Abstract:With the gradual expansion of the market scale of lithium-ion batteries, the importance of comprehensive recycling of lithium-ion battery cathode materials has become increasingly prominent. In this work, a comprehensive recovery of leachate from spent NCM cathode materials was established with the microextraction equipment. In the process of extraction, we established an economical and efficient co-extraction method of MnCo-Ni to separate with Li ions in the leachate. After investigating the extraction effects of single extractant of D2EHPA and Cyanex272, the co-extraction pattern of the mixed extractant was summarized by exploring the correlation of extraction efficiency and selectivity with equilibrium pH, extractant concentration ratio and twophase ratio. The mechanism of saponification and extraction with the mixed extractant was explained based on the IR spectral results. After separately exploring the stripping process and the deep recovery process of Ni, the metal ion of lithium was recycled via precipitation. The regenerated lithium carbonate reached 99.2% purity with uniform particle size distribution. Leveraging the microextraction equipment with greater mass transfer coefficient, a comprehensive extractive recovery process of Mn-Co-Ni was established and realized with the recovery efficiency of Mn, Co, Ni and Li of 99.9%, 98.6%, 99.5% and 90%, respectively. The regenerated metal solution of Mn-Co-Ni can be further used to prepare the precursors of regenerated cathode materials.
Separation of Valuable Metals in The Recycling of Lithium Batteries via Solvent Extraction

Abstract:With the development trend and technological progress of lithium batteries, the battery market is booming, which means that the consumption demand for lithium batteries has increased significantly, and, therefore, a large number of discarded lithium batteries will be generated accordingly. Solvent extraction is a promising approach because it is simple. Solvent extraction is low in time consumption and is easy to industrialize. This paper is focused on the selective recovery of cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), and manganese (Mn) contained in leachate obtained by digesting a cathodic material from spent lithium batteries with hydrochloric acid. After leaching the cathodic material, Mn was selectively extracted from leachate by using solvent extraction with D2EHPA diluted in kerosene in an optimized condition. Afterward, Co was extracted from the Mn-depleted aqueous phase using Cyanex272 diluted in kerosene. Finally, the raffinate obtained via a stripping reaction with H2SO4 was used in the Ni extraction experiments. Cyanex272 extractant was employed to separate Ni and Li. The process can recover more than 93% of Mn, 90% of Co, and 90% of Ni. The crucial material recovered in the form of sulfuric acid solutions can be purified and returned to the manufacturer for use. This process proposes a complete recycling method by effectively recovering Mn, Co, and Ni with solvent extraction, to contribute to the supply of raw materials and to reduce tensions related to mineral resources for the production of lithium batteries.

Abstract:The recycling of lithium-ion batteries is important due to limited metallic resources and environmental protection. However, most current studies aim at only extracting valuable components from cathode materials, and the lithium in the anode is usually ignored due to its low concentration. Herein, we develop an integrated recycling strategy for both cathode and anode materials. Batteries are disassembled, and lithium in lithiated graphite is extracted in water and converted to Li2CO3 after absorbing CO2 from the air, which is then used for the direct regeneration of LiCoO2 and LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2, while the degraded graphite is regenerated by the delithiation and activation. LiCoO2 with different degrees of failure can retrieve a capacity of 130 mAh/g, while degraded graphite can realize a capacity of 370 mAh/g after regeneration, values which are comparable to commercial materials. Importantly, no external lithium salt is necessary, and water is the only reagent used during regeneration of the cathode material.

Abstract:Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries is of great importance for environmental protection and resusing resources. This work proposes a green and environmentally friendly recycling strategy of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode material for spent batteries by an electrochemical method. In the designed electrolysis cell, the produced gaseous species from oxidation of solvent molecules occurring at the interfaces between electrode/cathode materials and active particles/binder exert the force to separate bonded particles from current collector. Meanwhile, the efficient leaching of lithium (>98%) into electrolyte was achieved under an electric field without additional leaching process. The Al can also be recovered in the form of metallic foil. The separation of active material, the selective leaching of lithium, and recovery of Al foil are conducted by one-step electrolysis in a short operating cycle. The remaining transition metals in residues were reused to synthesize LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 material. As the cathode material, the regenerated active material delivers an initial capacity of 161 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C and 88.3% remains after 200 cycles. The superior cycling stability is comparable to the unused commercial batteries. This innovative approach can be readily extended to recover other types of cathode materials for spent lithium-ion batteries.

Efficient Recovery of Value Metals from Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries by Combining Deep Eutectic Solvents and Coextraction

Abstract:The advancement of the electric vehicle industry has inevitably resulted in the increased production and numerous scraps of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), among which the nickel cobalt manganese ternary material has become the fastest growing and largest proportion material in the lithium battery cathode material market. Therefore, a practical and effective method to recycle spent LIBs must be established. In this study, an efficient recycling method was proposed to leach value metals from cathode materials via the excellent solubility of deep eutectic solvents to metals, and regenerated LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 was prepared via coextraction and coprecipitation. 91.63% of Li, 92.52% of Co, 94.92% of Ni, and 95.47% of Mn are leached from the recycled cathode electrode. The kinetic experiments indicated that the leaching process fitted well to the shrinking core model controlled by chemical reactions. The value metals could be extracted with high efficiencies by adjusting the operating parameters in the step of coextraction. Moreover, the electrochemical tests of the regenerated ternary material revealed that the material had an excellent electrochemical performance. The proposed method, which can realize the sustainable development of spent LIBs, has great potential in the deep recycling of spent LIBs.

Novel electrochemical process for recycling of valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Effective recovery of Li, Co, Ni and Mn from cathode materials of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has become a global concern. In this study, electrolysis of copper sulfate to produce sulfuric acid and electrons were utilized to recover Li, Co, Ni and Mn from spent LIBs. The obtained results showed that 93 % of Ni, 91 % of Co, 89 % of Mn and 94 % of Li were leached and 99 % of Cu was deposited during leaching process by adopting the 0.225 mol/L of copper sulfate with a solid/liquid ratio of 15 g/L at a current density of 50 mA/m2 and 80 °C for 4.5 h. Then, a current efficiency of 72 % for the cathode and 30 % for the anode was achieved at a current density of 40 mA/m2, 70 °C and pH 2.5 during electrodeposition process. The Ni-Co deposition followed the principle of anomalous codeposition and the complete deposition time of Co, Ni and Mn were 3 h, 9 h and 10 h, respectively. Eventually, the Ni, Co, Mn, Li and Cu can be recovered as Ni-Co alloy, MnO2 and Li2CO3 and Cu metals with the corresponding recovery rates of 99.40 %, 91.00 %, 90.68 %, 85.59 % and 89.55 %, respectively. This study proposes a promising strategy for recycling cathode materials from spent LIBs without addition of chemical reductants and acids.

Abstract:Recycling of spent lithium ion batteries (LIBs) is an urgent task in the view of environmental protection, resources reuse and sustainable development of battery industry. Our work presents a new method for recovery of Al foils and cathode materials from LIBs via a simple process. The concentrated sulfuric acid (18.4 M H2SO4) solution are used as both separation and leaching agent. The complete separation of cathode materials from Al foils and the complete leaching of Li are achieved simultaneously after leaching for 1 h at 80 °C and solid/liquid ratio of 800 g L−1. Under these conditions, the leaching efficiencies of Ni, Co and Mn reached 25.6%, 23.2% and 18.3%, respectively, and the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder is partially decomposed. The concentrated sulfuric acid destroys the structures of cathode materials and PVDF but prevents the Al dissolution by formation of the passivation film, which contributes to the separation of cathode materials from Al foils and no loss of Al foil. After removal of Al foils and adding the 4.5 vol% H2O2 solution to further leach the remaining suspension for 70 min at 70 °C, and the metals of Ni, Co and Mn in the cathode materials are totally leached into the solution. The amount of H2SO4 consumed by leaching 1 kg cathode pieces was 23 mol, which is less than the required acid consumption for the traditional acid leaching process. The leaching solution is precipitated step by step to obtain high purity Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3(OH)2 and Li2CO3. The obtained Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3(OH)2 and Li2CO3 are regenerated to LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 materials with excellent electrochemical performance.

Abstract:In this paper, a potential method for the closed-loop recovery and regeneration of cathode materials from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is developed to greatly simplify the regeneration process, which successfully removes metal impurities from spent LIBs and synthesis of layered oxide LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 materials. First, the valuable metals (Ni, Co, Mn, and Li) in spent LIB materials are transformed into water-soluble ions based on the synergy between dl-malic acid and glucose. Subsequently, the residual Fe impurities are successfully decreased from the leaching solution by oxidation-precipitation. Prior to the synthesis process, valuable metal ions are immediately precipitated using oxalic acid as a precipitant from the leaching solution into Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3C2O4·nH2O with extremely uniform size particles. Furthermore, the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 materials with an excellent crystal structure are successfully synthesized by adding Li2CO3 as the lithium source after roasting at 500 °C for 4 h and then at 950 °C for 12 h. The regenerated LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 materials demonstrate reliable electrochemical performance. This work clarifies a potential method for the closed-loop recovery resource sustainability of spent LIB materials.

Preferential Extraction of Lithium from Spent Cathodes and the Regeneration of Layered Oxides for Li/Na-Ion Batteries

Abstract:The preferentially selective extraction of Li+ from spent layered transition metal oxide (LiMO2, M = Ni, Co, Mn, etc.) cathodes has attracted extensive interest based on economic and recycling efficiency requirements. Presently, the efficient recycling of spent LiMO2 is still challenging due to the element loss in multistep processes. Here, we developed a facile strategy to selectively extract Li+ from LiMO2 scraps with stoichiometric H2SO4. The proton exchange reaction could be driven using temperature, accompanied by the generation of soluble Li2SO4 and MOOH precipitates. The extraction mechanism includes a two-stage evolution, including dissolution and ion exchange. As a result, the extraction rate of Li+ is over 98.5% and that of M ions is less than 0.1% for S-NCM. For S-LCO, the selective extraction result is even better. Finally, Li2CO3 products with a purity of 99.68% can be prepared from the Li+-rich leachate, demonstrating lithium recovery efficiencies as high as 95 and 96.3% from NCM scraps and S-LCO scraps, respectively. In the available cases, this work also represents the highest recycling efficiency of lithium, which can be attributed to the high leaching rate and selectivity of Li+, and even demonstrates the lowest reagent cost. The regenerated LiNi0.5Co0.24Mn0.26O2 and Na1.01Li0.001Ni0.38Co0.18Mn0.44O2 cathodes also deliver a decent electrochemical performance for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) and Na-ion batteries (NIBs), respectively. Our current work offers a facile, closed-loop, and scalable strategy for recycling spent LIB cathodes based on the preferentially selective extraction of Li+, which is superior to the other leaching technology in terms of its cost and recycling yield.

Abstract:The recycling of cathode materials for spent NCM has always been a major concern for the energy industry. However, among the current processing methods, the general leaching efficiency of Li is between 85% and 93%, with much room for improvement. The recovery of Ni, Co and Mn requires a high cost of secondary purification. In this study, to recycle the NCM cathode material, a route of sulphated reduction roasting – selective Li water leaching – efficiency acid leaching of Ni, Co, Mn – extraction separation – crystallisation was adopted. The results showed that after roasting (a temperature of 800 °C, a reaction time of 90 min, a carbon content of 26%, and a sulphuric acid addition of n H2SO4 :n Li = 0.85), Li water leaching efficiency was 98.6%, followed by acid leaching of Ni, Co and Mn at around 99%. Mn, Co were extracted with Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid and 2-Ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester respectively to obtain Ni, Co, Mn solutions, which eventually were crystallized for manganese sulphate, cobalt sulphate, lithium carbonate and nickel sulphate products, with high purity of 99.40%, 98.95%, 99.10%, and 99.95%. The results of this study improved the leaching efficiency of Li and were closely linked to the actual industrial preparation of Ni, Co and Mn sulphates, providing a feasible and promising basis for spent NCM cathode materials industrial recovery. Abstract:The environmentally friendly and efficient recovery of valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) can mitigate environmental pollution and enhance resource utilization efficiency. This study proposed a process for coating spent NCM cathode powder (LiNi x Co y Mn z O2) on graphite sheets for the electrochemical leaching of lithium. Direct electrooxidation method for leaching from the prepared electrode sheets can achieve the selective leaching rate of Li+ close to 100% in Na2CO3 solution. In addition, the electron transfer mechanism was investigated during the electrooxidation process. Under optimal conditions, the same electrolyte solution was electrolyzed 40 times to enrich lithium by replacing fresh electrode sheets. Since there was almost no leaching of other metals, there was no need to add precipitants to obtain battery-grade Li2CO3 through evaporation and concentration. This strategy not only circumvents the risk of secondary pollution caused by the use of a large number of leaching agents but also shortens the lithium recycling process.

Abstract:Blended cathode material for lithium-ion battery has been widely applied in electric vehicles, but effectively recovering valuable metals from the leaching liquor of blended cathode material is difficult due to the high content of manganese. In this study, an effective approach for recovering valuable metals from high-manganese leaching liquor of spent blended cathode materials is proposed. Firstly, 97.5% nickel and 100% cobalt in high-manganese leaching liquor are co-precipitated by sodium ethyl-xanthate under the optimum conditions of pH=5, 2 h, 50 °C and the dosage of sodium ethyl xanthate of 55 g·L-1. Then, over 95% nickel in precipitate is selectively leached into solution while almost 100% cobalt is still left in precipitate through a two-step ammonia leaching under the conditions of 2 mol·L-1 ammonia, 50 g·L-1 ammonium sulfate, L/S=8 ml·g-1, 1 h and 40 °C. Finally, the manganese and lithium left in leaching liquor are separated by solvent extraction. Over 99% manganese is effectively extracted and separated from lithium on the conditions of 40% vol D2EHPA, pH=5, 25 °C, the ratio of organic to aqueous (O:A)=1.25 and extraction time of 10 min. The whole recovering process is facile and can help effectively recycle lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese from spent blended cathode materials.

Abstract:Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) can save mineral resources and eliminate the environmental hazards. This work proposes a new strategy for an efficient and green separation of valuable metals in spent Li(Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3)O2 (NCM) LIBs. Through one-step controllable electrochemical precipitation, the complete separation of Li from Ni, Co and Mn in the acidic leachate solution of spent NCM materials and the preparation of NCM precursor are achieved simultaneously without addition of any separation or precipitation agents. The OH− produced from electrolytic system itself combines with the Ni2+, Co2+ and Mn2+ in leachate to form the co-precipitates of M(OH)x (M=Ni, Co and Mn). The results indicate that the precipitation efficiencies of Ni2+, Co2+ and Mn2+ are close to 100% under the conditions of applied voltage of 32 V, current density of 0.56 A cm−2, electrode spacing of 12 cm and electrolysis time of 1 h. The left Li-containing solution is evaporated to obtain LiOH. These two hydroxides can be used directly to regenerate new NCM cathode material with excellent electrochemical performances, which the capacity remains 130.1 mAh g−1 with a capacity retention of 87.55% after cycling 300 times at 1C. Compared with the traditional recycling technology, the electrochemical precipitation strategy significantly reduces steps of the recycling process.

Abstract:The prosperity of the lithium-ion battery industry has raised deep concerns about spent batteries. Recently, much attention has been focused on the development and advancement of lithium battery recycling. Deep eutectic solvents are efficient, environmentally friendly, and economical leaching solvents with great potential for the recovery of cathode materials from spent lithium-ion batteries. However, to date, deep eutectic solvents have been considered a disposable agent for lithium-ion battery recycling, resulting in organic waste after a single recycling. Here, we demonstrate a reusable deep eutectic solvent based on maleic acid (MA) and ethylene glycol (EG), designed to recycle LiCoO 2 cathode materials from spent lithium-ion batteries. With a high loading capacity (59 g/L), the leaching efficiencies of Co and Li by MA:EG are 98.3 % and 98.4 % respectively. MA:EG can be refreshed by adding oxalic acid as a precipitant. Even after 4 cycles, the leaching efficiency of Co is still 90 % and the average recovery efficiency of Co products is over 96.5 %. Lithium is present in a high concentration and is also recovered in the form of oxalate. This work provides a novel and environmentally friendly recycling route that can economically and efficiently recover the valuable metals Li and Co from spent lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Traditional recycling technology for spent lithium-ion batteries faces the issue of low Li recovery due to the considerable Li loss during leaching and further purification operations. To improve the Li recovery, high-pressure acid leaching using H 2 SO 4 for Li preferential liberation and the subsequent purification were systematically investigated. Experimental results showed that 97.6% of Li was preferentially leached with about 2% of Ni, Co, and Mn co-leached, and a leaching solution with a Li + concentration of 21.46 g/L was obtained. Further characterization indicated that most of Li was first liberated and exchanged by the proton (H + ), then the high reaction temperature induced the hydrolysis of the co-leached Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , and Mn 2+ and generated extra H + prompted a deeper liberation of Li from the undissolved NCM structures. Additionally, the high-purity Li 2 CO 3 was achieved via a synergistic extraction by D2EHPA and 4PC for the deep removal and recovery of co-leached Ni/Co/Mn followed by carbonation. Compared with the traditional end-Li-recovery method, the proposed method possesses the advantages of a short Li extraction process, high recovery, and low cost. Moreover, the preferential leaching of Li provided an opportunity for a novel hydrometallurgical process to recover spent lithium-ion batteries that consists of Li preliminary leaching, Ni–Co–Mn material leaching, precipitation of Fe/Al, and selective extraction of F, Ni, Co, and Mn was not separated that shorten the flowsheet in this process, dramatically reduced reagent consumption and wastewater generation.

Electrolytic Separation and Reuse of Active Materials from Discarded Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:In this study, the barrel plating tank used for electroplating was used as a reaction device for the first time, which has wide adaptability and generates friction to improve electrolysis efficiency. At the same time, a method is proposed to separate cathode materials and aluminum foil under low-voltage conditions, allowing for the preferential recovery of 99% of Li and resynthesize high nickel cathode materials. During the electrolysis process, the cathode material and aluminum foils were completely peeled off without disaggregation. The effects of parameters such as electrolysis voltage, electrolyte species, electrolyte concentration, and electrolysis temperature on the separation of cathode material and aluminum foil and lithium dissolution were investigated. The results proved that under optimal conditions, the dissolution rate of Mn, Co, and Ni in the electrolyte is not more than 1%, while the dissolution rate of Li is more than 99%, achieving the selective separation of valuable metals (Co, Li, Mn, and Ni). Na2CO3 was added to the filtered electrolyte to generate Li2CO3, which was then purified to obtain battery-grade Li2CO3. The filter residue was acid-leached, and the filtrate after acid-leaching was synthesized by the co-precipitation method. The ternary precursor was synthesized by solid-phase synthesis with the precursor and battery-grade Li2CO3 to prepare a LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 material with excellent electrochemical performance.
Recovery of valuable metals and modification of cathode materials from spent lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Improper disposal of used lithium-ion batteries will cause serious environmental pollution and waste of resources. A closed-loop recycling process based on hydrothermal leaching and co-doping is developed to recycle valuable metals by regenerating cathode material from spent lithium-ion batteries. Valuable metals in scrapped cathode material are efficiently leached out by hydrothermal leaching with a lower concentration of H2SO4 solution. In this work, 93.11% of Ni, 92.84% of Co and 90.18% of Mn can be leached out under the optimal hydrothermal leaching condition (0.5 M H2SO4, 0.1 M Na2SO3, 20 g/L, 120 ℃ and 8 h). The Na-F co-doped materials Li1−xNaxNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2−xFx (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06) regenerated by co–precipitation are studied in this paper. The micro substitution of Na for Li can compensate for the effect of fluorine doping on capacity reduction. Na-F co-doping can stabilize the crystal structure, reduce the cation mixing degree and enhance the electrochemical performance. The material with a doping amount of 0.02 exhibits the best crystal structure, the lowest degree of cation mixing, the lowest electrochemical polarization and the minimal resistance, playing the highest discharge capacity (176.37 mAh g−1) with the highest capacity retention (93.07%) at 0.2 C after 100 cycles.

Abstract:With the goal of carbon neutrality, increasing end-of-life spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is inevitable owing to the rapidly growing number of electric vehicles worldwide, which brings management and environmental problems. Nevertheless, the scarcity of valuable metals used in LIBs and the potential value of recycling them have attracted increased interest in recovering spent LIBs. The traditional methods for recycling spent LIBs, pyrometallurgy, and hydrometallurgy cause energy waste and environmental problems. Herein, green reagents, ascorbic acid, is introduced to reduce the amount of strong acid and help in-site precipitate the ternary precursor in this novel process for the recovery of spent LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523). A reduction reaction caused by ascorbic acid occurs on the surface of the material, determining the chemical reaction that controls the leaching process and enhances leaching efficiency. The ternary precursor is formed in-site by oxidative precipitation in the leaching solution, which exists ascorbic acid. The regenerated NCM523 shows a high discharge capacity (158.5 mAh g−1 at 0.1C), and the capacity retention rate is 83.7% after 100 cycles. This ascorbic acid coordinated leaching in the sulfuric acid system following in-site precipitation is an environmentally friendly treatment for spent LIBs, which has the potential to be applied in the industry.
