Abstract:Background: Adverse effects of traffic-related air pollution (AP) and noise on cognitive functions have been proposed, but little is known about their interactions and the combined effect of co-exposure. Methods: Cognitive assessment was completed by 4086 participants of the population-based Heinz Nixdorf Recall cohort study using five neuropsychological subtests and an additively calculated global cognitive score (GCS). We assessed long-term residential concentrations for size-fractioned particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides with land use regression. Road traffic noise (weighted 24-h (LDEN) and night-time (LNIGHT) means) was assessed according to the EU directive 2002/49/EC. Linear regression models adjusted for individual-level characteristics were calculated to estimate effect modification of associations between AP and noise with cognitive function. We used multiplicative interaction terms and categories of single or double high exposure, dichotomizing the potential effect modifier at the median (AP) or at an a priori defined threshold (road traffic noise). Results: In fully adjusted models, high noise exposure increased the association of AP with cognitive function. For example, for an interquartile range increase of PM2.5 (IQR 1.43), association s with GCS were: estimate (β)=-0.16 [95% confidence interval: -0.33; 0.01] and β=-0.48 [-0.72; -0.23] for low and high LDEN, respectively. The association of noise with GCS was restricted to highly AP-exposed participants. We observed stronger negative associations in those participants with double exposure compared to the addition of effect estimates of each single exposure. Conclusions: Our study suggests that AP and road traffic noise might act synergistically on cognitive function in adults.

Abstract:Background: Evidence about associations of pollutants with sleep is limited, and most of studies focused on individual sleep behaviors, neglecting their interrelation. We aimed to assess the relationship between ambient air pollution and road traffic noise with overall sleep health. Methods: The study included 378,223 participants from the UK Biobank. Including five sleep behaviors (chronotype, sleep duration, insomnia, snoring, and daytime sleepiness) to construct overall sleep pattern. Ambient air pollution exposure was estimated using Land Use Regression model. Road traffic noise exposure was estimated using a simplified version of the Common Noise Assessment Methods model. Using multinomial and binary logistic regression models to identify the associations between pollutants with overall and individual sleep behaviors, respectively. Results: Participants were derived in three sleep patterns: healthy (n = 140,490), intermediate (n = 220,627), and poor (n = 17,106). After adjustment for potential confounders, compared with the lowest quartile of PM2.5, the highest quartile had higher odds of intermediate and poor compared to healthy sleep pattern [OR (95% CI) for poor: 1.28 (1.21-1.36); for intermediate: 1.11 (1.09-1.14)]. We observed similar relationships for PM10, PM2.5 absorbance, PMcoarse, NOx, and NO2. In unadjusted model, compared with low exposure of Lnight, high Lnight exposure had higher odds of intermediate and poor compared to healthy sleep pattern [OR (95% CI) for poor: 1.13 (1.06-1.20); for intermediate: 1.03 (1.00-1.06)]. However, such associations disappeared after further adjustment for potential confounders. Conclusions: Long-term ambient air pollution is associated with overall sleep health. Road traffic noise itself is weakly associated with overall sleep health.

Abstract:It is well understood that Inter-industry knowledge diffusion has become very significant in knowledge society where innovation based on interdisciplinary is always encouraged. To understand how significant inter-industry knowledge diffusion is, this study classify USPTO patents granted between 1976 to 2013 into five industries, i.e. Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instruments and Other, investigate knowledge diffusion among industries through patent citation analysis. Also, knowledge diffusion is characterized by Number of Claim, Number of Patent Citation Received, Number of Patent Reference, Number of Non-Patent Reference, and Number of Foreign Reference. It is observed that Patents cited by Mechanical Industry and Mechanical patents have Less Number of Non-Patent Reference, and Number of Claim. The results obtained in this study provide a possible way for valuing knowledge diffusion.
Long-term exposure to transportation noise in relation to global cognitive decline and cognitive impairment: Results from a Swedish longitudinal cohort

Abstract:Background and aims Transportation noise is an environmental exposure with mounting evidence of adverse health effects. Besides the increased risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, recent studies suggest that long-term noise exposure might accelerate cognitive decline in older age. We examined the association between transportation noise and cognitive function in a cohort of older adults. Methods The present study is based on 2594 dementia-free participants aged 60 + years from the Swedish National study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (SNAC-K). Global cognition score and CIND (cognitive impairment, no dementia) were assessed with a comprehensive neuropsychological battery at baseline and up to 16 years. Residential transportation noise resulting from road traffic, railway, and aircraft were estimated at the most exposed façade and the time-weighted average exposure was assessed. Linear mixed-effect models were used to assess the effect of long-term traffic noise exposure on the rate of change in global cognition score. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) of CIND by transportation noise exposure were obtained with Cox proportional hazard models. Results Global cognition score decreased at an average rate of −0.041 (95 %CI −0.043, −0.039) per year. Aircraft noise was associated with a 0.007 (per 10 dB L den ; 95 %CI −0.012, −0.001) faster annual rate of decline. Global cognition score seems to be not affected by road traffic and railway noise. During the follow-up, 422 (21 %) participants developed CIND. A 10-dB L den difference in exposure to aircraft and railway noise was associated with a 16 % (HR 1.16, 95 %CI 0.91, 1.49) and 26 % (HR 1.26, 95 %CI 1.01, 1.56) increased hazard of CIND in the multi-pollutant model, respectively. No association was found for road traffic (HR 1.00, 95 %CI 0.83, 1.21). Conclusions Transportation noise was linked to cognitive impairment and faster cognitive decline among older adults. Future studies are warranted to confirm our results.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION We examined the association of long‐term exposure to air pollution and road traffic noise with dementia incidence in the Danish Nurse Cohort. METHODS Female nurses were followed for dementia incidence (hospital contact or medication prescription) from 1993/1999 to 2020. Air pollution and road traffic noise levels were estimated at nurses' residences, and their associations with dementia were examined using Cox regression models. RESULTS Of 25,233 nurses 1409 developed dementia. Particulate matter with a diameter of ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) was associated with dementia incidence, after adjusting for lifestyle, socioeconomic status, and road traffic noise (hazard ratio [95% confidence interval] 1.35 [1.15–1.59] per interquartile range of 2.6 μg/m3). There was no association of PM2.5 with dementia in physically active nurses. Association with road traffic noise diminished after adjusting for PM2.5 (1.02 [0.93–1.11] per 7.6 dB). DISCUSSION Long‐term exposure to air pollution increases risk of dementia, and physical activity may moderate this risk. Highlights Long‐term exposure to air pollution was associated with increased risk of dementia among female nurses from the Danish Nurse Cohort. Association of air pollution with dementia was independent of road traffic noise. Association of road traffic noise with dementia diminished after adjusting for air pollution. Physical activity moderated adverse effects of air pollution on dementia.

Abstract:Due to inconsistent epidemiological evidence on health effects of air pollution on progression of atherosclerosis, we investigated several air pollutants and their effects on progression of atherosclerosis, using carotid intima media thickness (cIMT), coronary calcification (CAC), and thoracic aortic calcification (TAC). We used baseline (2000-2003) and 5-y follow-up (2006-2008) data from the German Heinz Nixdorf Recall cohort study, including 4,814 middle-aged adults. Residence-based long-term air pollution exposure, including particulate matter (PM) with aerodynamic diameter (), (), and nitrogen dioxide () was assessed using chemistry transport and land use regression (LUR) models. cIMT was quantified as side-specific median IMT assessed from standardized ultrasound images. CAC and TAC were quantified by computed tomography using the Agatston score. Development (yes/no) and progression of atherosclerosis (change in cIMT and annual growth rate for CAC/TAC) were analyzed with logistic and linear regression models, adjusting for age, sex, lifestyle variables, socioeconomic status, and traffic noise. While no clear associations were observed in the full study sample (mean age 59.1 () y; 53% female), most air pollutants were marginally associated with progression of atherosclerosis in participants with no or low baseline atherosclerotic burden. Most consistently for CAC, e.g., a higher exposure to (LUR) yielded an estimated odds ratio of 1.19 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03, 1.39] for progression of CAC and an increased annual growth rate of 2% (95% CI: 1%, 4%). Our study suggests that development and progression of subclinical atherosclerosis is associated with long-term air pollution in middle-aged participants with no or minor atherosclerotic burden at baseline, while overall no consistent associations are observed. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP7077.

Abstract:Air pollution has a negative impact on one's health and on the central nervous system. We decided to assess studies that evaluated the relationship between air pollution and cognitive functions in children and adolescents by reviewing studies that had been published between January 2009 and May 2019. We searched three major databases for original works (26 studies) and for studies using brain imaging methods based on MRI (six studies). Adverse effects of air pollutants on selected cognitive or psychomotor functions were found in all of the studies. Exposure to nitrogen dioxide, for example, was linked to impaired working memory, general cognitive functions, and psychomotor functions; particulate matter 2.5 was linked to difficulties in working memory, short-term memory, attention, processing speed, and fine motor function; black carbon was linked to poor verbal intelligence, nonverbal intelligence, and working memory; airborne copper was linked to impaired attentiveness and fine motor skills; isophorone was linked to lower mathematical skills; and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in fetal life were linked to lower intelligence scores. The studies using MRI showed that high concentrations of air pollutants were linked to changes in the brain's white matter or lower functional integration and segregation in children's brain networks. In view of the global increase in air pollution, there is a need for further research to elucidate the relationship between air pollution and cognitive and motor development in children. According to some studies, neuroinflammation, the e4 allele of the apolipoprotein E gene, and gutathione-S-transferase gene polymorphism processes may play a role.

Abstract:Background Air pollution exposure during pregnancy and childhood has been linked to executive function impairment in children, however, very few studies have assessed these two exposure periods jointly to identify susceptible periods of exposure. We sought to identify potential periods of susceptibility of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) exposure from conception to childhood on attentional function and working memory in school-aged children. Methods Within the Spanish INMA Project, we estimated residential daily NO 2 exposures during pregnancy and the first 6 years of childhood using land use regression models (n = 1,703). We assessed attentional function at 4–6 years and 6–8 years, using the Conners Kiddie Continuous Performance Test and the Attention Network Test, respectively, and working memory at 6–8 years, using the N-back task. We used distributed lag non-linear models to assess the periods of susceptibility of each outcome, adjusting for potential confounders and correcting for multiple testing. We also stratified all models by sex. Results Higher exposure to NO 2 between 1.3 and 1.6 years of age was associated with higher hit reaction time standard error (HRT-SE) (0.14 (95 % CI 0.05; 0.22) per 10 μg/m 3 increase in NO 2 ) and between 1.5 and 2.2 years of age with more omission errors (1.02 (95 % CI 1.01; 1.03) of the attentional function test at 4–6 years. Higher exposure to NO 2 between 0.3 and 2.2 years was associated with higher HRT-SE (10.61 (95 % CI 3.46; 17.75) at 6–8 years only in boys. We found no associations between exposure to NO 2 and working memory at 6–8 years. Conclusion Our findings suggest that NO 2 exposure during the first two years of life is associated with poorer attentional function in children from 4 to 8 years of age, especially in boys. These findings highlight the importance of exploring long-term effects of traffic-related air pollution exposure in older age groups.

Abstract:Background: Air pollution has been associated with cognitive function in the elderly. Previous studies have not evaluated the simultaneous effect of neighborhood-level socioeconomic status (N-SES), which can be an essential source of bias. Objectives: We explored N-SES as a confounder and effect modifier in a cross-sectional study of air pollution and subjective cognitive function. Methods: We included 12,058 participants age 50+ years from the Emory Healthy Aging Study in Metro Atlanta using the Cognitive Function Instrument (CFI) score as our outcome, with higher scores representing worse subjective cognitive function. We estimated 9-year average ambient carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations at residential addresses using a fusion of dispersion and chemical transport models. We collected census-tract level N-SES indicators and created two composite measures via principal component analysis and k-means clustering. Associations between pollutants and CFI and effect modification by N-SES were estimated via linear regression models adjusted for age, education, race and N-SES. Results: N-SES confounded the association between air pollution and CFI, independent of individual characteristics. We found significant effect modifications by N-SES for the association between air pollution and CFI (p-values<0.001) suggesting that effects of air pollution differ depending on N-SES. Participants living in areas with low N-SES were most vulnerable to air pollution. In the lowest N-SES urban areas, interquartile range (IQR) increases in CO, NOx, and PM2.5 were associated with 5.4% (95%-confidence interval, -0.2,11.3), 4.9% (-0.4,10.4), and 9.8% (2.2,18.0) changes in CFI, respectively. In lowest N-SES suburban areas, IQR increases in CO, NOx, and PM2.5 were associated with higher changes in CFI, namely 13.0% (0.9,26.5), 13.0% (-0.1,27.8), and 17.3% (2.5,34.2), respectively. Discussion: N-SES is an important confounder and effect modifier in our study. This finding could have implications for studying health effects of air pollution and identifying susceptible populations.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Durable polymer coatings have been implicated in mid- and long-term adverse events after drug-eluting stent implantation. A polymer-free dual-drug sirolimus- and probucol-eluting stent and a new generation permanent polymer zotarolimus-eluting stent are recently developed technologies demonstrating encouraging results. METHODS AND RESULTS In a clinical trial with minimal exclusion criteria, we randomly assigned 3002 patients to treatment with sirolimus- and probucol-eluting stents versus zotarolimus-eluting stents. The trial was designed to demonstrate noninferiority of the sirolimus- and probucol-eluting stents. The primary end point was the combined incidence of cardiac death, target-vessel-related myocardial infarction, or target-lesion revascularization at 1-year follow-up. Follow-up angiography was scheduled at 6 to 8 months. The sirolimus- and probucol-eluting stent was noninferior to the zotarolimus-eluting stent in terms of occurrence of the primary end point (13.1% versus 13.5%, respectively, P(noninferiority)=0.006; hazard ratio=0.97, 95% confidence interval, 0.78 to 1.19; P(superiority)=0.74). The incidence of definite/probable stent thrombosis was low in both groups (1.1% versus 1.2%, respectively; hazard ratio=0.91 [95% confidence interval, 0.45 to 1.84], P=0.80). With regard to angiographic efficacy, there were no differences between the sirolimus- and probucol-eluting stent and the zotarolimus-eluting stent in terms of either in-segment binary angiographic restenosis (13.3% versus 13.4% respectively; P=0.95) or in-stent late luminal loss (0.31±0.58 mm versus 0.29±0.56 mm, respectively; P=0.46). CONCLUSION In this large-scale study powered for clinical end points, a polymer-free sirolimus- and probucol-eluting stent was noninferior to a new generation durable polymer-based zotarolimus-eluting stent out to 12 months. Ambient air pollution, covert cerebrovascular disease and cognition: results from the ISSYS study

Abstract:The association between exposure to air pollution, calculated using a land use regression model, and the presence and accumulation over time of covert cerebral vascular disease, assessed by cerebral magnetic resonance imaging, was investigated in a cohort of hypertensive, otherwise healthy, outpatient‐based individuals. Exposure to several of the main air pollutants is associated with an increased risk of cerebrovascular disease at baseline and in the follow‐up 4 years after. Background and purpose Although air pollution (AP) has been associated with stroke and dementia, data regarding its relationship with covert cerebrovascular disease (cCVD) and cognition over time are sparse. The aim of this study was to explore these relationships. Methods A prospective population‐based study of 976 stroke‐free and non‐demented individuals living in Barcelona, Spain, was conducted during 2010–2016. A land use regression model was used to estimate the exposure of each participant to AP: NOx, NO2, PM2.5, PM10, PMcoarse and PM2.5 absorbance. Cognitive function and cCVD were assessed at baseline (n = 976) and 4 years after (n = 317). Multivariate‐adjusted models were developed. Results At baseline, 99 participants (10.1%) had covert brain infarcts and 91 (9.3%) had extensive periventricular white matter hyperintensities (WMHs). Marked subcortical WMH progression was seen in 19.7%; the incidence of other covert cerebrovascular lessons ranged between 5% and 6% each. PM2.5 was related to higher odds of having a covert brain infarct (odds ratio [OR] 2.21; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.06–4.60). PM2.5 absorbance was related to higher odds of having extensive subcortical WMHs (OR 1.72; 95% CI 1.13–2.60), whereas NO2 was related to higher odds of having extensive subcortical (OR 1.66; 95% CI 1.17–2.35) or periventricular (OR 1.96; 95% CI 1.10–3.50) WMHs and to higher odds of developing marked subcortical WMH progression (OR 1.40; 95% CI 1.05–1.90). NOx was related to incident cerebral microbleeds (OR 1.36; 95% CI 1.04–1.79). There was no association between AP and cognition. Conclusions Air pollutant predicts the presence and accumulation of cCVD. Its impact on cognitive impairment remains to be determined.

Abstract:It has been shown that there is a correlation between the fusogenecity of synthetic peptides corresponding to the N-terminal segment of wild-type and mutant forms of simian immunodeficiency virus gp32 (SIV) and their mode of insertion into lipid bilayers. Fusogenic activity is only observed when the peptide inserts into the bilayer with an oblique orientation. Since bilayer destabilization is a necessary step in membrane fusion, we investigate how fusion peptides, which insert at different orientations into lipid bilayers, structurally affect model membranes. We use X-ray diffraction to investigate the structural effects of two synthetic peptides on three different lipid systems. One peptide corresponds to the wild-type sequence (SIVwt), which inserts into the membrane at an oblique angle and is fusogenic. The other peptide has a rearranged sequence (SIVmutV), inserts into the membrane along the bilayer normal, and is nonfusogenic. Our results are expressed through different structural effects, which depend on the lipid system: for example, (i) disordering of the L alpha phase as evidenced by the broadening of the diffraction peaks, (ii) morphological convertion of multilamellar vesicles into unilamellar vesicles, (iii) decrease of the hexagonal phase cell parameter when SIVwt is added, and (iv) change in the conditions for the formation of cubic phases as well as its kinetic stability over a range of temperatures. Some of these observations are explicable based on the fact that the SIVwt destabilizes bilayers by inducing a negative monolayer curvature, while the SIVmutV destabilizes bilayers by inducing a positive monolayer curvature. Finally, we present a model which describes how these findings correlate with fusogenic activity and fusion inhibitory activity, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells of an immunized patient were transformed with Epstein‐Barr virus and then fused with P3X63Ag8 mouse myeloma cells by polyethylene glycol. After the cloning, a hybridoma cell line secreting specific anti‐Jkb monoclonal antibody was isolated. The antibody was produced in supernatant form and tested for its use as a blood grouping reagent.

Abstract:Evidence regarding the cognitive effects of air pollution is inconsistent. This study aimed to quantitatively analyze the relationship between air pollutants and cognitive abilities using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). We systematically searched for studies published until July 1, 2023, and assessed heterogeneity with Cochran's Q test and I2 statistics, while publication bias was evaluated using Funnel plots and Egger's test. Out of 380 studies, 17 were included in the meta-analysis. Results demonstrated significant relationship among long-term exposure to PM 2.5 , O 3 , and cognitive decline. The pooled RR of cognitive impairment per 10μg/m 3 increase were 1.17 for PM 2.5 and 1.07 for PM 10 . Furthermore, there was a significant association between cognitive decline and long-term exposure to PM 2.5 (β = -0.30; I 2 = 95.30%) and PM 10 (β = -0.15; I 2 = 87.50%). Our research suggests that long-term exposure to air pollution, especially PM 2.5 , is a risk factor for cognitive impairment.

Abstract:Background Air pollution induces neurotoxic reactions and may exert adverse effects on cognitive health. We aimed to investigate whether air pollutants accelerate cognitive decline and affect neurobiological signatures of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methods We employed a population-based cohort from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) with 31,573 participants and a 10-year follow-up (5,878 cognitively unimpaired individuals in CLHLS followed for 5.95 ± 2.87 years), and a biomarker-based datum from the Chinese Alzheimer's Biomarker and LifestylE (CABLE) including 1131 participants who received cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) measurements of AD signatures. Cognitive impairment was determined by education-corrected performance on the China-Modified Mini-Mental State Examination. Annual exposures to fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), ground-level ozone (O 3 ), and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) were estimated at areas of residence. Exposures were aggregated as 2-year averages preceding enrollments using Cox proportional hazards or linear models. Results Long-term exposure to PM 2.5 exposure (per 20 μg/m 3 ) increased risk of cognitive impairment (hazard ratio, 1.100; 95% confidence interval, 1.026-1.180), and similar associations were observed from separate cross-sectional analyses. Exposures to O 3 and NO 2 yielded elevated risk but with non-significant estimates. Individuals exposed to high PM 2.5 manifested increased amyloid burdens as reflected by CSF AD biomarkers. Besides, PM 2.5 exposure-associated decline in global cognition was partly explained by amyloid pathology as measured by CSF Aβ42/Aβ40, P-tau/Aβ42, and Tau/Aβ42, with mediation proportions ranging from 16.95% to 21.64%. Conclusions Long-term exposure to PM 2.5 contributed to the development of cognitive decline, which may be partly explained by brain amyloid accumulation indicative of increased AD risk.

Abstract:Background Exposure to environmental noise is increasing in recent years but most of the previous literature in children has evaluated the effect of aircraft noise exposure at schools on cognition. Objective To assess whether residential exposure to road traffic noise during pregnancy and childhood is associated with cognitive and motor function in children and preadolescents. Methods The study involved 619 participants from the Spanish INMA-Sabadell cohort and 7,115 from the Dutch Generation R Study. We used noise maps to estimate the average day-evening-night road traffic noise levels at each participant's residential address during pregnancy and childhood periods. Validated tests were administered throughout childhood in both cohorts to assess non-verbal and verbal intelligence, memory, processing speed, attentional function, working memory, cognitive flexibility, risky decision-making, and fine and gross motor function. Linear models, linear mixed models, and negative binomial models were run depending on the outcome in cohort-specific analysis and combined with a random-effects meta-analysis. All models were adjusted for several socioeconomic and lifestyle variables and results corrected for multiple testing. Results Average road traffic noise exposure levels during pregnancy and childhood were 61.3 (SD 6.0) and 61.5 (SD 5.4) dB for the INMA-Sabadell cohort and 54.6 (SD 7.9) and 53.5 (SD 6.5) dB for the Generation R Study, respectively. Road traffic noise exposure during pregnancy and childhood was not related to any of the cognitive and motor function outcomes examined in this study (e.g. -0.92 (95%CI -2.08; 0.24) and 0.20 (95%CI -0.96; 1.35) in overall estimates of memory and fine motor function, respectively, when road traffic noise increases by 10 dB during childhood). Conclusions These findings suggest that child's cognitive or motor functions are not affected by residential exposure to road traffic noise. However, more studies evaluating this association at school and home settings as well as noise events are needed.
