cross-sectional study conducted on 395 student nurses aged 19-39 enrolled at two universities (one public and one private) in north Jordan, information on their use and attitude to social media was obtained using the Arabic version of the Students Nurses' Use and Views of Social Media survey. Exploratory factor analysis and correlation matrices were conducted to assess the validity and reliability of the tool. Results: The Arabic version of the tool had a 0.84 alpha of internal consistency indicating a high level of reliability. The scale showed multi-dimensionality with items loading on two factors. Conclusion: The Arabic version of the Students Nurses' Use and Views of Social Media questionnaire demonstrated initial reliability and validity. Abstract:The propagation of social media carries important ethical ramifications for communication norms, democracy, societal wellbeing, and individual mental health. These issues fall within the professional purview of social work. The purpose of this national survey study ( N = 430) was to describe social media use, attitudes, and knowledge among social work students across the United States. To achieve this stated purpose, the authors obtained IRB Human Subjects approval and contacted undergraduate and graduate social work program directors at the identified 150 institutions using a random, stratified sampling method. A 66-item Qualtrics survey on social media use, attitudes, and knowledge was subsequently sent to program directors, who in turn administered the link to enrolled social work students. Overall, findings reveal that social work students seemingly hold conflicting attitudes toward social media that are also at times contrary to their self-reported knowledge and use of social media, and that have potential implications for the social work profession. The authors discuss social media's ethical implications for the social work profession, supporting the position that information about social media should be included in social work curricula and making suggestions to this end.

Abstract:Social media may promote knowledge sharing but what users do with the new knowledge and how it may influence practice remains to be known. This exploratory study used a social constructivist lens to understand how health professions educators and researchers integrate knowledge from social media into their respective practices. We purposively sampled health professions educators and researchers using the hashtags #MedEd, #HPE, and #HealthProfessionsEducation on Twitter/X. We obtained informed consent, conducted interviews via videoconference, and engaged in multiple cycles of deductive and inductive coding and analysis. Participants identified as educators and researchers (n = 12), as researchers (n = 1), or as educators (n = 1) from Canada (n = 8), the United States (n = 3), and Switzerland, Ireland, and China (n = 1, respectively). Eight participants actively used social media (i.e., creating/posting original content); six participants indicated passive use (i.e., reading/retweeting content). They discussed the importance of crafting a consumable message and social media identity to streamline the content shared. Social media's accessible, non-hierarchical nature may facilitate knowledge-sharing, whereas the potential spread of misinformation and technological requirements (e.g., internet access, country-specific restrictions on platforms) present barriers to uptake. Participants described using knowledge gained from social media as teaching tools, new research methodologies, new theoretical frameworks, and low-risk clinical interventions. Previous research has demonstrated how social media has empirically been used for diffusion or dissemination rather than as an active process of evidence uptake. Using knowledge translation frameworks, like the Knowledge to Action or Theoretical Domains frameworks, to inform social media-based knowledge sharing activities in health professions education is recommended.
A Qualitative Exploration of the use Social Media for Learning by Emergency Medicine Doctors

Abstract:Background The use of social media for learning amongst emergency medicine doctors has been increasing in recent years. However the role of social media as a learning modality in emergency medicine is not fully understood. This study aims to understand why and how emergency medicine doctors use social media for learning. Through this understanding this study aims to promote thought into design of future resources of learning on social media. Methods Emergency Medicine doctors of all grades were recruited from a single tertiary University Hospital in the United Kingdom. These participants were interviewed by semi structured interview following the principles of a Critical Incident Technique. Recordings were professionally transcribed. Transcriptions were then thematically analysed and coded to understand participants perspectives. Ethics was granted by Cardiff University, Wales. Results 20 emergency medicine doctors from Foundation Year 1 through to consultants were interviewed. Twitter (X) was the most popular platform; infographics were the most popular resource and 80% spent less than 3 hours per week on SM for learning. Key themes from the thematic analysis as to why emergency medicine doctors used social media for their learning included wanting to keep up to date ease of access discussion around topics, bench marking current practice, community, and recommendations. Only 10% used social media as part of their continued professional development and 65% stated social media had influenced their clinical practice Conclusions This unique qualitative explorative piece of work explores the use of social media for learning by emergency medicine doctors and how it is changing clinical practice. With the rapid growth and uptake in social media use for educational purposes. It is vital that all educators fully understand how it is being currently used as well as views of learners on this form of learning. This will allow us to further grow and develop this exciting area and maximise the educational impact on its users.

Abstract:Generation Z nursing students have a distinctive combination of attitudes, beliefs, social norms, and behaviors that will modify education and the nursing profession. This cross-sectional research study aimed to explore the social media use and characteristics of Generation Z in nursing students and to identify what were the most useful and preferred teaching methods during clinical training. Participants were Generation Z nursing degree students from a Spanish Higher Education Institution. A 41-item survey was developed and validated by an expert panel. The consecutive sample consisted of 120 students. Participants used social media for an average of 1.37 h (SD = 1.15) for clinical learning. They preferred, as teaching methods, linking mentorship learning to clinical experiences (x ̄ = 3.51, SD = 0.88), online tutorials or videos (x ̄ = 3.22, SD = 0.78), interactive gaming (x ̄ = 3.09, SD = 1.14), and virtual learning environments (x ̄ = 3, SD = 1.05). Regarding generational characteristics, the majority either strongly agreed or agreed with being high consumers of technology and cravers of the digital world (90.1%, n = 108 and 80%, n = 96). The authors consider it essential to expand our knowledge about the usefulness or possible use of teaching methods during clinical learning, which is essential at this moment because of the rapidly changing situation due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Exploring Digital Health Use and Opinions of University Students: Field Survey Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND: During university, students face some potentially serious health risks, and their lifestyle can have a direct effect on health and health behaviors later in life. Concurrently, university students are digital natives having easy access to the internet and new technologies. Digital health interventions offer promising new opportunities for health promotion, disease prevention, and care in this specific population. The description of the current use of and opinions on digital health among university students can inform future digital health strategies and interventions within university settings.OBJECTIVE: The aim of this exploratory study was to report on university students' use and opinions regarding information and communication technologies for health and well-being, taking into account sociodemographic and self-rated general and mental health correlates.METHODS: This field survey was conducted from March to April 2017. An informed consent form and a paper questionnaire were given to students aged 18 to 24 years in 4 university campuses in Bordeaux, France. The survey was formulated in 3 sections: (1) sociodemographic characteristics and self-rated general and mental health, (2) information about the use of digital health, and (3) opinions about digital health. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and tests of independence.RESULTS: A total of 59.8% (303/507 females) students completed the questionnaire. Concerning digital health use, 34.9% (174/498) had at least 1 health app mostly for physical activity (49.4%, 86/174) and general health monitoring (41.4%, 72/174,), but only 3.9% (20/507) of students had a wearable device. Almost all (94.8%, 450/476) had searched for Web-based health-related information at least once in the last 12 months. The most sought health-related topics were nutrition (68.1%, 324/476); pain and illnesses (64.5%, 307/476); and stress, anxiety, or depression (51.1%, 243/476). Although Wikipedia (79.7%, 357/448) and general health websites (349/448, 77.9%) were the most consulted sources, students considered institutional or official websites as the most credible sources (309/335, 92.2%). There were significant differences in digital health use by gender, field, and year of study. No statistically significant association was found between digital health use and self-rated general and mental health status. Concerning opinions on digital health, although 94.1% (475/505) of students estimated that today's digital health cannot replace traditional health services and medical consultations, 44.6% (207/464) of students declared that this could be possible in the future, provided that digital health interventions are promoted by institutional or official entities.CONCLUSIONS: University students are largely using the internet for health information seeking, but using less mobile health apps and very few wearable devices. Our data suggest that digital health has the potential for improving health and well-being at the university, especially if digital health interventions take into account students' profiles, interests, and needs.

Abstract:We found that 58% of the 107 Finnish registered dietitians utilised social media for professional purposes. Among them, 29% actively created content on social media. Facebook was predominantly used for colleague interaction; LinkedIn was used for networking with professionals from different fields; and Instagram, Twitter and YouTube were used for passively monitoring developments in the field of nutrition. Background With the widespread use of social media, understanding how healthcare professionals, such as dietitians, utilise these platforms for their work has gained interest. The aim of the current study was to describe how Finnish registered dietitians utilise various social media channels for professional purposes. The study also investigated the perceived social media skills of dietitians. Methods A cross‐sectional study was conducted using an online survey administered between December 2022 and February 2023. The participants were 107 Finnish registered dietitians who held a master's degree suitable for the profession. The Fisher's exact test was employed for categorical variables, whereas the Kruskal–Wallis test was used for ordinal variables with multiple groups. Results Out of the 107 participants, 62 (58%) reported using social media for professional purposes. The primary purposes across various social media channels were interaction with colleagues (80%) on Facebook, networking with professionals from other fields (86%) on LinkedIn and general monitoring of the field on Instagram (91%), Twitter (77%) and YouTube (58%). Abstract:Objective: To describe nurses' use of social media and examine the relationship between social media use, nurse characteristics, and job decision-making. Background: Social media shares information, connects, and influences thought. A gap remains in understanding how nurses use social media for professional purposes. Methods: A national survey of RNs and advanced practice RNs included demographics, questions about which social media platforms respondents use personally and professionally, and engagement activities on each platform. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, Cramér's V test, and binomial logistic regression. Results: Eight hundred twelve nurses participated. Platforms and activities used by nurses varied significantly by age, job title, and employment. The majority (61%) of respondents were satisfied or highly satisfied with their job, yet about one-third intended to leave their position or organization within 1 to 12 months. Conclusions: Nurse leaders should adopt a strategic, data-informed approach to leverage social media in attracting and retaining a diverse nursing workforce.

Abstract:Background: The number of people who access social networking sites continues to increase at an exponential rate. The use of technology is an essential skill for nursing professionals and its development represents a challenge in improving health education, promotion and care. The objective of this systematic review is to analyse the use of social networking sites by healthcare professionals as an intervention tool for evidence-based public health education. Methods: The protocol of this umbrella review was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42023407249). Searches were carried out in MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO (EBSCOhost), and Cochrane Library of Systematic Reviews, in February 2023. A narrative synthesis of the results was conducted. Results: 1896 articles were found, of which 15 reviews fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Social networks broadened the profession; they were YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram. The target population was mainly young professionals, and they came across different topic areas that addressed health education. Conclusions: It is important to have information backed by scientific evidence to make health decisions. Health professionals active on social networking sites have a unique opportunity to educate the public about health by sharing scientific evidence in an accessible and clear way, which helps to combat misinformation.

Abstract:Aim This study explored the knowledge and confidence levels of nursing academics in teaching both the theories and practical skills of digital health in undergraduate nursing programs. Design A cross‐sectional study. Methods A structured online survey was distributed among nursing academics across Australian universities. The survey included two sections: (1) the participants' demographics and their nursing and digital health teaching experience; (2) likert scales asking the participants to rate their knowledge and confidence to teach the theories and practical skills of four main themes; digital health technologies, information exchange, quality and digital professionalism. Results One hundred and nineteen nursing academics completed part one, and 97 individuals completed part two of the survey. Only 6% (n = 5) of the participants reported having formal training in digital health. Digital health was mainly taught as a module (n = 57, 45.9%), and assessments of theory or practical application of digital health in the nursing curriculum were uncommon, with 79 (69.9%) responding that there was no digital health assessment in their entry to practice nursing programs. Among the four core digital health themes, the participants rated high on knowledge of digital professionalism (22.4% significant knowledge vs. 5.9% no knowledge) but low on information exchange (30% significant knowledge vs. 28.3% no knowledge). Abstract:The rapid evolution of web-based information platforms and social media in particular, has made the internet the primary source of information for many health professional students. When thinking of how technology has changed nursing education, high-fidelity simulation and computerized testing are the two areas which immediately come to mind, though the technological revolution is actually much more comprehensive, with students (and instructors) using laptops, smart phones, and tablets in class to instantly access great stores of information on the internet. The study was designed to assess the perceived impacts of educational technologies for teaching and learning among students in selected schools of nursing in Ogun State. A quantitative descriptive research design was used to obtain information on the assessment of effects of educational technologies for teaching and learning in selected Schools of Nursing in Ogun State. A total of 198 students were used in the study; a simple random technique was used to select participants. A well-constructed questionnaire was used, data was collected and analysis was presented in tables and percentages. Results obtained from the study revealed that 80.3% agreed that technology in teaching breaks monotony/boredom and almost all respondents (94.9%) agreed that technology makes lessons interesting to comprehend. Also, 96.5% had previously heard about ICT and 58.1% agreed to have used it in their school. The study further revealed that 75% of the students believed there are only 25% availability of technological tools in the school for teaching and learning while 75% agreed that technological tools are not sufficiently available. Majority of the students also agreed that poor attitudes of both students and tutors toward ICT hinder its usage. Other barriers include lack of ICT infrastructures, lack of technical support, inadequate knowledge and poor accessibility to the internet which explains that there was no significant increase in the relationship for students' perception of ICT compared to availability of technological tools for learning and teaching in the schools. The p-value of 0.68 shows that there was a significant relationship between students’ perception of ICT and availability of technological tools for learning and teaching in the school. Thus, the study recommends provision of required ICT tools and training of nurse educators to facilitate ICT utilization in nursing education.
Nursing and healthcare students' experiences and use of e-learning in higher education

Abstract:Aim: This paper presents research on nursing and healthcare students' experiences and use of e-learning. Background: The inception of e-learning in higher education is supported by a policy background and technological developments, yet little is known of student experience and use in the United Kingdom. Methods: Conducted in 2007 and 2008, this study employed a mixed methods approach. An initial quantitative questionnaire was completed by 25 Higher Education Institutions and nine case study sites were visited. In the sites 41 students took part in focus groups and 35 staff were interviewed. Findings: Twenty-four Higher Education Institutions used a virtual learning environment and all respondents used e-learning to enable access to course materials and web-based learning resources. Three main themes were identified from student interviews, 'Pedagogic use'; 'Factors inhibiting use' and 'Facilitating factors to engagement'. Student's main engagement with e-learning was at an instructivist level and as a support to existing face-to-face modes of delivery. Student use of Web 2.0 was limited, although a number were using social software at home. Limited computer access, computing skills, technical issues and poor peer commitment affected use. Motivation and relevance to the course and practice, in addition to an appreciation of the potential for student-centred and flexible learning, facilitated use. Conclusion: There is scope to broaden the use of e-learning that would engage students in the social construction of knowledge. In addition, experiences of e-learning use could be improved if factors adversely affecting engagement were addressed.
Impact of liver transplantation on HRQOL in children less than 5 years old

Abstract:Abstract: Our primary goal was to assess health related quality of life (HRQOL) at transplantation and 1 yr after transplantation in pediatric liver transplant patients aged less than 5 years. We conducted a prospective longitudinal study of HRQOL in pediatric liver transplant recipients, aged less than 5 years to define the impact of liver transplantation on HRQOL and identify factors that predict HRQOL after transplantation. The infant toddler health status questionnaire (ITHQ) was completed at the time of listing for liver transplantation and at 6 and 12 months after liver transplantation. The primary outcome measures were the subscale scores that comprise ITHQ. The mean age (±s.e.m.) of the enrolled patients (n = 45) at transplantation was 1.4 (±1.2) yr. Thirty‐eight (84%) of the enrolled patients completed the study. The highest mean baseline scores of 78.6 (±3.3) were for global mental health (GlobalMH). ITHQ subscale scores increased steadily after transplantation. The greatest increase was in the first 6 months after transplant. At 1 yr after transplantation, there were significant increases in all of the ITHQ subscale scores except for GlobalMH. ITHQ subscales were similar for patients who received LDLT compared with those who received cadaver donor liver transplantation (CDLT) at baseline and a year after transplant. Time elapsed as transplantation was a significant predictor of functional health in all of the models generated. Scores for general health (GH), global health (GGH), parental time–impact (PT) and parental time–emotion (PE) were higher for male children. Family cohesion (FC) improved with time elapsed since transplant and increased number of inpatient days. HRQOL improves after transplantation in all of our patients irrespective of the donor type. Functional health scores were higher in patients with normal serum bilirubin at 1 yr post‐transplant. Assessment of HRQOL should be an integral part of care for liver transplant patients and their caregivers.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a set of recommendations for using social media as a tool for participant recruitment in survey-based medical education research. Drawing from a limited but growing body of literature, we discuss the opportunities and challenges inherent to social media recruitment. This article builds on the authors' previous educator's blueprints about survey design and administration. We highlight the advantages of social media, including its wide reach, cost-effectiveness, and capability to access diverse and geographically dispersed populations, which can significantly enhance the representativeness of research samples. However, we also caution against potential pitfalls, such as ethical concerns, sampling bias, and the fluid nature of social media platforms. Our recommendations are informed by both empirical evidence and best practices, aiming to provide researchers with practical advice for effectively leveraging social media in survey-based medical education research. We emphasize the importance of selecting suitable platforms and engaging with targeted demographics thoughtfully. By sharing our insights, we hope to assist fellow medical education researchers in navigating the complexities of social media recruitment, thereby enriching the quality and impact of survey-based research in this field.

Abstract:In a teacher education context, this study considers the use of social media for building a professional online presence and learning network. This article provides an overview of uses of social media in teacher education, presents a case study of key processes in relation to professional online presence and learning networks, and highlights issues and challenges for wider consideration. Specific practical illustrations are provided, relating experiences when starting out with social media, integrating coursework challenges for student teachers, and considering feedback and future planning. Social media is used in teacher education for sharing content, discussing, and collaborating. There are challenges and risks with social media in an academic context. Students require differentiated scaffolding depending on their expertise and confidence. In terms of social implications, professionals are warned to safeguard online reputation, while making proactive use of social media to enhance learning networks.
