Abstract:The Changjiang Estuary is a large-river estuary ecosystem in the East China Sea, and its plume, the Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW), transports a large mass of nutrients (NO3 + NO2, PO43, SiO32) to the shelf sea, leading to substantial eutrophication; the CDW also supports high primary production. However, relationships between nutrient delivery and phytoplankton responses have been difficult to establish, as many nutrient delivery events and algal blooms are episodic, and the CDW may expand or become detached with changing winds. To study the relationship between nutrient delivery events, algal blooms and estuarine metabolism dynamics, a buoy system was deployed in the CDW from 9 September to 10 October 2013, with measurements of chlorophyll a and dissolved nutrients. Day-to-day nutrient increases covaried with salinity decreases, regulated by both the spring-neap tidal cycle and wind events. Several specific nutrient injection periods were detected, each followed by nutrient drawdown and chlorophyll a accumulation (algal blooms). Each algal bloom had its own unique pattern of nutrient uptake based on change in nutrient ratios (Delta N:Delta P; Delta N:Delta Si) and appeared to be dominated by different algal groups. These events occurred under weak wind and stable hydrodynamic conditions. Ecosystem metabolism based on net community production (NCP) showed that the upper estuarine ecosystem was autotrophic when chlorophyll a accumulated, but heterotrophic when wind-induced mixing strengthened, and upwelling brought organic-rich water to the near surface. In spite of several short-lived algal blooms, the average NCPdaily was negative during the observation period, indicating a net source of CO2 to the atmosphere.

Abstract:Flood events significantly increase water discharges and terrigenous material inputs to coastal waters. Riverine nutrients in the Changjiang Estuary are transported by the dispersion of Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW) plumes and detached low-salinity water patches. However, the effects of flooding on nutrient offshore transports have not been well explored. Here, we present the nutrient conditions in the Changjiang Estuary and adjacent East China Sea in the historical flooding year 2020. Comparisons of nutrient distributions between flooding years, drought year and non-flooding years were also made. Our results showed that nitrate flux from the Changjiang River in August 2020 was 1.5 times that of the multi-year averaged flux in non-flooding years. Enormous riverine nutrient input resulted in much higher nutrient concentrations in the outer estuary than those in non-flooding years. In addition, a detached low-salinity water patch was observed, which made the salinity of the northern estuary even lower than that in the historical flooding year 1998. Surface dissolved inorganic nitrate (DIN) level in the low-salinity water patch was even ~16 times of that at nearby station in the drought year 2006. While phosphate (PO43−) concentrations were less than 0.1 μmol L−1 east of 123°E, which was probably caused by intensive biological uptake, as indicated by a high Chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration (29.08 μg L−1). The depleted PO43− and high N/P of the low-salinity water patch suggested PO43− limitation even under flood conditions. A three end-member mixing model was adopted to identify the contributions of the CDW end-member (CDWend-member) and biological process to nutrient distributions. Our model results showed that the nutrient contribution of the CDWend-member to the estuary (122–124°E, 31–32.5°N) in flooding year 2020 was over double that in drought year 2006. Model-derived biological DIN uptake was as high as 24.65 μmol L−1 at the low-salinity water patch. Accordingly, the estimated net community production was 566–1131 mg C m−2 d−1 within the euphotic zone. The offshore transport of a low-salinity, high-DIN water patch during flooding could probably have a significant influence on biogeochemical cycles in the broad shelf, and even the adjacent Japan Sea.

Abstract:The spatial variations in nitrate(NO-3),nitrite(NO-2) and ammonium(NH+4) concentrations in the Changjiang Estuary and the adjacent East China Sea were described on the basis of the summer cruise in 2006.NO-3 concentrations decreased along a salinity gradient.Owing to the input of the sewage from Shanghai City NO-2 and NH-4 concentrations were very high(up to 8.64,19.81 μmol/dm3 respectively) in the Changjiang Estuaxy area and decreased seaward.Generally NO-3 and NH+4 concentrations were significantly correlated with salinity,with the coefficient(r2) of 0.815 and 0.255 respectively,suggesting that these two nutrients behaved nearly conservatively,while NO-2 did not behave conservatively(r2=0.074).Theoretical dilution line(TDL) was obtained by assuming river and ocean end-members.NO-3,NO-2 and NH+4 concentrations were above values expected for a conservative mixing relationship with salinity at the freshwater end member due to high nitrogen input from the sewage effluence,and in deep water at the oceanic stations because of the decomposition of the organic matter.In contrast,at the salinity plume with high dissolved oxygen(DO) concentrations,the surface NO-3 concentrations were below values expected for the conservative mixing by 1~19 mol/dm3,as a result of high primary production in the euphotic zone,where NO-2 and NH+4 concentrations were also negatively deviated to various extents.In waters with the highest turbidity in the Changjiang Estuary,NH+4 was removed due to the adsorption of suspended matter.Overall,NO-3,NO-2 and NH+4 concentrations at the surface at the oceanic stations deviated from the TDL to less extent,while their concentrations at the bottom were generally beyond values expected for the TDL because the organic matter from the photic zone decomposed and nutrients regenerated.
The Spatial and Seasonal Variability of Nutrient Status in the Seaward Rivers of China Shaped by the Human Activities

Abstract:Understanding the riverine nutrient status is of paramount importance to the management of coastal ecosystems. This study investigated the spatial and seasonal variability of nutrient status in the seaward rivers of China at a national scale, using the latest observational data (2020–2023). A total of 126 rivers were considered, covering nearly all rivers in China that enter adjacent seas. The average flux of total nitrogen (TN) to the sea amounts to about 8968 tons d-1, while the total phosphorus (TP) and ammonium (AN) flux are about 329 tons d-1 and 276 tons d-1, respectively. In general, the river nutrient fluxes are higher in summer, with the Southern China (SC) showing higher levels than the Northern China (NC). This pattern is largely regulated by the spatio-temporal characteristics of runoff. By contrast, the spatio-temporal pattern of riverine nutrient concentration differs from it slightly. Riverine TN/TP concentration typically shows higher levels in NC, peaking in winter/summer, while the spatio-temporal variations of AN are minimal. The coal-fired heating prevalent in NC during winter causes severe atmospheric nitrogen pollutions, contributing to the heightened TN concentration in local rivers. At the meantime, the vast cropland in NC creates a substantial demand for the phosphorus fertilizer, responsible for the elevated TP concentration in northern rivers. The seasonal variation of TP concentration is mainly driven by rainfall, which exacerbates the loss of phosphorus from croplands into nearby rivers, leading to a simultaneous increase in riverine TP and turbidity levels during summer. This process is particularly pronounced in NC, due to elevated phosphorus levels in croplands and more concentrated summer rainfall. The present study suggests the crucial role of human activities in shaping the riverine nutrient status in China, which will be of practical significance for the future environmental management.
Quantitative Identification of Riverine Nitrogen from Point, Direct Runoff and Base Flow Sources.

Abstract:We present a methodological example for quantifying the contributions of riverine total nitrogen (TN) from point, direct runoff and base flow sources by combining a recursive digital filter technique and statistical methods. First, we separated daily riverine flow into direct runoff and base flow using a recursive digital filter technique; then, a statistical model was established using daily simultaneous data for TN load, direct runoff rate, base flow rate, and temperature; and finally, the TN loading from direct runoff and base flow sources could be inversely estimated. As a case study, this approach was adopted to identify the TN source contributions in Changle River, eastern China. Results showed that, during 2005-2009, the total annual TN input to the river was 1,700.4 +/- 250.2 ton, and the contributions of point, direct runoff and base flow sources were 17.8 +/- 2.8%, 45.0 +/- 3.6%, and 37.2 +/- 3.9%, respectively. The innovation of the approach is that the nitrogen from direct runoff and base flow sources could be separately quantified. The approach is simple but detailed enough to take the major factors into account, providing an effective and reliable method for riverine nitrogen loading estimation and source apportionment.
Estimation and Allocation of Water Environmental Capacity in Nonpoint Source Polluted River

Abstract:Based on the investigation of the application and emission quantities (QAE) of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) for nonpoint sources in river catchment' s area, included fertilizer applications, livestock and living pollutants emissions, the quantities of TN and TP entered the river were computed by means of export coefficient model in Changle River, southeast China. Self-purification capacities of TN and TP in the reach were also estimated in terms of input-output balance analysis method. According to the provisions of water function planning in the river, the water environment residual capacity (WERC) or the demand for reducing the application and emission (DRAE) of nitrogen and phosphorus in the corresponding catchment were monthly estimated, and WERC and DRAE were respectively allocated among the pollution sources. Results indicated that about 28.8% of TN loads and 51.2% of TP loads could be self-purified respectively in the reach, i. e., purification of 775.9 t a(-1) for TN and 30.9 t a(-1) for TP. Seasonal variations of the self-purification for the pollutants not only resulted from riverine hydrological and ecological conditions, but also affected by the pollution loading. According to the demand of the water quality protection in the reach, about 1581.0 t a(-1) QAE of TN had to reduce in Changle catchment. The maximum demand for the reducing QAE of TN was the fertilizer application (1047.4 t a(-1)), and the highest ratio for the reducing QAE of TN was livestock-poultry breeding (32.4%). There was about 2335.7 t a(-1) WERC for TP in the reach. The largest DRAE of nitrogen was during mid-water season and the least WERC of TP was during higher-water season.
Nutrient Budgets for Large Chinese Estuaries

Abstract:Abstract. Chinese rivers deliver about 5–10% of global freshwater input and 15–20% of the global continental sediment to the world ocean. We report the riverine fluxes and concentrations of major nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicon) in the rivers of the contiguous landmass of China and Korea in the northeast Asia. The rivers are generally enriched with dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and depleted in dissolved inorganic phosphate (PO43−) with very high DIN: PO43− concentration ratios. DIN, phosphorus, and silicon levels and loads in rivers are mainly affected by agriculture activities and urbanization, anthropogenic activities and adsorption on particulates, and rock types, climate and physical denudation intensity, respectively. Nutrient transports by rivers in the summer are 3–4 times higher than those in the winter with the exception of NH4+. The flux of NH4+ is rather constant throughout the year due to the anthropogenic sources such as the sewer discharge. As nutrient composition has changed in the rivers, ecosystems in estuaries and coastal sea have also changed in recent decades. Among the changes, a shift of limiting nutrients from phosphorus to nitrogen for phytoplankton production with urbanization is noticeable and in some areas silicon becomes the limiting nutrient for diatom productivity. A simple steady-state mass-balance box model was employed to assess nutrient budgets in the estuaries. The major Chinese estuaries export <15% of nitrogen, <6% of phosphorus required for phytoplankton production and ~4% of silicon required for diatom growth in the Chinese Seas (Bohai, Yellow Sea, East China Sea, South China Sea). This suggests that land-derived nutrients are largely confined to the immediate estuaries, and ecosystem in the coastal sea beyond the estuaries is mainly supported by other nutrient sources such as regeneration, open ocean and atmospheric deposition.
Historic Changes in Nutrient Fluxes from the Yangtze River to the Sea: Recent Response to Catchment Regulation and Potential Linkage to Maritime Red Tides

Abstract:Riverine nutrient fluxes are of great implications for marine ecosystems. However, there is a lack of knowledge on the source-to-sink process of nutrient fluxes, particularly the total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN), in the Yangtze River and its adjacent sea. Thus, this study provides historic changes in riverine nutrient fluxes to the sea over the past similar to 70 years, and tries to figure out their response to catchment-related factors and potential ecological influence on the sea during the past two decades. It is found that the process of the nutrient flux to the sea over the past similar to 70 years can be divided into three stages as a low-level stage before 1980, a rapid developing stage after reform and opening-up, and a final stage under government regulation. Based on our detailed measurements in the recent two decades (2004-2020), the increasing trends of the riverine nutrient fluxes have slowed down, and the TP and TN fluxes averaged 0.09 +/- 0.02 and 1.61 +/- 0.23 mt/yr, respectively 12.2 % and 4.8 % smaller than the previous five-year (1999-2003) averages. The seasonal characteristics of the nutrient fluxes primarily reflected the controlling effect of the Yangtze River water discharge, and the overall interannual characteristics of the nutrient fluxes were related to the fertilizer use in the catchment. Over the past two decades, the annual frequency and area of red tides occurring in the East China Sea averaged similar to 38 red tides and 5120 km2, respectively. The major red tides (single area >100 km2) mainly occurred between March and September, and peaked in May (50.0 % and 57.9 % of the total frequency and area, respectively). The intensity of red tides had a relatively decent reaction to the nutrient fluxes in May, but also exhibited some uncertainties affected by some other important influencing factors. This study supplies a more continuous, accurate and detailed field-measured dataset of TP and TN fluxes from the Yangtze River to the ocean, and assists in exploring the potential linkage between the maritime red tides and riverine nutrient fluxes.
Nutrient Budgets for Large Chinese Estuaries and Embayment

Abstract:Abstract. Nutrient concentrations among the Chinese rivers and bays vary 10–75 fold depending on nutrient elements. The silicic acid levels in South China rivers are higher than those from North China rivers and the yields of dissolved silicate increased from the north to the south of China, indicating the effect of climate on weathering. The nutrient levels in Chinese rivers are higher than those from the large and less-disturbed world rivers such as Amazon and Zaire, but comparable to the values for European and North American polluted and eutrophic rivers like the Loire and Po. This may be ascribed to both of extensive leaching and influences from agricultural and domestic activities over the drainage basins of Chinese rivers. DIN:PO3−4 ratios in most of Chinese rivers and bays are higher (up to 2800) than the other rivers in the world. The atomic ratios of DIN to PO43− in the major Chinese rivers and embayment decrease in exponential trend with increase in the atomic ratios of PO43− to Si(OH)4, indicating that primary production in coastal environments changes with the nutrients transport when the urbanization develops to a certain extent, and the potential limited nutrient elements can be changed from phosphorus to nitrogen limitation, which can modify aquatic food webs and then the ocean ecosystem. A simple steady-state mass-balance box model was employed. The output shows that the estuaries and embayment behave as a sink or source of nutrients. For the major Chinese estuaries, both residual and mixing flow transport nutrients off the estuaries, and nutrient transport fluxes in summer is 3–4 fold that in winter except comparable for NH4+. These fluxes are 1.0–1.7 fold that estimated by timing riverine nutrient concentrations and freshwater discharge. For the major Chinese embayment, nutrient elements are transported to China Seas except PO43− and Si(OH)4 in Sanggou Bay and Jiaozhou Bay. Seasonally, nutrients transport fluxes off the bays in the summer are 2.2–7.0 fold that in the winter. In the embayment, the exchange flow dominated the water budgets, resulting in average system salinity approaching the China seas salinity where river discharge is limited. The major Chinese estuaries and embayment transport 1.0–3.1% of nitrogen, 0.2–0.5% of phosphorus and 3% of silicon necessary for phytoplankton growth for the China Seas. This demonstrates regenerated nutrients in water column and sediments and nutrients transport fluxes between the China Seas and open ocean play an important role for phytoplankton growth. Atmospheric deposition may be another important source of nutrients for the China Seas.

Abstract:A lower trophic level nutrient-phytoplankton-zooplankton model is coupled to the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) in the Changjiang River estuary and its adjacent sea area with the aim of simulating the seasonal variations of three main nutrients (nitrate, phosphate, and silicate). The coupled model successfully reproduces the long-term variations of nutrients during 2004-2007, and the simulated nutrient distributions are also well consistent with that obtained by cruises. Based on the climatological simulation, the seasonal variations of nutrients in the study area are analyzed. In winter, the spatial distributions of nitrate and silicate show that they are mainly from terrestrial input. As for phosphate, the concentration is relatively high, but it is difficult to distinguish the main source merely on its spatial distribution. In summer, as the Changjiang River diluted water (CDW) flows eastward or northeastward, a great amount of nutrients are transported to the sea area on the east of 123 degrees E via a thin layer in the surface. Despite all this, the available phosphate is still insufficient to meet the consumption by phytoplankton, which shows a strong phosphorus limitation in the surface. By contrast, the phosphate concentrations in lower layers are much higher, and they are mainly from two physical sources: one is the intrusion of the Taiwan Warm Current (TWC) from the south, and the other is a shoreward transport from the east. The spatial variations of N/P and N/Si ratios show that phosphate is the main limiting nutrient in the Changjiang River estuary and its adjacent sea area, although slight nitrogen limitation appears in the sea areas on the east of 122.5 degrees E in winter. It is allegedly related to specific personality characteristics and has been associated with unfavorable social outcome. We aimed to analyze psychosocial outcome in patients with JME. Abstract:Using the monthly hydrogeochemical data of ChangLe River system from 2004 to 2008, total nitrogen (TN) export load (S(n)) from nonpoint sources (NPS) to stream and in-stream attenuation load (A(L)) was estimated by the inverse and forward format of an existing in-stream nutrient transport equation, respectively. Estimated S(n) contributed 96 ± 2% of TN entering the river system, while A(L) reduced the input TN by 23 ± 14% in average. In-stream TN attenuation efficiency in high flow periods (10 ± 5% in average for the entire river system) was much lower than that in low flow periods (39 ± 17%). TN attenuation efficiency in tributaries (28 ± 16% in average) was much higher than that in mainstream (11 ± 8%). Hydrological conditions are important in determining the spatio-temporal distributions of NPS TN export, stream attenuation and discharge. Increasing the water residence time might be a practical method for mitigating stream TN.
Nutrient Loads Flowing into Coastal Waters from the Main Rivers of China (2006–2012)

Abstract:Based on monthly monitoring data of unfiltered water, the nutrient discharges of the eight main rivers flowing into the coastal waters of China were calculated from 2006 to 2012. In 2012, the total load of NH 3 -N (calculated in nitrogen), total nitrogen (TN, calculated in nitrogen) and total phosphorus (TP, calculated in phosphorus) was 5.1 × 10 5 , 3.1 × 10 6 and 2.8 × 10 5 tons, respectively, while in 2006, the nutrient load was 7.4 × 10 5 , 2.2 × 10 6 and 1.6 × 10 5 tons, respectively. The nutrient loading from the eight major rivers into the coastal waters peaked in summer and autumn, probably due to the large water discharge in the wet season. The Yangtze River was the largest riverine nutrient source for the coastal waters, contributing 48% of the NH 3 -N discharges, 66% of the TN discharges and 84% of the TP discharges of the eight major rivers in 2012. The East China Sea received the majority of the nutrient discharges, i.e. 50% of NH 3 -N (2.7 × 10 5 tons), 70% of TN (2.2 × 10 6 tons) and 87% of TP (2.5 × 10 5 tons) in 2012. The riverine discharge of TN into the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea was lower than that from the direct atmospheric deposition, while for the East China Sea, the riverine TN input was larger.

Abstract:The spatial and seasonal dynamics of total and size-fractionated phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll- a) as well as physical and chemical factors in the Yangtze River Estuary and adjacent East China Sea coastal waters were investigated from April 2002 to February 2003. Average surface total and water column integrated chlorophyll a biomass showed a clear seasonal variation in response to the Yangtze River discharge, with the highest in summer (∼4 mg m−3 and >60 mg m−2), intermediate in spring and autumn (∼1 mg m−3 and 26–28 mg m−2), and the lowest in winter (0.5 mg m−3 and <20 mg m−2). Summer maximum chlorophyll a concentrations (>10 mg m−3) occurred at intermediate salinities (∼20–30) region beyond the front zone between 112.5°E and 123°E with sufficient nutrients replenishment for phytoplankton growth. Generally, spatial distribution of size-fractionated phytoplankton showed that phytoplankton biomass was dominated by the large size fraction (>20 μm) in the turbid eutrophic estuarine and near-shore waters, while the small-sized phytoplankton (<5 μm) were dominant in the offshore stations. Phosphate was the main limiting nutrient of phytoplankton biomass in river diluted water and most near-shore stations, while dissolved inorganic nitrogen became the potential limiting nutrient in some offshore stations, except for summer when phosphate limited almost all in the whole investigation region. Controlling the inputs of phosphate loading from the Yangtze River is one of the most effective strategies for reducing the increasing eutrophication and occurrences of harmful algal blooms in Yangtze River Estuary and adjacent East China Sea coastal waters.
Long-Term Effects of Ecological Factors on Nonpoint Source Pollution in the Upper Reach of the Yangtze River

Abstract:Nowadays, nonpoint source pollution has been a dominant cause of water quality deterioration and eutrophication. For large basins, long-term effects of ecological factors on nonpoint source pollution are significant and have gained worldwide attention. Yangtze River is the largest river in China, and water environment protection of its upper reach is crucial to maintain the whole river health and the Three Gorges Project successful operation. The objective of this study is to reveal the effects of ecological factors on nonpoint source pollution in the upper reach of the Yangtze River during the period from 1960 through 2003 by the Improved Export Coefficient Model and the Nutrient Losses Empirical Model. The results indicated that during those decades the effects of ecological factors on dissolved pollutants were constant whereas those on sediment as well as absorbed pollutants changed slightly and decreased obviously after 2000. Comparing to anthropogenic factors, ecological ones had a dominant influence on sediment and absorbed pollutants. As for load intensities, long-term effects of ecological factors on dissolved pollutants hadn’t changed much, while those on sediment as well as absorbed pollutants was increasingly significant and then reached an ultimate in 1980. Atmospheric deposition, grassland as well as forest were important sources of dissolved nitrogen export, nevertheless, grassland and forest were the main export areas of dissolved phosphorus, sediment as well as absorbed pollutants. The study would facilitate the source identification and nonpoint source pollution control in the upper reach of the Yangtze River to improve water quality.

Abstract:The Yangtze is the largest river in Asia and its water composition reflects the activities of about 400 Mio people in its catchment. Its chemical loads have a large impact on the biogeochemistry of the East China Sea. We discuss and quantify the annual dynamics of major ions, nutrients, and trace elements from samples collected monthly at Datong Station from May 2009 to June 2010. The Yangtze today carries 192 × 106 tons of total dissolved solids annually to the East China Sea, which is an increase of 25% compared to the average of 1958–1990. While the loads of dissolved silica (SiO2), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), Ca2+ and Mg2+compared well with the long‐term averages since the 1950s, loads of Na+, Cl−, SO42−, have tripled since 1958–1990. The increase of SO42− is attributed to the burning of coal in the catchment, and 18% of the F− load is estimated to originate from this source. The increase of Na+ and Cl−loads may be anthropogenic as well. The load of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) has increased 15 fold since the early measurements around 1970 and amounts to 1.6 Mt‐N/yr today. The particulate concentrations of the typical anthropogenic trace metals Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn showed enrichment factors between 0.7 – 7 compared to the natural background. Their annual peak concentrations all exceeded the quality targets recommended by the EC up to two times. However, the load of trace elements at Datong decreased by 73–86% (As: 50%) in the past ten years.
Anthropogenic impacts on nutrient variability in the lower Yellow River

Abstract:<p>Excessive nutrient discharges and changes in nutrient ratios caused by global change and anthropogenic activities have been reported in global rivers; however, the actual alterations occurring in the Yellow River environment is too fast to catch up with. From 2001 to 2018, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and dissolved silicon (DSi) concentrations showed decreasing trends in the lower Yellow River throughout the study period. Dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) concentrations increased since 2009, reaching up to 95% of the total dissolved phosphorus. Annual minimum dissolved organic nitrogen concentrations increased with time. We observed extremely low nutrient concentration events since 2014 in response to the retention effect of large reservoirs; this significantly reduced the downstream water discharge and sediment load and increased phytoplankton uptake. To further analyze the variability of nutrient fluxes, we quantified the fluxes to the Yellow River from natural (runoff, precipitation deposition, and sediment load from the Loess Plateau), anthropogenic (recharged water, fertilizer application, and vegetation coverage), social and industrial (population urbanization, GDP, and sewage effluents) sources. The highest contributions of total nutrient fluxes emptied into the Yellow River was fertilizer losing (44–48%) for DIN, sewage effluents (85–88%) for DIP, and runoff (35–65%) for DSi, respectively. Strictly controlling the amount of fertilizer and improving the application methods, improving sewage treatment technology, and vigorously promoting "green travel" might reduce nutrients emptied into the Yellow River based on the main sources of nutrients. Our study may help policy makers formulate strategies and it is possible to own a better water quality in the Yellow River.</p>

Abstract:Taking advantage of the opportunity provided by the nationally funded Water Resources Integrated Planning and Investigation of China program (WRIPI), a model was established to estimate non-point source pollutant loads in a large-scale basin (ENPS-LSB) on the basis of hydrological processes and pollutant transport. The model made use of Environment for Visualizing Images software (ENVI) and Interactive Data Language (IDL) and took the characteristics of present-day China into account: a huge rural population scattered widely, marginal rural infrastructure and livestock cultivation based on scatter-feeding. The model was divided into two sections: one on dissolved and one on adsorbed pollutant loads. The dissolved loads were divided into four different types: those originating from agricultural fields, urban areas, rural residential areas, and livestock. The study was undertaken in the Yangtze River Basin. The results showed the chemical oxygen demand (COD), the total nitrogen (TN), the total phosphorous (TP), and the ammonia nitrogen (NH3–N) loads to be 2.6 × 106, 1.6 × 106, 9.3 × 105 and 3.1 × 105 tons, respectively, in the year 2000. The dissolved COD resulted mainly from rural residential areas and livestock; 76.8% of the dissolved TN and 86.4% of the dissolved TP produced were from agricultural fields. The Yangtze River Delta, the lower reaches of the Han River, and part of the Dongting Lake, Taihu Lake and Poyang Lake basins all had relatively high dissolved pollutant loads; adsorbed nitrogen and phosphorus loads were mainly observed in the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River Basin. Dissolved loads were most affected by human activity, whereas adsorbed loads were most affected by natural factors. The results showed that the model performed well on large scale, describing pollutant loads effectively. This makes it possible to properly consider not only point source pollutant discharge but also non-point source pollution in the Yangtze River Basin. Combining point source discharge investigation with the ENPS-LSB model could assist environmental management with controlling water pollution.

Abstract:The Pearl River (Zhujiang in Chinese) has been exporting excess of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), causing eutrophication in the coastal waters of southern China for decades. However, sources of these nutrients and their locations are not well studied for the Pearl River basin. As a consequence, it is difficult to formulate effective management options to reduce these nutrients in the river and to prevent further eutrophication. We developed a sub-basin model based onto the Global NEWS -2 (Nutrient Export from WaterSheds) model for the period of 1970–2050 to analyze trends in dissolved inorganic N and P (DIN and DIP) and to identify the main sources of these nutrients and their locations. We validated our model by comparing modeled nutrient fluxes with observed. Future analyses are based on Millennium Ecosystem Assessment scenario that assumes a globalized world with a reactive environmental management. DIN and DIP inputs to the coastal waters are calculated to increase by a factor of 2–2.5 between 1970 and 2050. Over two-thirds of the DIN and DIP inputs to the coastal waters stem from two down-stream basins (Zhujiang delta and Dongjiang), where agriculture and sewage are important drivers of this increase. Agriculture accounts for over 40 % of DIN inputs to coastal waters. Sewage and agriculture account for over 90 % of DIP inputs. Thus nutrient management in agriculture and sewage in down-stream areas is more effective in reducing coastal eutrophication than nutrient management in up- and middle-stream areas of the Pearl River basin.

Abstract:Although multiple pollution sources could discharge significant nutrient loads within a river basin, few studies have attempted to analyze the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of nutrient pollution source compositions across a basin. Using the Xiaohong River Basin as a case example, this study aims to establish a feasible framework for characterizing the spatiotemporal patterns of regional pollution source compositions that could be implemented in watersheds worldwide. Firstly, SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) was used to simulate nutrient loads from all main human activities in the basin. Driven by hourly rainfall, the SWAT model was able to simulate both monthly total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorous (TP) loads in the basin satisfactorily. Source attribution of TN and TP loads through SWAT scenario analysis combined with the kappa-means clustering analysis was then used to characterize the spatiotemporal distribution patterns in the nutrient pollution source compositions. A total of six types of TN pollution source compositions and five types of TP pollution source compositions have been identified across the region. In general, crop production dominated TN load contributions in 24 sub-basins along the main reach and upstream tributaries, concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) joined crop production as the leading source in eight sub-basins, and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and industry contributed significant TN loads in the remaining three sub-basins. For TP, crop production dominated load contributions in six sub-basins along the upstream tributaries, CAFOs and crop production dominated in 28 sub-basins, while WWTPs were the leading source in the remaining sub-basin. Therefore, implementing effective programs to promote the utilization of organic fertilizers from animal manure for crop production is essential to alleviate the serious nutrient pollution situation in the basin.
