Abstract:In this paper we lay out an argument that generically the psychological arrow of time should align with the thermodynamic arrow of time where that arrow is well-defined. This argument applies to any physical system that can act as a memory, in the sense of preserving a record of the state of some other system. This result follows from two principles: the robustness of the thermodynamic arrow of time to small perturbations in the state, and the principle that a memory should not have to be fine-tuned to match the state of the system being recorded. This argument applies even if the memory system itself is completely reversible and non-dissipative. We make the argument with a paradigmatic system, then formulate it more broadly for any system that can be considered a memory. We illustrate these principles for a few other example systems, and compare our criteria to earlier treatments of this problem.

Abstract:The thermodynamic arrow-of-time problem is thought to be resolved by the observation that our universe initially was---and still is---far from equilibrium. The psychological arrow-of-time problem is often attributed the same resolution, but the connection has not been thoroughly established. I argue that a compelling explanation of the psychological arrow requires an understanding of the physical conditions necessary for life to emerge from a prebiotic environment. A simple calculation illustrates how life-sustaining energy fluxes from the Sun and the Earth's interior bias the development of life in the direction of the arrow inherited from cosmic initial conditions.

Demystifying Arrow of Time

Abstract:Scientific discussions of the arrow of time often get quite confusing due to highly complex systems they deal with. Popular literature then often coveys messages that tend to get lost in translation. The purpose of this note is to demystify the arrow of time by stripping off the unnecessary complexities and thereby simplifying the discussion. We do this by providing examples that are exactly solvable and make it easy to see the root cause of the apparent "time-irreversibility". We also discuss "time-reversal" solutions, where the initial state evolves such that it reaches the state which is the same as the initial state moving backward in time. These solutions are simple enough to be comprehensible to a highschooler. We discuss the arrow of time both in the classical and quantum settings, including in the cosmological context.

Abstract:This paper extends the work of a previous paper [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1208.2611" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1208.2611">arXiv:1208.2611</a>] on the flow of time, to consider the origin of the arrow of time. It proposes that a `past condition' cascades down from cosmological to micro scales, being realized in many microstructures and setting the arrow of time at the quantum level by top-down causation. This physics arrow of time then propagates up, through underlying emergence of higher level structures, to geology, astronomy, engineering, and biology. The appropriate space-time picture to view all this is an emergent block universe (`EBU'), that recognizes the way the present is different from both the past and the future. This essential difference is the ultimate reason the arrow of time has to be the way it is.

Time arrow without past hypothesis: a toy model explanation

Abstract:The laws of Physics are time-reversible, making no qualitative distinction between the past and the future -- yet we can only go towards the future. This apparent contradiction is known as the "arrow of time problem". Its current resolution states that the future is the direction of increasing entropy. But entropy can only increase towards the future if it was low in the past, and past low entropy is a very strong assumption to make, because low entropy states are rather improbable, non-generic. Recent works from the Physics literature suggest, however, we may do away with this so-called "past hypothesis", in the presence of reversible dynamical laws featuring expansion. We prove that this can be the case in principle, within a toy model. It consists in graphs upon which particles circulate and interact according to local reversible rules. Some rules locally shrink or expand the graph. We prove that almost all states expand; entropy always increases as a consequence of expansion -- thereby providing a local explanation for the rise of an entropic arrow of time without the need for a past hypothesis. The discrete setting of this toy model allows us to deploy the full rigour of theoretical Computer Science proof techniques. It also allows for the numerical exploration of several physically-motivated variants: a time-symmetric variant; two inflationary variants; and a damping variant -- which slows down thermal death. The fact that all of these models exhibit similar behaviours suggests that local reversible expansion mechanisms constitute a robust recipe for a time arrow without past hypothesis. In this qualitative sense, the explanation may therefore also be relevant at the cosmological level.

Abstract:Why do we remember the past, and plan the future? We introduce a toy model in which to investigate emergent time asymmetries: the causal multibaker maps. These are reversible discrete-time dynamical systems with configurable causal interactions. Imposing a suitable initial condition or "Past Hypothesis", and then coarse-graining, yields a Pearlean locally causal structure. While it is more common to speculate that the other arrows of time arise from the thermodynamic arrow, our model instead takes the causal arrow as fundamental. From it, we obtain the thermodynamic and epistemic arrows of time. The epistemic arrow concerns records, which we define to be systems that encode the state of another system at another time, regardless of the latter system's dynamics. Such records exist of the past, but not of the future. We close with informal discussions of the evolutionary and agential arrows of time, and their relevance to decision theory.

Abstract:The nature of time has beguiled philosophers for nearly three millennia. There are myriad types of time including cosmological time, biological time, psychological time, physical time, historical time, and even theological time. My brief essay concerns time in physics and I hope that the pragmatism of an experimental physicist might help provide a perspective that is often absent in treatises by contemporary philosophers and physicists. This is especially the case for the notion of the arrow of time. The paradox of the arrow of time arises because the laws of physics are invariably time reversal invariant, in which case we are led to ask what determines the direction of time. Investigations of time's arrow are usually framed in the context of a mathematical formalism where the parameter t represents time, and then proceed to logical analyses of how the direction of time emerges. The implicit assumption is that time is an ontological property of nature. On the other hand, for an empiricist like me, it is absolutely crucial to frame any such discussion in terms of direct human experience and not on a parameter in a mathematical model. This, in short, is the motivation for my essay and I conclude that the paradox of the arrow of time is an artificial problem that needs no resolution.

Abstract:In order to describe the quantum electrodynamic measurement process in a relativistic observer-participant manner, an operator symmetry of "microscopic observer-participation" called Measurement Color (MC) is incorporated into the field theoretic structure of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) in the Heisenberg Picture. It is found that the resultant Measurement Color Quantum Electrodynamics (MC-QED) contains a microscopic quantum electrodynamic arrow of time that emerges dynamically, independent of any thermodynamic or cosmological assumptions. This occurs because the photon has a negative time parity in MC-QED. This causes a spontaneous breaking of the T and CPT symmetry to be generated by the physical requirement that a stable vacuum state exists in the MC-QED formalimm. This dynamically selects operator solutions containing a causal, retarded, quantum electrodynamic arrow of time due in the Heisenberg operator equations of motion. In support of the validity of this idea we show that a classic nonlinear optics experiment in the scientific literature, which involves a Michelson interferometer using combinations of ordinary mirrors and phase conjugate mirrors, contains experimental results which support the idea that the photon has a negative parity under Wigner time reversal and thus carries the arrow of time in the universe.

Abstract:Based on the hypothesis that the (non-reversible) arrow of time is intrinsic in any system, no matter how small, the consequences are discussed. Within the framework of local quantum physics it is shown how such a semi-group action of time can consistently be extended to that of the group of spacetime translations in Minkowski space. In presence of massless excitations, however, there arise ambiguities in the theoretical extensions of the time translations to the past. The corresponding loss of quantum information on states upon time is determined. Finally, it is explained how the description of operations in classical terms combined with constraints imposed by the arrow of time leads to a quantum theoretical framework. These results suggest that the arrow of time is fundamental in nature and not merely a consequence of statistical effects on which the Second Law is based.

Abstract:In classical thermodynamics, heat cannot spontaneously pass from a colder system to a hotter system, which is called the thermodynamic arrow of time. However, if the initial states are entangled, the direction of the thermodynamic arrow of time may not be guaranteed. Here we take the thermofield double state at $0+1$ dimension as the initial state and assume its gravity duality to be the eternal black hole in AdS$_2$ space. We make the temperature difference between the two sides by changing the Hamiltonian. We turn on proper interaction between the two sides and calculate the changes in energy and entropy. The energy transfer, as well as the thermodynamic arrow of time, are mainly determined by the competition between two channels: thermal diffusion and anomalous heat flow. The former is not related to the wormhole and obeys the thermodynamic arrow of time; the latter is related to the wormhole and reverses the thermodynamic arrow of time, i.e. transferring energy from the colder side to the hotter side at the cost of entanglement consumption. Finally, we find that the thermal diffusion wins the competition, and the whole thermodynamic arrow of time has not been reversed.

Abstract:Emergence of one-time-direction macroscopic evolution of a classical system of two mixed gases having different temperatures is derived and explained. The analysis performed at the microscopic level, where the time-symmetric laws of mechanics govern the particles collisions, leads to a time-asymmetric macroscopic heat transfer equation and a theorem analogous to the Boltzmann H-theorem. Some statistical symmetries in the velocity distribution that should be satisfied by the incoming and outgoing particles are pointed out. The time reversed evolution is shown to be highly improbable because in this case these typical symmetries are broken. Additionally, some remarks explaining implicit time-asymmetry of the Boltzmann \emph{Stosszahlansatz} are made.

Abstract:We discuss how quantum geometrodynamics, a conservative approach to quantum gravity, might explain the emergence of classical spacetime and, with it, the emergence of classical time and its arrow from the universal quantum state. This follows from a particular but reasonable choice of boundary condition motivated by the structure of the Hamiltonian of the theory. This condition can also be seen as defining a quantum version of Penrose's Weyl curvature hypothesis. We comment on the relation of this picture to the `past hypothesis' and the different observed arrows of time, and we consider how quantum geometrodynamics could serve as a unifying and more fundamental framework to explain these observations.

Abstract:The cosmological arrow of time may be linked to the thermodynamic arrow by second law of thermodynamics. The time asymmetry is also associated with dissipative fluid as Tolman introduced a viscous fluid to generate an arrow of time in cyclic cosmology. An arrow of time in cyclic cosmology has been shown using scalar <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://field.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> this work we find out the cosmological arrow of time in f(R) gravity. Here we use the relation between a new scalar field and $f(R)$. The dynamics of this new scalar field may emerge the arrow of time.

Abstract:If an asymmetry in time does not arise from the fundamental dynamical laws of physics, it may be found in special boundary conditions. The argument normally goes that since thermodynamic entropy in the past is lower than in the future according to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, then tracing this back to the time around the Big Bang means the universe must have started off in a state of very low thermodynamic entropy: the Thermodynamic Past Hypothesis. In this paper, we consider another boundary condition that plays a similar role, but for the decoherent arrow of time, i.e. the quantum state of the universe is more mixed in the future than in the past. According to what we call the Entanglement Past Hypothesis, the initial quantum state of the universe had very low entanglement entropy. We clarify the content of the Entanglement Past Hypothesis, compare it with the Thermodynamic Past Hypothesis, and identify some challenges and open questions for future research.

Abstract:Classical physics possesses an arrow of time in the form of the second law of thermodynamics. But a clear picture of the quantum origin of the arrow of time has been lacking so far. In this letter, we show that an arrow of time arises naturally in quantum chaotic systems. We show that, for an isolated quantum system which is also chaotic, the change in entropy is non-negative when the system is perturbed. At leading order in perturbation theory, this result follows from Berry's conjecture and eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH). We show that this gives rise to a new profound constraint on the off-diagonal terms in the ETH statement. In case of an integrable system, the second law does not hold true because the system does not thermalize to a generalized Gibbs ensemble after a finite perturbation.

Disappearing Without a Trace: The Arrows of Time in Kent's Solution to the Lorentzian Quantum Reality Problem

Abstract:Most existing proposals to explain the temporal asymmetries we see around us are sited within an approach to physics based on time evolution, and thus they typically put the asymmetry in at the beginning of time in the form of a special initial state. But there may be other possibilities for explaining temporal asymmetries if we don't presuppose the time evolution paradigm. In this article, we explore one such possibility, based on Kent's `final-measurement' interpretation of quantum mechanics. We argue that this approach potentially has the resources to explain the electromagnetic asymmetry, the thermodynamic asymmetry, the coarse-graining asymmetry, the fork asymmetry, the record asymmetry, and the cosmological asymmetry, and that the explanations it offers may potentially be better than explanations appealing to a special initial state. Our hope is that this example will encourage further exploration of novel approaches to temporal asymmetry outside of the time evolution paradigm.

Abstract:Fundamental interactions are either fully or nearly symmetric under time reversal. But macroscopic phenomena have a definite arrow of time. Though there is no convergence on the origin of time's preferential direction, many researchers believe that the direction of time is towards increasing entropy. In this paper, we provide an alternate point of view. In driven-dissipative nonequilibrium systems forced at large scale, the energy flows from large scales to dissipative scales. This generic and multiscale process breaks time reversal symmetry and principle of detailed balance, thus can yield an arrow of time. In this paper we propose that conversion of large-scale coherence to small-scales incoherence could be treated as a dissipation mechanism for generic physical systems. We illustrate the above processes using turbulence as an example. We argue that the above picture of time irreversibility could be employed to the universe and to many-body quantum systems.

Abstract:The mechanism by which thermodynamics sets the direction of time's arrow has long fascinated scientists. Here, we show that a machine learning algorithm can learn to discern the direction of time's arrow when provided with a system's microscopic trajectory as input. The performance of our algorithm matches fundamental bounds predicted by nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. Examination of the algorithm's decision-making process reveals that it discovers the underlying thermodynamic mechanism and the relevant physical observables. Our results indicate that machine learning techniques can be used to study systems out of equilibrium, and ultimately to uncover physical principles.

Abstract:It is a truth universally acknowledged that all isolated macroscopic systems must be in want of ever greater disorder, with due apologies to Jane Austen for plagiarizing the opening line in her novel {\it Pride and Prejudice}. This common, everyday process, often referred to as the Arrow of Time, has not been able to find a comfortable home in the body of modern statistical physics. There is a hint of such a disordering arrow in the second law of traditional thermostatics but, properly stated, that law relates only to the static equilibrium state of confined, isolated macroscopic matter. We will attempt to enhance today's thermo{\it statics} with a true thermo{\it dynamics} in which the disordering arrow in time is shown to be responsible for all the order -- creation we find in the universe -- including the existential order needed to sustain life.
