Abstract:Children who are treated for malignancy have been shown to have decreased bone mineral density. We investigated the effect of serial courses of chemotherapy on growth and bone turnover in children with solid tumors. We measured height, weight, and lower leg length (LLL; n = 10) and markers of bone formation [bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP) and C-terminal propeptide of type I collagen (P1CP)], bone resorption [C terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (1CTP)], soft tissue collagen turnover [N-terminal propeptide of type III procollagen (P3NP)], and the GH axis [IGF1 and its binding proteins (IGFBP3 and IGFBP2)] before and after each course (n = 25) and on completion of treatment (n = 12). Height SD score decreased during treatment (p < 0.01) and increased to pretreatment levels at 3 mo off treatment (p < 0.05). LLL growth increased off treatment (p < 0.01). At diagnosis, BALP, PICP, and IGF1 SD score were low compared with age- and sex-matched reference groups (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, and p < 0.002, respectively) and IGFBP2 was elevated (p < 0.001). During treatment, P1CP, 1CTP, and P3NP showed a cyclical pattern decreasing after each course (p < 0.001) and increasing before the next course (p < 0.001). Precourse levels of BALP, P1CP, 1CTP, P3NP, IGF1, and IGFBP3 showed an upward trend during treatment. BALP remained suppressed throughout treatment (p < 0.001). Intense courses of treatment for solid tumors have a direct suppressive effect on bone turnover, with an imbalance between collagen synthesis and degradation.
Distribution and Antifungal Susceptibility of Candida Species Causing Candidemia in China: an Update from the CHIF-NET Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Candidemia is the most common, serious fungal infection and Candida antifungal resistance is a challenge. We report recent surveillance of candidemia in China. METHODS:The study encompassed 77 Chinese hospitals over 3 years. Identification of Candida species was by mass spectrometry and DNA sequencing. Antifungal susceptibility was determined using the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute broth microdilution method. RESULTS:In total, 4010 isolates were collected from candidemia patients. Although C. albicans was the most common species, non-albicans Candida species accounted for over two-thirds of isolates, predominated C. parapsilosis complex (27.1%), C. tropicalis (18.7%), and C. glabrata complex (12.0%). Most C. albicans and C. parapsilosis complex isolates were susceptible to all antifungal agents (resistance rate <5%). However, there was a decrease in voriconazole susceptibility to C. glabrata sensu stricto over the 3 years and fluconazole resistance rate in C. tropicalis tripled. Amongst less common Candida species, over one-third of C. pelliculosa isolates were coresistant to fluconazole and 5-flucytocine, and >56% of C. haemulonii isolates were multidrug resistance. CONCLUSIONS:Non-albicans Candida species are the predominant cause of candidemia in China. Azole resistance is notable amongst C. tropicalis and C. glabrata. Coresistance and multidrug resistance has emerged in less common Candida species.
Serious fungal infections in the Philippines

Abstract:The Philippines is a low middle-income, tropical country in Southeast Asia. Infectious diseases remain the main causes of morbidity, including tuberculosis. AIDS/HIV prevalence is still low at <1%, but is rapidly increasing. Fungal disease surveillance has not been done, and its burden has never been estimated. This becomes more important as the population of immunocompromised patients increases, drawn from patients with AIDS, TB, malignancies, and autoimmune diseases requiring chronic steroid use. Using the methodology of the LIFE program ( www.LIFE-worldwide.org ), estimates were derived from data gathered from WHO, UNAIDS, Philippine Health Statistics 2011, Philippine Dermatological Society Health Information System database, HIV/AIDS and ART registry of the Philippines, epidemiological studies such as The TREAT Asia HIV Observational Database 2005, and personal communication. Aspergillosis and candidiasis were the top causes of fungal infections in the Philippines. Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA), drawn from the number of tuberculosis patients, affects 77,172 people. Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) and severe asthma with fungal sensitization (SAFS) frequencies, which were derived from the number of asthmatic patients, affect 121,113 and 159,869 respectively. Recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC) affects 1,481,899 women. Other estimates were cryptococcal meningitis 84, Pneumocystis pneumonia 391, oral candidiasis 3,467, esophageal candidiasis 1,522 (all in HIV-infected people), invasive aspergillosis (IA) 3,085, candidemia 1,968, candida peritonitis 246, mucormycosis 20, fungal keratitis 358, tinea capitis 846 and mycetoma 97 annually. A total of 1,852,137 (1.9% of population) are afflicted with a serious fungal infection. Epidemiological studies are needed to validate these estimates, facilitating appropriate medical care of patients and proper prioritization of limited resources.

Abstract:Objective: : To estimate the incidence and prevalence of serious fungal infections in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), with a population of 1 394 973 million. Methods: : The medical literature was searched to obtain published data on the incidence and prevalence of fungal infections in the Caribbean. If data were unavailable, estimations were performed using the frequencies of fungal infection in populations at risk. Asthma and pulmonary tuberculosis rates were used to derive the prevalence of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), severe asthma with fungal sensitization (SAFS), and chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA). Results: : The estimated annual burden of fungal infections was 46 156 persons (3.3% of the population), including 21 455 women with recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis, 118 persons with invasive aspergillosis, 3637 adults with ABPA, 4800 with SAFS, and 178 with CPA. Annually, we estimated 70 cases of candidemia and 14 647 cases of tinea capitis in children. Of the 11 000 persons living with HIV/AIDS, it was estimated that there were 40 cases of cryptococcal meningitis, 88 cases of disseminated histoplasmosis, and 124 cases of Pneumocystis pneumonia. Conclusion: : There seems to be an extensive burden of fungal infections in T&T. Hence, targeted interventions are required to improve clinical and laboratory diagnosis and a national surveillance system should be implemented.
Serious fungal diseases in Democratic Republic of Congo – Incidence and prevalence estimates

Abstract:From the analysis of published articles, we estimate a total of about 5,177,000 people (5.4%) suffer from serious fungal infections in the DRC annually. The incidence of cryptococcal meningitis, Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia in adults and invasive aspergillosis in AIDS patients was estimated at 6168, 2800 and 380 cases per year. Oral and oesophageal candidiasis represent 50,470 and 28,800 HIV-infected patients respectively. Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis post-tuberculosis incidence and prevalence was estimated to be 54,700. Fungal asthma (allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and severe asthma with fungal sensitisation) probably has a prevalence of 88,800 and 117,200. The estimated prevalence of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis and tinea capitis is 1,202,640 and 3,551,900 respectively.Further work is required to provide additional studies on opportunistic infections for improving diagnosis and the implementation of a national surveillance program of fungal disease in the DRC.

Abstract:Approximately 65-70% of the crew members now experience motion sickness of some degree during the first 72 h of orbital flight on the Space Shuttle. Lack of congruence among signals from spatial orientation systems leads to sensory conflict, which appears to be the basic cause of space motion sickness. A project to develop training devices and procedures to preadapt astronauts to the stimulus rearrangements of microgravity is currently being pursued. The preflight adaptation trainers (PATs) are intended to: demonstrate sensory phenomena likely to be experienced in flight, allow astronauts to train preflight in an altered sensory environment, alter sensory-motor reflexes, and alleviate or shorten the duration of space motion sickness. Four part-task PATs are anticipated. The trainers are designed to evoke two adaptation processes, sensory compensation and sensory reinterpretation, which are necessary to maintain spatial orientation in a weightless environment. Recent investigations using one of the trainers indicate that self-motion perception of linear translation is enhanced when body tilt is combined with visual surround translation, and that a 270 degrees phase angle relationship between tilt and surround motion produces maximum translation perception.

Abstract:Summary Current estimates of fungal disease incidence and mortality are imprecise. Population at risk denominators were used to estimate annual incidence for 2019–21. Extensive literature searches from 2010 to 2023 were combined with over 85 papers on individual country and global disease burden. Crude and attributable mortality were estimated using a combination of untreated mortality, the proportion of patients who are treated, and percentage survival in treated patients. Awareness, guidelines, and accessibility of diagnostics and therapies informed the ratio of treated to untreated cases. Estimates do not include influenza or COVID-19 outbreaks. Data from more than 120 countries were included. Annually, over 2 113 000 people develop invasive aspergillosis in the context of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, intensive care, lung cancer, or haematological malignancy, with a crude annual mortality of 1 801 000 (85·2%). The annual incidence of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis is 1 837 272, with 340 000 (18·5%) deaths. About 1 565 000 people have a Candida bloodstream infection or invasive candidiasis each year, with 995 000 deaths (63·6%). Pneumocystis pneumonia affects 505 000 people, with 214 000 deaths (42·4%). Cryptococcal meningitis affects 194 000 people, with 147 000 deaths (75·8%). Other major life-threatening fungal infections affect about 300 000 people, causing 161 000 deaths (53·7%). Fungal asthma affects approximately 11·5 million people and might contribute to 46 000 asthma deaths annually. These updated estimates suggest an annual incidence of 6·5 million invasive fungal infections and 3·8 million deaths, of which about 2·5 million (68%; range 35–90) were directly attributable.

Abstract:The true burden of fungal infection in Pakistan is unknown. High-risk populations for fungal infections [tuberculosis (TB), diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, asthma, cancer, transplant and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection] are numerous. Here, we estimate the burden of fungal infections to highlight their public health significance. Whole and at-risk population estimates were obtained from the WHO (TB), BREATHE study (COPD), UNAIDS (HIV), GLOBOCAN (cancer) and Heartfile (diabetes). Published data from Pakistan reporting fungal infections rates in general and specific populations were reviewed and used when applicable. Estimates were made for the whole population or specific populations at risk, as previously described in the LIFE methodology. Of the 184,500,000 people in Pakistan, an estimated 3,280,549 (1.78%) are affected by a serious fungal infection, omitting all cutaneous infection, oral candidiasis and allergic fungal sinusitis, which we could not estimate. Compared with other countries, the rates of candidaemia (21/100,000) and mucormycosis (14/100,000) are estimated to be very high, and are based on data from India. Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis rates are estimated to be high (39/100,000) because of the high TB burden. Invasive aspergillosis was estimated to be around 5.9/100,000. Fungal keratitis is also problematic in Pakistan, with an estimated rate of 44/100,000. Pakistan probably has a high rate of certain life- or sight-threatening fungal infections.

Re-estimation of the burden of serious fungal diseases in Uganda

Abstract:Background: It is of utmost importance to monitor any change in the epidemiology of fungal diseases that may arise from a change in the number of the at-risk population or the availability of local data. Objective: We sought to update the 2015 publication on the incidence and prevalence of serious fungal diseases in Uganda. Methods: Using the Leading International Fungal Education methodology, we reviewed published data on fungal diseases and drivers of fungal diseases in Uganda. Regional or global data were used where there were no Ugandan data. Results: With a population of ~45 million, we estimate the annual burden of serious fungal diseases at 4,099,357 cases (about 9%). We estimated the burden of candidiasis as follows: recurrent Candida vaginitis (656,340 cases), oral candidiasis (29,057 cases), and esophageal candidiasis (74,686 cases) in HIV-infected people. Cryptococcal meningitis annual incidence is estimated at 5553 cases, Pneumocystis pneumonia at 4604 cases in adults and 2100 cases in children. For aspergillosis syndromes, invasive aspergillosis annual incidence (3607 cases), chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (26,765 annual cases and 63,574 5-year-period prevalent cases), and prevalence of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis at 75,931 cases, and severe asthma with fungal sensitization at 100,228 cases. Tinea capitis is common with 3,047,989 prevalent cases. For other mycoses, we estimate the annual incidence of histoplasmosis to be 646 cases and mucormycosis at 9 cases. Conclusion: Serious fungal diseases affect nearly 9% of Ugandans every year. Tuberculosis and HIV remain the most important predisposition to acute fungal infection necessitating accelerated preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic interventions for the management of these diseases.

Abstract:Theories of the pathophysiology of schizophrenia have implicated the hippocampus, but controversy remains regarding hippocampal abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia. In vivo studies of hippocampal anatomy using high resolution magnetic resonance scanning and manual methods for volumetric measurement have yielded inconclusive results, perhaps because of the normal variability in hippocampal volume and the error involved in manual measurement techniques. To resolve this controversy, high dimensional transformations of a computerized brain template were used to compare hippocampal volumes and shape characteristics in 15 matched pairs of schizophrenia and control subjects. The transformations were derived from principles of general pattern matching and were constrained according to the physical properties of fluids. The analysis and comparison of hippocampal shapes based on these transformations were far superior to the comparison of hippocampal volumes or other global indices of hippocampal anatomy in showing a statistically significant difference between the two groups. In the schizophrenia subjects, hippocampal shape deformations were found to be localized to subregions of the structure that send projections to prefrontal cortex. The results of this study demonstrate that abnormalities of hippocampal anatomy occur in schizophrenia and support current hypotheses that schizophrenia involves a disturbance of hippocampal-prefrontal connections. These results also show that comparisons of neuroanatomical shapes can be more informative than volume comparisons for identifying individuals with neuropsychiatric diseases, such as schizophrenia.

Burden of serious fungal infections in Bangladesh

Abstract:In Bangladesh there are several published papers on superficial mycoses. Deep mycoses are also recognized as an important emerging problem. Here, we estimate the annual incidence and prevalence of serious fungal infections in Bangladesh. Demographic data were obtained from world population reports and the data on TB and HIV extracted from the online publications on tuberculosis in Bangladesh and Asia Pacific research statistical data information resources AIDS Data HUB. All the published papers on fungal infections in Bangladesh were identified through extensive search of literature. We estimated the number of affected people from populations at risk and local epidemiological data. Bangladesh has a population of ∼162.6 million, 31% children and only 6% over the age of 60 years. The pulmonary TB caseload reported in 2014 was 119,520, and we estimate a prevalence of 30,178 people with chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, 80% attributable to TB. An anticipated 90,262 and 119,146 patients have allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis or severe asthma with fungal sensitization. Only 8,000 people are estimated to be HIV-infected, of whom 2900 are not on ART with a CD4 count <350 μL, Pneumocystis pneumonia and cryptococcal meningitis being rare. Superficial mycoses are very common with Trichophyton rubrum as the predominant etiological agent (80.6%). Numerous cases of mycotic keratitis have been reported from several parts of Bangladesh. Candida bloodstream infection was estimated based on a 5 per 100,000 rate (8100 cases) and invasive aspergillosis based primarily on leukemia and COPD rates, at 5166 cases. Histoplasmosis was documented in 16 cases mostly with disseminated disease and presumed in 21 with HIV infection. This study constitutes the first attempt to estimate the burden of several types of serious fungal infections in Bangladesh.
Determining the burden of fungal infections in Zimbabwe

Abstract:Zimbabwe currently faces several healthcare challenges, most notably HIV and associated infections including tuberculosis (TB), malaria and recently outbreaks of cholera, typhoid fever and COVID-19. Fungal infections, which are also a major public health threat, receive considerably less attention. Consequently, there is dearth of data regarding the burden of fungal diseases in the country. We estimated the burden of fungal diseases in Zimbabwe based on published literature and 'at-risk' populations (HIV/AIDS patients, survivors of pulmonary TB, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and patients receiving critical care) using previously described methods. Where there was no data for Zimbabwe, regional, or international data was used. Our study revealed that approximately 14.9% of Zimbabweans suffer from fungal infections annually, with 80% having tinea capitis. The annual incidence of cryptococcal meningitis and Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia in HIV/AIDS were estimated at 41/100,000 and 63/100,000, respectively. The estimated prevalence of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC) was 2,739/100,000. The estimated burden of fungal diseases in Zimbabwe is high in comparison to other African countries, highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness and surveillance to improve diagnosis and management.
Estimated burden of serious fungal infections in Togo

Abstract:Background: Over the years, the focus of infectious diseases in many African countries has been mainly on viral, bacterial and parasitic infections. Serious fungal infections (SFIs) with comparable morbidity rate in these countries remain neglected. Objectives: To estimate the burden of SFI in Togo and to stimulate efforts for improved attention. Methods: Literature was thoroughly searched for epidemiological data on SFI in Togo. Incidence and/or prevalence of SFI was estimated using socio-demographics, health system's information, risk-groups data and SFI rates obtained from national and international studies. Results: About 5.29% of the 7,265,286 Togolese population is estimated to suffer from SFI annually. Among HIV patients, 1,342, 1,650 and 330 may develop cryptococcal meningitis, Pneumocystis pneumonia and disseminated histoplasmosis respectively per year. Oral and oesophageal candidiasis may annually affect 19,800 and 7,535 persons, respectively, living with HIV. Estimated incidence of invasive aspergillosis (IA) was 283 cases. Prevalence of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) was estimated at 191 cases. The annual incidence of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) and severe asthma with fungal sensitization (SAFS) was 4,577 and 6,042 cases, respectively. Tinea capitis and recurrent Candida vaginitis presumably affect 232,271 children and 108,979 women respectively. Candidaemia incidence is estimated at 5 cases per 100, 000 inhabitants and fungal keratitis may affect 981 persons annually. Conclusions: SFIs in Togo are probably more significant than expected. These findings underscore the need to increase awareness among healthcare professionals, enhance diagnostic and therapeutic capacities and intensify epidemiological studies for effective management of fungal infections in Togo.

Fungal infections in Algeria

Abstract:Introduction: Invasive and superficial fungal infections are increasingly reported in Algeria, testifying to the increase in their frequency in parallel with the increase in risk factors and the availability of diagnostic means, at least in university hospitals (CHU). The latter, located in the major northern cities, are equipped with high-performance diagnostic tools compared to hospitals in the interior of the country. Methods: A comprehensive search of published and grey literature was undertaken. Prevalence and incidence of discrete fungal diseases were estimated using a deterministic modelling approach based on populations at risk. Population (2021) and major underlying disease risk groups were obtained from UNAIDS, WHO Tuberculosis and the international transplant registries as well as published data for asthma and COPD. The health service profile was summarised from national documentation. Results: Among the 43.6 million, including 12.9 million children, living in Algeria, the most prevalent fungal diseases are tinea capitis (>1.5 million), recurrent vaginal candidiasis (>500,000) and allergic fungal lung and sinus disorders (>110,000) and chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (>10,000). Life-threatening invasive fungal infection incidence includes 774 Pneumocystis pneumonia in AIDS, 361 cryptococcal meningitis, 2272 candidaemia and 2639 invasive aspergillosis cases. Fungal keratitis probably affects >6000 eyes each year. Conclusions: Fungal infections are underestimated in Algeria because they are sought in patients with risk factors only after bacterial infections when they should be sought in parallel. The diagnosis is only accessible in hospitals in large cities and the work carried out in mycology is rarely published, making the estimation of the burden of these conditions difficult.

Fungal diseases as neglected pathogens: A wake-up call to public health officials

Abstract:Human fungal diseases differ fundamentally from other infections in diverse ways. As eukaryotic pathogens, fungi share many similarities with their host cells, which impairs the development of antifungal compounds. Fungal tropism is highly variable, as pathogens infect a wide range of cell types. A single fungal pathogen can infect multiple tissues in the same patient (depending on the host's immunological status) and can undergo morphogenic shifts during infection. Fungi are still underappreciated as major pathogens by both the public and public health officials. Diseases caused by protozoa, bacteria, and viruses have been recognized as important public health issues for centuries. For instance, syphilis, influenza, and Chagas disease have been documented for over 100 years [<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref001">1</a>], while invasive mycoses were only widely acknowledged as medically important pathogens in the 1980s [<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref002">2</a>].Viral diseases of major population impact (such as smallpox, influenza and—more recently—dengue, Zika, Chikungunya, and coronavirus) have affected millions of people with significant effects on human health in developed, developing, and less developed nations [<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref003">3</a>,<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref004">4</a>]. These conditions have boosted the generation of knowledge, which has led to the eradication of smallpox [<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref005">5</a>], the wide availability of effective vaccines [<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref006">6</a>], and the development of diagnostic and preventive tools against influenza [<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref007">7</a>] and, more recently, Zika [<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref008">8</a>]. Bacterial diseases have profoundly impacted human health at different times in history, and although the phenomenon of antimicrobial resistance is a matter of extreme concern, there are several effective tools for the prevention, treatment, and diagnosis of bacterial infections [<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref009">9</a>]. Human parasitosis have been recognized to negatively impact public health in different parts of the globe for decades, which has stimulated the ongoing development of vaccines, new drugs, and diagnostic tests for malaria, sleeping sickness, leishmaniasis, filariasis, and Chagas disease [<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref010">10</a>]. Fungal infections, however, are part of a different scenario. These diseases, for most of recorded history as well as the majority of the last century, have been rare or had a low impact on human health.The increase in the number of immunocompromised patients, some of whom are highly susceptible to fungal infections, has totally changed this picture. The invasive diseases caused by fungi, the so-called systemic mycoses, profoundly impact human health. Moreover, the Global Action Fund for Fungal Infections (GAFFI) also highlights the devastating impact of focal fungal diseases in individuals who often have intact immune systems. GAFFI estimates that more than 1 million eyes go blind each year due to fungal keratitis [<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref011">11</a>]. Nearly one billion people have skin mycoses, which makes this disease only slightly less common on the planet than headaches and dental caries. Fungal spores contribute to significant reactive airway diseases in over 10 million individuals. In total, the GAFFI estimates that over 300 million people of all ages suffer from a serious fungal infection each year globally [<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref011">11</a>]. Notably, over 1.5 million of these individuals are estimated to die from their fungal disease [<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref012">12</a>].Individual fungal diseases have profound impacts on human health. Around 220,000 new cases of cryptococcal meningitis occur worldwide each year, resulting in 181,000 deaths concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa [<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref013">13</a>]. More than 400,000 people develop <em>Pneumocystis</em> pneumonia annually and die without access to therapy [<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref011">11</a>]. In Latin America, histoplasmosis is one of the most common opportunistic infections among people living with HIV/AIDS, and approximately 30% of patients diagnosed with histoplasmosis in that region die from this disease [<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref012">12</a>]. Morbidity rates linked to fungal infections also represent an important health issue. For example, diseases such as chromoblastomycosis and eumycetoma lead to destructive deformations and debilitating conditions of the subcutaneous tissues, skin, and underlying bones, which result in social exclusion [<a class="ref-tip" href="#pntd.0007964.ref014">14</a>].

The Burden of Serious Fungal Infections in Tajikistan

Abstract:Tajikistan is a low-income country in Middle Asia with a population of 8.9 million people. Five percent of the population lives on less than 1.9 USD a day and 54% live on less than 5.5 USD a day. We have estimated the burden of serious fungal infections in Tajikistan. It was estimated that 168,834 Tajik women develop recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis. Among HIV-positive patients, we estimate 490 patients with oesophageal candidiasis and 1260 patients with oral candidiasis, 41 cases of cryptococcal meningitis and 210 cases of Pneumocystis pneumonia annually. According to our estimations there are 774 cases of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) as a sequel of tuberculosis; CPA may occur as a consequence of multiple pulmonary conditions and the total prevalence of 4161 cases was estimated. We have estimated 6008 cased of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) and 7930 cases of severe asthma with fungal sensitisation (SAFS), and 137 fungal asthma deaths annually. We have estimated 445 cases of candidemia a year applying a low European rate. There are approximately 283 cases of invasive aspergillosis annually. There are 189,662 (2.1% of the population) people suffering from serious fungal infections in Tajikistan. Hence, improving diagnostics is the first step of understanding a scale of the fungal burden.

Abstract:We conducted a systematic literature review to obtain risk population-based fungal disease incidence or prevalence data from China. Data were categorized by risk factors and extrapolated by using most recent demographic figures. A total of 71,316,101 cases (5.0% of the population) were attributed to 12 risk factors and 17 fungal diseases. Excluding recurrent Candida vaginitis (4,057/100,000 women) and onychomycosis (2,600/100,000 persons), aspergillosis (317/100,000 persons) was the most common problem; prevalence exceeded that in most other countries. Cryptococcal meningitis, an opportunistic infection, occurs in immunocompetent persons almost twice as often as AIDS. The pattern of fungal infections also varies geographically; Talaromyces marneffei is distributed mainly in the Pearl River Basin, and the Yangtze River bears the greatest histoplasmosis burden. New host populations, new endemic patterns, and high fungal burdens in China, which caused a huge impact on public health, underscore the urgent need for building diagnostic and therapeutic capacity.
