Abstract:We screened a custom-made candidate gene cDNA array comprising 300 genes. Genes chosen have either been implicated in schizophrenia, make conceptual sense in the light of the current understanding of the disease, or are located on high-susceptibility chromosome locations. The array screen using prefrontal cortex tissue from 10 schizophrenia and 10 control brains revealed robust up-regulation of apolipoprotein L1 (apo L1) by 2.6-fold. The finding was cross-validated in a blinded quantitative PCR study using prefrontal cortex tissue from the Stanley Foundation brain collection, Bethesda, MD. This collection consists of 15 schizophrenia, 15 bipolar disorder, 15 major depression, and 15 control individuals, all 60 brains being well-matched on conventional parameters, with antipsychotic drug exposure in the schizophrenia and bipolar disorder groups. Significant up-regulation of apo L1 gene expression in schizophrenia was confirmed. Using quantitative PCR, expression profiles of other members of the apo L family (apo L2–L6) were investigated, showing that apo L2 and L4 were highly significantly up-regulated in schizophrenia. Results were then confirmed in an independent set of 20 schizophrenia and 20 control brains from Japan and New Zealand. Apo L proteins belong to the group of high density lipoproteins, with all six apo L genes located in close proximity to each other on chromosome 22q12, a confirmed high-susceptibility locus for schizophrenia and close to the region associated with velocardiofacial syndrome that includes symptoms of schizophrenia.
Correlates of behavioral and emotional disorders among school-going adolescents in Uganda

Abstract:Background: Adolescence is a critical development transition period that increases vulnerability to poor mental health outcomes. Recent evidence suggests that 9.6% and 11.5% of adolescents in Uganda experienced behavioral and emotional disorders, respectively. We examined the factors associated with emotional and behavioral health outcomes among school-going adolescents in Uganda. Methods: This cross-sectional study surveyed 1,953 students aged 10-24 enrolled in Central and Eastern Uganda secondary schools selected by stratified random sampling. Our outcome variables were (i) emotional and (ii) behavioral disorders that were measured using the Child and Adolescent Symptom Inventory-5 (CASI-5) diagnostic criteria outlined in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual-5 (DSM-5). Emotional disorders included major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and separation anxiety disorder. Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder were considered behavioral disorders. Covariates included socio-demographic, hardship-related experiences, and school-related characteristics. Modified Poisson and logistic regression models were appropriately run for the factors independently associated with respective outcomes. Prevalence ratios (PR), odds ratios (OR), and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were reported with p<0.05 considered significant. Results: Participants’ mean age was 15.5 (SD=2.0) years; 54.7% were female, 5.7% had a behavioral disorder, and 17.4% had an emotional disorder. In the adjusted models, factors independently associated with higher odds of behavioral disorder were age (OR=1.2; 95%CI 1.1,1.4) and family history of mental illness (OR=1.9; 95%CI 1.2,3.3). Factors independently associated with a higher risk of emotional disorder were being female (PR=1.5; 95%CI 1.2,1.8), being enrolled in advanced education (PR=1.7; 95%CI 1.2,2.4), and attending private school (PR=1.4; 95%CI 1.1,1.8). Conclusions: Behavioral and emotional disorders are prevalent among adolescents enrolled in secondary schools in Central and Eastern Uganda. Further inquiry using longitudinal designs is essential to understanding pathways for potential causality of the identified associations. School-based programs may consider routine screening for multi-level risk factors to improve the mental health of school-going adolescents.

Abstract:Depression is a leading cause of disability, morbidity, and mortality among adolescent girls in Africa, with varying prevalence across different populations. However, there is paucity of data on the burden of depression among priority groups in unique settings like adolescent girls living in refugee settlements, where access to mental health services including psychosocial support and psychiatric consultation is scarce. We conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study among adolescent girls from 4 selected refugee settlements in Obongi and Yumbe districts, Uganda. A multi-stage sampling, and cluster sampling techniques, where each settlement represented 1 cluster was done. Prevalence of depression was assessed using the patient health questionnaire-9 modified for adolescents, followed by the P4 screener assessment tool for suicidal risks. We performed modified Poisson regression analysis to establish predictors of depression. P < .05 was considered statistically significant. We included 385 participants with a mean age of 17 (IQR: 15–18) years. The prevalence of depression was 15.1% (n = 58, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 11.6–19.0). Overall, 8.6% (n = 33) participants had recent suicidal thoughts (within 1 month) and 2.3% (n = 9) attempted suicide. Participants who experienced pregnancy (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR]: 2.4, 95% CI: 1.00–5.94, P = .049), sexual abuse (aPR: 2.1, 95% CI: 1.19–3.76, P = .011), and physical abuse (aPR: 1.7, 95% CI: 1.01–2.74, P = .044) were independently associated with depression. In this study, we found about one in every 6 adolescents living in refugee settlements of northern Uganda to suffer from depression, particularly among those who experienced adolescent pregnancy and various forms of abuses. Incorporating mental health care in the existing health and social structures within the refugee settlements, exploring legal options against perpetrators of sexual abuse and encouraging education is recommended in this vulnerable population.

Abstract:Introduction: Depression is projected to become the leading cause of disability as well as the leading contributor to the global burden of disease by 2030. Depression in adolescents is a public health concern as it increases the risk of substance abuse, relationship difficulties, suicide, and poor academic performance. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of depression and its associated risk factors among adolescents. Methods: This was a school-based cross-sectional study involving 1428 adolescents aged 10–19 years in secondary schools in the Port Harcourt metropolis, Rivers State, Nigeria. Adolescents were selected using multistage sampling technique. Data on sociodemographic and family structure were obtained using a self-administered pretested semi-structured questionnaire. The presence of depression was determined using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Adolescents with BDI scores of ≥18 were categorized as depressed. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed at P < 0.05. Results: Of the 1428 adolescents recruited, 563 (39.4%) were males. The mean age was 14.30 ± 2.04 years. The prevalence of depression was 21.9% (n = 313). Significantly higher odds of depression were reported among females (adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 1.447; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.107–1.891; P = 0.007), low socioeconomic status (AOR: 1.409; 95% CI: 1.064–1.865; P = 0.017), and family structures that were not monogamous (AOR: 1.586;95% CI: 1.152–2.183; P = 0.005). Conclusion: Depression is not uncommon among in-school adolescents in Nigeria. In addition to the inclusion of screening for depression in the school health program, measures to reduce the burden are advocated, especially among female adolescents and adolescents from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

It has been associated with a profound negative impact on their physical, social, and mental well-being. Aim of the Study: To ascertain the factors associated with depression among school-going adolescent girls in district Barabanki of Uttar Pradesh. Settings and Design: School-based cross-sectional study. Subject and Methods: The study was conducted among 2187 school-going adolescent girls (10–19 years) in Barabanki district from September 2016 to September 2017 using multistage sampling. Sociodemographic characteristics such as age, residence, family background, and socioeconomic status were assessed through direct interview of the adolescent girl, with its reconfirmation from school records. Eleven-item Kutcher Adolescent Depression Scale was used for assessment of depression. Statistical Analysis Used: Probability (P) was calculated to test for statistical significance at 5% level of statistical significance. Association between risk factors and depression was determined using bivariate analysis followed by multivariate logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of depression was found to be 39.7%. Multiple logistic regression revealed that depression was significantly higher among those residing in rural areas [odds ratio (OR) 3.32; P < 0.001], those in early and mid-adolescent age group (OR 2.51; P < 0.001), those studying in private schools (OR 3.22; P < 0.001), and those with Hindi as the medium of instruction (OR12.50; P < 0.001). Depression was also found to be significantly higher among those whose mothers were educated up to primary (OR 3.19; P < 0.01) or up to intercollege (OR 1.59; P < 0.001) when compared with illiterate mothers. Similarly, depression was found to be more common among those girls whose fathers were educated up to intercollege (OR 1.29; P < 0.05) or were graduate and above (OR 1.58; P < 0.001). Conclusion: A significant proportion of school-going adolescent girls were suffering from depression, which reflects the need for reinforcement and strengthening of school-based mental health screening programs. Parents, teachers, and community health workers should work as a team to deal with the problem in a more effective way.
Prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress and their risk and protective factors among secondary students in Rwanda during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Introduction: Compelling evidence shows that the COVID-19 pandemic has detrimental effects on the mental health of university students. However, little is known about the psychological distress experienced by students from high schools during the pandemic. This study, therefore, sought to examine the prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress and their associated factors among students from high schools in Rwanda. Methods and materials: A retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted on 384 students randomly selected from high schools. Data were collected using standardized measures of mental disorders and their associated factors. Bivariate and multivariate analyses based on the odds ratio were used to indicate the associated factors of anxiety, depression, and stress. Results: The results indicated that slightly above half of the participants (51%, n = 195) had clinically significant symptoms of depression, 30.3% (n = 116) had stress and 67.3% (n = 259) had anxiety. Our analyses identified several key risk factors associated with increased odds of these mental disorders. These include exposure to domestic violence, COVID-19 symptoms like cough and myalgia, eating twice per day, having one of the three mental disorders, gender, with females showing higher susceptibility, and direct contact with the people who positively tested covid-19. Conversely, protective factors such as heightened awareness about Covid-19, positive mental health, social support, eating three times, belonging to the third Ubudehe category, and a high resilience emerged as significant elements mitigating the risks of these mental health challenges within our sample. Intriguingly, religious affiliation emerged as a notable factor, with students affiliated with the Witness of Jehovah and Adventist denominations exhibited lower risks for depression and anxiety. Conclusion: Our findings highlighted a high prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress among students from secondary schools. Interestingly, this study also revealed the associated risk and protective factors of depression, anxiety, and stress in Rwandan students in high schools. Therefore, mental health interventions targeting the impact of COVID-19 on students, as young people are needed.
Internalized HIV stigma, bullying, major depressive disorder, and high-risk suicidality among HIV-positive adolescents in rural Uganda

Abstract:Background: Studies conducted in sub-Saharan Africa suggest a high prevalence of depression and suicidality among adolescents living with HIV (ALWH). This is an important public health issue because depression is known to compromise HIV treatment adherence. However, the drivers of depression and suicidality in this population are unclear. We conducted a cross-sectional study to estimate the associations between internalized stigma, bullying, major depressive disorder, and suicidality. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey between November 2016 and March 2017, enrolling a consecutive sample of 224 ALWH aged 13-17 years. We collected information on demographic characteristics, internalized HIV-related stigma (using the six-item Internalized AIDS-Related Stigma Scale), bullying victimization (using the nine-item Social and Health Assessment Peer Victimization Scale), major depressive disorder [using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview for Children and Adolescents (MINI-KID)], and suicidality (also using the MINI-KID). We fitted multivariable logistic regression models to estimate the associations between stigma, bullying, major depressive disorder, and suicidality. Results: Thirty-seven participants (16%) had major depressive disorder, 30 (13%) had suicidality, and nine (4%) had high-risk suicidality. Ninety-one participants (41%) had high levels of internalized stigma, while 97 (43%) reported two or more bullying events in the past year. In multivariable logistic regression models, major depressive disorder had a statistically significant association with bullying (AOR = 1.09; 95% CI 1.00-1.20; p = 0.04); while suicidality (low, moderate, high risk) had statistically significant associations with both bullying (AOR = 1.09; 95% CI 1.01-1.17; p = 0.02) and stigma (AOR = 1.30; 95% CI 1.03-1.30; p = 0.02). Conclusions: Among ALWH in rural Uganda, stigma and bullying are strongly associated with major depressive disorder and suicidality. There is a need to incorporate psychological interventions in the mainstream HIV care to address these challenges for optimal management of HIV among ALWH.
Parental Depression and Associations with Parenting and Children’s Physical and Mental Health in a Sub-Saharan African Setting

Abstract:Depression is one of the most prevalent mental health challenges in low- and middle-income countries. However, the mechanisms of parental depression on children’s development are understudied in these countries. This study examined the prevalence of parental depression, contextual predictors of parental depression, and the associations between parental depression, parenting and children’s development in one of the Sub-Saharan African countries-Uganda. Three hundred and three Ugandan parents of young children were recruited and interviewed. Results indicated that about 28 % of parents were depressed. Contextual factors such as low educational attainment, food insecurity, low social support, and high number of children were associated with parental depression. Structural equation modeling also indicated that Ugandan parents’ depression was associated with less optimal parenting, and higher problem behavior, lower social competence, and poorer physical health and school functioning in children. Results provide several cross cultural consistency evidence in associations among parental depression, parenting, and child development.

Abstract:Objectives: Depression and anxiety are leading causes of youth disability worldwide, yet our understanding of these conditions in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) youths is limited. Research has been sparse in SSA, and prevalence rates and correlates of these conditions remain scarcely investigated. To help address these gaps, this cross-sectional study assessed the prevalence of adolescent depression and anxiety symptoms in a community sample of high school students in Kenya. We also examined associations between those symptoms and psychosocial and sociodemographic factors. Methods: We administered self-report measures of depression and anxiety symptoms, social support, gratitude, growth mindsets, and life satisfaction to 658 students (51.37% female) aged 13 – 19.Results: Only the measures of depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9), anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder Screen-7), and social support (Multidimensional Scale for Perceived Social Support Scale) showed adequate internal consistency (Cronbach alpha > 0.70) in the study sample. Findings with these measures among Kenyan youths showed high levels of depression symptoms (45.90% above clinical cutoff) and anxiety symptoms (37.99% above clinical cutoff). Older adolescents reported higher depression and anxiety symptoms, as well as lower social support than younger adolescents. Females reported more anxiety than males, and members of minority tribes reported more anxiety than members of majority tribes.Conclusions: This study highlights the high prevalence of adolescent internalizing symptoms in Kenyan high school students, identifies important correlates of these symptoms, and illustrates the need for culturally appropriate assessment tools.

Abstract:Background: There is still wide variability in HIV disease course and other HIV-related outcomes, attributable in part to psychosocial factors such as major depressive disorder (MDD), a subject that has received little attention in sub-Saharan Africa. Methods: Using a longitudinal cohort of 1099 HIV-positive antiretroviral therapy–naive persons, we investigated the impact of MDD on 4 HIV-related negative outcome domains in Uganda. MDD was assessed using a Diagnostic Statistical Manual IV–based tool. Also collected were data on surrogate measures of the HIV-related outcome domains. Data were collected at the 3 time points of baseline, 6, and 12 months. Multiple regression and discrete time survival models were used to investigate the relationship between MDD and indices of the HIV outcomes. Results: MDD was a significant predictor of “missed antiretroviral therapy doses” [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 4.75, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.87 to 12.04, P = 0.001], “time to first visit to healthy facility” (aOR = 1.71; 95% CI: 1.07 to 2.73; P = 0.024), “time to first self-reported risky sexual activity” (aOR = 2.11, 95% CI: 1.27 to 3.49; P = 0.004) but not of “CD4 counts at months 6 and 12” (estimated effect 29.0; 95% CI: −7.8 to 65.7; P = 0.12), and “time to new WHO stage 3 or 4 clinical event” (aOR = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.12 to 2.20, P = 0.37). Conclusions: MDD significantly impacted 3 of the 4 investigated outcome domains. These results by demonstrating the adverse consequences of an untreated mental health disorder (MDD) on HIV-related outcomes further strengthen the need to urgently act on WHO's call to integrate mental health care in general HIV care.

Abstract:Genetics research has potential to alleviate the burden of mental disorders in low- and middle-income-countries through identification of new mechanistic pathways which can lead to efficacious drugs or new drug targets. However, there is currently limited genetics data from Africa. The Uganda Genome Resource provides opportunity for psychiatric genetics research among underrepresented people from Africa. We aimed at determining the prevalence and correlates of major depressive disorder (MDD), suicidality, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), alcohol abuse, generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) and probable attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among participants of the Uganda Genome Resource. Standardised tools assessed for each mental disorder. Prevalence of each disorder was calculated with 95% confidence intervals. Multivariate logistic regression models evaluated the association between each mental disorder and associated demographic and clinical factors. Among 985 participants, prevalence of the disorders were: current MDD 19.3%, life-time MDD 23.3%, suicidality 10.6%, PTSD 3.1%, alcohol abuse 5.7%, GAD 12.9% and probable ADHD 9.2%. This is the first study to determine the prevalence of probable ADHD among adult Ugandans from a general population. We found significant association between sex and alcohol abuse (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 0.26 [0.14,0.45], p < 0.001) and GAD (AOR = 1.78 [1.09,2.49], p = 0.019) respectively. We also found significant association between body mass index and suicidality (AOR = 0.85 [0.73,0.99], p = 0.041), alcohol abuse (AOR = 0.86 [0.78,0.94], p = 0.003) and GAD (AOR = 0.93 [0.87,0.98], p = 0.008) respectively. We also found a significant association between high blood pressure and life-time MDD (AOR = 2.87 [1.08,7.66], p = 0.035) and probable ADHD (AOR = 1.99 [1.00,3.97], p = 0.050) respectively. We also found a statistically significant association between tobacco smoking and alcohol abuse (AOR = 3.2 [1.56,6.67], p = 0.002). We also found ever been married to be a risk factor for probable ADHD (AOR = 2.12 [0.88,5.14], p = 0.049). The Uganda Genome Resource presents opportunity for psychiatric genetics research among underrepresented people from Africa.

Abstract:Background: Depression is defined as a state of low mood and aversion to activity. A mental health disorder characterized by persistent low mood or loss of interest in activities causing significant impairment in daily life. Depression amongst secondary school students is an issue that is often ignored. It is frequently unrecognized when present in adolescents who make up the population of secondary school students (age 10-19 years). In our environment, studies have reported that 21.2% of Nigerian adolescents are suffering from mild to moderate depression and depression when left unchecked and untreated, takes a toll on the quality of life of individuals affected. This is why this study was conducted to determine the prevalence of depression among senior secondary school students in Enugu metropolis, to create proper awareness and sensitize people involved and the public on this menace. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample size of 270 secondary school students across 10 secondary schools in Enugu metropolis. The population of 270 students was sampled using simple random sampling. All met the inclusion criteria. A self-administered semi-structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Data was analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 22. Data was presented using tables. Result: The study had a 100% response rate. Results showed the prevalence of mild depression amongst the respondents as 58.1%, the prevalence of moderate depression amongst the respondents as 31.1% while the prevalence of severe depression was 10.7%. The study found the prevalence of depression to be higher in older adolescents and females. There was also a significant relationship between satisfaction with academic performance and depression. Conclusion: There was significant level of prevalence of depression among senior secondary school students in Enugu metropolis, notably among the females, older adolescents and those who were not satisfied with their academic performance. Recommendations: Depression should be seen as what it is, a disease and awareness should be carried out to adequately sensitize the involved population on early recognition of signs and symptoms of depression, appropriate support and therapy and subsequent rehabilitation of depressed individuals.

Abstract:Background: Individuals living with albinism face unique challenges, including living situation, socioeconomic status, and the effectiveness of the health education on their mental well-being. Creating focused interventions and support networks for this susceptible group requires an understanding of how these variables interact and how depression is affected by them. The goal of this research is to better understand the intricate interaction between these factors and how it affects the mental health of albinos in Rwanda. Three main goals served as the foundation for this investigation: finding out how common depression is among Rwandans who have albinism. to identify risk factors for depression in Rwandan individuals who are albinos. Also to look at how well health education programmes work in Rwanda to raise awareness of depression among those who are albinos. This research was guide by Disability Model, Eriksons Psychology Development Theories. Materials and Methods: Using a quantitative cross-sectional design and independent variables including gender, age, religion, place of residence, socioeconomic category, parental situation (living with parents or as orphans), and health risk factors like suicidal ideation, the mixed methods study evaluated the prevalence and factors linked to depression among individuals living with albinism in Rwanda starting in September 2023. Additionally, individual interviews were used to gather qualitative data in order to assess the efficacy of health education programmes aimed at reducing depression in the study population. In order to determine the components linked to depression, quantitative studies were conducted using logistic regression models. In the research with 75 participants, all individuals were considered as respondents using census sampling technique and these were the people living with albinism beneficiaries of the Health Alerts Organization, a Rwandan non-profit organization. Results: Most were young, female, and faced various life challenges. A significant majority experienced depression (69.33%), with occupation, literacy, socio-economic category, and facing challenges showing associations in bivariate analysis. Multivariate analysis revealed that being in socio-economic category III was protective against depression (OR 0.11) while facing challenges substantially increased the odds (OR 48.15). Our study reveals a high prevalence of depression among individuals, particularly those dealing with life challenges. Occupation, literacy, socio-economic status, and challenges were linked to depression in our analysis. Socio-economic category III seemed protective, while challenges significantly increased risk. These findings emphasize the necessity for tailored interventions and support for mental health disparities, especially among vulnerable populations facing adversity. This study holds a significant importance for associations supporting individuals with albinism, providing insights into their mental health issues and specific support needs. Counselors benefit from a clearer understanding of the psychological challenges faced by this group. Conclusion: The findings can aid the Ministry of Health in planning and potential legislation to address mental health concerns among individuals with albinism, while the Ministry of Local Government can use them to develop a national social protection policy and enhance public awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with albinism.The recommendations derived from the study findings and conclusions are directed towards various stakeholders, each aiming at improving the mental health and overall well-being of people with albinism in Rwanda.

Abstract:Background Students in sub-Saharan African countries experienced online classes for the first time during the COVID-19 pandemic. For some individuals, greater online engagement can lead to online dependency, which can be associated with depression. The present study explored the association between problematic use of the internet, social media, and smartphones with depression symptoms among Ugandan medical students. Methods A pilot study was conducted among 269 medical students at a Ugandan public university. Using a survey, data were collected regarding socio-demographic factors, lifestyle, online use behaviors, smartphone addiction, social media addiction, and internet addiction. Hierarchical linear regression models were performed to explore the associations of different forms of online addiction with depression symptom severity. Results The findings indicated that 16.73% of the medical students had moderate to severe depression symptoms. The prevalence of being at risk of (i) smartphone addiction was 45.72%, (ii) social media addiction was 74.34%, and (iii) internet addiction use was 8.55%. Online use behaviors (e.g., average hours spent online, types of social media platforms used, the purpose for internet use) and online-related addictions (to smartphones, social media, and the internet) predicted approximately 8% and 10% of the severity of depression symptoms, respectively. However, over the past two weeks, life stressors had the highest predictability for depression (35.9%). The final model predicted a total of 51.9% variance for depression symptoms. In the final model, romantic relationship problems ( ß = 2.30, S . E = 0.58; p< 0.01) and academic performance problems ( ß = 1.76, S . E = 0.60; p< 0.01) over the past two weeks; and increased internet addiction severity ( ß = 0.05, S . E = 0.02; p<0.01) was associated with significantly increased depression symptom severity, whereas Twitter use was associated with reduced depression symptom severity ( ß = 1.88, S . E = 0.57; p< 0.05). Conclusion Despite life stressors being the largest predictor of depression symptom score severity, problematic online use also contributed significantly. Therefore, it is recommended that medical students’ mental health care services consider digital wellbeing and its relationship with problematic online use as part of a more holistic depression prevention and resilience program.

Abstract:Background: Depression is a hidden pandemic among adolescents with multi-factorial causal risk and risk correlates.Objectives: To find the prevalence of depression and risk factors among school-going adolescents.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 838 adolescents enrolled in 6<sup>th</sup>-11<sup>th</sup> standards (age: 11-19 years) in 15 urban schools in Patna city by using the modified Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9); binary logistic regression was applied to find significant risk correlates.Results: Depression was noted among 51.2% adolescents of our study participants: mild 32.3%, moderate 14.3%, moderately severe 3.9%, severe depression 0.6%; among early adolescents (46.2%; boys-21.2%, girls-78.8%) and among late adolescents (55.3%, boys-34.7%, girls-65.3%). Adolescent depression was significantly associated in our study with female gender, late adolescence, higher classes (9th-11th), vegetarian diet, soft drink consumption, fast foods, screen time, domestic harassment, academic dissatisfaction, parental discord as well as mental illness. Girls had higher risk who were in higher classes, on a vegetarian diet, habitually on soft drink, more screen time (>3 h), face more family nuisance, parents brawling frequently, and suffering from known mental diseases.Conclusion: Depression was noted in more than half of the adolescents, with a higher prevalence in girls, scholastic failure, higher grades, vegetarian diet, more screen time, familial disease, and conflict.
The unique contributions of depression and anxiety to suicidal ideation among Nigerian secondary school students: a cross-sectional survey

Abstract:Background: It is important to establish the pattern of suicidal ideation among adolescents with depression and anxiety. This will help the schools prevent possible complete suicide among these groups of adolescents' trough counseling and education. Objectives: This work is therefore aimed at determining the effects of depression and anxiety on adolescent suicide ideation and factors that predict suicidal ideation among adolescents attending secondary school in southeast Nigeria. Methods: A cross-sectional study among 450 secondary school adolescents in Enugu state, Nigeria. Information was obtained using the Columbia suicide severity rating scale and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Chi-square test, correlation analysis and Hierarchical logistic regression were used in the analysis, and the level of statistical significance was determined using a P-value of <0.05. Results: The prevalence of anxiety was 36.4% while that of depression was 30.7%. The prevalence of suicidal ideation was 8.4%. The prevalence of suicidal ideation among adolescents who were <15 years was 8.0% while those who were between 15 - 18 years was 13.5% and those more than 19 years of age was 22.5%. The prevalence of suicidal ideation among adolescents with depression is 21.7% and 78.3 % for those without depression while the prevalence of suicidal ideation among adolescents with anxiety is 20.1% and 79.9 % for those without anxiety. The prevalence of suicidal ideation among the poorest half was 16.4% and 10.2% in the richer half. There was a higher prevalence of suicidal ideation among the urban dwellers (53.3%) than the rural dwellers (46.7%).There was a positive correlation between suicide and age in years and this was found to be statistically significant, (n=450, r=0.107, p=0.023). A significantly higher proportion of respondents who had depression, 21.7% had suicidal ideation when compared with those who were not, (χ 2=12.170, p<0.001). Similarly, a significantly higher proportion of respondents who had an anxiety disorder, (20.1%) had suicidal ideation when compared with those who were not, 9.4%, (χ 2=10.291, p=0.001). The respondents who were 19 years and above had increased suicidal ideation, and the difference in proportions was found to be statistically significant, (χ 2=6.440, p=0.040). A significantly higher proportion of females, 16.6% had suicidal intentions when compared with the males, 7.1%, (χ 2=7.958, p=0.005). Conclusion: There is an increasing prevalence of suicidal ideation among adolescents with a preponderance of older age and female gender. There is a link between depression/anxiety and suicidal ideation. The prevalence of suicidal ideation among the poorest half was higher than that of the richer half. There was a higher prevalence of suicidal ideation among the urban dwellers than the rural dwellers.
