Abstract:This study made use of four asynchronously coupled numerical simulations (four Eulerian and four Lagrangian) to investigate an event of a sudden arrival of more than 50 tons of marine litter on the northeastern Brazilian coast. This material mysteriously landed on several beaches, compromising water quality and impacting tourism, therefore raising serious concerns about its origin from local authorities. A total of 87,030 virtual particles were released and had their trajectories investigated, as well as their relationship with major physical forcings, including tides, winds and the North Brazil Under Current (NBUC). The virtual particles followed predominantly towards the north/northwest, mainly due to the presence of the NBUC and southeast trade winds. This pattern indicated that the flow of marine surface litter followed the continental shelf northwards, and the role of winds was key in providing the conditions for oceanic originated material to being deposit along the coastline. This study provided important insights about the regional circulation and main forcings that act in the transport and deposition of floating materials that reach the shallow shelf of the Brazilian northeast. Further investigation on the variability of these forcings along the seasonal cycle seems to be extremely important and should be undertaken soon.

Abstract:<p>The CleanAtlantic project (http://www.cleanatlantic.eu/) aims to protect biodiversity and ecosystem services in the Atlantic Area by improving knowledge and capabilities to monitor, prevent and remove (macro) marine litter. The project will also contribute to raise awareness and change attitudes among stakeholders. Marine litter originates from diverse sources (land and sea-based origins) and has no frontiers as the coastal and ocean circulation turns it into a transnational issue that demands collaborative work and coordination. The need for transnational consistent approaches is at the heart of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) implementation, which requires consistency in terms of marine litter assessment, monitoring and development of programme of measures. This modeling objective, within the CleanAtlantic project, is fully aligned with the collective action n&#186;55 of the OSPAR Regional Plan, which aims to develop sub-regional or regional maps of hotspots of floating litter. These maps will be based on mapping of circulation of floating masses of marine litter, identification of hotspots of accumulation on coastal areas and the role of prevailing currents and winds. The biggest challenge to marine litter modeling is the heterogeneity of the actual litter particles spanning a wide range of different physical properties such as size, density or shape, among others. This, together with a strong interaction with the medium, through processes such as degradation, sinking, beaching, etc and an inherent sensitiveness to initial conditions due to chaotic advection by ocean currents, the effect of wind and waves and the necessary time and space scales to resolve ocean transport, shows how intricate marine litter modeling can be. The number of free parameters, absence of well-known initial conditions and precise equations set to describe all the processes involved require the use large ensembles of simulations to explore a range of possible scenarios, in order to derive useful information about the motion of marine litter. &#160;As part of the project, the MARETEC modeling group at the Instituto Superior T&#233;cnico &#8211; Universidade de Lisboa in collaboration with the University of Santiago de Compostela, developed a Lagrangian transport model, MOHID Lagrangian. This tool can be applied to forecast the formation of retention areas (hotspots) with the highest probability for litter accumulation in any particular region. The abilities of this open-source lagrangian tool include its easy implementation, robustness, computing efficiency being able to simulate millions of particles in short times, the capacity to use any Eulerian circulation fields from other models, as well as the ability to simulate different types of lagrangian particles. The capabilities of the models to predict the origin of marine litter accumulated on the seafloor and coastal areas were assessed and the connection of major rivers with sinks of marine litter during heavy raining conditions was studied. When appropriate, models were calibrated by matching real and predicted marine litter accumulations locations on the shoreline. The area of influence of land and sea-based marine litter sources was assessed and different scenarios of mitigation measures will be evaluated.</p>

Abstract:The escalation of litter accumulation in aquatic environments is recognized as an emerging global concern. Although rivers represent the main conduits for land-based waste into the oceans, the spatial dynamics of litter accumulation in these systems remain poorly investigated, especially after hydro-climatic extreme events. Floods have been identified as major drivers of litter mobilization, including macroplastics, within rivers. However, predicting flood-induced litter accumulation along riverbanks is complex due to the cumulative interplay of multiple environmental (geomorphological and riparian) and anthropogenic factors. Using empirical data collected from 14 stream reaches in two Northern Atlantic rivers in Portugal, our study evaluates which factors, among geomorphological, riparian, and anthropogenic descriptors, best drive riverside litter accumulation after floods. Taking into account the longitudinal gradient and the spatial heterogeneity of the studied reaches, our study enhances how the accumulation and characteristics (type, size) of riverside litter vary across a rural-urban continuum. Our model reveals that the combination of the human population density and the stream slope at river reach showed the highest explanatory power for the accumulation of riverside litter. Our findings indicate that litter tends to be retained close to the source, even under flood conditions. We also found that the structure of riparian vegetation showed low explanatory power for litter accumulation. However, riparian trapping could be influenced by litter input (density and type) which varies with anthropogenic activities. This work highlights the importance of gathering field data to identify critical areas of riverside litter accumulation within river basins. Our findings can further support environmental managers in designing and implementing effective cleanup campaigns and implementing plastic recovery strategies at specific areas. Nevertheless, it is crucial to enhance coordinated efforts across the entire value chain to reduce plastic pollution, promote innovative approaches for plastic litter valorization, and establish effective prevention pathways.

Abstract:This study evaluated the stranding and impact of garbage on the traditional fishing of a subtropical coastal system of the South Atlantic, the Bay of Santa Catarina Island (BSCI). Two types of fishing nets, drift nets (N = 5) and purse seine (N = 5), and the perception of the fishing community (N = 50) were the basis for the qualitative and quantitative analysis. All the fishers removed garbage from their fishing gear, with 47.4 (± 15.34) items/net for drift gillnets net and 44.8 (± 15.39) items/net for the purse seine, weighing 0.51 items (± 0.14) kg/net and 1.23 (± 1.05) kg/net, respectively. Plastic represented 89% of the collected material, mainly in the form of bags and packaging. The traditional fishing community has had its fishing impacted by garbage stranding, affecting the health and economy of its traditional fishers. The amount of entangled garbage did not differ between fishing gear types, but the plastic fragment was more present in deeper fishing (purse seine), while the larger plastics occurred in shallow fishing (drift gillnets) in the water column. This may be related to the disposal of garbage along the water column and in the sediment and to the fishing mode, such as the fishing depth and the time the net is in the water. The increase in garbage in fishing gear is associated with urban sprawl and tourist seasonality. Added to this are the meteorological and oceanographic conditions of the system, with the most urbanized areas (higher pressure) being in regions of lower hydrodynamics, favoring the accumulation of plastic. Urgent strategies must be implemented, aimed at protecting the marine environment, in addition to preserving the culture of the fishing community in the region.

The role of hydrodynamic fluctuations and wind intensity on the distribution of plastic debris on the sandy beaches of Paraná River, Argentina

Abstract:Plastic in the environment is considered an emerging pollutant of global concern. In spite of intensive research, many questions remain open, such as the processes that drive the deposition and remobilization of plastic debris on river beaches. The objectives of this study were: i) to analyze the influence of the natural hydrological fluctuations and wind intensity on the distribution of mesoplastic (0.5-2.5 cm) and macroplastic (>2.5 cm) debris in beach sediments of a large river, ii) to describe the type of plastic debris found and iii) to explore potential relations between the number of items and weight of macro- and mesoplastics. Our results suggest that, during lowering water levels, flow removes the plastic debris and transports it further downstream. Conversely, when the beach sediments remain exposed during long periods, the plastic debris accumulates considerably. Nevertheless, the influence of wind intensity on plastic debris transport was comparatively negligible. In other words, in our study the water flow had a greater capacity to remobilize and transport plastic debris than the wind. The most abundant mesoplastic items were foam, hard plastic, film and small fragments of fishing line. The dominant macroplastic items recorded were pieces of fishing line (nylon) and cigarette filters (cellulose acetate), typically discarded by beach users. Other items found in large quantities were soft packaging elements (expanded polystyrene), hard plastic containers (polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate) and beverage bottles (polyethylene terephthalate), typical items of domestic use in the Paraná River region. Finally, we found that the density of macroplastic items is highly correlated to the density of mesoplastic items, serving as surrogate for further estimations. Our results could help to develop better mitigation strategies in seasonal riverscapes, based on the influence of the hydrological cycle and the characteristics of the most abundant meso- and macroplastics.

Abstract:Litter pollution on beaches is a growing problem worldwide that threatens marine species and tourism experiences. It is important to establish a virtual geographic environment by simulating the spatiotemporal pattern of litter to enhance our understanding of the spatiotemporal patterns of geographic environmental elements. This study visualized the spatiotemporal data of litter by type on a total of 1,762 UK beaches on the coastline and offshore islands from 2000 to 2016. Ten major sources of litter-including plastic/polystyrene, rubber, cloth, paper/cardboard, wood (machined), metal, glass, pottery/ceramics, and sanitary and medical items-were investigated in detail. The statistical analysis showed that the overall litter concentration was largely related to the intensity of human activity. Spatially, the hot spots were concentrated in the south, while the cold spots were mostly concentrated along the northern coast of the UK. The significance of the hot and cold spots tended to increase over time. Hot spot and cold spot distribution comparisons of 10 litter types were also conducted. Our results vividly depict the litter distribution in marine environments based on type. A deepened understanding provides clues concerning how to prevent the increasing accumulation of litter and clean litter in marine environments.
Relationships between marine litter and type of coastal area, in Northeast Atlantic sandy beaches

Abstract:Marine litter represents a threat to the marine environment, being estimated that around eight million items are discarded daily in the ocean. Monitoring marine debris became a relevant topic of research as marine litter is one of the descriptors of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, for European Union's member states. Nevertheless, the patterns and processes governing the disposal of waste in coastal areas are still not clear. Our study relates characteristics of eleven coastal areas in Portugal (urbanization, slope, distance to an estuary, length, and type of substrate) to the type and abundance of marine litter found. A total of 7743 items were identified, with the main types of litter found being plastic (71.2%), paper (16.3%), and sanitary waste (9.1%). A clear spatial distribution pattern was observed, with more litter items recorded in the zone corresponding to the high tide line (2.3 items m-2). It was also verified that both beaches and seasons influenced the amount of litter found. Plastic, the dominant marine litter group, was abundant on the vast majority of beaches. It was possible to identify litter with land and sea origins. The litter with land origin came mainly from sanitary and sewage-related waste while the litter with marine origin came mainly from fisheries, including aquaculture.

Abstract:Abstract Marine plastic debris floating on the ocean surface is a major environmental problem. However, its distribution in the ocean is poorly mapped, and most of the plastic waste estimated to have entered the ocean from land is unaccounted for. Better understanding of how plastic debris is transported from coastal and marine sources is crucial to quantify and close the global inventory of marine plastics, which in turn represents critical information for mitigation or policy strategies. At the same time, plastic is a unique tracer that provides an opportunity to learn more about the physics and dynamics of our ocean across multiple scales, from the Ekman convergence in basin-scale gyres to individual waves in the surfzone. In this review, we comprehensively discuss what is known about the different processes that govern the transport of floating marine plastic debris in both the open ocean and the coastal zones, based on the published literature and referring to insights from neighbouring fields such as oil spill dispersion, marine safety recovery, plankton connectivity, and others. We discuss how measurements of marine plastics (both in situ and in the laboratory), remote sensing, and numerical simulations can elucidate these processes and their interactions across spatio-temporal scales.

Abstract:The Mediterranean Sea is one of the most critically polluted areas due to its semi-enclosed structure and its highly anthropized shoreline. Rivers are significant vectors for pollutant transfers from the continental to the marine environment. In this context, a 3D Lagrangian simulation of the dispersion of riverine microplastics (MPs) was performed, which included the application of a recently developed model that reassessed the MP fluxes discharged by rivers. MP physical properties from river samples were further investigated to approximate vertical displacement in modeled ocean currents. The use of a high-resolution circulation model, integrating Stokes drift, turbulent diffusion, and MP sinking and rising velocities, enabled us to establish stock balances. Our simulation suggested that 65% of river inputs may be made of floating MPs drifting in the surface layer and 35% of dense MPs sinking to deeper layers. The Eastern Mediterranean tends to accumulate floating MPs, primarily originating from the Western Mediterranean Basin, where major river sources are concentrated. After 2 years of simulation, modeled stranding sequestered 90% of the MP inputs, indicating relatively short average residence times from a few days to months at most for particles at sea. Although spatial distribution patterns stabilized after this period and a steady state may have been approached, the surface concentrations we modeled generally remained below field observations. This suggested either an underestimation of sources (rivers and unaccounted sources), by a factor of 6 at most, or an overestimation of MP withdrawal through stranding, to be reduced from 90 to around 60% or less if unaccounted sinks were considered.

Transition paths of marine debris and the stability of the garbage patches

Abstract:We used transition path theory (TPT) to infer "reactive" pathways of floating marine debris trajectories. The TPT analysis was applied on a pollution-aware time-homogeneous Markov chain model constructed from trajectories produced by satellite-tracked undrogued buoys from the NOAA Global Drifter Program. The latter involved coping with the openness of the system in physical space, which further required an adaptation of the standard TPT setting. Directly connecting pollution sources along coastlines with garbage patches of varied strengths, the unveiled reactive pollution routes represent alternative targets for ocean cleanup efforts. Among our specific findings we highlight: constraining a highly probable pollution source for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch; characterizing the weakness of the Indian Ocean gyre as a trap for plastic waste; and unveiling a tendency of the subtropical gyres to export garbage toward the coastlines rather than to other gyres in the event of anomalously intense winds.

Abstract:Newborn rats are more sensitive to the toxic effects of cardiac glycosides than are adult rats. This is associated with a decreased ability to remove cardiac glycosides from blood into the liver. Pregnenolone-16alpha-carbonitrile (PCN), a prototypical rodent CYP3A inducer and pregnane-X-receptor (PXR) ligand, stimulates the hepatic clearance of cardiac glycosides in newborn rats, which results in decreased toxicity of the cardiac glycosides. The mechanism responsible for this phenomenon is not clear; however, if elucidated, it would help in understanding and preventing potential drug-drug interactions. The recently cloned rat organic anion-transporting polypeptide 2 (oatp2) (Slc21a5) is a sinusoidal hepatic uptake transporter, with very high affinities for cardiac glycosides, and thus it was hypothesized that rat oatp2 increases during postnatal development and is inducible by PCN. In the present study, livers were removed from Sprague-Dawley rats from postnatal days (pnd) 0 to 45, in 5-day increments; as well as from pnd 10 to 90, in 10-day increments, after PCN (75 mg/kg i.p., for 4 days) or corn oil (vehicle for PCN) treatment. The protein and mRNA levels of rat oatp2 were determined by Western blot analysis and branched DNA signal amplification technique, respectively. Expression of rat oatp2 protein and mRNA increased gradually during postnatal development. PCN treatment increased liver to body weight ratio in both genders, and dramatically accelerated the maturation of hepatic oatp2 protein and mRNA levels. In summary, rat oatp2 undergoes age-dependent and chemical regulation during postnatal development, and is a potential target for drug-drug and age-drug interactions.

Abstract:Marine litter is a growing global problem with serious environmental, economic, social, and health threats. Understanding the socio-economic factors that influence the types and amounts of litter is of utmost importance. In this study, an integrative analysis of the socio-economic factors that characterize the beach litter distribution in continental Portugal and the Azores archipelago was conducted via a cluster analysis, implementing a novel technique to support the difficult task of marine litter characterization. The results highlighted that the most abundant beach litter material is plastic (92.9 %), followed by paper (2.2 %), wood (1.5 %), and metal (1.3 %). The majority of the items could not be attributed to a specific source (46.5 %). The remaining were attributed to public litter (34.5 % of total aggregated items), fishing (9.8 %), sewage-related debris (6.4 %) and shipping (2.2 %). The top-three beach litter categories were small plastic pieces (0–2.5 cm, 43.5 %), cigarette butts (30.1 %), and medium plastic pieces (2.5–50 cm, 26.4 %). A positive relation between both municipality environment expenditures and population density and the quantity and typology of litter was found. Beach litter quantity and categories were also associated with specific economic sectors, as well as with geographical/hydrodynamic conditions, demonstrating the utility of the technique and its applicability to other regions.

Abstract:Beach management is a key issue in combating marine litter, especially in tourist areas. It is necessary to promote government initiatives that refine local autonomy to improve the quality of beaches. Partnerships between interested institutions at the local level are stimulated to fight against environmental, economic, and social problems. Marine litter, as a more holistic problem, is growing in the international and national sphere, support programs are being developed, with possible advantages at the local level. Cassino Beach in Rio Grande, Brazil, was used as a case study to evaluate the current approaches to managing marine litter, with a focus on tourism-generated litter, analyzing the weaknesses and strengths of municipal management. The case presented as weaknesses a lack of awareness and policy, administrative deficiencies, few resources, and few spaces that promote public participation. Knowledge and information, institutional competencies, partnership, and strategies appeared as strong points. It was possible to observe that the municipality of Rio Grande is assimilating problems, planning actions and few projects are being implemented.
Marine Litter Tracking System: A Case Study with Open-Source Technology and a Citizen Science-Based Approach

Abstract:It is well established that most of the plastic pollution found in the oceans is transported via rivers. Unfortunately, the main processes contributing to plastic and debris displacement through riparian systems is still poorly understood. The Marine Litter Drifter project from the Arno River aims at using modern consumer software and hardware technologies to track the movements of real anthropogenic marine debris (AMD) from rivers. The innovative "Marine Litter Trackers" (MLT) were utilized as they are reliable, robust, self-powered and they present almost no maintenance costs. Furthermore, they can be built not only by those trained in the field but also by those with no specific expertise, including high school students, simply by following the instructions. Five dispersion experiments were successfully conducted from April 2021 to December 2021, using different types of trackers in different seasons and weather conditions. The maximum distance tracked was 2845 km for a period of 94 days. The activity at sea was integrated by use of Lagrangian numerical models that also assisted in planning the deployments and the recovery of drifters. The observed tracking data in turn were used for calibration and validation, recursively improving their quality. The dynamics of marine litter (ML) dispersion in the Tyrrhenian Sea is also discussed, along with the potential for open-source approaches including the "citizen science" perspective for both improving big data collection and educating/awareness-raising on AMD issues.

Abstract:Marine debris (MD) is a global issue that remains unresolved in Indonesia where the accumulation of this kind of pollution poses a significant threat to the marine ecosystem and health of the ocean. Understanding the sources and locations of stranded debris is crucial in identifying the required regulations and mitigation strategies. This study used the hypothetical sources to identify the stranded debris along the coastline of Selayar Island and its surrounding seas. Using a combination of simulation and in-situ sampling methods, the simulation considered 13 hypothetical sources based on external factors such as river locations and surface ocean currents. This simulation result was then validated the simulation against beach litter observations and interview results with people. The results successfully mapped the sources and stranded MD in Selayar Island, indicating that the majority of MD originates from the island itself and the surrounding areas, influenced by oceanographic factors. The most frequently encountered locations of stranded MD are in the western coastal region including tourism areas and coastal ecosystem. Due to the oceanographic conditions, the stranded debris has varied quantities over the months, and higher in December represent the northwest monsoon (NWM) season, exceeding levels observed during the southeast monsoon (SEM). The study also identified that the main sources of debris are from Selayar Island and rivers from surrounding islands. This study also confirmed that oceanographic conditions such as surface ocean currents and wind pattern influenced the spreading of MD in Selayar Island. Due to the different ocean characteristics in different regions, a more detailed understanding and stranded of marine debris source which might provide more information for the explanation of the mechanism of marine debris pathways in Archipelagic Countries.

Assessment of anthropogenic pollution in Guanabara Bay (SE Brazil) through biogeochemical data and stable isotope mixing models

Abstract:This work intends to identify pollution sources along the margins of Guanabara Bay (GB; SE Brazil) through a multiproxy approach and Bayesian stable isotopic mixture model (BSIMM). For this purpose, 33 surface sediment samples were collected and analyzed for granulometry, geochemistry (heavy metals, total organic carbon-TOC, stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen-δ13C and δ15N, Rock-Eval pyrolysis parameters-REPP), and physicochemical parameters. Metal concentrations (E) dissolved in water (EW), adsorbed by organic matter (EOM) and by Mn hydroxides (EMn), and total extracted concentrations (ET) were analyzed. Sampling was conducted in 2018 after an oil spill from Reduc Oil Refinery. Potential Ecological risk index (PERI), based on metals, classified 85% of the analyzed stations as having moderate to considerable ecological risk. The metals with the potential to cause the highest ecological risk were CdW, CdOM, PbOM, and HgOM. The combination of BSIMM and REPP data was an effective proxy for oil spill detection by indicating the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Relatively high TOC contents suggested that the analyzed stations are eutrophicated environments. BSIMM discriminated three groups of stations with different sources of organic matter (OM), endorsing the result previously shown by the cluster analysis: (A) Niterói region, Botafogo marina, Glória marina, Fiscal and Fundão islands with diffuse sources of OM, including marine phytoplankton and material of continental origin from highly polluted rivers and domestic sewage; (B) region near Fundão and Governador islands and Mangue Channel outlet with OM (≃70%) supplied by highly polluted streams and a small contribution of PAHs; (C) Duque de Caxias and Botafogo-Urca inlet with significant contributions of PAHs, materials from C-3 plants and rivers polluted by urban sewage. Results of linear regressions in conjunction with BSIMM indicate that HgMn and PbOM mainly affect Group A's stations. Although the eastern margin of GB (Niterói; Group A) showed greater oceanic interaction than the other groups, it presented substantial concentrations of metals, potentially harmful (i.e., Hg and Pb) to marine biota and human health.
Retention and dispersion of buoyant plastic debris in a well-mixed estuary from drifter observations

Abstract:Buoyant plastics enter estuaries largely from urban streams and an unknown fraction is retained before further transport to the open ocean. Plastic drifters were launched in a well-mixed estuary to simulate the movement of surface buoyant plastics. Two experiments were conducted, one during spring tides and one during neap tides, both with similar river flows and winds. Stronger tidal currents during spring tides resulted in larger dispersion and further downstream transport of the drifters. Half of the drifters were grounded within two tidal cycles. During the neap experiment, even more of the drifters (87%) were retained in the estuary. The grounding of such a high proportion of drifters suggests that much of the plastic pollution in estuaries of this type remains close to the riverine source. These findings imply that local clean-up programs removing grounded litter can reduce over half of the plastic pollution input to these estuaries.

Abstract:The East Pacific (EP) region, especially the central and southern EP, has been fairly less studied than other world's regions with respect to marine litter pollution. This comprehensive literature review (257 peer-reviewed publications) showed that both macrolitter (mostly plastics) and microplastics tend to accumulate on EP shorelines. Moreover, they were also reported in all the other compartments investigated: sea surface, water column, seafloor and 'others'. Mostly local, land-based sources (e.g., tourism, poor waste management) were identified across the region, especially at continental sites from low and mid latitudes. Some sea-based sources (e.g., fisheries, long-distance drifting) were also identified at high latitudes and on oceanic islands, likely enhanced by the oceanographic dynamics of the EP that affect transport of floating litter. Our results suggest that effective solutions to the problem require local and preventive strategies to significantly reduce the levels of litter along the EP coasts.
