Abstract:The photophysical properties of fluorescent dyes are key determinants in the performance of luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs). First-generation dyes--coumarin, perylenes, and rhodamines--used in LSCs suffer from both concentration quenching in the solid-state and small Stokes shifts which limit the current LSC efficiencies to below theoretical limits. Here we show that fluorophores that exhibit aggregation-induced emission (AIE) are promising materials for LSC applications. Experiments and Monte Carlo simulations show that the optical quantum efficiencies of LSCs with AIE fluorophores are at least comparable to those of LSCs with first-generation dyes as the active materials even without the use of any optical accessories to enhance the trapping efficiency of the LSCs. Our results demonstrate that AIE fluorophores can potentially solve some key limiting properties of first-generation LSC dyes.

Abstract:Reabsorption of the luminescence at high concentration is one of the major challenges in organic luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs). One potential and promising solution involves enhancing the Stokes shift of luminophores through the implementation of an energy transfer strategy from donor to emitter luminophores. In this work, we focused on synthesis and characterization of fluorescent polymer nanoparticles incorporating perylene diimides (PDI) for mitigating the reabsorption of the luminescence in bulk LSC applications. The nanoparticles were synthesized by emulsion polymerization resulting in particle sizes ranging from 120 to 300 nm with dye loading between 1 and 2 wt.%. The high dye loading enabled energy transfer between the nanoparticle-confined luminophores and the photophysical properties of both solution and film samples were thoroughly investigated using a range of spectroscopic techniques. The antenna effect in the dye loaded particles resulted in a high luminescence quantum yield (ΦPL) and reduced emission reabsorption. A maximum ΦPL of 91% was found for the sample containing 1 wt.% donor and 0.3 wt.% emitter providing a promising light harvesting system for LSC devices. Monte Carlo ray tracing simulations were performed to estimate the performance of LSC devices yielding an optical quantum efficiency of 51% at a geometric gain of 62.5.

Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSC) are a promising technology for building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). Besides obtaining satisfactory efficiencies and aesthetic appeal, a simple and low-cost fabrication process is required to deploy large-scale LSCs. Herein, we introduced a facile and cost-effective fabrication method to obtain laminated LSC (L-LSC) devices. By optimizing the fabrication parameters, L-LSC based on polymer substrates exhibited higher efficiency (power conversion efficiency, PCE=0.24%, external photon efficiency, ηext=4.14% and optical efficiency, ηopt=3.46%) compared to glass-based L-LSC (PCE=0.09%, ηext=1.59%, ηopt=1.76%) due to their excellent optical properties and good compatibility with the laminated emissive layer. Using the optimized L-LSC device, a color-tunable multilayered L-LSC structure is then proposed. By embedding different QDs into two interlayers, the color appearance of the device can be tuned, simultaneously improving the overall efficiency. This study presents a notable advancement towards a practical application of L-LSCs with a satisfactory efficiency and color aesthetics for sustainable BIPVs.
Solar light selective-harvesting eco-friendly colloidal quantum dots for transparent luminescent solar concentrators

Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) constructed using colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as a promising and cost-effective solution for transparent photovoltaics. However, the efficiency of these LSCs in converting sunlight to electricity often remains low due to limited quantum efficiency and significant reabsorption losses associated with the QDs. Furthermore, the majority of high-efficiency LSCs incorporate QDs containing heavy metals, curtailing their potential for widespread commercialization. Here, we have developed white-emitting CuGaS2/ZnS and its optical characteristics are adeptly tailored through manipulation of the ZnS shell. The optimal configuration of CuGaS2/ZnS demonstrates an impressive photoluminescence quantum yield of 80% and an extensive Stokes shift of similar to 190 nm. These QDs are integrated in a polymer matrix to produce LSCs with dimensions of 5 x 5 x 0.2 cm3. Under standard illumination conditions of one sun AM 1.5G (100 mW cm-2), these LSCs exhibit an optical efficiency of 1.7%, average visible transmittance of similar to 75% and color rendering index of 91.6. To improve the solar light harvesting, we constructed a tandem LSC, with CuGaS2/ZnS QD-LSC as the top layer and near-infrared-active AgInS2/ZnS QD-LSC was developed as the bottom layer. The optical efficiency could reach 4.4%, which underscores the potential of these environmentally friendly core/shell QDs for cost-effective transparent solar conversion applications. CuGaS2/ZnS quantum dots with a Stokes shift of similar to 190 nm and PLQY of 80% were developed for LSCs, which achieved an optical efficiency of 1.7%. A tandem configuration integrating near-infrared-active AgInS2/ZnS achieved an optical efficiency of 4.4%.

Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) have the potential to serve as energy-harvesting windows in buildings. Although recent advances in nanotechnology have led to the emergence of novel fluorophores such as quantum dots, perovskites and others, the commercialization of such functional glass remains immature due to an insufficient power conversion efficiency. In other words, improvements in fluorophores alone cannot fully maximize the potential of LSCs. Here we introduce a new laminated type of LSC structure where a patterned low-refractive-index medium acts as an optical 'guard rail', providing a practically non-decaying path for guiding photons. We also propose the design rules regarding the dimensions of LSCs and the spectral characteristics of fluorophores. Once these rules were applied, we achieved record-high LSC performance. The measured external quantum efficiencies at 450 nm are 45% for a 100 cm 2 area and 32% for the LSC with an edge aspect ratio of 71. The device efficiency is 7.6%, the highest value ever reported, to the best of our knowledge. These findings may have industrial implications and could accelerate the commercialization of LSCs.

Abstract:Abstract A luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) is a solar-light harvesting device that concentrates light on a photovoltaic cell placed at the edge of an LSC panel to convert it into electricity. The nano-sized inorganic–organic cluster complex (dMDAEMA) 4 [Re 6 S 8 (NCS) 6 ] (this refers to RMC where dMDAEMA is 2-dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate) is a promising candidate for LSC luminophores due to its downshifted broad photoluminescence suitable for photovoltaic cells. However, the low quantum yield (QY) of RMC limits the performance. Here, zinc-doped CuGaS/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (ZQD) were used as energy transferring donor with high QY to improve the performance of the LSC. The two metal chalcogenide luminophores, RMC and ZQD, are chemically suitable for dispersion in an amphiphilic polymer matrix, producing a transparent waveguide with suppressed reabsorption and extended harvesting coverage of the solar spectrum. We achieved an η opt of 3.47% and a PCE of 1.23% while maintaining greater than 80% transparency in the visible range. The high performance of this dual-dye LSC with suppressed reabsorption, and scattering losses is not only due to uniform dispersion of dyes in a polymer matrix, but also energy transfer from ZQD to RMC. This report suggests a new possibility for promising various multi-dye LSCs for use in building-integrated photovoltaic windows.

Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) hold the promise to make solar electricity more affordable by reducing the need for expensive photovoltaic cells and enabling less conventional forms of photovoltaics such as solar windows or roofs, and other architectural elements. Here we demonstrate the use of a polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) as an efficient light absorber in an LSC, combined with a red-emitting dye. The prepared prototype LSC displays a good internal efficiency (25.3%) and external efficiency (11.4%), and performance metrics that show promise for the use of polymers of intrinsic microporosity as light harvesters. This work significantly broadens the potential applications of PIMs beyond their more traditional functions in molecular separations and other adsorption-based processes.

Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) show great promise in reducing the cost of silicon solar cells due to their potential use for high-efficiency energy harvesting. Compared to narrow absorption organic dyes, quantum dots (QDs) are a favorable approach to acquire stable LSCs. However, the use of toxic heavy metals in QDs and the small Stokes shift largely restrict their development. Here, a toxic metal-free, highly luminescent ink based on a copper(I)-halide hybrid cluster is reported, whose quantum yield (QY) exceeds 68%. Under the interaction with halohydrocarbon, CuI and phenethylamine (PEA) can be easily dissolved and the ink can be facilely acquired. The obtained film exhibits strong orange light emission with a large Stokes shift. As a proof-of-concept experiment, (PEA)4Cu4I4 has been used to fabricate LSCs. The as-prepared LSC (4 cm × 4 cm × 0.3 cm) exhibits an internal quantum efficiency (ηint) as high as 44.1%. After coupling to a solar cell, an optical conversion efficiency (ηopt) of 6.85% is acquired from this LSC. In addition, the LSC possesses high stability such as air stability, water stability, and photostability. These results demonstrate that the (PEA)4Cu4I4 film can be employed as a promising candidate for large-area and high-efficiency LSCs.

Abstract:A luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) offers a viable solution to spectrally convert and concentrate both direct and diffuse sunlight without the need for tracking. Its potential for commercialization is currently limited by the optical performance. A detailed understanding of the effects of both waveguide and luminophore properties is crucial for designing efficient LSCs. Herein, a self-consistent modelling framework of radiative transfer in LSCs is presented to analyze these effects by incorporating all properties at multiple length scales. A modified radiative transfer equation (RTE) is derived capturing the requirement that both photon absorption and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) should occur simultaneously to trigger the PL emission. The Monte Carlo method is used to solve this modified RTE along with its boundary conditions. This framework is further employed to investigate the performance of LSCs doped with Lumogen F Red 305 (LFR305) dye. For the realistic scenarios, the transmission loss forms the main loss mechanism and accounts for 72.6–92.1% depending on the specific dimensions and LFR305 doping. An external photon efficiency of 13.0% is predicted for an LSC of 20 × 20 × 0.5 cm 3 with a dye concentration of 5 × 10 −4 mol/L. As to the hypothetical scenarios, the waveguide refractive index affects both the top reflection and the escape cone losses, while in contrast, the PLQY and the Stokes shift mainly affect the QY loss. Future efforts on LSC optimization should be directed towards reducing the transmission loss.

Abstract:Traditional concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) systems utilize multijunction cells to minimize thermalization losses, but cannot efficiently capture diffuse sunlight, which contributes to a high levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and limits their use to geographical regions with high direct sunlight insolation. Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) harness light generated by luminophores embedded in a light-trapping waveguide to concentrate light onto smaller cells. LSCs can absorb both direct and diffuse sunlight, and thus can operate as flat plate receivers at a fixed tilt and with a conventional module form factor. However, current LSCs experience significant power loss through parasitic luminophore absorption and incomplete light trapping by the optical waveguide. Here we introduce a tandem LSC device architecture that overcomes both of these limitations, consisting of a PLMA polymer layer with embedded CdSe/CdS quantum dot (QD) luminophores and InGaP micro-cells, which serve as a high bandgap absorber on top of a conventional Si photovoltaic. We experimentally synthesize CdSe/CdS QDs with exceptionally high quantum-yield (99%) and ultra-narrowband emission optimally matched to fabricated III-V InGaP micro-cells. Using a Monte Carlo ray-tracing model, we show the radiative limit power conversion efficiency for a module with these components to be 30.8% diffuse sunlight conditions. These results indicate that a tandem LSC-on-Si architecture could significantly improve upon the efficiency of a conventional Si photovoltaic module with simple and straightforward alterations of the module lamination steps of a Si photovoltaic manufacturing process, with promise for widespread module deployment across diverse geographical regions and energy markets.

Abstract:In this study, we fabricated LSCs using pyrrolopyrazine-based organic fluorophore (PP2) with an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) function and aggregation-induced emission. PP2 incorporates unique features, including an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) function and aggregation-induced emission. The pyrrolopyrazine core of PP2 is decorated with an electron-rich dimethylamine group and two electron-poor cyano groups, enhancing its potential for light harvesting in LSC applications. In the polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) matrix, PP2 showed strong absorption near ultraviolet (395 nm–406 nm), emitted green-colored visible light (474 nm–478 nm), and exhibited a photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQY) of 67%. The external photon efficiency (η ext ) and internal photon efficiency (η int ) of the fabricated LSC under AM 1.5G illumination (1 sun) were 3.36% and 39.1%, respectively. Subsequently, we conducted an analytical simulation to estimate the η ext and the η int as the dimensions of the LSC were scaled up. In addition, the photovoltaic performance measurement under 1 sun showed a power conversion efficiency (η PCE ) of 1.074% with a scattering background and 0.633% without a scattering background. Thus, this research introduces PP2 as a novel fluorophore with promising prospects for advancing the field of LSC technology.

Abstract:A luminescent solar concentrator (LSC), an optically transparent slab with high refractive index, infused with emissive luminophores, absorbs, re-emits and concentrates solar energy to the edges of a waveguide. This work aims to develop an efficient Monte-Carlo Ray-tracking algorithm to track the photon's excursion in LSC. The efficiency largely depends upon the optical properties of both luminophores and the slab waveguides. Two frameworks contribute here: (i) luminophores' optimal optical properties and (ii) design of the waveguide. Three colloidal QD-based systems (AgInS 2 /ZnS, ClSeS/ZnS and CuInS 2 ) are employed and the ClSeS/ZnS QD-based LSC demonstrates the highest efficiency of 12.5% at a concentration of 200 ppm. Interestingly, a multi-QD approach in a single LSC device yields 17.2% efficiency which is 27.3% improvement over single QDs. By adjusting the luminophore emission angle from 45° to 90° the efficiency enhances by 2%. Future applications of the work include ecofriendly, sustainable renewable energy sources with long-term stability.

Abstract:The use of a luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) with a high geometric gain is one of the methods to achieve low cost of photovoltaic power. However, the self-absorption loss of the LSC is a restraining factor working against the gain. Differed from organic dyes, the hybrid dyes (rare earth complexes), composed of organic antenna and inorganic emitting ions, have very low self-absorption losses. A hybrid solar concentrator (HSC) has been fabricated by doping a rare earth complex, Eu(TTA)3Phen, into a polymer optical fiber (POF). Experiments on the HSC show that there is no self-absorption loss, and the emission photons increase linearly with geometric gain (increasing from around 50 to approximately 200).
Theoretical Study of WS-9-Based Organic Sensitizers for Unusual Vis/NIR Absorption and Highly Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are the most promising low-cost photovoltaic devices. Whereas, the absorption bands of most organic sensitizers, the most vital component in DSSCs, are limited to a relatively narrow visible range. To obtain efficient sensitizer, a series of D-A-pi-A metal-free dyes have been designed based on one of the best sensitizers WS-9 by modifying auxiliary acceptor and characterized theoretically. The results illustrate that introduction of auxiliary heterocycle acceptor is revealed to very narrow band gap (HOMO-LUMO), leading to an obvious red-shifted broad near-infrared absorption band in the range of 750-1950 nm compared to WS-9 (536 nm). The critical parameters in close connection with the short-circuit current density (J(sc)), open circuit voltage (V-oc), including singlet excited state lifetime (tau), total dipole moments (mu(normal)), the conduction band of edge of the semiconductor substrate (Delta E-CB), and regeneration driving forces (Delta G(reg)) are superior to those of WS-9. Therefore, these novel sensitizers would be a promising candidate for improving the performance of the DSSCs.
Broadband Enhancement of Light Harvesting in a Luminescent Solar Concentrator

Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) are large-area devices that absorb incident sunlight and emit luminescence photons with high quantum efficiency, which will finally be collected by a small photovoltaic (PV) system. The light-harvesting area of the PV system is much smaller than that of the LSC system, potentially reducing the cost of solar cells. Here, we present a theoretical description of the luminescent process in nanoscale LSCs where the conventional ray-optics model is no longer applicable. We demonstrate that a slot waveguide consisting of a nanometer-sized low-index slot region sandwiched by two high-index regions provides a broadband enhancement of light harvesting by the luminescent centers in the slot region. This is because the slot waveguide can 1) greatly enhance the spontaneous emission due to the Purcell effect, 2) dramatically increase the effective absorption length of luminescent centers, and 3) strongly improve the fluorescence quantum yield of luminescent centers. It is found that about 80% solar photons can be re-emitted even for a low fluorescent quantum yield of 0.5, and 80% re-emitted photons can be coupled to the slot waveguide. This LSC has the potential to be constructed in to a tandem structure which can absorb nearly full-spectrum solar photons, and also may be of special interest for building integrated nano-solar-cell applications.

Abstract:The performance degradation is still a challenge for the development of conventional polymer luminescent solar concentrator (LSC). Liquid LSC (L-LSC) may be an alternative due to polymerization-free fabrication. Here, we have prepared a CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs)-based L-LSC by injecting the QDs solution into a self-assembly quartz glass mold. The as-fabricated L-LSC performance is evaluated by optical characterization and photo-electrical measurement. The external quantum efficiency of the L-LSC is up to 13.44%. After coupling the commercial solar cell, the optimal optical efficiency reaches 2.32%. These results demonstrate that L-LSC may provide a promising direction for advanced solar light harvesting technologies.
Photocurrent Enhancement In Plasmonic Solar Cells Attached To Luminescent Solar Concentrators

Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) generally consist of transparent polymer sheets doped with luminescent species. Incident sunlight is absorbed by the luminescent species and emitted with high quantum efficiency, so that the emitted light is trapped in the sheets and travels to the edges where it can be collected by solar cells. Unlike regular solar spectrum, the emission spectrum of LSCs based on Lumogen Red dye red shifts and concentrates to a small range of wavelengths (600nm to 700nm). Therefore, hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H), whose bandgap is around 750nm, can absorb the emission light without many thermalization losses.Due to the low diffusion lengths in a-Si:H, thin absorbing layer should be applied, causing insufficient light absorbance. In this letter, we propose a structure that coupling nanostructured plasmonic back contact to LSC solar cell. After optimization, numerical results show that the photocurrent intensity increases by a factor of 1.30 compared with LSC solar cells with randomly textured back contacts. In contrast, when illuminated by one Sun, the photocurrent for textured cell compares to that for nanostructured cell.The remarkable photocurrent enhancement in LSC cells is attributed to two main reasons. First, the wavelengths, where nanostructured cell shows higher absorbance compared with textured one, are identical with the emission peak of LSC. Second, the light interferences constructed in flat cells, which cause the absorbance curve to red shift and match with the emission spectrum, are depressed in textured cell, but are maintained in nanostructured cell. Optical characterization and photo-electrical measurement of luminescent solar concentrators based on perovskite quantum dots integrated into the thiol-ene polymer

Abstract:The luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) has attracted worldwide attention as a sunlight manager for harvesting solar energy in building integrated photovoltaic structures. However, until now the relatively low optical efficiency (ηopt) still severely hinders the advancement of the LSCs. In this work, we report the perovskite quantum dots (QDs) integrated into the thiol-ene polymer for LSC applications. After encapsulated by the thiol-ene polymer, the CsPbBr3 QDs exhibit a slight blue-shift of the PL peak position and increasing FWHM because of the dielectric screen effect. With the different QDs' concentrations from 8.3 × 10−3 to 2.5 × 10−2 mg/ml, the LSC performance is evaluated by the direct optical characterization and the indirect photo-electrical measurement in detail. After coupling the PV cells, the as-fabricated LSC shows the optimal optical efficiency of 2.11% and the power conversion efficiency of 1.06%.

Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) are spectral conversion devices offering interesting opportunities for integration of photovoltaics into the built environment and portable systems. The Förster‐resonance energy transfer (FRET) process can boost the optical response of LSCs by reducing energy losses typically associated to non‐radiative processes occurring within the device under operation. In this work, a new class of FRET‐based thin‐film LSC devices is presented, in which the synthetic versatility of linear polyurethanes (PU) is exploited to control the photophysical properties and the device performance of the resulting LSCs. A series of luminescent linear PUs are synthesized in the presence of two novel bis‐hydroxyl‐functionalized luminophores of suitable optical properties, used as chain extenders during the step‐growth polyaddition reaction for the formation of the linear macromolecular network. By synthetically tuning their composition, the obtained luminescent PUs can achieve a high energy transfer efficiency (∼90%) between the covalently linked luminophores. The corresponding LSC devices exhibit excellent photonic response, with external and internal photon efficiencies as high as ∼4% and ∼37%, respectively. Furthermore, their optimized power conversion efficiency combined with their enhanced average visible‐light transmittance highlight their suitability for potential use as transparent solar energy devices. Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) are able to concentrate both direct and diffuse solar radiation, and this ability has led to great interest in using them to improve solar energy capture when coupled to traditional photovoltaics (PV). In principle, a large-area LSC could concentrate light onto a much smaller area of PV, thus reducing costs or enabling new architectures. However, LSCs suffer from various optical losses which are hard to quantify using simple measurements of power conversion efficiency. Here, we show that spatially resolved photoluminescence quantum efficiency measurements on large-area LSCs can be used to resolve various loss processes such as out-coupling, self-absorption via emitters, and self-absorption from the LSC matrix. Further, these measurements allow for the extrapolation of device performance to arbitrarily large LSCs. Our results provide insight into the optimization of optical properties and guide the design of future LSCs for improved solar energy capture.
