Abstract:On September 6, 2008, the satellite HJ-1B was launched into a sun-synchronous, near-polar orbit. In order to determine temporal changes of the absolute radiometric calibration of the HJ-1B satellite in flight, a program was carried out at DunHuang calibration field, Gansu province of China, from August 19 to 30, 2009. In this work, reflectance -based calibration method was employed to simulate the absolute calibration coefficients of the HJ-1B CCD sensors. Then the cotton field, cement court, water pool and test site was selected to validate the calibration coefficient. The validation results indicated that there had a good agreement between the imaged-based reflectance and the ground measurement of the type of cement court and test site. On the other hand, there had a disagreement of the type of cotton field and water because of the effect of mixed pixel.
On-Orbit Vicarious Radiometric Calibration and Validation of ZY1-02E Thermal Infrared Sensor

Abstract:The ZY1-02E satellite carrying a thermal infrared sensor was successfully launched from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center on 26 December 2021. The quantitative characteristics of this thermal infrared camera, for use in supporting applications, were acquired as part of an absolute radiometric calibration campaign performed at the Ulansuhai Nur and Baotou calibration site (Inner Mongolia, July 2022). In this paper, we propose a novel on-orbit absolute radiometric calibration technique, based on multiple ground observations, that considers the radiometric characteristics of the ZY1-02E thermal infrared sensor. A variety of natural surface objects were selected as references, including bodies of water, bare soil, a desert in Kubuqi, and sand and vegetation at the Baotou calibration site. During satellite overpass, the 102F Fourier transform thermal infrared spectrometer and the SI-111 infrared temperature sensor were used to measure temperature and ground-leaving radiance for these surface profiles. Atmospheric water vapor, aerosol optical depth, and ozone concentration were simultaneously obtained from the CIMEL CE318 Sun photometer and the MICROTOP II ozonometer. Atmospheric profile information was acquired from radiosonde instruments carried by sounding balloons. Synchronous measurements of atmospheric parameters and ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis data were then combined and input to an atmospheric radiative transfer model (MODTRAN6.0) used to calculate apparent radiance. Calibration coefficients were determined from the measured apparent radiance and satellite-observed digital number (DN), for use in calculating the on-orbit observed radiance of typical surface objects. These values were then compared with the apparent radiance of each object, using radiative transfer calculations to evaluate the accuracy of on-orbit absolute radiometric calibration. The results show that the accuracy of this absolute radiometric calibration is better than 0.6 K. This approach allows the thermal infrared channel to be unrestricted by the limitations of spectrum matching between a satellite and field measurements, with strong applicability to various types of calibration sites.

Abstract:The Climate Absolute Radiance and Refractivity (CLARREO) Pathfinder (CPF) mission will take Système Internationale (SI)-traceable spectral reflectance measurements of Earth at an unprecedented accuracy of 0.3% ( = 1). CPF will also take measurements to support intercalibration of other satellite-based sensors. To achieve the desired intercalibration methodology uncertainty of 0.3% ( = 1), the CPF intercalibration measurements need to closely match those from target sensors in time, space, angles, and wavelength. This article introduces an innovative angular correction method to significantly reduce errors due to angular mismatches between CPF and target sensor measurements. The method leverages the spectral correlations among the reflected solar (RS) radiances from the same surface target at two adjacent angles. Our studies have shown that the spectral radiance or reflectance difference measured at angles slightly deviating from the CPF observation angles can be accurately predicted based on the hyperspectral CPF measurements. The method will serve as part of the operational algorithms to support the core mission goal of conducting intercalibration analysis with measurements from the shortwave channel of the Clouds and the Earth's Radiance Energy System (CERES) and the reflective solar bands of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS); however, it can also be extended for other reference-target intercalibration applications.

Abstract:Satellite sensors with large view angles can provide wide-swath imaging for earth observations, which pose new challenges for cross-calibration due to bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). To address these challenges, we adopted global searching (GS) algorithms to "search" calibration coefficients with BRDF considered. The GS-based methods were implemented to calibrate two Chinese large-view-angle sensors: the Gaofen-1 first wide-field-of-view (WFV1) camera and Gaofen-4 panchromatic multispectral sensor (PMS) with Landsat-8/Operational Land Imager (OLI) as references. Validations were conducted by evaluating the top of atmosphere (TOA) radiance and surface reflectance using synchronous OLI data. The mean relative biases (MRBs) of the GS-derived TOA radiance for the WFV1 were smaller than 5.5% compared with the OLI-simulated TOA radiance, while those of using official coefficients were up to 13%. The performances of the GS method and traditional method using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) BRDF products for BRDF correction are comparable. The GS-based scheme has the potential to correct BRDF during cross-calibration and thus free cross-calibration of large-view-angle sensors from BRDF models and products.

Abstract:TERRA MODIS band 31 was selected as the criterion for doing the radiometric cross-calibration of CBERS-02 IRMSS thermal band. From August to December, 2004, seven times day and night synchronous images of two sensors passing through the Lake Qinghai and Lake Taihu were selected to obtain the cross-calibration data. TERRA MODIS band 31 data were used to conduct out the pupil radiance of CBERS-02 IRMSS band 9 based on the two sensors' spectrum matching, and then the DN values were picked-up from the IRMSS data in the same area. A new model to calculate the radiometric calibration coefficients was carried out in this study. The model is multi-points linear regression method with 7 times day and night synchronous images at different dates and locations. The radiometric cross-calibration coefficients are 8.0567 (gain, unit: DN/(W/m(2)/sr(1)/mu m(1))) and 47.892 (offset, unit: DN). Accuracy estimate of calibration coefficients was carried out. The results show that the calibration coefficients obtained from the linear regression method have a similar precision as TERRA MODIS band 31 ' s. The calibration coefficients can satisfy the quantitative applications of CBERS-02 IRMSS thermal data.

Abstract:Radiometric calibration of the medium-resolution satellite data is critical for monitoring and quantifying changes in the Earth's environment and resources. Many medium-resolution satellite sensors have irregular revisits and, sometimes, have a large difference in illumination viewing geometry compared with a reference sensor, posing a great challenge for routine cross-calibration practices. To overcome these issues, this study proposed a cross-calibration method to calibrate medium-resolution multispectral data. The Chinese Gaofen-4 (GF-4) panchromatic and multispectral sensor (PMS) data with large viewing angles were used as the test data, and Landsat-8 operational land imager (OLI) data were used as the reference data. A bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) correction method was proposed to eliminate the effects of differences in illumination viewing geometry between GF-4 and Landsat-8. The validation using concurrent image shows that the mean relative error (MRE) of cross calibration is less than 6.65%. Validation using ground measurements shows that our calibration results have an improvement of around 14.8% compared with the official released calibration coefficients. The time series cross calibration reveals that, without the requirements of simultaneous nadir observations (SNOs), our calibration activities can be carried out more often in practice. Gradual and continuous radiometric sensor degradation is identified with the monthly updated calibration coefficients, demonstrating the reliability and importance of the timely cross calibration. Besides, the cross-calibration approach does not rely on any specific calibration site, and the difference in illumination viewing geometry can be well considered. Thus, it can be easily adapted and applied to other optical satellite data.

Abstract:In the process of radiometric calibration, the corrections for bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (BRDFs) and spectral band adjustment factors (SBAFs) are crucial. Time-series MODIS images are commonly used to construct BRDFs by using the Ross–Li model in current research. However, the Ross–Li BRDF model is based on the linear relationship between the kernel models and is unable to take into account the nonlinear relationship between them. Furthermore, when using SBAF to account for spectral difference, a radiative transfer model is often used, but it requires many parameters to be set, which may introduce more errors and reduce the calibration accuracy. To address these issues, the random forest algorithm and a spectral interpolation convolution method using the Sentinel-2/multispectral instrument (MSI) are proposed in this study, in which the HuanJing-2A (HJ-2A)/charge-coupled device (CCD3) sensor is taken as an example, and the Dunhuang radiometric calibration site (DRCS) is used as a radiometric delivery platform. Firstly, a BRDF model by using the random forest algorithm of the DRCS is constructed using time-series MODIS images, which corrects the viewing geometry difference. Secondly, the BRDF correction coefficients, MSI reflectance, and relative spectral responses (RSRs) of CCD3 are used to correct the spectral differences. Finally, with the validation results, the maximum relative error between the calibration results of the proposed method and the official calibration coefficients (OCCs) published by the China Centre for Resources Satellite Data and Application (CRESDA) is 3.38%. When tested using the Baotou sandy site, the proposed method is better than the OCCs of the average relative errors calculated for all the bands except for the near-infrared (NIR) band, which has a larger error. Additionally, the effects of the light-matching method and the radiative transfer method, different approaches to constructing the BRDF model, using SBAF to account for spectral differences, different BRDF sources, as well as the imprecise viewing geometrical parameters, spectral interpolation method, and geometric positioning error, on the calibration results are analyzed. Results indicate that the cross-calibration coefficients obtained using the random forest algorithm and the proposed spectral interpolation method are more applicable to the CCD3; thus, they also account for the nonlinear relationships between the kernel models and reduce the error due to the radiative transfer model. The total uncertainty of the proposed method in all bands is less than 5.16%.

Abstract:In this paper, an irradiance-based absolute radiometric calibration campaign at Baotou calibration site during June and July 2018 was described. This radiometric calibration campaign made use of six radiometric calibration tarps. The synchronous measurements of parameters such as surface reflectance, atmospheric parameters, and diffuse-to-global irradiance ratio were collected at the satellite overpass. The top-of-atmospheric radiance was predicted by radiative transfer model with these synchronous measurements. The linear relationship between DNs of satellite sensor and band-specific top-of-atmospheric spectral radiance was established, and a stable and reliable absolute calibration coefficient of ZY3-02 MUX was determined in this campaign. We compared the calibration results of the irradiance-based method with those of the reflectance-based method. The results suggested that the irradiance-based method is better than reflectance-based method.
The Operational Inflight Radiometric Uniform Calibration of a Directional Polarimetric Camera

Abstract:The directional polarimetric camera (DPC) on-board the GF-5A satellite is designed for atmospheric or water color detection, which requires high radiometric accuracy. Therefore, in-flight calibration is a prerequisite for its inversion application. For large field optical sensors, it is very challenging to ensure the consistency of radiation detection in the whole field of view in the space environment. Our work proposes a vicarious in-flight calibration method based on sea non-equipment sites (visible bands) and land non-equipment sites (all bands). Combined with environmental parameters and radiation transmission calculations, we evaluated the radiation detection accuracy of the 0° to 60° view zenith angle of the DPC in each band. Our calibration method is based on the single-day normalized radiance data measured by the DPC. Through data selection, enough calibration samples can be obtained in a single day (the number of desert samples is more than 5000, and the number of calibration samples of the ocean is more than 2.8×106). The measurements are compared with the simulation of 6SV VRT code or look-up tables. The massive amount of data averages the uncertainty of a single-point calculation. Although the uncertainty of a single sample is significant, the final fitting of the curve of the variation in the radiometric calibration coefficient with the observation angle can still keep the root mean squared error at approximately 2–3% or even lower, and for visible bands, the calibration results for both ocean sites and desert sites are in good agreement regarding the non-uniformity of the sensor.

Abstract:Following the launch of the ZY1-02E satellite, the thermal infrared sensor aboard the satellite experienced alterations in the space environment, leading to varying degrees of attenuation in some components. The laboratory calibration accuracy could not satisfy the demands of quantitative production, and a certain degree of deviation was observed in on-orbit calibration. To accurately characterize the on-orbit radiation properties of thermal infrared remote sensing payloads, an absolute radiometric calibration campaign was carried out at the Ulansuhai Nur and Baotou calibration sites in Inner Mongolia in July 2022. This paper outlines the processes of onboard calibration and vicarious calibration for the ZY1-02E satellite, comparing the outcomes of onboard calibration with those of vicarious calibration. The onboard calibration method involved internal calibration, while the vicarious calibration method utilized an on-orbit absolute radiometric calibration technique based on various natural features that were not constrained by satellite–Earth spectrum matching requirements. Calibration coefficients were acquired, and the absolute radiometric calibration results of on-orbit vicarious and onboard calibration were compared, analyzed, and verified using the radiance computed from measured data and the reference sensor data. The accuracy of on-orbit absolute vicarious calibration was determined, and the causes for the decline in the radiation calibration accuracy on the orbiting satellite were examined. The findings revealed that the vicarious calibration results exhibited a lower percentage of radiance deviation compared with the onboard calibration results, meeting the quantitative requirements of remote sensing data. These results were significantly better than those obtained from onboard blackbody calibration, offering a data foundation for devising satellite calibration plans and enhancing calibration algorithms. In the future, the developmental trend of on-orbit radiometric calibration technology will encompass high-precision and slow-attenuation onboard calibration techniques, as well as high-frequency and simplified-step vicarious calibration methods.

Abstract:This study described the on-orbit vicarious radiometric calibration of Chinese civilian high-resolution stereo mapping satellite ZY3-02 multispectral imager (MUX). The calibration was based on gray-scale permanent artificial targets, and multiple radiometric calibration tarpaulins (tarps) using a reflectance-based approach between July and September 2016 at Baotou calibration site in China was described. The calibration results reveal a good linear relationship between DN and TOA radiances of ZY3-02 MUX. The uncertainty of this radiometric calibration was 4.33%, indicating that radiometric coefficients of ZY3-02 MUX are reliable. A detailed discussion on the validation analysis of the comparison results between the different radiometric calibration coefficients is presented in this paper. To further validate the reliability of the three coefficients, the calibrated ZY3-02 MUX was compared with Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI). The results also indicate that radiometric characteristics of ZY3-02 MUX imagery are reliable and highly accurate for quantitative applications.

Abstract:Accurate on-orbit radiometric calibration is the fundamental to quantitative remote sensing. Based on the thermal infrared radiative transfer model and Double Difference (DD) method, the on-orbit radiometric calibration in the thermal infrared channels of the advanced MEdium Resolution Spectral Imager (MERSI-2) on Chinese Fengyun 3D (FY-3D) are evaluated against the channels of Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) on the Himawari 8 satellite. The results shows that the on-orbit radiometric calibration of FY-3D MERSI-2 channel 25 (12.0 µm) is quite consistent with the AHI channel 15, whereas the radiometric calibration biases (the mean of the double differences ± standard deviation) in FY-3D MERSI-2 channels 23 (8.55 µm) and 24 (10.8 µm) are −0.17±0.26 K and −0.28±0.30 K, respectively. The on-orbit radiometric calibration biases are finally corrected by linear fits on the matching observations.

Abstract:Based on the data of the scientific experiment in Urad Front Banner for UAV Remote Sensing Load Calibration Field project, with the help of 6 hyperspectral radiometric targets with good Lambertian property, the wide-view multispectral camera in UAV was calibrated adopting reflectance-based method. The result reveals that for green, red and infrared channel, whose images were successfully captured, the linear correlation coefficients between the DN and radiance are all larger than 99%. In final analysis, the comprehensive error is no more than 6%. The calibration results demonstrate that the hyperspectral targets equipped by the calibration field are well suitable for air-borne multispectral load in-flight calibration. The calibration result is reliable and could be used in the retrieval of geophysical parameters.

Abstract:To obtain more abundant target information, the panchromatic and multispectral sensor (PMS) of the GaoFen-4 (GF-4) satellite utilizes five different integration times. The optimal approach for carrying out the integrated processing of absolute radiometric calibration and radiometric difference minimization of PMS images over these five integration times remains an important issue. Therefore, taking the Dunhuang radiometric calibration site (DRCS) in China as the radiometric-transfer platform and treating the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) as the reference sensors, a new radiometric cross-calibration method of the PMS based on radiometric block adjustment (RBA) is proposed. The validation results show that the proposed method can simultaneously maintain high absolute radiometric calibration consistency with the official calibration coefficients published by the China Centre for Resources Satellite Data and Application (CRESDA) and can reduce the radiometric difference between PMS images over different integration times. In addition, the influences of the distribution of the radiometric control points (RCPs), radiometric tie points (RTPs) filter, spectral band adjustment factor (SBAF) correction, and correction of the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) on the calibration results are discussed. The total cross-calibration uncertainty is less than 5.21%.

Abstract:On-orbit absolute radiometric calibration is not only a prerequisite for the quantitative application of optical remote sensing satellite data but also a key step in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of satellite observation data. Due to the diversity of imaging conditions for optical remote sensing satellite sensors, on-orbit absolute radiometric calibration usually requires a large number of imaging tasks and manual labor to calibrate each imaging condition. This seriously limits the timeliness of on-orbit absolute radiometric calibration and is also an urgent problem to be solved in the context of the explosive growth of satellite numbers. Based on this, we propose a general on-orbit absolute radiometric calibration method compatible with multiple imaging conditions. Firstly, we use a large amount of laboratory radiometric calibration data to explore the mathematical relationship between imaging conditions (row transfer time, integration level and gain), radiance, and DN, and successfully build an imaging condition compatibility model. Secondly, we combine the imaging condition compatibility model with cross calibration to achieve a general on-orbit absolute radiometric calibration method. We use cross calibration to obtain the reference radiance and corresponding DN of the target satellites, which calculates the general coefficient by using row transfer time, integration level, and gain, and use the general coefficient to calibrate all imaging conditions. Finally, we use multiple imaging tasks of the JL1GF03D11 satellites to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experiments show that the average relative difference was reduced to 2.79% and the RMSE was reduced to 1.51, compared with the laboratory radiometric calibration method. In addition, we also verify the generality of the proposed method by using 10 satellites of the Jilin-1 GF03D series. The experiment shows that the goodness of fit of the general coefficient is all greater than 95%, and the average relative difference between the reference radiance and the calibrated radiance of the proposed method is 2.46%, with an RMSE of 1.67. To sum up, by using the proposed method, all imaging conditions of optical remote sensing satellite sensor can be calibrated in one imaging task, which greatly improves the timeliness and accuracy of on-orbit absolute radiometric calibration.

Abstract:The FY-2B is a satellite with the spin stabilized attitude, it is had to make the absolute calibration for its IR channel while the satellite is in orbit. As the satellite's pre-launch Lab. calibration had a reference on the in-orbit environment temperature changes of FY-2A, its calibration is ideal. With the correction on quantitatively relationship of the IR channel by the in-orbit electronic calibration, the obtained results are very close to the ones from the simultaneous site radiometric calibration over the Qinghai lake.

Abstract:By using the satelital information of Earth observation unloaded by a station constructed in the country and reflectances measurements of the soil, we found the total radiation attenuation of the atmosphere for a small region of the Colombian territory. It was necessary to use the Fourier's theory that describes the ideal filters of signals to find the transfer functions between the spectral response of an spectroradiometer and the satelital sensor, whose radiative sign we are going to calibrate. After that, we used the reflectance spectrum of the soil taken with our spectroradiometer, the information in digital numbers (DN) of a pixel of the satelital image of the same region at the same time, and using again the theory of ideal filters we found the transfer function between the responses of both sensors to the radiance of the soil. The relation between both signals provides us the total intensity of the radiation attenuation of the atmosphere for pixel, which is fundamental to do a radiometric calibration of the whole image. We found a factor of atmosphere attenuation of the radiation ({\lambda} between 430nm to 830nm) from the soil(of the pixel surface) of H_{Total({\lambda})Atmosphere} = 1,435x 10^{-3}.
A General Relative Radiometric Correction Method for Vignetting and Chromatic Aberration of Multiple CCDs: Take the Chinese Series of Gaofen Satellite Level-0 Images for Example

Abstract:The relative radiometric correction for Level-0 images captured by spaceborne push-broom imaging system faces the problems of vignetting, chromatic aberration, brightness saturation difference, misalignment, and so on. This article proposed a general relative radiometric correction method, which was applied to Gaofen series satellite Level-0 images. In the course of vignetting calibration, the proposed method based on the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) did not use side-slither data and the DNMAX truncation method can solve brightness saturation difference. During chromatic aberration calibration, the subpixel-based phase correlation algorithm was first used to register adjacent CCDs, and then, the proposed global optimization method was adapted to calibrate multiple CCDs. The fixed calibration parameters for vignetting and chromatic aberration calculated by ridge regression and Newton’s method can be directly applied to correct other orbital Level-0 images. To verify the robustness and universality, Level-0 images of GF-1B, GF-1C, GF-1D, and GF-2 satellites were chosen for experiments, and the results were better than the existing methods. In addition, some official Level-1 products of GF-1B and GF-1C, covering particularly dark or bright surfaces (e.g., snow, sea, and cloud), were used to compare with the calibrated images of the proposed method. Results showed that relative radiometric correction by applying the independently estimated calibration parameters in this work achieved satisfactory results without the defects existing in official Level-1 products. Finally, results of relative radiometric correction of 30 orbital Level-0 images around the world further strengthened the conclusion that the estimated calibration parameters can be reused in other regions or seasons.
