Abstract:Abstract Divergent evolution leads to variation among populations and thus promotes diversification. In plants, adaptation to different soils, pollinator guilds, and herbivores is thought to be a key ecological driver of adaptive divergence, but few studies have investigated this process experimentally. Here we use experimental evolution with fast cycling Brassica rapa plants to study the impact of soil, pollination, herbivory, and their interactions on divergent evolution in various traits during eight generations of selection. We found significant evolutionary changes in plant phenotypes caused by all three factors and their interactions. In the richer soil type, plants showed higher evolutionary rates, especially with bumblebee-pollination, which led to the evolution of increased attractiveness of plants to bumblebees. Plants that had experienced aphid-herbivory showed lower attractiveness. We found the strongest evolutionary divergence when plants evolved in different soils with bee-pollination rather than hand-pollination, irrespective of herbivory. This “soil-pollinator effect” impacted divergence in diverse suites of traits, for example leaf size, flowering time, flower petal length, some floral volatiles and leaf glucosinolates. We conclude that the interaction between soil and biotic pollination may be an important cause for divergent evolution of plants growing on different soil types, even without a shift in pollinator guilds.

Abstract:Divergent patterns of phenotypic selection on floral traits can arise in response to interactions with functionally distinct pollinators. However, there are a limited number of studies that relate patterns of phenotypic selection on floral traits to variation in local pollinator assemblages in pollination-generalized plant species. We studied phenotypic selection on floral traits of Viscaria vulgaris, a plant that interacts with a broad range of diurnal and nocturnal pollinators, and related divergence in phenotypic selection on floral traits to the expected level of divergence in local pollinator assemblages. We detected phenotypic selection on floral traits involved in the attraction of pollinators and the mechanics of pollen removal and deposition, and demonstrated that floral traits are subject to spatiotemporal variation in the strength and direction of phenotypic selection. We revealed that diurnal and nocturnal pollinators, when considered in isolation, mediated divergent patterns of phenotypic selection on floral traits. Consistent with the Grant-Stebbins model, we observed that divergence in phenotypic selection on floral traits increased with the expected level of divergence in local pollinator assemblages. Thus, generalized plant-pollinator interactions can mediate phenotypic selection on floral traits, and distinct local pollinator assemblages can generate a geographic mosaic of divergent patterns of phenotypic selection. We underscore that these outcomes are not exclusive to specialized plant-pollinator interactions and can emerge at a local geographic scale.
Evolution of floral traits and impact of reproductive mode on diversification in the phlox family (Polemoniaceae)

Abstract:Pollinator-mediated selection is a major driver of evolution in flowering plants, contributing to the vast diversity of floral features. Despite long-standing interest in floral variation and the evolution of pollination syndromes in Polemoniaceae, the evolution of floral traits and known pollinators has not been investigated in an explicit phylogenetic context. Here we explore macroevolutionary patterns of both pollinator specificity and three floral traits long considered important determinants of pollinator attraction across the most comprehensive species-level phylogenetic tree yet produced for the family. The presence of floral chlorophyll is reconstructed as the ancestral character state of the family, even though the presence of floral anthocyanins is the most prevalent floral pigment in extant taxa. Mean corolla length and width of the opening of the floral tube are correlated, and both appear to vary with pollinator type. The evolution of pollination systems appears labile, with multiple gains and losses of selfing and conflicting implications for patterns of diversification. Explicit testing of diversification models rejects the hypothesis that selfing is an evolutionary dead-end. This study begins to disentangle the individual components that comprise pollination syndromes and lays the foundation for future work on the genetic mechanisms that control each trait.

Abstract:<p>Natural selection by pollinators is an important factor in the morphological diversity and adaptive radiation of flowering plants. Selection by similar pollinators in unrelated plants leads to convergence in floral morphology, or "floral syndromes." Previous investigations into floral syndromes have mostly studied relatively small and/or simple systems; emphasizing vertebrate‐pollination. Despite the importance of multiple floral traits in plant‐pollinator interactions, these studies have examined few quantitative traits, so their co‐variation and phenotypic integration have been underexplored. To gain better insights into pollinator‐trait dynamics, we investigate the model system of the phlox family (Polemoniaceae), a clade of ∼ 400 species pollinated by a diversity of vectors. Using a comprehensive phylogeny and large dataset of traits and observations of pollinators, we reconstruct ancestral pollination system; accounting for the temporal history of pollinators. We conduct phylogenetically controlled analyses of trait co‐variation and association with pollinators, integrating many analyses over phylogenetic uncertainty. Pollinator shifts are more heterogeneous than previously hypothesized. The evolution of floral traits is partially constrained by phylogenetic history and trait co‐variation, but traits are convergent and differences are associated with different pollinators. Trait shifts are usually gradual, rather than rapid, suggesting complex genetic and ecological interactions of flowers at macroevolutionary scales.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Attracting pollinators vs escaping herbivores: eco-evolutionary dynamics of plants confronted with an ecological trade-off

Abstract:Many plant traits are subject to an ecological trade-off between attracting pollinators and escaping herbivores. The interplay of both plant-animal interaction types determines their evolution. As most studies focus on either pollination or herbivory, how they jointly affect the eco-evolutionary dynamics of plant-animal communities is often left unknown. Within a plant-pollinator-herbivore community where interaction strengths depend on trait matching, we consider the evolution of a plant trait involved in both plant-animal interactions. Using adaptive dynamics, we uncover when stabilizing, runaway (i.e. directional) or disruptive selection emerges and its consequences for multispecies coexistence. We find that strong pollination relative to herbivory favors stabilizing selection and coexistence. Strong herbivory relative to pollination fosters runaway selection and threatens coexistence. Importantly, given balanced interactions, joint effects may lead to disruptive selection, allowing the emergence of plant dimorphism. The strength of the ecological trade-off largely explains the occurrence of these contrasting eco-evolutionary dynamics. In particular, plant diversification requires strong trade-offs, with the strongest trade-offs allowing long-term polymorphism. We discuss how our results relate to various empirical cases where the interplay of pollination and herbivory maintains plant polymorphism. Beyond maintenance, our work suggests that it might also have fueled the diversification process itself.

Abstract:Most flowering plants establish mutualistic associations with insect pollinators to facilitate sexual reproduction. However, the evolutionary processes that gave rise to these associations remain poorly understood. We reconstructed the times of divergence, diversification patterns, and interaction networks of a diverse group of specialized orchids and their bee pollinators. In contrast to a scenario of coevolution by race formation, we show that fragrance-producing orchids originated at least three times independently after their fragrance-collecting bee mutualists. Whereas orchid diversification has apparently tracked the diversification of orchids' bee pollinators, bees appear to have depended on the diverse chemical environment of neotropical forests. We corroborated this apparent asymmetrical dependency by simulating co-extinction cascades in real interaction networks that lacked reciprocal specialization. These results suggest that the diversification of insect-pollinated angiosperms may have been facilitated by the exploitation of preexisting sensory biases of insect pollinators.

Abstract:Pollinivory—the consumption of pollen rather than arthropod prey—is a defining feature of bees (Anthophila; the flower lovers). In virtually all bee species, larvae consume a diet composed of pollen mixed with nectar or floral oils. Bees arose from within a group of solitary, carnivorous, apoid wasps in the Early to Mid-Cretaceous, coincident with the rapid rise of flowering plants. It is assumed that the switch from carnivory to pollen-feeding was a key innovation that led to the rapid diversification of bees, but this has never been examined empirically. Here, we explore the hypothesis that pollinivory led to the increased diversification of bees. In contrast to common perception, we find that the switch to pollen-feeding per se does not explain their extensive diversification. Rather, our results indicate that pollinivory was a necessary but not sufficient condition for diversification, and that other complementary innovations, such as a broadening of host-plant diet, allowed the diversification of the major bee lineages. Our results have broad implications for understanding tempo and mode of bee diversification dynamics in light of their floral resources.

Abstract:The evolution of floral traits in animal-pollinated plants involves the interaction between flowers as signal senders and pollinators as signal receivers. Flower colors are very diverse, effect pollinator attraction and flower foraging behavior, and are hypothesized to be shaped through pollinator-mediated selection. However, most of our current understanding of flower color evolution arises from variation between discrete color morphs and completed color shifts accompanying pollinator shifts, while evidence for pollinator-mediated selection on continuous variation in flower colors within populations is still scarce. In this review, we summarize experiments quantifying selection on continuous flower color variation in natural plant populations in the context of pollinator interactions. We found that evidence for significant pollinator-mediated selection is surprisingly limited among existing studies. We propose several possible explanations related to the complexity in the interaction between the colors of flowers and the sensory and cognitive abilities of pollinators as well as pollinator behavioral responses, on the one hand, and the distribution of variation in color phenotypes and fitness, on the other hand. We emphasize currently persisting weaknesses in experimental procedures, and provide some suggestions for how to improve methodology. In conclusion, we encourage future research to bring together plant and animal scientists to jointly forward our understanding of the mechanisms and circumstances of pollinator-mediated selection on flower color.

Abstract:Summary Shifts in pollinator occurrence and their pollen transport effectiveness drive the evolution of mating systems in flowering plants. Understanding the genomic basis of these changes is essential for predicting the persistence of a species under environmental changes. We investigated the genomic changes in Brassica rapa over nine generations of pollination by hoverflies associated with rapid morphological evolution toward the selfing syndrome. We combined a genotyping‐by‐sequencing (GBS) approach with a genome‐wide association study (GWAS) to identify candidate genes, and assessed their functional role in the observed morphological changes by studying mutations of orthologous genes in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. We found 31 candidate genes involved in a wide range of functions from DNA/RNA binding to transport. Our functional assessment of orthologous genes in A. thaliana revealed that two of the identified genes in B. rapa are involved in regulating the size of floral organs. We found a protein kinase superfamily protein involved in petal width, an important trait in plant attractiveness to pollinators. Moreover, we found a histone lysine methyltransferase (HKMT) associated with stamen length. Altogether, our study shows that hoverfly pollination leads to rapid evolution toward the selfing syndrome mediated by polygenic changes.

Abstract:Despite the paramount role of floral fragrance in pollinator attraction and reproduction in flowering plants, we know little about its evolution under natural conditions. Here we show that by reducing herbivore load with pesticide application, plants showed evolutionary changes in their floral fragrance within 4 generations when compared to plants with natural levels of herbivory. We interpret this finding in the context of relaxed physiological and ecological trade-offs with fewer herbivores, potentially facilitating selection by bees on specific aromatic volatiles. Our study confirms earlier findings of experimental evolution under highly controlled and simplified conditions in the greenhouse.

Abstract:Reproductive and floral traits are strikingly diverse in angiosperms. However, general patterns in how these traits are associated and how these associations shape species diversity are still poorly known. To date, major trait associations, or plant ecological strategies, have largely been described using vegetative traits and are underpinned by size and growth. However, these do not consider traits relating to pollination, mating and sexual systems, which are critical to species' reproductive success. Here, we characterize the strategies plants have evolved to achieve reproduction using 21 traits from an original set of 360 species sampled in 259 families across the angiosperm phylogeny. While outcrossing rates were associated with a well-known trait axis involving plant size and growth form, we revealed that pollination-related traits, including flower sex and floral reward, contribute to an equally important axis of variation. Surprisingly, this pollination axis clearly sets species with unisexual flowers apart from those with bisexual flowers, likely the result of selection for sexual specialisation at the flower and individual levels. Three angiosperm-scale reproductive strategies emerged, all containing considerable diversity that cannot be easily reduced, in contrast to strategies derived from vegetative traits. Our study demonstrates that often-overlooked, pollination-related traits represent an important dimension of plant trait variation that provides new insights into the ecology and evolution of mating and sexual systems. The reproductive strategies outlined here are the result of long-term evolutionary processes and ecological interactions between plants and pollinators, highlighting the importance of considering both fields when disentangling the origins of reproductive diversity.

Biotic interactions promote local adaptation to soil in plants

Abstract:Although different ecological factors shape adaptative evolution in natural habitats, we know little about how their interactions impact local adaptation. Here we used eight generations of experimental evolution with outcrossing plants as a model system, in eight treatment groups that varied in soil type, herbivory (with/without aphids), and pollination mode (hand- or bumblebee-pollination), to study how biotic interactions affect local adaptation to soil. First, we show that several plant traits evolved in response to biotic interactions in a soil-specific way. Second, using a reciprocal transplant experiment, we demonstrate that significant local adaptation to soil-type evolved in the “number of open flowers”, a trait used as a fitness proxy, but only in plants that evolved with herbivory and bee pollination. Whole genome re-sequencing of experimental lines revealed that biotic interactions caused a 10-fold increase in the number of SNPs across the genome with significant allele frequency change, and that alleles with opposite allele frequency change in different soil types (antagonistic pleiotropy) were most common in plants with an evolutionary history of herbivory and bee pollination. Our results demonstrate that the interaction of mutualists and antagonists can facilitate local adaptation to soil type through antagonistic pleiotropy.

Pollination-precision hypothesis: support from native honey bees and nectar bats

Abstract:The evolution of floral traits is often considered to reflect selection for increased pollination efficiency. Known as the pollination-precision hypothesis, increased pollination efficiency is achieved by enhancing pollen deposition on precise areas of the pollinator. Most research to date addressing this hypothesis has examined plant species that are a priori predicted to place pollen precisely, but we still lack comparisons with species predicted to have low pollination efficiency. We studied 39 plant species with diverse floral morphologies and measured the precision of pollen placement on two pollinator groups: honey bees (genus Apis) and nectar bats (family Pteropodidae). Pollen was collected from four locations of each pollinator's body (bees: dorsal thorax, ventral thorax, dorsal abdomen, ventral abdomen; bats: crown, face, chest, wing) to calculate pollen placement precision using Pielou's evenness index. We also quantified variation in floral design by scoring floral symmetry, corolla fusion, floral orientation and stamen number. We confirm the importance of four floral character states (bilateral symmetry, fused corollas, horizontal orientation and reduced stamen number) in promoting precise pollen placement on diverse pollinators. Our findings provide phylogenetically corrected, empirical support that the evolution of the four floral characters reflect selection for enhanced precision of pollen placed on pollinators.
Within-species floral evolution reveals convergence in adaptive walks during incipient pollinator shift

Abstract:Understanding how evolution proceeds from molecules to organisms to interactions is critical for evolutionary biology and requires integrative studies that span biological levels. By linking phenotypic changes with associated genes and fitness implications, we gain insight on the repeatability of evolution and how adaptive walks move organisms between fitness peaks, which remains poorly understood at intermediate stages, e.g. potential fitness valleys. Floral trait evolution can proceed rapidly, confer reproductive isolation, and provides numerous examples of convergent evolution associated with pollinator guilds. Within the monkeyflowers (Mimulus sect. Erythranthe), intraspecific shifts to yellow flowers within red hummingbird-pollinated species have arisen at least twice and may represent incipient shifts between optima of pollinator adaptation. Here, we compare two natural yellow-flowered forms of M. cardinalis and M. verbenaceus to their red conspecifics in floral phenotypes, biochemistry, transcriptomic and genomic variation, and interactions with pollinators. We find convergent evolution in the adaptive walks of yellow morphs in both species, with consistent changes in traits of large effect (floral pigments and associated gene expression), which result in strong preference for yellow flowers by bumblebees. Shifts in additional traits (scent emissions and floral opening size) are also consistent with bee pollination, which may represent smaller-effect steps in an ongoing walk from hummingbird to bee pollination. By examining intraspecific variation representing incipient pollinator shifts in two related species, this work elucidates how adaptive walks proceed at early stages by highlighting how convergent large effect mutations (floral color) may drive pollinator attraction, preceding smaller effect changes controlling pollinator fit and reward access. This work integrates phenotypic, biochemical, genomic, and behavioral evidence to shed light on how repeated steps in adaptive walks to new fitness optima may impact reproductive isolation and incipient speciation via convergent evolution.

Abstract:Abstract Background Pollinators impose strong selection on floral traits. Indeed, pollinator syndromes are the result of these strong selective forces, but other abiotic and biotic agents also drive the evolution of floral traits and influence plant reproduction. Global change is expected to have widespread effects on biotic and abiotic systems resulting in novel selection on floral traits under future conditions. Scope Global change has depressed pollinator abundance and altered abiotic conditions, thereby exposing flowering plant species to novel suites of selective pressures. Here we consider how biotic and abiotic factors interact to shape the expression and evolution of various floral characteristics (the targets of selection), including floral size, color, physiology, reward quantity and quality, and longevity amongst other traits. We examine cases in which selection imposed by climatic factors conflicts with pollinator-mediated selection. Additionally, we explore how floral traits respond to environmental changes through phenotypic plasticity and how that can alter plant fecundity. In this review, we evaluate how global change may shift the expression and evolution of floral phenotypes. Conclusions Floral traits evolve in response to multiple interacting agents of selection. Different agents can sometimes exert conflicting selection. For example, pollinators often prefer large flowers, but drought stress can favor the evolution of smaller flowers, and the size of floral organs can evolve as a trade-off between selection mediated by these opposing actors. Nevertheless, few studies have factorially manipulated abiotic and biotic agents of selection to disentangle their relative strengths and directions of selection. The literature has more often evaluated plastic responses of floral traits to stressors than it has considered how abiotic factors alter selection on these traits. Furthermore, global change will likely alter the selective landscape through changes in the abundance and community compositions of mutualists and antagonists and novel abiotic conditions. We encourage future work to consider a more holistic model of floral evolution, which will enable more robust predictions about floral evolution and plant reproduction as global change progresses.

Abstract:Summary Hybrid zones provide natural experimental settings to test hypotheses about species divergence. We concentrated on a hybrid swarm in which oil‐collecting bees and flower‐pecking birds act as pollinators of two Calceolaria species. We asked whether both pollinators contributed to flower divergence by differentially promoting prezygotic fitness at the phenotypic extremes that represent parentals. We studied pollinator‐mediated selection on phenotypic traits critical in plant–pollinator mechanical interaction, namely plant height, reward‐to‐stigma distance, and flower shape. We utilised the quantity and quality of pollen deposited as fitness measures and distinguished between the contribution of the two pollinator types. Results showed uni‐ and bivariate disruptive selection for most traits through pollen grains deposited by both pollinators. Bird‐mediated fitness favoured low plants with a long reward‐to‐stigma distance and a straight corolla, while bee‐mediated fitness favoured tall plants with a short reward‐to‐stigma distance and curved corolla. In addition, stabilising selection at one end of the phenotypic range showed a bird‐mediated reproductive asymmetry within the swarm. The disruptive pattern was countered, albeit weakly, by hybrids receiving higher‐quality pollen on the stigmas. Results suggest that pollinator‐mediated selection promotes divergence of integrated flower phenotypes mechanically adjusted either to bees or birds underscoring the importance of pollinator specialisation in diversification.
