Abstract:We consider a two dimensional electroconvection model which consists of a nonlinear and nonlocal system coupling the evolutions of a charge distribution and a fluid. We show that the solutions decay in time in at the same sharp rate as the linear uncoupled system. This is achieved by proving that the difference between the nonlinear and linear evolution decays at a faster rate than the linear evolution. In order to prove the sharp decay we establish bounds for decay in and a logarithmic growth in time of a quadratic moment of the charge density.

Abstract:We propose a model with a quantized degree of freedom to study the heat transport in quasi–one-dimensional systems. Our simulations reveal three distinct temperature regimes. In particular, the intermediate regime is characterized by heat conductivity with a temperature exponent γ much greater than 1/2 that was generally found in systems with point-like particles. A dynamical investigation indicates the occurrence of non-equipartition behavior in this regime. Moreover, the corresponding Poincaré section also shows remarkably characteristic patterns, completely different from the cases of point-like particles.

Abstract:We consider an electrodiffusion model describing the evolution of $N$ ionic species in a three-dimensional fluid flowing through a porous medium and forced by added body charges. We address the global well-posedness and long-time dynamics of the model. In the absence of added charges, we prove that the ionic concentrations decay exponentially fast in time to their initial spatial averages in all Sobolev norms. When the fluid undergoes the influence of given time-independent charges, we obtain the existence of a finite-dimensional global attractor.

Abstract:Electrothermal convection in a poorly conducting fluid in an alternating electric field of a horizontal capacitor is studied. The nonlinear regimes of electric convection in weightlessness are studies at low frequencies of the electric field on the basis of the pentamodal model within the framework of the electroconductive charge formation mechanism. Hysteresis transitions between two different synchronous and subharmonic regimes are found to exist. Transitions to chaos occur by means of either interemittance or a subharmonic cascade.

Abstract:This article employs linear stability theory to investigate the thermosolutal instability phenomenon within a horizontal layer of nanofluid subjected to a vertical alternating current (AC) electric field while being heated from below. The model integrates the impacts of Brownian diffusion, thermophoresis, and electrophoresis into the nanofluid dynamics. Free-free boundary conditions are assumed at the upper and lower boundaries of the fluid layer. Employing the normal mode technique, the set of coupled differential equations is solved analytically for stress-free boundaries. The computed numerical values of the stationary thermal Rayleigh number are illustrated graphically. The conditions for nonexistence of overstability are also derived. The study focuses on stationary convection, examining the analytical and graphical implications of modified diffusivity ratio, AC electric Rayleigh number, solutal Lewis number, nanofluid Lewis number, solutal Rayleigh number, and nanoparticle Rayleigh number on the system dynamics. The analysis demonstrates that the nanofluid Lewis number and modified diffusivity ratio produce a stabilizing effect on the initiation of convection, notably delaying its onset. AC electric field and solutal Rayleigh number exhibit a destabilizing influence, notably accelerating the onset of convection.

Abstract:Electroosmotic flows (EOFs) on insulated interfacial surface commonly exists as interfacial flows. Previously theoretical studies indicate that EOFs of Newtonian fluids on the insulated interfacial surface are steady in microchannels with symmetric zeta potentials (Suresh and Homsy, Physics of Fluids, 2004, 16, 2349). Restricted by flow diagnostic methods in microfluidics, few velocity measurements of instantaneous EOFs have been reported, and the existence of unsteady EOFs on the insulated surface remains unclear. In this investigation, the velocity fluctuations of EOFs generated under AC electric field (named as ACFEOF) overlapped on a steady pressure‐driven flow are measured by laser induced fluorescence photobleaching anemometer, at the diffuse electric double layer (EDL) on the bottom wall far from electrodes. Chaotic velocity fluctuations according to unsteady ACFEOF has been, for the first time, observed. Stokes number (St) and electrical Reynolds number (ReE) related to oscillation and electro‐inertial effect are suggested to control chaotic ACFEOF.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The coupling between ion transport, fluid flow, and electrostatics may give rise to electroconvection, a physical phenomenon in which the buildup of charge near selective surfaces leads to hydrodynamic instability, eventually transitioning to an unsteady and chaotic flow. Though electroconvection contains a wide range of spatiotemporal scales, averaging of the ion concentration, velocity, and electric potential fields may produce a lower-dimensional and smoother representation while still capturing the essential performance metrics: ion current density and mean applied voltage, for example. The Poisson–Nernst–Planck–Stokes equations are known to capture the chaotic dynamics of electroconvection accurately. However, there is as of yet no way to directly compute the mean fields, since the application of the well-known Reynolds-averaging procedure leads to a closure problem. In this work, we combine the macroscopic forcing method, a numerical technique for measurement of closure operators in Reynolds-averaged equations, with high-fidelity experimental data to close the equations for the mean fields in chaotic electroconvection. We show that the unclosed fluxes in the Reynolds-averaged equations may be represented to the leading order as a gradient-diffusion term, with a spatially varying eddy diffusivity that we directly measure from experimental velocity fields. As a result, we are able to directly solve for the mean ion concentration and electric potential fields by supplementing the 1D Poisson–Nernst–Planck equations with an eddy diffusivity that captures the averaged effects of mixing due to chaotic, 3D electroconvection. The resulting current-voltage curve exhibits strong agreement with experiments. Our method allows for the study of electroconvection with orders-of-magnitude cost savings by obviating the need for expensive direct numerical simulations. Additionally, our measured eddy diffusivity profiles provide a benchmark for the development of stand-alone reduced-order models of electroconvection. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.9.023701 ©2024 American Physical Society

Sparse nonlinear models of chaotic electroconvection

Abstract:Convection is a fundamental fluid transport phenomenon, where the large-scale motion of a fluid is driven, for example, by a thermal gradient or an electric potential. Modeling convection has given rise to the development of chaos theory and the reduced-order modeling of multiphysics systems; however, these models have been limited to relatively simple thermal convection phenomena. In this work, we develop a reduced-order model for chaotic electroconvection at high electric Rayleigh number. The chaos in this system is related to the standard Lorenz model obtained from Rayleigh-Benard convection, although our system is driven by a more complex three-way coupling between the fluid, the charge density, and the electric field. Coherent structures are extracted from temporally and spatially resolved charge density fields via proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). A nonlinear model is then developed for the chaotic time evolution of these coherent structures using the sparse identification of nonlinear dynamics (SINDy) algorithm, constrained to preserve the symmetries observed in the original system. The resulting model exhibits the dominant chaotic dynamics of the original high-dimensional system, capturing the essential nonlinear interactions with a simple reduced-order model.

Anomalous Heat Conductivity Induced by Finite Size and Non-Markovian Dynamics

Abstract:Heat conduction in a one-dimensional non-Markovian damping channel between two heat baths separated by a finite distance is studied numerically. It is found that the Fourier heat law is not obeyed for a finite-size underdamped channel under a Gaussian white noise and the coefficient of heat conductivity is a nonmonotonic function of the channel length in the sub-Ohmic damping case. The key dynamic feature is that the system does not approach the stationary state when it arrives at the cold bath for the former, and the system exhibits different diffusive behaviors from ballistic diffusion to subdiffusion at initial and asymptotic periods of time for the latter. We evaluate a damping-dependent critical separation size between two heat baths above which the heat conductivity becomes independent of the separation.

Abstract:We study the dynamical behaviour of mesoscopic systems in contact with a thermal bath, described either via a non-linear Langevin equation at the trajectory level -- or the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation for the probability distribution function at the ensemble level. Our focus is put on one-dimensional -- or $d$-dimensional isotropic -- systems in confining potentials, with detailed balance -- fluctuation-dissipation thus holds, and the stationary probability distribution has the canonical form at the bath temperature. When quenching the bath temperature to low enough values, a far-from-equilibrium state emerges that rules the dynamics over a characteristic intermediate timescale. Such a long-lived state has a Dirac-delta probability distribution function and attracts all solutions over this intermediate timescale, in which the initial conditions are immaterial while the influence of the bath is still negligible. Numerical evidence and qualitative physical arguments suggest that the above picture extends to higher-dimensional systems, with anisotropy and interactions.

Fluctuation-enhanced electric conductivity in electrolyte solutions

Abstract:In this letter we analyze the effects of an externally applied electric field on thermal fluctuations for a fluid containing charged species. We show in particular that the fluctuating Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations for charged multispecies diffusion coupled with the fluctuating fluid momentum equation, result in enhanced charge transport. Although this transport is advective in nature, it can macroscopically be represented as electrodiffusion with renormalized electric conductivity. We calculate the renormalized electric conductivity by deriving and integrating the structure factor coefficients of the fluctuating quantities and show that the renormalized electric conductivity and diffusion coefficients are consistent although they originate from different noise terms. In addition, the fluctuating hydrodynamics approach recovers the electrophoretic and relaxation corrections obtained by Debye-Huckel-Onsager theory, and provides a quantitative theory that predicts a non-zero cross-diffusion Maxwell-Stefan coefficient that agrees well with experimental measurements. Finally, we show that strong applied electric fields result in anisotropically enhanced velocity fluctuations and reduced fluctuations of salt concentrations.

Numerical Study of Electro-Convection Between Annular Electrodes Based on a Dissociation-Injection Mechanism

Abstract:In this work, we extend the investigation of the injection-induced electro-convection (EC) between two-dimensional concentric electrodes from perfectly insulating dielectric liquids to dielectric liquids with residual conductivity. A dissociation-injection model of the EC system is implemented by a finite-volume framework of OpenFOAM®. The morphology of hetero-charge layers in a hydrostatic regime is presented. The flow characteristics including the spatial and temporal features of the flow field, electric field, and positive/negative charge density of the EC are analyzed. The subcritical bifurcation phenomenon of EC is observed. The residual conductivity postpones the onset of EC flow and inhibits the flow strength as EC takes place. The difference between onset (Tc) and cessation (Tf) of EC flow decreases as the residual conductivity grows. Gradually increasing the electric Rayleigh number (T), the EC system sequentially evolves via hydrostatic, steady, periodic, and chaotic states with abundant bifurcations. The initialization of the calculation could also strongly influence the instability of the EC system. Furthermore, the effect of residual conductivity on the transition sequences of the EC system is investigated. Four different transition sequences for EC develop from the hydrostatic state to chaos as T increases, and three distinct transition routes from the chaotic state to the motionless state when T reduces are observed and discussed.

Abstract:Realistic boundaries of finite heat conductivity Realistic boundaries of finite heat conductivity for thermoconvection in a Rayleigh-B\'enard setup with magnetized ferrofluids are investigated. A linear stability analysis of the conductive state is performed with a shooting method. It shows that the critical wave number is for any magnetic field stronly influenced by the conductivity of the boundaries. Linear as well as nonlinear coefficients of a Ginzburg Landau amplitude equation for convection shortly above the onset are evaluated as functions of the magnetic Rayleigh number, the boundary conductivities, and the fluid Prandtl number.

Abstract:Based on a microscopic system reservoir model,where the associated bath is not in thermal equilibrium, we simulate the nonstationary Langevin dynamics and obtained the generalized nonstationary fluctuation dissipation relation (FDR) which asymptotically reduces to the traditional form. Our Langevin dynamics incorporates non-Markovian process also, the origin of which lies on the decaying term of the nonstationary FDR. We then follow the stochastic dynamics of the Langevin particle based on the Fokker-Planck-Smoluchowski description, in ratchet potential to obtain the steady and time dependent current in an analytic form. We also examine the influence of initial excitation and subsequent relaxation of bath modes on the transport of the Langevin particle to show that the nonequilibrium nature of the bath leads to both strong non-exponential dynamics as well as nonstationary current.

Abstract:We discuss the mechanism of electrokinetic regularization of the shortwave catastrophe in electrodeposition. Without suitable regularizations, both morphological and nonequilibrium electroosmotic instabilities occurring in electrodeposition are singular for shortwave perturbations in the following sense. In morphological instability the infinitesimal wavelength perturbation grows the fastest. In the electroosmotic instability in terms of the local electroneutrality approximation, the quiescent state is least stable for infinitesimal wavelength perturbations. Regularization of electroosmotic instability requires considering the finite width of the electric double layer. It was recently shown that in electrodeposition too, taking into account the finite width of the electric double layer combined with the finite electrode reaction rate constant, yields selection of a finite critical perturbation wavelength for instability, thus providing a regularization mechanism alternative to surface tension. We discuss the physical mechanism of this length selection, along with the effect exerted by the nonequilibrium electroosmotic flow which emerges in the limiting-overlimiting current regime. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.9.053701 ©2024 American Physical Society

Global Regularity for Nernst-Planck-Navier-Stokes Systems with Mixed Boundary Conditions

Abstract:We consider electrodiffusion of ions in fluids, described by the Nernst-Planck-Navier-Stokes system, in three dimensional bounded domains, with mixed blocking (no-flux) and selective (Dirichlet) boundary conditions for the ionic concentrations and Robin boundary conditions for the electric potential, representing the presence of an electrical double layer. We prove global existence of strong solutions for large initial data in the case of two oppositely charged ionic species. The result hold unconditionally in the case where fluid flow is described by the Stokes equations. In the case of Navier-Stokes coupling, the result holds conditionally on Navier-Stokes regularity. We use a simplified argument to also establish global regularity for the case of purely blocking boundary conditions for the ionic concentrations for two oppositely charged ionic species and also for more than two species if the diffusivities are equal and the magnitudes of the valences are also equal.

Abstract:Turbulence in the ionic migration and in the microfluidic electro-hydrodynamic convection (mixing) under constant and low-frequency external electric field has been studied using distributed chaos approach and notion of effective (turbulent) diffusivity. Results of corresponding laboratory experiments have been also used for this purpose. It is shown that for the migration and convection (mixing) under constant and low-frequency external electric field the turbulent power spectra have stretched exponential form $E(k) \propto \exp-(k/k_{\beta})^{2/3}$. In the case of the microfluidic convection the distributed chaos is tuned to the large-scale coherent structures generated by the low-frequency oscillating external electric field ( $k_{\beta}$ is proportional to the forcing frequency).

Abstract:We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of line liquids as realized in the nonlinear motion of flux lines of a superconductor driven by an applied electric current. Our analysis suggests a transition in the dynamics of the lines from a smooth, laminar phase at small driving forces, to a rough, turbulent phase when the drive is increased. We explore the nature of these phases and describe interesting analogies to driven diffusion and growing interfaces.
