Abstract:A visual workload model was constructed to determine and evaluate drivers' visual workload characteristics in high-density interchange-merging areas. Five interchanges were selected, and a real-vehicle driving test was conducted with 47 participants. To address the differences in drivers' visual characteristics in the interchange cluster merging areas, the Criteria Importance Through Intercriteria Correlation (CRITIC) objective weighting method was employed. Six visual parameters were selected to establish a comprehensive evaluation model for the visual workload in high-density interchange-merging areas. The results show that the average scanning frequency and average pupil area change rate are most strongly correlated with the visual workload, whereas the average duration of a single gaze has the lowest weight in the visual workload assessment system. Different driver visual workloads were observed depending on the environment of the interchange-merging areas, and based on these, recommendations are proposed to decrease drivers' workload, thereby increasing road safety.

Understanding Driver Response Patterns to Mental Workload Increase in Typical Driving Scenarios.

Abstract:As vehicles become more complex and traffic increases, the associated mental workload of driving should increase, potentially compromising driving safety. As mental workload increases (as measured by the detection response time task), does how people drive (as assessed by driving performance and eye fixations) change? How does driving experience impact on such response patterns? To address those questions, data were collected in a motion-based driving simulator. Two driving scenarios were examined, a stop-controlled intersection (high workload-16 participants, 320 trials) and speed-limited highway (low workload-11 participants, 264 trials). In each scenario, in half of the trials, the participants were required to complete or not to complete a distracting secondary task. Hierarchical cluster analysis was used to identify driver response patterns. For highway driving, they are: (1) increased eye fixation variability and unchanged driving performance and (2) unchanged fixation variability and increased mean speed. For intersection driving, they are: (1) increased; (2) decreased fixation variability both with decreased speed (mean and variance); and (3) increased fixation variability with increased speed. Eye fixation variability was more strongly associated with increased mental workload than other driving performance statistics. Furthermore, in contrast to prior research, changes in driving performance and eye fixations were not necessarily correlated with each other as mental workload increased. Novice drivers exhibit higher gaze variability, and they are more prone to maintain vehicle control than experienced drivers.

As a result, multi-board guide signs have been increasingly set up on expressways. The main aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the directional road sign displayed on multi and single-board signs on driver mental workload and behavior. 32 participants including 16 females (mean age = 24.7 years, standard deviation = 1.9 years) participated in the experiment and completed 3 driving simulation scenes. The setting of each scene-sign board was different: 1 board, 2 boards, and 3 boards. The driver needed to reach the designated destination according to the guidance of the road signs. Eye tracker was used to measure the fixation, saccade and electroencephalogram (EEG) was used to measure the alpha (8-13 hz) band absolute power in different signage scenarios. There are two major findings of the study. First, when the number of place names is less than or equal to 7, the multi-board sign generates more mental workload than the single-board sign does. The alpha band power of the driver's frontal area under the multiple boards is lower and affects driving performance (the deceleration is greater). Second, when the number of place names is more than 7, there is no significant difference in the effect on mental workload whether multi or single-board sign is used. However, compared to the single-board sign, drivers in the case of multi-board sign are likely to reduce the fixation duration and increase the number of saccades. The results suggest that it is not necessary to use multi-board signs when the number of place names is less than 7. These findings provide more safety considerations for the setting of multi-board guide signs in the future.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The effects of traffic sign information volume (TSIV) on the visual characteristics and workload of novice and experienced drivers were investigated in this study. TSIV plays a crucial role in road traffic safety, and understanding its impact on drivers is essential for designing effective traffic sign systems. OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to compare the visual characteristics and workload of novice and experienced drivers under varying TSIV doses through simulated driving tests. The objective was to provide insights for optimizing the design of road TSIV. METHODS: Six TSIV levels were considered: S0, S1, S2, S3, S4, and S5, representing different workload levels. Participants, including both novice and experienced drivers, were involved in simulated driving scenarios with varying TSIV levels. Eye movement data was collected using an eye tracker device. The study was conducted in China, and appropriate driving simulators and equipment were utilized. RESULTS: The findings revealed several valuable results. Experienced drivers exhibited a higher proportion of saccade behavior in the 30–90 ms time period and did not show rapid saccade behavior during the 0–30 ms period, indicating superior visual search strategies. Both novice and experienced drivers demonstrated improved visual cognitive abilities at the S3 level of TSIV, which corresponds to normal and safe driving conditions. Furthermore, a majority of both groups had saccade amplitudes in the range of 0°–4°, with experienced drivers showing a slightly higher proportion. About 82% of experienced drivers had saccade behavior within the range of 0°–2°, compared to 75% of novice drivers. CONCLUSIONS: The study concludes that the S3 level of TSIV, corresponding to 30 bits/km, is optimal for both novice and experienced drivers. This level promotes better visual performance and reduces visual workload, indicating that drivers’ information acquisition capacity and visual search strategies are maximized while keeping the workload associated with driving at a minimum. These findings have significant implications for enhancing driving safety.

Abstract:Based on the platform on driving simulation,through selecting highway and urban road as experimental environment,the index of mental workload and driving behaviors of drivers have been monitored through the whole process.Each experiment lasts about 15 minutes.In the experiments HRV is used as assessment index of mental workload,while the use of rearview mirror,steering lamp and vehicle speed are used as indices on driver behavior.The experimental results show that compared with normal driving,when cell phone is used in driving,the phenomenon appeared-the driver's LFNU and HFNU decrease,and LF/HF increases obviously and TP increases,too.Excluding the effects of driving fatigue,it can be preliminarily concluded that the phenomenon is caused by increment of mental workload by using of cell phone.Under the situation of limited cognitive resource,the increment of mental workload causes the different degree decrease of abilities about information acquisition,use of steering lamp,gear position operation and speed control.In a word,using cell phone in driving can cause the increase of mental workload,and can produce negative effect on driving behaviors and generate potential safety hazard.Therefore,the departments concerned should make legal limits on using cell phone in driving to reduce risks of traffic accidents.

Abstract:Tunnel-interchange sections are characterized by complex driving tasks and frequent traffic conflicts, posing substantial challenges to overall safety and efficiency. Enhancing safety in these areas is crucial for the sustainability of traffic systems. This study applies behavior adaptation theory as an integrated framework to examine the impact of environmental stimuli on driving behavior and conflict risk in small-spaced sections. Through driving simulation, 19 observation indicators are collected, covering eye-tracking, heart rate, subjective workload, driving performance, and conflict risk. The analysis, using single-factor ranking (Shapley Additive Explanation), interaction effects (dependence plots), and multi-factor analysis (Structural Equation Modeling), demonstrates that driving workload and performance dominate the fully mediating effects between external factors and conflict risk. High-load environmental stimuli, such as narrow spacing (≤500 m) and overloaded signage information (>6 units), significantly elevate drivers' stress responses and impair visual acuity, thereby increasing task difficulty and conflict risk. Critical factors like saccade size, heart rate variability, lane deviation, and headway distance emerge as vital indicators for monitoring and supporting driving decisions. These findings provide valuable insights for the operational management of small-spacing sections and enhance the understanding of driving safety in these areas from a human factor perspective.

Abstract:Understanding driver behaviors in varied traffic scenarios is critical to the design of safe and efficient roadways and traffic control device. This research presents an analysis of driver cognitive workload, situation awareness (SA) and performance for three different scenarios, including a standard intersection and contraflow grade-separated intersections (C-GSI) and quadrant GSI (Q-GSI) with lane assignment sign manipulations. The study used a simulator-based driving experiment with application of the NASA Task Load Index and Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique to assess the influence of the scenarios on driver behavioral responses. The findings reveal challenges for drivers navigating the C-GSI, characterized by diminished SA and elevated workload. These states were associated with behaviors such as delayed lane changes, missed opportunities for appropriate lane changes, heightened acceleration behavior within deceleration segments, and frequent speeding. In contrast, while drivers in the Q-GSI scenario faced elevated workloads, their SA remained steady, largely due to lane-specific signs facilitating early lane changes. Although the Q-GSI led to increased speed variability and slight increases in deceleration, the use of supplementary speed signage revealed a promising alternative to the S-intersection. Correlation analysis highlighted a significant relationship between mental workload and acceleration responses, indicating that increased acceleration was associated with higher mental workload. In addition, a significant negative correlation between driver perceived performance and absolute lane deviations indicated that drivers with higher self-assessed performance were more accurate in lane-keeping. The study underscores the need for GSIs and signage designs that support driver SA, manage cognitive workload to improve driver performance and increase road safety.

Abstract:Assessing drivers' mental workload is crucial for reducing road accidents. This study examined drivers' mental workload in a simulated auditory-based dual-task driving scenario, with driving tasks as the main task, and auditory-based N-back tasks as the secondary task. A total of three levels of mental workload (i.e., low, medium, high) were manipulated by varying the difficulty levels of the secondary task (i.e., no presence of secondary task, 1-back, 2-back). Multimodal measures, including a set of subjective measures, physiological measures, and behavioral performance measures, were collected during the experiment. The results showed that an increase in task difficulty led to increased subjective ratings of mental workload and a decrease in task performance for the secondary N-back tasks. Significant differences were observed across the different levels of mental workload in multimodal physiological measures, such as delta waves in EEG signals, fixation distance in eye movement signals, time- and frequency-domain measures in ECG signals, and skin conductance in EDA signals. In addition, four driving performance measures related to vehicle velocity and the deviation of pedal input and vehicle position also showed sensitivity to the changes in drivers' mental workload. The findings from this study can contribute to a comprehensive understanding of effective measures for mental workload assessment in driving scenarios and to the development of smart driving systems for the accurate recognition of drivers' mental states.

Abstract:With the rapid development of advanced mobile intelligent terminals, driving tasks are diverse, and new traffic safety problems occur. We propose a new research on physiological characteristics and nonparametric tests for the master-slave driving task, especially for evaluation of drivers’ mental workload in mountain area highway in nighttime scenario. First, we establish the experimental platform based driving simulator and design the master-slave driving task. Second, based on the physiological data and subjective evaluation for mental workload, we use statistical methods to composite the physical changes evolution analysis in a driving simulator. Finally, we finished nonparametric test of the drivers’ psychological load and road test. The results show that in compassion with the daytime scenario, drivers should pay much effort to driving skills and risk identification in the nighttime scenario. Thus, in the same driving condition, drivers should bear the higher level of mental workload, and it has been subjected to even greater pressures and intensity of emotions.

Abstract:Head-up displays (HUDs) enable drivers to receive additional information while maintaining a forward view of the road. However, due to human cognitive resource limitations, improper HUD interface design can pose safety risks, especially when multiple pieces of information are presented simultaneously. This study involved 45 participants and conducted two driving simulation experiments. Study 1 explored the impact of different HUD interface positions on driver cognitive performance in single cognitive task conditions. Study 2 validated the findings of Study 1 under multiple cognitive task conditions and further compared drivers' cognitive performance, workload, driving operation, and eye movement between grouped and disordered information layouts on the HUD. The results indicated that the central area of the HUD interface provided the best cognitive performance, followed by the left side, with the right side performing the poorest. Grouped information layouts on the HUD proved superior to disordered layouts in terms of cognitive performance, workload, driving operation, and eye movement. An XGBoost regression model was proposed to predict the drivers' comprehensive cognitive responses. This study could provide empirical evidence and practical recommendations for HUD interface design.

Development and Validation of Highway Emergency Lane Illegal Occupancy Scale for Chinese Drivers

Abstract:Illegal behavior such as casually parking or traveling in the highway emergency lane have negative effects on public traffic safety. The Highway Emergency Lane Illegal Occupancy Scale was developed for Chinese drivers, and psychometric properties and influencing factors were assessed. Three hundred drivers submitted questionnaires; after incomplete questionnaires were excluded, 239 complete questionnaires remained for study. Exploratory factor analysis was used to determine the factor structure, which showed that all factors were internally reliable. Demographic variables were found to have significant negative correlations with occupancy behaviors. Additional analysis indicated that drivers between 41 and 55 years old or with more than 10 years of driving experience had significantly fewer total points than drivers in other age groups, indicating that they were less inclined to occupy the highway emergency lane. Drivers with a postgraduate education or higher were especially aware of the traffic rules to be obeyed to ensure safety. A significant positive correlation was found between traffic violation variables and occupancy behaviors. The average score of legal consciousness was highest among all factors, indicating that Chinese drivers lack an understanding of traffic laws and regulations. Insufficient institutions, indifferent management, and poor education compound this illegal occupancy phenomenon in the highway emergency lane.
Driving Confidence in a Connected Vehicle Environment: A Case Study of Expressway Work Zone

Abstract:At present, how the application of connected vehicle technology will affect drivers’ driving psychology needs to be explored. As an important part of driving psychology, driving confidence can guide drivers to operate calmly when facing a complex traffic environment, which has an important impact on reducing accident rates and improving traffic efficiency. Based on the driving behavior data in the expressway work zone under a connected vehicle environment, this study mainly analyzed the difference between the psychological characteristics of drivers with warning information or without warning information when facing the work zone ahead. Firstly, based on driving simulation technology, the expressway work zone scene in a connected vehicle environment was designed, and the on-board human-machine interface was used to provide warning information of the work zone ahead. Secondly, the difference of drivers’ driving confidence in psychology when driving with or without warning information was analyzed by using the characteristics of average vehicle spatiotemporal diagram and gas pedal angle. Finally, a method of quantifying driving confidence was proposed, which used a kind of objective weighting method to get the weights between different indicators. Based on this method, drivers’ degree of driving confidence under two conditions was calculated. The results showed that connected vehicle technology could affect drivers’ driving confidence in psychology when facing the work zone ahead. In the connected vehicle environment, 82.9% of drivers’ degree of driving confidence would increase, and the average degree of driving confidence with warning information was 10.9% higher than that without warning information.

Abstract:The driver’s attentional state is a significant human factor in traffic safety. The executive control process is a crucial sub-function of attention. To explore the relationship between the driver’s driving performance and executive control function, a total of 35 healthy subjects were invited to take part in a simulated driving experiment and a task-cuing experiment. The subjects were divided into three groups according to their driving performance (aberrant driving behaviors, including lapses and errors) by the clustering method. Then the performance efficiency and electroencephalogram (EEG) data acquired in the task-cuing experiment were compared among the three groups. The effect of group, task transition types and cue-stimulus intervals (CSIs) were statistically analyzed by using the repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the post hoc simple effect analysis. The subjects with lower driving error rates had better executive control efficiency as indicated by the reaction time (RT) and error rate in the task-cuing experiment, which was related with their better capability to allocate the available attentional resources, to express the external stimuli and to process the information in the nervous system, especially the fronto-parietal network. The activation degree of the frontal area fluctuated, and of the parietal area gradually increased along with the increase of CSI, which implied the role of the frontal area in task setting reconstruction and working memory maintaining, and of the parietal area in stimulus–Response (S–R) mapping expression. This research presented evidence of the close relationship between executive control functions and driving performance.

Abstract:Fatigue is one of the crucial factors in human error-related traffic accidents. Despite the development of highly advanced intelligent transport systems, fatigue-related traffic accidents have not decreased. The factors inducing driver fatigue are classified into mental and physical categories. Physical fatigue results from muscle strain due to prolonged driving and operations. Mental fatigue, on the other hand, results from the continuous mental effort required for driving, including repeated perception and decision-making regarding driving situations and route planning. Monitoring driver fatigue can help prevent fatigue-related traffic accidents. Therefore, researchers have studied its relationship with various biomarkers such as sleep state, eye movement, facial expression, and electroencephalography (EEG) activation levels. Moreover, studies have revealed the relationship between fatigue and cognitive performance, which is affected by factors such as extended periods of driving. Furthermore, the strategy, quantity, and quality of driving operations and perception differ in various traffic environments. For instance, driving stress levels vary depending on factors such as the number of vehicles on the road, traffic congestion, and road conditions. However, the brain activity associated with mental and physical workload due to the traffic environment and its factors remains unknown. In particular, the relationship between mental and physical stress resulting from varying levels of operation and perception in different driving environments, the accumulation of driver fatigue caused by such stress, and the related brain activity are still unclear. In this study, we focused on investigating the mental and physical workload that accumulates in drivers and induces physical and mental fatigue, as well as the related brain activity caused by different traffic environments. We investigate these aspects through driving experiments, measuring EEG in driving environments created by varying the traffic environment and density using a driving simulator. The results confirmed differences in theta- and alpha-band spectral responses, which are associated with driver fatigue, across different traffic environments. Further examination of the causal relationship showed that mental and physical workload were associated with fatigue-related spectral responses depending on the traffic environment. These findings imply that the level of cognitive and operational load inherent in driving environments plays a crucial role in driver fatigue.

Abstract:This study aims to evaluate the impact of different visual attraction environments at the entrance zone of freeway tunnels on drivers' visual performance and subjective mental workload. Through a naturalistic driving experiment conducted on actual roads, participants experienced various visual attraction environments at the entrance zones of freeway tunnels. The selected visual environments included baseline, landscape-style architecture, tip slogan, and billboard scenarios. Objective visual performance was assessed using eye-tracking devices to collect participants' eye movement data, while subjective mental workload was evaluated through the NASA-TLX measurement reports administered after the driving experiment. The results indicate that the visual attraction environments at the entrance zone of freeway tunnels have significant impacts on drivers' visual attention level, cognitive workload, and subjective mental workload. Under the billboard condition, participants exhibited the longest first fixation duration (FFD) and paid the earliest attention to visual attraction (reflected by participants positioned their initial fixation at the visual attraction farthest from the tunnel entrance zone (DFT)). Additionally, the tip slogan condition resulted in the highest mean fixation duration (MFD), the largest percentage of total fixation duration on the visual attraction (PTFD), and the highest cognitive workload (reflected in maximum pupil diameter (PD)). Billboard at the entrance zone of freeway tunnel had the greatest effect on attracting drivers' visual attention, while tip slogan resulted in the highest cognitive workload on drivers. The results of the subjective mental workload evaluation (NASA-TLX) also indicated that tip slogan had the greatest impact on drivers' subjective mental workload. This study provides valuable insights into the potential impact of different visual attraction environments at the entrance zone of freeway tunnels on drivers' eye-catching effect. The results contribute to both theoretical knowledge and practical applications in the field of transportation safety.

First Identification of a Chemotactic Receptor in an Invertebrate Species: Structural and Functional Characterization of Ciona intestinalis C3a Receptor

Abstract:In mammals, the bioactive fragment C3a, released from C3 during complement activation, is a potent mediator of inflammatory reactions and exerts its functional activity through the specific binding to cell surface G protein-coupled seven-transmembrane receptors. Recently, we demonstrated a Ciona intestinalis C3a (CiC3a)-mediated chemotaxis of hemocytes in the deuterostome invertebrate Ciona intestinalis and suggested an important role for this molecule in inflammatory processes. In the present work, we have cloned and characterized the receptor molecule involved in the CiC3a-mediated chemotaxis and studied its expression profile. The sequence, encoding a 95,394 Da seven-transmembrane domain protein, shows the highest sequence homology with mammalian C3aRs. Northern blot analysis revealed that the CiC3aR is expressed abundantly in the heart and neural complex and to a lesser extent in the ovaries, hemocytes, and larvae. Three polyclonal Abs raised in rabbits against peptides corresponding to CiC3aR regions of the first and second extracellular loop and of the third intracellular loop react specifically in Western blotting with a single band of 98–102 kDa in hemocyte protein extracts. Immunostaining performed on circulating hemocytes with the three specific Abs revealed that CiC3aR is constitutively expressed only in hyaline and granular amoebocytes. In chemotaxis experiments, the Abs against the first and second extracellular loop inhibited directional migration of hemocytes toward the synthetic peptide reproducing the CiC3a C-terminal sequence, thus providing the compelling evidence that C. intestinalis expresses a functional C3aR homologous to the mammalian receptor. These findings further elucidate the evolutionary origin of the vertebrate complement-mediated proinflammatory process.
Exploring the associations of demographics and scale measures with cognitive driving behavior among older drivers in China

Abstract:Age-related changes and frailty are reasons for the high proportion of older drivers in certain types of crashes, such as giving right of way at intersections and turning left. The identified crash causes include the driver's demographics, driving style, cognitive function, and mental workload. This study aimed to explore the associations of demographics and scale measures with cognitive driving behavior. Thirty-nine drivers, consisting of twenty younger drivers (18–60 years old) and nineteen older drivers (above 60 years old), participated in driving simulation experiments after completing scale tests. The selected scale measures included the demographic questionnaire, Multidimensional Driving Style Inventory (MDSI-C), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Trail Making Test Part A (TMT-A) and Part B (TMT-B), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) for obtaining subjective information from drivers. Driving scenarios were developed based on the driving characteristics of older adults to investigate age-related driving ability. The driving behavior parameters included reaction time, lateral stability, and driving speed, corresponding to reaction, perception, and execution. Three stepwise regression models showed that NASA-TLX, the interaction between age and driving experience, and the interaction between age and TMT-A significantly explained 53.3 % of reaction time variance; TMT-A, risk driving style, anxiety driving style, and gender significantly explained 53.5 % of lateral stability variance; TMT-A, NASA-TLX, and MMSE significantly explained 60.6 % of driving speed variance. Subsequently, the impact of four age-related predictor variables on driving behavior was further discussed. It is worth noting that a rich driving experience may compensate for driving performance. However cognitive impairment impairs this compensation. Driving behavior is influenced by a combination of various factors. Age, as a physiological indicator, is not sufficient to be a strong predictive factor for lateral stability and driving speed. The results provide a reference for traffic safety management departments to streamline driving suitability test procedures and propose targeted training methods for older drivers.

Abstract:Covering: 2000 to 2016The labor-intensive process of microbial natural product discovery is contingent upon identifying discrete secondary metabolites of interest within complex biological extracts, which contain inventories of all extractable small molecules produced by an organism or consortium. Historically, compound isolation prioritization has been driven by observed biological activity and/or relative metabolite abundance and followed by dereplication via accurate mass analysis. Decades of discovery using variants of these methods has generated the natural pharmacopeia but also contributes to recent high rediscovery rates. However, genomic sequencing reveals substantial untapped potential in previously mined organisms, and can provide useful prescience of potentially new secondary metabolites that ultimately enables isolation. Recently, advances in comparative metabolomics analyses have been coupled to secondary metabolic predictions to accelerate bioactivity and abundance-independent discovery work flows. In this review we will discuss the various analytical and computational techniques that enable MS-based metabolomic applications to natural product discovery and discuss the future prospects for comparative metabolomics in natural product discovery.
Effect of High-Altitude Environment on Driving Safety: A Study on Drivers’ Mental Workload, Situation Awareness, and Driving Behaviour

Abstract:This study aims to analyze the effect of high-altitude environment on drivers’ mental workload (MW), situation awareness (SA), and driving behaviour (DB), and to explore the relationship among those driving performances. Based on a survey, the data of 356 lowlanders engaging in driving activities at Tibetan Plateau (high-altitude group) and 341 lowlanders engaging in driving activities at low altitudes (low-altitude group) were compared and analyzed. The results suggest that the differences between the two groups are noteworthy. Mental workload of high-altitude group is significantly higher than that of low-altitude group, and their situation awareness is lower significantly. The possibility of risky driving behaviours for high-altitude group, especially aggressive violations, is higher. For the high-altitude group, the increase of mental workload can lead to an increase on aggressive violations, and the situation understanding plays a full mediating effect between mental workload and aggressive violations. Measures aiming at the improvement of situation awareness and the reduction of mental workload can effectively reduce the driving risk from high-altitude environment for lowlanders.
