Abstract:Although the solar-thermal technology has opened up a potential green energy harvesting method, it is challenging to suppress the non-negligible energy dissipation while maintaining a high absorbance. Most disordered organic polymers are almost incapable of limiting the absorption in the desired cutoff wavelength range, which is detrimental to the design of selective absorbers. Moreover, the development of absorbers with a periodic plasmonic nanostructure is always lacking in cost-effective scalability. Herein, we report a scalable selective absorber with a quasiperiodic nanostructure composed by an economical widespread surface self-assembly of densely arranged Fe3O4 nano-particles, possessing a high-performance energy conversion for low-grade solar energy. By investigating the scale effect of the quasiperiodic densely arranged plasmonic nanostructure, a significant solar absorption >94% and ideal passive suppression of thermal emissivity <0.2 can be obtained simultaneously. With the synergy of material properties, thermal management, and environmental effect, a flexible planar solar thermoelectric harvester is demonstrated under natural sunlight (AM1.5G), reaching a significant sustaining open-circuit voltage of >20 mV/cm2, without a heat sink. This highly versatile strategy is expected to lead the exploration of energy evolution in fundamental research and pioneer next-generation, high-performance, economical, and practical solar co-harvesting systems.
Efficient, Scalable, And High-Temperature Selective Solar Absorbers Based On Hybrid-Strategy Plasmonic Metamaterials

Abstract:Solar-thermal energy conversion is a promising technology that enables efficient harvesting of sunlight for a broad range of applications. High-performance spectrally selective absorbers with excellent thermal stability are the key to developing efficient high-temperature solar-thermal systems. Recently, plasmonic metamaterial absorbers (PMAs) made of high-loss and refractory materials have aroused special interests, because of their unique capability to trap and absorb sunlight through deep-subwavelength structures with highly tunable spectral selectivity. However, the performance of current PMAs is far from satisfactory owing to both imperfect visible light absorption and ultrahigh infrared emission. Herein, by introducing out-of-plane plasmonic coupling between triangular nanodisks and a tantalum reflector in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) sandwich structure, we developed 240-nm-thick hybrid-strategy (structure-, material-, and shape-based) PMAs, which demonstrate full-spectrum sunlight absorption and greatly reduced infrared emission, ultimately boosting the record-high solar-thermal efficiency (1000K) of PMAs from 66.4% to 77.3% under 100-sun illumination. This superior performance is not only stable at temperatures of 1000K, but also robust to the variations in the constituent materials of top nanodisks and dielectric spacers. Moreover, the performance of such PMAs is independent of the lateral periodicity or orientations of meta-atoms, paving the way for their large-scale deployment.

Abstract:The photothermal effect in localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) should be fully utilized when integrating plasmonics into solar technologies for improved light absorption. In this communication, we demonstrate that the photothermal effect of silver nanostructures can provide a heat source for thermoelectric devices for the first time. The plasmonic band of silver nanostructures can be facilely manoeuvred by tailoring their shapes, enabling them to interact with photons in different spectral ranges for the efficient utilization of solar light. It is anticipated that this concept can be extended to design a photovoltaic-thermoelectric tandem cell structure with plasmonics as mediation for light harvesting.
Plasmonic Enhanced Photothermal Effects and Its Applications.

Abstract:We review here our recent studies on plasmonic enhanced photothermal effects in metallic nanostructure, and the applications of such effects. When light is shined on a prefect metamaterial absorber patterned with e-beam lithography, the gold nanoparticles (NPs) forming the absorber can be either transformed to nano-spherical-domes, or to truncated-octahedral shaped or multi-twined nanocrystals with large crystal grain sizes and flat boundary facets. The evolution of morphology and crystallinity of the gold NPs can be also observed. Evidences clearly show that the surface melting and the coalescence mechanism play a key role on nanocrystals formation. These melted gold nanospheres can even be transferred to another substrate, on which the transferred NPs exhibit excellent size uniformity. The strong photothermal effects can also be utilized to tune silicon photonics waveguides and resonators. It is shown that all-optical photothermal switching of Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI), silicon disk resonators, and silicon ring resonators is possible with the help of plasmonic nanoheaters. The switching response time and power consumption are all at reasonably low level.

A better understanding of electron‐driven and temperature‐driven catalytic behaviors over plasmonic nanometals is helpful to bridge the present gap between the communities of photocatalysis and conventional catalysis controlled by temperature. The objective here is to provide instructive information on how to take the advantages of the unique functions of nanometals in different types of catalytic processes to improve the efficiency of solar‐energy utilization for more practical artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract:Solar energy is a major source of renewable energy with the potential to meet the energy demand and to support the sustainable development of the world. The efficient harvesting and conversion of solar energy is one of the key factors to maximize the utilization of solar energy. In general, solar energy can be harnessed and converted into various kinds of energy, including electricity, fuels and thermal energy, through photovoltaic, photochemical and photothermal processes, respectively. Among these technologies, photothermal conversion is a direct conversion process that has attained the highest achievable conversion efficiency. The photothermal effect has been used as a novel strategy to augment vaporization and catalysis performance. In this review, we look into the basis of the photothermal conversion process, the design of efficient photothermal conversion materials in terms of both light harvesting and thermal management, a fundamental understanding of various system schemes, and the recent progress in photothermal evaporation and catalysis applications. This review aims to afford researchers with a better understanding of the photothermal effect and provide a guide for the rational design and development of highly efficient photothermal materials in energy and environmental fields.

Abstract:During the past decade, a great deal of research work has been carried out on near-field photonics and nano-optics relating to photo-thermal conversion process. In this paper, recent analytical, numerical and experimental studies on radiation properties in visible and near-infraed wavelengths of electromagnetic waves incident on nanoparticles and metamaterials with applications to solar energy harvesting are reviewed. These nanoparticles and metamaterials are made of both isotropic and anisotropic materials. Mie theory is employed for analyses of absorption properties of spherical nanoparticles composed of different materials. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method and the rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) method are used for numerical studies of absorption properties of nanoparticles with arbitrary shapes and power dissipation density distribution of metamaterials, respectively. In addition, a perfect absorber with pyramidal nanostructures made of Bi2Te3 is proposed, and measurements of absorption properties of some fabricated metamaterials are summarized. Potential applications of these nanostructures for solar energy harvesting enhancement are discussed. The results of these studies have provided not only improved understanding of physical mechanisms in enhanced absorption of solar energy by nanoparticles and metamaterials, but also clarified contradictory explanations on the photo thermal conversion process in solar energy harvesting as well. Highly efficient molybdenum nanostructures for solar thermophotovoltaic systems: One-step fabrication of absorber and design of selective emitter

Abstract:Efficient solar energy harvesting materials or structures have become a topic of great interest in response to the ever-increasing energy demand. Refractory transition metals have been found to exhibit attractive properties in broadband absorptance, making them highly effective in solar thermophotovoltaic (STPV) systems that aim to surpass the Shockley-Queisser limit. Typically, broadband absorbers are made from hybrid materials or complex geometrical structures, which require multi-step fabrication technologies. In this study, we successfully developed a highly efficient broadband absorber based on molybdenum (Mo) nanosheets using a one-step physical vapor deposition process. The nanosheets result in the high absorber efficiencies of 96.1 % for blackbody radiation (BBR) at 5778 K and of 96.4 % for air mass (AM) 1.5 spectrum, and are insensitive to polarization and incident angle. After annealing at 1650 K for 24 h, the Mo nanosheets absorber demonstrates outstanding thermal stability without compromising the efficiency of the STPV system. To complete the STPV system, a selective narrowband Mo-based gratings emitter was further designed with a high emissivity of 96 % at a wavelength of 2.17 μm, resulting in a high PV cell efficiency of 41.8 % around 1723 K. Through a series of theoretical calculations, the proposed STPV system can achieve an overall conversion efficiency of 40.2 % by a trade-off between the structure temperature and the sun concentration. Furthermore, an efficiency of 35.5 % can be achieved at a low temperature of 1073 K with a low solar concentration of 500 suns.The results provide tremendous opportunities for widespread applications of high-performance STPV systems.

Abstract:Enhancement of the electromagnetic properties of metallic nanostructures constitute an extensive research field related to plasmonics. The latter term is derived from plasmons, which are quanta corresponding to longitudinal waves that are propagating in matter by the collective motion of electrons. Plasmonics are increasingly finding wide application in sensing, microscopy, optical communications, biophotonics, and light trapping enhancement for solar energy conversion. Although the plasmonics field has relatively a short history of development, it has led to substantial advancement in enhancing the absorption of the solar spectrum and charge carrier separation efficiency. Recently, huge developments have been made in understanding the basic parameters and mechanisms governing the application of plasmonics, including the effects of nanoparticles’ size, arrangement, and geometry and how all these factors impact the dielectric field in the surrounding medium of the plasmons. This review article emphasizes recent developments, fundamentals, and fabrication techniques for plasmonic nanostructures while investigating their thermal effects and detailing light-trapping enhancement mechanisms. The mismatch effect of the front and back light grating for optimum light trapping is also discussed. Different arrangements of plasmonic nanostructures in photovoltaics for efficiency enhancement, plasmonics’ limitations, and modeling performance are also deeply explored.

Abstract:With the development of solar energy utilization and nanotechnology, nanofluid heat collection has attracted significant attention. The solar plasmonic nanofluids with significant local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect have exhibited superior behaviors in thermophysical properties, optical properties, and photothermal conversion efficiency. This paper reviews the research progress of plasmonic nanofluids in solar collectors and PV/T systems and compares them with conventional nanofluids for the first time. The plasmonic nanofluids exhibit excellent light absorption capacity and controllable light intensity and resonance frequency. Due to the existence of the LSPR effect, plasmonic nanofluids show significant absorption peak, which can meet the requirements of broadband solar energy absorption and have better usage value than conventional nanofluids in solar heat collection. Many factors affect the photothermal conversion efficiency of plasmonic nanofluids, such as particle size, concentration and flow rate. Using hybrid nanofluids can significantly broaden the extinction spectrum and further enhance light absorption. To clarify the specific mechanism of plasmonic nanofluids, improve their stability and make them more suitable for different types of solar heat collection, more experimental exploration is needed.

Abstract:Low‐cost and large‐area solar–thermal absorbers with superior spectral selectivity and excellent thermal stability are vital for efficient and large‐scale solar–thermal conversion applications, such as space heating, desalination, ice mitigation, photothermal catalysis, and concentrating solar power. Few state‐of‐the‐art selective absorbers are qualified for both low‐ (<200 °C) and high‐temperature (>600 °C) applications due to insufficient spectral selectivity or thermal stability over a wide temperature range. Here, a high‐performance plasmonic metamaterial selective absorber is developed by facile solution‐based processes via assembling an ultrathin (≈120 nm) titanium nitride (TiN) nanoparticle film on a TiN mirror. Enabled by the synergetic in‐plane plasmon and out‐of‐plane Fabry–Pérot resonances, the all‐ceramic plasmonic metamaterial simultaneously achieves high, full‐spectrum solar absorption (95%), low mid‐IR emission (3% at 100 °C), and excellent stability over a temperature range of 100–727 °C, even outperforming most vacuum‐deposited absorbers at their specific operating temperatures. The competitive performance of the solution‐processed absorber is accompanied by a significant cost reduction compared with vacuum‐deposited absorbers. All these merits render it a cost‐effective, universal solution to offering high efficiency (89–93%) for both low‐ and high‐temperature solar–thermal applications.

Nanostructured multilayer hyperbolic metamaterials for high efficiency and selective solar absorption

Abstract:Highly efficient solar-to-thermal conversion is desired for the renewable energy technologies, such as solar thermo-photovoltaics and solar thermo-electric systems. In order to maximize the energy conversion efficiency, solar-selective absorbers are essential with its absorption characteristics specially tailored for solar applications. Here, we propose a wideband spectral-selective absorber based on three-dimensional (3D) nanostructured hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM), which can realize near-unity absorption across the UV and NIR spectral ranges. Moreover, the optical topological transition (OTT) of iso-frequency surface (IFS) is manipulated to selectively enhance light absorption in the entire solar spectrum, crucial for improved energy utilization. Impressive solar-to-thermal conversion efficiency of 95.5% has been achieved. Particularly, such superior properties can be retained well even over a wide range of incident angles. These findings open new avenues for designing high-performance solar thermal devices, especially in the fields related to solar energy harvesting.

Abstract:Solar energy is a green and sustainable clean energy source. Its rational use can alleviate the energy crisis and environmental pollution. Directly converting solar energy into heat energy is the most efficient method among all solar conversion strategies. Recently, various environmental and energy applications based on nanostructured photothermal materials stimulated the re-examination of the interfacial solar energy conversion process. The design of photothermal nanomaterials is demonstrated to be critical to promote the solar-to-heat energy conversion and the following physical and chemical processes. This review introduces the latest photothermal nanomaterials and their nanostructure modulation strategies for environmental (seawater evaporation) and catalytic (C1 conversion) applications. We present the research progress of photothermal seawater evaporation based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional porous materials. Then, we describe the progress of photothermal catalysis based on layered double hydroxide derived nanostructures, hydroxylated indium oxide nanostructures, and metal plasmonic nanostructures. Finally, we present our insights concerning the future development of this field.

Plasmonic materials for energy: from physics to applications

Abstract:Physical mechanisms unique to plasmonic materials, which can be exploited for the existing and emerging applications of plasmonics for renewable energy technologies, are reviewed. The hybrid nature of surface plasmon (SP) modes - propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and localized surface plasmons (LSPs) - as collective photon-electron oscillations makes them attractive candidates for energy applications. High density of optical states in the vicinity of plasmonic structures enhances light absorption and emission, enables localized heating, and drives near-field heat exchange between hot and cold surfaces. SP modes channel the energy of absorbed photons directly to the free electrons, and the generated hot electrons can be utilized in thermoelectric, photovoltaic and photo-catalytic platforms. Advantages and disadvantages of using plasmonics over conventional technologies for solar energy and waste heat harvesting are discussed, and areas where plasmonics is expected to lead to performance improvements not achievable by other methods are identified.

Abstract:This review presents the broad scope of photothermal applications, offers a comprehensive understanding of the photothermal conversion of solar energy with nanomaterials and nanostructures, and provides guidelines for better design and fabrication of photothermal materials. Solar energy is a green, sustainable, and de facto inexhaustible energy source for mankind. The conversion of solar energy into other forms of energy has attracted extensive research interest due to climate change and the energy crisis. Among all the solar energy conversion technologies, photothermal conversion of solar energy exhibits unique advantages when applied for water purification, desalination, high‐temperature heterogeneous catalysis, anti‐bacterial treatments, and deicing. In this review, the various photothermal conversion mechanisms based on different forms of heat release are summarized and some of the latest examples are presented. In addition, the necessary prerequisites for solar‐driven photothermal materials toward their practical applications are also discussed. Further, the latest advances in photothermal conversion of solar energy are discussed, focusing on different types of photothermal applications. Finally, a summary is given and the challenges and opportunities in the photothermal conversion of solar energy are presented. This review aims to give a comprehensive understanding of emerging solar energy conversion technologies based on the photothermal effect, especially by using nanomaterials and nanostructures.
