Abstract:The maternal environment can influence the intensity of seed dormancy and thus seasonal germination timing and post-germination life history traits. We tested the hypotheses that germination season influences phenotypic expression of post-germination life history traits in the cold desert annual Isatis violascens and that plants from autumn- and spring-germinating seeds produce different proportions of seeds with nondeep and intermediate physiological dormancy (PD). Seeds were sown in summer and flexibility in various life history traits determined for plants that germinated in autumn and in spring. A higher percentage of spring- than of autumn-germinating plants survived the seedling stage, and all surviving plants reproduced. Number of silicles increased with plant size (autumn- > spring-germinating plants), whereas percent dry mass allocated to reproduction was higher in spring- than in autumn-germinating plants. Autumn-germinating plants produced proportionally more seeds with intermediate PD than spring-germinating plants, while spring-germinating plants produced proportionally more seeds with nondeep PD than autumn-germinating plants. Flexibility throughout the life history and transgenerational plasticity in seed dormancy are adaptations of I. violascens to its desert habitat. Our study is the first to demonstrate that autumn- and spring-germinating plants in a species population differ in proportion of seeds produced with different levels of PD.

Abstract:Seeds from 13 cultivars and 11 F1 generations were applied in seed dormancy test.All the seeds were harvested in 35 days after heading.Under 30 ℃,germination frequencies of intact seeds from Nanjing 11,Guichao 2 were exceeded 80 %,while from IR 36,Koshihicari,N 22 were only 19%,2% and 0%,respectively,and all F2 generation had a lower germination frequency than their respective parents(except N 22).Germination frequency of dehusked seeds markedly increased respectively,especially in F2 generation.The experiment showed that amylase activity was negatively related to seed dormancy.The change of endogenous ABA and GA3 content in seeds after absorbed water showed that lower ratio of GA3/ABA was related to the dormancy of rice seed.

Abstract:The transition from dormancy to germination is crucial for malt barley in the malt house. Seed dormancy is a quantitative trait and the depths of dormancy controlled by environment/genetics remain unclear. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis was conducted to evaluate the number, location and phenotypic variation explained by QTLs from data collected from different years, sites and germination conditions in the Stirling × Harrington population. QTLs on 4H, 5H and 6H could explain 25, 81 and 12 % of phenotypic variations, respectively. Consistent QTLs were detected on 5HL and other QTLs were subjected to growth or germination conditions. Germination tests under light detected more QTLs than in the dark. The QTL at 5HL were more important for seed dormancy under the Mediterranean environment and evidence showed at least two genes controlling seed dormancy at 5HL.

Abstract:Sand burial plays important role in the life history of species in sandy areas of arid and semi-arid temperate regions, by affecting seed germination, seedling growth and survival and plant community. However, few studies have focused on the effects of sand burial on the dynamics of seed dormancy in such areas. In this study, seed germination characteristics of Allium tenuissimum, a dominant perennial herb in the dune ecosystem in Ordos Plateau in northern China, was investigated. Dormancy dynamics were monitored for seeds buried at sand depths of 0, 2 and 5 cm in the natural habitats for 13 months. Freshly matured seeds of A. tenuissimum were conditionally dormant and germinated to high percentages at high but not low temperatures. Germination percentages were increased by incubation at summer temperature (15/25 °C) and dry storage, but GA3 and cold stratification had no significant effects. These results suggested that seeds of A. tenuissimum were conditionally dormant, and incubation under warm, wet (but not cold, wet) conditions and dry after-ripening resulted in complete dormancy releasing. Seeds buried at 2 and 5 cm in the field for 13 months exhibited seasonal changes in germination, with an increase in spring and summer followed by decrease in autumn and winter. However, seeds on the soil surface (0 cm) gradually came out of dormancy beginning in January, and germinated percentage was highest in July, after which remained high. The peak of nondormancy for seeds buried in the field was in the summer, which corresponds to the period of highest annual precipitation. Sand burial helped mediate seeds dormancy dynamics of A. tenuissimum via seasonal dormancy cycling. Our finding contributes to a better understanding of how timing of seedling establishment is controlled in a semiarid dune ecosystem in temperate climate.
Genetic dissection of the seed dormancy trait in cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Abstract:Seed dormancy is an important trait for the analysis and manipulation of pre-harvest sprouting resistance in rice. This study presents data on dissection of the genetic basis of the seed dormancy character in the indica cultivar N22, which exhibits levels of dormancy highly in excess of traditional rice cultivars. Three simple sequence repeat (SSR)-based linkage maps derived from two BC1-type populations of Nanjing35 (a japonica non-dormant breeding line)/N22//Nanjing35 and USSR5 (non-dormant japonica cultivar)/N22//USSR5, and one F2 population of USSR5/N22, were constructed to detect genes controlling seed dormancy. Five quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for seed dormancy, i.e., qSdn-1, qSdnj-3, qSdn-5, qSdn-7 and qSdn-11, were identified on chromosomes 1, 3, 5, 7 and 11, respectively. The N22-derived alleles were observed to increase the seed dormancy at all the loci except qSdnj-3. Genes conferring seed dormancy in N22 showed incomplete dominance effect. Two QTLs, qSdn-5 and qSdn-11 were detected in the two BC1 populations, while qSdnj-3 and qSdn-7 were only identified in the one BC1 population (Nanjing35/N22//Nanjing35), whereas the QTL qSdn-1 was common in all the three populations. The dormancy trait was expressed whenever any of the dormancy genes presents and can be further improved by pyramiding these genes. Of all QTLs, qSdn-1 provided the most obvious target for marker-assisted selection (MAS) due to its stability for improving rice pre-harvest sprouting tolerance.
Physiological Changes and Shsps Genes Relative Transcription in Relation to the Acquisition of Seed Germination During Maturation of Hybrid Rice Seed.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:During the production of early hybrid rice seed, the seeds dehydrated slowly and retained high moisture levels when rainy weather lasted for a couple of days, and the rice seeds easily occurred pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) along with high temperature. Therefore it is necessary to harvest the seeds before the PHS occurred.RESULTS:The seeds of hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L. subsp. indica) cv. Qianyou No1 that harvests from 19 to 28 days after pollination (DAP) all had high seed vigour. The seed moisture content at 10 DAP was 36.1%, and declined to 28.6% at 19 DAP; the contents of soluble sugar and total starch increased significantly with the development of seeds. The soluble protein content, the level of abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellin (GA3 ), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity continued to decrease from 10 DAP to 19 DAP. The seeds at 19 DAP had the highest peroxidase (POD) activity and lowest catalase (CAT) activity while the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity had no significant difference among the different developing periods. The relative expressions of genes 64S Hsp18.0 and Os03g0267200 transcripts increased significantly from 10 to 19 DAP, and then decreased. However, no significant change was recorded in soluble protein, sugar and GA3 after 16 DAP, and they all significantly correlated with seed viability and vigour during the process of seed maturity.CONCLUSION:The seeds of hybrid rice Qianyou No1 had a higher viability and vigour when harvested from 19 DAP to 28 DAP, the transcription levels of 64S Hsp18.0 and Os03g0267200 increased significantly from 10 DAP to 19 DAP and the highest value was recorded at 19 DAP. The seeds could be harvested as early as 19 DAP without negative influence on seed vigour and viability.

Abstract:Physiological dormancy (PD) is the most common class of seed dormancy on earth. It is highly variable and is an important part of the adaptation of many species to their habitat. Often, two questions are asked about seeds that failed to germinate in a germination test: (1) are they non-viable or dormant, and (2) if dormant do they have PD and how is it broken? We provide an overview on how to approach studies of species with PD for which few or no data are available. Information about habitat environmental conditions during the seed stage can be used to formulate hypotheses on dormancy-breaking and germination requirements. These hypotheses can be tested by a move-along experiment. There are three levels of PD, and they are distinguished by the conditions required to break PD and promote germination. Seeds with non-deep PD (the most common level of PD) require different conditions for dormancy-break and germination, i.e. a change in the season, while those with intermediate and deep PD germinate at the dormancy-breaking conditions, e.g. during a long period of cold stratification. Knowing how to break PD enhances testing for seed viability and helps ensure high germination percentages of viable seeds.

Abstract:Sapium sebiferum seeds were harvested from the marked donor individual at five developmental stages of maturity to study the changes in fresh weight, dry weight, moisture content, germination percentage, endogenous inhibitor activity, and plant growth regulators (PGRs) content. Moisture content of seeds declined from 46.98% (collected on September 1) to 12.00% (collected on November 1). Fresh weight decreased while dry weight increased significantly during seed development. Germination inhibitor activity in the seed coat and endosperm increased during seed maturation and at the same developmental stage, and inhibitor activity in the seed coat was higher than that in the endosperm. Excised embryos were capable of germinating for seeds collected on September 16, and maximum germination percentage was observed for seeds collected on October 16. With increasing seed maturation, gibberellins (GAs) content decreased while abscisic acid (ABA) content increased in both the stratified and untreated seeds. Compared to the untreated controls, the stratified seeds were consistently found to have lower ABA content and higher GAs content throughout different developmental stages. During the course of seed development, the GAs : ABA ratio was found to steadily decrease in both the stratified and untreated seeds, with an exceptional observation for seeds collected on October 1 that underwent stratification. With increasing seed maturity, the germination of untreated seeds initially increased but declined after October 1. Stratified seeds showed the same trend, with higher germination percentage than the control at all developmental stages. Results of this study showed that seeds harvested in September were immature and incapable of germinating, whereas those harvested in November were fully mature but showed strong dormancy. This study showed that seeds are ready to harvest on October 1, and they will be naturally dispersed in November. Thus we propose to harvest seeds before the middle of October for rapid and efficient germination.

Abstract:1. Many internal (inherent) and environmental (imposed) factors control seed dormancy and germination that we divide into three basic dormancy‐release pathways: Maternal structures and embryo physiology control inherent dormancy that is broken by various types of scarification and physiological changes, followed by imposed‐dormancy release when the prevailing environment is replaced by certain 'standard' conditions that stimulate germination (Pathway 1); imposed dormancy prevails even if inherent dormancy is broken or not applicable that is released when replaced by certain 'standard' environmental conditions which stimulate germination (Pathway 2); release from inherent dormancy by light/dark or cold stratification is contingent on the pre‐existence of certain environmental conditions that stimulate germination (Pathway 3). On‐plant seed storage (serotiny) and frugivorous seeds are recognized here as representing special types of physical dormancy, as their properties are consistent with those of hard diaspores. Warm stratification does not require seeds to be moist as it is just a physical response. Heat may promote germination of non‐hard, as well as hard, seeds as it may increase their permeability further. 3. Levels of germination gauge the net effect of inherent‐ and imposed‐dormancy release so that it is only possible to identify the extent of inherent‐dormancy release when conditions for germination are optimal (imposed dormancy has been annulled). While imposed dormancy may be protracted after inherent dormancy is broken by heat or chilling during the dry or cold seasons, release from both states may effectively coincide if smoke chemicals or light are received during the (wet) growing season. 4. We suggest reserving the term secondary dormancy for seeds that return to (inherent or imposed) dormancy due to changed environmental conditions. Under seasonal climates, fluctuations in environmental conditions can lead to secondary dormancy and even dormancy cycling. 5. We recognize four types of functional interactions between any two environmental factors that induce inherent‐dormancy release: binary interactions are ineffective, only one stimulus is effective, both are effective but non‐additive, or both are additive/synergistic. Two environmental stimuli that individually break dormancy but have no additive effect must be affecting the same process; this was demonstrated here for some interactions between heat and smoke. 6. The three dormancy‐release pathways, together with internal, seasonal and stochastic interactions, are coordinated by the non‐dormant seed to ensure maximum germination under optimal conditions. To ignore any aspect outlined here leads to an impoverished understanding of the disparate seed ecology of species adapted to different stressful and disturbance‐prone habitats.

Abstract:The calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase CCaMK forms a complex with its phosphorylation target CIP73 (CCaMK-interacting protein of 73 kDa). In this work, a homolog of the animal HSC/HSP70 interacting protein (HIP) was identified as an interacting partner of CIP73 in Lotus japonicus. L. japonicus HIP contains all functional domains characteristic of animal HIP proteins. The C-terminal STI1-like domain of L. japonicus HIP was found to be necessary and sufficient for interaction with CIP73. The interaction between CIP73 and HIP occurred in both the nuclei and cytoplasm in Nicotiana benthamiana leaf cells. The interactions between CIP73 and HIP and between CIP73 and CCaMK could take place simultaneously in the same nuclei. HIP transcripts were detected in all plant tissues tested. As nodule primordia developed into young nodules, the expression of HIP was down-regulated and the HIP transcript level became very low in mature nodules. More nodules were formed in transgenic hairy roots of L. japonicus expressing HIP RNA interference at 16 days postinoculation as compared with the control hairy roots expressing the empty vector. It appears that HIP may play a role as a negative regulator for nodulation.

Abstract:We provided a gene pool of moderate size for selecting or manipulating the candidate genes that favour the acquisition of seed dormancy, shedding light on the elevation of seed oil content in oilseed rape by blocking lipid degradation in developing seeds. In oilseed rape, the association between the germination potential of premature seeds and the final level of seed lipids, and the underlying mechanism, is elusive. Here, we investigated phenotypic differences in the germination percentage of premature seeds in a collection of oilseed rape cultivars. We compared the dynamic lipid accumulation between the deep-, moderate- and non-dormant genotypes and compared the transcriptomes of the seeds at 40 days after pollination between multiple pairs of deep- and non-dormant genotypes. We identified a wide range of differences in germination percentage of premature seeds and the association between the germination potential and the change of fatty acid content at late stage of seed maturation. The comparisons of transcriptomes between deep- and non-dormant seeds revealed the genetic basis for the dormant difference, e.g. the different expression levels of the genes involved in gibberellic and abscisic acid biosynthesis and/or signalling, fatty acid metabolic pathways, and the structure of seed cell wall. Effects of cold stratification on the endogenous hormone, dormancy and germination of Cornus walteri Wanger seeds

Abstract:The most critical phase in plant life is the germination period, which is influenced by both intrinsic and environmental factors. Assessment of cold stratification on several endogenous hormone, IAA, abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellin GA1/3 (GA1/3), zeatin-riboside (ZRs) and isopen-tenyl adenine (iPAs), and germination of Cornus walteri Wanger. seeds was done. Relationship between endogenous hormone and seed germination and mechanism of seed dormancy of C. walteri were also analysed. The results showed that the significant fluctuatation of both IAA and iPAs content was fond during cold stratification period, while the variation of ZRs was little, that of both ABA and GAs content increased with old stratification days. Effects of cold stratification on both GR and GP were significant (p < 0.05), which play an important role in releaving of seed germination and improving seed germination. The GR and GP were significantly negatively correlated with the contents of ABA and GA1/3, and positively correlated with the following iPAs, ZRs/ABA, iPAs/ABA.

However, the physiological potential expression in inbred lines, as well as hybrids from the storage reserves hydrolysis, is not clear. Thus, the aim of this study was focused on verifying if there are differences in the hydrolysis of seed storage reserve of maize inbred lines or hybrids during germination, and also checking if the changes in hydrolysis are associated with seed vigor. The seeds of inbred lines and hybrids were submitted to germination test, vigor by accelerated aging and cold tolerance. Biochemical profiling (total protein content, soluble proteins, phytate, inorganic phosphorus, starch, and soluble sugars), was temporally determined at 0 h (quiescent seeds), 12 h, 24 h, 30 h, and 48 h after imbibition. The seeds of inbred lines showed a longer time for root protrusion and less vigor when compared to hybrids. The highest hydrolysis rates in inbred lines were observed in phase I and at the end of phase II of germination. In hybrids, the rates remained, on average, constant throughout germination. The greatest differences in the hydrolysis of reserve compounds occur in phase II of germination and differentiate the germination metabolism of hybrids and inbred lines.

Quantitative Description of the Effect of Stratification on Dormancy Release of Grape Seeds in Response to Various Temperatures and Water Contents

Abstract:The effect of stratification on dormancy release of grape seeds crossing from the sub- to the supraoptimal range of temperatures and water contents was analysed by modified threshold models. The stratification impacted on dormancy release in three different ways: (i) dormancy was consistently released with prolonged stratification time when stratified at temperatures of <15 °C; (ii) at 15 °C and 20 °C, the stratification effect initially increased, and then decreased with extended time; and (iii) stratification at 25 °C only reduced germinable seeds. These behaviours indicated that stratification could not only release primary dormancy but also induce secondary dormancy in grape seed. The rate of dormancy release changed linearly in two phases, while induction increased exponentially with increasing temperature. The thermal time approaches effectively quantified dormancy release only at suboptimal temperature, but a quantitative method to integrate the occurrence of dormancy release and induction at the same time could describe it well at either sub- or supraoptimal temperatures. The regression with the percentage of germinable seeds versus stratification temperature or water content within both the sub- and supraoptimal range revealed how the optimal temperature (Tso) and water content (Wso) for stratification changed. The Tso moved from 10.6 °C to 5.3 °C with prolonged time, while Wso declined from >0.40 g H2O g DW−1 at 5 °C to ∼0.23 g H2O g DW−1 at 30 °C. Dormancy release in grape seeds can occur across a very wide range of conditions, which has important implications for their ability to adapt to a changeable environment in the wild.
Physical dormancy alleviation at room temperature storage is influenced by the initial moisture content of the seeds

Abstract:In seeds with impermeable coats, i.e., physical dormancy (PY), dormancy break may occur at room temperature during ex-situ storage or when seeds experiencing similar conditions when buried in the soil. Here, we tested the influence of initial seed moisture content and storage on dormancy break in the seeds of Adenanthera pavonina , Bauhinia racemosa , Cassia fistula , Dodonaea viscosa , and Delonix regia . Drying results in most seeds of these species becoming water-impermeable. We arbitrarily chose two moisture ranges, shallow (impermeable, high moisture content) and absolute (impermeable, low moisture content) PY, and stored the seeds at room temperature for 8.5 years. The moisture content at which the permeable to impermeable transition occurred and the range constituting shallow and absolute PY varied between species. Across species, the shallow PY group had a significantly higher number of nondormant seeds at the end of storage, whereas the absolute PY group did not show any germination, except c . 20% germination in A. pavonina and C. fistula . Thus, PY break in seeds stored at room temperature may occur after several years, but this largely depends on the initial seed moisture content.

[Using pedicled rectus abdominis musculocutaneous flaps in thigh and lumber defects].

Abstract:BACKGROUND A series of previously described but rarely used variations of the pedicled, extended or vertical rectus abdominis musculocutaneous flap (Extended RAM, VRAM) were reviewed. METHODS Skin paddle dimensions, ranged 8 to 28 cm in width and 10 to 35 cm in length, were used in five consecutive patients. Four flaps were placed deep to the inguinal ligament to repair the thigh as proximal to the knee region; the remaining one flap was passed transabdominally to cover the defect of the lumbar region. RESULTS No flaps necrosis were seen and in one case wound healing problems required minimal operative intervention. Successful transfer of the VRAM and extended RAM with low rate of complication for the thigh and lumbar region defects were demonstrated to be safe and reasonable options of flap reconstruction. DISCUSSION The flaps had the advantages of being robust and well-vascularized, easy and fast to harvest, and not requiring microsurgery experience.
Differential control of seed primary dormancy in Arabidopsis ecotypes by the transcription factor SPATULA

Abstract:Freshly matured seeds exhibit primary dormancy, which prevents germination until environmental conditions are favorable. The establishment of dormancy occurs during seed development and involves both genetic and environmental factors that impact on the ratio of two antagonistic phytohormones: abscisic acid (ABA), which promotes dormancy, and gibberellic acid, which promotes germination. Although our understanding of dormancy breakage in mature seeds is well advanced, relatively little is known about the mechanisms involved in establishing dormancy during seed maturation. We previously showed that the SPATULA (SPT) transcription factor plays a key role in regulating seed germination. Here we investigate its role during seed development and find that, surprisingly, it has opposite roles in setting dormancy in Landsberg erecta and Columbia Arabidopsis ecotypes. We also find that SPT regulates expression of five transcription factor encoding genes: ABA-INSENSITIVE4 ( ABI4 ) and ABI5 , which mediate ABA signaling; REPRESSOR-OF-GA ( RGA ) and RGA-LIKE3 involved in gibberellic acid signaling; and MOTHER-OF-FT-AND-TFL1 ( MFT ) that we show here promotes Arabidopsis seed dormancy. Although ABI4 , RGA , and MFT are repressed by SPT, ABI5 and RGL3 are induced. Furthermore, we show that RGA , MFT , and ABI5 are direct targets of SPT in vivo. We present a model in which SPT drives two antagonistic “dormancy-repressing” and “dormancy-promoting” routes that operate simultaneously in freshly matured seeds. Each of these routes has different impacts and this in turn explains the opposite effect of SPT on seed dormancy of the two ecotypes analyzed here.

Abstract:To investigate dormancy and release mechanisms of grape seeds,we compared seed morphologi-cal characteristics and germination behavior of different grape varieties and their dormancy release under different conditions including an alternative temperature change simulation for a season cycle.The grape va-rieties tested included species introduced from three distribution centers(America,Europe-Asia and East-Asia)and their cross breeds.Seed dormancy of all varieties was attributed to physiological dormancy,but varied in degree of dormancy.The dormancy-releasing requirements of different varieties also differed,correlating to their genetic backgrounds.As a whole,seeds of Europe-Asia species and East-Asia species ex-hibited a lower degree of dormancy,compared to a relatively high degree of dormancy for American species.For Europe-Asia species,East-Asia species and their cross breeds,seed dormancy was effectively broken by cold stratification(5oC)and partially broken by alternative temperature stratification viz.20oC(14 h)/10oC(10 h)and 30oC(14 h)/20oC(10 h)for two months.As for American species and cross breeds with Europe-Asia species,seed dormancy could only be broken by more than six-month cold stratification;neither alternative temperature stratification nor warm stratification(25oC)affected seed dormancy release.Experi-ments simulating seasonal alternative changes further showed that seed dormancy degrees were related to their proveniences and adaptations to environment.Our results provide basic data for germplasm introduction and breeding of grapes.
Environmental and seed‐position effects on viability and germination of buried seeds of an invasive diaspore‐heteromorphic annual grass

Abstract:Environmental factors, such as temperature and moisture, and plant factors, such as seed position on the mother plant, can affect seed viability and germination. However, little is known about the viability and germination of seeds in different positions on the mother plant after burial in soil under natural environmental conditions. Here, diaspores from three positions on a compound spike and seeds from two/three positions in a diaspore of the invasive diaspore‐heteromorphic annual grass Aegilops tauschii were buried at four depths for more than 2 years (1–26 months) under natural conditions and viability and germination monitored monthly. Viability of seeds in each diaspore/seed position decreased as burial depth and duration increased and was associated with changes in soil temperature and moisture. Germination was highest at 2 cm and lowest at 10 cm soil depths, with peaks and valleys in autumn/spring and winter/summer, respectively. Overall, seeds in distal diaspore and distal seed positions had higher germination percentages than those in basal diaspore and basal seed positions, but basal ones lived longer than distal ones. Chemical content of fresh diaspores/seeds was related to diaspore/seed position effects on seed germination and viability during burial. We conclude that seeds in distal diaspores/seed positions have a 'high risk' strategy and those in basal positions a 'low risk' strategy. The two risk strategies may act as a bet‐hedging strategy that spreads risks of germination failure in the soil seed bank over time, thereby facilitating the survival and invasiveness of A. tauschii.

Abstract:Seed dormancy and germination are the two important traits related to plant survival, reproduction and crop yield. To understand the regulatory mechanisms of these traits, it is crucial to clarify which genes or pathways participate in the regulation of these processes. However, little information is available on seed dormancy and germination in peanut. In this study, seeds of the variety Luhua No.14, which undergoes nondeep dormancy, were selected, and their transcriptional changes at three different developmental stages, the freshly harvested seed (FS), the after-ripening seed (DS) and the newly germinated seed (GS) stages, were investigated by comparative transcriptomic analysis. The results showed that genes with increased transcription in the DS vs FS comparison were overrepresented for oxidative phosphorylation, the glycolysis pathway and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, suggesting that after a period of dry storage, the intermediates stored in the dry seeds were rapidly mobilized by glycolysis, the TCA cycle, the glyoxylate cycle, etc.; the electron transport chain accompanied by respiration was reactivated to provide ATP for the mobilization of other reserves and for seed germination. In the GS vs DS pairwise comparison, dozens of the upregulated genes were related to plant hormone biosynthesis and signal transduction, including the majority of components involved in the auxin signal pathway, brassinosteroid biosynthesis and signal transduction as well as some GA and ABA signal transduction genes. During seed germination, the expression of some EXPANSIN and XYLOGLUCAN ENDOTRANSGLYCOSYLASE genes was also significantly enhanced. To investigate the effects of different hormones during seed germination, the contents and differential distribution of ABA, GAs, BRs and IAA in the cotyledons, hypocotyls and radicles, and plumules of three seed sections at different developmental stages were also investigated. Combined with previous data in other species, it was suggested that the coordination of multiple hormone signal transduction nets plays a key role in radicle protrusion and seed germination.
