Abstract:A methanol to propene (MTP) process was studied experimentally in a miniature fixed bed reactor. Effects of feeding conditions, i.e. methanol feeding, olefin feeding, and methanol/olefin co-feeding were investigated respectively. The results show that the key reactions of MTP on H-ZSM-5 zeolite include methylation of methanol, oligomerization–cracking of olefins (C2~C5) and cracking of olefins (C6~C7). Methanol to propene is happened through a complex reaction network in which all steps are fast reactions, while methanol cracking, ethylene conversion, aromatic and paraffin formation are slow reactions. A comprehensive MTP reaction network with kinetic model is developed. Kinetic parameters are obtained by data fitting with the Levenberg–Marquardt method. The results show that the apparent activation energies of methanol cracking and methylation, and olefin cracking are positive, while the apparent activation energies of oligomerization–cracking are negative, which is the result of endothermic cracking reactions coupled with exothermic adsorption of olefins.
Automated Generation and Analysis of the Complex Catalytic Reaction Network of Ethanol Synthesis from Syngas on Rh(111)

Abstract:Reactions on the surface of catalysts are rather complex, and many possible reaction pathways and intermediates are involved. We here propose a method that is able to automatically generate a catalytic reaction network and identify the preferred reaction pathway with determined uncertainty. Taking syngas conversion to ethanol on Rh(111) as an example, a reaction network consisting of 95 elementary steps was generated. Using energies calculated with an ensemble of 2000 functionals, the occurrence frequency of different ethanol formation pathways was obtained through pruning of the reaction network with mean-field microkinetic modeling. We found that CHCO is the most important reaction intermediate for ethanol formation with the highest confidence, even at varied temperatures and pressures. The transition state of CH3CH2O hydrogenation, i.e. CH3CH2O–H, possesses the highest possibility to be rate-controlling. CO has the highest possibility to be the surface dominant species at all the temperatures and pressures considered. Abstract:Accurate process simulation models of naphtha steam cracking are significant for improving product yields, reducing energy consumption, and process control. However, the complete mechanistic model for steam cracking of naphtha feedstock is not available in the literature. It is a challenging task to build large-scale detailed kinetic models of such complex mixtures. The application of automatic reaction network generation is a possible way to solve this problem efficiently. An open-source automatic reaction network generator RMG is used to construct the detailed mechanistic model of naphtha steam cracking. A step-by-step construction methodology that starts with automatic reaction network generation for a single hydrocarbon and then merges reaction networks of all considered hydrocarbons according to specific merging rules is proposed. The final merged model contains 1947 species and 82130 reactions. The pyrolysis of n-decane in the literature and a set of naphtha steam cracking experiments are used to verify the accuracy of the generated reaction network for single hydrocarbon and naphtha mixture, respectively. The results show that the simulated yields of major products are in overall agreement with experiments, and the deviations of minor products are within an acceptable range.
Structure sensitivity of ethanol steam reforming over the Rh catalyst: Reaction kinetics and deactivation mechanisms

Abstract:Rh catalyst exhibits high activity and selectivity of hydrogen production for ethanol steam reforming (ESR). In this work, we used density functional theory calculations and microkinetic modeling to study the structure sensitivity of ESR over the Rh catalyst, with stepped Rh(2 1 1) and terraced Rh(1 1 1) as models. The dominant reaction paths on the two surfaces were determined by pruning a complex network under different conditions. Further microkinetic analysis of the dominant reaction pathways suggested that Rh(2 1 1) shows higher activity and CO 2 selectivity than Rh(1 1 1), but lower stability due to carbon deposition. High steam/ethanol ratio was found to be important to the reaction which can reduce carbon accumulation and improve CO 2 selectivity. The transition state of CH 3 CH 2 OH dissociation is rate-controlling over both surfaces at high temperatures, while the removal processes of C* is rate controlling on Rh(2 1 1) at low temperatures, resulting in deactivation of the step edge sites. After screening several metal dopants over Rh(2 1 1), we found that the d-band center is well correlated with carbon adsorption energy, and stability trend is consistent with experiments. Our work could provide understanding of structure sensitivity and guidelines of rational Rh-based catalyst design for the ESR reaction.

Abstract:The reaction pathway of ethanol steam reforming on Co-ZrO2 has been identified and the active sites associated with each step are proposed. Ethanol is converted into acetaldehyde and then into acetone, followed by acetone steam reforming. More than 90% of carbon was found to follow this reaction pathway. N-2 sorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy, as well as theoretical density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been employed to identify the structure and functionality of the catalysts, which was further used to correlate their performance in ethanol steam reforming (ESR). It was found that metallic cobalt is mainly responsible for the acetone steam-reforming reactions, while COO and basic sites on the support play a key role in converting ethanol into acetone via dehydrogenation and condensation/ketonization reaction pathways. The current work provides fundamental understanding of the ethanol steam-reforming reaction mechanisms on Co-ZrO2 catalysts and sheds light on the rational design of selective and durable ethanol steam-reforming catalysts. Abstract:The development of hydrogen energy is widely recognized as a key approach to addressing the energy and carbon emission challenges. Methanol steam reforming is a promising hydrogen production scheme that can provide high-purity hydrogen. In this work, we studied the primary reaction mechanisms of methanol steam reforming over the Cu(111) and Cu(211) surfaces using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and microkinetic simulations. A detailed kinetic perspective on the reaction mechanism, which is often overlooked in previous research that relies solely on DFT calculations, is provided in the current work. Our findings reveal that under typical experimental conditions, the dominant mechanism on the Cu(111) surface is the methyl formate mechanism, while the H2COO dehydrogenation mechanism is dominant on Cu(211). The activity over the Cu(111) surface was slightly higher than that over Cu(211). Based on the degree of rate control analysis results, a reaction rate equation was derived to quantitatively explain the trend of activity under different operating conditions. It was also found that CO2 selectivity was significantly higher over Cu(211) than over the Cu(111) surface. Furthermore, based on the Wulff construction scheme, copper nanoparticle models with different sizes were constructed, and a detailed structure sensitivity study was executed. This comprehensive investigation sheds light on the mechanisms of methanol steam reforming reactions over the Cu(111) and Cu(211) surfaces, providing essential insights for the design of high-performance catalysts for hydrogen production.

Abstract:Reaction mechanisms are at the core of understanding reaction systems and designing high-performance catalysts. A complex reaction system often involves various species and elementary reactions, posing a great challenge to determining the reaction mechanism. Here, we proposed a scheme to automatically generate reaction intermediates and elementary reactions to construct a complete reaction network represented by graph theory and employed a depth first search algorithm in the scheme to prune the reaction network to reduce the complexity of the network. With this scheme, microkinetic simulations of CO2 hydrogenation on Pd2Cu using the barriers predicted with the linear thermodynamics-kinetics relations were performed on the network to determine the mechanism and rate- and selectivity-controlling steps of CO2 hydrogenation to ethanol and methanol. Analysis shows that the simulated selectivity of ethanol and methanol agrees well with the experimental results. CO2 + H -> COOH is the rate-controlling step, and CHOH + H -> CH + H2O, CH2OH + H -> CH2 + H2O, and CH2OH + H -> CH3OH dominate the ethanol selectivity. Both ethanol and methanol are generated via multiple reaction pathway mechanisms. Investigations of the pruned networks show that quantitatively correct results can be obtained from the pruned or pseudocomplete reaction network, as long as the key pathways are embodied in the network. 94% ethanol selectivity of the complete network can be obtained with the pruned network composed of 60 elementary steps, compared to 176 steps of the complete network. The present work articulates graph theory representation, depth first search algorithm, linear thermodynamics-kinetics relations, and microkinetic simulations to approach complicated heterogeneous reaction systems and exemplifies their comprehensive roles in exploring complex reaction networks.
Ab Initio Study of CO Hydrogenation to Oxygenates on Reduced Rh Terraces and Stepped Surfaces

Abstract:Previously reported syngas conversion experiments on silica-supported Rh nanoparticles show that CO conversion and oxygenate selectivity vary as a function of nanoparticle size. Theoretical studies in the literature have examined the effect of steps on CO dissociation, but structure sensitivity for C-1 and C-2 oxygenates has not been systematically investigated. In this study, density functional theory-based reaction energetics and kinetics for C-H, C-C, C-O, and O-H bond formation on flat Rh(111) and stepped Rh(211) surfaces are reported and compared. Multiple paths for methanol and ethanol formation are considered to ascertain the lowest energy pathways. Nearly an identical methanol formation route via CO -> CHO -> CH2O -> CH3O -> CH3OH is found to be favored on both Rh terrace and (211) sites. CO insertion into CH2 is deduced to be the precursor for C-2 oxygenate formation irrespective of site structure. Ethanol formation pathways, however, are determined to be markedly different on flat and stepped Rh surfaces in terms of barriers and intermediates. Our results show that reaction pathways are typically preferred on Rh step sites irrespective of the bond-breaking and -making (C-H, C-C, and C-O) reactions considered.

Abstract:Kinetics study of methand steam reforming hydrogen production was carried out in self designed microreactor with conventional catalyst bed at atmospheric pressure, 450 K to 550 K and water methanol molar ratio of 1.1 to 1.3. The catalyst bed was packed by controlling the catalyst particles from less to more of gradient distribution. Experiments results showed that CO content in the products is very small and the kinetics can be least square fitting to single rate model as the following: rSR=3.72×1010 exp(-1069762/RT)PCH2OH 0.6730 PH2O 0.3707. The F statistic results showed that the correlation index of the kinetics model was greater than 0.9, and the F was 10 times greater than the critical one with the confidence domain of 99%.

Abstract:Reaction network model is essential for reactor simulation and kinetic profiling of a complex process. Comprehensive and valid proofs of network mechanism are usually lacking among experimental and simulation studies of complicated reaction process, such as ethylene furnace co-cracking. In this paper, a self-developed Ethylene cracker Simulation and Optimization System (EcSOS) software is applied for co-cracking process numerical simulation and an ingenious characterization method of reaction network is proposed for visualization and deep profiling of the radical reaction network. An effective sub-network reconstruction process is implemented by connecting the substance nodes using actual mass flow and refining key interactions. The product yield evolving trend in simulation and its reason was successfully explained by the reaction network analysis results. The radical reaction mechanism changing obtained by reaction backtracking was systematically sorted out and summarized.

Abstract:We have investigated the adsorption and decomposition of ethanol on the Rh(111) and Rh(553) surfaces at room temperature with special emphasis on the dehydrogenation. We use high resolution core level photoemission and density functional theory (DFT) based simulations. A detailed analysis of the C1s core level spectra, including analysis of the vibrational fine-structure and comparison to calculated C1s binding energy shifts, shows that the ethanol decomposes into CO, ethylidyne (C2H3), methylidyne (CH), atomic C, and hydrogen. At low ethanol exposures, CH is the dominating hydrocarbon fragment on Rh(111), whereas on Rh(553) atomic C dominates over CH, indicating an enhanced dehydrogenation due to the steps present on the latter surface. At higher ethanol exposures we find a similar behavior of atomic C dominating over hydrocarbons on Rh(553), while on Rh(111) atomic carbon remains a minority species. Our DFT based simulations show that the enhanced dehydrogenation results from a significant lowering of the CH dissociation barrier from Rh(111) to Rh(553), as well as from the dissociation changing from endothermic on Rh(111) to exothermic on Rh(553).

Abstract:This paper focus on understanding the ethylene cracking reaction (ECR) networks with complex networks approach to polish up the accuracy of the product prediction. Though the radical reaction model (Ranzi, 2005) has been widely used in industrial simulations of pyrolysis process by SPYRO for years, analysis of the reaction scheme is still one of the important subjects the scholars concerned. According to the radical kinetic scheme, a simulation system of the ethylene cracking process has been developed include the feedstock reconstruction model, detailed kinetic schemes generator, and the reactor simulation model. As the complex networks research has grown steadily for its potential to represent, characterize and model a wide range of intricate natural systems and phenomena, a modified PageRank algorithm is applied to represent the topological structure and dynamic system characteristic of ECR networks. As a result, the hubs and authorities in reaction networks are illustrated by the algorithm and correction coefficients derived from these hubs is applied in detailed kinetic schemes generator. The product yield the adjusted model predicted is verified in an industrial case of naphtha pyrolysis process which shows a reasonable match with the industrial data. Furthermore, the simplification of kinetic scheme by PageRank algorithm has also shown in this case.

Abstract:Phenol steam reforming is an attractive method for the sustainable production of hydrogen. Phenol can be found in wastewaters from the textiles and pharmaceutical industries and is further contained at high concentrations in bio-oils and tars derived from biomass pyrolysis and gasification. Despite a range of studies reporting on optimal catalysts for the reaction, respective reaction pathways have been comparatively discussed in less detail. In the current work we present a detailed kinetic study of the steam reforming of phenol over Rh and Ni-Co catalysts supported on γ-Al2O3. The effect of temperature, partial pressure of reactants, and contact time is studied to propose a reaction mechanism over the catalysts. Results suggest that initial reaction pathways are affected by the oxophilicity of the metal. Over Rh, phenoxy formation via O-H bond cleavage is prominent, while over Ni-Co, C-O bond scission appears to be dominant due to the presence of Co and its affinity to oxygen. Due to these kinetic features, the selectivity to benzene is pronounced over Ni-Co in contrast to Rh, while CO is found to be a secondary product on the bimetallic catalyst unlike the noble metal one. Across the range of conditions studied, Rh achieved higher conversion, hydrogen yield and higher stability as a result of significantly lower carbon formation as demonstrated via time-on-stream experiments and analysis of coke deposits on spent catalyst samples.

Abstract:In the present work, ethanol has been selected as a model compound to represent the typical alcohols found in bio-oil. A stable Ni/CeO2 catalyst has been designed for the production of hydrogen from catalytic steam reforming of ethanol in a continuous-flow fixed-bed reactor. The influence of reaction temperature, liquid hourly space velocity, and steam-to-carbon ratio were investigated. The Ni/CeO2 catalyst performed with high activity for 30 h at optimal conditions and did not show any deactivation. Using density functional theory, the elementary reactions involved in the decomposition of ethanol on the Ni(111) surface have been systematically calculated. The optimal pathway for the ethanol steam reforming reaction process on the surface of the catalyst is proposed.

Abstract:Different mechanisms for the formation of acetaldehyde and ethanol on the Rh-based catalysts were investigated by the TPR (temperature programmed reaction) method, and the active sites were studied by CO-TPD, TPSR (temperature programmed surface reaction of preadsorbed CO by H2) and XPS techniques. The TPR results indicated that ethanol and acetaldehyde might be formed through different intermediates, whereas ethanol and methanol might result from the same intermediate. Results of CO-TPD, TPSR, and XPS showed that on the Rh-based catalyst, the structure of the active sites for the formation of C2-oxygenates is (Rh0xRh+y)–O–Mn+ (M=Mn or Zr, x⪢y, 2≤n≤4). The tilt-adsorbed CO species is the main precursor for CO dissociation and the precursor for the formation of ethanol and methanol. Most of the linear and geminal adsorbed CO species desorbed below 500 K. Based on the suggested model of the active sites, detailed mechanisms for the formation of acetaldehyde and ethanol are proposed. Ethanol is formed by direct hydrogenation of the tilt-adsorbed CO molecules, followed by CH2 insertion into the surface CH2–O species and the succeeding hydrogenation step. Acetaldehyde is formed through CO insertion into the surface CH3–Rh species followed by hydrogenation, and the role of the promoters was to stabilize the intermediate of the surface acetyl species.

Abstract:CO2 hydrogenation over Rh catalysts comprises multiple reaction pathways, presenting a wide range of possible intermediates and end products, with selectivity toward either CO or methane being of particular interest. We investigate in detail the reaction mechanism of CO2 hydrogenation to the single-carbon (C1) products on the Rh(111) facet by performing periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations and kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations, which account for the adsorbate interactions through a cluster expansion approach. We observe that Rh readily facilitates the dissociation of hydrogen, thus contributing to the subsequent hydrogenation processes. The reverse water–gas shift (RWGS) reaction occurs via three different reaction pathways, with CO hydrogenation to the COH intermediate being a key step for CO2 methanation. The effects of temperature, pressure, and the composition ratio of the gas reactant feed are considered. Temperature plays a pivotal role in determining the surface coverage and adsorbate composition, with competitive adsorption between CO and H species influencing the product distribution. The observed adlayer configurations indicate that the adsorbed CO species are separated by adsorbed H atoms, with a high ratio of H to CO coverage on the Rh(111) surface being essential to promote CO2 methanation.

Abstract:The reaction mechanism is critical to understanding complex reaction systems in specific production processes in industries such as the petrochemical industry. In this study, we proposed a reaction network flow analysis/community-based mechanism detection/target species selection integrated framework to simplify the reaction network and extract key reaction routes. The naphtha steam cracking reaction system was preliminarily selected as an industrial example. The auto-generated reaction network was simultaneously set as an input of the PageRank-based reaction network analysis tool and community detection algorithm based on modularity analysis. After recording the importance and community affiliation information of each node in the network, the simplified communities were obtained and considered as skeletal mechanisms divided by reaction categories. Steps of target species selection were then implemented to search for the key nodes and routes in these skeletal mechanisms. The accuracy and trustworthiness of the results obtained by the framework were confirmed through a literature comparison and validation in an industrial example. The output results, including the simplified reaction networks, detected communities, and key reaction routes, are expected to bridge the gap between microscale information and macroscale phenomena.

Microkinetic Modelling of the Heterogeneously Catalyzed Hydrogenation of Glycolic Acid over Ru/C

Abstract:The heterogeneously catalyzed hydrogenation of biomass‐or CO2‐derived glycolic acid (GA) is a renewable pathway for obtaining the bulk chemical ethylene glycol (EG). In this study, the reaction network of the aqueous‐phase hydrogenation of GA is investigated over a Ru/C catalyst. As previous studies indicated, several parallel and consecutive reactions can occur in addition to the desired reaction to EG. These reactions are experimentally assessed by employing different (possible) reaction intermediates and products as reactants. The data for all individual reactions and GA hydrogenation at different reaction temperatures (120‐180°C) is combined to propose a catalytic reaction pathway network and to develop a corresponding microkinetic model. The model describes the catalytic data in the range up to 150°C, where EG is the main reaction product, with high accuracy. It is shown that selectivity for EG is highest at 120°C and decreases strongly with increasing temperatures both due to the parallel reaction of GA into AcA, which has a significantly higher activation energy than the overall hydrogenation of GA into EG, and due to degradation of EG into ethanol and volatile products. Temperatures exceeding 150°C predominantly yield volatile products, suggesting low yields of EG or AcA at higher temperatures despite enhanced GA conversion.

Abstract:The NO-CO reaction on Rh(100) and Rh(111) is a prototypical catalytic system with various practical applications, including the treatment of automotive gas exhausts. With parameters derived from first-principles calculations, the Brønsted-Evans-Polanyi (BEP) relation for the reaction steps of NO-CO on Rh(100) and Rh(111) surfaces is fitted, which is more accurate and practical for the calculation of the effect of interaction between adsorbates on activation energy compared to the basic BEP relation. Further, a kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) model for the NO-CO reaction systems on Rh(100) and Rh(111) is constructed for the exploration of the system's reaction mechanism. Besides the temperature and pressure, the coverage and activation sites are essential factors for reaction kinetic of the NO-CO reaction system. Our results are beneficial for designing more efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly next-generation catalysts.
