Abstract:The acute toxicity of glutaraldehyde, dibromohydantoin, methionine iodine and bleaching powder to juvenile Pinctada maxima was studied. The results showed that the order of toxicity was bleaching powder>dibromohydantoin>m ethionine iodine>glutaraldehyde and the median lethal concentrations (LC50) of above disinfectants were 13.05 mg/L, 27.49 mg/L, 53.20 mg/L and 67.36 mg/L, respectively in 24 h and the LC50 were 10.15 mg/L, 9.35 mg/L, 29.27 mg/L and 35.58 mg/L respectively in 48 h; and their SC (safe concentration) were 1.86 mg/L, 0.32 mg/L, 2.66 mg/L and 7.52 mg/L respectively. The research indicated that we can use glutaraldehyde to disinfect P. maxima under safe concentration, but should not use bleahing powder, and can use dibromohydantoin and methionine iodine carefully.

Abstract:We reported here the molecular analysis of mitochondrial genomes in sweetfish (Plecoglossus altivelis). Thirty-one specimens were recruited from Ruian, Zhejiang Province, Ningde, Fujian Province, and Dongzhang reservoir, Fujian Province. DNA segments spanning cytochrome b gene and D-loop region derived from these specimens were PCR-amplified and subsequently characterized by direct DNA sequence analysis. The resultant sequence data were compared with the consensus sequence and further analyzed for proportion of each nucleotide. The average A, T, C, and G con-tents in Cyt b gene were 19.72%, 29.71%, 32.25%, and 18.32%, respectively, while the contents of A+T and G+C were 49.43% and 50.57%. In the D-loop region, the average A, T, C and G contents were 29.99%, 29.29%, 23.80%, and 16.92% and the contents of A+T and G+C were 59.28% and 40.72%, respectively. There was only one variant in the Cyt b gene belong to two haplotypes and the nucleotide diversity (pi) was merely 0.00028. In the D-loop region, there were only 5 polymorphic sites belonging to 5 haplotypes and its nucleotide diversity (pi) was only 0.00199. These results showed that the genetic diversity of P. altivelis from these regions was very low.

Abstract:The karyotypes of Agrammus agrammus (♂) and Sebastes hubbsi (♀) were studied from the renal tissue by the PHA-injection-air drying method. The diploid chromosome number of the two species were found all to be 48 and their karyotype fromulae are 7m+33sm+8st, NF=88 and 3m+2st+44t, NF=51, respectively. In addition, it is found that both karyotypes of the two species have a chromosome with secondary constriction. Therefor, there is a heteromophic chromosome pair in their karyotype. This is first discovered in chromosomal study of fish of the Huanghai and Bohai Seas.

Abstract:The present study aimed to investigate the macroscopic and histological structure of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of Larimichthyscrocea (Richardson, 1846). It consists of esophagus, stomach regions, pyloric caeca, intestinal regions, and rectum. Sixteen tubular light yellowish pyloric caeca of similar sizes were observed in all individuals. The digestive wall consists of mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, and adventitia. No major differences appeared in the structure of the tunica, epithelial cell types, connective tissues and musculature glands of L.crocea GIT. The mucosal epithelia in the oesophagus has longitudinal branched folds with frontward and hindmost zones. The gastric tunica mucosa has a characteristic folded structure and can be divided into three regions. The intestinal tunica mucosa is characterized by villi structures and numerous mucus-secreting cells. Mucus-secreting goblet cells were strongly positive to AB at pH 2.5 in the oesophagus (excluding gastro-oesophageal junction) and intestine mucosal regions, which indicates an abundance of carboxylate mucins. The surface epithelia of the gastric mucosa is PAS-positive and AB-negative. SEM examination revealed that cells in the epithelium of the esophagus have an unbroken apical layer and goblet cells. The intestinal coefficient (IC) of L.crocea was 0.80 ± 0.21, consistent with a carnivorous or omnivorous habit. Our study adds the knowledge of the digestive system of L.crocea and might be useful in the management of L.crocea stocks.
Congenital epulis of the newborn: a case report.

Abstract:Congenital epulis of the newborn is a rare soft tissue manifestation that affects infants, involving predominantly the maxillary ridge. When identified, generally at birth, excisional biopsy is recommended to avoid feeding and respiratory disturbances. This article presents a case report of a female infant who was referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgery facility for removal of a fibrotic mass present on the mandibular alveolar ridge. Diagnosis and prompt intervention can prevent expected complications such as failure to thrive or respiratory difficulty. Pediatric and general dentists should be familiar with oral pathologies that may affect the newborn or infants so that early diagnosis and treatment can be accomplished.

Abstract:The Japanese sea catfish, Plotosus japonicus, possesses taste and solitary chemoreceptor cells (SCCs) located on the external body surface that detect specific water-soluble substances. Here, we identify two major fiber types of the facial/trigeminal complex that transmit amino acid information to the medulla. Both single and few fiber preparations respond to amino acid stimulation in the 0.1 μM to mM range. One fiber type responds best to glycine and l-alanine (i.e. Gly/Ala fibers) whereas the other fiber type is best stimulated by l-proline and glycine betaine (hereafter referred to only as betaine) (i.e. Pro/Bet fibers). We demonstrate that betaine, which does not alter the pH of the seawater and therefore does not activate the animals' highly sensitive pH sensors (Caprio et al., Science 344:1154-1156, 2014), is sufficient to elicit appetitive food search behavior. We further show that the amino acid specificity of fibers of the facial/trigeminal complex in P. japonicus is different from that in Ariopsis felis (Michel and Caprio, J. Neurophysiol. 66:247-260, 1991; Michel et al., J. Comp. Physiol. A. 172:129-138, 1993), a representative member of the only other family (Ariidae) of extant marine catfishes.

Abstract:The sequence motif 5' TYTTCACATGY 3' functions as an upstream activation site common to both yeast fatty acid synthase genes, FAS1 and FAS2. In addition, this UASFAS element is shared by all so far characterized genes of yeast phospholipid biosynthesis. We have investigated the influence of a functional INO4 gene previously described as a regulator of inositol biosynthesis on the expression of FAS1 and FAS2. In a delta ino4 null allele strain, both genes are expressed at only 50% of wild type level. Using individual UASFAS sequence motifs inserted into a heterologous test system, a drastic decrease of reporter gene expression to 2-10% of the wild type reference was observed in the delta ino4 mutant. In gel retardation assays, the protein-DNA complex involving the previously described FAS binding factor 1, Fbf1, was absent when using a protein extract from the delta ino4 mutant. On the other hand, this signal was enhanced with an extract from cells grown under conditions of inositol/choline derepression. Subsequent experiments demonstrated that INO4 expression is itself affected by phospholipid precursors, mediated by an UASFAS element in the INO4 upstream region. Thus, in addition of being an activator of phospholipid biosynthetic genes, INO4 is also subject to a positive autoregulatory loop in its own biosynthesis.

Abstract:Although much attention has been paid in the literature to the morphology of the tongue in various animal species, including some Felidae, it has not yet been described in detail in the vulnerable Neofelis nebulosa and Panthera leo bleyenberghi and the last concern Lynx lynx and Otocolobus manul. Therefore, the present study aimed to characterize the features of the tongue surface, lingual glands and lyssa in the above-mentioned four selected wild species of the Pantherinae and Felinae subfamilies. Macroscopic, histological, histochemical and ultrastructural analyzes were used in the present work. Comparative analyzes of the dorsal tongue surface showed the presence of mechanical lingual papillae on five subtypes of filiform papillae on the apex and body and conical papillae on the root of the tongue. Gustatory papillae in the four analyzed species were fungiform papillae and various numbers of vallate papillae. Foliate papillae were absent in P. leo bleyenberghi and L. lynx, while delicate smooth folds, which were separated by parallel grooves but without taste buds, were present in N. nebulosa. The vallate and foliate papillae were accompanied by lingual glands, which produced a serous secretion, whereas the mixed lingual glands of the lingual root were with a predominance of mucus secretions comparable to four captive Felidae species. In the median plane on the ventral surface of the apex under its epithelium and within the muscle fibers, the lyssa was also observed to a varying degree, with the least developed, and thought about the size of the entire tongue, was in P. leo bleyenberghi. The lyssa structure in the four species was dominated by adipose tissue. The obtained results contribute knowledge concerning the functional anatomy of the tongue in four selected Felidae species, especially in terms of comparative anatomy.

Abstract:The Yunnan Caecilian(Ichthyophis bannanicus) is the Gymnophiona species found only in China.Here we report the dentition of I.bannanicus at different developmental stages.The results show that the teeth of I.bannanicus are derived from the basal layer cells of the oral epidermis.A mature tooth has two parts linked by a fibrous ring,namely pedicel and crown.The teeth are homodont and nail-like with bicuspid.Both maxilla and submaxilla of the adult individuals have two teeth rows,and one or two teeth grow from each locus.But the numbers of teeth and loci in the maxilla are usual more than those in the submaxilla.Moreover,the number of lingual series teeth is more than that of labial series teeth in the maxilla,while opposite trend is observed in the submaxilla.The number and loci of teeth increase at the posterior jaw as individual grows.Numerous teeth are found in the state of replacement or abscission in the sub-adult and adult.Meanwhile,sparse attachment of the functional teeth interlaced with unfunctional teeth change to dense and regular attachment of functional teeth.We also compare the dentition of I.bannanicus with that of other caecilians.
The Tongue Dorsal Surface in Fish: A Comparison Among Three Farmed Species

Abstract:The oral cavity of vertebrates has a very important role in many functions strictly related to the food processing. Two species, sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax and seabream Sparus aurata, are mainly involved in the aquaculture industry in the mediterranean area; moreover, the white seabream Diplodus sargus sargus was recently chosen as the best candidate for the diversification of species of commercial interest. This investigation was carried out, using the standard procedures for light and scanning electron microscopy, to analyse the morphology of the tongue dorsal surface in order to show whether relationships are present between the tongue morphology and the nutritional choices of these species. In all the three investigated species, three different areas were observed on the dorsal lingual surface: an apex, a body and a root. In the sea bass D. labrax, numerous caninelike teeth, organized in pads, were present along the dorsal surface. The presence of numerous taste buds, scattered on the tongue, was shown. In the seabream S. aurata, the apical part of the tongue is inserted in a pouch with a characteristic medial ridge on the body surface. Numerous taste buds were scattered on the whole surface. In the white seabream D. sargus sargus, a pouch partially covering the apex was clearly observed. In the pouch, filiform-like and foliate-like papillae can be distinguished. The results show the important role of the fish tongue in the food ingestion process, demonstrating the interaction of food processing, taste and morphological characteristics.
A preliminary analysis of dental microstructure in Hamipterus (Pterosauria, Pterodactyloidea)

Abstract:The toothed members of Pterosauria display an extremely wide range of tooth morphologies that supported a variety of feeding habits. Histological studies on the teeth of different pterosaur clades are potentially valuable in understanding the development of their tooth diversity. In this study, we used histological sections and scanning electron microscopy to describe and interpret the tooth microstructure of Hamipterus (Pterodactyloidea). Our analysis is based on seven teeth of Hamipterus (six isolated and one from a skull) from the Lower Cretaceous collected in Hami, China. Our results show that the enamel on the tooth crown is thin (~25 μm) in Hamipterus and covers only approximately half of the tooth crown. This thin enamel of the Hamipterus tooth makes it vulnerable and often becomes damaged during taphonomic and diagenetic processes. The radicular pulp inside the conical-shaped root shows a spindle space with a small foramen at the bottom, while the coronal pulp shows a small tunnel (100-140 μm in diameter). We estimate that the small teeth of Hamipterus likely took approximately 80 days to form. Furthermore, the tooth has Andresen lines, which represent 7-15 days period. For stable articulation of the tooth in the alveolus, the thick cellular cementum is concentrated on the lingual side of the root. The acellular cementum (~40 μm thick) layer runs from the root to the partial tooth crown.

Abstract:Acoetid polychaetes were collected from shallow waters off Kochi Prefecture and Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. The specimens could be assigned to the genus Polyodontes Blainville, 1828, but are different from all the known species of the genus by the following characters: ommatophores with short neck; palps with minute papillae; parapodia without branchiae; the acicular neurochaetae always lacking aristae and having hairs only on a small area of their subdistal end; and antennae with brown dots. They are herein morphologically described as a new species and a partial 658-bp COI sequence as a DNA barcode is provided for future taxonomic studies.

Abstract:Bovine teeth have been considered as an excellent substitute for human teeth for dental research, however, the enamel microstructures of bovine incisors that include arrangements of prisms and interprisms, and their spatial relationships have not been well described. The aim of this study was to investigate the detail enamel microstructures of bovine incisors. Eight bovine mandibular incisors were cut into 77 pieces at eight equal intervals either in the longitudinal direction or in the horizontal direction before each piece had been tangentially cut (parallel to enameldentin junction) through the middle of the enamel thickness. All the sectioned surfaces were treated 1 M HCl for 10 sec to expose the prisms and interprisms before observation by scanning electron microscopy. The parallel enamel prisms were located in all the outer enamel, the cervical region and the incisal ridge of the bovine incisors. Most labial inner enamel and the cingulum of lingual inner enamel were composed of the HunterSchreger bands with the characteristics of decussating groups of prisms and decussating planes between interprisms and prisms. Abstract:Our research aims to conduct a comprehensive ultrastructural, histochemical, and immunohistochemical examination of Tarentola annularis' tongue, utilizing various techniques such as light, scanning electron microscopy, and morphometric analysis. The complex papillary system consisted of four conical subtypes and one filiform type. The apex carried three conical subtypes (elongated, quadrilateral, and round); the midtongue carried two papillary types (quadrilateral conical and rectangular pointed filiform ); and the hindtongue carried two conical subtypes (quadrilateral and elongated serrated). The dorsal papillary surface carried little taste pores on the foretongue and taste buds on the midtongue. The foretongue had a slightly stratum corneum that spread to coat the papillae , while the mid- and hindtongue did not. The glands are absent from the foretongue but are found in the interpapillary spaces of the mid- and hindtongue. Histochemical analysis reveals the presence of collagen fibers in the muscle bundles and the papillary core. The midtongue glands exhibited a strong reaction to AB and PAS, while the hindtongue showed moderate AB positivity and strong positive PAS. The cytokeratin expression in the foretongue papilla was positive, whereas the papillae in other regions were negative. The Tarentola annularis exhibits distinctive lingual structural characteristics due to its varied feeding habits influenced by available food particles.

Abstract:Two specimens of the pycnodont Haquelpycnodus picteti from the Cenomanian (Late Cretaceous) of Lebanon possess small non-dental odontodes flanking the teeth inside the oral cavity. These odontodes are distributed labially with respect to the vomerine and prearticular dentition, corresponding to the internal face of the cheek and in front of the maxilla. They have no relation to any of the bones in the mouth region and were situated in the endo-oral mucosa. This dentition pattern resembles that of the earliest osteichthyans and stem-gnathostomes. SEM-investigation of the non-dental odontodes demonstrates a thick layer of orthodentine covered by two thin outer layers of acrodin. The microchemical composition of these odontodes corresponds to those of the dermal scales (derived from odontodes) that are distributed in the integument of the same examined specimen. Both morphology, ultrastructure, and topographic relationships demonstrate that these structures are dermal and not dental odontodes. The reappearance of dermal odontodes in the dentition of individual specimens of Haquelpycnodus thus reflects the latent capacity of the endo-oral mucosa to form non-dental odontodes. These odontodes probably exerted lateral pressure to the content within the oral cavity, which took place synchronously with the prehensile movements of the incisors.

Abstract:Herpailurus yagouaroundi , popularly known as the jaguarundi cat, is a small cat with a wide territorial distribution. Understanding its morphological characteristics is of great importance for the evolution of scientific knowledge of the species and its eating habits. With that in mind, the objective was to describe the morphology of its oral cavity to contribute to future studies on its diet in captivity. Three specimens of H. yagouaroundi were used, and underwent the process of fixation in 10% formaldehyde, photodocumentation, preparation of histological slides for evaluation of lips, cheeks, hard palate, soft palate and tongue, for subsequent photomicrography. Macroscopically, the animal presented tactile hairs in the region of the cheek and close to the lips, the latter with a blackish color and smooth appearance, hard palate with wrinkles and palatine grooves full of palatine papillae, and soft palate with folds of the mucosa. The tongue had an elongated shape with different thicknesses in each region, at the apex of the tongue, filiform papillae were observed, including fungiform ones. At the base of the organ, vallate papillae, conical papillae, more delicate than the filiform ones, foliate papillae and marginal papillae were observed on the side of the tongue. Analyzing the literature, it was possible to prove that the jaguarundi cat has characteristics very similar to those of large cats. Evaluating the presence of a greater variety of lingual papillae, it is suggested that the eating habits of jaguarundi cats are more restricted and that they are more selective in their food.

Abstract:Objectives: Maintaining effective and efficient occlusal morphology presents adaptive challenges for mammals, particularly because mastication produces interactions with foods and other materials that alters the geometry of occlusal surfaces through macrowear and/or catastrophic failure (i.e. "chipping"). Altered occlusal morphologies are often less effective for masticating materials of given diet-but not always-some species exhibit dental sculpting, meaning their dentitions are set up to harness macrowear to hone their occlusal surfaces into more effective morphologies (i.e. secondary morphologies). Here we show that dental sculpting is present in the folivorous Presbytis rubicunda of Borneo. Methods: Thirty-one undamaged lower second molars of P. rubicunda exhibiting various stages of macroscopic wear were micro-CT scanned and processed into digital surfaces. The surfaces were measured for convex Dirichlet normal energy (vDNE, a measure of surface sharpness), and degree of surface wear. Regression analyses compared surface sharpness with several measures of wear to test for the presence and magnitude of dental sculpting. Results: Positive correlations between the wear proxies and vDNE reveal that P. rubicunda wear in such a way as to become sharper, and therefore more effective chewing surfaces by exposing enamel-dentine junctions on their occlusal surfaces and then honing these junctions into sharpened edges. Compared to another primate folivore in which increasing surface sharpness with macrowear has been demonstrated (i.e., Alouatta palliata), the worn surfaces are similarly sharp, but the dental sculpting process appears to be different. Discussion: The results presented here suggest that not only do some primates exhibit dental sculpting and the attendant secondary morphology, but that there appear to be multiple different morphological configurations that can achieve this result. P. rubicunda has thicker enamel and a more stereotyped wear pattern than A. palliata, although both show positive correlations of occlusal surface sharpness (vDNE) with various wear proxies. These findings shed light on the varied approaches for the maintenance of effective and efficient occlusal surfaces in primates.

Abstract:The external morphology, internal oral morphology, the chondrocranium and the hyobranchial apparatus of Elachistocleis bumbameuboi, E. cf. piauiensis, E. cesarii and E. bicolor are described and compared with each other and with other species of microhylids using available descriptions from the literature. The general morphology of Elachistocleis species is conservative in many aspects. Differences between species are subtle and are found in the body shape, the edge of the snout, fin height, if the lateral line is evident, the presence of regular pustules in the buccal roof arena, the posterolateral edge of the cartilago suprarostralis, the shape of the fenestra in the occipital region, presence or absence of fenestra hypophysea, the margin of the processus antorbitalis, expansions in the ventrolateral process, the shape and inclination of the fenestra subocularis, whether the subotic process is single or slightly bifid, and the inclination of the processus anterolateralis hyalis.

Abstract:Forty-four patients with histologically confirmed acute cholecystitis (AC) underwent attempted laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) from August 1990 to February 1994 and were retrospectively reviewed. During this time frame, LC was attempted in all patients with AC. Twelve of the patients were scheduled for elective LC as they were not thought to have AC preoperatively. Interestingly, eight of these unsuspected cases of acute cholecystitis had both a normal preoperative white blood cell count and were afebrile. The other 32 patients had a clinical presentation consistent with AC. The only diagnostic finding common to all cases of AC was abdominal pain and tenderness. In addition to AC, five patients also had gallstone pancreatitis, and three others were found to have concomitant choledocholithiasis. Fourteen patients required intraoperative conversion to open cholecystectomy for a laparoscopic success rate of 68%. The most common reason for conversion was difficulty in the dissection or unclear anatomy caused by dense adhesions. LC is an appropriate surgical treatment of AC, provided the surgeon abandons the laparoscopic approach if unable to safely proceed. Diagnostic and admission criteria for AC that requires elevated white blood cell count and/or fever may need revision.
