Abstract:Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are the standard of care for postmenopausal women with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. Here, we performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the occurrence of menopausal symptoms in breast cancer patients receiving the AI therapy. Patients treated with AIs had an increased risk of allgrade arthralgia (1.63 [95% CI: 1.34-1.98]) and insomnia (1.24 [95% CI: 1.14-1.34]). The overall incidence of hot flashes, fatigue, arthralgia, sweating, and insomnia in patients receiving AIs was 30.47% (95% CI: 25.51%-35.93%), 17.16% (95% CI: 14%-20.85%), 17.91% (95% CI: 11.29%-27.22%), 14.64% (95% CI: 11.46%-18.52%), and 16.52% (95% CI: 12.45%-21.6 %), respectively. Both arthralgia (RR = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.16-0.75) and sweating (RR = 11.02, 95% CI: 4.11-29.57) differed between patients with early- and advanced-stage breast cancer. Our findings indicates that AIs are associated with a significant risk of developing arthralgia and insomnia in breast cancer patients. Effective early detection and management of menopausal symptoms would likely lead to safer use of AIs in breast cancer patients.
Aromatase Inhibitors and Risk of Cardiovascular Events in Breast Cancer Patients: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Background Cardiovascular events (CVEs) was considered as one of the primary cause to reduce the quality of life in breast cancer patients with aromatase inhibitors (AIs) treatment, which has not been sufficiently addressed. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between risk of CVEs and AIs in patients with breast cancer. Methods Included studies were obtained from the databases of Embase, Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Clinical Trials.gov, and reference lists. The main outcome measures were overall incidence, odds ratios (ORs), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Furthermore, the association and the risk differences among different tumor types, AIs,ages,or treatment regimens were conducted. Fixed-effect or random-effect models were applied in the statistical analyses according to the heterogeneity. Our analysis was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Results Seventeen studies, which included 44,411 subjects, were included in our analyses. The overall incidence of CVEs in AIs group was 13.02% (95% CI: 8.15–20.17%) and almost all of the high-grade CVEs occurred in patients treated with AIs. The pooled ORs of CVEs was 0.9940 (95% CI: 0.8545–1.1562). Under sub-group analysis, the incidence of CVEs related to exemestane was higher than that of controls (OR = 1.1564, 95% CI: 1.0656–1.2549), but no statistical differences in risk of CVEs were found in other sub-group analysis. No evidence of publication bias was found for incidence of CVEs in our meta-analysis by a funnel plot. Conclusions These results suggest that patients with breast cancer treated with AIs do not have a significant risk of developing CVEs in comparison with the controls, and exemestane might not be considered as the alternative AI to the breast cancer patients from the perspective of CVEs. Further studies are recommended to investigate this association and the risk differences among different tumor types, AIs or treatment regimens.

Abstract:Abstract Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) have shown great success as adjuvant therapy for post-menopausal women with hormone receptor–positive breast cancers. AI-induced arthralgia (AIA) is a frequent AI toxicity contributing to non-adherence and discontinuation. This review aims to understand current knowledge of AIA. The mean incidence of AIA was 39.1% and the mean discontinuation of AI therapy due to AIA was 9.3%. Most of the AIAs were non-inflammatory. A shorter time since the last menstrual period and pre-existing joint pain were risk factors. Vitamin D3 supplementation may be a preventative measure and treatment with duloxetine, acupuncture and/or exercise is supported by large randomized controlled trials. There was consistent improvement in AIAs with switching to an alternate AI, and this could additionally allow continuation of cancer treatment with AI. Further research is needed to identify predictive biomarkers, better characterize AIA subcategories and study more reliable therapeutic options.

Abstract:Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) have radically changed the prognosis of hormone receptor positive breast cancer (BC) in post-menopausal women, and are a mainstay of the adjuvant therapy for BC after surgery in place of, or following, Tamoxifen. However, AIs aren't side effect-free; frequent adverse events involve the musculoskeletal system, in the form of bone loss, AI-associated arthralgia (AIA) syndrome and autoimmune rheumatic diseases. In this narrative review, we reported the main clinical features of these three detrimental conditions, their influence on therapy adherence, the possible underlying molecular mechanisms and the available pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. The best-known form is the AIs-induced osteoporosis, whose molecular pathway and therapeutic possibilities were extensively investigated in the last decade. AIA syndrome is a high prevalent joint pain disorder which often determines a premature discontinuation of the therapy. Several points still need to be clarified, as a universally accepted diagnostic definition, the pathogenetic mechanisms and satisfactory management strategies. The association of AIs therapy with autoimmune diseases is of the utmost interest. The related literature has been recently expanded, but many issues remain to be explored, the first being the molecular mechanisms.

Abstract:Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are a cornerstone adjuvant treatment of many hormone receptor-positive breast cancers, and nearly half of women taking aromatase inhibitors suffer from AI-induced arthralgia (AIA), also known as AI-associated musculoskeletal syndrome (AIMSS), for which there are limited evidence-based treatments. Pharmacologic management and complementary methods including supplements, exercise, physical therapy, yoga, acupuncture, and massage have all shown mixed results. Comprehensive diet and lifestyle strategies are understudied in AIA/AIMSS despite their disease-modifying effects across many chronic conditions. Here we report a case of a woman with stage 2 estrogen and progesterone receptor-positive invasive ductal carcinoma on adjuvant anastrozole whose AI-induced arthralgia was durably controlled through a Mediterranean plant-forward diet and daily physical activity guided by continuous glucose monitoring. We posit that diet and a lifestyle inclusive of daily physical activity constitute a low-cost, low-risk, and potentially high-reward strategy for controlling common AI-induced musculoskeletal symptoms and that more investigation in this arena, including well-designed randomized trials, is warranted.

Abstract:Aromatase inhibitors are prescribed in breast cancer due to their associated lower rate of cancer recurrence compared to tamoxifen. However, aromatase inhibitor‐induced arthralgia (AIIA) is one of the leading causes of treatment nonadherence, increasing the risk of cancer recurrence. The pathophysiology of AIIA is poorly understood, and although current recommendations for AIIA include lifestyle changes and analgesics depending on the severity of symptoms, there is no established effective treatment. The aim of this study is to explore the presentation and mechanism of AIIA and investigate the feasibility and efficacy of different exercise interventions (aerobic, resistance, aerobic and resistance combined, and yoga or tai chi) in patients with AIIA to guide the development of formal exercise prescription guidelines. Findings indicate that a mixed‐modality regimen of aerobic and resistance exercises is feasible and safe and may serve the most benefit in improving joint pain, functionality, and quality of life. More specifically, the weekly regimen should consist of 150 min of aerobic exercise with two sessions of at least six resistance exercises, 8 to 12 repetitions, three sets each. Supplementary yoga and tai chi may be recommended twice a week depending on a patient's target symptoms. Yoga was associated with improved physical functionality, whereas tai chi was related to improvements in mental health. However, the feasibility and impact of combined aerobic and resistance exercise protocols with yoga or tai chi in our target population were not investigated in this review. The use of large, randomized controlled trials is recommended for future studies.

Abstract:Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) decrease the production of oestrogen, decreasing stimulation of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. Theoretically, AIs may be less effective in obese women, due to the greater quantity of aromatase in peripheral fatty tissue. We performed a systematic review to assess the effect of obesity on AI efficacy in breast cancer treatment. The review followed PRISMA guidelines. Studies included were interventional or observational studies with comparison groups, of postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer on treatment with an AI, alone or in combination with other drugs, in which body mass index or another measure of obesity was recorded. Studies in all languages were included; if published as an abstract only, authors were contacted for further information. Outcome measures included overall survival, disease-free survival or time to progressive disease, survival from the start of therapy, mortality measures, local or distant recurrence of primary cancer and time to recurrence. Of 2,344 citations identified from five databases, eight studies met the criteria for inclusion; three randomised controlled trials and five retrospective cohort studies. Due to variability in study factors, it was not possible to perform a quantitative meta-analysis. However, the systematic review showed a trend towards a negative effect of obesity on AI efficacy. There is evidence of a negative effect of obesity on AI efficacy in postmenopausal hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, but the size of the effect cannot be assessed. More information is needed before clinical recommendations are made.

Abstract:Background Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are standard hormone therapy (HT) for the adjuvant treatment of postmenopausal endocrine-sensitive early breast cancer. Treatment discontinuation due to toxicity is an important issue that may help clinicians identify effective clinical interventions to allow adequate treatment duration. We reviewed the main reasons for interruption of AIs at our institution from 2006 to 2009. Methods 236 patients treated with adjuvant AIs were eligible for analysis. Median age was 64 years (35-89), median follow-up 53 months (6-60). Prior adjuvant chemotherapy was taxane based in 47 patients and anthracycline based in 43 patients. 118 patients had received letrozole, 101 anastrozole, and 17 exemestane. Results Twenty-four patients (10%) needed discontinuation of the first AI assigned as a result of toxicity. Grade 2/3 arthralgia was the main reason for discontinuation in 13/24 patients. No differences in the incidence of arthralgia were noted in patients who had received taxanes or anthracyclines. Headache, alopecia, itching, diffuse skin reaction, allergic reaction with hypertensive crisis, xerostomia and xerophthalmia, insomnia and somnolence were the other reasons for discontinuation. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, age (65 years) and HT were independent factors associated with the onset of arthralgia (p = 0.006 and p = 0.008, respectively; OR 2.65, 95% CI 1.32-5.31). Alternative HT (AI or tamoxifen) was offered to patients who wanted or needed to permanently interrupt the ongoing drug. Conclusions In our analysis, 10% of patients discontinued the first AI assigned because of toxicity. Median time course of all adverse events leading to HT discontinuation was 155 days and 135 days for arthralgia. A switch to alternative HT with toxicity monitoring is a recommended option for avoiding premature and permanent interruption of an effective treatment.

Abstract:As a building block for a GSM/PCN dual band RF transceiver IC, a low noise variable gain RF down conversion mixer is designed and fabricated using a 15 GHz-f/sub T/, 0.5 /spl mu/m 3-metal 2-poly BiCMOS process. Careful consideration is paid to the low noise performance of the mixer. Moreover, using constant-impedance input/output stages, RF input and IF output return losses are maintained under -16 dB for both high and low gain modes. Measured gain and DSB noise figure of the mixer are 10.9 dB and 9.1 dB, respectively, for GSM band, and 9.6 dB and 8.1 dB, respectively, for PCN band. Gain difference between high and low gain modes is 11 dB and 11.8 dB for GSM and PCN, respectively. Total DC currents are 13 mA for GSM and 11.5 mA for PCN from a 3 V supply voltage. Mixer performance is maintained with supply voltage down to 2.6 V.

Abstract:Background Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are recommended as adjuvant hormone treatment for postmenopausal women with early breast cancer. A substantial proportion of women taking AIs experience joint pain and stiffness. Studies have suggested that acupuncture may be effective in treating joint pain. Objective A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility, safety and efficacy of using acupuncture to treat AI-induced arthralgia. Methods A total of 32 patients were randomised to receive either sham or real electroacupuncture (EA) twice weekly for 6 weeks. Outcomes of joint pain, stiffness and physical function were measured with the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), overall pain severity and interference with the BPI-SF and quality of life (QOL) with the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G) instrument. Hand strength was assessed by a grip test, and a serum marker of inflammation (C reactive protein (CRP)) was also measured. All assessments were performed at baseline, 6 weeks and 12 weeks, except for blood samples at baseline and 6 weeks only. Results No serious adverse events were reported during or after acupuncture treatments. There were no significant differences in outcome measures. However, positive trends were observed in stiffness and physical function at week 12 in favour of real EA. Conclusions Findings suggest that acupuncture is feasible and safe in patients with breast cancer with joint pain caused by AI. A larger study with adequately powered to confirm these results and detect clinically relevant effects is needed.

Abstract:Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are widely used in women with breast cancer, but they are known to increase bone loss and risk of fractures. Based on available evidence and recommendations, an ESCEO working group proposes specific guidance for the prevention of AIs-induced bone loss and fragility fractures.IntroductionAromatase inhibitors (AIs) are now the standard treatment for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. However, deleterious effects of AIs on bone health have been reported. An ESCEO working group proposes guidance for the prevention of bone loss and fragility fractures in post-menopausal women with breast cancer receiving AIs.MethodsA panel of experts addressed the issue of skeletal effects of AIs and effectiveness of antifracture therapies for the prevention of AI-induced bone loss and fractures. Recommendations by national and international organizations, and experts’ opinions on this topic were evaluated.ResultsAll aromatase inhibitors are associated with negative effects on the skeleton, resulting in bone loss and increased risk of fragility fractures. Current guidelines suggest approaches that differ both in terms of drugs proposed for fracture prevention and duration of treatment.ConclusionThe ESCEO working group recommends that all AI-treated women should be evaluated for fracture risk. Besides general recommendations, zoledronic acid 4 mg i.v. every 6 months, denosumab s.c., or possibly oral bisphosphonates should be administered for the entire period of AI treatment to all osteoporotic women (T-score hip/spine <−2.5 or ≥1 prevalent fragility fracture), to women aged ≥75 irrespective of BMD, and to patients with T-score <−1.5 + ≥1 clinical risk factor or T-score <−1.0 + ≥2 clinical risk factors. Alternatively, therapy could be considered in patients with a FRAX-determined 10-year hip fracture probability ≥3%.

Aromatase Inhibitors and Plasma Lipid Changes in Postmenopausal Women with Breast Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Background: Women are typically diagnosed with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer around the postmenopausal period when declining estrogen levels initiate changes in lipid profiles. Aromatase inhibitors (AI) are used to prevent the progression of cancer; however, a further reduction in estrogen levels may have detrimental effects on lipid levels, which was our working hypothesis. Methods: Our meta-analysis was conducted on the lipid profiles of postmenopausal breast cancer patients at baseline and at different treatment time points. Results: We identified 15 studies, including 1708 patients. Studies using anastrozole (ANA), exemestane (EXE), letrozole (LET), and tamoxifen (TMX) were involved. Subgroup analyses revealed that 3- and 12-month administrations of LET and EXE lead to negative changes in lipid profiles that tend to alter the lipid profile undesirably, unlike ANA and TMX. Conclusions: Our results suggest that, despite statistically significant results, EXE and LET may not be sufficient to cause severe dyslipidemia in patients without cardiovascular comorbidities according to the AHA/ACC Guideline on the Management of Blood Cholesterol. However, the results may raise the question of monitoring the effects of AIs in patients, especially those with pre-existing cardiovascular risk factors such as dyslipidemia.
Extended Adjuvant Therapy with Aromatase Inhibitors for Early Breast Cancer: A Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Abstract:This meta-analysis aimed to assess the efficacy and toxicity of extended adjuvant aromatase inhibitors (AIs) in early breast cancer. Seven randomized clinical trials that involved 16,926 patients were selected for analysis. The results showed that extended AI therapy could significantly improve disease-free survival, especially for contralateral breast cancer recurrence. In addition, there were no significant differences between AIs and control for overall survival and serious adverse events. Background: Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are widely used for early breast cancer, whereas the efficacy and safety of extended AI adjuvant therapy compared with shorter AI therapy, observation, or placebo remains controversial. We conducted a quantitative meta-analysis to summarize available randomized controlled trials (RCTs) regarding the efficacy and safety of extended AI therapy for early breast cancer. Materials and Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, EmBase, and the Cochrane library to select studies published through March 2018. Studies designed as RCTs and that investigated overall survival (OS) or disease-free survival (DFS) for extended AI and shorter AI therapy, observation, or placebo were included. Hazard ratio (HR) and relative risk (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were employed to pool analysis according to data type. Results: We identified 7 RCTs that involved 16,926 patients with early breast cancer. The summary HRs indicated that extended treatment with AIs was not associated with OS (HR, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.82-1.10; P = .488), whereas it could significantly improve DFS as compared with shorter AI therapy, observation, or placebo (HR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.66-0.86; P < .001). Treatment with extended AIs significantly reduced contralateral breast cancer recurrence (RR, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.34-0.64; P < .001), whereas it has no significant effect on distant metastatic recurrence (RR, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.64-1.00; P = .055), and locoregional recurrence (RR, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.53-1.08; P = .127). There were no significant differences between treatment with extended AIs and control for grade 3 or more adverse events. Conclusion: Extended AI therapy could significantly improve DFS, especially for contralateral breast cancer recurrence. There were no significant differences between treatment with AIs and control for OS, distant metastatic and locoregional recurrence, and serious adverse events. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:Women with breast cancer treated with aromatase inhibitors (AIs) may experience musculoskeletal symptoms that lead to discontinuation of effective therapy. The purpose of the current study is to evaluate the clinical and genetic predictors for AIs-related musculoskeletal adverse events(MS-AEs).We recruited 436 postmenopausal Chinese Han women receiving adjuvant AIs therapy for early-stage hormone-sensitive breast cancer. Patients completed a self-administered questionnaire assessing the presence of musculoskeletal symptoms that started or worsened after initiating AIs. 27 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of ESR1, ESR2 and PGR were analyzed by Sequenom MassARRAY assays and /or PCR-based TaqMan assays.Of the 436 enrolled women, 206 cases experienced musculoskeletal symptoms.Patients who received taxane chemotherapy were more than two times more likely than other patients to have AIs-related MS-AEs. Genetic assay had showed that only two ESR1 SNPs, rs2234693 and rs9340799 were associated with AIs-related MS-AEs.TT genotype and the T allele in rs2234693 was statistically significantly lower in AIs-Related MS-AEs group than controls (P = 0.001; P = 9.49E-7). The frequency of AA genotype and the A allele in rs9340799 was higher (P = 2.20E-5; P = 3.09E-4).Our results suggested that prior taxane-based chemotherapy was the clinical predictor, while rs2234693 and rs9340799 were the genetic predictors for AIs-related MS-AEs.

Abstract:12122 Background: AIMT may lead to treatment discontinuation and detriment on clinical outcomes in pts with EBC. Recommended supportive care (SC) management include adequate physical activity (PA) levels, acupuncture, and physical therapy. Reasonable pharmacologic approaches include duloxetine use and switching AI. We assessed prevalence of AIMT, SC use, and non-adherence to AI. Methods: Postmenopausal pts with EBC treated with adjuvant AI were included from the longitudinal CANTO cohort (NCT01993498). AIMT was defined as any grade (G) articular or muscular pain (CTCAE v4.0) after 3-6 months (Y0), 1 (Y1), 3 (Y3) and 5 years (Y5) of AI. Non-pharmacologic SC included adherence to PA recommendations (≥10 MET-h/week), consulting with an acupuncturist, physical therapist, or osteopath. Pharmacological SC included use of duloxetine, oral complementary-alternative medicine (OCAM), and switching to a different AI. Non-adherence was defined as any interruption and/or permanent discontinuation of AI. Multivariable logistic regressions tested associations of reporting AIMT with subsequent SC use and with non-adherence to AI. Results: Among 4854 pts, 85.9% reported AIMT overall (G3 17.5%): 61.0% at Y0 (G3 9.9%), 68.5% at Y1 (G3 8.7%), 65.4% at Y3 (G3 9.0%), and 57.0% at Y5 (G3 8.8%). Pts with AIMT were younger, with higher rate of previous musculoskeletal problems, and more frequently received chemotherapy. First and second prescribed AIs were mostly letrozole (54%) and exemestane (56%), respectively. Pts reporting AIMT at Y0 were less likely, by Y1, to adhere to PA recommendations (59.3% vs 62.6%), and slightly more likely to consult with an acupuncturist (9.0% vs 7.6%), physical therapist (46.0% vs 35.0%), or osteopath (22.4 vs 16.3%) compared to pts without AIMT. Results were consistent at remaining time-points. In multivariable models, reporting AIMT was consistently associated over time only with subsequent physical therapy consultations (adjusted [a]OR [95%CI]: Y1, 1.48 [1.24-1.78]; Y3, 1.40 [1.13-1.74]; Y5, 1.45 [1.10-1.91]), but not with other non-pharmacological SC. Only 1.4% of pts with AIMT reported duloxetine use, while 25.3% OCAM use. Switching AI was reported by 19.7% of pts with AIMT (aOR of AI switch vs no AIMT 2.47 [1.59-3.83]). 18.4% of pts reporting AIMT were non-adherent to AI: 6.0% had interruptions and 17.8% permanent discontinuations. Reporting overall AIMT was associated with non-adherence to AI (aOR vs no AIMT 2.38 [1.49-3.79]). Conclusions: Despite AIMT was highly prevalent and associated with non-adherence to AI in this prospective cohort, uptake of recommended SC strategies to manage AIMT seemed suboptimal and inconsistent over time. This large study highlights gaps in the implementation of guideline-concordant SC and warrants efforts to maximize treatment retention among pts with EBC treated with adjuvant AI.

Abstract:Following their successful implementation for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, the 'third-generation' aromatase inhibitors (anastrozole, letrozole, and exemestane) have now become standard adjuvant endocrine treatment for postmenopausal estrogen receptor-positive breast cancers. These drugs are characterized by potent aromatase inhibition, causing >98% inhibition of estrogen synthesis in vivo. A recent meta-analysis found no difference in anti-tumor efficacy between these three compounds. As of today, aromatase inhibitor monotherapy and sequential treatment using tamoxifen followed by an aromatase inhibitor for a total of 5 years are considered equipotent treatment options. However, current trials are addressing the potential benefit of extending treatment duration beyond 5 years. Regarding side effects, aromatase inhibitors are not found associated with enhanced risk of cardiovascular disease, and enhanced bone loss is prevented by adding bisphosphonates in concert for those at danger of developing osteoporosis. However, arthralgia and carpal tunnel syndrome preclude drug administration among a few patients. While recent findings have questioned the use of aromatase inhibitors among overweight and, in particular, obese patients, this problem seems to focus on premenopausal patients treated with an aromatase inhibitor and an LH-RH analog in concert, questioning the efficacy of LH-RH analogs rather than aromatase inhibitors among overweight patients. Finally, recent findings revealing a benefit from adding the mTOR inhibitor everolimus to endocrine treatment indicate targeted therapy against defined growth factor pathways to be a way forward, by reversing acquired resistance to endocrine therapy.
Pilot study of acupuncture for the treatment of joint symptoms related to adjuvant aromatase inhibitor therapy in postmenopausal breast cancer patients

Abstract:IntroductionAromatase inhibitors (AIs) have become the standard of care for the adjuvant treatment of postmenopausal, hormone-sensitive breast cancer. However, patients receiving AIs may experience joint symptoms, which may lead to early discontinuation of this effective therapy. We hypothesize that acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for AI-induced arthralgias.MethodsPostmenopausal women with early-stage breast cancer who had self-reported musculoskeletal pain related to adjuvant AI therapy were randomized in a crossover study to receive acupuncture twice weekly for 6 weeks followed by observation or vice-versa. The intervention included full body and auricular acupuncture, and a joint-specific point prescription. Outcome measures included the Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form (BPI-SF), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis (WOMAC) index, the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G) quality of life measure, and serum levels of inflammatory markers, IL-1β and TNF-α.ResultsTwenty-one women were enrolled and two discontinued early. From baseline to the end of treatment, patients reported improvement in the mean BPI-SF worst pain scores (5.3 to 3.3, p = 0.01), pain severity (3.7 to 2.5, p = 0.02), and pain-related functional interference (3.1 to 1.7, p = 0.02), as well as the WOMAC function subscale and FACT-G physical well-being (p = 0.02 and 0.04, respectively). No adverse events were reported.Discussion/conclusionsIn this pilot study, acupuncture reduced AI-related joint symptoms and improved functional ability and was well-tolerated.Implications for cancer survivorsMusculoskeletal side effects are common among breast cancer survivors on adjuvant AI therapy, therefore, effective treatments are needed for symptom relief and to improve adherence to these life-saving medications.
