Abstract:Photo-induced charge separation (CS) and charge recombination (CR) are crucial for molecular systems used in artificial photosynthesis, photovoltaics, and photocatalysis, and these processes are also important for fundamental photochemical studies. This review article focuses on the recent developments in CS/CR, long-lived charge transfer (CT) state formation, and CR-induced intersystem crossing (ISC) in organic molecular systems, ranging from discussions on the molecular structural features dictating the kinetics and thermodynamics of CS/CR and electron spin transport, as well as the spectroscopies used for the characterization of the CS/CR and the CR-induced ISC. Emphases are put on the molecular design rationales, from the point of view of organic chemists, to achieve fast and efficient CS but slow CR, as such to access the long-lived CT state. The roles of the electron spin in controlling the CS, CR and formation of the long-lived CT state are discussed with exemplars. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectroscopy for characterization of the charge and electron spin transport in the CS, CR and ISC processes is introduced.

Abstract:Diffusional dynamics of the donor-acceptor distance in electron-transfer reactions are responsible for the appearance of a new time scale of diffusion over the distance of falloff of electronic tunneling. The distance dynamics compete with the medium polarization dynamics in the solvent-controlled electron transfer kinetics. A new solution incorporating the medium and donor-acceptor dynamics into the electron-transfer rate constant is proposed. The pre-exponential factor of the rate constant switches between a distance-independent solvent-controlled regime and exponential distance decay. The crossover between two regimes is controlled by an effective relaxation time slowed down by a factor exponentially depending on the variance of the donor-acceptor displacement. Flexible donor-acceptor complexes must show a greater tendency for solvent-controlled electron transfer. Electron-transfer energy chains are best designed by placing the redox cofactors near the crossover distance.

Quantum dynamics of the photoinduced charge separation in a symmetric donor-acceptor-donor triad: The role of vibronic couplings, symmetry and temperature

Abstract:The photoinduced charge separation in a symmetric donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) triad is studied quantum mechanically using a realistic diabatic vibronic coupling model. The model includes a locally excited DA*D state and two charge-transfer states D+A-D and DA-D+ and is constructed according to a procedure generally applicable to semirigid D-A-D structures and based on energies, forces, and force constants obtained by quantum chemical calculations. In this case, the electronic structure is described by time-dependent density functional theory, and the corrected linear response is used in conjunction with the polarizable continuum model to account for state-specific solvent effects. The multimode dynamics following the photoexcitation to the locally excited state are simulated by the hybrid Gaussian-multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree method, and temperature effects are included using thermo field theory. The dynamics are connected to the transient absorption spectrum obtained in recent experiments, which is simulated and fully assigned from first principles. It is found that the charge separation is mediated by symmetry-breaking vibrations of relatively low frequency, which implies that temperature should be accounted for to obtain reliable estimates of the charge transfer rate.

Abstract:The quantum efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) employing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) highly depends on the S-1-T-1 energy gaps (Delta E-ST) of the emitters. However, the Delta E-ST values determined in solution or even in organic thin films through a static approach continuously fail in predicting device performance. Herein, by systematically investigating the time-resolved emission spectra of several TADF emitters in various matrixes and the dielectric spectra of the matrixes, it is demonstrated that molecular organic semiconductors can undergo reversible and irreversible spatial rearrangements within a few dozen nanoseconds in an electric field created by a polarized charge-transfer state and can in turn lower the excited-state energy. In contrast to solution solvation, the polarized microenvironment in films can last for tens of microseconds or more after removing the electric field, leading to a narrowing and a broader distribution of Delta E-ST. In TADF OLEDs, the large dipole moment of emitter-based polarons is key for reducing the Delta E-ST of subsequently generated excitons by inducing the dipole orientation of the surrounding molecules. Understanding the so-called solid-state solvation with a dynamic approach can provide deeper insight into the working mechanism in organic semiconductor devices.

Abstract:Energy transfer across the donor-acceptor interface in organic photovoltaics is usually beneficial to device performance, as it assists energy transport to the site of free charge generation. Here, we present a case where the opposite is true: dilute donor molecules in an acceptor host matrix exhibit ultrafast excitation energy transfer (EET) to the host, which suppresses the free charge yield. We observe an optimal photochemical driving force for free charge generation, as detected via time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC), but with a low yield when the sensitizer is excited. Meanwhile, transient absorption shows that transferred excitons efficiently produce charge-transfer states. This behavior is well described by a competition for the excited state between long-range electron transfer that produces free charge and EET that ultimately produces only localized charge-transfer states. It cannot be explained if the most localized CT states are the intermediate between excitons and the free charge in this system.

Abstract:Molecular systems containing donor-bridge-acceptor sites or molecular antennas constitute promising candidates for organic photovoltaic device implementation. Photo-induced electron transfer in multi-chromophore molecular systems is defined by a subtle interaction between the donor and the molecular bridge, and by the system-solvent coupling. Here, we address the computation of quantum properties such as population inversion and electron transfer in molecular photo-systems composed of fulleroisoxazoline, fulleropyrrolidine, BODIPY and Zn-porphyrin, as well as their system-solvent ultrafast dynamics. The molecular complexes are modelled as two- and three-site systems, and we use the density functional theory (DFT) for obtaining the site energies required in the construction of the open system diabatic Hamiltonians relevant to the computation of the electron transfer. The site energies and electronic couplings are calculated by using a continuous polarizable model that allow for the analysis of different solvent environments, and the site-to-site couplings are computed by means of the generalized Mulliken Hush method at the DFT level. We find that the stabilization energy of the charge transfer states exhibit a significant variation for a compound embedded in different polar environments, and thus the effect due to the solvent has been analyzed for the specific cases of Methanol, THF and Toluene. We show that the incorporation of a molecular bridge generates the creation of an intermediate state that plays a crucial role in the charge transfer process by defining $\Lambda$ or cascaded-type energy schemes; this affects the asymptotic value of the transfer rate and favors the cascaded-type configuration.

Abstract:Molecular conduction operating in dielectric solvent environments are often described using kinetic rates based on Marcus theory of electron transfer at a molecule-metal electrode interface. However, the successive nature of charge transfer in such system implies that the solvent does not necessarily reach equilibrium in such process. Here we generalize the theory to account for solvent nonequilibrium and consider a molecular junction consisting of an electronic donor-acceptor system coupled to two metallic electrodes and placed in a polarizable solvent. We determine the nonequilbrium distribution of the solvent by solving diffusion equations in the strong- and weak-friction limits and calculate the charge current and its fluctuating behavior. In extreme limits: the absence of the solvent or fast solvent relaxation, the charge transfer statistics is Poissonian, while it becomes correlated by the dynamic solvent in between these limits. A Kramers-like turnover of the nonequilibrium current as a function of the solvent damping is found. Finally, we propose a way to tune the solvent-induced damping using geometrical control of the solvent dielectric response in nanostructured solvent channels.

Solvent Effects on Electronic Transitions of Highly Dipolar Dyes: A Comparison of Three Approaches

Abstract:The solvatochromism of several polar solutes, including some that contain both hydrogen bond-donating and -accepting properties (coumarins 1, 102, 120, 151, 152, and 153; nile red; and 4-aminofluorenone), is analyzed in terms of three models: the Reichardt single parameter E T N polarity scale, the multiparameter Kamlet−Taft equation, and the reaction field model. We use a “step-forward” procedure to determine which terms of the Kamlet−Taft equation are statistically significant in fitting the data. These equations provide the best fits to the data in almost all cases. We also find a correlation between the parameters s and a, which quantify the effects on the transition energy related to the solvatochromic parameters π* and α, respectively. This relationship suggests that the magnitude of a is not indicative of the strength of the hydrogen-bonding interaction, but rather reflects the additional field produced from the dipole moment of a hydrogen bond-donating molecule that is held in an orientation that roughly parallels the solute dipole.

Abstract:Understanding charge separation processes after photoexcitation in organic photovoltaics is of great importance for optimizing device performance. Many studies have associated a polaron-pair or intrachain charge transfer state in organic polymers with an increased charge separation efficiency. It is then natural to ask how the chemical structure influences charge separation, enabling a more targeted material design. Here, we report on nonadiabatic ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of the hot exciton dynamics following photoexcitation for a series of donor–acceptor polymers. We provide detailed insights into the Coulomb attractive energy and the dynamical evolution of dipole moments in the excited states. The former is correlated with polaron-pair recombination, thus preventing charge separation; the latter is a potential enabler of charge separation. We calculate the ultrafast dynamics of these relatively simple charge-separation-efficiency quantifiers, correlate them with the underlying chemical structure, and relate them to their static counterparts in statistical ensembles. Our work provides an ensemble description of the dynamic process of the photoexcited polaron formation and solidifies the role of Coulomb attractive energy and excited state dipole moment as the descriptors of this process on a microscopic level.

Abstract:A comprehensive description of the complicated dynamics of excited state evolution and charge transfer at the photochemical interface in dye-sensitized solar cells is crucial to understand the mechanism of converting solar photons to clean electricity, providing an informative basis for the future development of advanced organic materials. By selecting two triarylamine-based organic donor-acceptor dyes characteristic of the respective benzoic acid and cyanoacrylic acid anchors, in this paper we reveal stepwise excited state relaxations and multiple-state electron injections at a realistic titania/dye/electrolyte interface based upon ultrafast spectroscopic measurements and theoretical simulations. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations show that the optically generated "hot" excited state of the dye molecules can undergo a significant conformational relaxation via multistage torsional motions, and thereby transform into an equilibrium quinonoid structure characteristic of a more planar conjugated backbone. A set of kinetic parameters derived from the target analysis of femtosecond transient absorption spectra have been utilized to estimate the electron injection yield, which is in good accord with the maximum of external quantum efficiencies.

Abstract:Steady-state and time-resolved emission measurements of the solvatochromic probe coumarin 153 are used to study solvation of a dipolar solute in nondipolar solvents such as benzene and 1,4-dioxane. Contrary to the predictions of dielectric continuum theories, the Stokes shifts (or nuclear reorganization energies) that accompany electronic excitation of this solute are substantial in such solvents (∼1000 cm-1). The magnitudes of the shifts observed in both nondipolar and dipolar solvents can be consistently understood in terms of the relative strength of the interactions between the permanent charge distributions of the solute and solvent molecules. (Information concerning these charge distributions is derived from extensive ab initio calculations on the solute and 31 common solvents.) The dynamics of solvation in nondipolar solvents, as reflected in the time dependence of the Stokes shifts, is qualitatively like that observed in polar solvents. But, whereas the dynamics in polar solvents can be rather simply modeled using the solvents dielectric response as empirical input, no simple theories of this sort are currently capable of predicting the solvation dynamics in nondipolar solvents.

Abstract:Photoexcitation of a solute alters the solute–solvent interaction, resulting in the nonequilibrium relaxation of the solvation structure, often called a dynamic Stokes shift or solvation dynamics. Thanks to the local nature of the solute–solvent interaction, the characteristics of the local solvent environment dissolving the solute can be captured by the observation of this process. Recently, we derived the energy-represented Smoluchowski–Vlasov (ERSV) equation, a diffusion equation for molecular liquids, which can be used to analyze the solvation dynamics on the diffusion timescale. This equation expresses the time development for the solvent distribution on the solute–solvent pair interaction energy (energy coordinate). Since the energy coordinate can effectively treat the solvent flexibility in addition to the position and orientation, the ERSV equation can be utilized in various solvent systems. Here, we apply the ERSV equation to the solvation dynamics of 6-propionyl-2-dimethylamino naphthalene (Prodan) in water and different alcohol solvents (methanol, ethanol, and 1-propanol) for clarifying the differences of the relaxation processes among these solvents. Prodan is a solvent-sensitive fluorescent probe and is thus widely utilized for investigating heterogeneous environments. On the long timescale, the ERSV equation satisfactorily reproduces the relaxation time correlation functions obtained from the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for these solvents. We reveal that the relaxation time coefficient on the diffusion timescale linearly correlates with the inverse of the translational diffusion coefficients for the alcohol solvents because of the Prodan-solvent energy distributions among the alcohols. In the case of water, the time coefficient deviates from the linear relationship for the alcohols due to the difference in the extent of importance of the collective motion between the water and alcohol solvents.

Abstract:Abstract Charge-transfer-to-solvent states in aqueous halides are ideal systems for studying the electron-transfer dynamics to the solvent involving a complex interplay between electronic excitation and solvent polarization. Despite extensive experimental investigations, a full picture of the charge-transfer-to-solvent dynamics has remained elusive. Here, we visualise the intricate interplay between the dynamics of the electron and the solvent polarization occurring in this process. Through the combined use of ab initio molecular dynamics and machine learning methods, we investigate the structure, dynamics and free energy as the excited electron evolves through the charge-transfer-to-solvent process, which we characterize as a sequence of states denoted charge-transfer-to-solvent, contact-pair, solvent-separated, and hydrated electron states, depending on the distance between the iodine and the excited electron. Our assignment of the charge-transfer-to-solvent states is supported by the good agreement between calculated and measured vertical binding energies. Our results reveal the charge transfer process in terms of the underlying atomic processes and mechanisms.

Abstract:Ultrafast dynamic solvent properties are recognized to play an important role in controlling the rate of charge transfer reactions. 1 Dynamic solvation has been studied by time dependent fluorescence Stokes shift measurements of dipolar chromophores. However, only one measurement with sufficient time resolution to reveal a large contribution arising from underdamped solvent motion has been reported.2 The solvent motions giving rise to the solvent response should also contribute to the collective nuclear response in transient birefringence measurements of the neat liquid.3 To explore the connection between the two experiments and further characterize ultrafast dynamic solvation we have performed both time resolved fluorescence and transient birefringence experiments in acetonitrile, methanol, and dimethyl sulfoxide.

Abstract:The investigation of impact of through-space/through-bond electronic interaction among chromophores on photoexcited-state properties has immense potential owing to the distinct emergent photophysical pathways. Herein, the photoexcited-state dynamics of homo-sorted π-stacked aggregates of a naphthalenemonoimide and perylene-based acceptor-donor (NI-Pe) system and a fork-shaped acceptor-bisdonor (NI-Pe2) system possessing integrally stacked peri-substituted donors was examined. Femtosecond transient absorption (fsTA) spectra of NI-Pe monomer recorded in chloroform displayed spectroscopic signatures of the singlet state of Pe; 1Pe*, the charge-separated state; NI-⋅-Pe+⋅, and the triplet state of Pe; 3Pe*. The examination of ultrafast excited-state processes of NI-Pe aggregate in chloroform revealed faster charge recombination ( τ C R a ${{\tau }_{CR}^{a}}$ =1.75 ns) than the corresponding monomer ( τ C R m ${{\tau }_{CR}^{m}}$ =2.46 ns) which was followed by observation of a broad structureless band attributed to an excimer-like state. The fork-shaped NI-Pe2 displayed characteristic spectroscopic features of the NI radical anion (λmax~450 nm) and perylene dimer radical cation (λmax~520 nm) upon photoexcitation in non-polar toluene solvent in the nanosecond transient absorption (nsTA) spectroscopy. The investigation highlights the significance of intrinsic close-stacked arrangement of donors in ensuring a long-lived photoinduced charge-separated state ( τ C R ${{\tau }_{CR}}$ =1.35 μs) in non-polar solvents via delocalization of radical cation between the donors.
Electrode Reactions in Slowly Relaxing Media

Abstract:Standard models of reaction kinetics in condensed materials rely on the Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution for the population of reactants at the top of the free energy barrier separating them from the products. While energy dissipation and quantum effects at the barrier top can potentially affect the transmission coefficient entering the rate preexponential factor, much stronger dynamical effects on the reaction barrier are caused by the breakdown of ergodicity for populating the reaction barrier (violation of the Boltzmann-Gibbs statistics). When the spectrum of medium modes coupled to the reaction coordinate includes fluctuations slower than the reaction rate, such nuclear motions dynamically freeze on the reaction time-scale and do not contribute to the activation barrier. Here we consider the consequences of this scenario for electrode reactions in slowly relaxing media. Changing electrode overpotential speeds electrode electron transfer up, potentially cutting through the spectrum of nuclear modes coupled to the reaction coordinate. The reorganization energy of electrochemical electron transfer becomes a function of the electrode overpotential, switching between the thermodynamic value at low rates to the nonergodic limit at higher rates. The sharpness of this transition depends of the relaxation spectrum of the medium. The reorganization energy experiences a sudden drop with increasing overpotential for a medium with a Debye relaxation, but becomes a much shallower function of the overpotential for media with stretched exponential dynamics. The latter scenario characterizes electron transfer in ionic liquids. The analysis of electrode reactions in room-temperature ionic liquids shows that the magnitude of the free energy of nuclear solvation is significantly below its thermodynamic limit.
