Abstract:Abstract New experimental vapor pressures in the range 407 K to 460 K and vaporization enthalpy of the ionic liquids (IL) N -alkyl- N -methyl-pyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide ionic liquids have been measured using quartz crystal microbalance. The absolute vapor pressures and vaporization enthalpies were compared with analogous pyrrolidinium-based ILs with the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion. The evaluated difference in vaporization enthalpy of ILs with bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anions allowed for estimation of corresponding property for a wide set of ILs with bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide anion. The results are relevant to chemical engineering calculations of processes involving ILs as reaction and separation media.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are a novel group of green solvents with great promise for various industrial applications, including carbon capture and lignocellulosic biomass deconstruction. However, the use of ILs at the industrial scale remains challenging due to their high viscosities at ambient temperatures. To develop ILs with lower viscosities, a systematic study of their quantitative structure–property relationship (QSPR) is desirable. Here, we developed four machine learning (ML) models to predict viscosity at various temperature and pressure ranges, trained over a wide range of ILs consisting of various cationic and anionic families. ML methods including two-factor polynomial regression (two-factor PR), support vector regression (SVR), feed-forward neural networks (FFNN), and categorical boosting (CATBoost) were developed based on features that have proven useful in previous ML studies: COSMO-RS (conductor-like screening model for real solvents)-derived surface screening charge densities (sigma profiles). FFNN and CATBoost were the most accurate in predicting IL viscosities with lower average absolute relative deviation and higher R 2 values on the test set. Tanimoto similarity scores were calculated to characterize the chemical space and structural similarity of the investigated ions. Furthermore, SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) analysis was employed to interpret the ML results. Temperature, the polar area of ILs, and the nonpolar regions of ions are key features that influence the viscosity predictions. The IL viscosity prediction here is the most accurate reported to date.

Abstract:The chemokine CXCL12 and its G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) CXCR4 are high-priority clinical targets because of their involvement in metastatic cancers (also implicated in autoimmune disease and cardiovascular disease). Because chemokines interact with two distinct sites to bind and activate their receptors, both the GPCRs and chemokines are potential targets for small molecule inhibition. A number of chemokines have been validated as targets for drug development, but virtually all drug discovery efforts focus on the GPCRs. However, all CXCR4 receptor antagonists with the exception of MSX-122 have failed in clinical trials due to unmanageable toxicities, emphasizing the need for alternative strategies to interfere with CXCL12/CXCR4-guided metastatic homing. Although targeting the relatively featureless surface of CXCL12 was presumed to be challenging, focusing efforts at the sulfotyrosine (sY) binding pockets proved successful for procuring initial hits. Using a hybrid structure-based in silico/NMR screening strategy, we recently identified a ligand that occludes the receptor recognition site. From this initial hit, we designed a small fragment library containing only nine tetrazole derivatives using a fragment-based and bioisostere approach to target the sY binding sites of CXCL12. Compound binding modes and affinities were studied by 2D NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, molecular docking and cell-based functional assays. Our results demonstrate that the sY binding sites are conducive to the development of high affinity inhibitors with better ligand efficiency (LE) than typical protein-protein interaction inhibitors (LE ≤ 0.24). Our novel tetrazole-based fragment 18 was identified to bind the sY21 site with a K(d) of 24 μM (LE = 0.30). Optimization of 18 yielded compound 25 which specifically inhibits CXCL12-induced migration with an improvement in potency over the initial hit 9. The fragment from this library that exhibited the highest affinity and ligand efficiency (11: K(d) = 13 μM, LE = 0.33) may serve as a starting point for development of inhibitors targeting the sY12 site.

Abstract:In this study, we determined the enthalpies of vaporisation for a suitable set of molecular and ionic liquids using modern techniques for vapour pressure measurements, such as the quartz crystal microbalance, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and gas chromatographic methods. This enabled us to measure reasonable vapour pressures, avoiding the problem of the decomposition of the ionic liquids at high temperatures. The enthalpies of vaporisation could be further analysed by applying the well-known "group contribution" methods for molecular liquids and the "centerpiece" method for ionic liquids. This combined approach allowed for the dissection of the enthalpies of vaporisation into different types of molecular interaction, including hydrogen bonding and the dispersion interaction in the liquid phase, without knowing the existing species in both the liquid and gas phases.

Abstract:Physicochemical properties of ionic liquids (ILs) are essential in solvent screening and process design. However, due to their vast diversity, acquiring IL properties through experimentation alone is both time-consuming and costly. For this reason, the creation of prediction models that can accurately forecast the characteristics of IL and its mixtures is crucial to their application. This study proposes a model for predicting the three important parameters of the IL-organic solvent–organic solvent ternary system: density, viscosity, and heat capacity. The model incorporates group contribution (GC) and machine learning (ML) methods. A link between variables such as temperature, pressure, and molecular structure is established by the model. We gathered 2775 viscosity, 6515 density, and 1057 heat capacity data points to compare the prediction accuracy of three machine learning methods, namely, artificial neural networks (ANNs), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM). As can be observed from the findings, the ANN model produced the best results out of the three GC-based ML methods, even though all three produced dependable predictions. For heat capacity, the mean absolute error (MAE) of the ANN model is 1.7320 and the squared correlation coefficient (R2) is 0.9929. Regarding viscosity, the MAE of the ANN model is 0.0225 and the R2 is 0.9973. For density, the MAE of the ANN model is 7.3760 and the R2 is 0.9943. The Shapley additive explanatory (SHAP) approach was applied to the study to comprehend the significance of each feature in the prediction findings. The analysis results indicated that the R-CH3 group of the ILs, followed by the imidazolium (Im) group, had the highest impact on the heat capacity property of the ternary system. On the other hand, the Im group and the R-H group of ILs had the most effects on viscosity. In terms of density, the Im group of the ILs had the greatest effect on the ternary system, followed by the molar fraction of the organic solvent.

Predicting Melting point and Viscosity of Ionic Liquids Using New Quantum Chemistry Descriptors

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are an emerging group of chemical compounds which possess promising properties such as having negligible vapor pressure. These so called designer solvents have the potential to replace volatile organic compounds in industrial applications. A large number of ILs, through the combination of different cations and anions, can potentially be synthesized. In this context, it will be useful to intelligently design customized ILs through computer-aided methods. Practical limitations dictate that any successful attempt to design new ILs for industrial applications requires the ability to accurately predict their melting point and viscosity as experimental data will not be available for designed structures. In this paper, we present two new correlation equations towards the more precise prediction of melting point and viscosity of ILs solely based on the inputs from quantum chemistry calculations (no experimental data or simulation results are needed). To develop these correlations we utilized data related to size, shape, and electrostatic properties of cations and anions that constitutes ILs. In this work, new descriptors such as dielectric energy of cations and anions as well as the values predicted by an ad-hoc model for the radii of cations and anions (instead of their van der waals radii) were used. An enormous form of correlation equations constituent of all different combinations of descriptors (as the inputs to the model) were tested. The average relative errors were measured to be 3.16% and 6.45% for the melting point, Tm, and ln(vis), respectively.

Abstract:Electrostatics polarization effects are crucial in predicting various physical properties of pure or aqueous ionic liquids, which have potential applications as green solvents in many fields, such as chemical synthesis and gas separations. Here, we proposed an electrostatic-variable coarse-grained (VaCG) model to predict physical properties of water/[BMIM](+)[BF4](-) binary mixtures and pure [BMIM](+)[SCN](-) by introducing a concentration or environment-dependent dielectric constant of ionic liquid, epsilon(IL)(x), and water, epsilon(w)(x), in the non-bonded electrostatic interaction term, respectively. The electrostatic polarization induced charge transfer between cation and anion pair of ionic liquid was treated by setting the fragment charges of the three coarse-grained beads, i.e., butyl and methylimidazolium units of [BMIM](+) and anions ([BF4](-) or [SCN](-)), from the linear scaling generalized energy-based fragmentation electronic structure calculations of clusters with up to 30 cation-anion pairs. This model handles the polarization effect over the range of water mole fraction x = 0 similar to 100 mol% with the explicit partial charges and implicit treatment of the long-ranged continuum medium without increasing the computational cost. The VaCG model has good performance in predicting thermodynamics (density, enthalpy of vaporization, surface tension), dynamic properties (diffusivity, ionic conductivity), and dielectric properties of aqueous solutions. Room temperature ionic liquids viscosity prediction from deep-learning models

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are a new group of novel solvents with great potential in design-synthesis. They are promising electrolyte candidates in energy storage applications, especially in rechargeable batteries. However, in practice, their usage remains limited due to the unfavorable high-viscosity (η) property at ambient conditions. To optimize the design synthesis of ILs, a systematic fundamental study of their structure-property relationship is deemed necessary. In this study, we employed a deep-learning (DL) model to predict the room-temperature viscosity of a wide range of ILs that consist of various cationic and anionic families. Based on this DL model, accurate prediction of IL viscosity can be realized, reaching an R2 score of 0.99 with a root mean square error of ~45 mPa·s. To further help identify low- and high-η ILs, a low/high-η binary classification model with an overall accuracy of 93% for test prediction is obtained based on the DL model. From the important structure-property relationship analysis governed by the top-rank molecular descriptors of this model, a list of very low-η ILs (i.e., η < 30 mPa·s) that could be potentially useful in battery electrolytes is identified. Based on the finding of the DL model, it suggests that in order to achieve low-η, grafting IL cations into smaller sizes (e.g., smaller head rings) and short alkyl chains and reducing ionization potentials/energies will help. Meanwhile, for the same cations, further reducing anions in sizes, chain lengths, and hydrogen bonds might be useful to further reduce the viscosity. Thus, with a fine selection and molecular grafting of anionic and cationic species in ILs, we believe fine-tuning IL viscosities can be achieved through the proper design synthesis of functional groups in ILs.
Viscosity of Ionic Liquids: Application of the Eyring’s Theory and a Committee Machine Intelligent System

Abstract:Accurate determination of the physicochemical characteristics of ionic liquids (ILs), especially viscosity, at widespread operating conditions is of a vital role for various fields. In this study, the viscosity of pure ILs is modeled using three approaches: (I) a simple group contribution method based on temperature, pressure, boiling temperature, acentric factor, molecular weight, critical temperature, critical pressure, and critical volume; (II) a model based on thermodynamic properties, pressure, and temperature; and (III) a model based on chemical structure, pressure, and temperature. Furthermore, Eyring’s absolute rate theory is used to predict viscosity based on boiling temperature and temperature. To develop Model (I), a simple correlation was applied, while for Models (II) and (III), smart approaches such as multilayer perceptron networks optimized by a Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm (MLP-LMA) and Bayesian Regularization (MLP-BR), decision tree (DT), and least square support vector machine optimized by bat algorithm (BAT-LSSVM) were utilized to establish robust and accurate predictive paradigms. These approaches were implemented using a large database consisting of 2813 experimental viscosity points from 45 different ILs under an extensive range of pressure and temperature. Afterward, the four most accurate models were selected to construct a committee machine intelligent system (CMIS). Eyring’s theory’s results to predict the viscosity demonstrated that although the theory is not precise, its simplicity is still beneficial. The proposed CMIS model provides the most precise responses with an absolute average relative deviation (AARD) of less than 4% for predicting the viscosity of ILs based on Model (II) and (III). Lastly, the applicability domain of the CMIS model and the quality of experimental data were assessed through the Leverage statistical method. It is concluded that intelligent-based predictive models are powerful alternatives for time-consuming and expensive experimental processes of the ILs viscosity measurement.

Direct UV-spectroscopic Measurement of Selected Ionic-Liquid Vapors

Abstract:The hallmark of ionic liquids lies in their negligible vapor pressure. This ultralow vapor pressure makes it difficult to conduct the direct spectroscopic measurement of ionic-liquid vapors. In fact, there have been no electronic spectroscopic data currently available for ionic-liquid vapors. This deficiency significantly hampers the fundamental understanding of the unique molecular structures of ionic liquids. Herein, the UV absorption spectra of eight ionic liquids, such as 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([Bmim(+)] [Tf(2)N(-)]) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(perfluoroethylsulfonyl)imide ([Emim(+)][beti(-)]) in the vapor phase in a distillation-like environment, were measured through a high-temperature spectroscopic technique to fill this knowledge gap. Two strong absorption peaks of the [Bmim(+)][Tf(2)N(-)] vapor lie at 202 and 211 nm, slightly different from those of the neat [Bmim(+)][Tf(2)N(-)] thin film and its solution in water. Based on the quantitative determination of the vapor absorption spectra as a function of temperature, the vaporization enthalpies of these ionic liquids vapors were measured and found to be in good agreement with the corresponding literature values. This in situ method opens up a new avenue to study the nature of ionic-liquid vapors and to determine the vaporization enthalpies of ionic liquids.
Toward a predictive model for estimating viscosity of ternary mixtures containing ionic liquids

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are widely under research and being more and more used in many industrial fields due to their unique properties. The knowledge of physicochemical properties of ILs is vital for their applications. Viscosity is one of the most important physical properties of ILs. Since the experimental measurement of viscosity is expensive, time consuming and cumbersome, seeking for a reliable and accurate model for predicting the viscosity of IL mixtures is essential. To this end, a large data bank, covering a wide range of ternary mixtures containing ILs, was collected from open literature sources. Afterwards, a rigorous modeling approach, namely least square support vector machine (LSSVM) was employed to predict the viscosity of ternary mixtures. The parameters of the model were optimized using coupled simulated annealing (CSA) optimization tool. The inputs of the model are boiling point temperature, molecular weight and composition of mixture compounds. Statistical and graphical error analyses indicated that the developed model can satisfactorily predict ternary mixture viscosity. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the proposed model is able to predict the actual physical trend of viscosity with variation of molecular weight and boiling point of ILs, ethanol content and water content. Furthermore, the relevancy factor demonstrated that the average boiling point of the ternary mixture has the greatest impact on the viscosity. Finally, the Leverage approach was performed, in which the statistical Hat matrix, Williams Plot, and the residuals of the model results led to recognition of the probable outliers. All the experimental data seem to be reliable except five data points. Thus, the developed model could be reliable for the prediction of ternary mixture viscosity in its applicability domain.

Abstract:In this study, the molecular structure models of four ionic liquids were created, the reverse nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation (RNEMD) approach was used to predict their densities and viscosities, and their thermal conductivity was simulated using the non-equilibrium molecular dynamic simulation method (NEMD). The calculated results of ionic liquid densities were compared with the data in the literature; most of the variances are around 2.5%, and the maximum relative deviation was less than 6.27%; viscosity values were compared with the experimental data, with a maximum relative deviation of −8.96% and a minimum relative deviation of −2.72%. The simulated thermal conductivity has a good linear relationship with respect to temperature and pressure, which is in good agreement. This study provides a reference for molecular dynamics simulation to measure the physical properties of ionic liquids, which is important for the development of ionic liquids.

On the concept of ionicity in ionic liquids

Abstract:Ionic liquids are liquids comprised totally of ions. However, not all of the ions present appear to be available to participate in conduction processes, to a degree that is dependent on the nature of the ionic liquid and its structure. There is much interest in quantifying and understanding this 'degree of ionicity' phenomenon. In this paper we present transport data for a range of ionic liquids and evaluate the data firstly in terms of the Walden plot as an approximate and readily accessible approach to estimating ionicity. An adjusted Walden plot that makes explicit allowance for differences in ion sizes is shown to be an improvement to this approach for the series of ionic liquids described. In some cases, where diffusion measurements are possible, it is feasible to directly quantify ionicity via the Nernst-Einstein equation, confirming the validity of the adjusted Walden plot approach. Some of the ionic liquids studied exhibit ionicity values very close to ideal; this is discussed in terms of a model of a highly associated liquid in which the ion correlations have similar impact on both the diffusive and conductive motions. Ionicity, as defined, is thus a useful measure of adherence to the Nernst-Einstein equation, but is not necessarily a measure of ion availability in the chemical sense.
Relative Volatilities of Ionic Liquids by Vacuum Distillation of Mixtures.

Abstract:The relative volatilities of a variety of common ionic liquids have been determined for the first time. Equimolar mixtures of ionic liquids were vacuum-distilled in a glass sublimation apparatus at approximately 473 K. The composition of the initial distillate, determined by NMR spectroscopy, was used to establish the relative volatility of each ionic liquid in the mixture. The effect of alkyl chain length was studied by distilling mixtures of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquids, or mixtures of N-alkyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquids, with different alkyl chain lengths. For both classes of salts, the volatility is highest when the alkyl side chain is a butyl group. The effect of cation structure on volatility has been determined by distilling mixtures containing different types of cations. Generally speaking, ionic liquids based on imidazolium and pyridinium cations are more volatile than ionic liquids based on ammonium and pyrrolidinium cations, regardless of the types of counterions present. Similarly, ionic liquids based on the anions [(C2F5SO2)2N](-), [(C4F9SO2)(CF3SO2)N](-) , and [(CF3SO2)2N](-) are more volatile than ionic liquids based on [(CF3SO2)3C](-) and [CF3SO3](-), and are much more volatile than ionic liquids based on [PF6](-).
Modified equation of state extended to imidazolium-, phosphonium-, pyridinium-, pyrrolidinium- and ammonium-based ionic liquids

Abstract:An analytical equation of state (EoS) has been previously employed by Hosseini and Sharafi (Ionics 17:511, 2011) for modelling of PVT data of some ionic liquids (ILs). In this work, we have extended the mentioned model to five classes of ILs by the use of alternative scaling constants for corresponding states correlation procedure. For this purpose, ILs involving imidazolium, phosphonium, pyridinium, pyrrolidinium and ammonium cations have been taken into account. From these, 1,294 experimental data points examined to show the reliability of the modified EoS. The comparison of predicted densities with the measured values over a broad range of temperature 293–452 K and pressures up to 150 MPa led to the encouraging results. The average absolute deviation of calculated densities from literature values was found to be 0.73%. Moreover, to establish the predictive power of proposed model, the reproduced densities have been compared with those obtained by another literature work. Moreover, we have demonstrated the density behaviour of studied ILs in terms of alkyl chain length of imidazolium cation via proposed model.

Probing the Origin of Viscosity of Liquid Electrolytes for Lithium Batteries.

Abstract:Viscosity is an extremely important property for ion transport and wettability of electrolytes. Easy access to viscosity values and a deep understanding of this property remain challenging yet critical to evaluating the electrolyte performance and tailoring electrolyte recipes with targeted properties. We proposed a screened overlapping method to efficiently compute the viscosity of lithium battery electrolytes by molecular dynamics simulations. The origin of electrolyte viscosity was further comprehensively probed. The viscosity of solvents exhibits a positive correlation with the binding energy between molecules, indicating viscosity is directly correlated to intermolecular interactions. Salts in electrolytes enlarge the viscosity significantly with increasing concentrations while diluents serve as the viscosity reducer, which is attributed to the varied binding strength from cation-anion and cation-solvent associations. This work develops an accurate and efficient method for computing the electrolyte viscosity and affords deep insight into viscosity at the molecular level, which exhibits the huge potential to accelerate advanced electrolyte design for next-generation rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Ionic liquids are promising candidates for electrolytes in energy-storage systems. We demonstrate that mixing two ionic liquids allows to precisely tune their physical properties, like the dc conductivity. Moreover, these mixtures enable the gradual modification of the fragility parameter, which is believed to be a measure of the complexity of the energy landscape in supercooled liquids. The physical origin of this index is still under debate; therefore, mixing ionic liquids can provide further insights. From the chemical point of view, tuning ionic liquids via mixing is an easy and thus an economic way. For this study, we performed detailed investigations by broadband dielectric spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry on two mixing series of ionic liquids. One series combines an imidazole based with a pyridine based ionic liquid and the other two different anions in an imidazole based ionic liquid. The analysis of the glass-transition temperatures and the thorough evaluations of the measured dielectric permittivity and conductivity spectra reveal that the dynamics in mixtures of ionic liquids are well defined by the fractions of their parent compounds.

Abstract:Eighteen protic ionic liquids containing different combinations of cations and anions, hydrophobicity, viscosity, and conductivity have been synthesized and their physicochemical properties determined. In one series, the diethanolammonium cations were combined with acetate, formate, hydrogen sulfate, chloride, sulfamate, and mesylate anions. In the second series, acetate and formate anions were combined with amine bases, triethylamine, diethylamine, triethanolamine, di-n-propylamine, and di-n-butylamine. The electrochemical characteristics of the eight protic ionic liquids that are liquid at room temperature (RTPILs) have been determined using cyclic, microelectrode, and rotating disk electrode voltammetries. Potential windows of the RTPILs have been compared at glassy carbon, platinum, gold, and boron-doped diamond electrodes and generally found to be the largest in the case of glassy carbon. The voltammetry of IUPAC recommended potential scale reference systems, ferrocene/ferrocenium and cobaltocenium/cobaltocene, have been evaluated and found to be ideal in the case of the less viscous RTPILs but involve adsorption in the highly viscous ones. Other properties such as diffusion coefficients, ionic conductivity, and double layer capacitance also have been measured. The influence of water on the potential windows, viscosity, and diffusion has been studied systematically by deliberate addition of water to the dried ionic liquids. The survey highlights the problems with voltammetric studies in highly viscous room temperature protic ionic liquids and also suggests the way forward with respect to their possible industrial use.
Modified Free-Volume Theory for the Viscosity Modeling of Ionic Liquids and Deep Eutectic Solvents

Abstract:The present work presents a modification to the free volume theory (FVT) in order to obtain improved representations of the dynamic viscosity of various representative last-generation ionic fluids: pure ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs). Within the formalism of the current FVT approach, the barrier energy that a molecule must overcome to diffuse is proportional to the density of the fluid. We found that this barrier energy was better expressed in terms of (rather than the density) a cohesive energy between molecules of the ionic fluid, namely, the residual internal energy, which accounts for all the intermolecular forces that oppose to the breaking of bonds, including both ionic and hydrogen bonds, which are typically present in ILs and DESs. In addition, one of the characteristic parameters of the FVT approach is the length parameter, which is usually treated as a constant. However, for the present purposes, it was made density dependent. The thermodynamic potentials (residual internal energy and density) present in the resulting modified FVT model were estimated from two simple cubic equations of state of the van der Waals type: Soave−Redlich−Kwong or Peng–Robinson. The two aforementioned modifications introduced to the FVT approach were successfully verified during the representation of experimental dynamic viscosities of 3 families of imidazolium-based ILs ([CXmim][BF4], [CXmim][PF6] and [CXmim][Tf2N]), one pyridinium-based IL ([b3mpy][BF4]), one pyrrolidinium-based IL ([bmpyr][Tf2N]), and one ammonium-based IL ([N1114][Tf2N]) over a temperature range varying from 273.15 to 353.15 K and at pressures from 1 to 3000 bar. We also considered three archetypal choline chloride-based DESs for model validation: reline, ethaline, and glyceline within a temperature range varying from 293.15 to 373.15 K and at pressures from 1 to 1000 bar.
