Abstract:Recent works have shown that gels with a large amount of solvents can still exhibit a glass transition behavior with the thermomechanical properties exhibiting tremendous change over a narrow temperature region. Similar to dry polymers, the rheological behaviors of gels also show a broad distribution of relaxation times. However, so far the effects of solvents on the relaxation spectrum have rarely been studied. In this work, we first develop a viscoelastic model to relate the rheological properties of gels and the corresponding properties in the dry state. We then apply the theoretical model to analyze the complex modulus of gels measured in the small strain dynamic tests. The results show that the breadth of relaxation spectrum has been expanded by increasing the swelling ratio. The physical mechanism behind this observation needs a deep investigation in further study and also raises a significant challenge for developing constitutive models for gels.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanical responses of glassy polymers remains a grand scientific challenge for many decades, which plays a central role in the application of these materials. In this work, we have performed stress relaxation tests on a series of glassy polymers. An abnormal rate-dependent stress relaxation response is revealed, featuring as a larger stress drop and smaller quasi-steady-state stress with increasing the initial loading rate. To explore the underlying deformation mechanism, we further carry out a coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation on glassy polymers, which qualitatively demonstrates the experimental observations. The underlying physical mechanism is revealed to be that a larger initial loading rate can lead to a more-activated structure state of polymers. Based on these findings, we develop a physically-based model by introducing the effective temperature model into the shear transformation zone (STZ) theory. The effective temperature, as an internal variable, can describe the deformation-induced structural evolution of amorphous polymers. The Adam–Gibbs model is then adopted to relate the effective temperature with the transformation rates of STZ sites. Comparison with experimental results shows that the micro-mechanical model can capture the rate-dependent stress–strain relationship in the loading process as well as the abnormal stress relaxation responses. In comparison, it is challenging to rationalize this abnormal behavior based on classic viscoplastic models due to a lack of physical mechanisms. Thus, this work promotes our understanding of the origin of complex mechanical responses of glassy polymers that are strongly related to the evolution of microstructure upon deformation.

Abstract:Understanding the microscopic mechanism of the transition of glass remains one of the most challenging topics in Condensed Matter Physics. What controls the sharp slowing down of molecular motion upon approaching the glass transition temperature Tg, whether there is an underlying thermodynamic transition at some finite temperature below Tg, what the role of cooperativity and heterogeneity are, and many other questions continue to be topics of active discussions. This review focuses on the mechanisms that control the steepness of the temperature dependence of structural relaxation (fragility) in glass-forming liquids. We present a brief overview of the basic theoretical models and their experimental tests, analyzing their predictions for fragility and emphasizing the successes and failures of the models. Special attention is focused on the connection of fast dynamics on picosecond time scales to the behavior of structural relaxation on much longer time scales. A separate section discusses the specific case of polymeric glass-forming liquids, which usually have extremely high fragility. We emphasize the apparent difference between the glass transitions in polymers and small molecules. We also discuss the possible role of quantum effects in the glass transition of light molecules and highlight the recent discovery of the unusually low fragility of water. At the end, we formulate the major challenges and questions remaining in this field.

Abstract:We review recent results from computer simulation studies of polymer glasses, from chain dynamics around the glass transition temperature Tg to the mechanical behaviour below Tg. These results clearly show that modern computer simulations are able to address and give clear answers to some important issues in the field, in spite of the obvious limitations in terms of length and time scales. In the present review we discuss the cooling rate effects, and dynamic slowing down of different relaxation processes when approaching Tg for both model and chemistry-specific polymer glasses. The impact of geometric confinement on the glass transition is discussed in detail. We also show that computer simulations are very useful tools to study structure and mechanical response of glassy polymers. The influence of large deformations on mechanical behaviour of polymer glasses in general, and strain hardening effect in particular are reviewed. Finally, we suggest some directions for future research, which we believe will be soon within the capabilities of state of the art computer simulations, and correspond to problems of fundamental interest.

Abstract:By employing molecular dynamics simulations, we explore the dynamics of NPs in semiflexible ring polymer nanocomposite melts. A novel glass transition is observed for NPs in semiflexible ring polymer melts as the bending energy (K-b) of ring polymers increases. For NPs in flexible ring polymer melts (K-b = 0), NPs move in the classic diffusive behavior. However, for NPs in semiflexible ring polymer melts with large bending energy, NPs diffuse very slowly and exhibit the glassy state in which the NPs are all irreversibly caged be the neighbouring semiflexible ring polymers. This glass transition occurs well above the classical glass transition temperature at which microscopic mobility is lost, and the topological interactions of semiflexible ring polymers play an important role in this non-classical glass transition. This investigation can help us understand the nature of the glass transition in polymer systems.
Cooperative intramolecular dynamics control the chain-length-dependent glass transition in polymers

Abstract:The glass transition is a long-standing unsolved problem in materials science. For polymers, our understanding of glass-formation is particularly poor due to the added complexity of chain connectivity and flexibility; structural relaxation of polymers thus involves a complex interplay between intra- and inter-molecular cooperativity. Here we study how the glass transition temperature Tg varies with molecular weight M for different polymer chemistries and chain flexibilities. We find that Tg(M) is controlled by the average mass (or volume) per conformational degree of freedom, and that a `local' molecular relaxation (involving a few conformers) controls the larger-scale cooperative alpha relaxation responsible for Tg. We propose that dynamic facilitation where a `local' relaxation facilitates adjacent relaxations, leading to hierarchical dynamics, can explain our observations including logarithmic Tg(M) dependences. Our study provides a new understanding of molecular relaxations and the glass transition in polymers, which paves the way for predictive design of polymers based on monomer-scale metrics.

Abstract:Describing the dynamics and thermodynamics of amorphous materials near the glass transition is a major challenge in soft-matter physics and polymer engineering. The relaxation time changes many orders of magnitude as the temperature approaches the glass transition, Tg. The glass transition, in turn, depends on the cooling rate (in DSC or dilatometry experiments) and the pressure. While there are several empirical rules relating the thermal expansion, density, relaxation time, temperature, and pressure (Boyer-Spencer, Simha-Boyer, and the Casalini-Roland thermodynamical scaling), there has been no unified theoretical model linking them together. Here, we apply the principle of corresponding states within the dynamic Sanchez-Lacombe two-state, two-(time)scale (SL-TS2) theory to derive a universal polymer equation of state (EoS). The proposed EoS describes the alpha-relaxation time (dynamic EoS) and specific volume of amorphous polymers (volume EoS) using five material parameters - dynamic fragility (m), glass transition temperature, elementary relaxation time, bulk modulus, and specific volume at the glass transition point. The model is compared to experimental data for nine amorphous polymers with varying values of Tg and m, and a good qualitative and quantitative agreement is found. The new EoS could serve as a bridge to connect experimental data (measured at low cooling rates) with computer simulations (done at very high cooling rates).

Abstract:The paradigmatic view on the transformation of a supercooled liquid into a glass, so‐called vitrification or glass transition, and the subsequent time evolution of the non‐equilibrium glass, addressed as physical aging, relies on the exclusive role of the main α relaxation with super‐Arrhenius temperature dependence. The aim of the present review is to carefully scrutinize the wealth of recent experimental results, above all in polymeric glasses, showing the relevance of other relaxational mechanisms in both vitrification and physical aging. While the α relaxation bears dominant role in both phenomena in proximity of the glass transition temperature, Tg , a broad view on a much wider temperature range indicates that vitrification and physical aging are mediated by non‐α mechanisms of equilibration. This review also shows that a reduction of the typical time scale of equilibration can be achieved in glasses with large free interface, namely with reduced sample size. In this way, fast non‐α mechanisms of equilibration can be exploited to convey glasses to low energy states in experimentally feasible time scales, thereby attaining information on the existence of the so‐called "ideal glass" in small sized samples.

Abstract:With the advances in nanotechnology, the glass transition and chain relaxation behavior for polymer molecules in a confined geometry have been attracted great attentions. Due to the nano-scale effects, the molecular dynamics of polymer thin film deviates from that in the bulk, and are a function of the dimension of films (i.e. thickness). The studies of the molecular dynamic in polymer thin film are of significant importance both in term of optimizing the physical properties of polymer nanomaterials and also in the developing our understanding of the nature of glass transition for amorphous materials. In this paper, some important results in the field of the dynamics of thin polymer film are reviewed. We summarized the physical mechanisms responsible for the deviation of chain dynamic from that in bulk, and discussed the distribution of chain mobility in polymer thin film, as well, some theoretical models describing the glass transition of thin polymer film was introduced. In the end, the problems in this field and prospects in the further studies were also discussed.

Abstract:This work examines, first, the non-equilibrium character of the glassy state of polymer systems and its significance in the development of novel materials for important technological applications. Subsequently, it summarizes the essentials of the generalized lattice fluid approach for the description of this highly complex non-equilibrium behavior with an approximate and simple, yet analytically powerful formalism. The working equations are derived in a straightforward and consistent manner by clearly defining the universal and specific variables needed to describe the discussed properties. The role of the non-random distribution of molecular species and free volume in the glassy system is also examined, as is the role of strong specific interactions, such as hydrogen-bonding networks. This work also reports examples of applications in a variety of representative systems, including glass densification, retrograde vitrification, increase in glass-transition temperature in hydrogen-bonded polymer mixtures, and hysteresis phenomena in sorption–desorption from glassy polymer matrices.

Abstract:We present Molecular Dynamics simulations of the thermal glass transition in a dense model polymer liquid. We performed a comparative study of both constant volume and constant pressure cooling of the polymer melt. Great emphasis was laid on a careful equilibration of the dense polymer melt at all studied temperatures. Our model introduces competing length scales in the interaction to prevent any cristallisation tendency. In this first manuscript we we analyse the structural properties as a function of temperature and the long alpha-relaxation behaviour as observed in the dynamic structure factor and the self-diffusion of the polymer chains. The relaxation can be consistently analysed in terms of the mode coupling theory (MCT) of the glass transition. The mode coupling critical temperature and the exponent gamma, defining the power law divergence of the alpha-relaxation timescale both depend on the thermodynamic ensemble employed in the simulation.

Abstract:Over the past three decades, studies have indicated a mobile surface layer with steep gradients on glass surfaces. Among various glasses, polymers are unique because intramolecular interactions - combined with chain connectivity - can alter surface dynamics, but their fundamental role has remained elusive. By devising polymer surfaces occupied by chain loops of various penetration depths, combined with surface dissipation experiments and Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate that the intramolecular dynamic coupling along surface chains causes the sluggish bulk polymers to suppress the fast surface dynamics. Such effect leads to that accelerated segmental relaxation on polymer glass surfaces markedly slows when the surface polymers extend chain loops deeper into the film interior. The surface mobility suppression due to the intramolecular coupling reduces the magnitude of the reduction in glass transition temperature commonly observed in thin films, enabling new opportunities for tailoring polymer properties at interfaces and under confinement and producing glasses with enhanced thermal stability. The glassy materials show a few layers of molecules at the outmost surface which are in a mobile state while the molecules in the glass interior remain frozen, but manipulation of this outer layer remains challenging. Here, the authors provided a strategy to tune the mobility of the surface layer by devising polymer surfaces occupied by chain loops of various penetration depths.

Abstract:We present computer simulations of a simple bead-spring model for polymer melts with intramolecular barriers. By systematically tuning the strength of the barriers, we investigate their role on the glass transition. Dynamic observables are analyzed within the framework of the Mode Coupling Theory (MCT). Critical nonergodicity parameters, critical temperatures and dynamic exponents are obtained from consistent fits of simulation data to MCT asymptotic laws. The so-obtained MCT $\lambda$-exponent increases from standard values for fully-flexible chains to values close to the upper limit for stiff chains. In analogy with systems exhibiting higher-order MCT transitions, we suggest that the observed large $\lambda$-values arise form the interplay between two distinct mechanisms for dynamic arrest: general packing effects and polymer-specific intramolecular barriers. We compare simulation results with numerical solutions of the MCT equations for polymer systems, within the polymer reference interaction site model (PRISM) for static correlations. We verify that the approximations introduced by the PRISM are fulfilled by simulations, with the same quality for all the range of investigated barrier strength. The numerical solutions reproduce the qualitative trends of simulations for the dependence of the nonergodicity parameters and critical temperatures on the barrier strength. In particular, the increase of the barrier strength at fixed density increases the localization length and the critical temperature. However the qualitative agreement between theory and simulation breaks in the limit of stiff chains. We discuss the possible origin of this feature.
Polymer glass transition occurs at the marginal rigidity point with connectivity z*=4

Abstract:We re-examine the physical origin of the polymer glass transition from the point of view of marginal rigidity, which is achieved above a certain number of intermolecular contacts. In the case of polymer chains in a melt / poor solvent, each monomer has two neighbors bound by covalent bonds and also a number of central-force contacts modelled by the Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential. We find that when the average number of contacts per monomer (covalent and non-covalent) exceeds the critical value z*=4, the system becomes solid and the dynamics arrested - a state that we declare the glass. Coarse-grained Brownian dynamics simulations show that at sufficient strength of LJ attraction (which effectively represents the depth of quenching, or the quality of solvent) the polymer globule indeed crosses the threshold of z*=4, and does become a glass. We verify this by showing the distinction between the `liquid' polymer droplet at z<z*, which changes shape and adopts the spherical conformation in equilibrium, and the `glassy' droplet at z>z*, which retains its shape frozen at the moment of z* crossover. These results provide a robust working criterion to tell the liquid apart from the glass for the linear polymers.

Fast Vibrational Modes and Slow Heterogeneous Dynamics in Polymers and Viscous Liquids

Abstract:Many systems, including polymers and molecular liquids, when adequately cooled and/or compressed, solidify into a disordered solid, i.e., a glass. The~transition is not abrupt, featuring progressive decrease of the microscopic mobility and huge slowing down of the relaxation.} A~distinctive aspect of glass-forming materials is the microscopic dynamical heterogeneity (DH), i.e., the presence of regions with almost immobile particles coexisting with others where highly mobile ones are located. Following the first compelling evidence of a strong correlation between vibrational dynamics and ultraslow relaxation, we posed the question if the vibrational dynamics encodes predictive information on DH. Here, we review our results, drawn from molecular-dynamics numerical simulation of polymeric and molecular glass-formers, with a special focus on both the breakdown of the Stokes--Einstein relation between diffusion and viscosity, and the size of the regions with correlated displacements.

Simulation of models for the glass transition: Is there progress?

Abstract:The glass transition of supercooled fluids is a particular challenge for computer simulation, because the (longest) relaxation times increase by about 15 decades upon approaching the transition temperature T_g. Brute-force molecular dynamics simulations, as presented here for molten SiO_2 and coarse-grained bead-spring models of polymer chains, can yield very useful insight about the first few decades of this slowing down. Hence this allows to access the temperature range around T_c of the so-called mode coupling theory, whereas the dynamics around the experimental glass transition is completely out of reach. While methods such as ``parallel tempering'' improve the situation somewhat, a method that allows to span a significant part of the region T_g\leq T\leq T_c is still lacking. Only for abstract models such as the infinite range 10-state Potts glass with a few hundred spins this region can be explored. However this model suffers from very strong finite size effects thus making it difficult to extrapolate the results obtained for the finite system sizes to the thermodynamic limit. For the case of polymer melts, two different strategies to use lattice models instead of continuum models are discussed: In the first approach, a mapping of an atomistically realistic model of polyethylene to the bond fluctuation model with suitable effective potentials and a temperature-dependent time rescaling factor is attempted. In the second approach, devoted to a test of the entropy theory, moves that are artificial but which lead to a faster relaxation (``slithering snake'' algorithm) are used, to get at least static properties at somewhat lower temperatures than possible with a ``realistic'' dynamics. The merits and shortcomings of all these approaches are discussed.

Abstract:The glass transition in binary mixtures of star polymers is studied by mode coupling theory and extensive molecular dynamics computer simulations. In particular, we have explored vitrification in the parameter space of size asymmetry δ and concentration ρ2 of the small star polymers at fixed concentration of the large ones. Depending on the choice of parameters, three different glassy states are identified: a single glass of big polymers at low δ and low ρ2, a double glass at high δ and low ρ2, and a novel double glass at high ρ2 and high δ which is characterized by a strong localization of the small particles. At low δ and high ρ2 there is a competition between vitrification and phase separation. Centered in the (δ, ρ2)-plane, a liquid lake shows up revealing reentrant glass formation. We compare the behavior of the dynamical density correlators with the predictions of the theory and find remarkable agreement between the two.

Abstract:We provide a perspective on polymer glass formation, with an emphasis on models in which the fluid entropy and collective particle motion dominate the theoretical description and data analysis. We first discuss the dynamics of liquids in the high temperature Arrhenius regime, where transition state theory is formally applicable. We then summarize the evolution of the entropy theory from a qualitative framework for organizing and interpreting temperature-dependent viscosity data by Kauzmann to the formulation of a hypothetical `ideal thermodynamic glass transition' by Gibbs and DiMarzio, followed by seminal measurements linking entropy and relaxation by Bestul and Chang and the Adam-Gibbs (AG) model of glass formation rationalizing the observations of Bestul and Chang. These developments laid the groundwork for the generalized entropy theory (GET), which merges an improved lattice model of polymer thermodynamics accounting for molecular structural details and enabling the analytic calculation of the configurational entropy with the AG model, giving rise to a highly predictive model of the segmental structural relaxation time of polymeric glass-forming liquids. The development of the GET has occurred in parallel with the string model of glass formation in which concrete realizations of the cooperatively rearranging regions are identified and quantified for a wide range of polymeric and other glass-forming materials. The string model has shown that many of the assumptions of AG are well supported by simulations, while others are certainly not, giving rise to an entropy theory of glass formation that is largely in accord with the GET. As the GET and string models continue to be refined, these models progressively grow into a more unified framework, and this Perspective reviews the present status of development of this promising approach to the dynamics of polymeric glass-forming liquids.
Insight into properties of sizable glass former from volumetric measurements

Abstract:Sizable glass formers feature numerous unique properties and potential applications, but many questions regarding their glass transition dynamics have not been resolved yet. Here, we have analyzed structural relaxation times measured as a function of temperature and pressure in combination with the equation of state obtained from pressure–volume–temperature measurements. Despite evidence from previous dielectric studies indicating a remarkable sensitivity of supercooled dynamics to compression, and contrary to intuition, our results demonstrated the proof for the almost equivalent importance of thermal energy and free volume fluctuations in controlling reorientation dynamics of sizable molecules. The found scaling exponent γ = 3.0 and Ev/Ep ratio of 0.6 were typical for glass-forming materials with relaxation dynamics determined by both effects with a minor advantage of thermal fluctuations involvement. It shows that the high values of key parameters characterizing the sensitivity of the glass transition dynamics to pressure changes, i.e., activation volume ΔV and dTg/dP, are not a valid premise for a remarkable contribution of volume to glass transition dynamics.

Abstract:Strong changes in bulk properties, such as modulus and viscosity, are observed near the glass transition temperature, Tg, of amorphous materials. For more than a century, intense efforts have been made to define a microscopic origin for these macroscopic changes in properties. Using transition state theory (TST), we delve into the atomic/molecular level picture of how microscopic localized unit relaxations, or "cage rattles," evolve to macroscopic structural relaxations above Tg. Unit motion is broken down into two populations: (1) simultaneous rearrangement occurs among a critical number of units, nα, which ranges from 1 to 4, allowing a systematic classification of glass formers, GFs, that is compared to fragility; and (2) near Tg, adjacent units provide additional free volume for rearrangement, not simultaneously, but within the "primitive" lifetime, τ1, of one unit rattling in its cage. Relaxation maps illustrate how Johari-Goldstein β-relaxations stem from the rattle of nα units. We analyzed a wide variety of glassy materials and materials with a glassy response using literature data. Our four-parameter equation fits "strong" and "weak" GFs over the entire range of temperatures and also extends to other glassy systems, such as ion-transporting polymers and ferroelectric relaxors. The role of activation entropy in boosting preexponential factors to high "unphysical" apparent frequencies is discussed. Enthalpy-entropy compensation is clearly illustrated using the TST approach.
