Abstract:Respiratory gas analysis as an indicator for metabolic strain during exercise has a long history. First introduced in the 18th century, huge gas collectors served for the determination of oxidative energy delivery. While still being accepted as accurate, this particular method delivers data of low temporal resolution only. Further developments of gas analysis techniques therefore focused on a higher density of data. When algorithms became available for indispensable calculations, the so-called "breath-by-breath" (BBB) method was established some decades ago. Thereby, the term BBB in the narrower sense means that a particular physiologic value is determined for each of a subject's single respiratory cycles. Reliable application of this approach depends on the performance of available computer systems, the quality of the analyzing software routines, and the responsiveness of the gas analyzers. Thus, it appears that even nowadays technical progress is continuing in this area. This review describes technical aspects and prerequisites of the BBB approach and its specific areas of application.
Deposition and Release of Carboxylated Graphene in Saturated Porous Media: Effect of Transient Solution Chemistry.

Abstract:Chemical perturbation of pore-water in porous media may remobilize and release deposited colloids/nanomaterials into bulk flow. This re-entrainment process is important to accurately assessing the fate and transport of colloids/nanomaterials in the subsurface. This study investigated deposition and subsequent release of carboxylated graphene nanomaterials (CG) in water-saturated sand columns by first depositing CG at 100 mM NaCl or 2 mM CaCl2 (Phase 1), followed by Phase 2 (elution with sequences of 50, 10, and 1 mM NaCl, or sequences of 0.5 and 0.1 mM CaCl2), and then Phase 3 elution using deionized water. Approximate 89.2%-98.7% of injected CG was retained in sand through Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) interactions, Ca2+ bridging, and straining in Phase 1. Sequential reduction of ionic strength in Phases 2 and 3 resulted in increased release of deposited CG mainly due to the expansion of the electrical double layer thickness and thus decreased depth of the attractive secondary minimum. With increasing pulses of flushing solution, unrecoverable CG increased because weakly associated CG via the secondary minimum was likely translated to immobile regions. Significant tailing of CG released in Phase 3 suggests that CG retained in CaCl2 was more resistant upon detachment than in NaCl. In cation exchange experiment, only 0.7% of applied CG was released, possibly ascribed to the CG remobilized by cation exchange was immediately re-entrained by the secondary minimum in 50 mM NaCl. Our findings indicate that retained nanomaterials (e.g., CG) can be remobilized and transported downward in transient solution chemistries, raising concerns about their potential migration risk to groundwater. Abstract:The environmental implications of graphene oxide (GO) have received much attention. Transport of GO in subsurface environment is a critical process affecting the migration and potential risks of this important class of carbonaceous nanomaterials. To date, the effects of heterogeneity in porous media, in particular, iron oxides, on GO transport are not well studied. In this study, we investigated the transport properties of GO in saturate quartz sand as affected by the presence of iron oxides, using goethite, hematite and ferrihydrite as the model iron oxide species, and applied a two-site transport model (which accounts for both attachment and straining) to fit the transport data. We found that iron oxide coating on sand surfaces markedly inhibited GO transport, mainly due to increased electrostatic attraction between particles and collectors, as the positively charged iron oxides provided favorable deposition sites for the negatively charged GO nanosheets. Additionally, increased surface roughness was likely an additional mechanism leading to the enhanced GO deposition. The extent of transport inhibition by iron oxides also depended on the morphology iron oxides, in that at the same Fe loading a larger effect was observed when iron oxides existed as the coating on sand surface than as discreet particles. The presence of iron oxide coatings (tested using goethite) could magnify the effects of cations on GO transport. Specifically, the presence of goethite facilitated the accumulation of cations on the surface of sand, and in the case of Ca2+, the binding of GO via the cation-bridging mechanism was enhanced, as goethite contained abundant surface hydroxyl groups that are strong metal-complexing moieties.
Transport and retention of functionalized graphene oxide nanoparticles in saturated/unsaturated porous media: Effects of flow velocity, ionic strength and initial particle concentration

Abstract:The widespread use of nanomaterials has raised the threat of nanoparticles (NPs) infection of soils and groundwater resources. This research aims to investigate three parameters including flow velocity, ionic strength (IS), and initial particle concentration effects on transport behavior and retention mechanism of functionalization form of graphene oxide with polyvinylpyrrolidone (GO-PVP). The transport of GO-PVP was investigated in a laboratory-scale study through saturated/unsaturated (Saturation Degree = 0.91) sand columns. Experiments were conducted on flow velocity from 1.20 to 2.04 cm min −1 , initial particle concentration from 10 to 50 mg L −1 , and IS of 5–20 mM. The retention of GO-PVP was best described using the one-site kinetic attachment model in HYDRUS-1D, which accounted for the time and depth-dependent retention. According to breakthrough curves (BTCs), the lower transport related to the rate of mass recovery of GO-PVP was obtained by decreasing flow velocity and initial particle concentration and increasing IS through the sand columns. Increasing IS could improve the GO-PVP retention (based on k att and S max ) in saturated/unsaturated media; k att increases from 2.81 × 10 −3 to 3.54 × 10 −3 s −1 and S max increases from 0.37 to 0.42 mg g −1 in saturated/unsaturated conditions, respectively. Our findings showed that the increasing retention of GO-PVP through the sand column under unsaturated condition could be recommended for the reduction of nanoparticles danger of ecosystem exposure.

Abstract:Graphene-family nanomaterials (GFNs) exhibit universal applications and consequently will inevitably enter aquatic systems. However, both the fate and behavior of GFNs in aquatic environments have not been completely explored at field relevant conditions. Herein, we have systematically investigated the aqueous aggregation and stability of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), graphene oxide (GO), and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) under varied solution chemistry parameters (pH, divalent cations, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC)) during 21 days of incubation in simulated natural environmental conditions. Results indicate that pH values from 6 to 9 had a notable impact on the aqueous behaviors of the three GFNs. Divalent cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+) at the concentrations of 2.5 and 10 mM remarkably increased the extent of aggregation of the three GFNs and resulted in severe sedimentation, independently of surface chemical functionalization. The presence of only DOC ranging from 0.5 to 2 mg C/L significantly elevated the dispersion stability of GNPs and RGO in a dose-dependent manner, whereas no effects were observed on GO. Furthermore, DOC at the studied concentrations and surface functionality were insufficient to counterbalance the impact of the divalent cations. Direct visual and in situ observations further supported the conclusions on the effects of divalent cations or/and DOC. These findings further underline that the environmental behaviors of GFNs are controlled by the complex interplay between water chemistry parameters and GFN surface properties.
Ionic specificity mediates the transport and retention of graphene-based nanomaterials in saturated porous media

Abstract:Transport of graphene-based nanomaterials in porous media is closely related to background cations. This study examines the impacts of ionic specificity on the mobility of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced GO (RGOs) in saturated quartz sand. The transport of GO/RGOs as affected by monovalent cation Na+ followed extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory, whereas in solutions containing multivalent cations Zn2+ and Al3+, cation bridging effect played a dominant role in the transport inhibition. Moreover, the adverse effects of the divalent cations on GO/RGOs migration obeyed the Hofmeister series, i.e. following the order of Pb2+ > Cd2+ > Zn2+. Batch adsorption experiments and DFT calculations further confirmed that cations of higher valences, and of the same valence but with larger ionic radii (smaller hydrated radii) interacted more strongly with GO/RGOs and sand grains via forming inner-sphere complexes. Thus, more favorable retention was observed through cation bridging between particles and collectors, and also via enhanced straining caused by particles aggregation. Furthermore, the sulfide-reduced GO (SR-GO) that contained more surface O-functional groups was impacted more remarkably by strong complexing cations than the pristine GO (P-GO), while the mobility of poorly functionalized irradiation-reduced GO (IR-GO) was less affected by cation bridging effect.

Abstract:Currently, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) have been widely used in industry, manufacturing and agriculture. The transport and retention of CuO NPs are vital to understanding the fate as well as the life cycle of CuO NPs in the environment. This study systematically investigates the transport and retention of CuO NPs in saturated porous media, and the experimental results were explained by the CFT and DLVO theory. The van der Waals force between CuO NPs and collector was repulsive, resulting in the unfavorable deposition condition. Column experiments were conducted with saturated quartz sand under environmentally relevant pH (6, 8, 9), ionic strength (IS, 1, 10, 50 mM), and humic acid (HA, 0.1-10 mg-C/mL). Experimental results show that the breakthrough curves (BCTs) were affected by different pH and IS. Under pH 6 and 9, the mobility of CuO NPs was enhanced by high IS while the mobility was inhibited by high IS under pH 8. The mobility of CuO NPs was enhanced by humic acid and the effect was best at 0.5 mg-C/mL HA. The experimental results were successfully explained by CFT and DLVO theory, the main mechanisms were aggregation of CuO NPs, interaction energy and collision between CuO NPs and collector. In general, these findings can improve our understanding of the transport and retention of CuO NPs in subsurface environments, and suggest pH, IS, HA may be key factors governing mobility and stability of CuO NPs in natural environment. Abstract:Understanding the fate and transport of graphene oxide nanoparticles (GONPs) in the subsurface environments is of crucial importance since they may pose potential risks to the environment and human health. However, little is known about the significance of biofilm on mobility of GONPs in the subsurface. Here we investigated the transport of GONPs in saturated sand coated with Bacillus subtilis (Gram-positive) and Pseudomonas putida (Gram-negative) biofilms, and their secreted extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) under environmentally relevant ionic strengths (1-50 mM NaCl) at pH 7.2. Our results showed that irrespective of bacteria type, greater retention of GONPs occurred in biofilm-coated sand compared to clean sand, likely attributed to the increased surface roughness and physical straining. However, EPS showed negligible influence on GONPs transport, which was inconsistent with the findings in the presence of biofilms, while they exhibited comparable zeta-potentials. The different retention phenotype of GONPs in the presence of EPS was induced by hydration effect and steric repulsion. A two-site kinetic retention model well-described the transport of GONPs in porous media covered with different surface coatings, which proves the applicability of mathematical model in predicting nanoparticles' mobility in the subsurface environments, when considering the potential effects of biofilm and EPS. Cotransport Of Cu With Graphene Oxide In Saturated Porous Media With Varying Degrees Of Geochemical Heterogeneity

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) is likely to encounter heavy metals due to its widespread use and inevitable release into the subsurface environment, where the ubiquitous presence of iron oxides (e.g., hematite) would affect their interaction and transport. The present study aimed to investigate the cotransport of GO (20 mg L-1) and copper (0.05 mM CuCl2) in the presence of varying degrees of geochemical heterogeneity represented by iron oxide-coated sand fractions (omega = 0-0.45) in water-saturated columns under environmentally relevant physicochemical conditions (1 mM KCl at pH 5.0-9.0). The Langmuir-fitted maximum adsorption capacity of Cu2+ by GO reached 137.6 mg g(-1), and the presence of 0.05 mM Cu2+ decreased the colloidal stability and subsequent transport of GO in porous media. The iron oxide coating was found to significantly inhibit the transport of GO and Cu-loaded GO in sand-packed columns, which can be explained by the favorable deposition of the negatively charged GO onto patches of the positively charged iron oxide coatings at pH 5.0. Increasing the solution pH from 5.0 to 9.0 promoted the mobility of GO, with the exception of pH 7.5, in which the lowest breakthrough of GO was observed. This is possibly due to the fact that the surface charge of iron oxide approaches zero at pH 7.5, suggesting that new "favorable" sites are available for GO retention. This study deciphered the complicated interactions among engineered nanomaterials, heavy metals, and geochemical heterogeneity under environmentally relevant physicochemical conditions. Our results highlight the significant role of geochemical heterogeneity, such as iron oxide patches, in determining the fate and transport of GO and GO-heavy metal association in the subsurface environment.

Abstract:In this work, sand and bubble column experiments were conducted to explore the deposition mechanisms of graphene oxide (GO) particles in porous media with various combinations of moisture content and ionic strength. Sand column experimental results indicated that retention and transport of GO in porous media were strongly dependent on solution ionic strength. Particularly, GO showed high mobility under low ionic strength conditions in both saturated and unsaturated porous media. Increasing ionic strength dramatically increased the retention of GO particles in porous media, mainly through secondary-minimum deposition as indicated in the XDLVO interaction energy profiles. Recovery rates of GO in unsaturated sand columns were lower than that in saturated columns under the same ionic strength conditions, suggesting moisture content also played an important role in the retention of GO in porous media. Findings from the bubble column experiments showed that the GO did not attach to the air–water interface, which is consistent with the XDLVO predictions. Additional retention mechanisms, such as film straining, thus could be responsible to the reduced mobility of GO in unsaturated porous media. The experimental data of GO transport through saturated and unsaturated porous media could be accurately simulated by an advection–dispersion-reaction model.
Transport of Sulfide-Reduced Graphene Oxide in Saturated Quartz Sand: Cation-Dependent Retention Mechanisms

Abstract:We describe how the reduction of graphene oxide (GO) via environmentally relevant pathways affects its transport behavior in porous media. A pair of sulfide-reduced GOs (RGOs), prepared by reducing 10 mg/L GO with 0.1 mM Na2S for 3 and 5 days, respectively, exhibited lower mobility than did parent GO in saturated quartz sand. Interestingly, decreased mobility cannot simply be attributed to the increased hydrophobicity and aggregation upon GO reduction because the retention mechanisms of RGOs were highly cation-dependent. In the presence of Na(+) (a representative monovalent cation), the main retention mechanism was deposition in the secondary energy minimum. However, in the presence of Ca(2+) (a model divalent cation), cation bridging between RGO and sand grains became the most predominant retention mechanism; this was because sulfide reduction markedly increased the amount of hydroxyl groups (a strong metal-complexing moiety) on GO. When Na(+) was the background cation, increasing pH (which increased the accumulation of large hydrated Na(+) ions on grain surface) and the presence of Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA) significantly enhanced the transport of RGO, mainly due to steric hindrance. However, pH and SRHA had little effect when Ca(2+) was the background cation because neither affected the extent of cation bridging that controlled particle retention. These findings highlight the significance of abiotic transformations on the fate and transport of GO in aqueous systems.
Concurrent agglomeration and straining govern the transport of 14C-labeled few-layer graphene in saturated porous media

Abstract:Deposition of graphene on environmental surfaces will dictate its transport and risks. In this work, the deposition, mobilization, and transport of 14C-labeled few-layer graphene (FLG) in saturated quartz sand were systematically examined. Increasing solution ionic strength (IS) (1–100 mmol/L NaCl) resulted in greater retention of FLG (33–89%) in the sand and more hyper-exponential distribution of FLG along the sand column. Only a small fraction (≤7.4%) of the retained FLG was remobilized due to perturbation of IS by deionized water. These results indicate that trapping in pore spaces (i.e., physical straining) plays a dominant role in FLG deposition rather than attachment onto the surfaces of the sand. When IS, FLG input concentration, and flow velocity favor particle-particle interaction over particle-collector interaction, concurrent agglomeration within the pores promotes straining. In addition, electrostatic and steric repulsion that derived from the adsorbed organic macromolecules on FLG effectively reduced agglomeration and thereby enhanced transport and release of FLG. Moreover, the recovery of FLG (that deposited at 100 mmol/L NaCl) in the effluent reached 33% after speeding up the deionized water flushing rate. These findings highlight the need for FLG management in view of variations in transport behavior when assessing water quality and associated risks.
Influence of graphene oxide on the transport and deposition behaviors of colloids in saturated porous media

Abstract:The effects of graphene oxide (GO) on the transport and deposition behaviors of colloids with different sizes in packed quartz sand were investigated in both NaCl (10 and 50 mM) and CaCl2 solutions (1 and 5 mM) at pH 6. Fluorescent carboxylate-modified polystyrene latex microspheres (CMLs) with size ranging from 0.2 to 2 μm were utilized as model colloids. Both breakthrough curves and retained profiles of colloids in the presence and absence of GO in suspensions under all examined solution conditions were analyzed. The breakthrough curves of all three different-sized CMLs with GO were higher yet the retained profiles were lower than those without GO at both examined ionic strengths in NaCl solutions. The observation showed that GO increased the transport and decreased the deposition of all three different-sized CMLs in NaCl solutions. However, in CaCl2 solutions, opposite observation was achieved at two different ionic strength conditions. Specifically, the presence of GO increased the transport and decreased the deposition of all three different-sized CMLs in 1 mM CaCl2 solutions, whereas, it decreased the transport and increased the deposition of all three different-sized CMLs in 5 mM CaCl2 solutions. Comparison the breakthrough curves and retained profiles of CMLs versus those of GO yielded that the overall transport and deposition behaviors of all three different-sized CMLs with GO copresent in suspensions agreed well with the transport and deposition behaviors of GO under all examined conditions. The transport and deposition behaviors of CMLs in packed porous media clearly were controlled by those of GO under the conditions investigated in present study due to the adsorption of CMLs onto GO surfaces. Our study showed that once released into natural environment, GO would adsorb (interact with) different types of colloids and thus have significant influence on the fate and transport of colloids in porous media.

Abstract:Graphene oxide nanoparticles (GONS) has being widely used owing to its excellent physicochemical properties and unique structure, and it has strong migration in water environment, but it has biological toxicity or environmental hazards, so the study of its migration is a hot spot. In this paper, the model and experimental studies were summarized. In model studies, the CFT model, the two-site kinetic attachment model and particle tracking model have been proposed. In experiment, migration factors such as the ionic strength, p H value, temperature, organic in suspension were considered. Finally, based on study results some corresponding research prospects were proposed.
Retention and Transport of Graphene Oxide in Water-Saturated Limestone Media.

Abstract:In this work, column experiments were conducted to investigate the transport characteristics of graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles in limestone media under various electrolytes, solution pH, and humic acid (HA) concentration conditions. In the limestone media, GO exhibited relatively low mobility with the mass recovery rate lower than 65.2%, even when solution ionic strength was low. The presence of HA enhanced its mobility. In addition, the presence of S2-, a divalent anion, also promoted GO transport in limestone media compared to Cl− under similar ionic strength conditions through neutralizing more positive charge and thus diminishing the cation bridging. Solution pH showed slight effect on the transport of GO in limestone with the mass recovery range from 40.3% to 51.7%. Over all, decreases in solution pH, HA concentration and increases in solution ionic strength reduced the mobility of GO in the limestone media under the tested conditions. These results indicated both environmental conditions and media characteristics played important roles in controlling GO fate and transport in porous media. The one-site kinetic deposition model was applied to describe the interactions between the GO and limestone media and model simulations fitted the observed experimental data very well. As limestone is an important component of aquiferous media in subsurface, findings from this study elucidated the key factors and processes controlling the fate of GO particles in limestone media, which can inform the prediction and assessment of the risks of GO in groundwater environment.
Inhibited Transport of Graphene Oxide Nanoparticles in Granular Quartz Sand Coated with Bacillus Subtilis and Pseudomonas Putida Biofilms.

Abstract:Increasing production and use of graphene oxide nanoparticles (GONPs) boost their wide dissemination in the subsurface environments where biofilms occur ubiquitously, representative of the physical and chemical heterogeneities. This study aimed at investigating the influence of Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis (BS) and Gram-negative Pseudomonas putida (PP) biofilms on the transport of GONPs under different ionic strengths (0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 mM CaCl2) at neutral pH 7.2 in water-saturated porous media. Particularly, the X-ray micro-computed tomography was used to quantitatively characterize the pore structures of sand columns in the presence and absence of biofilms. Our results indicated that the presence of biofilms reduced the porosity and narrowed down the pore sizes of packed columns. Transport experiments in biofilm-coated sand showed that biofilms, irrespective of bacterial species, significantly inhibited the mobility of GONPs compared to that in cleaned sand. This could be due to the Ca2+ complexation, increased surface roughness and charge heterogeneities of collectors, and particularly enhanced physical straining caused by biofilms. The two-site kinetic retention model-fitted value of maximum solid-phase concentration (Smax2) for GONPs was higher for biofilm-coated sand than for cleaned sand, demonstrating that biofilms act as favorable sites for GONPs retention. Our findings presented herein are important to deepen our current understanding on the nature of particle-collector interactions.
Evaluation of graphene oxide-coated sand adsorption on ammonium, lead and FA with molecular dynamic simulation and spectral induced polarization

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) exhibited notable efficacy in adsorbing diverse contaminants. However, considering the economic constraints and the challenges in applying GO in natural environments, the prospect of coating it onto a three-dimensional framework presents a promising avenue for expanding its applications. In this study, abundant silica sands, which possess minimal adsorption capabilities, were employed as the framework for surface coating with GO. Batch and column tests, along with spectral induced polarization (SIP) monitoring, were conducted to investigate the adsorption process and the interaction mechanisms of GO–sand composite (GOS) with typical contaminants found in landfill-contaminated groundwater, i.e., Pb 2+ , fulvic acid (FA), and NH 4 + . The geochemical findings indicated that GOS exhibited the highest effectiveness in adsorbing and retarding Pb 2+ (7.49 mg/g; Rd = 2.2), and the least effectiveness on NH 4 + (0.37 mg/g; Rd = 1.4) under flow-through conditions. The SIP signals successfully revealed variations in the adsorption mechanisms among Pb 2+ , FA, and NH 4 + . Specifically, the imaginary conductivity responses indicated that the interaction between NH 4 + and GO was weaker compared to Pb 2+ , possibly because water films could attract NH 4 + close to the media surface through a less tightly bound adsorption mechanism. Molecular dynamic simulations demonstrated that Pb 2+ had a propensity to be adsorbed near oxygen atoms, with a priority order of carboxyl ≈ epoxy > hydroxyl > carbonyl. This adsorption process occurred rapidly and extensively due to the formation of Pb–O bonds. FA exhibited a tendency to maintain a parallel structure with the GO sheet due to π–π interactions and polar interactions, while the functional groups present in both GO and FA contributed to their mutual attraction, as evidenced by the discovery of coordination C–O bonds.

Abstract:Transport behaviors of nanoparticles (<100 nm) and clay fractions (clay particles, <2 mu m; coarse clay particles, 1-2 mu m and fine clay particles, 0.1-1 mu m) extracted from two natural soils (Inceptisol from Jilin and Oxisol from Hainan, China) were investigated in saturated sand columns at 1-30 mM NaCl and pH 5-9. Increasing NaCl concentrations decreased the mobility, while increasing pH increased the mobility of soil particles of various sizes. At pH 5 and 30 mM NaCl, nanoparticles and clay fractions exhibited the different transport behaviors, and ripening was observed for Inceptisol nanoparticles while blocking for Oxisol nanoparticles in breakthrough curves (BTCs). The effluent mass recoveries (MRs) of nanoparticles were much more than that of clay particles for both two soils (>1.9-fold) at all tested conditions, except for Inceptisol at pH 5 and 30 mM NaCl (with comparable MR). According to Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) calculations and particle-collector size ratios, both secondary energy minimum and physical straining led to the retention of clay fractions at pH 5 and 30mM NaCl, whereas primary energy minimum and straining induced by simultaneous aggregation caused the retention of nanoparticles. The experimental attachment efficiency between soil particles of various sizes and sand collector for both two soils was in the order nanoparticles < fine clay particles < clay particles < coarse clay particles, indicating that soil nanoparticles had greater mobility than clay fractions. Consequently, nanoparticles are suggested to have greater risks to transport contaminants to surface and groundwater, once they are released from soils. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The effects of metal oxides and clays on the transport of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) in saturated porous media were investigated under different ionic strength (IS) conditions. We studied the transport and retention behavior of ZnO-NPs for different types of porous media (untreated, acid treated, and acid–salt treated sand). The selected untreated sand was used as a representative sand, coated with both metal oxide and clay. The acid treated and acid–salt-treated sands were used and compared to investigate the effects of clays on the surface of the sand. In addition, the effects of clay particles in bulk solutions on the mobility and retention of ZnO-NPs were observed using bentonite as a representative clay particle. We found that the increased mobility of positively charged ZnO-NPs can be attributed to increasing charge heterogeneity of silica sand with metal oxides (mainly, iron oxide) and clays in untreated sand. No breakthrough of ZnO-NP was observed for acid-treated (presence of clays and absence of metal oxides) and acid–salt-treated sand (absence of both metal oxide and clays). Most of the injected ZnO-NPs were deposited on the surface of the sand near the column inlet. The transport of bentonite-facilitated ZnO-NPs was improved at the lowest IS (0.1 mM) (∼20%), whereas there was no difference in the mobility of ZnO-NPs at high IS solutions (1 mM and 10 mM). In particular, the breakthrough amount improved with increasing bentonite concentration. Classical Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek interactions help explain observed interactions between ZnO-NPs and sand as well as bentonite and sand.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment effluents and sludge can be an important source for engineered nanomaterials entering aquatic systems. However, nanomaterials in the discharge may have markedly different properties compared with the pristine materials, as affected by the treatment processes. Herein, we show that graphene oxide (GO) can undergo further oxidation from chloramination, a commonly adopted disinfection process in wastewater treatment, resulting in substantial changes in the concentration and distribution of GO surface O-functional groups. The chloraminated GO and the untreated GO exhibited comparable transport properties in saturated quartz sand when the background cation was Na+. However, the treated GO had significantly lower mobility than GO when the background cation was Ca2+. The lower mobility was against the common paradigm that more oxidized carbon nanomaterials should be more mobile. We attribute the surprisingly lower mobility of chloraminated GO to the increase of surface carboxyl groups from chloramination, which induced more significant deposition of GO nanosheets in the presence of Ca2+, through cation-bridging between GO and surface hydroxyl groups of quartz sand. An important implication is that mobility of GO-based materials is controlled primarily by the type and concentration of their surface functional groups, and less so by their degree of oxidation.
