Abstract:A mixed design was created using text and game-like multimedia to instruct in the content of physics. The study assessed which variables predicted learning gains after a 1-h lesson on the electric field. The three manipulated variables were: (1) level of embodiment; (2) level of active generativity; and (3) presence of story narrative. Two types of tests were administered: (1) a traditional text-based physics test answered with a keyboard; and (2) a more embodied, transfer test using the Wacom large tablet where learners could use gestures (long swipes) to create vectors and answers. The 166 participants were randomly assigned to four conditions: (1) symbols and text; (2) low embodied; (3) high embodied/active; or (4) high embodied/active with narrative. The last two conditions were active because the on-screen content could be manipulated with gross body gestures gathered via the Kinect sensor. Results demonstrated that the three groups that included embodiment learned significantly more than the symbols and text group on the traditional keyboard post-test. When knowledge was assessed with the Wacom tablet format that facilitated gestures, the two active gesture-based groups scored significantly higher. In addition, engagement scores were significantly higher for the two active embodied groups. The Wacom results suggest test sensitivity issues; the more embodied test revealed greater gains in learning for the more embodied conditions. We recommend that as more embodied learning comes to the fore, more sensitive tests that incorporate gesture be used to accurately assess learning. The predicted differences in engagement and learning for the condition with the graphically rich story narrative were not supported. We hypothesize that a narrative effect for motivation and learning may be difficult to uncover in a lab experiment where participants are primarily motivated by course credit. Several design principles for mediated and embodied science education are proposed.
Examining the Effects of Embodied Interaction Modalities on Students’ Retention Skills in a Real Classroom Context

Abstract:Embodied cognition theory denotes that knowledge is incorporated into the body’s sensorimotor system, which facilitates learning and understanding abstract concepts. In this context, several interaction modalities have been introduced to design learning experiences that promote multisensory processing. This study examined the impacts of the type of embodied interaction modality on learning gains in a real classroom context. The researchers designed learning interfaces involving different interaction modalities including tablet application, tangible user interface, motion-based technology, and multimodal interaction. Thirty-six primary school students (aged 7 to 9) were assigned to four groups to learn the basics of the human body anatomy. The study adopted an immediate and a 20-day delayed post-test to measure students’ knowledge retention. Regardless of interaction modality type, participants showed significant immediate learning gains. However, participants in the multimodal embodiment conditions performed better on the delayed post-test. The findings suggested that multimodal embodied interaction, merging between body movements and tangible user interfaces, may lead to better knowledge retention. The process of performing body movements and physical interaction offered an alternative and a complementary encoding strategy for understanding and memorizing the learning concepts.
Embodied Agentic STEM Education: Effects of 3D VR Compared to 2D PC

Abstract:Embodiment is expected to play a key role in learning in VR. This randomized control trial determined how the two factors of embodiment (low versus high) and platform (2D PC versus 3D Virtual Reality (VR)) affected STEM learning. A total of 214 undergraduate participants were randomly assigned to four conditions in a 2 x 2 design with pretests and posttests. The low embodied groups did not control the virtual net in the natural selection game, they observed a playback of butterflies being captured. All groups showed significant content knowledge gains by posttest. There was a main effect of embodiment; the active groups that controlled the virtual net learned more content. There was not a main effect of platform on learning. However, there was an intriguing interaction of embodiment by platform by test time revealing that the low embodied VR group learned the least (ES= .38), while the high embodied VR group learned the most (ES=1.07). The low embodied VR players may have expected to have more agency and control over the game mechanics, and playing in the observational mode was infelicitous for learning. Interestingly, the PC condition was not significantly affected when in the more passive/observational mode. Players in the 2D PC condition may be more accustomed to low embodied learning, e.g., watching playback videos on monitors. Several guidelines are recommended for learning design in immersive VR. Non-interactive objects and videos in VR should be used judiciously and designers are encouraged to make the 3D VR content manipulatable and interactive.
Does Embodiment in Virtual Reality Boost Learning Transfer? Testing an Immersion-Interactivity Framework

Abstract:This study investigates the role of embodiment when learning a technical procedure in immersive virtual reality (VR) by introducing a framework based on immersion and interactivity. The goal is to determine how increasing the levels of immersion and interactivity affect learning experiences and outcomes. In a 2 × 2 factorial design, 177 high school students were assigned to one of four experimental conditions, varying levels of immersion (learning in immersive virtual reality wearing a head-mounted display (VR) vs. learning via a computer screen (PC)) and interactivity (directly manipulating objects using controllers/mouse and keyboard (congruent) vs. indirectly manipulating objects with a laser pointer to select a course of action (incidental)). The main outcome measure was a transfer task in which students were required to perform the task they had learned in the virtual environment using concrete objects in real life. Results demonstrated that students in the VR conditions experienced significantly higher levels of presence, agency, location, body ownership, and embodied learning compared to participants in the PC conditions. Additionally, students' performance during the virtual lesson predicted their real-life transfer test. However, there were no significant effects of immersion or interactivity on any of the transfer measures. The results suggest that high immersion in VR can increase self-reported measures of presence, agency, location, body ownership, and embodied learning among students. However, increased embodiment—manipulated by adding immersion and congruent manipulation of objects did not improve transfer.

Ethnic variability in the allelic distribution of human aryl hydrocarbon receptor codon 554 and assessment of variant receptor function in vitro.

Abstract:The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a ligand-dependent transcriptional regulator of several genes including the cytochrome P4501 (CYP1) family as well as genes encoding factors involved in cell growth and differentiation. In mice, several polymorphic forms of the AHR are known, some of which have altered affinity for toxic and carcinogenic ligands. Remarkably little genetic variation has been detected in the human AHR gene. In studies on human AHR, Kawajiri et al. (Pharmacogenetics 1995; 5:151-158) reported a variation at codon 554 that results in an amino acid change from arginine to lysine; the frequency of the variant allele in a Japanese population (n = 277) was 0.43. We investigated the Lys554 allele in 386 individuals of various ethnic origins and found the frequency to be: 0.58 in Ivory Coast Africans (n = 58); 0.53 in a mixed African group (n = 20); 0.39 in Caribbean-Africans (n = 55); 0.32 in Canadian Chinese (n = 41); 0.14 in North American Indians (n = 47); 0.12 in French Canadian Caucasians (n = 20); 0.11 in a mixed ethnicity North American group (n = 45); 0.09 in Canadian Inuits (n = 22); and 0.07 in German Caucasians (n = 78). We expressed the human Lys554 allele in an in-vitro transcription-translation system and found that the receptor bearing the R554L substitution had an equivalent ability to that of the wild-type receptor to bind to a dioxin-responsive element following treatment with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). The Lys554 allele also was equivalent to the wild-type receptor at stimulating CYP1A1 mRNA expression when transfected into TCDD-treated receptor-deficient mouse Hepa-1 cells. It is not yet known if any of the wide variations in allele frequency at codon 554 are related to ethnic differences in susceptibility to adverse effects of environmental chemicals.
Retention of conceptual learning after an interactive introductory physics course

Abstract:The cyclic format of the undergraduate physics curriculum depends on students' ability to recall and utilize material covered in prior courses in order to reliably build on that knowledge in later courses. However, there is evidence to suggest that people often do not retain all, or even most, of what they learned previously. How much information is retained appears to be dependent both on the individuals' approach to learning as well as the style of instruction. In particular, there is evidence to suggest that active engagement techniques in the classroom can improve students' retention of the material over time. Here, we report the findings of a longitudinal investigation of students' retention of conceptual understanding as measured by the Force and Motion Conceptual Evaluation (FMCE) following a first-semester, calculus-based introductory physics course, which features significant active engagement in both lecture and recitation. By administering the FMCE at the end of a first-semester physics course and again at the beginning of the subsequent second-semester physics course, we examine students' knowledge retention over time periods ranging from 1-15 months. We find that the shift in students' FMCE scores between these two courses is positive but corresponds to a small effect size, indicating that students retained effectively all of their conceptual learning (as measured by the FMCE). This finding largely persists even as the length of the gap between the two courses increases. We also find that, when breaking out students' performance on individual questions, the majority of students maintain their score on individual questions. Averaged over all questions, roughly a fifth of the students switched their answers from right to wrong or wrong to right on any given item.
The Impact of Embodied Scaffolding Sequences on STEM Conceptual Learning

Abstract:Current literature indicates the significance of embodied scaffoldings in enhancing the effectiveness of interactive learning technologies for STEM conceptual learning and relevant cognitive skill development. However, there is limited research on pedagogical approaches for integrating mixed embodied scaffoldings in learning with interactive technologies. This study addressed this gap by exploring the impact of delivery sequence (concreteness fading or introduction) on conceptual learning with an educational game and examining how students’ prior proficiency influences the impact. We adopted a between-subject quasi-experimental design, where two classes of fourth graders (n = 123, Mage = 10.07, SDage = 0.55) were randomly assigned to receive scaffoldings either in a concreteness fading sequence (n = 63), moving from concrete to abstract, or a concreteness introduction sequence (n = 60), moving from abstract to concrete, as they learned with a math geometric game. Results revealed that the introduction sequence was more effective than the fading sequence in promoting spatial abilities (mental folding and mental rotation) and flow experience immediately after the intervention. Nevertheless, the two sequences demonstrated similar effects on students’ conceptual understanding (retention knowledge and transfer knowledge) and spatial abilities in the delayed posttest. Considering students’ prior proficiency, it was found that those with lower proficiency exhibited greater retention knowledge gain than those with higher proficiency regardless of sequence design and test time. However, students with higher proficiency showed greater mental rotation gain for the delayed posttest regardless of sequence design. The findings generated important implications for designing an effective interactive learning environment and developing appropriate integrations of embodied scaffoldings in a more targeted manner.

Abstract:The relationship among bodily movements, cognitive abilities, and academic achievement in children is receiving considerable attention in the research community. The embodied learning approach is based on the idea of an inseparable link between body and mind in learning, aiming for teaching methods that promote children’s active engagement in the classroom. This study implements embodied learning as a part of the classroom curriculum in a real classroom environment using motion-based games. A total of 52 elementary students engaged in embodied learning in-class activities for four months. The data-set included standardized pre-post testing for children’s cognitive and academic performance, general learning analytics from games’ usage, interviews, and observations from the teachers involved. Findings showed significant effects both on children’s cognitive abilities (i.e., short-memory skills) and academic performance (i.e., expressive vocabulary). This article contributes to the educational technology community by providing an example of implementing embodied learning via use of motion-based technologies in a real classroom environment.
Embodied Cognition and Virtual Reality in Learning to Visualize Anatomy

Abstract:This study examines the facilitative effects of embodiment of a complex internal anatomical structure through three-dimensional (“3-D”) interactivity in a virtual reality (“VR”) program. Since Shepard and Metzler’s influential 1971 study, it has been known that 3-D objects (e.g., multiple-armed cube or external body parts) are visually and motorically embodied in our minds. Such findings confirm the theory that our mental images, and rotations of these images, are in fact confined by the laws of physics and biomechanics, because we perceive, think and reason in an embodied fashion. With the advancement of new technologies, virtual reality programs for medical education now enable users to interact directly in a 3-D environment with internal anatomical structures. Given that such structures are not readily viewable to users and thus not previously susceptible to embodiment, coupled with the VR environment affording all possible degrees of rotation, how people learn from these programs raises new questions. If we embody external anatomical parts we can see, such as our hands and feet, can we embody internal anatomical parts we cannot see? Does manipulating the anatomical part in virtual space facilitate the user’s embodiment of that structure and therefore the ability to visualize the structure mentally?

Abstract:Recent neuroscientific research highlighted interesting interactions between superior cognitive functions and the sensorimotor system. Overcoming the traditional views of the philosophy of mind and cognitive sciences, current empirical evidence shows that bodily states are the basis of information processing and that incarnation contributes to various aspects of mental phenomena. Starting from this theoretical framework, the purpose of this contribution is to outline, through exposure to the most significant discoveries in the world of neuroscience, the importance of Embodied Cognition as an emerging vision that considers the cognitive processes deeply rooted in the interaction of the body with the world. After careful selection and analysis of studies on neuroscience applied to teaching, the study focused on those who experienced in the school context embodied-teaching approaches aiming to promote transversal learning through movement and corporeality in action and interaction. The analysis highlights the strengths and critical points of the studies implemented in recent decades that focus on the integration and transversality of the body in learning. This is to understand whether embodied learning environments involving all spheres of personality can foster perception, knowledge, and conscious action in teaching and learning processes. An important result from the overview is the potential of theory in different educational environments and disciplines. The contemporary theoretical framework highlights the great potential of corporeality and physical education as actors in learning, but at the same time place in the foreground the need to experiment and disseminate new teaching approaches and perspectives.

Abstract:With the expansion of e-learning course curricula and the affordability of haptic devices, at-home virtual laboratories are emerging as an increasingly viable option for e-learners. We outline three novel haptic simulations for the introductory physics concepts of friction, the Coriolis Effect, and Precession. These simulations provide force feedback through one or more Novint Falcon devices, allowing students to "feel" the forces at work in a controlled learning environment. This multi-modal approach to education (beyond the audiovisual) may lead to increased interest and immersion for e-learners and appeal to the kinesthetic learners who may struggle in a traditional e-learning course setting.

An embodiment effect in computer-based learning with animated pedagogical agents.

Abstract:How do social cues such as gesturing, facial expression, eye gaze, and human-like movement affect multimedia learning with onscreen agents? To help address this question, students were asked to twice view a 4-min narrated presentation on how solar cells work in which the screen showed an animated pedagogical agent standing to the left of 11 successive slides. Across three experiments, learners performed better on a transfer test when a human-voiced agent displayed human-like gestures, facial expression, eye gaze, and body movement than when the agent did not, yielding an embodiment effect. In Experiment 2 the embodiment effect was found when the agent spoke in a human voice but not in a machine voice. In Experiment 3, the embodiment effect was found both when students were told the onscreen agent was consistent with their choice of agent characteristics and when inconsistent. Students who viewed a highly embodied agent also rated the social attributes of the agent more positively than did students who viewed a nongesturing agent. The results are explained by social agency theory, in which social cues in a multimedia message prime a feeling of social partnership in the learner, which leads to deeper cognitive processing during learning, and results in a more meaningful learning outcome as reflected in transfer test performance.

A Learning Experience in Inquiry-Based Physics with Immersive Virtual Reality: Student Perceptions and an Interaction Effect Between Conceptual Gains and Attitudinal Profiles

Abstract:The integration of immersive virtual reality (VR) in authentic science classrooms can result in a totally new learning experience for the students. However, the effect of such a learning experience on students' conceptual learning gains and their perceptions of the experience, while considering students' pre-existing science- and digital technologies-related attitudinal profiles, has not been explored to date. In this study, we have enacted a 90-min technology-enhanced inquiry-based intervention with high-school students (n = 107), on the topic of the Special Theory of Relativity in a Physics course, using a learning experience design, structured around an immersive VR simulation. Firstly, we aimed at examining students' attitudinal profiles and, secondly, at exploring the potential differences of those profiles in relation to conceptual learning gains and perceptions of the learning experience. A clustering analysis has revealed two attitudinal profiles: the low-attitudes profile (n = 48) included students with low science- and digital technologies-related attitudes, and the opposite for the high-attitudes profile (n = 59). Results from a 2 × 2 RM ANOVA indicated a statistically significant interaction between conceptual learning gains and attitudinal profiles. In addition, a one-way MANOVA test showed statistically significant differences between the two profiles in relation to students' perceptions of the learning experience, with the students of the high-attitude profile outperforming their counterparts. We discuss our findings, focusing on the implications of students' individual differences in learning and attitudes linked to the integration of immersive VR in inquiry-based instruction.

Immersive Serious Games for Learning Physics Concepts: The Case of Density

Abstract:Training students in basic concepts of physics, such as the ones related to mass, volume, or density, is much more complicated than just stating the underlying definitions and laws. One of the reasons for this is that most students have deeply rooted delusions and misconceptions about the behavior of objects, sometimes close to magical thinking. Many innovative and promising technologies, in particular Virtual Reality (VR), can be used to enhance student learning. We compared the effectiveness of a serious immersive game in teaching the concept of density in various conditions: a 2D version in an embedded web browser and a 3D immersive game in VR. We also developed a specific questionnaire to assess students' knowledge improvement. Primary results have shown an increase in learning efficiency using VR. Also, most students were able to see the shortcomings of their initial theories and revise them, which means that they improved their understanding of this topic.

Abstract:Introduction: New technologies have great potential to facilitate students' understanding and appreciation of one of the most abstract and challenging school subjects – physics. This study aimed to examine the effects of a game-based virtual reality teaching method on secondary school students' self-beliefs, interest, and performance in physics through a quasi-experimental design using pre- and post-test data. The evaluation is based on the systemic actiotope model that explains a person's goal-oriented actions by an interplay of their environment, action repertoire (i.e., students' performance and interest in physics), and subjective action space (i.e., students' self-efficacy, self-concept, and implicit theories regarding physics). Method: A game-based virtual reality App to be used with Google cardboards was developed containing 10 teaching units from the secondary school physics class curriculum. Participants in the control group were taught using traditional teaching methods, while students in the experimental group went through the VR with the teacher and conducted the prepared VR experiments in addition to the traditionally presented content. Three tests measured students' physics performance during the semester. In addition, students answered questionnaires assessing their interest, self-efficacy, self-concept, and entity implicit theories regarding physics before and after the intervention, resulting in a Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. Results: There were no significant differences between the control and experimental group in test scores on the first and second tests but compared to the control group, the experimental group achieved higher scores on the third test. In addition, the results indicate differential effects of the game-based virtual reality teaching method on students' interest and self-efficacy regarding physics to the advantage of students identifying as male, but no effects on students' self-concept, and entity implicit theories regarding physics. Discussion: The results of our pilot study suggest that incorporating innovative didactic methods into secondary school physics classes could potentially contribute to higher performance in and motivation for physics during this crucial period of adolescence when students develop educational and career aspirations. However, game-based virtual reality teaching methods seem to favor students identifying as male, which should be considered in their development and presentation. Other practical implications for practitioners and researchers are discussed.

Preparation for future conceptual learning: Content-specific long-term effects of early physics instruction.

Abstract:This study used a quasirandomized within-classroom design to investigate whether prior knowledge about physics gained in elementary school prepares students for future learning in related content areas in secondary school. A total of 433 children (intervention group) received four basic curriculum units on physics from their elementary school teachers. The units dealt with floating and sinking, air and atmospheric pressure, the stability of bridges, and sound and the spreading of sound. These children entered 60 newly composed classes in early secondary school that completed an advanced curriculum unit on hydrostatic pressure and buoyancy force with their secondary school teachers. A total of 942 students (control group) in these classes had not received the four basic physics curriculum units. On a conceptual knowledge test about hydrostatic pressure and buoyancy force, the intervention group outperformed the control group in the pretest ( d = 0.28) and in the posttest ( d = 0.25). Students in the intervention group showed similar learning gains as those in the control group, but when controlling for pretest performance, they achieved higher learning outcomes. Regression analyses within the intervention group revealed that this advantage resulted from the content-specific transfer of conceptual knowledge from topically related basic curriculum units. Learning Physics with Digital Game Simulations in Middle School Science

Abstract:The purpose of this work is to share our findings in using video gaming technology to facilitate the understanding of basic electromagnetism with middle school students. To this end, we explored the impact of using a game called Supercharged! on middle school students’ understanding of electromagnetic concepts compared to students who conducted a more traditional inquiry-oriented investigation of the same concepts. This study was a part of a larger design experiment examining the pedagogical potential of Supercharged! The control group learned through a series of guided inquiry methods while the experimental group played Supercharged! during the laboratory sections of the science course. There was significant difference, F(2,91) = 3.6, p < 0.05, η2 = 0.77, between the control and experimental groups on the gains from pre- to post-assessment. Additionally, students in the experimental group were able to give more nuanced responses about the descriptions of electric fields and the influence of distance on the forces that charges experience due to their interactions with the Supercharged! game. Results of this study show that video games can lead to positive learning outcomes, as demonstrated by the increase in test scores from pre- to post-assessment and the student interviews. This study also suggests that a complementary approach, in which video games and hands-on activities are integrated, with each activity informing the other, could be a very powerful technique for supporting student scientific understanding. Further, our findings suggest that game designers should embed meta-cognitive activities such as reflective opportunities into educational video games in order to provide scaffolds for students and to reinforce that they are engaged in an educational learning experience.

Abstract:We report on a study of the effects of laboratory activities that model fictitious laws of physics in a virtual reality environment on (1) students' epistemology about the role of experimental physics in class and in the world; (2) students' self-efficacy; and (3) the quality of student engagement with the lab activities. We create opportunities for students to practice physics as a means of creating and validating new knowledge by simulating real and fictitious physics in virtual reality (VR). This approach seeks to steer students away from a confirmation mindset in labs by eliminating any form of prior or outside models to confirm. We refer to the activities using this approach as Novel Observations in Mixed Reality (NOMR) labs. We examined NOMR's effects in 100-level and 200-level undergraduate courses. Using pre-post measurements we find that after NOMR labs, students in both populations were more expertlike in their epistemology about experimental physics and held stronger self-efficacy about their abilities to do the kinds of things experimental physicists do. Through the lens of the psychological theory of flow, we found that students engage as productively with NOMR labs as with traditional hands-on labs. This engagement persisted after the novelty of VR in the classroom wore off, suggesting that these effects are due to the pedagogical design rather than the medium of the intervention. We conclude that these NOMR labs offer an approach to physics laboratory instruction that centers the development of students' understanding of and comfort with the authentic practice of science.

Effects of Different Embodied Scaffoldings on Students' Spatial Abilities in Digital Game-Based Learning

Abstract:Adding embodied scaffolding to the teaching process can be effective in improving students' spatial abilities. However, few studies have been conducted to explore the effects of different embodied scaffoldings on students' spatial abilities. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different embodied scaffoldings on students' spatial learning. Three types of embodied scaffoldings were designed: controllable animation scaffolding (CA), instructional gesture plus animation scaffolding (GA), and physical object scaffolding (PO). Based on this, we conducted a quasi-experimental study in which 197 elementary school students were randomly divided into three groups to learn geometry in a game-based learning context and measured their knowledge learning, spatial ability, and flow experience. The results showed that although there were no significant differences in spatial ability among the three groups, students in the PO group performed significantly better in knowledge transfer than the other two groups, while students in the PO group also had the lowest level of flow experience. In addition, we investigated the influence of students' prior proficiency on the effects of different embodied scaffoldings. The results showed that students in the low proficiency group performed better in the PO condition and the CA condition than those in the high proficiency group.

Abstract:The objective of this review is to investigate research in instructional methods and embodied cognition in order to suggest the idea that a professor’s movement provides information by increasing levels of exogenous embodiment. This review describes how teaching methods varying in human activity lead to different outcomes and how those outcomes may be linked to the presence of an active body providing instruction. The embodied cognition literature suggests the physical actions we perform and the actions being performed around us shape our mental experience. We argue that students mentally imitate the gestures of their professor, this activity contributes to the embodied experience one has in a classroom, and that this increased activity leads to increased recall. One possible reason for increased student learning in human-centered environments is the activation of mirror neurons. Implications for teaching topics in a psychology classroom are discussed.
