Abstract:Introduction: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is a major global public health issue, affecting millions of people annually. University students are among the risk groups in the community because of their high-risk behaviors. Few studies have been conducted on HIV/AIDS preventive behaviors and associated factors among university students. Therefore, focusing on these target populations is crucial because it will help university managers and different stakeholders be informed about the burden of the problem and take different measures to halt the distribution of the infection. Objective: To assess the predictors of HIV/AIDS preventive behaviors among undergraduate Health Science University students in Northwest Ethiopia in 2022. Methods: This study used an institution-based cross-sectional design with a single-population proportion formula, and participants were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were entered into Epi Data version 4.6.0.2 and exported to SPSS version 26 for cleaning and analysis, and the results were presented using text, graphs, pie charts, percentages, and frequencies. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used, and variables with a p-value of ≤0.25 in the bivariate analysis were entered into the multivariable analysis. A p-value of less than or equal to 0.05 in the multivariable analysis was considered statistically significant. Result: Out of 287 study participants, 284 of them responded completely, with a response rate of 99.0 %. Among the total respondents, 42.3 % (95 % CI: 37.7, 47.8) of the participants had poor HIV/AIDS preventive behavior. Younger age (AOR: 3.05; 95 % CI (1.243, 7.496)), low perceived susceptibility (AOR: 2.12; 95 % CI (1.179, 3.809), low perceived severity (AOR: 3.00; 95 % CI (1.636, 5.509)), high perceived barriers (AOR: 2.78; 95 % CI (1.487, 5.202)), and having poor HIV/AIDS preventive knowledge (AOR: 3.87; 95 % CI (2.170, 6.919)) were significantly associated with poor HIV/AIDS preventive behaviors. Conclusion: The HIV/AIDS preventive behavior of participants in this study was poor. Young age, low perceived susceptibility, low perceived severity, high perceived barriers, and poor HIV/AIDS preventive knowledge were predictors of poor HIV/AIDS preventive behavior. It is better to design strategies and programs by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, university top managers, and other stakeholders to provide appropriate information and focus on behavioral changes in vulnerable population groups.
Risky sexual behavior and associated factors among university students in Ethiopia: a cross-sectional national survey

Abstract:Background: Risky sexual behavior (RSB) is one of the major youth sexual and reproductive health problems globally, including in Ethiopia. RSB among youth increases the risk of HIV infection, other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), unintended pregnancy, and unsafe abortion. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine RSB and its associated factors among university students in Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was employed in six randomly selected public universities in Ethiopia from August 2021 to February 2022. A stratified two-stage sampling technique was applied to reach the required number of study participants, and a structured self-administered questionnaire was used. RSB was defined as having had sexual relationships with more than one partner and using condoms with a new sexual partner irregularly or not at all in the last 12 months. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify factors associated with RSB among those participants who were sexually active. Results: The prevalence of RSB among those who had had sexual intercourse in the last 12 months (n = 523) was 19.5% (n = 102). One hundred forty-four (29.9%) students had multiple sexual partners, and 325 (69.3%) students did not always use condoms with a new sexual partner. Adjusted odds ratios (AOR) showed that those students aged 21-24 years had lower odds of RSB than those aged above 25 years AOR 0.18 (95% CI 0.03-0.98). The adjusted odds of RSB were 6.7 times higher (95% CI 1.26-35.30) among students who started sex at the age of 10-17 years than those who started sex at 21 years and above and 3.9 times higher (95% CI 1.33-11.39) among students who had experienced emotional violence. Conclusion: RSB continues to be a problem among university students in Ethiopia. Those students who started sex at an early age and those who experienced emotional violence were more likely to engage in RSB. Therefore, universities in Ethiopia should implement strategies such as RSB targeted health education programs that consider early sexual debut, experiences of emotional violence, and safe sexual practices.

Abstract:Existing evidence indicates that South African university students have low utilisation of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT). A cross-sectional survey was conducted to determine the utilisation of HIV VCT among undergraduate students in the School of Healthcare Sciences. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data through Google Forms. The results are presented through descriptions and percentages and illustrated in tables. Out of 389 undergraduate students, only 324 completed the questionnaire. The majority (97.2%) were aware of the health centre on campus, while only (74.7%) knew about the HIV VCT services offered on campus. Despite the awareness, many (36.7%) do not utilise the campus HIV VCT services, and some (9.6%) have never tested for HIV. There was an association between awareness of Voluntary Counselling and Testing of HIV services offered at the campus health and wellness centre and utilisation of HIV Voluntary Counselling and Testing at (<0.001). Therefore, it is imperative to urgently escalate the level of HIV/AIDS education in higher institutions of learning and emphasise the mounting danger of HIV infection and the immense importance of regular HIV testing. The findings of this study could serve as a foundation for creating HIV prevention and control programmes for youth, particularly in higher education institutions.

Behavioral Response to HIV/AIDS Prevention Messages Among Students in Selected Universities of Amhara Region, Northwest Ethiopia: An Extended Parallel Process Model

Abstract:Background: HIV/AIDS is a global pandemic. Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for two-thirds of the newly HIV-infected cases in the world. Similarly, the prevalence of HIV infections among Ethiopian university students has also increased as HIV prevention was not sufficiently prioritized. In order to decrease the surge of the HIV pandemic, prevention messages that encourage individuals to reduce sexual and risk behaviors still remain a key intervention strategy. Besides this, the behavioral response to HIV prevention messages among Ethiopian universities is not well studied. Objective: To assess students' behavioral response to HIV/AIDS prevention messages in selected universities of the Amhara region using an extended parallel process model (EPPM), in 2019. Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was employed among 423 eligible students from January to February, 2019 using a stratified sampling technique. The dependent variable is response to HIV/AIDS prevention messages (danger control and fear control) which is addressed by EPPM. The model explains the components of threat (perceived susceptibility and perceived severity) and efficacy (response efficacy and self-efficacy). Subtracting wings of threat component score from efficacy wings score gives the critical value. If the critical value had positive scores, it showed responses of danger control; if the critical value was negative, it showed response of fear control. A logistic regression model was fitted to assess the association between the dependent and independent variables. Results: The response rate of this study was 94.6%. Among 400 respondents, 263 (65.8%; 95%CI: 61-70) of them were in the danger control response whereas 137 (34.2%; 95%CI: 30- 39) were in fear control response. Moreover, 200 (50%) of the participants had adequate knowledge and 180 (45%) had a favorable attitude towards HIV/AIDS prevention messages. Danger control response for HIV prevention messages was higher among first-year students (AOR=5.5; 95%CI: 1.5-19) and third-year students (AOR=3.9; 95%CI: 2-14) compared with fifth-year students. Similarly, those students who reside on the campus were 60% times less likely to develop danger control when compared with students who live with their family (AOR=0.4; 95%CI: 0.2-0.9). Besides this, students who had adequate knowledge (AOR=2.6; 95%CI: 1.5-4.5) and students who receive fear-inducer messages (AOR=4.5; 95%CI: 3-25] were more likely to develop danger control responses. Conclusion and recommendation: Nearly two-thirds of the participants were in the danger control response. Year of study, with whom students currently live, type of message they received, and the knowledge level of respondents were the factors associated with students' response to HIV/AIDS prevention messages. Therefore, the messages must aim at enhancing threat component perception with appropriate efficacy messages to control danger and promote behavioral change.

It shows inadequate HIV knowledge - especially on HIV treatment, self-testing, and post-exposure prophylaxis - among college students. A significant gap exists between knowledge and behavior as indicated by the low condom use rate despite a high knowledge level.What are the implications for public health practice?:Findings suggest priorities for future HIV education and awareness creation of existing services. A low condom use rate at sexual debut suggests that HIV prevention education should start early.

Abstract:Background: Young adults such as university students are considered to be a key population for HIV-prevention efforts. This study aimed to determine the perceptions, practices and needs of undergraduate medical students regarding HIV-prevention measures available on campus. Methods: The research design was descriptive cross-sectional. Data were collected using an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire distributed to all 745 undergraduate medical students in the School of Clinical Medicine, University of the Free State, South Africa, of whom 470 responded (63.1%). Results: Almost half (45.5%) of all respondents across the five academic years had received information about available HIV-prevention measures on campus. Most reported that information had been received during lectures (59.7%) and only 24.2% from the local health clinic on campus. The findings also revealed that 14.2% of students had used at least one prevention measure in the past, while the majority of students (70.2%) used abstinence as an HIV-prevention measure. A large percentage of all the students (47.6%) had been tested for HIV before the start of the study. Two-thirds (67%) of students indicated that the current HIV-prevention services on campus were not sufficient. Conclusion: Medical students received HIV-prevention information as part of their curriculum but this was deemed not to be sufficient. This study suggests that tertiary education institutions should evaluate the effectiveness of strategies currently in place for the distribution and awareness of HIV-prevention measures and sexual health issues affecting students, using a student-centred approach.
Condom perception and prevention of HIV/AIDS infection in Cameroon: appraisal of knowledge, attitudes and practices among level one students of the University of Dschang

Abstract:Background: With the decreasing HIV epidemiology in Cameroon (5.5% in 2004 to 4.3% in 2011), HIV/AIDS remains a major public health concern, affecting mostly the sexually active population, among which the young University students represent an important target. Since sexual intercourses represent about 90% of HIV transmission, understanding the sexual behaviors of youth could relevantly optimize the design of HIV prevention strategies, through updated and adapted communication strategies for healthy sexual behavioral changes. Methodology: A qualitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in November 2010, among 518 newly registered students in the various faculties of the University of Dschang, Cameroon. In order to evaluate Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) toward HIV/AIDS prevention among the study participants, a structured questionnaire was administered to each participant, on the basic knowledge about HIV/AIDS and condoms. Data analysis was performed using Epi Info version 3.5.0 software. Results: The mean age of participants was 20 years, with a slight female predominance (52%). 98.6% of students voted familiar with the theme "condom", with 88.9% giving a satisfactory definition. However, 41.1% do not know the appropriate transmission route of HIV, while 5.4% do not master the correct use of condom; with up to 75.7% being aware of the female condom existence. Although 97.8% of students consider the proper use of condoms as an effective HIV preventive tool, up to 34.5% of them fail to use condoms during sexual intercourses and 69% were not in favor of the use of female condom, mainly due to a decreasing sexual pleasure. Conclusion: Despite the existing sensitization campaigns, the perception of condoms is still very poor among young Cameroonian academics; with the non-systematic use of condoms being the major setback. The lack of familiarity to female condom, both among female and male, would also be a contributing drawback. These major sexual behavioral risk factors to HIV infection appear as key points to address during the campaigns to ensure owning of healthy sexual habits, a leading component to reduce HIV incidence among young Cameroonian/Africans.
Explaining utilization of HIV prevention and testing services among university students in Mozambique: results from a mixed methods study

Abstract:Abstract Background In Mozambique, HIV infection disproportionately affects young adults, particularly women. Despite awareness and knowledge of HIV transmission, many university students have not received HIV testing and continue to engage in high-risk sexual behaviors, including inconsistent condom use. Further understanding of patterns of engagement with HIV prevention and testing is key to reducing HIV transmission in this at-risk population. Methods This study used a sequential mixed methods approach to examine patterns of engagement and perceptions of HIV prevention and testing services among higher education students in Mozambique. Survey data were collected from a representative sample of 501 students from Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) in Maputo, Mozambique to assess the primary outcomes of 1) HIV testing within the last 12 months; and 2) condom use during last sexual encounter. We employed univariate and multivariate regression models. The survey was followed by qualitative interviews with 70 survey participants which were analyzed using an inductive, content-focused analysis to further explain and contextualize survey findings. Results Over 85% of students reported to be sexually active, among these 74% reported condom use during their last sexual encounter, and 64.2% reported an HIV test within the past 12 months. Females were more likely to have had HIV testing in the past 12 months in comparison to their male peers (aOR 1.82, 95% CI 1.11, 2.99), but were half as likely to have used a condom with their last sexual encounter (aOR 0.52, 95% CI 0.33, 0.83), when controlling for other factors. Qualitative data suggests that these discrepancies may be explained by differential perceptions in risk and trust/mistrust, with women being more concerned about infidelity by their male partner(s) and assuming more responsibility for knowing their own serostatus. Women were also subject to negative stereotypes for possessing condoms in comparison to men, which could explain lower propensity for use. Conclusion Given gendered differences in uptake of condom use and HIV testing, and perceived HIV risk, interventions tailored specifically to male and female students may impact engagement with HIV prevention and testing and empower informed choices about sexual behaviors.

Abstract:Background . Young people are challenged with sexual and reproductive health (SRH) problems due to limited access to services and information. It contributes a high burden of sexually transmitted disease, unsafe abortion, and premature mortality, especially in low-income countries like Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed at assessing the SRH service utilization and associated factors among college students at West Arsi Zone in Oromia region, Ethiopia. Methods . Institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 519 randomly selected college students from January 01, 2019, up to April 30, 2019. Data were collected through self-administered pretested questionnaires. Data entry and analysis for descriptive and logistic regression models were performed by using SPSS (version 23). The result was declared as statistically significant at p < 0.05. Results . The utilization of at least one SRH service in the last twelve months was seen in 304 (58.6%) students. Mainly information and counseling (81.3%), voluntary testing and counseling for HIV (80.6%), condom service (37.2%), pregnancy test (35.5%), family planning services (33.2%), and abortion care services (26.0%) were most frequently utilized. The students’ aged between 20 and 24 years [AOR = 2.05, 95% CI: 1.38–3.06], female students [AOR = 1.92, 95% CI: 1.30–2.82], those not living with family [AOR = 1.54, 95% CI: 1.05–2.26], those who discussed about SRH with family/friends [AOR = 1.92, 95% CI: 1.31–2.82], and those who participated in school clubs [AOR = 1.75, 95% CI: 1.19, 2.58] more frequently used SRH service compared with their counterparts. Conclusions . The utilization of SRH services was low when compared with other studies and needs improvements to tackle RH-related problems. It requires pertinent health education and the SRH club at higher educational institutions is crucial.
Social determinants of HIV infection, hotspot areas and subpopulation groups in Ethiopia: evidence from the National Demographic and Health Survey in 2011

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: This study identifies social determinants of HIV infection, hotspot areas and subpopulation groups in Ethiopia.DESIGN: The study used data from the 2011 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS). Sample blood tests from the finger pricks collected on filter paper cards were labelled with a barcode unique to each respondent. Spatial scan statistics and geographic information system tools were used to map hotspot areas of HIV prevalence. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify social determinants of HIV infection.POPULATION: A total of 30,625 adults (16,515 women and 14,110 men) were included from 11 administrative states of Ethiopia.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Laboratory-confirmed HIV serostatus is the main outcome variable.RESULTS: HIV prevalence reached 10-21% in the central, eastern and western geographic clusters of Ethiopia. Multivariable analysis showed that individuals who were in the middle, richer and richest wealth quintiles had increased odds of having HIV over those in the poorest quintile. Adults who had primary, secondary and higher educational levels had higher odds of being HIV positive than non-educated individuals. The odds of having HIV were higher among adults who had multiple lifetime sexual partners than those with a single partner. An increasing odds of HIV infection were observed among adults in the age groups of 25-29, 30-34, 35-39 and 40-45 years compared with adults in the age group of 45-49 years. Merchants had higher odds of being HIV positive than those who were not employed. The odds of having HIV were higher among urban residents and females than among rural residents and males, respectively.CONCLUSIONS: This study found statistically significant HIV concentrations in administrative zones of central, eastern and western Ethiopia. Geospatial monitoring and targeting of prevention strategies for specific population groups is recommended.

Factors Associated with HIV Testing among Male Students Who Have Engaged in Sexual Behaviour in Zhejiang Province, China

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing, identify factors associated with HIV testing among male students who have engaged in sexual behaviour in Zhejiang province, and provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of HIV infection on campus. Methods: Stratified cluster random sampling analysis was performed, which included general characteristics, sexual attitudes, sexual behaviours, information on HIV testing, and self-risk assessment for HIV infection. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the influencing factors. Results: Among 2734 male students who have engaged in sexual behaviour, 319 (11.7%) had undergone HIV antibody testing in the previous year. The results of multivariate analysis demonstrated that the participants who were in the junior grade level (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.59, 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 1.10-2.30) exhibited acceptance to male homosexual behaviour (AOR = 1.73, 95% CI: 1.19-2.52), had been exposed to testing publicity in the previous year (AOR = 1.51, 95% CI: 1.06-2.15), had been exposed to self-risk assessment for HIV infection (AOR = 2.66, 95% CI: 1.99-3.55), had male or bisexual partners (AOR = 1.60, 95% CI: 1.05-2.46), had a score for the scale indicating awareness of different testing methods between 2 and 5 (AOR = 2.19, 95% CI: 1.51-3.16) or greater than 6 (AOR = 1.49, 95% CI: 1.01-2.66), and had a score for the scale indicating knowledge of different testing facilities between 3 and 5 (AOR = 1.63, 95% CI: 1.00-2.66) were inclined to engage in HIV testing. Conclusions: In this study, the proportion of HIV-testing among male students who have engaged in sexual behaviour was low. This study revealed that students who exhibited acceptance to male homosexual behaviours had been exposed to publicity for HIV testing or a self-risk assessment for HIV infection which were more inclined to engage in HIV testing. Our study underscores the urgent need to enhance educational interventions concerning HIV risks and warnings as part of the health education curriculum on campus. The graveness of the AIDS epidemic among students necessitates this emphasis. Moreover, we recommend deploying condom-dispensing machines or HIV testing facilities across the campus for easy access to preventive and testing services for HIV.

Abstract:Introduction: There has been a rising trend in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases globally as well as regionally. To combat the rising cases, it is very crucial to understand the perception of knowledge and attitude among the adolescent age group, as they constitute a majority of the population in India. The adolescent age group is quite vulnerable; hence, special attention has to be given to this particular age group to prevent them from acquiring high-risk behaviours. The Government of India initiated the Adolescent Education Programme to help adolescents cultivate a positive attitude and learn life skills to live a better and dignified life. Educational institutions have a significant role in imparting effective sex education to adolescents. This programme focuses on making the students aware of the dangers, stigma, and discrimination associated with HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) as well as modes of transmission of HIV/AIDS, helping them to acquire the necessary life skills to enable them to avoid risky situations and to develop healthy and responsible behaviour. The study aims to assess the knowledge and attitude about HIV/AIDS among adolescent students aged 15-19 years and help them achieve a healthy attitude and responsible behaviour towards HIV/AIDS. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the educational institutions of Kamrup (Metro), Assam, catering to the adolescent age group of 15-19 years for two months, beginning on March 15, 2024, and ending on May 15, 2024. Simple random sampling was done to select seven schools, and students were selected via systematic random sampling. The knowledge and attitude about HIV were assessed using a self-designed questionnaire that was pilot-tested; Cronbach's alpha was used to check the internal consistency of the questionnaire; and content validation was done by a group of four experts on the subject matter. The survey questionnaire was administered to the participants in their classrooms after obtaining prior permission from the school authorities. Fisher's exact test and Chi-square tests were done to test the associations, taking a p-value <0.05 as statistically significant. A binary logistic regression model was put up to show the influence of certain socio-demographic variables on knowledge and attitude about HIV/AIDS, taking a p-value <0.05 as statistically significant. A two-factor analysis of variance with measurement repetition was also performed. Results: The majority, 165 (52.5%) of the participants, had good knowledge and attitudes regarding HIV/AIDS. The socio-demographic variables such as age, institution, grade, and religion were significantly associated with knowledge and attitude about HIV/AIDS (p-value <0.05). Regarding sources of knowledge about HIV/AIDS, the majority, 178 (56.7%) of the participants, mentioned it being taught in school or college as a part of the curriculum. Conclusion: It is critical to address the current lack of information and unfavourable attitudes regarding HIV/AIDS among adolescents through school-based health programmes. This should be accomplished through proactive campaigns by educators, community leaders, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other groups in partnership with the government.

Abstract:Background. Human immunodeficiency virus-positive status disclosure is the process of informing one’s HIV-positive status to others. It is the base for accessing care and treatment programs, attaining psychosocial support, reducing stigma, adhering to treatment, and promoting safer health. Even though different strategies were done in Ethiopia to increase the magnitude of HIV status disclosure among HIV-positive patients, the magnitude is still low. The magnitude of HIV-positive status disclosure was not assessed yet after initiation of the new strategy (test and treat strategy). The aim of this study is to assess the magnitude and factors associated with HIV-positive status disclosure among HIV-positive adults attending antiretroviral therapy clinic at the public health facilities of Butajira town. Methods. Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted at public health facilities of Butajira town. A total of 414 study participants were selected by systematic random sampling technique. Data were collected by using pretested interviewer-administered semistructured questionnaire. The collected data were entered into EpiData3.1 and exported to SPSS version 23. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with HIV-positive status disclosure. The strength of association was assessed by crude odds ratio and adjusted odds ratio for bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis, respectively. Statistically significance was declared at p value <0.05 and 95% CI. Results. The magnitude of HIV-positive status disclosure was 90%. Discussing about safer sex (AOR: 3.5; 95% CI: 1.3, 9.4), viral load suppression (AOR: 4; 95% CI: 1.5, 10.1), having good ART adherence (AOR: 6; 95% CI: 2.4, 14.0), receiving counseling (AOR: 2.5; 95% CI: 1.01, 6.3), and perceiving stigma (AOR: 0.25; 95% CI: 0.09, 0.60) were the independent factors associated with HIV-positive status disclosure. Conclusion. Although the majority of the participants (90%) of them disclosed their HIV-positive status, lack of disclosure by few people can tackle HIV prevention and control programs. Health programs could improve disclosure of HIV-positive status by providing counseling service, strengthening adherence of antiretroviral therapy, suppressing viral load, and avoiding (reducing) stigma on HIV-positive patients by their community.
Willingness toward voluntary counseling and testing and associated factors among tuberculosis infected patients at public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Abstract:Background: Voluntary counseling and testing for HIV has proven to be a highly effective and cost-efficient approach in many locations, yielding excellent results. It serves as a gateway to a range of HIV-related services, including the provision of antiretroviral drugs. Therefore, this study was aimed to assess the willingness toward VCT and associated factors among TB infected patients at Public Hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; 2023. Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was undertaken at public hospitals in Addis Ababa from 1st to 30th of March 2023 with 235 participants using systematic random sampling. Trained data collectors employed a pretested data extraction tool for information gathering. Variables with p-value less than 0.05 in the multivariable logistic regression were considered statistically significant. Results: The prevalence of willingness toward VCT among TB infected patients was (78.3, 95%CI: 72.8, 83.4). Individuals with a primary education level (AOR: 6.32; 95%CI: 1.65, 24.25), government employees (AOR: 5.85; 95%CI: 1.78, 19.22) and private employees (AOR: 3.35; 95%CI: 1.12, 10.01), good knowledge of VCT (AOR: 3.12; 95%CI: 1.36, 7.16), perceived a higher risk (AOR: 6.58; 95%CI: 2.44, 17.73) and perceived stigma (AOR: 14.95; 95%CI: 4.98, 44.91) were factors associated with willingness toward VCT. Conclusion: The proportion of Tuberculosis infected patients expressing willingness toward Voluntary Counseling and Testing in this study was higher than in previous studies, it falls below the UNAIDS target of 90% of people knowing their HIV status. Notably, factors such as level of education, occupation, knowledge, perceived risk, and perceived stigma emerged as independent factors significantly associated with the willingness of TB-infected patients to undergo VCT. These findings underscore the importance of considering socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge levels, and psychosocial factors in designing strategies to enhance VCT acceptance among TB-infected individuals.

Abstract:Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection continues to pose a significant challenge for young students in China, with most infections resulting from risky sexual behaviors. Transmitting HIV-related knowledge through various knowledge accesses is found to be critical in preventing risky sexual behaviors. Different HIV-related information sources exhibit their unique characteristics, assigning different labels to the nature of information that affects young adults' perception of HIV and sexual behaviors. This study aimed to examine the relationship between various knowledge accesses and risky behaviors, analyzing the mediating effects of HIV-related knowledge, which are expected to provide evidence for more effective HIV knowledge dissemination and the reduction of risky behaviors among youth. A questionnaire on HIV-related knowledge and behavior of young students was used to conduct the online survey. Knowledge access included school education, mass communication, and interpersonal communication. HIV-related knowledge was categorized into general and prevention knowledge. Risky behavior was defined as having multiple sexual partners or engaging in unprotected sex. Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between knowledge accesses, HIV-related knowledge and risky behaviors. Multiple mediation models constructed by Process4.1 program were conducted to determine whether the levels of HIV-related knowledge mediated the relationship between knowledge access and risky behavior. A total of 20,602 young adult respondents participated in the survey, with 9,541 males (46.3%) and 11,061 females (53.7%), averaging 20.14±1.91 years. Mass communication reached 19,030 (92.37%) students; 17,949 (87.12%) participants acquired HIV-related knowledge from school education; 11,274 (54.72%) students accessed knowledge through interpersonal communication. Among the 2,423 students who had sex, 363 (14.98%) had multiple sexual partners and 830 (34.26%) engaged in unprotected sex. School education (OR=0.6, 95%Cl=0.46-0.78), mass communication (OR=0.64, 95%Cl=0.47-0.87) and HIV prevention knowledge (OR=0.79, 95%Cl=0.69-0.9) were negatively associated with multiple sexual partners, while interpersonal communication (OR=1.41, 95%Cl=1.13-1.75) was positively associated. School education (OR=0.75, 95%Cl=0.64-0.91) and HIV prevention knowledge (OR=0.81, 95%Cl=0.73-0.89) were negatively correlated with unprotected sexual behaviors, while interpersonal communication (OR=1.27, 95%Cl=1.09-1.46) and general HIV knowledge (OR=1.17, 95%Cl=1.08-1.28) were significantly positively correlated. The results of the multiple mediation models revealed that knowledge accesses had indirect effects on risky behaviors through prevention knowledge and general knowledge. School education had opposing indirect effects of -0.023 and 0.023 through prevention and general knowledge, leading to a non-significant overall indirect effect. Mass communication showed indirect effects of -0.044 and 0.012, while interpersonal communication demonstrated indirect effects of 0.007 and 0.005 through the same pathways. Students who acquire HIV-related knowledge from school education and mass media are less likely to engage in risky behaviors, compared to those who acquire it through interpersonal communication. We should fully leverage the advantages of school education and mass communication, and an emphasis should be placed on prevention knowledge to promote changes in risky behavior. Knowledge access primarily influences risky behaviors by shaping cultural values and behavioral norms, rather than solely transmitting information. To effectively reduce risky behaviors through knowledge enhancement, non-mandatory, voluntary educational approaches are recommended.

Abstract:Background: clinical training is a part of curriculum for medical campus students, where there is a chance of exposure to HIV infection. Hence, this study was conducted to assess their knowledge, attitude and perception towards HIV/AIDS. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the medical campus, University of Khartoum between December 2017 and January 2018.designed closed-ended questionnaire (25items) consisting of socio demographic details , General knowledge about HIV/AIDS, medical campus students perception towards the possible causes of HIV infection , medical campus students attitude towards HIV/AIDS patients used to collect data from medical students. Results: it was found that the means and standard deviation of the total knowledge, attitude and perception score towards HIV/AIDS in general were 15.45. which was categorized fair ( reference ranging from 13 to 18). the total knowledge, attitude and perception was significantly associated with the academic year (p=0.000), but no association was found between the attitude score and the academic year (p = 0.620). Conclusion: The overall rate of knowledge and attitude about HIV/AIDS among medical campus students of Khartoum University was acceptable. However, appreciated number of the students have had a negative attitude towards HIV/AIDS patient.

HIV preventive practice and its associated factors among street dwellers in Ethiopia: Application of health belief model

Abstract:Street dwelling is the use of public space as a place of residence and nourishment for children, adolescents, and young people, revealing a complex and multifactorial situation. Moreover, homelessness facilitates HIV transmission and its progression due to the risky lifestyle of individuals. To the best of our knowledge, there is no study conducted in the study area on HIV preventive practices among street dwellers. The aim of this study was to assess HIV prevention practices and associated factors among street dwellers. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Bahir Dar City from March 12, 2023 to April 30, 2023. By using the simple random sampling technique, 424 street dwellers were recruited. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression were used for analysis. The magnitude of HIV preventive practice among street dwellers was 35.9%. Being male (AOR = 0.23, 95% CI: 0.10, 0.55), educational status (AOR = 7.53, 95% CI: 2.20, 25.6), practice of sex to earn money (AOR = 0.18, 95% CI: 0.08, 0.44), good knowledge about HIV preventive practice (AOR = 2.83, 95% CI: 1.46, 5.49), perceived susceptibility for HIV (AOR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.81, 0.99), and perceived benefit of using HIV preventive practice (AOR = 1.09, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.17), were factors associated with HIV preventive practice. The magnitude of HIV preventive practice was low. Being male, the ability to read and write, the practice of sex to earn money, good knowledge about HIV preventive practice, perceived susceptibility to HIV, and the perceived benefit of using HIV preventive practice were significantly associated with HIV preventive practice. Therefore, responsible organizations, both governmental and non-governmental, should design inclusive strategies to improve HIV preventive practice among street dwellers by focusing on regular demand creation activities, awareness creation about HIV preventive practice, and sustainable condom distribution in the city.

Abstract:Background: Evidence have showed that HIV prevalence among young people especially college students have increased disproportionately. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is one of the most effective ways to prevent HIV, which is vital for college students with sexual experiences who have sexual risks. Objective: / Methods: An institutional based cross-sectional study design was used to collect data by an electronic questionnaire from college students in five colleges located in Zhejiang Province. A total of 21,962 college students were investigated, of which 2,605 with sexual experiences were incorporated in the data analysis with the following information: social-demographic characteristics, awareness and uptake of HIV PrEP and PEP, sexual behaviors and HIV test. Binary logistic regression analysis was employed to explore the factors on seeking PrEP and PEP. Results: The average age of college students with sexual experiences was 21.25±2.75. 61.4% of the participants were aware of PrEP, and 53.0% were aware of PEP. 5.6% of them have sought PrEP or/and PEP, 89.1% have not sought PrEP or PEP. College students who had more than 6 sex partners, always having unprotect sex, having subjective perceived risk behavior and doing HIV test were more likely to seek PrEP or/and PEP. The main ways for the participants to learn PrEP and PEP were through school clubs, the internet, and CDC. Moreover, senior students and those who haven't done HIV test had a lower likelihood of seeking PrEP and PEP. College students who didn't have risky sexual behaviors (OR =0.468, P =.004) and homosexuals (OR =0.318, P =.03) were more likely not to seek PEP. Conclusions: College students with sexual experiences rarely seek PrEP and PEP with a relative low awareness of PrEP and PEP. It is very important to increase the knowledge and uptake of PrEP and PEP by education and behaviors intervention among young students at risk for HIV infection.

Abstract:Unprotected sexual activity increases the risk of pregnancy and HIV and AIDS. More than three decades into the AIDS pandemic, the condom remains the most effective strategy for protecting against the dual risks of pregnancy and HIV and AIDS, but data from national surveys suggest that condom use among young people aged 15-24 is on the decline in South Africa. This study uses qualitative data from 20 in-depth interviews and one focus group to examine the risk behaviours of university students aged 18-24 years old, with particular emphasis on understanding the decline in the use of condoms. It is well documented that South Africa has one of the highest prevalence rates of HIV and AIDS in the world, however the findings of this study suggest that even though students were well informed about the perceived risks associated with unsafe sexual behaviours, they continue to engage in risk behaviours including unprotected sexual intercourse, multiple sexual partners and the use of alcohol. Male students were more likely than female students to report risky sexual behaviours. Condom use is occurring but not consistently. The majority of students did not use condoms during their first sexual encounter because of a lack of preparedness. Negative attitudes towards condoms continue to discourage students from using them consistently, especially those provided by the government. In light of this, it is recommended that rigorous efforts are directed towards challenging inaccurate perceptions about, and attitudes towards, condom use to promote consistency.
