Abstract:Abstract. Satellite microwave remote sensing techniques can be used to monitor vegetation optical depth (VOD), a metric which is directly linked to vegetation biomass and water content. However, these large-scale measurements are still difficult to reference against either rare or not directly comparable field observations. So far, in situ estimates of canopy biomass or water status often rely on infrequent and time-consuming destructive samples, which are not necessarily representative of the canopy scale. Here, we present a simple technique based on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) with the potential to bridge this persisting scale gap. Because GNSS microwave signals are attenuated and scattered by vegetation and liquid water, placing a GNSS sensor under a vegetated canopy and measuring changes in signal strength over time can provide continuous information about VOD and thus on vegetation biomass and water content. We test this technique at a forested site in southern California for a period of 8 months. We show that variations in GNSS signal-to-noise ratios reflect the overall distribution of biomass density in the canopy and can be monitored continuously. For the first time, we show that this technique can resolve diurnal variations in VOD and canopy water content at hourly to sub-hourly time steps. Using a model of canopy transmissivity to assess these diurnal signals, we find that temperature effects on the vegetation dielectric constant, and thus on VOD, may be non-negligible at the diurnal scale or during extreme events like heat waves. Sensitivity to rainfall and dew deposition events also suggests that canopy water interception can be monitored with this approach. The technique presented here has the potential to resolve two important knowledge gaps, namely the lack of ground truth observations for satellite-based VOD and the need for a reliable proxy to extrapolate isolated and labor-intensive in situ measurements of biomass, canopy water content, or leaf water potential. We provide recommendations for deploying such off-the-shelf and easy-to-use systems at existing ecohydrological monitoring networks such as FluxNet or SapfluxNet.

Remote Sensing of Water in Wetlands: Inundation Patterns and Extent

Abstract:Seasonally varying inundation extent and duration are key properties of wetlands, but are poorly quantified, particularly in tropical, boreal, and coastal regions. Optical sensors such as Landsat are limited by cloud cover, although sensors such as MODIS, with high repeat frequency, partly compensate for this limitation. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors are insensitive to cloud cover, and at longer wavelengths (C-band and L-band) are capable of detecting water beneath vegetation canopies. Time series of SAR data are effective for monitoring seasonal inundation dynamics, and combinations of different SAR wavelengths and polarizations can discriminate vegetation structure. Optical, SAR, and passive microwave sensors are being employed at global scale to characterize the role of wetlands in global hydrologic and biogeochemical cycles.

Abstract:The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reflectometry, i.e. GNSS-R, is a novel remote-sensing technique first published in [1] that uses GNSS signals reflected from the Earth's surface to infer its surface properties such as sea surface height (SSH), ocean winds, sea-ice coverage, vegetation, wetlands and soil moisture, to name a few. This communication discusses the scientific value of GNSS-R to (a) furthering our understanding of ocean mesoscale circulation toward scales finer than those that existing nadir altimeters can resolve, and (b) mapping vegetated wetlands, an emerging application that might open up new avenues to map and monitor the planet's wetlands for methane emission assessments. Such applications are expected to be demonstrated by the availability of data from GEROS-ISS, an ESA experiment currently in phase A [2], and CyGNSS [3], a NASA mission currently in development. In particular, the paper details the expected error characteristics and the role of filtering played in the assimilation of these data to reduce the altimetric error (when averaging many measurements).

Abstract:To limit the abstract to 250 words, please change it to "The Amazon basin, one of the world's largest and most vital ecosystems, presents a formidable challenge for accurately mapping its extensive surface water extent and dynamic seasonal and long-term variations. This challenge arises from the region's dense vegetation and persistent cloud coverage, limiting the applicability of conventional remote sensing technologies. Spaceborne global navigation satellite system reflectometry (GNSS-R) offers a promising avenue to complement existing techniques, due to its distinctive sensitivity to surface water, coupled with its vegetation and cloud penetration and high spatio-temporal resolution. A trackwise method is developed for mapping surface water using data from cyclone GNSS (CYGNSS). Over a period of more than six years, from April 2017 to May 2023, monthly 3-km binary water/land maps covering the entire basin are produced. Comparative analyses are conducted using a comprehensive set of classification metrics with datasets derived from optical, passive microwave, and radar missions. The findings revealed that these products tend to underestimate the full extent of inundation across the basin. In contrast, CYGNSS, while exhibiting a slight tendency to overestimate surface water due to its heightened sensitivity to water and wet soils, provides valuable insights into inundation dynamics even in densely vegetated areas. Furthermore, monthly inundated area estimates are compared with water levels measured by four gauging stations across the basin. The results demonstrated a strong agreement between them and a maximum correlation coefficient of 0.74. Overall, the monthly water maps produced in this study hold significant promise for a wide range of hydrological investigations and practical applications.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands, crucial for global biodiversity and climate adaptation, provide essential ecosystem services such as carbon storage and flood protection. These vital areas are increasingly threatened by both natural and human-induced changes, prompting the need for advanced monitoring techniques. This study employs unmanned aerial systems (UASs) equipped with light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and multispectral sensors to survey diverse wetland types across 8 sites in North Carolina. Utilizing high-resolution elevation data and detailed vegetation analysis, coupled with sophisticated machine learning algorithms, we achieved differentiated and highly precise classifications of wetland types. Classification accuracies varied by type, with estuarine intertidal emergent wetlands showing the highest classification accuracies due to less complex vegetation structure and clearer spectral signatures, especially when collections account for tidal influence. In contrast, palustrine forested and scrub–shrub wetlands presented lower accuracies, often due to the denser, mixed, and more complex vegetation structure and variable inundation levels, which complicate spectral differentiation and ground returns from LiDAR sensors. Overall, our integrated UAS-derived LiDAR and multispectral approach not only enhances the accuracy of wetland mapping but also offers a scalable, efficient, and cost-effective method that substantially advances conservation efforts and informs policy-making for coastal resilience. By demonstrating the usefulness of small-scale aerial data collection in ecological mapping, this study highlights the transformative potential of merging advanced technologies in environmental monitoring, underscoring their critical role in sustaining natural habitats and aiding in climate change mitigation strategies.

Abstract:Wetland managers, citizens and government leaders are observing rapid changes in coastal wetlands and associated habitats around the Great Lakes Basin due to human activity and climate variability. SAR and optical satellite sensors offer cost effective management tools that can be used to monitor wetlands over time, covering large areas like the Great Lakes and providing information to those making management and policy decisions. In this paper we describe ongoing efforts to monitor dynamic changes in wetland vegetation, surface water extent, and water level change. Included are assessments of simulated Radarsat Constellation Mission data to determine feasibility of continued monitoring into the future. Results show that integration of data from multiple sensors is most effective for monitoring coastal wetlands in the Great Lakes region. While products developed using methods described in this article provide valuable management tools, more effort is needed to reach the goal of establishing a dynamic, near-real-time, remote sensing-based monitoring program for the basin.

Abstract:Accurate and timely information describing wetland resources and their changes over time, especially in coastal urban areas, is becoming more important. In this study, we mapped and monitored land-cover change in an urban wetland using high spatial resolution IKONOS images acquired in June 2003 and January 2006. An optimal iterative unsupervised classification (OIUC) method was used to overcome the limitations of unsupervised classification. The images were categorized into six classes, and an accuracy assessment was conducted using error matrices and the Kappa coefficient. The overall accuracies were 83.2% and 86.3% for the 2003 and 2006 images, respectively. A post-classification comparison method was used to detect the wetland change by calculating a detailed land-cover type transformation matrix. The results indicated a decrease in the area of water bodies and an increase in the area of vegetation in the wetland. This paper shows that high spatial resolution remote sensing data is advanced in studying an urban wetland at a local scale. An OIUC method, combined with visual interpretation, could yield high classification accuracy. A post-classification comparison method is also efficient in wetland change detection.

Abstract:The ICESat‐2 and GEDI missions were launched in 2018, becoming the new generation of space‐borne laser altimeters. These missions provide unprecedented global geodetic elevations, opening great opportunities for water level monitoring. The potential of these altimeters has been demonstrated in open‐water environments such as lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. However, detailed evaluations in vegetated environments, such as wetlands, floodplains, and other areas not constrained by water canal networks, are essential for continued improvement and further hydrological application. We developed a systematic accuracy assessment of ICESat‐2 ATL08, and GEDI L2A products to monitor spatial‐temporal water level and depth dynamics over the South Florida Everglades wetlands. The evaluation was performed on data acquired between 2020 and 2021, using gauge‐based water level and depth estimates as references. The results showed an RMSE of 0.17 m (water level) and 0.15 m (water depth) for ICESat‐2 and 0.75 m (water level) and 0.37 m (water depth) for GEDI. The analysis suggested that nighttime acquisitions were more accurate for both missions than daytime ones. The low‐power beams achieved slightly higher accuracies than those of the high‐power beams over the evaluated wetlands. Water level retrieval was more problematic in densely vegetated areas; however, we derived a correction model based on the leaf area index that improved the accuracy by up to 75% for water depth retrievals from GEDI. Furthermore, the analysis provides new insights to understand the potential of the altimeters in monitoring the spatial‐temporal dynamics of water levels in the evaluated wetlands.

Abstract:Global Navigation Satellite System Interferometric Reflectometry (GNSS‐IR) using low‐cost antennas is a practical solution for monitoring water levels from rivers, lakes and seas that does not require submerging any instruments in water. Here we present a novel method for obtaining real‐time water levels using multiple low‐cost antennas that we validate by comparing with measurements from a co‐located pressure gauge at two sites with variable tides. Additionally, we use survey measurements to show that there is a site‐dependant mean bias in GNSS‐IR measurements up to a few centimeters, but this mean bias can be effectively removed by using a correction for the effect of tropospheric delay. We conclude that GNSS‐IR water level sensors could be a powerful tool for real‐time applications such as flood or storm surge monitoring and water resource management, as well as for improving the spatial coverage of sensors in remote regions.

Abstract:Zhalong wetland is a globally important breeding habitat for many rare migratory bird species. Prompted by the high demand for temporal and spatial information about the wetland’s hydrological regimes and landscape patterns, eight time series Radarsat-2 images were utilized to detect the flooding characteristics of the Zhalong wetland. Subsequently, a random forest model was built to discriminate wetlands from other land cover types, combining with optical, radar, and hydrological regime data derived from multitemporal synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The results showed that hydrological regimes variables, including flooding extent and flooding frequency, derived from multitemporal SAR images, improve the land cover classification accuracy in the natural wetlands distribution area. The permutation importance scores derived from the random forest classifier indicate that normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) calculated from optical imagery and the flooding frequency derived from multitemporal SAR imagery were found to be the most important variables for land cover mapping. Accuracy testing indicate that the addition of hydrological regime features effectively depressed the omission error rates (from 52.14% to 2.88%) of marsh and the commission error (from 77.34% to 51.27%) of meadow, thereby improving the overall classification accuracy (from 76.49% to 91.73%). The hydrological regimes and land cover monitoring in the typical wetlands are important for eco-hydrological modeling, biodiversity conservation, and regional ecology and water security.

Abstract:The use of GNSS signals as a source of opportunity for remote sensing applications, GNSS-R, has been a research area of interest for more than a decade. One of the possible applications of this technique is soil moisture monitoring. The retrieval of soil moisture with GNSS-R systems is based on the variability of the ground dielectric properties associated to soil moisture. Higher concentrations of water in the soil yield a higher dielectric constant and reflectivity, which incurs in signals that reflect from the Earth surface with higher peak power. Previous investigations have demonstrated the capability of GPS bistatic scatterometers to obtain high enough signal to noise ratios in order to sense small changes in surface reflectivity. Furthermore, these systems present some advantages with respect to others currently used to retrieve soil moisture. Upcoming satellite navigation systems, such as the European Galileo, will represent an excellent source of opportunity for soil moisture remote sensing for various reasons. First, the existence of pilot signals will provide the possibility to extend coherent integration times, which will contribute to the increase of received signals SNR. In addition, the availability of Galileo L1 and L5 signals will allow the multi-spectral analysis of the reflected signals and the development of inversion models which will be able to account more precisely for adverse effects, such as surface roughness and vegetation canopy. In this paper we present some of the recent theoretical work and experiments carried out at Starlab focusing on the development of dedicated Soil Moisture GNSS-R systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate how introducing a deliberate defect on the overhanging caps of strongly adhering mushroom shaped dry adhesive fibers can produce directional adhesion behavior. We find that the shape and location of this defect controls both the total adhesion force and the degree of directionality for these bio-inspired adhesives. Linear beam theory is used to demonstrate how the application of a shear load to a fiber in tension can create a small compressive load to an asymmetric crack, thereby delaying adhesion failure and producing directional adhesion, and the theory is confirmed with finite element models and empirical data. Anisotropic adhesives have been fabricated and tested and can demonstrate normal adhesion force up to ∼250 kPa with a shear displacement of 15 µm away from the defect and as small as ∼5 kPa when sheared the same amount towards the defect.

Abstract:The Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), including the US's GPS, China's BDS, the European Union's Galileo, and Russia's GLONASS, offer real-time, all-weather, any-time, anywhere and high precision observations by transmitting L band signals continuously, which have been widely used for positioning, navigation and timing. With the development of GNSS technology, it has been found that GNSS-reflected signals can be used to detect Earth's surface characteristics together with other signals of opportunity. In this paper, the current status and latest advances are presented on Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) in theory, methods, techniques and observations. New developments and progresses in GNSS-R instruments, theoretical modeling, and signal processing, ground and space-/air-borne experiments, parameters retrieval (e.g. wind speed, sea surface height, soil moisture, ice thickness), sea surface altimetry and applications in the atmosphere, oceans, land, vegetation, and cryosphere are given and reviewed in details. Meanwhile, the challenges in the GNSS-R development of each field are also given. Finally, the future applications and prospects of GNSS-R are discussed, including multi-GNSS reflectometry, new GNSS-R receivers, GNSS-R missions, and emerging applications, such as mesoscale ocean eddies, ocean phytoplankton blooms, microplastics detection, target recognition, river flow, desert studies, natural hazards and landslides monitoring.

Rapid Large-Scale Wetland Inventory Update Using Multi-Source Remote Sensing

Abstract:Rapid impacts from both natural and anthropogenic sources on wetland ecosystems underscore the need for updating wetland inventories. Extensive up-to-date field samples are required for calibrating methods (e.g., machine learning) and validating results (e.g., maps). The purpose of this study is to design a dataset generation approach that extracts training data from already existing wetland maps in an unsupervised manner. The proposed method utilizes the LandTrendr algorithm to identify areas least likely to have changed over a seven-year period from 2016 to 2022 in Minnesota, USA. Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-1 data were used through Google Earth Engine (GEE), and sub-pixel water fraction (SWF) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were considered as wetland indicators. A simple thresholding approach was applied to the magnitude of change maps to identify pixels with the most negligible change. These samples were then employed to train a random forest (RF) classifier in an object-based image analysis framework. The proposed method achieved an overall accuracy of 89% with F1 scores of 91%, 81%, 88%, and 72% for water, emergent, forested, and scrub-shrub wetland classes, respectively. The proposed method offers an accurate and cost-efficient method for updating wetland inventories as well as studying areas impacted by floods on state or even national scales. This will assist practitioners and stakeholders in maintaining an updated wetland map with fewer requirements for extensive field campaigns.

Abstract:Wetlands are amongst Earth's most dynamic and complex ecological resources, serving productive and biodiverse ecosystems. Enhancing the quality of wetland mapping through Earth observation (EO) data is essential for improving effective management and conservation practices. However, the achievement of reliable and accurate wetland mapping faces challenges due to the heterogeneous and fragmented landscape of wetlands, along with spectral similarities among different wetland classes. The present study aims to produce advanced 10 m spatial resolution wetland classification maps for four pilot sites on the Island of Newfoundland in Canada. Employing a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach, this research leverages the synergistic use of optical, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data. It focuses on ecological and hydrological interpretation using multi-source and multi-sensor EO data to evaluate their effectiveness in identifying wetland classes. The diverse data sources include Sentinel-1 and -2 satellite imagery, Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) LiDAR footprints, the Multi-Error-Removed Improved-Terrain (MERIT) Hydro dataset, and the European ReAnalysis (ERA5) dataset. Elevation data and topographical derivatives, such as slope and aspect, were also included in the analysis. The study evaluates the added value of incorporating these new data sources into wetland mapping. Using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform and the Random Forest (RF) model, two main objectives are pursued: (1) integrating the GEDI LiDAR footprint heights with multi-source datasets to generate a 10 m vegetation canopy height (VCH) map and (2) seeking to enhance wetland mapping by utilizing the VCH map as an input predictor. Results highlight the significant role of the VCH variable derived from GEDI samples in enhancing wetland classification accuracy, as it provides a vertical profile of vegetation. Accordingly, VCH reached the highest accuracy with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.69, a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 1.51 m, and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.26 m. Leveraging VCH in the classification procedure improved the accuracy, with a maximum overall accuracy of 93.45%, a kappa coefficient of 0.92, and an F1 score of 0.88. This study underscores the importance of multi-source and multi-sensor approaches incorporating diverse EO data to address various factors for effective wetland mapping. The results are expected to benefit future wetland mapping studies.

Abstract:Wetland ecosystems have complex habitat characteristics due to the wetland existing between lands and water bodies, however, satellite remote sensing images have normally mixed pixels because of their spectral characteristics of the riverine surface feature, and it is very difficult to extract the specific information of aquatic ecosystems. Hence satellite remote sensing images are hardly to match the demanding from scientists for their geoinformation researches in wetland investigation with a higher spatial accuracy. Unmanned airship low-altitude remote sensing system can resolve this technique problem. Recent advances in photo-geometry and relational technologies have facilitated the use of inexpensive digital cameras with the airborne remote sensing. And the ability of an airship would be enable it to obtain high-quality spatial images at a very high resolution by utilizing low-cost imaging instruments such as CCD cameras. Due to few landmarks existing within the wetland areas, we set artificially signs as the control points in the study area. In this study, we obtained the scanned high-resolution images (with the spatial accuracy of 0.13m in a grid) using the unmanned airship platform in the Honghe National Nature Reserve (HNNR) located in the Northeast portion of the Sanjiang Plain. Using the software -Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) CCD Image Processing System, we have mosaic automatically the aerial photographs, and we also have mosaic artificially the images used the software ENVI 4.3 based on corresponding image points between adjacent images. The study results indicated that the auto-processing method relatively was more efficient image processing however with a lower accuracy (with 4 pixels as the RMS error). It meets a demand of the large amount of data process and a relatively lower accuracy. The artificial process method relatively has a higher accuracy (less 2 pixels as the RMS error) however time-consuming, which may be applied to the image process with a high accuracy however less data. The mosaic images is available to identify wetlands vegetation at a community scale, such as Populus davidiana, Betula platyphylla and Carex pseudocuraica, Carex lasiocarpa, Calamagrostis angustifolia. With the results from this study experiment, we can conclude that the airship images can be used effectively to identify complex wetland vegetation information at a community scale, it has a great significance for applying to both scientific study and practical purpose, such as wetland plant mapping, environment planning and landscape design of wetlands, wetland restoration and ecological protection, etc.

Abstract:Wetlands are some of the most important ecosystems on Earth. They play a key role in alleviating floods and filtering polluted water and also provide habitats for many plants and animals. Wetlands also interact with climate change. Over the past 50 years, wetlands have been polluted and declined dramatically as land cover has changed in some regions. Remote sensing has been the most useful tool to acquire spatial and temporal information about wetlands. In this paper, seven types of sensors were reviewed: aerial photos coarse-resolution, medium-resolution, high-resolution, hyperspectral imagery, radar, and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. This study also discusses the advantage of each sensor for wetland research. Wetland research themes reviewed in this paper include wetland classification, habitat or biodiversity, biomass estimation, plant leaf chemistry, water quality, mangrove forest, and sea level rise. This study also gives an overview of the methods used in wetland research such as supervised and unsupervised classification and decision tree and object-based classification. Finally, this paper provides some advice on future wetland remote sensing. To our knowledge, this paper is the most comprehensive and detailed review of wetland remote sensing and it will be a good reference for wetland researchers.

Abstract:Water is an integral part of life on our planet and it plays an important role in climatic changes. Water resources research is, therefore, very important for the climate communities to not only closely monitor the regional and global water supply budget, but to also understand changes in frequency of occurrence and strength of individual weather events. This is especially true for extreme weather events, which have great societal and economic impacts. Whether we will have more or more intense tropical storms, mega-snow events, or dust-bowls in the near or far future climate. This is one of the key focus areas of climate research. The aim of my PhD work is to provide some answers to assess the impact of future climate change threats on water resources. And we are trying to find the adaptive tools needed for sustainable water resources management. In an effort to optimize water resource management, it is crucial to improve soil moisture situation awareness. With the advent of remote sensing, soil moisture is systematically monitored at the global scale but at the expense of the temporal and/or spatial resolution. Recent studies suggested to take advantage of continuously emitted waves by the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) constellations, to retrieve soil moisture. This opportunistic remote sensing technique, known as GNSS Reflectometry (GNSS-R), consists in comparing the interference of reflected waves by the ground and those which come directly from satellites. In my thesis, I focused on GNSS-R technique base on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) recorded by conventional GNSS receiver with single antenna to retrieve soil moisture variations. Previous studies show the efficiency of this methodology for clay soil and I demonstrate for the first time, it's efficiency for sandy soil using Unwrapping phase method. This method that I propose has been successfully applied to determine local soil moisture variations of : (1) 100% of sand in Volleyball playground (Toulouse, France); and (2) >85% of sand in the Sahelian critical zone of Dahra (Senegal). In addition, accurate and continuous measurement of river water levels is an important element in water resource management, to obtain an ongoing estimate of the river's flow around the world. The accuracy of GNSS-R technique for river altimetry is useful for detection of extreme hydrological events and to show the competition between continental and oceanic water near coastal area. The two methods, Least Square and "Larson" methods, has been successfully applied to determine local variations in Vietnam of: (1) the Red river (21°02'44.04"N, 105°51'48.86"E) to identify flood events and morphological changes associated to the hydrological events (tropical storm) in 2016; and (2) the Mekong river delta (9°31'38.63"N, 106°12'2.01"E) where continental water interacts with oceanic water. My work shows that GNSS-R is a powerful alternative and a significant complement to the current measurement techniques for managing water resource by establishing a link between the different temporal and spatial resolutions currently achieved by conventional tools (in-situ sensors, remote sensing radar, etc.). This technique has a great advantage based on already-developed and sustainable GNSS satellites networks and can be applied to any GNSS geodetic station. Therefore, by installing a processing chain of the SNR acquisitions, we are able to monitor various environmental parameters i.e. height river, local slope of water surface, flooded areas, soil moisture variations and even vegetation/plant height.

Abstract:In this study, a new vegetation observable derived from spaceborne Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) was developed. Firstly, a linear relationship between the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) reflectivity and soil moisture was derived based on the tau-omega (τ−w) model. The intercept and slope of this linear function were associated with the vegetation properties. Moreover, the intercept is not affected by soil moisture and depends only on vegetation properties. Secondly, to validate the new observable, the intercept demonstrated a significant correlation with vegetation water content (VWC), with the highest correlation coefficient of 0.742. Based on the intercept and slope, a linear model and an artificial neural network (ANN) model were established to retrieve VWC by combining geographical location and land cover information. The correlation coefficient and root-mean-square error (RMSE) of VWC retrieval based on the linear model were 0.795 and 2.155 kg/m2, respectively. The correlation coefficient and RMSE for the ANN model were 0.940 and 1.392 kg/m2, respectively. Compared with the linear model, the ANN model greatly improves the global VWC retrieval in accuracy, especially in areas with poor linear model retrieval results. Therefore, compared with conventional remote sensing techniques, the spaceborne GNSS-R can provide a new and effective approach to global VWC monitoring.

Abstract:Water-level monitoring is important for climate analysis, water resource planning, and monitoring of disasters, such as floods, droughts, and storm surges. The technology of global navigation satellite system-reflectometry (GNSS-R) has been demonstrated previously and can be used to retrieve data on various water levels, such as sea, lake, river, and reservoir water levels. In this paper, we focus on the branch of GNSS-R that is based on the conventional geodetic receiver. In order to improve precision and promote the actual application, we present a multi-site multi-signal GNSS-R combination method. Furthermore, to address the phenomenon of “double peaks” in spectrograms of GPS L2P/L2W signal, we present a strategy to retrieve water levels from the L2P/L2W signal captured using Z-tracking method. Data of a GNSS network, which included a base station and three monitoring sites, established in a reservoir of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project were analyzed. The multi-site, multi-signal combination method was used to form a 6-h water level retrieval series and the retrievals showed a root mean square error (RMSE) of 6.0 mm. This is the first example of GNSS-R water-level retrieval achieving a millimeter to centimeter scale precision. The ability of the GNSS technology to simultaneously monitor water level and displacement based on the same GNSS network were also discussed and demonstrated. This study showed that GNSS-R could achieve high precision, high sampling, increased service, and lower cost, thereby representing a crucial progress in the practical application of the GNSS-R technology.
