Abstract:In this study, a sonochemical approach was utilised for the development of graphene-gold (G-Au) nanocomposite. Through the sonochemical method, simultaneous exfoliation of graphite and the reduction of gold chloride occurs to produce highly crystalline G-Au nanocomposite. The in situ growth of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) took place on the surface of exfoliated few-layer graphene sheets. The G-Au nanocomposite was characterised by UV-vis, XRD, FTIR, TEM, XPS and Raman spectroscopy techniques. This G-Au nanocomposite was used to modify glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to fabricate an electrochemical sensor for the selective detection of nitric oxide (NO), a critical cancer biomarker. G-Au modified GCE exhibited an enhanced electrocatalytic response towards the oxidation of NO as compared to other control electrodes. The electrochemical detection of NO was investigated by linear sweep voltammetry analysis, utilising the G-Au modified GCE in a linear range of 10-5000μM which exhibited a limit of detection of 0.04μM (S/N=3). Furthermore, this enzyme-free G-Au/GCE exhibited an excellent selectivity towards NO in the presence of interferences. The synergistic effect of graphene and AuNPs, which facilitated exceptional electron-transfer processes between the electrolyte and the GCE thereby improving the sensing performance of the fabricated G-Au modified electrode with stable and reproducible responses. This G-Au nanocomposite introduces a new electrode material in the sensitive and selective detection of NO, a prominent biomarker of cancer.
Copper Nanoparticles Confined in a Silica Nanochannel Film for the Electrochemical Detection of Nitrate Ions in Water Samples

Abstract:The nitrate ion (NO3−) is a typical pollutant in environmental samples, posing a threat to the aquatic ecosystem and human health. Therefore, rapid and accurate detection of NO3− is crucial for both the aquatic sciences and government regulations. Here we report the fabrication of an amino-functionalized, vertically ordered mesoporous silica film (NH2-VMSF) confining localized copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) for the electrochemical detection of NO3−. NH2-VMSF-carrying amino groups possess an ordered perpendicular nanochannel structure and ultrasmall nanopores, enabling the confined growth of CuNPs through the electrodeposition method. The resulting CuNPs/NH2-VMSF-modified indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode (CuNPs/NH2-VMSF/ITO) combines the electrocatalytic reduction ability of CuNPs and the electrostatic attraction capacity of NH2-VMSF towards NO3−. Thus, it is a rapid and sensitive electrochemical method for the determination of NO3− with a wide linear detection range of 5.0–1000 μM and a low detection limit of 2.3 μM. Direct electrochemical detection of NO3− in water samples (tap water, lake water, seawater, and rainwater) with acceptable recoveries ranging from 97.8% to 109% was performed, demonstrating that the proposed CuNPs/NH2-VMSF/ITO sensor has excellent reproducibility, regeneration, and anti-interference abilities.

Abstract:A nitrogen-doped carbon shell loaded with a gold and silver alloy (Au/Ag@NCS) was constructed for highly sensitive electrochemical detection of NO. The Au/Ag@NCS material was prepared by use of SiO 2 particles as a template to polymerize imidazolium-based ionic liquids loaded with gold and silver salts, and subsequent carbonization treatment and template removal. The hollow structure of the carbon material acted as a carrier for electrochemical sensing, offering high specific surface area, large pore capacity, robust electron conductivity, and excellent mechanical stability. The inclusion of gold in the composite enhanced its catalytic and sensing capabilities, while silver oxidation was employed as a reference signal for accurate detection. By utilization of the Au/Ag@NCS-modified electrode, a wide detection range from 0.5 nM to 1.05 μM with a low detection limit of 0.32 nM was achieved for NO detection. The electrochemical sensor also exhibited high selectivity and excellent stability. The fabricated sensor was further utilized to explore the release of NO from breast cancer cells, revealing that the electrochemical platform could be regarded as an important method to study the daily tests of NO in clinical application.

Morphological Effects of Au Nanoparticles on Electrochemical Sensing Platforms for Nitrite Detection

Abstract:Au nanoparticles were synthesized in a soft template of pseudo-polyanions composed of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) by the in situ reduction of chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) with PVP. The particle sizes and morphologies of the Au nanoparticles were regulated with concentrations of PVP or SDS at room temperature. Distinguished from the Au nanoparticles with various shapes, Au nanoflowers (AuNFs) with rich protrusion on the surface were obtained at the low final concentration of SDS and PVP. The typical AuNF synthesized in the PVP (50 g·L−1)–SDS (5 mmol·L−1)–HAuCl4 (0.25 mmol·L−1) solution exhibited a face-centered cubic structure dominated by a {111} crystal plane with an average equivalent particle size of 197 nm and an average protrusion height of 19 nm. Au nanoparticles with four different shapes, nanodendritic, nanoflower, 2D nanoflower, and nanoplate, were synthesized and used to modify the bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to obtain Au/GCEs, which were assigned as AuND/GCE, AuNF/GCE, 2D-AuNF/GCE, and AuNP/GCE, respectively. Electrochemical sensing platforms for nitrite detection were constructed by these Au/GCEs, which presented different detection sensitivity for nitrites. The results of cyclic voltammetry (CV) demonstrated that the AuNF/GCE exhibited the best detection sensitivity for nitrites, and the surface area of the AuNF/GCE was 1.838 times of the bare GCE, providing a linear c(NO2−) detection range of 0.01–5.00 μmol·L−1 with a limit of detection of 0.01 μmol·L−1. In addition, the AuNF/GCE exhibited good reproducibility, stability, and high anti-interference, providing potential for application in electrochemical sensing platforms.

Abstract:The integration of large surface area and high catalytic profiles of Cu-MOF and CuO nanoparticles is¬†described toward electrochemical sensing of nitric oxide (NO) in a microfluidic platform. The CuO/Cu-MOF nanocomposite was prepared through hydrothermal method, and its formation was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The CuO/Cu-MOF nanostructured modified Au electrodes enabled electrocatalytic NO oxidation at 0.6¬†V vs. reference electrode, demonstrating linear response over a broad concentration range of 0.03‚Äď1¬†őľM and 1‚Äď500¬†őľM with a¬†detection limit of 7.8¬†nM. The interference effect of organic molecules and common ions was negligible, and the sensing system demonstrated excellent stability. Finally, an electrochemical microfluidic NO sensor was developed to detect of NO released from cancer cells, which were stimulated by L-arginine. Furthermore, in the presence of Fe3+, the stressed cells produced more NO. This work offers considerable potential for its practical applications in clinical diagnostics through determination of chemical symptoms in microliter-volume biological samples.

Abstract:Nanoporous gold (NPG) is a type of functional material that has been extensively investigated. Herein, a solid-phase reaction method was used to develop in situ NPG thin-film comprising Au nanobranch structures. The proposed method was found to be simple, fast and without complicated procedures. Electrochemical detection of nitrite was performed through cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry. Test results demonstrated that the improved catalytic behaviour of the NPG for nitrite electrooxidation reaction is highly dependent on its unique morphology. These findings are expected to provide an effective and rational pathway for the design and optimization of nitrite electrochemical sensors. (C) 2020 The Electrochemical Society ("ECS"). Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) decorated bimetallic CuNi-based hollow nanoarchitecture (CNHN) are reported for the first time as a nonenzymatic sensor for the quantification of nitrite in neutral solution . The CNHN was prepared via a convenient calcining routine using the bimetallic CuNi-MOFs as a coprecursor. The unique chemical structure of hollow CNHN with high specific surface area and abundant terminal amino groups effectively avoid the aggregation of AuNPs and facilitate the subsequent adsorption of nitrite. The Au/CNHN exhibited high electrocatalytic activity towards nitrite oxidation due to the synergetic catalytic effect of AuNPs and CNHN. Chronoamperometric detection of nitrite at the Au/CNHN/GCE achieved a lower linear calibration range of 0.05 to 1.15 mM, with an LOD of 0.017 μM compared with previous reports. The proposed method obtained satisfactory recoveries for nitrite determination in practical applications, which was verified by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The prepared sensor based on Au/CNHN featured favorable selectivity and stability, which provides a promising approach for real sample analysis.

Abstract:Gallium nitride (GaN) nanowires anchored on the surface of cost-effective pencil graphite electrodes (PGEs) have been developed as a new disposable nitric oxide (NO) sensor through a hydrothermal method followed by annealing treatment. The as-obtained nanomaterials were examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and EIS. Concurrently, the electrocatalytic performance has been analyzed using cyclic voltammetry and amperometric measurements. The experimental results exhibit good electrochemical sensing performance toward the generated NO in NO2– with a wide linear detection range of 1.0 μM to 1.0 mM with a correlation coefficient of 0.999 and a detection limit of 0.180 μM. In addition, the GaN nanowire-modified PGE surface showed high selectivity for the detection of NO as compared to other relevant biomolecules. This confirms that the PGE/GaN nanowire is a new promising electrochemical sensor for the sensitive detection of NO.

Abstract:An ultrasensitive and high-performance electrochemical nitrite sensing platform based on gold nanoparticles deposited on poly (dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride)-decorated MXene (Ti3C2Tx) (AuNPs/Ti3C2Tx-PDDA) was constructed. AuNPs/Ti3C2Tx-PDDA on the surface of electrode displayed synergetic catalytic effect for oxidizing NO2‾ originating from especially catalytic activity of AuNPs, large area and excellent conductivity of Ti3C2Tx, as well as electrostatic interaction of PDDA. The amperometry technique was employed for quantitative determination of nitrite, in which the AuNPs/Ti3C2Tx-PDDA/GCE sensing platform showed outstanding linear relationship in 0.1–2490 μM and 2490–13490 μM for nitrite, meanwhile the detection limit of 0.059 μM. Besides, the prepared sensor possessed high sensitivity of 250 μA mM−1 cm−2 yet excellent selectivity, stability and reproducibility. Furthermore, this platform also exhibited satisfactory feasibility of nitrite sensing in running water and ham sausage sample. This work would broaden a facile approach to construct high sensitivity electrochemical sensing platform via two-dimension materials and its nanocomposites.

Abstract:We have developed a novel nitric oxide (NO) cellular biosensor based upon the immobilization of red blood cells (RBCs) onto nanometer-size colloidal gold that is attached to an electrochemically pretreated glassy carbon electrode via the bridging of an ethylenediamine monolayer. The biosensor has been characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electrochemistry. The immobilized RBCs display an excellent electrocatalytic response to nitric oxide. The electrocatalytic currents are proportional to the NO concentration in the range from 1.0 x 10(-8) to 1.0 x 10(-6) M and the detection limit is as low as 5.0 x 10(-9) M (S/N=3). Furthermore, the biosensor is very stable and relatively free of potential interference.

Abstract:A highly sensitive amperometric gas-phase nitric oxide (NO) sensor based on a Pt working electrode chemically deposited on a Nafion film is described. The Pt electrode is chemically deposited on a Nafion 117 membrane by impregnating the film with Pt(NH3)4(2+) ions, which are then exposed to NaBH4 to precipitate conductive Pt metal. The sensor was characterized with a mass-flow controlled 1 ppm NO standard gas and has an electrochemical surface area of 34 ± 9 cm(2), low limits of detection (4.3 ± 1.1 ppb) and a fast response time (<5s) toward changes in gas phase NO levels. Good correlation was found for measurements with the new amperometric Pt-Nafion sensor vs. chemiluminescence results for detecting the rates of NO release from Carbosil2080A polymer films doped with S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (R = 0.999, m = 0.999, n = 6) and for electrochemical reduction of nitrite to NO (R = 0.999, m = 0.938, n = 3) mediated by a copper(II)-tri(2-pyridylmethyl)amine complex.

Abstract:This work describes the development of graphene oxide‐based nanocomposites functionalized with 3‐aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (GO‐APTMS) and 3‐mercaptopropyltrimehtoxysilane (GO‐MPTS), onto which silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are grown. These nanocomposites are immobilized onto glassy carbon (GC) electrodes for electrochemical sensing of nitrite ions (NO2−) in various samples. The study involved thorough material characterization and demonstrated that the resulting modified electrodes (GC/GO‐APTMS/AgNPs and GC/GO‐MPTS/AgNPs) exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity, displaying wide calibration ranges, low detection limits, high sensitivity, and stability for NO2− determination. Real sample analysis of tomato ketchup validate the sensors′ reliability in detecting nitrite levels in food samples, showcasing potential applications in environmental and food quality monitoring. Nitrite is a significant environmental pollutant present in industrial waste water, food additives, detergents, and physiological systems. Therefore, an effective electrochemical sensor is essential for nitrite determination. Accordingly in this work, graphene oxide (GO) is functionalized with 3‐aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (GO‐APTMS) and 3‐mercaptopropyltrimehtoxysilane (GO‐MPTS). Further, Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were grown on GO‐MPTS (GO‐MPTS/AgNPs) and GO‐APTMS (GO‐APTMS/AgNPs). GO‐APTMS/AgNPs and GO‐MPTS/AgNPs are characterized by different spectroscopic and microscopic techniques such as Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR), UV‐vis and powder X‐ray diffraction(p‐XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) with selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and energy dispersive X‐ray analysis (EDAX). The nanocomposites, GO‐APTMS/AgNPs and GO‐MPTS/AgNPs are immobilized on glassy carbon (GC) electrode and abbreviated as GC/GO‐APTMS/AgNPs and GC/GO‐MPTS/AgNPs, respectively. It exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of NO2−. It shows the broad calibration range from 0.1 μM to 1 mM. The detection limit for NO2− is 90 nM and 80 nM for GC/GO‐APTMS/AgNPs and GC/GO‐MPTS/AgNPs, respectively. GC/GO‐APTMS/AgNPs and GC/GO‐MPTS/AgNPs exhibit sensitivity of 0.26 μA μM−1cm−2 and 0.46 μA μM−1 cm−2, respectively for NO2− determination. The modified electrode, GC/GO‐APTMS/AgNPs and GC/GO‐MPTS/AgNPs exhibit a wide calibration range, low detection limit, high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability for NO2− determination. Real sample analysis of tomato ketchup was performed at GC/GO‐APTMS/AgNPs and GC/GO‐MPTS/AgNPs with reliable recovery.

Abstract:Real-time monitoring of nitric oxide (NO) is of great importance in diagnosing the physiological functions of neurotransmission, cardiovascular, and immune systems. This study reports the carbon nanotube-interconnected ruthenium phthalocyanine nanoparticle nanocomposite and its applicability in construction of an electrochemical platform, which could real-time detect NO released from the vascular endothelial barrier (VEB) model in cell culture medium. The nanocomposite exhibits regular morphology, uniform particle size, and excellent electro-catalytic activity to electrochemical oxidation of NO. Under optimal conditions, the electrochemical device has high sensitivity (0.871 μA μM −1 ) and can selectively detect NO down to the concentration of 6 × 10 −10 M. The human brain microvascular endothelial cells were cultured onto the Transwell support to construct the VEB model. Upon stimulated by L-arginine, NO produced by the VEB diffuses into the bottom chamber of the Transwell, and is real-time monitored by the electrochemical device. Moreover, evaluation of the NO inhibition by drug is realized using the electrochemical device-Transwell platform. This simple and sensitive platform would be of great interesting for evaluating the endothelial function or its pathological states, and screening the related drugs or chemicals.

Fluorinated xerogel-derived microelectrodes for amperometric nitric oxide sensing

Abstract:An amperometric fluorinated xerogel-derived nitric oxide (NO) microelectrode is described. A range of fluorine-modified xerogel polymers were synthesized via the cohydrolysis and condensation of alkylalkoxy- and fluoroalkoxysilanes. Such polymers were evaluated as NO sensor membranes to identify the optimum composition for maximizing NO permeability while providing sufficient selectivity for NO in the presence of common interfering species. By taking advantage of both the versatility of sol-gel chemistry and the "poly(tetrafluoroethylene)-like" high NO permselective properties of the xerogels, the performance of the fluorinated xerogel-derived sensors was excellent, surpassing all miniaturized NO sensors reported to date. In contrast to previous electrochemical NO sensor designs, xerogel-based NO microsensors were fabricated using a simple, reliable dip-coating procedure. An optimal permselective membrane was achieved by synthesizing xerogels of methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMOS) and 20% (heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetrahydrodecyl)trimethoxysilane (17FTMS, balance MTMOS) under acid-catalyzed conditions. The resulting NO microelectrode had a conical tip of approximately 20 microm in diameter and approximately 55 microm in length and exhibited sensitivities of 7.91 pA x nM (-1) from 0.2 to 3.0 nM (R (2) = 0.9947) and 7.60 nA x microM (-1) from 0.5 to 4.0 microM ( R (2) = 0.9999), detection limit of 83 pM (S/ N = 3), response time ( t 95%) of <3 s, and selectivity (log K NO, j (amp)) of -5.74, <-6, <-6, <-6, <-6, -5.84, and -1.33 for j = nitrite, ascorbic acid, uric acid, acetaminophen, dopamine, ammonia/ammonium, and carbon monoxide. In addition, the sensor proved functional up to 20 d, maintaining >or=90% of the sensor's initial sensitivity without serious deterioration in selectivity.

Abstract:Bone graft is widely used within orthopaedic surgery especially in revision joint arthroplasty and spine fusion. The early implant fixation in the revision situation of loose joint prostheses is important for the long-term survival. Bone autograft has been considered as gold standard in many orthopaedic procedures, whereas allograft is the gold standard by replacement of extensive bone loss. However, the use of autograft is associated with donor site morbidity, especially chronic pain. In addition, the limited supply is a significant clinical challenge. Limitations in the use of allograft include the risk of bacterial contamination and disease transmission as well as non-union and poor bone quality. Other bone graft and substitutes have been considered as alternative in order to improve implant fixation. Hydroxyapatite and collagen type I composite (HA/Collagen) have the potential in mimicking skeletal bones. The osteoconductive properties of the composite might be improved by adding bone marrow aspirate (BMA), which can be harvested during surgery. Other alternatives to bone graft are demineralised bone matrix (DBM) and human cancellous bone (CB). DBM is prepared by acid extraction of human bone and includes bone collagen, morphogenetic proteins and growth factors. The combination of DBM with CB and with allograft might improve the healing potential of these grafts around non-cemented orthopaedic implants and thereby the implant fixation. Study I investigates the effect of HA/Collagen composite alone and in combination with BMA on the early fixation of porous coated titanium implants. In addition, the study compares also the effect of autograft with the gold standard allograft. By using a sheep model, the implants were inserted in the trabecular bone of femoral condyles. The test biomaterials were placed in a well defined peri-implant gap. After the observation period, the bone-implant specimens were harvested and evaluated mechanically by a destructive push-out test and analyzed histologically qualitatively and quantitatively. Study II investigates the effect of DBM alone and in combination with CB or allograft. The control group in study I and II was allograft. Study III is a methodological study and investigates the potential systematic bias by applying the traditional sampling method, which includes evaluating the mechanical fixation by using the superficial part and the histological analysis by using the profound part of the implant. The implants in this study were inserted in the proximal humerus and only allograft was used in the peri-implant gap. In study I, the mechanical testing showed failure by the preloading in the composite group with and without BMA. There were no bone ongrowth and sparely bone formation in the gap by the composite group. Adding BMA to the composite has no beneficial effect on implant fixation. No significant difference between autograft and allograft on mechanical fixation, bone ongrowth and bone formation. In study II the combination of DBM with CB or allograft showed no significant differences on the mechanical testing and histological analysis to the control group, whereas DBM alone showed significant low mechanical fixation, low bone ongrowth and low bone formation. Study III showed no significant difference between the sampling methods. In conclusion, HA/Collagen composite alone or in combination with BMA has no effect on the early fixation of porous coated titanium implants. Autograft has comparable effect on allograft with regard to early implant fixation. The combination of DBM with CB may represent an alternative to allograft. In study III, mechanical testing and histological analysis can be applied either from the superficial or the profound part of the implant. By applying the histological analysis from the superficial part and the mechanical testing from the profound part, an extra section is required.
Development of a nanozyme-based electrochemical catalyst for real-time biomarker sensing of superoxide and nitric oxide anions released from living cells and exogenous donors

Abstract:Developing quantitative biosensors of superoxide (O2•-) and nitric oxide (NO) anion is crucial for pathological research. As of today, the main challenge for electrochemical detection is to develop high-selectivity nano-mimetic materials to replace natural enzymes. In this study, the dendritic-like morphological structure of silver organic framework (Ag-MOF) was successfully synthesized via a solvothermal strategy. Owing to the introduction of polymeric composites results in improved electrical conductivity and catalytic activity, which promotes mass transfer and leads to faster electron efficiency. For monitoring the electrochemical signals of O2•- and NO, the Ag-MOF electrode substrate was produced by drop-coating, and composites were designed by cyclic voltammetric potential cycles. The designed electrode substrates demonstrate high sensitivity, wide linear concentrations of 1 nM-1000 μM and 1 nM-850 μM, and low detection limits of 0.27 nM and 0.34 nM (S/N = 3) against O2•- and NO. Aside from that, the sensor successfully monitored the cellular release of O2•-, and NO from HepG2 and RAW 264.7 living cells and has the potential to monitor exogenous NO release from donors of Diethylamine (DEA)-NONOate and sodium nitroprusside (SNP). Additionally, the developed system was applied to the analysis of O2•- and NO in real biological fluid samples, and the results were good satisfactory (94.10-99.57 ± 1.23%). The designed system provides a novel approach to obtaining a good electrochemical biosensor platform that is highly selective, stable, and flexible. Finally, the proposed method provides a quantitative way to follow the dynamic changes in O2•- and NO in biological systems.
Ultrathin Ni-MOF Nanobelts-Derived Composite for High Sensitive Detection of Nitrite

Abstract:In this paper, the Ni/NiO ultrathin nanobelts were successively synthesized by a facile in suit conversion process using pre-synthesized Ni-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) nanobelts as parent materials to detect the nitrite (NaNO2). The synthesized Ni/NiO composites have the advantages in structure, as follows: (I) Interleaved 3D reticulated structure has strong mechanical stability; (II) Ultrathin nanobelt structures allow more active sites to be exposed and make the transfer of charge faster; (III) A large number of ultrafine Ni nanoparticles decorate the building blocks of the NiO nanobelt and enhance the electrical conductivity. Ni/NiO/GCE has an obvious oxidation peak at 0.78 V, when the concentration is between 0.5 and 1000 μM, the oxidation peak current of NaNO2 is linearly related to the concentration, and the sensitivity is 1.5319 μA mM-1 cm-2 (S/N = 3). Moreover, the experimental results also concluded that the Ni/NiO ultrathin nanobelts not only indicated wonderful reproducibility in the determination of NaNO2 in the pickled pork samples, but also could be well-recovered and keep stable for a long time.
Enhanced His@AuNCs oxidase-like activity by reduced graphene oxide and its application for colorimetric and electrochemical detection of nitrite

Abstract:Enzyme-mimicking (nanozyme)-based biosensors are attractive owing to their unique catalytic efficiency, multifunctionality, and tunable activity, but examples of oxidase-like nanozymes are quite rare. Herein, we demonstrated that histidine-capped gold nanoclusters (His@AuNCs) possessed intrinsic oxidase-like activity, which could directly oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue colored ox-TMB without H2O2. The assembly of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) with His@AuNCs could further improve its oxidase-like activity and the His@AuNCs/RGO nanocomposites had a lower Michaelis constant (Km) and higher catalytic constant (Kcat) for TMB oxidation. Furthermore, compared to other nanomaterials, the as-prepared His@AuNCs/RGO also exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward TMB. Interestingly, nitrite inhibited the catalytic (chromogenic) and electrocatalytic processes of His@AuNCs/RGO in the oxidation of TMB. The oxidase-like and electrocatalytic activity of His@AuNCs/RGO was evaluated with nitrite and TMB as substrates, and the results indicated that TMB and nitrite might share the same catalytic active sites. On the basis of these findings, a colorimetric and electrochemical sensor was developed with the His@AuNCs/RGO composite as an oxidase mimic for determination of nitrite with linear ranges of 10–500 μM and 2.5–5700 μM, respectively. The developed method was successfully applied to the detection of nitrites in real samples. The present work suggests that the oxidase-like nanozyme is not only suitable for colorimetric assay but also for development of electrochemical sensors in bioanalysis.The colorimetric and electrochemical detection of nitrite using His@AuNCs/RGO.

Abstract:We describe a highly sensitive and selective amperometric sensor for the determination of nitrite. A glassy carbon electrode was modified with a composite made from gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and sulfonated graphene (SG). The modified electrode displays excellent electrocatalytic activity in terms of nitrite oxidation by giving much higher peak currents (at even lower oxidation overpotential) than those found for the bare electrode, the AuNPs-modified electrode, and the SG-modified electrode. The sensor has a linear response in the 10 μM to 3.96 mM concentration range, a very good detection sensitivity (45.44 μA mM −1 ), and a lower detection limit of 0.2 μM of nitrite. Most common ions and many environmental organic pollutants do not interfere. The sensor was successfully applied to the determination of nitrite in water samples, and the results were found to be consistent with the values obtained by spectrophotometry.
