Abstract:Locating trapped targets using the signals of wireless devices such as mobile phones carried by targets is increasingly becoming the preferred scheme for disaster rescue. However, the accuracy of radio-localization technology currently adopted in the rescue is not high enough. To solve such problems, researchers proposed the approaches of Warwalking or Wardriving. However, both approaches are all limited by application scenarios. This paper proposes GuideLoc, a highly efficient aerial wireless localization system, which uses the target guiding technology based on region division. GuideLoc allows an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to fly over a target device and provide position coordinates of the UAV as the target location information. During the process of positioning targets, based on the result of regional division, GuideLoc uses a number of fixed antennas to get the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) and angle of arrival (AOA) information of the target and estimates the target location using the information and correspondingly controls the UAV to fly towards the target. Averaging method is also applied for determining coordinates of the target. Experiment results show that GuideLoc can in short time achieve 2.7-meter positioning accuracy in average. Compared with other wireless localization methods using UAVs proposed in the literature, it shortened the flight distance by more than 50%. In addition, energy efficiency is also improved significantly.

Abstract:Wilderness search and rescue (WiSAR) usually need to search a large and complex area and has high speed requirements. When an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is used for auxiliary operation, it usually needs to carry a variety of sensors, and it is difficult to ensure real-time performance. In recent years, through the continuous development of target detection algorithms based on deep learning, the accuracy and real-time performance of target detection for visible images are getting better. This study aims to shorten the time of search and rescue (SAR) and improve the success rate by using UAV and target detection technology. In this study, a multi-UAV cooperative system for SAR based on YOLOv5 is proposed. The system has these functions of free-grafting multiple UAVs, independent control of each UAV, real-time target detection, monocular positioning. The performance of this system is tested through several simulated search and rescue missions, and the results prove that the system can meet the requirements of search and rescue operations.

Abstract:In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have gained popularity due to their flexibility, mobility, and accessibility in various fields, including search and rescue (SAR) operations. The use of UAVs in SAR can greatly enhance the task success rates in reaching inaccessible or dangerous areas, performing challenging operations, and providing real-time monitoring and modeling of the situation. This article aims to help readers understand the latest progress and trends in this field by synthesizing and organizing papers related to UAV search and rescue. An introduction to the various types and components of UAVs and their importance in SAR operations is settled first. Additionally, we present a comprehensive review of sensor integrations in UAVs for SAR operations, highlighting their roles in target perception, localization, and identification. Furthermore, we elaborate on the various applications of UAVs in SAR, including on-site monitoring and modeling, perception and localization of targets, and SAR operations such as task assignment, path planning, and collision avoidance. We compare different approaches and methodologies used in different studies, assess the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches, and provide insights on addressing the research questions relating to specific UAV operations in SAR. Overall, this article presents a comprehensive overview of the significant role of UAVs in SAR operations. It emphasizes the vital contributions of drones in enhancing mission success rates, augmenting situational awareness, and facilitating efficient and effective SAR activities. Additionally, the article discusses potential avenues for enhancing the performance of UAVs in SAR.

A Vision-based UAV Tracker Aiming at Aerial Targets

Abstract:Autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) tracking has been widely used in inspection, rescue, follow-up and many other fields. Compared to ground targets, aerial targets are smaller, more flexible and possess more freedom of motion, which makes the task more challenging. In this paper, we propose a vision-based UAV tracker aiming at aerial targets. Firstly, a lightweight detection model is deployed for target detection and target’s position is estimated taking advantage of detection box information and camera internal parameters. Then, a flexible motion prediction method is proposed followed by an efficient and occlusion-aware front-end path searching approach. Finally, an optimization-based multicopter trajectory planning framework is employed to generate a spatio-temporal optimal trajectory. The experimental results indicate that our tracker achieves great robustness and security in both vertical and horizontal tracking.

Abstract:Recently, Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (SUAV) are used in a variety of reconnaissance, surveillance, combat applications and so on. Tracking and positioning ground moving targets using a camera mounted on SUAVs has important applications in military and civilian purposes. Although many approaches for a vision-based target positioning system have been developed, most researches are limited to target recognition algorithm or target state estimation. And hardware implementation schemes which can work well with the whole SUAV system are seldom discussed. In order to achieve an available systematic scheme, a complete visual system which incorporates a vision-based ground moving target positioning algorithm is presented in this paper. Experiment results are finally shown and commented. Experiments indicate that the system performs great real time response and high positioning precision.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the application of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in maritime search and rescue (mSAR) missions, focusing on medium-sized fixed-wing drones and quadcopters. We address the challenges and limitations inherent in operating some of the different classes of UAVs, particularly in search operations. Our research includes the development of a comprehensive software framework designed to enhance the efficiency and efficacy of SAR operations. This framework combines preliminary detection onboard UAVs with advanced object detection at ground stations, aiming to reduce visual strain and improve decision-making for operators. It will be made publicly available upon publication. We conduct experiments to evaluate various Region of Interest (RoI) proposal methods, especially by imposing simulated limited bandwidth on them, an important consideration when flying remote or offshore operations. This forces the algorithm to prioritize some predictions over others.

Abstract:The wilderness search and rescue (WiSAR) for lost persons or objects in remote wilderness areas is very challenging as these areas are almost inaccessible and the targets are concealed by the surrounding environment. The search and rescue will be very time-consuming and very costly. In this work, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with gas sensor systems is designed and studied for target detection and positioning. A typical gas sensor is designed and integrated into an UAV to enable active detection of gas information (concentration and species at different locations) in the atmosphere and continuous target positioning. Novel UAV gas sensor systems have been modeled and simulated and simulation experiments with different gas sensor frequencies and sweeping modes have been carried out. A self-adaptive tracking team consisting of multiple UAV gas sensor systems has been simulated and analyzed. The results indicated that the new UAV gas sensor systems are very efficient and precise for the difficult search and rescue tasks in the wilderness environment.

Abstract:Most traffic surveillance systems are based on videos which captured by fixed cameras on bridges, intersections, etc. However, many traffic collisions may occur in many places without such surveillance systems, e.g., in rural highway. Researchers have developed a set of techniques to improve safety on these places, while it is still not enough to reduce collision risk. Based on a novel concept, this paper proposes a traffic collisions early warning scheme aided by small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) companion. Basically, it is a vision-based driver assistance system, and the difference in comparison with the available schemes lies in the camera is flying along with the host vehicle. In particular, the system's framework and the vision-based vehicle collision detection algorithm are proposed. The small UAV works in two switchable modes, i.e., high speed flight or low speed motion. The high speed flight corresponds to the host vehicle moving in highway, while the low speed motion includes hover, vertical takeoff and landing. In addition, as the on-line machine learning is applied, the detection procedure can be implemented in real-time, which is critical in practical applications. Extensive experimental results and examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, and its real-time performance outperforms typical tracking methods such as that based on Gaussian mixture model. Moreover, this scheme can be easily extended for some other similar application scenarios.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), equipped with a variety of sensors, are being used to provide actionable information to augment first responders' situational awareness in disaster areas for urban search and rescue (SaR) operations. However, existing aerial robots are unable to sense the occluded spaces in collapsed structures, and voids buried in disaster rubble that may contain victims. In this study, we developed a framework, AiRobSim, to simulate an aerial robot to acquire both aboveground and underground information for post-disaster SaR. The integration of UAV, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and other sensors, such as global navigation satellite system (GNSS), inertial measurement unit (IMU), and cameras, enables the aerial robot to provide a holistic view of the complex urban disaster areas. The robot-collected data can help locate critical spaces under the rubble to save trapped victims. The simulation framework can serve as a virtual training platform for novice users to control and operate the robot before actual deployment. Data streams provided by the platform, which include maneuver commands, robot states and environmental information, have potential to facilitate the understanding of the decision-making process in urban SaR and the training of future intelligent SaR robots.

Abstract:Aerial scans with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are becoming more widely adopted across industries, from smart farming to urban mapping. An application area that can leverage the strength of such systems is search and rescue (SAR) operations. However, with a vast variability in strategies and topology of application scenarios, as well as the difficulties in setting up real-world UAV-aided SAR operations for testing, designing an optimal flight pattern to search for and detect all victims can be a challenging problem. Specifically, the deployed UAV should be able to scan the area in the shortest amount of time while maintaining high victim detection recall rates. Therefore, low probability of false negatives (i.e., high recall) is more important than precision in this case. To address the issues mentioned above, we have developed a simulation environment that emulates different SAR scenarios and allows experimentation with flight missions to provide insight into their efficiency. The solution was developed with the open-source ROS framework and Gazebo simulator, with PX4 as the autopilot system for flight control, and YOLO as the object detector.

Abstract:The use of multi-rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for search and rescue as well as remote sensing is rapidly increasing. Multi-rotor UAVs, however, have limited endurance. The range of UAV applications can be widened if teams of multiple UAVs are used. We propose a framework for a team of UAVs to cooperatively explore and find a target in complex GPS-denied environments with obstacles. The team of UAVs autonomously navigates, explores, detects, and finds the target in a cluttered environment with a known map. Examples of such environments include indoor scenarios, urban or natural canyons, caves, and tunnels, where the GPS signal is limited or blocked. The framework is based on a probabilistic decentralised Partially Observable Markov Decision Process which accounts for the uncertainties in sensing and the environment. The team can cooperate efficiently, with each UAV sharing only limited processed observations and their locations during the mission. The system is simulated using the Robotic Operating System and Gazebo. Performance of the system with an increasing number of UAVs in several indoor scenarios with obstacles is tested. Results indicate that the proposed multi-UAV system has improvements in terms of time-cost, the proportion of search area surveyed, as well as successful rates for search and rescue missions.

Abstract:A major challenge with Search and Rescue operations is covering a large amount of area quickly, efficiently, and accurately. With the rising prevalence of both computer vision algorithms for object detection and small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS), an effective solution emerges. This work proposes a methodology for the integration of a sUAS, sensors, and software into a search and rescue workflow. Compared to ground search and rescue operations, sUAS allow for larger and faster area coverage at a fraction of the cost of manned aircraft missions. When combined with a versatile suite of object detection algorithms incorporating aerial data from both the visual and radiometric spectrum, the proposed system is able to analyze and process real-time data faster than existing systems at greater or comparable accuracy.

Abstract:UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) have been developed and adopted for various fields including military, IT, agriculture, construction, and so on. In particular, UAVs are being heavily used in the field of disaster relief thanks to the fact that UAVs are becoming smaller and more intelligent. Search for a person in a disaster site can be difficult if the mobile communication network is not available, and if the person is in the GPS shadow area. Recently, the search for survivors using unmanned aerial vehicles has been studied, but there are several problems as the search is mainly using images taken with cameras (including thermal imaging cameras). For example, it is difficult to distinguish a distressed person from a long distance especially in the presence of cover. Considering these challenges, we proposed an autonomous UAV smart search system that can complete their missions without interference in search and tracking of castaways even in disaster areas where communication with base stations is likely to be lost. To achieve this goal, we first make UAVs perform autonomous flight with locating and approaching the distressed people without the help of the ground control server (GCS). Second, to locate a survivor accurately, we developed a genetic-based localization algorithm by detecting changes in the signal strength between distress and drones inside the search system. Specifically, we modeled our target platform with a genetic algorithm and we re-defined the genetic algorithm customized to the disaster site's environment for tracking accuracy. Finally, we verified the proposed search system in several real-world sites and found that it successfully located targets with autonomous flight.

Abstract:Utilizing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) plays a pivotal role in the localization of ground construction personnel targets within the specialized operational environments of the energy industry. To ensure the safety of personnel in these areas effectively, this study introduces an innovative dual UAV cooperative positioning system designed to address the challenges of personnel localization in various complex settings. In the first place, the research establishes a dual UAV collaborative remote sensing platform, specifically tailored for executing dual UAV flight control and ground personnel identification and localization tasks. Subsequently, this study proposes a high-precision ground personnel localization solution. This solution integrates the flight data of two UAVs with the pixel coordinates of targets in natural remote sensing imagery, enabling the precise localization of moving targets within complex environments. Moreover, due to the irregularity of ground personnel shapes in imagery, this research introduces an improved rotating target detection network based on the YOLOv7 architecture. This network is specifically optimized for detecting ground targets in remote sensing imagery, significantly enhancing the accuracy of target localization. Extensive experimental validation has demonstrated that this localization system can maintain target localization errors within a 5-meter threshold, effectively enhancing the safety and efficiency of personnel in specific operational areas of the energy industry.

Abstract:The demand is to solve the issue of UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) operating autonomously and implementing practical functions such as search and rescue in complex unknown environments. This paper proposes an autonomous search and rescue UAV system based on an EGO-Planner algorithm, which is improved by innovative UAV body application and takes the methods of inverse motor backstepping to enhance the overall flight efficiency of the UAV and miniaturization of the whole machine. At the same time, the system introduced the EGO-Planner planning tool, which is optimized by a bidirectional A* algorithm along with an object detection algorithm. It solves the issue of intelligent obstacle avoidance and search and rescue. Through the simulation and field verification work, and compared with traditional algorithms, this method shows more efficiency and reliability in the task. In addition, due to the existing algorithm's improved robustness, this application shows good prospection.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are advantageous in their high maneuverability for long-range outdoor target tracking. In this paper, we develop a UAV-based target tracking and recognition system using an intelligent gimbal system with the capabilities of accurate camera positioning, fast image processing, and multi-modality information fusion. Algorithms of consensus-based target tracking, moving background processing, and neural network-based target detection/recognition are optimized for embedded implementation. A geographic information system (GIS) is utilized to provide geo-location, environmental, and contextual information. The experimental results demonstrate the robust performance of the proposed UAV-based target tracking and recognition framework.

Abstract:A novel cooperative strategy for distributed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms with different functions, namely the mission chain-driven unmanned aerial vehicle swarms cooperation method, is proposed to allow the fast search and timely rescue of injured human targets in a wide-area outdoor environment. First, a UAV-camera unit is exploited to detect the suspected human target combined with improved deep learning technology. Then, the target location information is transferred to a self-organizing network. Then, the special bio-radar-UAV unit was released to recheck the survivals through a respiratory characteristic detection algorithm. Finally, driven by the location and vital sign status of the injured, a nearby emergency-UAV unit will perform corresponding medical emergency missions, such as dropping emergency supplies. Experimental results show that this strategy can identify the human targets autonomously from the outdoor environment effectively, and the target detection, target sensing, and medical emergency mission chain is completed successfully relying on the cooperative working mode, which is meaningful for the future search-rescue mission of outdoor injured human targets.

Abstract:This work presents an enhanced autonomous airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging system able to provide full 3D radar images from the subsurface. The proposed prototype and methodology allow the safe detection of both metallic and non-metallic buried targets even in difficult-to-access scenarios without interacting with the ground. Thus, they are particularly suitable for detecting dangerous targets, such as landmines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The prototype is mainly composed by an Ultra-Wide-Band (UWB) radar module working from Ultra-High-Frequency (UHF) band and a high accuracy dual-band Real Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning system mounted on board an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The UAV autonomously flies over the region of interest, gathering radar measurements. These measurements are accurately geo-referred so as to enable their coherent combination to obtain a well-focused SAR image. Improvements in the processing chain are also presented in order to deal with some issues associated to UAV-based measurements (such as non-uniform acquisition grids) as well as to enhance the resolution and the signal to clutter ratio of the image. Both the prototype and the methodology were validated with measurements, showing their capability to provide high-resolution 3D SAR images.

Abstract:UAVs have been widely used in many fields from civil purpose to military purpose. Having the capability of target detection and localization is critical for UAVs to accomplish the practical tasks. In this paper, the design and implementation of a target detection and localization system are proposed. The target is detected by image analysis based recognition method to gain its position in UAVs coordinate frame, and the real location of the target in world coordinate frame is then obtained by using the guidance data (position and attitude) of UAV Experiment result on detection shows that proposed detection method can be run in real time.
