Abstract:Abstract Background HIV-1 CRF01_AE is becoming the predominant HIV-1 subtype among patients in China.The distribution and molecular epidemiologic characteristics of transmission clusters of HIV-1 CRF01_AE in Zhejiang,China remains unclear.This study analyzed the molecular epidemiologic characteristics and transmission clusters of HIV-1 CRF01_AE in Zhejiang. Methods Plasma samples obtained from 152 patients with HIV-1 CRF01_AE infection not undergoing ART were used to amplify HIV-1 pol and env. CRF01_AE drug resistance mutations (DRM) prevalence was analysed using Stanford University’s HIV Drug Resistance Database. A phylogenetic tree was constructed using FastTree (version 2.1.11) based on the GTR nucleotide substitution model and visualized using Figtree (version 1.4.4) and The Interactive Tree of Life; the Chinese HIV Gene Sequence Data Platform was used to construct genetic transmission networks. Result Most samples could be grouped into CRF01_AE transmission Clusters 1 (11.18%), 4 (64.5%), and 5 (7.24%). The CD4 + T-cell counts associated with Clusters 1, 4a, 4b, and 5 were 15, 38, 30, and 248 cells/mm3, respectively ( P < 0.05). DRM rates in Clusters 4a and 4b were 25.45% and 17.65%, respectively (P < 0.05), whereas they were 17.65% and 18.18% in Clusters 1 and 5, respectively. The high X4 tropism rates were 13.2%, 11.8%, 20%, and 0% in Clusters 1, 4a, 4b, and 5, respectively. In total, 24 transmission genetic networks, comprising 72 sequences and 61 links, were discovered; of them, 61.2%, 11.7%, and 18.2% were from Clusters 4, 1, and 5, respectively (P < 0.05). Conclusions In Zhejiang, different CRF01_AE clusters exhibited disease progression and outcome differences. The surveillance of molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 should be enhanced to improve prognosis of the disease and minimize its transmission.
Molecular Epidemiological Study on HIV/AIDS under the Follow-Up Program in Zhejiang Province in 2009

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To analyze the molecular epidemiological characteristics on HIV infectors/AIDS patients (HIV/AIDS) under a follow-up program in Zhejiang province in 2009.METHODS:303 cases were randomly sampled. Information on the cases was collected and followed by genomic DNA extraction. Gag gene fragments were amplified by nested PCR, followed by sequencing and bio-informatic analysis.RESULTS:The rate of success for sequence acquisition was 74.3% (225/303). Distributions of HIV subtypes were as follows: CRF01_AE (58.7%), CRF07_BC (13.8%), CRF08_BC (9.8%), B' (15.1%), C (1.8%), G (0.4%) and unassigned BC (unique recombinant form 0.4%).RESULTS:from the HIV BLAST analysis showed that the sources of strains with the highest homology involved in 10 provinces/municipalities (Liaoning, Guangxi, Yunnan, Henan, etc.) and five other countries (Thailand, Vietnam, India, South Africa and Libya). The CRF01_AE phylogenetic tree was divided into four clusters. The sequences of HIV/AIDS with homosexual transmission showed a gather in cluster 1, and mix with those infected through heterosexual contact.CONCLUSION:Circulating recombinant forms of HIV seemed to play a dominant role in Zhejiang province. Unique recombinant form and new subtype of HIV were found. People living with HIV under homosexual transmission and heterosexual transmission had a trend of interwoven with each other. Increase of both the diversity and complexity of HIV strains were also noticed in Zhejiang province.
Highlighting the Crucial Role of Hangzhou in HIV-1 Transmission among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Zhejiang, China.

Abstract:In recent years, the population of men who have sex with men (MSM) constitute a major group for HIV transmission in China. A total of 340 newly reported HIV-infected MSM were recruited proportionally from ten prefectures across Zhejiang province between January and December in 2013. Partial pol gene was amplified and sequenced. Phylogenetic relationship, transmission network and genotypic drug resistance analyses were performed on 311 sequences. HIV-1 subtypes including CRF01_AE (55.9%), CRF07_BC (37.6%), subtype B (1.9%), CRF55_01B (1.3%), CRF68_01B (0.3%), CRF08_BC (0.3%) and URFs (2.6%) were identified. A higher proportion of CRF07_BC and other subtypes existed in the >35 years group, while a higher proportion of CRF01_AE was present in the young group (<35 years). Low prevalence of transmitted drug resistance was found (3.9%, 12/311). Strains with Hangzhou imprints were diffused across the full phylogenetic tree. Moreover, Hangzhou represented the dominant proportion of local HIV transmission (72.0%) and cross-regional transmission (62.4%) based on the provincial transmission network and possessed the largest number of nodes with ≥50 edges, accounting for 50.0% (10/20). The complexity of HIV subtypes and an intertwined network was noticed in MSM in Zhejiang province. Hangzhou likely plays a central regional role in the intra-provincial spread of HIV.
Protection and remote control equipment in medium-voltage stations

Abstract:The use of protection and remote control devices in medium-voltage stations as a measure to increase supply reliability is rarely considered in Germany. Falling prices for digital control and protection devices as well as for communication technology enhance the economic competitiveness of these measures against conventional grid structure expansion. Starting in 2012, in Germany a quality regulation provides grid operators an economic incentive to obtain a preferably optimal level of supply reliability. This could make investments in protection and remote control devices more interesting. While many existing computer-based methods approach the optimization of grid structure in the medium-voltage level, equipping medium-voltage stations with additional protection and remote control devices is rarely considered. It is the purpose of this paper to present a new computer-based method that optimizes the use of protection and remote control devices in medium-voltage stations. The developed method performs an optimization based on a genetic algorithm and is applicable to all typical medium-voltage grid structures. Evaluation criteria are the additional revenue granted by the quality regulation due to increased supply reliability and expansion costs for protection and remote control devices. A case study illustrates the capability of the developed method with a rural medium-voltage grid.
[Characteristics of subtypes and transmission of HIV-1 infected persons among student MSM in Zhejiang province, 2013-2015]

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the characteristics of subtype diversity and transmission on HIV-1 among 12 to 30 years old student MSM in Zhejiang province. Methods: A total of 290 newly diagnosed HIV infected student MSM were selected as the research objects for molecular studies on HIV, in Zhejiang province during 2013 to 2015. Data on epidemiology and plasma samples of these people were collected. HIV-1 nucleotide sequences of pol gene regions were amplified using the RT-PCR/nested PCR method and sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis was performed to determine the HIV-1 genotypes. Characteristics of transmission mode among these cases were also analyzed. Results: A total of 290 cases, 50.3% were diagnosed in Hangzhou and 81.0% had college or above degrees. 178 sequences including 10 subtypes, were obtained, with the main subtypes as CRF01_AE (49.4%, 88/178) and CRF07_BC (39.3%, 70/178). A total of 18 molecular transmission clusters were formed (42 cases, cluster size from 2 to 4), with the proportions of clusters as 23.6% (42/178). 61.9% (26/42) of student MSM with their schools located in the same district within the transmission clusters. Their sexual partners would include both student MSM and non-student MSM. The proportion of clusters among middle school students was 38.2% (13/34), higher than that of college students (20.1%, 29/144) ( χ(2)=4.996, P<0.05). Conclusions: The HIV-1 subtypes of student MSM in Zhejiang province appeared diversity, which indicated with the diversity of sources of infection. The geographical distribution of cluster cases is relatively centralized. In order to effectively control the spread of AIDS, more attention should be paid to the sexual partners involved and to specific programs on intervention.

Genetic Diversity of Hiv-1 and Transmitted Drug Resistance among Newly Diagnosed Individuals with Hiv Infection in Hangzhou, China

Abstract:HIV transmitted drug resistance (TDR) can compromise antiretroviral therapy (ART) in resource-limited countries like China where ART has been scaled up and thus leads to an important public health concern. The aim of the study was to elucidate the HIV-1 genetic characteristics and TDR in Hangzhou, China. Two-hundred eleven ART-naive, newly diagnosed individuals were enrolled during January and August 2013. Specimens were classified as recent or chronic infections using the BED capture enzyme immunoassay (BED-CEIA). The pol fragment covering the entire protease and the first 300 codons of the reverse transcriptase gene was amplified by RT-PCR and nested PCR. Genotypic drug resistance (DR) and phylogenetic analysis were performed on the 200 obtained sequences. Multiple genotypes were identified, including CRF01_AE (62.0%), CRF07_BC (31.0%), subtype B (2.0%), CRF08_BC (1.5%), CRF55_01B (1.0%), CRF18_cpx (0.5%), and unique recombinant forms (URFs, 2.0%). All the four URFs were found in men who have sex with men, consisting of a recombination of CRF01_AE with subtype B or CRF07_BC. The prevalence of primary DR in newly diagnosed individuals in Hangzhou was low (4.0%). The proportion of DR mutation to protease inhibitors (PIs), nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) was 1.5%, 1.5%, and 1.0%, respectively. BED-CEIA revealed that 21.8% (45/211) of the specimens were associated with recent infections. The prevalence of TDR in recent infections was moderate (6.5%). High HIV diversity and relatively high prevalence of TDR in new infections has been found in Hangzhou, indicating an increasing challenge for future HIV prevention and treatment. J. Med. Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To survey the prevalence of drug resistant HIV in Zhejiang province in 2009-2011.METHODS:WHO truncated sequential sampling technique was adopted annually by using 63, 62 and 57 samples of newly diagnosed as HIV positive and aged 16-25 years in Hangzhou, Ningbo and Wenzhou from 2009 to 2011, respectively. RNA was prepared and HIV pol region was amplified by RT-PCR and nested PCR. Pol genetic mutation associated with drug resistance was analyzed.RESULTS:The success rates for sequence acquisition of the survey were 82.5% (52/63), 95.2% (59/62) and 94.7% (54/57) from year 2009 to 2011, respectively, and the main subtype was CRF01_AE (68.5% (37/54)-71.2% (37/52)). A total of 4 surveillance drug-resistance mutation (SDRMs), 2 SDRMs and 2 SDRMs were found by analyzing the 47 sequences each year, sampled from year 2009 to 2010, respectively, indicating that the prevalence of drug resistant HIV stains was moderate in 2009, and low for the next two years (2010-2011). A total of 8 individuals with drug resistant HIV stains found in this study were all infected by sexual transmission, especially in homosexual transmission (6 cases), and the main subtype was CRF01_AE (7 cases). SDRMs for protease inhibitor (PI), nucleotide HIV-reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) and non-NRTI (NNRTI) (L90M, T215S and Y188L) were all found in one case.CONCLUSION:The prevalence of drug resistant HIV stains in major areas with AIDS epidemic in Zhejiang province was low in 2009-2011.

Abstract:Objective To understand the basic characteristics and HIV-1 subtype distribution among newly-diagnosed HIV infected individuals in Taizhou in 2011. Methods Blood samples were collected from 140 newly-diagnosed HIV infected individuals who received no antiviral therapy. RNAs were extracted and part of the pol gene which encoded the whole viral enzymes protease and part of reverse transcriptase was amplified with RT-PCR. HIV-Blast was used to confirm the subtypes of HIV-1. Results The male to female ratio of HIV infected persons was 3. 24 ∶ 1. Up to 92. 86% of HIV infections occurred through sexual contact,and 3. 57% were through injecting drug use. Subtypes of CRF01_AE,CRF07_ BC,CRF08_ BC,B and C were detected,Totally 57. 14% of the infections through sexual transmission were caused by subtype CRF01_AE and most infections through injecting drug use were caused by subtype C. Conclusion Sexual contact was the major HIV transmission route in Taizhou. The diversity of HIV-1 gene was observed. CRF01_ AE was common in sexual transmitted infections and CRF07_ BC was common in the infections through injecting drug use.

Abstract:Dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLPS) is traditionally defined as a non‐lipogenic high‐grade sarcoma arising from a well‐differentiated liposarcoma that confers metastatic potential. Recently, DDLPSs with lipoblastic differentiation, i.e. morphologically lipogenic DDLPSs, were reported. Because of the lipoblastic differentiation, these tumours caused confusion, and were reported under different names. However, cytogenetic and molecular studies have revealed their DDLPS nature. So far, the cases reported have been high‐grade pleomorphic liposarcoma‐like tumours. In this study we have collected another series that contains low‐grade tumours, and expand the histological spectrum.

Abstract:Purpose This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive molecular epidemiology study of major HIV-1 subtypes in developed Eastern China (Zhejiang Province). Methods Plasma samples and epidemiological information were collected from 4180 newly diagnosed HIV-1 positive patients in Zhejiang Province in 2021. Pol sequences were obtained to determine the subtypes via multiple analytical tools. HIV-1 molecular networks were constructed on the basis of genetic distances to analyze transmission patterns among major subtypes. Furthermore, the birth-death skyline (BDSKY) model was utilized to estimate the transmission risks associated with large clusters (LCs). Results In 4180 patients, 3699 (88.49%) pol sequences were successfully obtained and classified into four subtype groups. In the networks under an optimal genetic distance of 0.01 substitutions/site, the majority of links (74.52%, 1383/1856) involved individuals within the same city, highlighting the predominant role of local transmission in driving the HIV-1 epidemic. In the CRF07_BC, CRF01_AE, and others/URFs networks, men who have sex with men (MSM) were the primary sexual transmission population, with the younger MSM group (< 30 years old) exhibiting higher linkage frequencies. Within the CRF08_BC network, 93.98% of individuals were infected primarily through heterosexual contact and had a significantly greater risk of localized clustering than other subtypes did. Moreover, fifteen identified LCs were predominantly transmitted through commercial heterosexual contact (CHC), exhibiting localized clustering and high potential for sustained diffusion. Conclusions Overall, our findings reveal a diverse and heterogeneous distribution of HIV-1 subtypes in Zhejiang Province, with noticeable variations in hotspots across different geographic areas and populations.

[Molecular characteristics of HIV-1 CRF01_AE strains in Zhejiang province in 2009]

Abstract:Objective: To analyze the molecular epidemiological characteristics of HIV-1 subtype CRF01_AE strains being prevailed among HIV/AIDS in Zhejiang province in 2009. Methods: A total of 303 subjects were identified by stratified random sampling among HIV infected individuals in Zhejiang province in 2009. Gag fragments of the HIV-1 strains were amplified by nested polymerase chain reaction from the DNA extracted from whole blood of HIV-1 infected individuals. PCR products were sequenced and analyzed by phylogenetic method. Results: A total of 132 HIV-1 subtype CRF01_AE sequences were identified from the 225 samples that sequenced successfully, accounting for 58.67% (132/225). A total of 90.91% (120/132) CRF01_AE strains infected HIV/AIDS were transmitted mainly by sexual contacts. A total of 65.91% (87/132) of the cases infected by heterosexual route and 25.00% (33/132) by homosexual route. There were three main clusters in the phylogenetic tree. Pairwise DNA distance within three groups was 0.037 ± 0.011, 0.034 ± 0.008 and 0.047 ± 0.010, which has statistical significance (P < 0.05). Distribution of the sequence of homosexual behavior infected individuals was relatively concentrated in clusters one (96.97%, 32/33), and crossed with heterosexual behavior infectors, and presented the close relations with strains from Jiangsu province, Zhengzhou of Henan province, Liaoning province, Shijiazhuang of Hebei province. Conclusion: The CRF01_AE strains were the dominant subtypes among HIV infected individuals. The majority of the CRF01_AE infected cases had high risk sexual behavior. The heterosexual infected cases were more than homosexual cases. The circulating status of CRF01_AE strains in homosexual population was relatively independent, but also had evidence of transmission from man who have sex with man to heterosexual population.
Nationwide Trends in Molecular Epidemiology of HIV-1 in China

Abstract:To estimate the nationwide and regional distribution of HIV-1 genotypes in China in the past three decades, province-specific HIV-1 molecular epidemiology data were derived from 260 independent studies of HIV molecular prevalence through searching PubMed, VIP Chinese Journal Database (VIP), China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang Data from January 1981 to December 2015. The nationwide and regional distribution of HIV-1 genotypes was estimated by weighting the genotype distribution from each province- and risk-specific subpopulation with the number of reported cases in the corresponding subgroups in the relevant periods. A sharp transition of HIV-1 subtypes and recombinant distribution was observed in various risk groups and regions over time. CRF01_AE has rapidly surged among almost all risk groups and in all areas, and it has become dominant among men who have sex with men and heterosexuals. A wide variety of new circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) and unique recombinant forms (URFs) were rapidly appearing in several risk groups and regions. After 2007, CRF01_AE was the most prevalent strain, accounting for 42.5% of all national infections, followed by CRF07_BC (28.9%), subtype B'/B (10.9%), CRF08_BC (10.0%), and subtype C (2.8%). URFs and other CRFs were responsible for 2.6% and fewer than 1% of infections nationwide, respectively. The nationwide and regional distributions of HIV-1 subtypes and recombinants were sharply shifting in China. CRF01_AE and new CRFs played an increasing role in the nationwide or regional HIV pandemic. The nationwide diversity of HIV-1 poses a formidable challenge to HIV vaccine development and disease prevention.
[Molecular characteristics of HIV-1 CRF01 _ AE strains in Zhejiang province]

Abstract:Objective: Using molecular epidemiology method to characterize human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) subtype CRF01 _ AE strains being prevailed in Zhejiang province. Methods: Gag fragments of the HIV-1 strains were amplified by nested-polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) from the DNA extracted from whole blood of HIV-1 infected individuals in Zhejiang province. PCR products were sequenced and analyzed by phylogenetic method. Results: 81 HIV-1 subtype CRF01 _ AE sequences were identified from the 192 samples that sequenced successfully. As one of the dominant subtypes in Zhejiang, CRF01 _ AE was transmitted mainly by heterosexual or homosexual contact in local residents. In migrants living in Zhejiang, CRF01 _ AE were transmitted mainly by heterosexual contact or injecting drug use. There were three main clusters in the phylogenetic tree which bootstrap value was larger than 60. We named the clusters with group MIX (47 sequences), group SEX (7 sequences) and group MSM (12 sequences) based on the transmission. Pairwise DNA distances in the gag region within the three groups and between CM240 were different (P = 0.000). Data through the analyses of deduced amino acid sequences from the three groups showed that several signature amino acid sites were distinct from the same positions of the subtype reference strains. Conclusion: The CRF01 _ AE strain prevailing in Zhejiang province was from several sources, transmitted by more than three different transmission routes, and becoming the main subtypes circulating in homosexual population in this study. More attention needs to be paid to the epidemic characteristic of CRF01 _ AE.

Abstract:Results of a clinicopathologic study of seven cases of a previously unreported disease of minor salivary gland are presented. Necrotizing sialometaplasia is a disease of adults with four of seven patients being in the sixth decade of life. In every case, this benign inflammatory process involved only the tissues covering the hard palate, and, in six instances, it was characterized by ulceration. Lobular necrosis and marked squamous metaplasia of salivary gland are consistent features. Microscopically, necrotizing sialometaplasia shows marked similarity to mucoepidermoid carcinoma, and criteria are presented to aid in distinguishing these two conditions. There have been no recurrences following local surgical excision. Etiologic factors remain obscure.
Genetic characterization of HIV-1 epidemic in Anhui Province, China

Abstract:Background: Anhui Province in China is facing a severe HIV epidemic with an increasing number of newly diagnosed cases. Methods: In this study, HIV genetic characteristics in the province were investigated. Newly reported HIV-positive individuals from 15 districts of Anhui Province were enrolled and interviewed. Total viral RNA was extracted from plasma isolated from blood samples. We amplified and sequenced an HIV pol fragment of the 1062 bp. The sequences were used for determination of HIV subtypes and the presence of drug resistance mutations. Transmission networks were constructed to explore possible relationships. And all of assembled partial pol genes were submitted to the Stanford HIV Drug Resistance Database website to find the transmitted drug resistance. Results: Partial pol gene sequences were obtained from 486 cases. The results showed that MSM was the most dominant transmission route (253, 52.06%), followed by heterosexual transmission (210, 43.21%) and blood-borne transmission (1, 0.21%). Many subtypes were identified, including CRF01_AE (226, 46.50%), CRF07_BC (151, 31.07%), subtype B (28, 5.76%), CRF08_BC (20, 4.12%), CRF55_01B (15, 3.09%), CRF68_01B (7, 1.44%), CRF67_01B (3, 0.62%), CRF57_BC (2, 0.41%), CRF59_01B (2, 0.41%), CRF79_0107 (2, 0.41%), subtype C (2, 0.41%), CRF64_BC (1, 0.21%), and circulating recombinant forms (URFs) (27, 5.55%). Four transmission subnetworks containing high transmission risk individuals (with degree ≥4) were identified based on CRF01_AE and CRF07_BC sequences, including two CRF01_AE transmission subnetworks constituted by elderly people with average ages of 67.9 and 61.5 years. Infection occurred most likely through heterosexual transmission, while the other two CRF07_BC transmission subnetworks consist mainly of MSMs with average ages of 31.73 and 34.15. The level of HIV-transmitted drug resistance is 3.09%. Conclusions: The simultaneous spread of multiple HIV subtypes in Anhui province underscores that close surveillance of the local HIV epidemic is necessary. Furthermore, the elderly people were frequently involved, arguing for behaviour intervention in this specific population besides the MSM risk group.
Non-Isothermal Displacements with Step-Profile Time Dependent Injections in Homogeneous Porous Media

Abstract:Miscible non-isothermal flow displacements in homogeneous porous media are modeled and analyzed in flows that involve step-profile velocities that alternate between injection and extraction. The viscosity is assumed to vary with both the concentration and the temperature. The flow is governed by the continuity equation, Darcy's law and the convection-diffusion equations for the concentration and temperature with the assumption of thermal equilibrium. The problem is formulated and solved numerically using a combination of the highly accurate spectral- methods based on the Hartley's transform and the finite-difference technique. Non-linear simulations were carried for a variety of parameters to analyse the effects of the time-dependence of the injection velocity on both the solutal and the thermal front. It is found that for the same net flow rate, time-dependent injections affect not only the solutal front but also the thermal from which can become unstable under time-dependent scenarios when it is known to be stable for flows with a constant injection velocity. The results of this study will be used to improve our understanding of the coupling between heat and mass transfer in flows in porous media and to optimize a variety of non-isothermal flow displacements.
HIV-1 molecular epidemiology among newly diagnosed HIV-1 individuals in Hebei, a low HIV prevalence province in China

Abstract:New human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) diagnoses are increasing rapidly in Hebei. The aim of this study presents the most extensive HIV-1 molecular epidemiology investigation in Hebei province in China thus far. We have carried out the most extensive systematic cross-sectional study based on newly diagnosed HIV-1 positive individuals in 2013, and characterized the molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 based on full length gag-partial pol gene sequences in the whole of Hebei. Nine HIV-1 genotypes based on full length gag-partial pol gene sequence were identified among 610 newly diagnosed naïve individuals. The four main genotypes were circulating recombinant form (CRF)01_AE (53.4%), CRF07_BC (23.4%), subtype B (15.9%), and unique recombinant forms URFs (4.9%). Within 1 year, three new genotypes (subtype A1, CRF55_01B, CRF65_cpx), unknown before in Hebei, were first found among men who have sex with men (MSM). All nine genotypes were identified in the sexually contracted HIV-1 population. Among 30 URFs, six recombinant patterns were revealed, including CRF01_AE/BC (40.0%), CRF01_AE/B (23.3%), B/C (16.7%), CRF01_AE/C (13.3%), CRF01_AE/B/A2 (3.3%) and CRF01_AE/BC/A2 (3.3%), plus two potential CRFs. This study elucidated the complicated characteristics of HIV-1 molecular epidemiology in a low HIV-1 prevalence northern province of China and revealed the high level of HIV-1 genetic diversity. All nine HIV-1 genotypes circulating in Hebei have spread out of their initial risk groups into the general population through sexual contact, especially through MSM. This highlights the urgency of HIV prevention and control in China.

Abstract:Eye tracking was used to show that 18-month-old infants are sensitive to social context as a sign that others' actions are bound together as a collaborative sequence based on a joint goal. Infants observed five identical demonstrations in which Actor 1 moved a block to one location and Actor 2 moved the same block to a new location, creating a sequence of actions that could be considered either individual actions or collaboration. In the test phase, Actor 1 was alone and sitting so that she could reach both locations. The question was whether she would place a new block in the location she had previously (individual goal) or in the location that could be considered the goal of collaboration (joint goal). Importantly, in the Social condition, the actors were socially engaged with each other before and during the demonstration, while in the Non-Social condition, they were not. Results revealed that infants in the Social condition spontaneously anticipated Actor 1 placing her block in the joint goal location more often than those in the Non-Social condition. Thus, the social context seems to allow infants to bind actions into a collaborative sequence and anticipate joint rather than individual goals, giving insight into how actions are perceived using top-down processing early in life.
