Abstract:Background: Chronic inflammation is implicated in the development of colorectal cancer (CRC) and its precursor; colorectal adenomatous polyps (CAP). Some dietary factors are important triggers for systemic inflammation. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII®) and the risk of CRC and CAP in an Iranian case-control study. Methods: 134 newly diagnosed CRC patients, 130 newly diagnosed CAP patients, and 240 hospitalized controls were recruited using convenience sampling. Energy-adjusted DII (E-DII) scores were computed based on dietary intake assessed using a reproducible and valid 148-item food frequency questionnaire. Logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) after adjusting for confounders. Results: The E-DII score ranged between -4.23 (the most anti-inflammatory score) to +3.89 (the most pro-inflammatory score). The multivariable-adjusted ORs for participants in the 3rd tertile compared to the 1st tertile was 5.08 (95%CI: 2.70-9.56; P-trend < 0.0001) for CRC and 2.33 (95% CI: 1.30-4.02; P-trend = 0.005) for CAP. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that more pro-inflammatory diets, indicated by higher E-DII scores, might increase the risk of both CRC and CAP. Future steps should include testing these associations in a prospective setting in Iran.

Abstract:Diet and chronic inflammation of the colon have been suggested to be risk factors in the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). The possible link between inflammatory potential of diet, measured through the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®), and CRC has been investigated in several populations across the world. The aim of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis on studies exploring this association. Data from nine studies were eligible, of which five were case-control and four were cohort studies. Results from meta-analysis showed a positive association between increasing DII scores, indicating a pro-inflammatory diet, and CRC. Individuals in the highest versus the lowest (reference) DII category showed an overall 40% increased risk of CRC with moderate evidence of heterogeneity [relative risk (RR) = 1.40, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.26, 1.55; I² = 69%, p < 0.001]. When analyzed as a continuous variable, results showed an increased risk of CRC of 7% for a 1-point increase in the DII score. Results remained unchanged when analyses were restricted to the four prospective studies. Results of our meta-analysis support the importance of adopting a healthier anti-inflammatory diet in preventing CRC. These results further substantiate the utility of DII as tool to characterize the inflammatory potential of diet and to predict CRC.

Abstract:Background: Colorectal cancer, the third most common cancer in the United States, has a natural history that usually encompasses several decades. Dietary components have been implicated in the etiology of colorectal cancer, perhaps through their effect on inflammation. Methods: We examined the ability of the dietary inflammatory index (DII) to predict colorectal cancer in the Iowa Women's Health Study. The DII was computed based on dietary intake assessed by a 121-item food frequency questionnaire in this cohort of 34,703 women, ages 55 to 69 years, free of any self-reported prior malignancy at enrollment in 1986. Incident colorectal cancer cases were identified through linkage with the State Health Registry of Iowa (a Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program member). Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate HRs. Through the end of 2010, 1,636 incident colorectal cancers were identified, including 1,329 colon and 325 rectal cancers. Results: Multivariable analysis, adjusting for body mass index, smoking status, pack-years of smoking, hormone replacement therapy, education, diabetes, and total energy intake, revealed positive associations between higher DII and colorectal cancer risk [HR for DIIcontinuous: 1.07 per unit increase in DII (corresponding to 0.5 SD unit increase); 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.01-1.13; HR for DIIquintiles: Q5 vs. Q1 = 1.20; 95% CI, 1.01-1.43]. HRs for DII were similar for colon cancer and rectal cancer, though not statistically significant for rectal cancer. Conclusions: These results indicate that a proinflammatory diet, as indicated by higher DII scores, was associated with higher risk of developing colorectal cancer. Impact: Proinflammatory diets are associated with increased risk of colorectal cancer.

Abstract:Diet and inflammation have been suggested to be important risk factors for colorectal cancer (CRC). In the present study, we examined the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and the risk of CRC in a multi-centre case-control study conducted between 1992 and 1996 in Italy. The study included 1225 incident colon cancer cases, 728 incident rectal cancer cases and 4154 controls hospitalised for acute non-neoplastic diseases. The DII was computed based on dietary intake assessed using a validated seventy-eight-item FFQ that included assessment of alcohol intake. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the OR adjusted for age, sex, study centre, education, BMI, alcohol drinking, physical activity and family history of CRC. Energy intake was adjusted using the residual method. Subjects with higher DII scores (i.e. with a more pro-inflammatory diet) had a higher risk of CRC, with the DII being used both as a continuous variable (OR(continuous) 1.13, 95 % CI 1.09, 1.18) and as a categorical variable (OR(quintile 5 v. 1) 1.55, 95 % CI 1.29, 1.85; P for trend < 0.0001). Similar results were observed when the analyses were carried out separately for colon and rectal cancer cases. These results indicate that a pro-inflammatory diet is associated with an increased risk of CRC.

Abstract:Chronic inflammation is an important factor in colorectal carcinogenesis. However, evidence on the effect of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory foods and nutrients is scarce. Moreover, there are few studies focusing on diet-gene interactions on inflammation and colorectal cancer (CRC). This study was designed to investigate the association between the novel dietary inflammatory index (DII) and CRC and its potential interaction with polymorphisms in inflammatory genes. Data from the Bellvitge Colorectal Cancer Study, a case-control study (424 cases with incident colorectal cancer and 401 hospital-based controls), were used. The DII score for each participant was obtained by multiplying intakes of dietary components from a validated dietary history questionnaire by literature-based dietary inflammatory weights that reflected the inflammatory potential of components. Data from four important single nucleotide polymorphisms located in genes thought to be important in inflammation-associated CRC: i.e., interleukin (IL)-4, IL-6, IL-8, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARG) were analyzed. A direct association was observed between DII score and CRC risk (ORQ4 vs. Q1 1.65, 95 % CI 1.05-2.60, and P trend 0.011). A stronger association was found with colon cancer risk (ORQ4 vs. Q1 2.24, 95 % CI 1.33-3.77, and P trend 0.002) than rectal cancer risk (ORQ4 vs. Q1 1.12, 95 % CI 0.61-2.06, and P trend 0.37). DII score was inversely correlated with SNP rs2243250 in IL-4 among controls, and an interaction was observed with CRC risk. Neither correlation nor interaction was detected for other inflammatory genes. Overall, high-DII diets are associated with increased risk of CRC, particularly for colon cancer, suggesting that dietary-mediated inflammation plays an important role in colorectal carcinogenesis.

Abstract:Trajectory of an optical vortex has been identified for its propagation in atmospheric turbulence using numerical simulations. An analytical expression has been found, relating the radial departure of the vortex in plane perpendicular to the direction of propagation, to the refractive index structure function parameter and the inner scale of turbulence. The angular orientation of the vortex in the same transverse plane is found to be related to the anisotropy of the medium. The obtained results provide an alternative way to find turbulent parameters with the help of optical vortices.

Abstract:Obesity-mediated inflammation represents a key connection between the intake of foods with high inflammatory potential and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. We aimed to explore the association between energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) in relation to CRC risk in both obese and non-obese subjects. This study included 99 histopathologically confirmed CRC cases, 73 colonic polyps cases, and 141 healthy controls from tertiary medical centres in both urban and suburban areas in Peninsular Malaysia. The subjects were categorised into body mass index (BMI) < 25 kg/m2 and BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 groups. E-DII scores were computed based on dietary intake assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), adjusted for potential cofounders. The mean dietary energy intake and mean BMI values of the subjects tended to increase as the E-DII scores increased (p for trend < 0.001). E-DII was significantly related to CRC risk only in obese subjects (OR = 1.45; 95% CI = 1.30-1.77; p < 0.001 for trend). Stratified analyses of risk factors showed significant associations between E-DII and CRC risk by age group (p for interaction = 0.030), smoking status (p for interaction = 0.043), and anthropometric indices for both males and females (p for interaction < 0.001) in the most pro-inflammatory E-DII quartile vs. the lowest E-DII quartile. Overall, pro-inflammatory diets were associated with an increased incidence of CRC in the Malaysian population, particularly in obese subjects.

Abstract:Background: Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is a gastrointestinal ulcer caused by gastric acid. Aging, smoking and alcohol, stressful life, and family history are directly related to PUD. Oxidative stress and inflammation are the most important mechanisms involved in PUD. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association of dietary inflammatory index (DII) with the risk of PUD. Methods: In this case-control study, data from 100 newly diagnosed peptic ulcer patients and 150 healthy individuals were analyzed. DII was assessed based on dietary intake data collected through a 174-item validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). To calculate DII, 36 nutrients and food components were used after adjusting the energy intake. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) regarding the association between DII and PUD risk were estimated by logistic regression. Results: The mean DII score in patients (0.43±1.88) was significantly higher than the mean DII in healthy individuals (-2.88±2.00) (P=0.005), i.e. patients had received more inflammatory diet. In the crude model of PUD, odds increased significantly in the third and fourth quartiles of DII score compared to the lowest quartile (OR of third quartile vs first quartile: 2.65, 95% CI:1.27-5.52, respectively; and OR of fourth quartile vs first quartile: 2.33, 95% CI:1.12-4.85, respectively; P- trend=0.001). After checking multiple potential confounders, OR in third and fourth quartiles remained high and there was no change in the results. Conclusions: These findings suggest that more pro-inflammatory diets, indicated by higher DII scores, may increase the risk of PUD. Therefore, anti-inflammatory diet may play a protective role against PUD.
Linkage mapping of new X-linked juvenile retinoschisis kindreds using microsatellite markers.

Abstract:X-linked retinoschisis (RS) is an inherited bilateral eye disorder with variable clinical manifestations. Previous studies have localized RS locus to the region Xp22.1-p22.3 on the short arm of the X-chromosome. In an attempt to map the RS locus more precisely, we have performed linkage analysis in four previously unreported kindreds of different geographic origins using six microsatellite markers - DXS987, DXS207, DXS999, DXS443, DXS365 and DXS274 -- all located in the region Xp22.1-p22.3. Two point analysis suggests linkage to DXS207 (Zmax = 1.8 at theta max = 0) and DXS999, DXS443, DXS365 and DXS274 (Zmax = 1.2 at theta max = 0). Multipoint analysis has confirmed this linkage with these same markers (Zmax = 2.107 at theta = 0). There are no recombinants between the disease phenotype and the above markers. These results indicate that RS gene in our families is located in the same inclusion interval (between DXS987 and DXS274) reported for other RS families. Furthermore, they confirm the lack of genetic/locus heterogeneity of RS.

Abstract:Diet represents an important set of potential risk factors for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a known inflammatory condition. This case-control study examined the association between the inflammatory potential of diet, as determined by the dietary inflammatory index (DII®), and RA risk in an Iranian population. The present Case–control study was conducted on 100 RA patients and 200 age- and sex-matched controls in Isfahan, Iran. The presence of RA was determined by expert Rheumatologist assessment based on the American College of Rheumatology definitions. A 168-item food frequency questionnaire was used to collect dietary intake from which DII scores were computed. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between the DII, expressed in tertiles, and RA risk were estimated by two multivariable logistic regression models, one crude model and one in which we controlled for important potential confounders. In the crude model, individuals in the top DII tertile (most pro-inflammatory diet) had more than triple the risk of RA compared to those in the lowest tertile (OR tertile3vs1 = 3.57; 95% CI, 1.95-6.53; p < 0.001 ) . The association was essentially unchanged after controlling for potential confounders (OR tertile3vs1 = 3.83; 95% CI, 1.66-8.81; p < 0.001 ) . We found that a pro - inflammatory diet is associated with increased risk of RA. Higher volume studies are needed to confirm the results.

Abstract:Objectives: We performed a meta-analysis to assess the association and possible dose-response relationship between dietary inflammation index (DII)™ and colorectal cancer (CRC). Methods: A literature search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database for all relevant studies. The pooled relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by random effects model. Results: A total of eight studies were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled RRs of CRC, colon and rectal cancer for the highest versus lowest DII categories were 1.43 (95% CI 1.25-1.63), 1.37 (95% CI 1.16-1.62) and 1.44 (95% CI 1.23-1.69), respectively. A significant positive association was observed both in cohort studies (RR = 1.26, 95% CI 1.14-1.38) and case-control studies (RR = 1.81, 95% CI 1.48-2.22). Nonlinear associations between DII scores and the risk of CRC, colon and rectal cancer were found in the dose-response analyses, the results showed that the risks of CRC, colon and rectal cancer increased slowly when the DII score was above 1.30, 2.21, and 1.30, respectively. Conclusion: Higher DII scores might increase CRC risk. Thus, people should adopt more anti-inflammatory diets such as those high in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, herbs, and spices.

Abstract:Background Despite the beneficial effects of a plant-based diet on colorectal cancer (CRC), no study has yet investigated the relationship between a Planetary Health Diet Index (PHDI) and CRC in the Iranian population. Therefore, the present case-control study aimed to assess the relationship between this index and CRC. Methods The current research was conducted on 71 patients with CRC (case group) and 142 (control group) admitted to hospitals in Tehran, Iran. The PHDI (0-150 points) was calculated based on a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Conditional logistic regression was applied to evaluate the association between CRC and PHDI and its sub-scores. Results After adjusting for the role of potential confounders, lower odds of CRC were observed in the second tertile of the total ratio score (odds ratio (OR) = 0.334; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.127–0.878, P = 0.026) and the last tertile of PHDI (OR = 0.407; 95% CI: 0.183–0.907, P = 0.028), total adequacy score (OR = 0.261; 95% CI: 0.110–0.622, P = 0.002), and total moderation score (OR = 0.380; 95% CI: 0.162–0.891, P = 0.026) in comparison to the first tertile of each index. Conclusions The current study's findings indicated a reverse relationship between PHDI, total adequacy, moderation, and ratio scores with the CRC odds. However, it is suggested that more research be performed in this field in the future to confirm the results of this study.

Diet and Genetic Risk Factors of Colorectal Cancer in Palestine: A Case-Control Study

Abstract:To add evidence to the limited data available on colorectal cancer (CRC) from Palestine, we examine the risk factors associated with CRC using a matched hospital-based case-control study. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 105 cases and 105 controls. A multivariable conditional regression model was used to adjust for the association between study factors and CRC risk. In the model, compared with controls, cases from villages were significantly less likely to have CRC (Adjusted Odds Ratio, AOR = 0.194); taking aspirin lowered the likelihood of CRC by 24%; and having a multiple birth sibling by 33%. Also, the likelihood of CRC was lowered significantly by consuming five servings of fruits/vegetables per week or more (5-6 servings: AOR = 0.21, 7-8 servings per week: AOR = 0.04). However, cases had a significantly higher likelihood of CRC if they consumed 2-4 servings of grilled red meat per week (AOR = 4.25); smoked (AOR = 4.38); had a sedentary lifestyle (AOR = 2.53); reported parental consanguinity (AOR = 3.88); or had a family history of cancer (AOR = 6.39). Our results confirmed the association between CRC and red meat intake and smoking, and proved that parental consanguinity and family history of cancer are also risk factors for CRC.

Abstract:<span>We aimed to perform an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SRMAs) of observational studies of the association of the dietary inflammatory index (DII) with the risk of non-communicable chronic disease and mortality in the general population. We searched PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science to November 2020. For each outcome, the summary effect sizes with the corresponding 95%CIs were recalculated using a random-effects model. The certainty of the evidence and the quality of conduct of published SRMAs were rated using the GRADE and ASMTAR 2 tools, respectively. A total of 11 SRMAs of observational studies, reporting pooled effect sizes for 29 outcomes obtain from 60 prospective cohort and 67 case-control studies, were included. Our results demonstrated evidence of moderate certainty for a positive relation between DII and the risk cardiovascular disease, all-cause mortality, and colorectal cancer. Higher DII was also associated with site-specific cancer risk, but for cancers at most sites, existing evidence is derived from case-control studies with the certainty of evidence being rated low or very low. Our findings suggested that adherence to a diet with high inflammatory features might be associated with a higher risk of colorectal cancer, cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality.</span>

Results: A significant association was found between DII and MetS (OR trend : 1.08, 95% CI: 1.01– 1.15, P =0.017), triglyceride (TG) (OR trend : 1.06, 95% CI: 1.00– 1.12, P=0.030), fasting blood glucose (FBG) (OR trend : 1.10, 95% CI: 1.01– 1.20, P=0.018) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (OR trend : 1.07, 95% CI: 1.02– 1.12, P= 0.005) after adjustment for all covariates. Also, there was a significant relationship between DII score and waist circumference (WC) (OR trend : 1.07, 95% CI: 1.01– 1.14, P=0.016). Conclusion: Higher DII score (a pro-inflammatory diet) had a significant association with the risk of MetS and its components, even after adjustment for different potential confounding factors including socio-demographic data and lifestyle habits. However, further longitudinal investigations with more dietary parameters are needed to elucidate the role of the pro-inflammatory diet in the etiology of MetS. Abstract:Dietary factors might contribute to the risk of lung cancer by increasing the concentration of inflammatory markers. The literature-derived Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) has been established to evaluate the inflammatory potential of diet correlated with inflammatory markers. The association between DII scores and the risk of lung cancer has been conflicting. So, in the current study, we aimed to assess the effect of pro-inflammatory dietary patterns measured with DII and the risk of lung cancer.

Abstract:Introduction: Limited data are available on the association of Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components. The present study was conducted to investigate the association of DII with MetS and its components among Iranian adults. Methods: A total of 404 subjects, aged 18 years or older, were included in the current cross-sectional study. We used a validated and reliable 147-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to assess dietary intakes. Fasting blood sample was obtained to quantify glycemic indicators and lipid profile. MetS was defined based on the guidelines of the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III). Results: Mean age of study participants was 38.20 ± 9.55 years. No significant association was found between DII and odds of MetS (odds ratio [OR]: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.48-1.76). In terms of MetS components, a significant positive association was seen between DII scores and reduced levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (OR: 2.29, 95% CI: 1.32-3.97); such that after controlling for energy intake, demographic variables and BMI, participants in the highest category of DII had 2.71 times greater odds for having reduced levels of HDL-C (OR: 2.71, 95% CIs: 1.34, 5.47). There was no other significant association between other components of MetS and DII scores either before or after adjusting for confounding variables. Conclusion: We observed no significant association between DII and odds of MetS. However, higher score of DII was associated with lower levels of HDL.

Abstract:Background: The inflammatory potential of diet may affect carcinogenesis. This study aimed to determine the association between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and the risk of head and neck cancer (HNC), as well as the interaction between DII and cigarette smoking in HNC development within the Iranian population. Study Design: This is a case-control study. Methods: In this multicenter case-control study, participants' dietary intake was assessed using a validated 130-item food frequency questionnaire, from which DII was computed. The study recruited 876 new cases from referral hospitals across 10 provinces and 3409 healthy controls who were frequency-matched based on age, gender, and residential place. Logistic regression was used to obtain odds ratios (ORs) for HNC across tertiles of DII, which were adjusted for confounding variables. Results: A higher pro-inflammatory diet was associated with an increased risk of all HNC (OR T3 vs. T1 [95% CI]: 1.31 [1.06, 1.62]; P-trend=0.013). There was a significant association between lip and oral cavity cancers and DII (OR T3 vs. T1 [95% CI]: 1.56 [1.16, 1.66]; P-trend=0.004). Furthermore, an inflammatory diet was associated with an increased risk of pharynx cancer (OR T3 vs. T1 [95% CI]: 2.08 [1.14, 3.79]; P-trend=0.02). Additionally, no significant association was observed between DII and larynx cancer, while an interaction was found between DII and tobacco use on the risk of HNC (OR T3 vs. T1 [95% CI]: 2.52 [1.78, 3.57]; P-interaction=0.03). Conclusion: DII was positively associated with HNC risk. There was a significant association between DII and the risk of lip, oral cavity, and pharynx cancers. Additionally, there was an interaction between tobacco use and DII in determining the risk of HNC.
