Abstract:This paper makes an appraisal of the sexual discrimination in wage earnings of urban workers in China by drawing on the data from the 2002 urban residents census and the Blinder-Oaxaca wage differential analytical method.The findings from the appraisal:Of the difference in wage earnings between men and women,54.4 percent should be imputed to effects of difference in individual characteristics and 45.6 percent to effects of sexual discrimination.

Abstract:The present study used a Truth Value Judgment Task to investigate whether changes in sentence structure lead to corresponding changes in the assignment of scope relations by Mandarin-speaking children and adults. In one condition, participants were presented with ordinary negative sentences containing disjunction; this condition was designed to verify the existing claim that disjunction is a positive polarity item for adult speakers of Mandarin, but not for child speakers. In a second condition, participants were presented with negative sentences where the disjunction phrase was preposed from object position; this condition was designed to examine the extent to which changes in sentence structure can result in changes in scope assignments to negated disjunctions. The results indicate that the preposed disjunction phrase undergoes reconstruction for children, whereas reconstruction is blocked for adults. This finding also suggests that Mandarin-speaking children and adults exhibit different scope preferences for negated disjunctions, regardless of where the disjunction phrase appears in the surface syntax.

Abstract:Discourse does not only refer to the words and concepts being expressed,but also denotes the practices of ideology.Sexism discourse reflects the ideas and attitudes which stray away from objective facts and is a part of gender ideology.These ideas and attitudes are intimately related to social culture and are the mirror of inequality of social status between men and women.What the female suffers is the male-centered discourse oppression.The profound reason for this oppression is the male's possession of discourse right,which is also the symbol of economy,politics,law and social structures.Sexism discourse is generated in the patriarchal cultural contexts in which the male dominates and disciplines the discourse,creating signs as well as female signs.Women in such context and discourse are put in disadvantageous positions,defined by men,stipulated by men,depreciated by men and become men's vassals.Divergent gender ideologies are embedded in different cultural,historical,political,economic and social backgrounds.We should analyze and make research on the representation of sexism discourse in combination with expansive social and cultural backgrounds in a global context.Only by sorting out traditional gender discourse can we reconstruct a gender discourse based on the equality between male and female.

Abstract:Author(s): Schnell, Eric; Xu, Yang | Abstract: A fundamental goal in cognitive and historical linguistic research on semantic change is to characterize the regularity in how word meanings change over time. We examine a common belief that has not yet been evaluated comprehensively, which asserts that gender of a word influences its direction of semantic change. By this account, female terms like mistress should undergo pejorative change in meaning systematically more so than male terms like master. We evaluate this claim in gender-marked word pairs in English and French respectively as languages without and with grammatical gender. Our results provide supporting evidence for gender asymmetry in semantic change of English words but not French words. Our study raises questions about the generality of the claim about gender asymmetry in semantic change and provides a scalable computational framework for understanding the social roots of word meaning change.

Abstract:In the early 1990's,the Theory of "Markedness" was introduced to China and has been utilized more frequently to research on Chinese grammar.Two concepts should be differentiated from each other clearly when this theory is employed: the "markedness" does not mean "asymmetrical phenomena".The main difference is that "markedness" requires an element which occupies a dominant position in frequency of utilization and distribution of syntax."markedness" is also different from "pro forma mark",the former is a phenomenon while the latter is a concrete word or structure.

Abstract:The most concerned question is the sexual difference in the narration of fiction.A new methodology is practiced in the essay,which is the dual research supported by the narrative theory and gender study.There are three aspects analyzed based on the two short stories.One is accomplished by a female writer and the other is by a male novelist.The sexual difference shows different sexual consciousness in the composing,and the different description about the sex in the plots expresses different attitude and imagination.Finally,the style difference,which exists in the very endings,could be summed up for the many effects caused by the sexual difference.

Abstract:This study explores the differences in work commitment between Chinese male and female employees. We develop a model that specifies the major antecedents of job and organizational commitment in the Chinese workplace. We then examine whether the gender differences can be attributed to factors related to gender role ideology or unfavorable work conditions encountered by women. Several hypotheses are formulated and tested with a data set collected from 582 employees in Beijing. The findings reveal that employee work commitment is related to organizational support, job characteristics, and perceptions of gender discrimination. Further, it is found that the level of job commitment of women is lower than that of men, whereas the level of organizational commitment is the same for both sexes. The lower level of job commitment of women is due largely to their stronger perception of gender discrimination, receiving less challenging job assignments, and engaging in a low level of leader–member exchange. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.
Construction of Gender Identity in English Advertisements

Abstract:Through the analysis of the lexicogrammatical level from a functional perspective, this paper explores the construction process of gender identity in English advertisements. It is found that the advertising text tends to emphasize the subjectivity and creativity when aimed at male consumers, but focus on the psychological process and objectivity when aimed at female consumers. The study also reveals that functional analysis is an effective approach to gender language study.

Abstract:Based on diachronic analysis of the debate on the relation between grammatical gender and natural physical sex,as well as dis-cussions on the motivation for grammatical gender assignment,this study interprets a gender marker asymmetrical phenomenon of personal nouns in German language structure and usage from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. During the process of conceptualization,grammat-ical genders of the nouns are endowed with metaphorical meaning of sex. Besides,people map the value experience of"male is superior to fe-male"into the grammar system and form a"masculine superiority belief"in the grammatical category of nouns. This conceptual structure, which is preserved in the cognition,influences our perception,understanding and use of grammatical gender.

Abstract:The ad culture has distinctive gender attributes,therefore both sexes are subjected to the play of the ad culture.Accepting ad information and carrying out consumption thereby,be-comes,in reality sort ofgender trainingand the gender show,which,by and large,is far from being objective,can ony distort people's gender consciousness.The defamation of women by the ad culture is manifested in the negation of women's subject status and independence and the ma-terialization of women's image in ads.The image of women set up by ads is liable to become experience of a given region or organization,ultimately to give shape to a stereotyped social character.For this reason,women must maintain the consciousness of independence,face the cul-tural framework causing gender differences,analyse the rules making for the control of the ad culture by the male-authority ideology,and expose the gender misconception.Only by so doing is it possible to topple the unbalanced power structure between men and women set up by the ad culture,help women to free from the shackles of a male-authoirty society,and attain diverse pos-sibilities for gender structure and gender traits.

Abstract:In the paper, the level effect in China bond markets is tested by STAR - ARCH model and ECARCH. It is found that the bond price fluctuation in SSE bond markets shows its asymmetry obviously, but the inter - bank bond market is symmetry. In the end,the paper suggests that the authority should pay attention to this phenomenon when making macro policies.

Abstract:Language is one of the most powerful means through which sexism and gender discrimination are perpetrated and reproduced. The content of gender stereotypes, according to which women should display communal/warmth traits and men should display agentic/competence traits, is reflected in the lexical choices of everyday communication. As a consequence, language subtly reproduces the societal asymmetries of status and power in favor of men, which are attached to the corresponding social roles. Moreover, the hidden yet consensual norm according to which the prototypical human being is male is embedded in the structure of many languages. Grammatical and syntactical rules are built in a way that feminine terms usually derive from the corresponding masculine form. Similarly, masculine nouns and pronouns are often used with a generic function to refer to both men and women. However, such linguistic forms have the negative effects of making women disappear in mental representations. Although the use of gender-fair linguistic expressions can effectively prevent these negative consequences and promote gender equality, there are even more implicit forms of gender bias in language that are difficult to suppress. By choosing terms at different levels of abstraction, people can affect the attributions of the receiver in a way that is consistent with their stereotypical beliefs. Linguistic abstraction, thus, is a very subtle resource used to represent women in a less favorable way and thus to enact gender discrimination without meaning to discriminate or even be aware that this linguistic behavior has discriminatory results. In order to reduce gender bias, it is necessary to change people’s linguistic habits by making them aware of the beneficial effects of gender-fair expressions.

Abstract:The study of language and gender, especially the study of gender language differences involves many fields such as psychology, sociology, anthropology, language and literature, news media, education, and so on. Starting from the broad definition of gender language, this paper composes and reviews the research history of domestic gender language and its differences. Around the research history of domestic gender language, the research period is divided according to the timeline into germination, genesis, and growth. Divided by theme and content, the main content is the phenomenon of sexism in language; the second is the study of gender language style differences; the third is the root causes of sexism and verbal gender differences, i.e., the construction of the corresponding theories; and the fourth is the discussion of the limitations of the study of gender language in foreign countries.
