Abstract:Pantograph slider is a critical component of the electrical equipment to obtain power sources for the electric locomotive, whereas the interaction between the slider and the overhead contact line can cause persistent surface wear of the collector strip. The condition monitoring for the level of abrasion of the pantograph slider is significant to avoid major damage. In this article, an innovative approach based on multiview analysis is proposed for monitoring the surface wear of the slider in a running train, accurately measuring the residual thickness of the slider, and locating the wear defects appearing. Especially, the 3-D reconstruction technology is used for detecting the wear quantity between the upper and lower edges of the slider. First, the target edges of the slider are determined using the proposed subpixel edge detection algorithm. Second, mutual matching of the edge points between the multiview images is finished using the epipolar geometric constraint. Moreover, the 3-D reconstructions of the matching points are computed with the principle of triangulation. Finally, the wear volume of the slider can be determined. Experimental results show that the proposed method can successfully measure the abrasion of the pantograph slider under complex conditions, which demonstrate the applicability, effectiveness, and good performance of the proposed approach.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper is primarily dedicated to addressing the issue of monitoring surface wear on the pantograph slider of electric locomotives. Electric locomotives obtain power through a dynamic contact system between the pantograph and the catenary, but this process leads to continuous surface wear on both the pantograph slider and the contact wire. The wear on the pantograph slider not only affects the quality of current collection and the stability of power supply but also directly relates to the safe operation of the train. To prevent significant damage caused by severe wear, the paper proposes an innovative method based on multi-view analysis to monitor the surface wear of the pantograph slider on running trains, accurately measure the remaining thickness of the slider, and locate the wear defects. Specifically, the method first uses a sub-pixel edge detection algorithm to determine the target edges; then, it completes mutual matching through the epipolar geometry constraints between edge points in multi-view images; next, it calculates the 3D reconstruction of the matching points using the principle of triangulation; finally, it determines the wear amount of the slider based on the 3D reconstruction results. Experimental results show that under complex conditions, this method can successfully measure the wear of the pantograph slider, demonstrating the effectiveness and good performance of the method.
