Abstract:The ultraviolet multi-filter rotating shadow-band radiometer (UV-MFRSR) is a seven-channel radiometer with narrowband filters centered between wavelengths 300 and 368 nm. Four of the middle wavelengths in this device are near those used in the Dobson spectrometer to retrieve ozone column abundance. In this paper measurements from Mauna Loa Observatory (MLO) were used first to calibrate the instrument using the Langley plot method and subsequently to derive column ozone and aerosol optical depths. The ozone derived from the UV-MFRSR was compared to the ozone measured by a Dobson spectrophotometer that operates daily at the MLO, resulting in column values within about 1 DU on average for 43 d in 2018. The aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrievals are more challenging. Generally, the AOD increases with wavelength between 305 and 332 nm, not what is expected given the typical AOD wavelength dependence at visible wavelengths. An example of this behavior is discussed, and research by others is cited that indicates similar behavior at these wavelengths, at least for the low-aerosol-optical-depth conditions encountered at high-altitude sites.

Abstract:A novel ultraviolet spectrometer has been developed and tested over 10 years at Lauder, New Zealand. The system, UV2, makes alternating measurements of the global and direct UV irradiance and can therefore be used to measure ozone and aerosol optical depth. After an analysis of the stability of UV2, these measurements, along with UV irradiance, are compared to relevant observations made by an additional UV spectrometer (UV4), a Dobson spectrophotometer (no. 072), and two radiometers measuring aerosol optical depth – a Prede sky radiometer and a Middleton Solar radiometer (SP02). UV2 irradiance is shown to be lower than UV4 by between 2.5 % and 3.5 %, with a standard deviation of a similar magnitude. Total column ozone values are shown to agree with Dobson spectrophotometer values with a mean bias of 2.57 Dobson units (DU) and standard deviation of 1.15 DU when using the direct sun measurements. Aerosol optical depth at 400–412 and 500 nm agrees to within 0.015 and is comparable to the difference between the reference radiometers. Further work is needed, particularly in the radiometric calibration at longer wavelengths, in order to determine if this instrument can supersede or enhance measurements made by the Dobson spectrophotometer or the aerosol radiometers.

Global spectral UV-radiometer with automatic shadow band

Abstract:A solar radiometer (GUV-511 C, Biospherical Instruments Inc., San Diego, CA) with four UV channels has been operating at Trelew (43.2 degrees S, 65.3 degrees W), Argentina, since the austral spring of 1997. The instrument provides global (direct + diffuse) irradiance on the horizontal plane year-round, with a 1 min period. On 1 January 1999, an automatic shadow band was added to calculate diffuse and direct radiation. The period of the measurements was increased to 2 min to keep the same signal to noise (S:N) ratio. Once the direct radiation values were available for the 305 nm and 320 nm spectral bands, the total ozone value was calculated and results were compared with data provided by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration for the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) on the Earth Probe satellite. Results show a root-mean-square (RMS) deviation within 4% compared with that of TOMS, so the quality of results is considered to be quite good. The importance of regular calibration to maintain long-term accuracy is stressed.

Abstract:The Far-Infrared Radiation Mobile Observation System (FIRMOS) is a Fourier transform spectroradiometer developed to support the Far-infrared Outgoing Radiation Understanding and Monitoring (FORUM) satellite mission by validating measurement methods and instrument design concepts, both in the laboratory and in field campaigns. FIRMOS is capable of measuring the downwelling spectral radiance emitted by the atmosphere in the spectral band from 100 to 1000 cm −1 (10–100 μm in wavelength), with a maximum spectral resolution of 0.25 cm −1 . We describe the instrument design and its characterization and discuss the geophysical products obtained by inverting the atmospheric spectral radiance measured during a campaign from the high-altitude location of Mount Zugspitze in Germany, beside the Extended-range Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (E-AERI), which is permanently installed at the site. Following the selection of clear-sky scenes, using a specific algorithm, the water vapour and temperature profiles were retrieved from the FIRMOS spectra by applying the Kyoto protocol and Informed Management of the Adaptation (KLIMA) code. The profiles were found in very good agreement with those provided by radiosondes and by the Raman lidar operating from the Zugspitze Schneefernerhaus station. In addition, the retrieval products were validated by comparing the retrieved integrated water vapour values with those obtained from the E-AERI spectra.

Abstract:Abstract. The Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) has been the baseline network of instruments that record solar absorption spectra from which accurate and precise column-averaged dry air mole fractions of CO2 (XCO2), CH4 (XCH4), CO (XCO) and other gases are retrieved. The TCCON data have been widely used for carbon cycle science and validation of satellites measuring greenhouse gas concentrations globally. The number of stations in the network (currently about 25) is limited and the stations are distributed mostly in Northern America, Europe, Japan and Oceania leaving gaps in the global coverage. A denser distribution of ground-based solar absorption measurements is needed to cover various atmospheric conditions (humid, dry, polluted, presence of aerosol), various surface conditions (high and low albedo) and a larger latitudinal distribution. More stations in the southern hemisphere are also needed but a further expansion of the network is limited by its costs and logistical requirements. For this reason several groups are investigating supplemental portable low-cost instruments. The European Space Agency (ESA) funded campaign Fiducial Reference Measurements for Ground-Based Infrared Greenhouse Gas Observations (FRM4GHG) at the Sodankylä TCCON site in northern Finland aims at characterising the assessment of several low-cost portable instruments for precise solar absorption measurements of XCO2, XCH4 and XCO. The test instruments under investigation are three Fourier transform spectrometers (FTS): a Bruker EM27/SUN, a Bruker IRcube and a Bruker Vertex70; as well as a Laser Heterodyne spectro-Radiometer (LHR) developed by the UK Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. All four remote sensing instruments performed measurements simultaneously next to the reference TCCON instrument, a Bruker IFS 125HR, for a full year in 2017. The TCCON FTS was operated in its normal high-resolution mode (TCCON data set) and in a special low-resolution mode (HR125LR data set), similar to the portable spectrometers. The remote sensing measurements have been complemented by regular AirCore launches performed from the same site. They provide in-situ vertical profiles of the target gas concentrations as auxiliary reference data for the column retrievals which is traceable to the WMO SI standards. The timeseries, the bias relative to the reference instrument and its scatter and the seasonal and the day-to-day variations of the target gases are shown and discussed. The comparisons with the HR125LR data set gave useful analysis of the resolution dependent effects on the target gas retrieval. The solar zenith angle dependence of the retrievals is shown and discussed. The reference measurements performed with the Bruker IFS 125HR (TCCON and HR125LR data sets) were found to be affected by non-linearity. A non-linearity correction of the TCCON data was performed and compared with the test instruments and AirCore. The non-linearity corrected TCCON data show a better match with the test instruments and AirCore data as compared to the reference TCCON data. The intercomparison results show that the LHR data have a large scatter and biases with a strong diurnal variation relative to the TCCON and other FTS instruments. The LHR is a new instrument under development and these biases are being currently investigated and addressed. The campaign helped to characterise and identify the instrumental biases and possibly retrieval biases which are currently under investigation. Further improvements of the instrument are ongoing. The EM27/SUN, the IRcube, the modified Vertex70 and the HR125LR provided stable and precise measurements of the target gases during the campaign with quantified small biases. The bias dependence on the humidity along the measurement line-of-sight has been investigated and no dependence was found. These three portable low-resolution FTS instruments are suitable to be used for campaign deployment or long-term measurements from any site and offer the ability to complement the TCCON and expand the global coverage of ground-based reference measurements of the target gases.
NILU-UV multi-filter radiometer total ozone columns: Comparison with satellite observations over Thessaloniki, Greece

Abstract:This study aims to construct and validate a neural network (NN) model for the production of high frequency (~1min) ground-based estimates of total ozone column (TOC) at a mid-latitude UV and ozone monitoring station in the Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (LAP/AUTh) for the years 2005-2014. In the first stage of model development, ~30,000 records of coincident solar UV spectral irradiance measurements from a Norsk Institutt for Luftforskning (NILU)-UV multi-filter radiometer and TOC measurements from a co-located Brewer spectroradiometer are used to train a NN to learn the nonlinear functional relation between the irradiances and TOC. The model is then subjected to sensitivity analysis and validation. Close agreement is obtained (R2=0.94, RMSE=8.21 DU and bias=-0.15 DU relative to the Brewer) for the training data in the correlation of NN estimates on Brewer derived TOC with 95% of the coincident data differing by less than 13 DU. In the second stage of development, a long time series (≥1 million records) of high frequency (~1min) NILU-UV ground-based measurements are presented as inputs to the NN model to generate high frequency TOC estimates. The advantage of the NN model is that it is not site dependent and is applicable to any NILU input data lying within the range of the training data. GOME/ERS-2, SCIAMACHY/Envisat, OMI/Aura and GOME2/MetOp-A TOC records are then used to perform a precise cross-validation analysis and comparison with the NILU TOC estimates over Thessaloniki. All 4 satellite TOC dataset are retrieved using the GOME Direct Fitting algorithm, version 3 (GODFIT_v3), for reasons of consistency. The NILU TOC estimates within ±30min of the overpass times agree well with the satellite TOC retrievals with coefficient of determination in the range 0.88≤R2≤0.90 for all sky conditions and 0.95≤R2≤0.96 for clear sky conditions. The mean fractional differences are found to be -0.67%±2.15%, -1.44%±2.25%, -2.09%±2.06% and -0.85%±2.19% for GOME, SCIAMACHY, OMI and GOME2 respectively for the clear sky cases. The near constant standard deviation (~±2.2%) across the array of sensors testifies directly to the stability of both the GODFIT_v3 algorithm and the NN model for providing coherent and robust TOC records. Furthermore, the high Pearson product moment correlation coefficients (0.94<R<0.98) testify to the strength of the linear relationship between the satellite algorithm retrievals of TOC and ground-based estimates, while biases of less than 5 DU suggest that systematic errors are low. This novel methodology contributes to the ongoing assessment of the quality and consistency of ground and space-based measurements of total ozone columns.
A compact solar occultation instrument for the UV/Visible spectral range: instrument design and performance testing

Abstract:Spectroscopic direct sun remote sensing of the atmosphere offers an essential tool for determining atmospheric trace gas concentrations. The monitoring of ozone-depleting substances, such as halogen oxides in the middle atmosphere, contributes to observing the progress in restoring the ozone layer.Here, we present a new compact solar occultation spectrometer for the UV/visible spectral range that can be mounted on stratospheric balloons such as deployed within the European HEMERA infrastructures. Due to its compactness, the instrument is suitable as a secondary payload. The instrument, consisting of a solar tracker providing direct sunlight for two grating spectrometers, is designed for deployment on a high altitude balloon to measure total bromine and iodine inventories using solar occultation and the DOAS method. All components of the setup have been chosen to withstand low temperatures (>-80&#176;C) and low pressures (>5 mbar) as expected during the flight, and to have minimal power consumption while being compact, lightweight and only cooling radiatively. To perform solar occultation measurements, the device can track the sun down to 10&#176; below its horizon.The solar tracker is based on a two-camera setup following the Camtracker [1]. One camera with a fish-eye lens (FoV 185&#176;) that observes the sky gives the sun&#180;s coarse position. The Alt-Azimuth mount projects direct sunlight onto a screen. When reaching this coarse position, the image of the second camera is used to center the solar image on the spectrometer entrance telescopes by adjusting both mirrors within a 100 Hz control loop. The tracker can reach a tracking precision of &#8804;0.05&#176; for expected perturbations of smaller than 2&#176; s-1. In lab experiments it was shown, that the tracker could handle even faster perturbations (larger than 3&#176; s-1). The sunlight is coupled into the two spectrometers via a fiber-telescope setup.Two stabilized spectrometers (Ocean Optics QE Pro Series, resolution 0.5 nm) with a wavelength range for UV (305 to 385 nm) and vis (415 to 515 nm) are assembled within an evacuated box inside a water-ice bath. The vacuum avoids vapors condensing on the CCD an it ensures a constant refractive index within the spectrometers throughout the flight. At the same time the water-ice bath acts as a thermal buffer to stabilize the temperature of both spectrometers. Stable water-ice bath temperatures were achieved for >12 hours with deviations smaller than 0.5&#176;C.Preliminary testing of the setup was conducted on a three-day stationary roof-based test campaign with nearly clear-sky conditions. Abstract:The Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) is a radiometer array covering the 30-70 GHz spectral range on-board the ESA Planck satellite, launched on May 14th, 2009 to observe the cosmic microwave background (CMB) with unprecedented precision. In this paper we describe the development and validation of a software model of the LFI pseudo-correlation receivers which enables to reproduce and predict all the main system parameters of interest as measured at each of the 44 LFI detectors. These include system total gain, noise temperature, band-pass response, non-linear response. The LFI Advanced RF Model (LARFM) has been constructed by using commercial software tools and data of each radiometer component as measured at single unit level. The LARFM has been successfully used to reproduce the LFI behavior observed during the LFI ground-test campaign. The model is an essential element in the database of LFI data processing center and will be available for any detailed study of radiometer behaviour during the survey.

Abstract:Abstract. During the EUREC4A field study, microwave radiometric measurements were performed at Barbados Cloud Observatory (BCO) and aboard RV Meteor and RV Maria S Merian in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic. We present retrieved integrated water vapor (IWV), liquid water path (LWP), and temperature and humidity profiles as a unified, quality-controlled, multi-site data set on a 3 s temporal resolution for a core period between 19 January and 14 February 2020 in which all instruments were operational. Multi-channel radiometric measurements were performed at BCO and aboard RV Meteor between 22 and 31 GHz (K-band) and from 51 to 58 GHz (V-band). Combined radar–radiometer measurements of a W-band Doppler radar with a single-channel radiometer instrument were conducted at 89 GHz aboard RV Meteor and RV Maria S Merian. We present a novel retrieval method to retrieve LWP from single-channel 89 GHz measurements, evaluate retrieved quantities with independent measurements, and analyze retrieval uncertainties by site and instrument intercomparison. Mean IWV conditions of 31.8 kg m−2 match independent radiosoundings at BCO with a root-mean-square difference of 1.1 kg m−2. Mean LWP conditions in confidently liquid cloudy, non-precipitating conditions ranged between 63.1 g m−2 at BCO and 46.8 g m−2 aboard RV Maria S Merian. Aboard the ships, 90 % of LWP was below 120 g m−2 with a 30 % uncertainty for LWP of 50 g m−2. Up to 20 % of confidently liquid cloudy profiles ranged below the LWP detection limit due to optically thin clouds. The data set comprises of processed raw data (Level 1), full quality-controlled post-processed instrument data (Level 2), a unified temporal resolution (Level 3), and a ready-to-use multi-site time series of IWV and LWP (Level 4), available to the public via AERIS (https://doi.org/10.25326/454##v2.0; Schnitt et al., 2023a). The data set complements the airborne LWP measurements conducted during EUREC4A and provides a unique benchmark tool for satellite evaluation and model–observation studies.

Abstract:Instantaneous determinations of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) over the sea from the Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) on Sentinel-3 are compared with in-situ measurements at the island of Lampedusa in the central Mediterranean Sea. Radiative transfer calculations show that the PAR measured at the island site is representative for open ocean conditions. Satellite data show a good agreement (5.2% positive bias, R 2 = 0.97) with in-situ data, in line with similar analyses for other satellite sensors. Larger satellite-in situ differences are found during summer, and the possible role of aerosols in degrading PAR estimate has been investigated by comparing AOD values measured at Lampedusa and derived by OLCI. The relative difference between OLCI and in-situ PAR appears to be negatively correlated with the relative differences between OLCI and in-situ AOD, suggesting that a more accurate determination of AOD, in particular, for cases with AOD > 0.2, mostly related to Saharan dust, may lead to improved satellite PAR estimates.

Abstract:A system of two scanning radiometers has been developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/Environmental Technology Laboratory and deployed on the NOAA R/V Ronald H. Brown during the Nauru99 cruise in the tropical western Pacific in June and July 1999. The system is composed of a high‐quality temperature sensor and two independent, vertically scanning radiometers, measuring atmospheric and oceanic emission in the microwave (MW), and infrared (IR) regions. Both radiometers measure emission from a uniformly mixed atmospheric gas: oxygen for MW (60 GHz) and carbon dioxide for IR (14.2 μm). The high atmospheric absorption at these frequencies allows one calibration point from the horizontal atmospheric view using the in situ temperature sensor measurements as a reference. The signal at all other scan angles is scaled relative to that at the horizontal, resulting in a differential technique that is independent of calibration offset. This technique provides continuous and accurate estimates of boundary layer air temperature profile and air/sea temperature difference. The main advantage of this technique is that the water skin temperature can be measured at different optical depths without disturbing the skin layer (magnitude order of microns). We first compare radiometric data collected during the experiment with simulations obtained by atmospheric and oceanic radiative transfer models. We then use statistical inversion techniques to estimate air temperature profiles from upward looking measurements, based on an a priori data set of about 1500 ship‐based radiosonde observations. For the “well‐posed” problem of air/sea temperature difference estimation, we apply a physical retrieval algorithm to the downward looking measurements, accounting for air attenuation and sea surface roughness. Then we show retrieval results and evaluate the achieved accuracy. Finally, we compare radiometric estimates with in situ measurements, discussing similarities and discrepancies.

Abstract:The air–sea exchange of ozone (O 3 ) is controlled by chemistry involving halogens, dissolved organic carbon, and sulfur in the sea surface microlayer. Calculations also indicate faster ozone photolysis at aqueous surfaces, but the role of clouds as an ozone sink is currently not well established. Fast-response ozone sensors offer opportunities to measure eddy covariance (EC) ozone fluxes in the marine boundary layer. However, intercomparisons of fast airborne O 3 sensors and EC O 3 fluxes measured on aircraft have not been conducted before. In April 2022, the Technological Innovation Into Iodine and GV Environmental Research (TI 3 GER) field campaign deployed three fast ozone sensors (gas chemiluminescence and a combination of UV absorption with coumarin chemiluminescence detection, CID) together with a fast water vapor sensor and anemometer to study iodine chemistry in the troposphere and stratosphere over Colorado and over the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii and Alaska. Here, we present an instrument comparison between the NCAR Fast O 3 instrument (FO3, gas-phase CID) and two KIT Fast AIRborne Ozone instruments (FAIRO, UV absorption and coumarin CID). The sensors have comparable precision < 0.4 % Hz −0.5 (0.15 ppbv Hz −0.5 ), and ozone volume mixing ratios (VMRs) generally agreed within 2 % over a wide range of environmental conditions: 10 < O 3 < 1000 ppbv, below detection < NO x < 7 ppbv, and 2 ppmv < H 2 O < 4 % VMR. Both instrument designs are demonstrated to be suitable for EC flux measurements and were able to detect O 3 fluxes with exchange velocities (defined as positive for upward) as slow as − 0.010 ± 0.004 cm s −1 , which is in the lower range of previously reported measurements. Additionally, we present two case studies. In one, the direction of ozone and water vapor fluxes was reversed ( vO3 = + 0.134 ± 0.005 cm s −1 ), suggesting that overhead evaporating clouds could be a strong ozone sink. Further work is needed to better understand the role of clouds as a possibly widespread sink of ozone in the remote marine boundary layer. In the second case study, vO3 values are negative (varying by a factor of 6–10 from − 0.036 ± 0.006 to − 0.003 ± 0.004 cm s −1 ), while the water vapor fluxes are consistently positive due to evaporation from the ocean surface and spatially homogeneous. This case study demonstrates that the processes governing ozone and water vapor fluxes can become decoupled and illustrates the need to elucidate possible drivers (physical, chemical, or biological) of the variability in ozone exchange velocities on fine spatial scales ( ∼ 20 km) over remote oceans.

Abstract:Molecular scattering (Rayleigh scattering) has been extensively used from the ground with lidars and from space to observe the limb, thereby deriving vertical temperature profiles between 30 and 80 km. In this study, we investigate how temperature can be measured using the new Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) sensor, aboard the Suomi NPP and NOAA-21 satellites. The OMPS consists of three instruments whose main purpose is to study the composition of the stratosphere. One of these, the Limb Profiler (LP), measures the radiance of the limb of the middle atmosphere (stratosphere and mesosphere, 12 to 90 km altitude) at wavelengths from 290 to 1020 nm. This new data set has been used with a New Simplified Radiative Transfer Model (NSRTM) to derive temperature profiles with a vertical resolution of 1 km. To validate the method, the OMPS-derived temperature profiles were compared with data from four ground-based lidars and the ERA5 and MSIS models. The results show that OMPS and the lidars are in agreement within a range of about 5 K from 30 to 80 km. Comparisons with the models also show similar results, except for ERA5 beyond 50 km. We investigated various sources of bias, such as different attenuation sources, which can produce errors of up to 120 K in the UV range, instrumental errors around 0.8 K and noise problems of up to 150 K in the visible range for OMPS. This study also highlighted the interest in developing a new miniaturised instrument that could provide real-time observation of atmospheric vertical temperature profiles using a constellation of CubeSats with our NSRTM.

Abstract:Radio frequency interference (RFI) analysis is crucial for ensuring the proper functioning of a radio telescope and the quality of astronomical observations, as human-generated interference can compromise scientific data collection. The aim of this study is to present the results of an RFI measurement campaign in the frequency range of 4–5.8 GHz, a portion of the well-known C-band, for the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT), conducted in October–November 2023. In fact, this Italian telescope, managed by the Astronomical Observatory of Cagliari (OAC), a branch of the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), was recently equipped with a new C-band receiver that operates from 4.2 GHz to 5.6 GHz. The measurements were carried out at three strategically chosen locations around the telescope using the INAF mobile laboratory, providing comprehensive coverage of all possible antenna pointing directions. The results revealed several sources of RFI, including emissions from radar, terrestrial and satellite communications, and wireless transmissions. Characterizing these sources and assessing their frequency band occupation are essential for understanding the impact of RFI on scientific observations. This work provides a significant contribution to astronomers who will use the SRT for scientific observations, offering a suggestion for the development of mitigation strategies and safeguarding the radio astronomical environment for future observational campaigns.

Abstract:The USDA ultraviolet radiation network currently includes four high-resolution spectroradiometers, located at Table Mountain, Colorado (deployed November 1998); the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Climate Research Facility in Oklahoma (October 1999); Beltsville, Maryland (November 1999); and Fort Collins, Colorado (October 2002). These spectroradiometers contain Jobin Yvon’s 1-m Czerny-Turner double additive spectrometers. The instruments measure total horizontal radiation in the 290- to 371-nm range, once every 30min, with a nominal FWHM of 0.1nm. We describe data quality control techniques as well as the data processing required to convert the raw data into calibrated irradiances. The radiometric calibration strategies using Central UV Calibration Facility FEL lamps that are directly NIST-traceable, portable field calibrators, and vicarious calibrations using data from UV multifilter rotating shadowband radiometers (MFRSRs) are discussed. Using direct-to-diffuse ratios from UV MFRSRs, we derive direct and diffuse high-resolution horizontal spectra from the collocated UV spectroradiometers of the USDA network. The direct-beam spectra can be used in a Langley regression that leads to spectroradiometric in situ calibration and to ozone column and aerosol optical depth retrievals. The high-resolution direct spectra are used to obtain the ozone column and aerosol optical depth in the 290- to 360-nm range at 0.1-nm resolution. A statistical summary of network performance is presented.

Abstract:Surface air pressure is one of the most important parameters used in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. Although it has been measured using weather stations on the ground for many decades, the numbers of measurements are sparse and concentrated on land. Few measurements from buoys and ships are available over ocean. Global measurements can only be achieved by using remote sensing from Space, which is challenging; however, a novel design using Differential Absorption Radar (DAR) can provide a potential solution. The technique relies on two facts: first the electromagnetic fields are absorbed mainly by oxygen and water vapor, and second that oxygen is well mixed. In this work we discuss a space‐borne concept, which aims at providing, over the ocean, consistent, and regular observations for determining surface air pressure from space by a design of a multi‐tone radar operating on the upper wing of the O2 absorption band with tones from 64 to 70 GHz. Simulations of radar vertical profiles based on the output of a state of‐the‐art microphysical retrievals applied to the A‐Train suite of sensors are exploited to establish the performance of such a system for surface pressure determination. In particular the identification and quantification of errors introduced by the presence of water vapor, cloud liquid water and rain water and the potential of a correction via the three‐tone method is discussed. Errors introduced by surface measurement noise and temperature profile uncertainties are discussed as well. Results show that accuracy between 2 and 5 hPa is at reach.

Abstract:Based on a recently developed all-sky forward model (σ-IASI/F2N) for the computation of spectral radiances in the range 100 to 2760 cm -1 , the paper addresses the spring onset of the Antarctica ozone hole with infrared observations from the IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounder Interferometer) satellite sounder. The Antarctica ozone hole is a cyclic event that grows in normal conditions in late August and collapses in late November/early December. Because of climate change (cooling of the stratosphere), the O 3 hole is expected to become deeper. Indeed, 2021 and 2023 have been characterized by very spatially extensive and deep ozone hole. To demonstrate that we can gain further insights into these phenomena with the help of infrared nadir viewing observations, we have developed an all-sky retrieval tool, which inverts the whole IASI infrared spectrum to simultaneously estimate thermodynamic and geophysical parameters, including ozone and nitric acid, which are key parameters in analyzing the Antarctic ozone hole. Infrared sounders acquire data day and night, unlike visible and ultraviolet sounders, which are only operational during daytime. This enables us to acquire data also during the polar night, which is a critical time for O 3 hole formation. Ice polar stratospheric clouds have been identified and fitted with our scheme. Maps of atmospheric ozone, complemented with those of nitric acid, temperature, and lower stratosphere height, have been retrieved for July, September, and October 2021 and 2023. Results are compared to those derived from TROPOMI (TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument) and OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument), showing a very good agreement. The comparison of simultaneously retrieved O 3 and HNO 3 shows that the onset of the ozone hole is associated with relevant denitrification in the Antarctica Stratosphere. For 2023, our findings also show that O 3 depletion episodes began as early as July. Although demonstrative, our analysis evidences the importance of Numerical Weather Prediction centers to assimilating all-sky infrared radiances (day, night, clear, or with ice or water clouds) to get insights into providing a more comprehensive picture of the Southern Spring ozone depletion over Antarctica.

Abstract:The Normalized Differential Spectral Attenuation (NDSA) technique was proposed years ago as an active method for measuring integrated water vapor (IWV) along a Ku/K-band radio link immersed (totally or partially) in the troposphere. The approach is of the active kind, as it relies on the transmission of a couple of sinusoidal signals, whose power is measured at the receiver, thus providing the differential attenuation measurements from which IWV estimates can be in turn derived. In 2018, a prototype instrument providing such differential attenuation measurements was completed and set up for a first measurement campaign aimed at demonstrating the NDSA method. By the end of June 2022, the instrument was profoundly modified and upgraded so that a second measurement campaign could be carried out from 1 August to 30 November 2022. The transmitter was placed on the top of Monte Gomito (44.1277°lat, 10.6434°lon, 1892 m a.s.l.) and the receiver on the roof of the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Florence (43.7985°lat, 11.2528°lon, 50 m a.s.l.). The resulting radio link length was 61.15 km. Four ground weather stations of the regional weather service were selected among those available. In this paper, we describe the upgraded instrument and present the outcomes of the new measurement campaign, whose purpose was mainly to compare the IWV estimates provided by the instrument with the ground sensor measurements of air temperature, air humidity, barometric pressure, and rainfall. In particular, we show that the temporal trends of the two IWV estimates are qualitatively consistent, and that the instrument is able to provide IWV estimates also in the presence of fog and rainfall. Conversely, a quantitative evaluation through comparison with IWV data from point weather station measurements appears challenging due to the significant spatial variability in temperature and relative humidity, even between couples of stations that are quite close to each other.

Abstract:The Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) and the Infrared Working Group of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC-IRWG) are two ground-based networks that provide the retrieved concentrations of up to 30 atmospheric trace gases, using solar absorption spectrometry. Both networks provide reference measurements for the validation of satellites and models. TCCON concentrates on long-lived greenhouse gases (GHGs) for carbon cycle studies and validation. The number of sites is limited, and the geographical coverage is uneven, covering mainly Europe and the USA. A better distribution of stations is desired to improve the representativeness of the data for various atmospheric conditions and surface conditions and to cover a large latitudinal distribution. The two successive Fiducial Reference Measurements for Greenhouse Gases European Space Agency projects (FRM4GHG and FRM4GHG2) aim at the assessment of several low-cost portable instruments for precise measurements of GHGs to complement the existing ground-based sites. Several types of low spectral resolution Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers manufactured by Bruker, namely an EM27/SUN, a Vertex70, a fiber-coupled IRCube, and a Laser Heterodyne spectro-Radiometer (LHR) developed by UK Rutherford Appleton Laboratory are the participating instruments to achieve the Fiducial Reference Measurements (FRMs) status. Intensive side-by-side measurements were performed using all four instruments next to the Bruker IFS 125HR high spectral resolution FTIR, performing measurements in the NIR (TCCON configuration) and MIR (NDACC configuration) spectral range. The remote sensing measurements were complemented by AirCore launches, which provided in situ vertical profiles of target gases traceable to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reference scale. The results of the intercomparisons are shown and discussed. Except for the EM27/SUN, all other instruments, including the reference TCCON spectrometer, needed modifications during the campaign period. The EM27/SUN and the Vertex70 provided stable and precise measurements of the target gases during the campaign with quantified small biases. As part of the FRM4GHG project, one EM27/SUN is now used as a travel standard for the verification of column-integrated GHG measurements. The extension of the Vertex70 to the MIR provides the opportunity to retrieve additional concentrations of N2O, CH4, HCHO, and OCS. These MIR data products are comparable to the retrieval results from the high-resolution IFS 125HR spectrometer as operated by the NDACC. Our studies show the potential for such types of spectrometers to be used as a travel standard for the MIR species. An enclosure system with a compact solar tracker and meteorological station has been developed to house the low spectral resolution portable FTIR systems for performing solar absorption measurements. This helps the spectrometers to be mobile and enables autonomous operation, which will help to complement the TCCON and NDACC networks by extending the observational capabilities at new sites for the observation of GHGs and additional air quality gases. The development of the retrieval software allows comparable processing of the Vertex70 type of spectra as the EM27/SUN ones, therefore bringing them under the umbrella of the COllaborative Carbon Column Observing Network (COCCON). A self-assessment following the CEOS-FRM Maturity Matrix shows that the COCCON is able to provide GHG data products of FRM quality and can be used for either short-term campaigns or long-term measurements to complement the high-resolution FTIR networks.
Validation of Ozone Monitoring Instrument UV Satellite Data Using Spectral and Broadband Surface Based Measurements at a Queensland Site

Abstract:This research reconstructed and validated the broadband UVA irradiances derived from discrete spectral irradiance data retrieved from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) satellite from 1 January to 31 December 2009. OMI data at solar noon were compared to ground-based spectral irradiances at Toowoomba (27°36' S 151°55' E), Australia, at 310, 324 and 380 nm for both cloud-free and all sky conditions. There was a strong relationship between the ground-based UV spectroradiometer data and satellite-based measurements with an R2 of 0.89 or better in each waveband for cloud-free days. The data show an overestimate of the satellite-derived spectral irradiances compared to the ground-based data. The models developed for the subtropical site data account for this overestimation and are essential for any data correlation between satellite- and ground-based measurements. Additionally, this research has compared solar noon broadband UVA irradiances evaluated with a model and the discrete satellite spectral irradiances for the solar noon values of cloud-free days to those measured with a ground-based UVA radiometer. An R2 of 0.86 was obtained confirming that for cloud-free days the broadband UVA can be evaluated from the OMI satellite spectral irradiances.
