A Scalable Program for Customized Patient Education Videos

Abstract:Problem definition: Patients must make sense of increasingly complex information to navigate their health and the health care system, with limited opportunity to do so in clinical settings. Patient education videos may help to communicate key information, but they are often impersonal and cumbersome to produce or update with new evidence. To address these limitations, a program was developed to facilitate local video creation to deliver targeted information to patients. Approach: The Patient Education Video Program was created at a large urban academic medical center. The medical director and two project managers worked with clinicians and patients to create and disseminate short, single-topic videos organized by segments. The videos educated patients on clinical and service topics such as self-care for low back pain and postoperative protocols. Videos were filmed and modified on a user-friendly mobile device application, then prescribed by sharing a link to the online video platform. Video creators were engaged through a learning collaborative, a physician incentive program, and a residency elective in which trainees designed video-based care redesign projects. Outcomes: The program was introduced to practice sites across 26 departments. Some 269 videos received 19,713 unique views in a two-year period. In an operational survey, 1,034 (86.0%) of 1,203 viewer responses stated that a video helped them understand their health, medical condition, or treatment plan. Key insights: A program to facilitate video creation and dissemination is feasible. Clinicians were most receptive to creating and using videos that addressed direct clinical or operational needs.
Evaluating the efficacy of self-study videos for the surgery clerkship rotation: an innovative project in undergraduate surgical education

Abstract:Background: Educational videos have become valuable resources and can address some of the pitfalls of traditional learning. To ensure clerkship students have adequate exposure to curriculum objectives, a series of objective-aligned self-directed learning video podcasts covering core surgical concepts were developed by medical students and surgical residents. The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of the video podcasts in the surgery clerkship rotation. Methods: Nineteen video podcasts were created, housed at www.surgicaleducationportal.com, and distributed to third-year medical students completing their surgical clerkship. A 10-question multiple-choice quiz was administered before and after students viewed each video, and they were also asked to complete a satisfaction survey. Results: A total of 302 paired pretests and posttests were completed. There was a mean increase of 2.7 points in posttest scores compared with pretest scores (p < 0.001). On a Likert scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being excellent, students rated the usefulness of the videos as 4.3, the quality of the content as 4.3 and the quality of the video as 4.2. Ninety-eight percent of students would recommend these videos to their classmates. Conclusion: Video podcasts are an effective modality for engaging medical students and may improve standardization of learning during their surgical clerkship.
Teaching Skills Training for Pre-clinical Medical Students Through Weekly Problem-Based Learning Teaching Topic Presentations and Directed Feedback

Abstract:Abstract Problem Medical students commonly encounter scenarios in which they are charged with teaching medical content, but studies find a paucity of teaching skills training especially in the pre-clerkship phase of undergraduate medical programs. Intervention Videos lessons were created to instruct on five teaching skills identified as useful for presenting short lessons on medical topics: effective learning objectives, appropriate lesson complexity, audience engagement, relevance to practice, and resource selection. A rubric was generated to assess the performance level of each teaching skill. Context First-year medical students viewed the video lessons and were instructed to implement these teaching skills for the creation and delivery of weekly learning issue (LI) presentations within a problem-based learning (PBL) course. PBL facilitators assessed students by using the rubric to assign a score of 0–2 corresponding to the level of skill performance. Impact Scores in every dimension of our LI assessment rubric showed significant improvement above week 1 at the end of the initial 4 weeks of practice and assessment. Follow-up assessment showed durable performance and significant improvement for 3 out of 5 at weeks 8 and 12. Lessons Learned Our novel framework was effective in fostering the adoption and implementation of five teaching skills among first-year medical students over a 4-week period, with most skills remaining durable over 12 weeks. Furthermore, end-of-course surveys showed that students found feedback received using the framework helpful in improving their LIs, and faculty reported that student LI presentation quality improved overall.

Abstract:<span>The use of recorded video in medical education is increasing. Video material may be assigned before scheduled sessions to create a flipped classroom. Here, the instructor may lead a session that is organized for discussion, interpretation, and reflection of the previewed content. We established conditions that lead to increased student participation and engagement with prerecorded content for a medical genetics section in a first-year medical school basic sciences integrated course. Preliminary analysis of an asynchronous video-based pre-professional program directed the design of video material to support a first semester medical genetics course. We compared student participation in, and opinion of, a flipped-classroom session based on written vs. video presentation of material. Student opinion was surveyed with audience response devices (clickers). Shorter videos that were created specifically for the course were preferred by students compared to recordings of previously delivered lectures. Students preferred videos to assigned reading material and consistent scheduling throughout the teaching semester increased student participation. Presentation of medical school content with previously recorded video material can be a useful teaching tool if properly implemented.</span>

A Multi-Institution Collaboration to Define Core Content and Design Flexible Curricular Components for a Foundational Medical School Course: Implications for National Curriculum Reform

Abstract:Medical educators have not reached widespread agreement on core content for a U.S. medical school curriculum. As a first step toward addressing this, five U.S. medical schools formed the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Reimagining Medical Education collaborative to define, create, implement, and freely share core content for a foundational medical school course on microbiology and immunology. This proof-of-concept project involved delivery of core content to preclinical medical students through online videos and class-time interactions between students and facilitators. A flexible, modular design allowed four of the medical schools to successfully implement the content modules in diverse curricular settings. Compared with the prior year, student satisfaction ratings after implementation were comparable or showed a statistically significant improvement. Students who took this course at a time point in their training similar to when the USMLE Step 1 reference group took Step 1 earned equivalent scores on National Board of Medical Examiners-Customized Assessment Services microbiology exam items. Exam scores for three schools ranged from 0.82 to 0.84, compared with 0.81 for the national reference group; exam scores were 0.70 at the fourth school, where students took the exam in their first quarter, two years earlier than the reference group. This project demonstrates that core content for a foundational medical school course can be defined, created, and used by multiple medical schools without compromising student satisfaction or knowledge. This project offers one approach to collaboratively defining core content and designing curricular resources for preclinical medical school education that can be shared.

Abstract:Journal of Medical Education and Curricular Development, Volume 11, Issue , January-December 2024. BACKGROUNDAnimated videos have become popular in teaching medical students, although there is a certain lack of evidence concerning its efficacy. Surgery seems to be an ideal field for its application, since animations are very helpful to understand anatomic structures and complex procedures. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of animated videos compared to textbooks on learning gain.METHODSA prospective 2-arm cohort study with 5th-year medical students was conducted during their 2-week surgical training module. The initial cohort of students received textbook sections on 3 major topics in visceral surgery as learning medium (text cohort). During the following semester, the second cohort of students received 3 animated whiteboard videos (animated videos) containing equivalent content (video cohort). All participants completed a multiple-choice test consisting of 15 questions on the learning content at baseline (pre-test) and after the learning period (post-test) and answered an additional evaluation questionnaire.RESULTSBoth cohorts were similar in their descriptive data and demonstrated significant learning gain during the 2-week learning period. The video cohort achieved better results (80% vs 73% correct answers; P = .028) and a higher learning gain (17% vs 11%; P = .034) in the post-test compared to the text cohort. The estimated learning time was longer in the video cohort (62 min vs 37 min; P < .001) and watching the videos resulted in higher learning gain (21% vs 6%; P < .001). Subgroups with higher learning gain by video learning were female gender (20% vs 11%; P = .040), native German speakers (18% vs 11%; P = .009), students without prior surgical experience (19% vs 12%; P = .033) and those undecided concerning a surgical career (22% vs 9%; P = .020). Interestingly, "low digital orientation" students benefited from videos (22% vs 13%; P = .021), whereas "high digital orientation" students did not.CONCLUSIONSAnimated videos increase medical students' learning gain and interest in surgery.
Anthropomorphic Character Animations Versus Digital Chalk Talks in a Resident Diabetes Pharmacotherapy Curriculum: a Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Background: Animation in medical education has boomed over the past two decades, and demand for distance learning technologies will likely continue in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, experimental data guiding best practices for animation in medical education are scarce. Objective: To compare the efficacy of two animated video styles in a diabetes pharmacotherapy curriculum for internal medicine residents. Design: Learners were randomized to receive one of two versions of the same multimodal didactic curriculum. They received identical lectures, group activities, and quizzes, but were randomized to either digital chalk talk (DCT) videos or Sugar-Coated Science (SCS). SCS is an animated series using anthropomorphic characters, stories, and mnemonics to communicate knowledge. Participants: Ninety-two internal medicine residents at a single academic medical center received the curriculum within ambulatory medicine didactics. Main measures: Knowledge was measured at multiple time points, as was residents' self-reported comfort using each medication class covered. Surveys assessed video acceptability and telepresence. Key themes were identified from open-ended feedback. Key results: Baseline knowledge was low, consistent with prior needs assessments. On immediate posttest, mean scores were higher with SCS than DCT (74.8% versus 68.4%), but the difference was not statistically significant, p = 0.10. Subgroup analyses revealed increased knowledge in the SCS group for specific medication classes. Delayed posttest showed significant knowledge gains averaging 17.6% across all participants (p < 0.05); these gains were similar between animation types. SCS achieved significantly higher telepresence, entertainment, and acceptability scores than DCT. Qualitative data suggested that residents prioritize well-designed, multimodal curricula over specific animation characteristics. Conclusion: SCS and DCTs both led to learning within a multimodal curriculum, but SCS significantly enhanced learner experience. Animation techniques exemplified by both SCS and DCTs have roles in the medical educator toolkit. Selection between them should incorporate context, learner factors, and production resources.
Leveraging technology to improve access to medical education in anatomy and physiology in resource-limited settings: A mixed methods study

Abstract:This study assesses the acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, and efficacy of a novel asynchronous video-based intervention for teaching respiratory physiology and anatomy to medical students in resource-limited settings. A series of short video lectures on pleural anatomy, pulmonary physiology, and pathophysiology was created using Lightboard and screen capture technology. These were uploaded to YouTube and Google Drive and made available to 1st-3rd year medical students at two Latin American universities for 1 week. Employing a parallel-convergent mixed methods design, we conducted surveys, focus groups, interviews, and pre/post testing for qualitative and quantitative data. Thematic Analysis was used to analyze qualitative data and McNemar's test for quantitative analysis. Seventy-six students participated. The videos' short format, interactivity, and Lightboard style were highly valued for their flexibility, time efficiency, and educational impact. Students recognized their clinical relevance and trusted their content, suggesting potential applicability in similar settings. Despite infrastructure and connectivity challenges, the use of flexible streaming and downloadable options facilitated learning. Survey results indicated high levels of feasibility (99%), appropriateness (95%), and acceptability (95%), with significant knowledge gains observed (37% correct pre-test answers vs. 56% post-test, p < 0.0001). Our findings demonstrate high acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, and efficacy of a targeted asynchronous education centered on short-format videos in resource-limited settings, enabling robust learning despite local barriers. Flexible access is key for overcoming localized barriers. Taking an adaptive, learner-centered approach to content creation and delivery to address constraints was pivotal to success. Our modular videos could serve as versatile models for flexible education in resource-constrained settings.

Abstract:PROBLEM: People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face complex biopsychosocial challenges and are medically underserved. This is in part due to insufficient resources and supports but can also be attributed to a lack of adequate physician training in addressing the unique needs of this population.INTERVENTION: This study aimed to introduce 1st-year medical students to the IDD population using a blended educational experience that included video narratives of and direct interactions with people affected by IDD. The goal of this intervention was to promote person-centered attitudes and communication among early medical trainees.CONTEXT: The study recruited 27 first-year medical students and randomly assigned each to 1 of 2 groups. The control group received an introductory video lecture about IDD healthcare, followed by a quiz. The narrative group received the same lecture, followed by reflective discussion of videos featuring people living with IDD sharing their perspectives and stories. All students then participated in 4 simulated clinical encounters with patient educators (PEs) who have lived experiences of IDD. Focus groups were conducted with students following the simulated encounters to explore their experiences and perceptions of this blended learning activity. Moreover, secondary quantitative data were collected to assess students' performance in the clinical encounters, along with self-reports of comfort, confidence, and competence of interacting with people with IDD (pre- and postparticipation).OUTCOME: All students thought that the blended educational experience was valuable and enjoyable, commenting on the importance of adaptable language and engagement of people with IDD, as well as the merits of reflecting on patient narratives. Students also discussed feelings of discomfort stemming from a lack of knowledge and previous exposure to IDD and how this discomfort might motivate them to learn more and develop their skills further. In addition, descriptive analyses revealed that students in the narrative group showed greater self-rated measures of comfort, confidence, and competence compared to control; they also had higher mean performance scores across all PE interview stations.LESSONS LEARNED: PEs add a powerful real-life dimension to communication skills teaching and have been shown to be a valuable educational modality. Moreover, exposure to and reflection on video-based patient narratives are useful ways of teaching medical students about patients' lived experiences and promoting person-centered communication, both within and beyond IDD.

Abstract:Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated a transition from lecture-based classes to blended and online learning, increasing the need to integrate publicly available online educational videos. Although online videos are widely available, it is challenging for educators to effectively integrate them into a curriculum. Years before the pandemic, educators from different institutions integrated videos from a library of microbiology and immunology resources into different curricula. Their experiences may inform current educators on the approach to incorporating external resources into their unique curricula. Methods: We interviewed US health professions instructors or course directors who had previously requested access to online microbiology and immunology videos. Using thematic analysis, we organized prominent themes into an existing framework for curriculum development. We then reflected on the meaning of the themes using the same conceptual framework. Results: We found that educators from different schools were able to integrate the same publicly available videos into varying contexts. Most used them as preparation for interactive sessions. For integrating videos, educators felt success when the following actions occurred. 1) Educators integrated videos as a tool to enhance active-learning activities. 2) Educators created activities that focused on clinical applications of knowledge, taught critical thinking, and developed enthusiasm for the subject. 3) They tested students on knowledge application and major concepts rather than solely on content for high-stakes exams. 4) Educators worked with administrators who understood the goals of integrating external videos and supported educators with time and resources to develop effective blended learning. Conclusion: Our study suggests that educators integrating external resources into their curricula may benefit from first establishing their goals and aspirations for their students. These goals then become the anchor for other curricular elements, including external videos, in-class activities, and assessments. Our study highlights the need for dedicated time to develop experienced and enthusiastic educators.
A Novel, Mutually Beneficial Student-Faculty Partnership to Develop Real-Time Formative Assessments Aligning with the Preclinical Undergraduate Medical Curriculum

Abstract:Problem: A shortage of curriculum-aligned formative multiple-choice questions (FMCQs) remains despite their known learning benefits in preclinical medical education due to limitations on teaching faculty time and other reasons. In response, students often use extramural resources such as commercial or collaborative question banks; however, these options are often expensive and cannot be aligned with the content of each school's unique curriculum. In addition, students need feedback on their learning in a manner that parallels the format of summative assessments. In this pilot, the authors aimed to enhance student learning by creating an intramural formative practice resource that was developed as the curriculum unfolded under the direction of the faculty leading the concurrently running curricular units. Approach: The authors developed a workflow known as Professor-Reviewed Exam Practice (PREP) in 2023. PREP partnered preclinical medical students and faculty to create vignette-style, single best response FMCQs with feedback for every lecture and self-guided learning module in multiple preclinical blocks of The Ohio State University College of Medicine undergraduate medical curriculum. Outcomes: PREP established a sustainable, student-led, faculty-guided workflow that created high-quality, curriculum-aligned FMCQs for student use in the preclinical medical curriculum over a 14-month period. Usage rates were high across multiple preclinical blocks, reflecting high student demand for FMCQs of this nature and their value as a study aid. Survey data showed faculty agreed that their time commitment and role in the PREP workflow was appropriate. Next steps: Future work will evaluate the benefits of PREP to students by exploring the potential impact of PREP FMCQs on summative assessment performance and if writing FMCQs confers benefits to PREP team members. Faculty survey indicated that performance data from PREP FMCQs could be used to tailor upcoming teaching and learning methods, which is an area for future inquiry.
Medical Student and Tutor Perceptions of Video Versus Text in an Interactive Online Virtual Patient for Problem-Based Learning: A Pilot Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The impact of the use of video resources in primarily paper-based problem-based learning (PBL) settings has been widely explored. Although it can provide many benefits, the use of video can also hamper the critical thinking of learners in contexts where learners are developing clinical reasoning. However, the use of video has not been explored in the context of interactive virtual patients for PBL.OBJECTIVE: A pilot study was conducted to explore how undergraduate medical students interpreted and evaluated information from video- and text-based materials presented in the context of a branched interactive online virtual patient designed for PBL. The goal was to inform the development and use of virtual patients for PBL and to inform future research in this area.METHODS: An existing virtual patient for PBL was adapted for use in video and provided as an intervention to students in the transition year of the undergraduate medicine course at St George's, University of London. Survey instruments were used to capture student and PBL tutor experiences and perceptions of the intervention, and a formative review meeting was run with PBL tutors. Descriptive statistics were generated for the structured responses and a thematic analysis was used to identify emergent themes in the unstructured responses.RESULTS: Analysis of student responses (n=119) and tutor comments (n=18) yielded 8 distinct themes relating to the perceived educational efficacy of information presented in video and text formats in a PBL context. Although some students found some characteristics of the videos beneficial, when asked to express a preference for video or text the majority of those that responded to the question (65%, 65/100) expressed a preference for text. Student responses indicated that the use of video slowed the pace of PBL and impeded students' ability to review and critically appraise the presented information.CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that text was perceived to be a better source of information than video in virtual patients for PBL. More specifically, the use of video was perceived as beneficial for providing details, visual information, and context where text was unable to do so. However, learner acceptance of text was higher in the context of PBL, particularly when targeting clinical reasoning skills. This pilot study has provided the foundation for further research into the effectiveness of different virtual patient designs for PBL.

Applying cognitive integration to oncology: A novel asynchronous foundational science curriculum for medical students during clerkships.

Abstract:11028 Background: Cognitive integration (CI) connects foundational science (FS) to medical practice and improves clinical reasoning. While evidence supports CI in medical training, the clinical relevance of FS is often obscure to medical students, particularly in oncology, and few learning materials exist to support CI during clerkships. Providing effective and engaging tools to promote CI may enhance understanding of FS relevance to clinical medicine. We therefore aimed to create an online module to integrate FS into clerkships. Methods: Previous student feedback at our institution advocated for clinically relevant FS content. Applying Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning principles, we (an oncologist, a biochemist, and an instructional designer) created a cancer module grounded in the hallmarks of cancer (HoC), a key FS principle. To emphasize clinical relevance, we recorded patient interviews incorporating FS. The module, composed in Qualtrics, includes an introduction and four cases, each starting with a brief patient interview, followed by clinical text, images, questions, and explanations. Content co-created by the oncologist and biochemist combined clinical and FS perspectives and referenced the HoC throughout. We piloted a draft with a focus group of four students. The evaluation plan includes written learner feedback, a case-based pre/post-test, and review of clerkship assessments for evidence of CI. Results: We produced an FS oncology module with an estimated engagement time of two hours, which students may complete over multiple sittings. The development team met monthly over the course of one year. Filming and editing cost $100/hour. Overall, the project required approximately 60 faculty person-hours and 12 instructional designer person-hours. The patients interviewed for the module expressed gratitude for sharing their stories with students. The student focus group yielded unanimously positive feedback about the content, the multimedia format, the level of FS covered, and the use of authentic patient videos to enhance clinical relevance. Students strongly preferred this module compared to prior online learning activities. Conclusions: This novel interactive module can serve as a model for development of clerkship curricula promoting CI. Module creation based on real patients resulted in authentic story-telling and enhanced FS relevance. Content development involving a clinician and a basic scientist aligned with CI goals. Limitations include the need for funding and instructional design assistance. A randomized controlled trial comparing a series of novel FS modules to older recorded lectures may demonstrate improved outcomes. Involving learners in curriculum development may decrease faculty burden and increase student interest in FS.

Abstract:Large lecture courses are an efficient way to convey material to many students but have potential limitations, most notably the tendency for them to promote passive learning opportunities rather than active pedagogies. The curriculum at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, like many veterinary schools, contains many large lecture courses in the pre‐clinical curriculum. This objective of this study was to use two active pedagogical interventions in a first‐year lecture course named Veterinary Biochemistry and Metabolism that drew connections between basic science and several veterinary diseases. The first intervention targeted increasing students' intrinsic motivation and their confidence with understanding biochemistry concepts using videos created via collaborations between students, staff, and clinical and basic science faculty. The second intervention targeted active and collaborative learning via the implementation of clinical case studies completed in groups to relate lecture content to clinical scenarios with the aim of further enhancing student confidence in their knowledge of the material. To assess the effectiveness of these two interventions, pre‐and post‐course surveys using Likert style questions were administered to evaluate student confidence in the targeted concepts. The post‐survey included open‐ended responses on students' perspectives on their most important takeaways from the activities and their suggestions for improvements. The data showed a positive impact of these interventions on student motivation and confidence in their knowledge. This study provides support that targeted interventions to increase active learning strategies increase student engagement and may improve learning efficacy in large lecture courses.

Abstract:Introduction: Although flipped learning has experienced significant uptake within pharmacy schools, its use within related doctoral graduate programs is not well described or understood. Materials and Methods: Thirteen pre-class videos originally created for a Doctor of Pharmacy class were implemented as pre-class learning for a related Doctor of Philosophy class. In the Fall 2018 and Fall 2019, students completed a survey about their experiences, and faculty provided narrative feedback about their experiences. Results: Pre-class videos were positively rated by students, with most agreeing that they "prepared me for the content or activities in the corresponding class" ( n = 16, 94.1%). Most agreed that doctoral courses "taught in a classroom should offer pre-recorded lectures" ( n = 13, 76.5%). No significant differences were found by year or gender. Faculty subsequently increased their use of pre-class videos. Conclusions: This study is a first step toward exploring strategies for leveraging curriculum materials in flipped classrooms at schools offering multiple degree programs.
Case-Based Asynchronous Interactive Modules in Undergraduate Medical Education

Abstract:Undergraduate medical education traditionally consists of 2 years of lecture-based courses followed by 2 years of clinical clerkships. However, over the past couple decades, undergraduate medical education has been evolving toward non-lecture-based integrated curriculums, requiring a collaborative curriculum. Additionally, e-learning platforms have become efficacious and essential to delivering education asynchronously to students. At Thomas Jefferson University, the Pathology and Obstetrics and Gynecology departments collaborated to create a pilot series of case-based asynchronous interactive modules to teach gynecologic pathology in a clinical context, while interweaving other educational components, such as evidence-based medicine, clinical skills, and basic sciences. The case-based asynchronous interactive modules were given to third-year medical students during their obstetrics and gynecology clerkship. Students interpreted histologic and clinical images while being evaluated on clinical management skills, gynecologic diagnoses, general principles of population health and pathology. Sixty-eight students from 3 blocks completed a pre and posttest. All participants showed improvement in interpreting gynecologic pathology in routine clinical scenarios as well as improved case-based decision-making, with an average score increase by 5.7%. Learner feedback was positive, with suggestions to apply this method to other medical specialties, particularly radiology. Asynchronous interactive modules are an efficacious and popular method of pathology education.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: In line with a recent report entitled Effective Use of Educational Technology in Medical Education from the Association of American Medical Colleges Institute for Improving Medical Education (AAMC-IME), this study examined whether revising a medical lecture based on evidence-based principles of multimedia design would lead to improved long-term transfer and retention in Year 3 medical students. A previous study yielded positive effects on an immediate retention test, but did not investigate long-term effects.METHODS: In a pre-test/post-test control design, a cohort of 37 Year 3 medical students at a private, midwestern medical school received a bullet point-based PowerPoint™ lecture on shock developed by the instructor as part of their core curriculum (the traditional condition group). Another cohort of 43 similar medical students received a lecture covering identical content using slides redesigned according to Mayer's evidence-based principles of multimedia design (the modified condition group).RESULTS: Findings showed that the modified condition group significantly outscored the traditional condition group on delayed tests of transfer given 1 week (d = 0.83) and 4 weeks (d = 1.17) after instruction, and on delayed tests of retention given 1 week (d = 0.83) and 4 weeks (d = 0.79) after instruction. The modified condition group also significantly outperformed the traditional condition group on immediate tests of retention (d = 1.49) and transfer (d = 0.76).CONCLUSIONS: This study provides the first evidence that applying multimedia design principles to an actual medical lecture has significant effects on measures of learner understanding (i.e. long-term transfer and long-term retention). This work reinforces the need to apply the science of learning and instruction in medical education.
