Abstract:Ultrafine particles (UFP) associated with air quality and health impacts are a major concern in growing urban regions. Concentrations of UFP (particles of size between 10 and 100 nm) and accumulation mode (Nacc) (particles of size >100 and up to 1000 nm), are analyzed over a highly polluted megacity, Delhi, in conjunction with vehicular flow density, during peak (morning, and evening) and non-peak hours. UFP contributes ≥60% to total particle concentration during autumn and monsoon. UFP concentrations are about 50,000 particles per cm3 in winter which reduces to about 25,000 particles during monsoon. Nacc are about 20,000 (winter) and 10,000 (monsoon) particles per cm3. UFP concentration and Nacc during peak hours are at least twice higher than those obtained in non-peak hours, confirming the dominant influence of emissions from vehicular exhaust in the study region. Seasonal analysis of UFP size distribution reveals that direct emissions dominate the particle concentrations during winter and autumn, whereas new particle formation mechanism contributes the highest in spring and summer. Assessment of inhalable particle number concentration and particle deposition in the human respiratory tract using Multiple Path Particle Dosimetry (MPPD) model, performed for the first time, shows that the order in which these particles deposit in the human respiratory tract is alveoli > bronchiole > bronchus. The deposition ranges between 10 and 18 million nanoparticles during different hours of the day, whereas the estimated inhalable particle concentration (IPN) varies between 0.5 and 1 billion. Results on the IPN during activities classified from light (walking), medium, heavy, very heavy to severe (long-distance running) provide insights into health effects on vulnerable populations. These quantitative results obtained over a megacity on hourly and seasonal variations of nanoparticles along with IPN and deposition rates for different activities are important, and are invaluable inputs for developing mitigation policies aimed to improve air quality and public health, both of which are major concerns in South Asia.
Aerosol particles generated by diesel-powered school buses at urban schools as a source of children's exposure

Abstract:Various heath effects in children have been associated with exposure to traffic-related particulate matter (PM), including emissions from school buses. In this study, the indoor and outdoor aerosol at four urban elementary schools serviced by diesel-powered school buses was characterized with respect to the particle number concentrations and size distributions as well as the PM2.5 mass concentrations and elemental compositions. It was determined that the presence of school buses significantly affected the outdoor particle size distribution, specifically in the ultrafine fraction. The time-weighted average of the total number concentration measured outside the schools was significantly associated with the bus and the car counts. The concentration increase was consistently observed during the morning drop-off hours and in most of the days during the afternoon pick-up period (although at a lower degree). Outdoor PM2.5 mass concentrations measured at schools ranged from 3.8 to 27.6 µg m-3. The school with the highest number of operating buses exhibited the highest average PM2.5 mass concentration. The outdoor mass concentrations of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) were also highest at the school with the greatest number of buses. Most (47/55) correlations between traffic-related elements identified in the outdoor PM2.5 were significant with elements identified in the indoor PM2.5. Significant associations were observed between indoor and outdoor aerosols for EC, EC/OC, and the total particle number concentration. Day-to-day and school-to-school variations in Indoor/Outdoor (I/O) ratios were related to the observed differences in opening windows and doors, which enhanced the particle penetration, as well as indoor activities at schools. Overall, the results on I/O ratio obtained in this study reflect the sizes of particles emitted by diesel-powered school bus engines (primarily, an ultrafine fraction capable of penetrating indoors).

Abstract:1. At least two components of neuraminidase can be distinguished on the basis of thermolability and sedimentability by using the artificial fluorogenic substrate 4-methylumbelliferyl N-acetyl-alpha-D-neuraminate. 2. In crude homogenates, thermodenaturation at 25 degrees C showed a biphasic curve corresponding to component A (half-life, 21 min) and B (half-life, 85 min). The two components were partially resolved by centrifugation. A being soluble and B sedimentable. Both had similar pH-activity curves (pH optimum, 4.4), Km values (A, 0.10 mM; B, 0.06 mM) and molecular weight as determined by radiation inactivation (A, 67000; B, 63000). 3. The soluble A form was still aggregated or bound to membranous debris since almost all neuraminidase activity was eluted near or at the void volume of a Sephacryl S-300 column. 4. Both soluble and sedimentable fractions of placenta hydrolysed the GD1A ganglioside and N-acetyl-neuraminyl-D-lactose linearly for 12 h but no fetuin hydrolysis was detected. 5. The neuraminidase activity with the artificial fluorogenic substrate was inhibited by N-acetylneuraminyl-D-lactose but not by the GD1A ganglioside. These preliminary results suggest that there exist two closely related enzymes hydrolysing both the artificial substrate and N-acetylneuraminyl-D-lactose and a third one hydrolysing the GD1A ganglioside exclusively.
Associations of ultrafine and fine particles with childhood emergency room visits for respiratory diseases in a megacity

Abstract:Background Ambient fine particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 mu m (PM2.5) has been associated with deteriorated respiratory health, but evidence on particles in smaller sizes and childhood respiratory health has been limited. Methods We collected time-series data on daily respiratory emergency room visits (ERVs) among children under 14 years old in Beijing, China, during 2015-2017. Concurrently, size-fractioned number concentrations of particles in size ranges of 5-560 nm (PNC5-560) and mass concentrations of PM2.5, black carbon (BC) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were measured from a fixed-location monitoring station in the urban area of Beijing. Confounder-adjusted Poisson regression models were used to estimate excessive risks (ERs) of particle size fractions on childhood respiratory ERVs, and positive matrix factorisation models were applied to apportion the sources of PNC5-560. Results Among the 136 925 cases of all-respiratory ERVs, increased risks were associated with IQR increases in PNC25-100 (ER=5.4%, 95% CI 2.4% to 8.6%), PNC100-560 (4.9%, 95% CI 2.5% to 7.3%) and PM2.5 (1.3%, 95% CI 0.1% to 2.5%) at current and 1 prior days (lag0-1). Major sources of PNC5-560 were identified, including nucleation (36.5%), gasoline vehicle emissions (27.9%), diesel vehicle emissions (18.9%) and secondary aerosols (10.6%). Emissions from gasoline and diesel vehicles were found of significant associations with all-respiratory ERVs, with increased ERs of 6.0% (95% CI 2.5% to 9.7%) and 4.4% (95% CI 1.7% to 7.1%) at lag0-1 days, respectively. Exposures to other traffic-related pollutants (BC and NO2) were also associated with increased respiratory ERVs. Conclusion Our findings suggest that exposures to higher levels of PNC5-560 from traffic emissions could be attributed to increased childhood respiratory morbidity, which supports traffic emission control priority in urban areas.

Nevertheless, there is comparatively little epidemiological evidence from this region to quantify the effects of <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mrow><mi>PM</mi></mrow></mrow><mrow><mrow><mn>2.5</mn></mrow></mrow></msub></mrow></math> on child survival.OBJECTIVES: We estimated the association between <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mrow><mi>PM</mi></mrow></mrow><mrow><mrow><mn>2.5</mn></mrow></mrow></msub></mrow></math> exposure and child survival in India.METHODS: We constructed a large, retrospective, and nationally representative cohort of children <math><mrow><mo><</mo><mn>5</mn><mtext> years of age</mtext></mrow></math>, born between 2009-2016, from the publicly available, cross-sectional 2015-2016 Demographic Health Surveys in India. In utero and post-delivery lifetime average ambient <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mrow><mi>PM</mi></mrow></mrow><mrow><mrow><mn>2.5</mn></mrow></mrow></msub></mrow></math> exposures were estimated with data from satellite remote sensing, meteorology, and land use information (model <math><mrow><msup><mrow><mi>R</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup><mo>=</mo></mrow></math> 0.82). We used Cox proportional hazards regression to estimate the association between both average in utero and post-delivery lifetime <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mrow><mi>PM</mi></mrow></mrow><mrow><mrow><mn>2.5</mn></mrow></mrow></msub></mrow></math> and all-cause child mortality, controlling for individual- and household-level covariates, seasonality, location, and meteorology.RESULTS: Over 7,447,724 child-months of follow-up, there were 11,559 deaths at <math><mrow><mo><</mo><mn>5</mn><mtext> years of age</mtext></mrow></math> reported by the children's mothers. School bus pollution and changes in the air quality at schools: a case study.

Abstract:Millions of children attending US schools are exposed to traffic-related air pollutants, including health-relevant ultrafine aerosols generated from school buses powered with diesel fuel. This case study was established in a midwestern (USA) metropolitan area to determine the concentration and elemental composition of aerosol in the vicinity of a public school during morning hours when the bus traffic in and out of the adjacent depot was especially intense. Simultaneous measurements were performed at a control site. The ambient aerosol was first characterized in real time using a particle size selective aerosol spectrometer and then continuously monitored at each site with a real-time non-size-selective instrument that detected particles of 20 nm to > 1 mm. In addition, air samples were collected with PM2.5 Harvard Impactors and analyzed for elemental composition using the X-ray fluorescence technique (for 38 elements) and thermal-optical transmittance (for carbon). The measurements were conducted during two seasons: in March at ambient temperature around 0 degrees C and in May when it ranged mostly between 10 and 20 degrees C. The particle number concentration at the test site exhibited high temporal variability while it was time independent at the control site. Overall, the aerosol particle count at the school was 4.7 +/- 1.0 times (March) and 2.2 +/- 0.4 times (May) greater than at the control site. On some days, a 15 min-averaged particle number concentration showed significant correlation with the number of school bus arrivals and departures during these time intervals. On other days, the correlation was less than statistically significant. The 3 h time-averaged particle concentrations determined in the test site on days when the school buses operated were found to be more than two-fold greater (on average) than those measured on bus-free days at the same location, and this difference was statistically significant. Overall, the data suggest a possible association between the number of detected aerosol particles and the school bus traffic intensity. Analysis of the filter samples collected at the school site between 6: 00 and 9: 00 AM revealed higher concentrations of elemental carbon as compared to the control site (2.8 +/- 0.9 times in March and 3.1 +/- 1.1 times in May). The data collected in this case study suggest that school buses significantly contribute to exposure of children to aerosol pollutants (including diesel exhaust particles) in the school vicinity.
Maternal exposures to fine and ultrafine particles and the risk of preterm birth from a retrospective study in Beijing, China

Abstract:Maternal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been associated with increased risk of preterm birth (PTB), but evidence on particles in smaller sizes and PTB risk remains limited. In this retrospective analysis, we included birth records of 24,001 singleton live births from Haidian Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Beijing, China, 2014-2017. Concurrently, number concentrations of size-fractioned particles in size ranges of 5-560 nm (PNC5-560) and mass concentrations of PM2.5, black carbon (BC) and gaseous pollutants were measured from a fixed-location monitoring station in central Haidian District. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) of air pollutants on PTB risk after controlling for temperature, relative humidity, and individual covariates (e.g., maternal age, ethnicity, gravidity, parity, gestational weight gain, fetal gender, the year and season of conception). Positive matrix factorization models were then used to apportion the sources of PNC5-560. Among the 1062 (4.4%) PTBs, increased PTB risk was observed during the third trimester of pregnancy per 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 [OR = 1.92; 95% Confidence Interval (95% CI): 1.76, 2.09], per 1000 particles/cm3 increase in PNC25-100 (OR = 1.09; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.15) and PNC100-560 (OR = 1.22; 95% CI: 1.05, 1.42). Among the identified sources of PNC5-560, emissions from gasoline and diesel vehicles were significantly associated with increased PTB risk, with ORs of 1.14 (95% CI: 1.01, 1.29) and 1.11 (95% CI: 1.04, 1.18), respectively. Exposures to other traffic-related air pollutants, such as BC and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were also significantly associated with increased PTB risk. Our findings highlight the importance of traffic emission reduction in urban areas.

Abstract:Preschool children aged 3–6 years are vulnerable to exposed to particulate matter ("PM10" and "PM2.5"). It is required in evaluating the risk based on dose of preschool children. Microenvironments which preschool children mainly visited were classified. Inhalation type was adapted in each microenvironment in consideration of intensity of activity. The exposure scenario was described as preschool children had been living in Seoul, South Korea, and dose was calculated by considering time-activity-pattern with major microenvironments and inhalation type of preschool children for 24 h. Monte-Carlo simulation technique is used to estimate dose of particulate matter in probabilistic distribution by age and sex. The contribution of exposure by microenvironments and inhalation type was calculated. Risk assessment was performed based on WHO interim target-3 24-h concentration in order to estimate. Sensitivity analysis was performed to determine the effective variable of dose. As a result of the study, the dose of PM was higher for boys than girls and tended to decrease with age. The overall contributions of PM doses by microenvironments were daycare center, home, other facilities, transit, and outdoors, respectively, although differed between daycare center and home priority by age and sex. Especially, the contribution of daycare center and home was very high, accounting over 85% of the total. The overall contributions of PM doses by inhalation type were "run," "stable," "sleep," and "walk inhalation," respectively. The results of hazard quotient showed that "PM10" exceeded the WHO interim target-3 24-h concentration standard by about 10% and "PM2.5" exceeded about half. Through sensitivity analysis, PM concentration was confirmed as a major influence variable for doses. This study was able to affirm the overall exposure status of "PM10" and "PM2.5" for preschool children, and this is expected to be used in regulation and public health.

Abstract:Abstract Background Particulate matter (PM), a major component of ambient air pollution, accounts for a substantial burden of diseases and fatality worldwide. Maternal exposure to PM during pregnancy is particularly harmful to children’s health since this is a phase of rapid human growth and development. Method In this review, we synthesize the scientific evidence on adverse health outcomes in children following prenatal exposure to the smallest toxic components, fine (PM 2.5 ) and ultrafine (PM 0.1 ) PM. We highlight the established and emerging findings from epidemiologic studies and experimental models. Results Maternal exposure to fine and ultrafine PM directly and indirectly yields numerous adverse birth outcomes and impacts on children’s respiratory systems, immune status, brain development, and cardiometabolic health. The biological mechanisms underlying adverse effects include direct placental translocation of ultrafine particles, placental and systemic maternal oxidative stress and inflammation elicited by both fine and ultrafine PM, epigenetic changes, and potential endocrine effects that influence long-term health. Conclusion Policies to reduce maternal exposure and health consequences in children should be a high priority. PM 2.5 levels are regulated, yet it is recognized that minority and low socioeconomic status groups experience disproportionate exposures. Moreover, PM 0.1 levels are not routinely measured or currently regulated. Consequently, preventive strategies that inform neighborhood/regional planning and clinical/nutritional recommendations are needed to mitigate maternal exposure and ultimately protect children’s health.

Investigating the temporal dynamics of sub-micron particles and particle-bound transition metals in indoor air of a metropolitan city

Abstract:The present study portrays an association between particle-bound transition metals and children's health. The indoor air quality of the urban metropolitan city households was monitored for four PM sizes, namely PM 1.0–2.5 , PM 0.50–1.0 , PM 0.25–0.50 and PM <0.25 , in major seasons observed in the city; summer and winter. Further transition/heavy metals, viz. Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn, were analysed in PM 1-2.5 samples. In order to evaluate the effect, health risk assessment was performed using mathematical and computational model for assessing dermal exposure and dose estimation (multiple path particle dosimetry model version3.0). The study principally targeted the children aged 2–15 years for the health risk assessment. According to the results, for the largest particle size i.e. PM 1.0–2.5 the highest deposition was in the head region (49.1%) followed by pulmonary (43.6%) and tracheobronchial region (7.2%), whereas, for the smallest particle size i.e. PM <0.25 the highest deposition was obtained in the pulmonary region (73.0%) followed by the head (13.6%) and TB region (13.2%). Also, the most imperilled group of children with highest dose accumulation was found to be children aged 8–9 years for all particle sizes. Moreover, the dermal exposure dose as evaluated was found to be preeminent for Ni, Zn and Pb. Besides, seasonal variation gesticulated towards elevated concentrations in winter relative to the summer season. Altogether, the study will provide a conception to the researchers in the fields mounting season-specific guidelines and mitigation approaches. Conclusively, the study commends future work focussing on defining the effects of other chemical components on particles and associated transition metal composition along with proper extenuation of the same.

Abstract:Background: A significant number of children attend Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC). ECEC is an important environment and behaviour setting for young children. Time spent outdoors is positively associated with children's physical activity levels, yet increased time spent physically active outdoors may expose young children to traffic-related air pollution, particularly in ECEC centres located in high traffic areas. Methods: This study was part of the Play Spaces and Environments for Children's Physical Activity (PLAYCE) study, Perth, Western Australia. Data from 22 ECEC centres and 478 children were collected. Continuous measures of indoor and outdoor fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were conducted for 48-72 h in each ECEC. Children wore ActiGraph GT3X + accelerometers to measure their physical activity at ECEC. The total length of high traffic roads within a 300m road network service area buffer around each ECEC was used to identify high and low traffic centres. Results: Outdoor PM2.5 concentrations peaked in the afternoon (1pm, 2pm and 6pm) at ECEC centres. Outdoor and indoor PM2.5 concentrations were significantly higher for centres located in high compared with low traffic areas (both p < 0.05). There was no significant association between a centre being located in a high or low traffic area and the time preschoolers spent outdoors or their physical activity levels. Discussion: Time periods when air pollution concentrations in ECECs are highest correspond with times when preschoolers are likely to be physically active outdoors. Children's potential exposure to traffic-related air pollutants is occurring during a period of rapid lung development. Given there is no evidence of a safe level of exposure to PM2.5 or a threshold below which no adverse health effects occur, careful planning should be a consideration to avoid locating ECEC centres in high traffic areas.

Abstract:Rapid urbanization in India is contributing to heightened poor air quality. Yet research on the impact of poor air on adverse birth outcomes (ABOs) especially in the public health aspect is less in India. This study investigates the influence of air quality on birth weight (LBW) and preterm birth (PTB). Utilizing data from the National Family Health Survey and satellite images, the study employs various statistical analyses and spatial models to elucidate the connection between in-utero exposure to air pollution and birth outcomes, both at the individual and district levels. It was observed that approximately 13% of children were born prematurely, and 17% were born with low birth weight. Increased ambient PM2.5 concentrations during pregnancy were associated with higher odds of LBW (AOR: 1.4; 95% CI: 1.29–1.45). Mothers exposed to PM2.5 during pregnancy had a heightened likelihood of delivering prematurely (AOR: 1.7; 95% CI: 1.57–1.77) in comparison to unexposed mothers. Climatic factors such as rainfall and temperature had a greater association with ABOs. Children residing in the Northern districts of India appeared to be more susceptible to the adverse effects of ambient air pollution. Furthermore, indoor air pollution was found to be associated with LBW. Employing a distributed spline approach, the study identified a discernible upward trend in the risk of adverse birth outcomes as the level of exposure increased, particularly following an exposure level of 40 PM2.5 ug/m3. Among the spatial models employed, the MGWR spatial model exhibited the highest level of goodness of fit. In addition to addressing immediate determinants such as nutrition and maternal healthcare, it is imperative to collaboratively address distal factors encompassing both indoor and outdoor pollution to attain lasting enhancements in child health.

Abstract:We established air pollution modelling to study particle (PM10) exposures during pregnancy and infancy (1990-1993) through childhood and adolescence up to age ~15 years (1991-2008) for the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents And Children (ALSPAC) birth cohort. For pregnancy trimesters and infancy (birth to 6 months; 7 to 12 months) we used local (ADMS-Urban) and regional/long-range (NAME-III) air pollution models, with a model constant for local, non-anthropogenic sources. For longer exposure periods (annually and the average of birth to age ~8 and to age ~15 years to coincide with relevant follow-up clinics) we assessed spatial contrasts in local sources of PM10 with a yearly-varying concentration for all background sources. We modelled PM10 (μg/m3) for 36,986 address locations over 19 years and then accounted for changes in address in calculating exposures for different periods: trimesters/infancy (n = 11,929); each year of life to age ~15 (n = 10,383). Intra-subject exposure contrasts were largest between pregnancy trimesters (5th to 95th centile: 24.4-37.3 μg/m3) and mostly related to temporal variability in regional/long-range PM10. PM10 exposures fell on average by 11.6 μg/m3 from first year of life (mean concentration = 31.2 μg/m3) to age ~15 (mean = 19.6 μg/m3), and 5.4 μg/m3 between follow-up clinics (age ~8 to age ~15). Spatial contrasts in 8-year average PM10 exposures (5th to 95th centile) were relatively low: 25.4-30.0 μg/m3 to age ~8 years and 20.7-23.9 μg/m3 from age ~8 to age ~15 years. The contribution of local sources to total PM10 was 18.5%-19.5% during pregnancy and infancy, and 14.4%-17.0% for periods leading up to follow-up clinics. Main roads within the study area contributed on average ~3.0% to total PM10 exposures in all periods; 9.5% of address locations were within 50 m of a main road. Exposure estimates will be used in a number of planned epidemiological studies.
Commuter Exposure to Particulate Matters in Four Common Transportation Modes in Nanjing

Abstract:Particulate matter (PM) is one of the major air pollutants in China. Traffic-related microenvironments are the typical scenarios exposed to high PM concentrations. This paper investigates the personal exposure to PM during commuting in Nanjing in four transportation modes, i.e. subway, bicycle, bus and walking. The measurements were conducted in a heavy-traffic street during rush hours in summer and winter. The result reveals significant PM concentration differences between various commuting modes. Passengers in subway cabin are exposed to lowest PM1 (38.3 mu g/m(3)) and PM2.5 (54.4 mu g/m(3)) concentrations, while passengers in subway station are exposed to highest PM2.5 (90.5 mu g/m(3)). Pedestrians are exposed to highest PM1 (59.5 mu g/m(3)). Both outdoor and indoor-generated particles contribute a lot to the particles in subway station and 63.4% of the PM2.5 generated in subway station are between 1 mu m and 2.5 mu m in size. Most particles in subway cabin are from subway station and most particles in bus cabin come from the outdoor air, while indoor sources contribute little. Spatial particle concentration variations were observed in subway station. The particle concentration at a deeper level is usually higher than the concentration at a shallower level. Substantial particles within 1-2.5 mu m in size were observed at the platform and the portion within 1-2.5 mu m decreased at shallower levels. The PM inhalation during subway trip is lowest while the inhalations during walking and cycling are more than 5 times higher. During a short distance subway trip, the exposure in subway station contributes most of the total particle inhalation during the entire subway trip.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the association between size-fractionated particle number concentrations (PNC) and respiratory health in children. Methods: From November 2018 to June 2019, there were 65 children aged 6-9 years from an elementary school in shanghai recruited in this panel study with three rounds of follow-up. The forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), and exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) levels were measured and buccal mucosa samples of children were collected at each follow-up visit. The level of PNC, temperature and humidity of the elementary school was monitored from 3 days before each physical examination to the end of the physical examination. The linear mixed effects model was used to analyze the association between PNC and indicators of respiratory health in children. Results: Linear mixed effects model analysis revealed that, at lag 2 day, an interquartile range increase in PNC for particles measuring 0.25-0.40 μm was associated with the absolute changes in FVC, FEV1 and abundance-based coverage estimator (ACE) about -60.15 ml (95%CI:-88.97 ml, -31.32 ml), -34.26 ml (95%CI:-63.22 ml, -5.31 ml), -6.00 (95%CI:-9.15, -2.84) and percentage change in FeNO about 12.10% (95%CI: 3.05%, 21.95%), respectively. These adverse health effects increased with the decrease of particle size. Conclusion: The short-term exposure to particulate matter is associated with reduced lung function, buccal microbe diversity and higher airway inflammation level among children. These adverse health effects may increase with the decrease of particle size.

Abstract:Travelers are exposed to higher levels of Particulate Matter (PM). The present study investigates variability in exposure to PM 2.5 for eight transport microenvironments. Data was collected during three time periods for seven days in Delhi, India. The mean PM 2.5 concentrations are the highest for bicycle (59.80 μ g/m 3 ), metro (55.75 μ g/m 3 ), and lowest for AC-bus (40.82 μ g/m 3 ) and AC-car (40.17 μ g/m 3 ). Concentrations for all modes gradually increase from Thursday to Saturday. Most of the modes attain the highest values on a weekend day and the lowest value on Sunday due to higher wind speeds. Interestingly, the morning peak has the highest exposure and inhalation dose intake. The inhaled dose is highest for bicycle mode and lowest for AC-bus and AC-car. Higher inhalation doses may pose serious health issues to active-mode travelers. These findings can serve as practical guidelines for travelers and policymakers seeking to decrease exposure and reduce health burdens.

Abstract:Production of extracellular alpha-glucosidase was studied with strain KP 1006 of a new species of thermophilic Bacillus, which was isolated from soil samples by enrichment at 65 C. alpha-Glucosidase production was maximum at 60 C and at an initial pH of 6.5. The final enzyme yield was increased by starch, maltose, glycerol, peptone, and yeast extract but reduced by acetate and gluconate, alpha-Glucosidase was formed in the cytoplasm and accumulated as a large pool during the logarithmic growth phase. At a midpoint of this period, the enzyme appeared in the culture broth, and its level increased until the end of the stationary phase.
The Association Between High Ambient Air Pollution Exposure and Respiratory Health of Young Children: A Cross Sectional Study in Jinan, China

Abstract:There is growing concern about health effects of high air pollution in less-developed countries. Children represent a population at increased risk for air pollution-related respiratory conditions. This study investigated the relationship between high ambient air pollution exposure and respiratory health of young schoolchildren. From 2014 to 2016 in Jinan, China, 2532 primary school children in grades three to five from two different schools with different levels of air pollution were included in the study. Levels of ambient air pollution exposure including PM10, PM2.5, NO2, SO2, CO and O-3 were measured continuously at the two schools. A questionnaire about children's respiratory health was conducted every year. Among them, about 150 randomly selected children also performed lung function tests two times a year at the beginning of November and middle of December. Annual average exposure levels of PM2.5 (66.8-79.1 vs 90.0-107.7 mu g/m(3)), PM10 (129.5-177.3 vs 198.1-218.6 mu g/ m(3)), NO2 (45.3-53.2 vs 45.0-56.2 mu g/m(3)), SO2 (29.8-56.5 vs 40.5-80.3 mu g/m(3)), CO (1.3-1.5 vs 1.4-1.7 mg/m(3)) and O-3 (84.8-120.2 vs 61.1-128.1 mu g/m(3)) in the heavy pollution primary school were significantly higher than the light one. The higher air pollution exposure was related to increased prevalence of respiratory diseases of young children in the last year, especially allergic rhinitis. The increased odds of lung function impairment associated with exposure to higher air pollution, could be up to 171.5% (aOR = 2.715; 95% CI = 1.915-3.849) for PEF < 75% predicted in 2014. However, after short-termexposure for 1.5 month or a week, paired comparison for parameters of the same child showed different results. The association between high ambient air pollution exposure and respiratory health of young children is closely related to exposure time and dose and may be fluctuate and complex. Abstract:Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is believed to be one of the most hazardous air pollution with a ubiquitous presence. Animal studies have reported the association between prenatal exposure to traffic pollutant (not exclusively including PM2.5) and reproductive development in male offspring. However, the effects of prenatal exposure to PM2.5 on reproductive health in children are still unknown. The present study was based on the Shanghai-Minhang Birth Cohort Study (S-MBCS). A total of 876 pregnant women and their infants were included. Infants' anogenital distance (AGD, the distance from the anus to the genitals; AGDap [anus-penis] and AGDas [anus-scrotum] for boys, and AGDac [anus-clitoris] and AGDaf [anus-fourchette] for girls) were measured at birth. PM(2.5 )concentrations during pregnancy were estimated using satellite based modeling approach. Multiple linear regression analysis and multiple informant model were conducted to examine the associations between prenatal exposure to PM2.5 (pre mu g/m(3)) and offspring's AGDs (mm). In order to minimize the misclassification of exposure, a sensitivity analysis restricted to mothers being off work during pregnancy was performed. In multiple linear regression models, we found that prenatal exposure to PM2.5 during the 1st and 3rd trimesters was associated with shorter AGDs. In multiple informant model, similar patterns were found, and statistically significant reductions were observed in AGDap (beta=-0.278, 95%CI: -0.343 similar to-0.212), AGDac (beta=-0.188, 95%CI: -0.247 similar to-0.130) and AGDaf (beta= -0.163, 95%CI: -0.238 similar to-0.088) with PM2.5 exposure during the 1 st trimester, and AGDap (beta=-0.201, 95%CI: -0.247 similar to-0.155), AGDas (beta=-0.158, 95%CI: -0.198 similar to-0.117), AGDac (beta=-0.128, 95%CI: -0.167 similar to-0.089) and AGDaf (beta = -0.144, 95%CI: -0.194 similar to-0.094) with PM2.5 exposure during the 3rd trimester. The sensitivity analysis restricted to women being off work during pregnancy showed similar results. PM2.5 exposure during the 1st and 3rd trimesters was associated with shortened AGDs in offspring at birth. Our findings provide preliminary evidence that prenatal exposure to PM2.5 might be associated with the reproductive development of offspring. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Prenatal and postnatal early life exposure to greenness and particulate matter of different size fractions in relation to childhood rhinitis - A multi-center study in China

Abstract:The impact of early life exposure to residential greenness on childhood rhinitis and its interaction with particulate matter (PM) of different size fractions remain inconsistent. Herein, we recruited 40,486 preschool children from randomly selected daycare centers in 7 cities in China from 2019 to 2020, and estimated exposure to residential greenness by the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) with a 500 m buffer. Exposure to ambient PM (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10) was evaluated using a satellite-based prediction model (daily, at a resolution of 1 km × 1 km). By mixed-effect logistic regression, NDVI values during pregnancy, in the first (0-1 year old) and the second (1-2 years old) year of life were negatively associated with lifetime rhinitis (LR) and current rhinitis (CR) (P < 0.001). PM in the same time windows was associated with increased risks of LR and CR in children, with smaller size fraction of PM showing greater associations. The negative associations between prenatal and postnatal NDVI and LR and CR in preschool children remained robust after adjusting for concomitant exposure to PM, whereas the associations of postnatal NDVI and rhinitis showed significant interactions with PM. At lower levels of PM, postnatal NDVI remained negatively associated with rhinitis and was partly mediated by PM (10.0-40.9 %), while at higher levels of PM, the negative associations disappeared or even turned positive. The cut-off levels of PM were identified for each size fraction of PM. In conclusion, prenatal exposure to greenness had robust impacts in lowering the risk of childhood rhinitis, while postnatal exposure to greenness depended on the co-exposure levels to PM. This study revealed the complex interplay of greenness and PM on rhinitis in children. The exposure time window in prenatal or postnatal period and postnatal concomitant PM levels played important roles in influencing the associations between greenness, PM and rhinitis.
